Staff turnover is high in the hospital industry, influencing health care administration leaders to implement successful strategies to decrease staff turnover. The purpose of this case study was to explore successful strategies to reduce hospital employee turnover. Five health care leaders from Raleigh, North Carolina hospitals were in the sample drawn from the population of medical professionals with successful employee retention in their hospital settings. The conceptual framework for this study was the Herzberg dual-factor theory with the supporting theory, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory, and the opposing theory, Vroom’s expectancy theory. Semistructured interviews occurred with 5 leaders. The review of hospital human resource documents, website pages, and training program information combined with interview data for methodological triangulation using the Yin 5-step process, leading to 5 themes. Participants emphasized selective recruitment and hiring with a focus on hiring employees for a good organizational fit. Participants discussed different ways of engaging, supporting, and motivating hospital employees. Strategies included valuing employees, effective communication, recognition, and respect. Participants identified a fair, flexible, collaborative, and safe organizational culture as ideal for the retention of hospital employees who fit with the hospital environment. Reducing employee turnover may improve customer relations and quality of care in hospitals, leading to lower health care costs, representing positive social change for hospital employees and the patients served.

The United States health care system has evolved over the years, to be a massive system with many steps required to obtain medical care. Medication administration is an important task performed daily by nurses and is one of the key aspects of safe patient care. The multiple and varied roles of nurses, complexity of workplace, chaotic and technical nature of the work environment may result in cognitive overload that may overwhelm nurses, which may possibly lead to medication errors. All medication errors committed are considered serious events but some may consequently be harmful to patients. Research indicates that when medication errors occur the concern is usually for the patients involved in the incident. However, making a medication administration error has a lasting effect on the nurse as well as the patient (Schelbred & Nord, 2007; Treiber & Jones, 2010).

This study examined what it was like to make a medication error for eight registered nurses through in-depth and focused face to face interview using the descriptive phenomenological approach rooted in the philosophical tradition of Husserl. Two interviews were carried out with each participant and the research data were generated from a total of sixteen interviews and field notes. The transcripts were analyzed using the seven-step methodological guidelines developed by Colaizzi for data interpretation to understand the meaning of the nurses lived experiences of making medication errors.

Five theme categories emerged: Immediate Impact: Psychological and Physical Reactions; Multiple Causes within Chaos: Cognitive Dimensions; Embedded Challenges: Healthcare Setting; Organizational Culture: Within the Place/Within the Person; Dynamics of Reflection: Looking Forward . The essential structure of the phenomenon of making a medication administration error included the realization that a profound experience had happened to them. This resulted in physical and emotional upheavals, a threatened professional status, with low self-esteem and confidence. An overwhelming workload, a stressful work environment and ill-treatment by peers were descriptions of the cause of the errors. Nurses did offer ways to improve the system but felt their concerns were often not valued. Implications for nursing practice to improve patient outcomes, and for nursing education, to radically change the teaching of medication administration were formulated.

Course Details

HA 5111 Topics in Health Administration. (1-0) An in-depth study of a singular topic or a related problem being faced by practicing managers in the rapidly changing healthcare industry. Special emphasis will be placed on the topic’s current relevance and its utilitarian value to the participant. May be repeated if topic differs.

HA 5191 Field Experience Orientation. (1-0) This course will assist the student to prepare for the field experience and to prepare for the comprehensive exam. An extensive orientation to the field experience will be provided to better enable students to move from the classroom setting to a workplace scenario.

HA 5211 Topics in Health Administration. (2-0) An in-depth study of a narrow range of topics or related problems being faced by practicing managers in the rapidly changing healthcare industry. Special emphasis will be placed on the topic’s relevance and its utilitarian value to the participant. May be repeated if topic differs.

HA 5300 Healthcare Organization and Delivery. (3-0) A survey of the organization and delivery of health services focusing on the history and development of health systems as they relate to the overall health and medical care systems. Major attention is given to governing bodies, patient care organizations, and executive management structures.

HA 5301 Healthcare Administration Research Methods. (3-0) A study of research methodology as it pertains to healthcare administration. Included are hypothesis forming, designing research, and the collection, manipulation and analysis of data. Knowledge of numeracy and statistics is essential.

HA 5303 Information Systems Management in Healthcare. (3-0) This course provides a comprehensive introduction to information systems management for healthcare organizations. It covers the determination of information required by whom, design of information flows, procurement of information systems technology resources, assurance of information security, and management of systems integration.

HA 5304 Healthcare Economics and Financial Theory. (3-0) A study of economic theories that have an impact on the healthcare industry. Special emphasis will be placed on emerging economic research and its impact on potential policy ramifications.

HA 5311 Trends in Health Administration. (3-0) An in-depth study of singular trend or a related problem being faced by practicing managers in the rapidly changing healthcare industry. Special emphasis will be placed on the topic’s current relevance and its utilitarian value to the participant. Examples of trends, which are typically offered, include trends in rural health, managed care ethical issues, and in total quality management. This course may be repeated for credit with a different subject area.

HA 5316 Healthcare Financial Management. (3-0) An introduction to healthcare financial management including the financial management in healthcare organizations, healthcare payment systems, financing and investment decisions, and financial planning, analysis, and control. 

HA 5321 Healthcare Law. (3-0) An in-depth analysis of healthcare law and its effect on the relationships between the patient, the patient’s family, the provider, and other interested third parties. Analysis of cases is the primary method of study.

HA 5325 Health Care Quality Improvement Concepts and Tools. (3-0) This course teaches the concepts of quality in health care and the use of quality improvement tools. Quality management will be explored using Lean Six Sigma continuous process improvement methodologies. This course is intended to help students learn and translate health care quality management theory, concepts, and knowledge into practice.

HA 5334 Operational Decision Making for Healthcare Managers. (3-0) An introduction to the fundamentals of selected operations research techniques essential to the analysis of healthcare managerial problem situations, the design of new and improved systems, and the implementation of systems to achieve desired systems performance.

HA 5335 Public Health for Healthcare Administrators. (3-0) This course introduces the healthcare manager to public health and its role in preventing illnesses and improving the health of the community. Students will learn of the role of the manager in disease prevention and how to participate and lead community efforts for the wellness of the community.

HA 5346 Healthcare Strategic Management. (3-0) This capstone course examines mission, vision, strategy, and operations from both the formulation and implementation perspectives. Emphasis will be on the role of the manager/leader in strategic management analysis, creativity, and action. This course is available to HA majors only.

HA 5355 Human Resource Management in Healthcare Facilities.  (3-0) A study of personnel administration in the healthcare facility and the environment in which it functions. Emphasis will be on the role of the Personnel Office in forecasting, developing, and managing human resources, in addition to a review of current legislation affecting the personnel function.

HA 5356 Policy Development in Healthcare Arena. (3-0) Prospective healthcare administrators analyze changing healthcare paradigm to determine decision-points where policies can be affected. Course allows students to apply existing skills to real world policy issues at state and national levels and to analyze policy development from numerous stakeholders’ viewpoints.

HA 5362 Healthcare Organizational Behavior/Theory. (3-0) This course is a study of theory and concepts drawn from the behavioral and social sciences. These concepts are applied as a foundation and conceptual framework for the analysis, diagnosis, prediction and guidance of human behavior in healthcare organizations.

HA 5371 Marketing of Health Services. (3-0) A study of marketing functions and principles as they relate to the healthcare delivery system. Analysis of marketing concepts such as market segmentation, marketing planning, marketing audit, marketing positioning, and marketing mix will be discussed.

HA 5375. Healthcare Accounting. (3-0) An introduction to financial accounting in healthcare with an emphasis on the preparation of non-profit financial statements for healthcare service organizations, control procedures for healthcare entities, and accounting issues unique to the healthcare industry. This course does not earn graduate degree credit.

The College for Health, Community and Policy (HCAP) is a diverse college that provides real world experiences and engages directly in our community. An Open Comparative Study of the Effectiveness and Incomparable Study of the Immunogenicity and Safety of the Vaccine (CoviVac) for Adults Aged 60 Years and Older

Inclusion Criteria:

Volunteers must meet the following inclusion criteria:

Type of participants

• Healthy volunteers or volunteers with a history of stable diseases that do not meet any of the criteria for non-inclusion in the study.

Other inclusion criteria

• Written informed consent of volunteers to participate in a clinical trial
• Volunteers who are able to fulfill the Protocol requirements (i.e., fill out a self-observation Diary, come to control visits).

Exclusion Criteria:

SARS-CoV-2 infection • A case of established COVID-19 disease confirmed by PCR and/or ELISA in the last 6 months.

Diseases or medical conditions

• Serious post-vaccination reaction (temperature above 40 C, hyperemia or edema more than 8 cm in diameter) or complication (collapse or shock-like condition that developed within 48 hours after vaccination; convulsions, accompanied or not accompanied by a feverish state) to any previous vaccination.
• Burdened allergic history (anaphylactic shock, Quincke's edema, polymorphic exudative eczema, serum sickness in the anamnesis, hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to the introduction of any vaccines in the anamnesis, known allergic reactions to vaccine components, etc.).
• Guillain-Barre syndrome (acute polyradiculitis) in the anamnesis.
• The axillary temperature at the time of vaccination is more than 37.0 ° C.
• Acute infectious diseases (recovery earlier than 4 weeks before vaccination) according to anamnesis.
• Donation of blood or plasma (in the amount of 450 ml or more) less than 2 months before inclusion in the study.
• Severe and/or uncontrolled diseases of the cardiovascular, bronchopulmonary, neuroendocrine systems, gastrointestinal tract, liver, kidneys, hematopoietic, immune systems.
• Is registered at the dispensary for tuberculosis, leukemia, oncological diseases, autoimmune diseases.
• Any confirmed or suspected immunosuppressive or immunodeficiency condition in the anamnesis.
• Splenectomy in the anamnesis.
• Neutropenia (decrease in the absolute number of neutrophils less than 1000/mm3), agranulocytosis, significant blood loss, severe anemia (hemoglobin less than 80 g/l) according to anamnesis.
• Anorexia according to anamnesis.

Prior or concomitant therapy

• Vaccination with any vaccine carried out within 30 days before vaccination / the first dose of the studied vaccine or planned administration within 30 days after vaccination / the last dose of the studied vaccine.
• Prior vaccination with an experimental or registered vaccine that may affect the interpretation of the study data (any coronavirus or SARS vaccines).
• Long-term use (more than 14 days) of immunosuppressants or other immunomodulatory drugs (immunoregulatory peptides, cytokines, interferons, immune system effector proteins (immunoglobulins), interferon inducers (cycloferon) during the six months preceding the study, according to anamnesis.
• Treatment with systemic glucocorticosteroids (≥ 20 mg of prednisone, or an analog, for more than 15 days during the last month).
• Volunteers who received immunoglobulin preparations or blood transfusion during the last 3 months prior to the start of the study according to anamnesis.

Other non-inclusion criteria

• Participation in any other clinical trial within the last 3 months.

Exclusion criteria:

• Withdrawal of Informed consent by a volunteer;
• The volunteer was included in violation of the inclusion/non-inclusion criteria of the Protocol;
• Any condition of a volunteer that requires, in the reasoned opinion of a medical researcher, the withdrawal of a volunteer from the study;
• Taking unauthorized medications (see section 6.2);
• The volunteer refuses to cooperate or is undisciplined (for example, failure to attend a scheduled visit without warning the researcher and/or loss of communication with the volunteer), or dropped out of observation;
• For administrative reasons (termination of the study by the Sponsor or regulatory authorities), as well as in case of gross violations of the Protocol that may affect the results of the study.

Students and Faculty Mentors Celebrated at Student Research Day

On May 7, 2024, students and faculty mentors were celebrated at Yale School of Medicine’s (YSM) Student Research Day (SRD), an annual tradition at YSM since 1988. Five medical students (Chinye Ijile, Amanda Lieberman, Kingson Lin, Victoria Marks, and Jamieson O’Marr) made thesis presentations, and over 75 students, from across Yale’s health profession schools, displayed scientific posters and engaged with attendees during the poster session.

“Today we’re showcasing a diverse range of mentored research—spanning from fundamental basic science, to implementation science—performed by student investigators from across the health professions schools,” Associate Dean for Student Research Sarwat Chaudhry, MD, professor of medicine (general medicine), said in opening remarks. Associate Dean for Student Research Erica Herzog, MD, PhD, John Slade Ely Professor of Medicine (pulmonary) and professor of pathology, added, “We take immense pride in Yale’s deep-rooted tradition of embedding research within medical education. For our students, experience in scientific investigation isn't merely a stepping stone towards a successful residency match or a career in academic research; it's foundational training for their lifelong commitment to medicine.”

Farr Lecture

The Lee E. Farr MD Endowed Lectureship and the presentation of the Dr. John N. Forrest, Jr., Mentorship Award, which bookended the student thesis presentations, honored YSM faculty for their outstanding mentorship. In introducing Peter Aronson, MD, C.N.H. Long Professor of Medicine (Nephrology) and professor of cellular and molecular physiology, as the Farr lecturer, Nancy J. Brown, MD, Jean and David W. Wallace Dean and C.N.H. Long Professor of Internal Medicine, explained that the lecture aims to stimulate thinking and to inspire students to strive to achieve more effective leadership and educational roles in society. Brown said that Aronson, who has been at YSM for 50 years since joining as a nephrology fellow in 1974, “epitomizes these qualities as a physician-scientist, educator, mentor, and colleague. As such, there is no one more fitting to speak at today’s event.”

As chief of the Section of Nephrology from 1987-2002, Brown said, Aronson nurtured the development of numerous physician-scientists, both as faculty and fellows, many of whom became recognized leaders—and many of whom remain at Yale and were present on SRD. “It goes without saying” Brown concluded, “that Dr. Aronson’s stewardship is one reason for the enduring strength of Yale’s 200-year tradition of medical student research,” noting he had been part of the tradition for one quarter of the 200 years. (In comments after Aronson spoke, Herzog noted several of his student evaluations simply said GOAT: “Greatest Of All Time.”)

Using his own experiences as examples in his lecture titled From Sugar to Salt to Stones: Serendipitous Journey as Mentee and Mentor, Aronson noted the importance of chance events and serendipitous research findings in determining the course of his academic development and research career. ( This article describes his remarks in detail .) In closing, Aronson honored the late John N. Forrest, Jr., professor emeritus of medicine and the founding director of YSM’s Office of Student Research (OSR). Forrest, he said, “exemplified extraordinary commitment to the process of education and mentorship,” adding “we should all be inspired by his example of what is most gratifying in academic medicine.”

Chaudhry similarly honored John N. Forrest, Jr. in introducing the mentorship award established to recognize his legacy. “As many of you know, Dr. Forrest died earlier this year, and so this year’s Forrest Prize holds special meaning.” OSR “was his pride and joy,” Chaudhry said, adding that since starting their roles as associate deans of student research in 2020, “Dr. Herzog and I have continually been impressed by Dr. Forrest’s care and foresight in establishing the Office of Student Research. Dr. Forrest’s legacy lives on in the enduring strength of YSM’s medical student research program.”

Before Forrest’s son, John K. Forrest, MD, associate professor of medicine (cardiovascular medicine), announced the award recipient— Shelli Farhadian, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine (infectious diseases); assistant professor, epidemiology of microbial diseases —he shared, “My family and I are grateful to the numerous people who reached out after our father’s passing. Some of the most touching correspondence we received were from medical students, residents, and fellows whom he had mentored while at Yale. There is no greater evidence of the lasting impact that mentorship plays in the lives of young physicians that the words contained in those letters.”

Turning to the awardee, Forrest said, “Dr. Farhadian is an exemplary mentor,” and pointed to her role “in shaping the careers of her mentees, many of whom have garnered multiple awards and recognition, and published first author manuscripts under her tutelage.”

He then shared what a student wrote about Farhadian: “Dr. Farhadian is such a fantastic mentor and person. As my mentor she encouraged me to apply for grants and submit to conferences and journals and has always made herself available to answer any questions that I have. She also facilitates an environment in which her mentees feel comfortable coming to her with questions and offers help in connecting me with doctors in my fields of interest. Beyond my research with Dr. Farhadian, she has also proved to be an invaluable resource in terms of developing as a student and a future doctor. She is an inspiring woman in medicine, and I hope to become as caring and capable as a doctor and mentor as she models.”

Upon receiving the award, Farhadian said, “It means a great deal for me to receive this award in Dr. Forrest’s name. I was lucky to cross paths with Dr. Forrest when I was an intern, and I will always remember how kind he was to everyone in the hospital, no matter how small their role.” Farhadian added, “I feel very lucky to have had my own exceptional research mentors along the way, and I have tried to emulate them when mentoring my own trainees.”

Will We Ever See a Health Care Bill?

It’s a guessing game even for a seasoned policy analyst.

Back in September 2023, I looked into my crystal ball and told you that I could see Congress passing legislation by the end of 2023 that would require PBMs to disclose to the plan administrator detailed information about pricing practices, fees charged, rebate amounts and discounts retained by the PBM or passed through the employer, and whether the PBM steers participants and beneficiaries to pharmacies owned by the PBM.  Ummmm, that did not happen.

Back in November 2023, you also heard me suggest that legislation to codify the Hospital Transparency and Transparency in Coverage (TiC) Rules, along with codifying the requirement to publicly disclose Prescription Drug Prices on a Machine-Readable File, and also increasing the disclosure of PBM payment practices and requiring owners of provider networks to grant plan sponsors access to a complete and accurate set of claims data for “auditing” purposes would not happen by the end of 2023. Ummmm, in a surprise move, the House of Representatives actually passed a bill that would effectuate the above stated changes on December 11 (the Lower Costs, More Transparency Act ).

I’m 0 for 2, although the Senate has yet to act on the House-passed Lower Costs, More Transparency Act, so I suppose I am more like 0 for 1-½.

What’s my crystal ball telling me now: Lame Duck, Lame Duck, Lame Duck.

What’s “Lame Duck,” you ask?

Lame Duck is the session of Congress that occurs after the election in a particular election year. This year, the election will be held on November 5. And, this year is an especially important election year because it is a Presidential election year.  

There is no chance that I am going to suggest who I think will win the Presidential election.  

But, it does look like the House of Representatives will go from a Republican majority to a Democrat majority. And, it also looks like the Senate will go from a Democrat majority to a Republican majority.  

That will actually have an impact on this year’s Lame Duck session. And, this will certainly have an impact on whether the Transparency, Data-Sharing, and PBM Reforms that I have been talking about for so long ultimately make their way into the law.  

Typically, whether any “new policy” (i.e., changes that are not already in the law) will get enacted during Lame Duck will be impacted by the results of the elections. For example, if there is a shift in the majorities in either the House or Senate (or both), often the current political party in the majority will seek to enact “new policy” changes while they still can. However, the political party that may be coming into power will undertake efforts to block these “new policy” changes so they can make their own changes in the forthcoming years on their own terms. BUT, if there is bi-partisan support for measures that are already in law (and not considered “new policy”), then Congress and the sitting President will typically work together during the Lame Duck session.

So what does all that mean for this upcoming Lame Duck session?  

There are current health care-related items that are already in the law and not considered “new policy.” One example is the COVID-era Telehealth flexibilities , and in particular, the expiring provision of the law which allows a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) to pay first-dollar for Telehealth services without disqualifying the HDHP-plan holder from contributing to their HSA for the year. There is bi-partisan support for extending this exception, soooooo, based on the above stated thesis, it is highly likely that – irrespective of the results of the upcoming elections – this current Congress and President Biden will work together to extend this provision, as well as enact other health care-related matters like it.

So why is that important?

If some health care-related items that are already in the law and not considered “new policy” are likely going to move during this upcoming Lame Duck, maybe, just maybe some “new policy” will ride along with them.    

And why is that important?

Well, in my opinion, the provisions included in the House-passed Lower Costs, More Transparency Act like codifying the Hospital Transparency, TiC, and Prescription Drug File Rules and the Data-Sharing provisions, plus any of the PBM reforms (either those included in the House-passed bill or the Senate’s version of PBM reforms embodied in the Pharmacy Benefit Manager Reform Act) are all considered “new policy.” And, while “new policy” doesn’t always get passed in Lame Duck (as noted above), I am wagering that this “new policy” will ride along with the other health care-related items that are already in the law.

And viola…there you have it.  

My crystal ball is telling me that we should expect codifying the Hospital Transparency, TiC, and Prescription Drug File Rules, plus some form of Data-Sharing (like requiring access to a complete and accurate set of claims data for “audit” purposes), plus some form of PBM reforms (probably the Senate’s version) to finally get across the finish line in Congress and get signed into law by President Biden by the end of 2024.

Let’s hope I avoid going a full 0 for 3.

What is your main extracurricular activity and why is it important to you? 

My main extracurricular activity is my work in a psychology and law research laboratory, Stephen Ceci's Cornell Child Witness and Cognition Lab, where I lead the "The Killing the Oblivious" team. My team researches the intersections of mental health and the capital punishment system, analyzing the demographic and legal factors that affect a capital defendant's likelihood of being deemed competent or incompetent to be executed. My lab is important to me because it symbolizes my growth during my time at Cornell. I joined Dr. Ceci's lab in the middle of my freshman year. All of the rules of research were new to me, and I focused on doing my work accurately and efficiently. Now, as a team leader, I manage and mentor a group of students, and I am excited to introduce ideas that can push our work in new directions. Our research, which deals with a particularly marginalized community and offers proposals for how the legal system should evolve to treat this community better, also regularly reminds me of the importance of research that gives back and advocates for the populations it studies, which is one of the most important lessons I will take away with me from my time conducting research at Cornell.

What Cornell memory do you treasure the most?         

The Cornell memory that I treasure the most is the first meeting of the book club that I put together with a close friend of mine, Mckenzie Carrier. We gathered a group of 10 or so friends together in Mckenzie's living room, each with a copy of Sara Ahmed's "Killing Joy" and James Baldwin's "Sonny's Blues" in hand, and discussed fiction and theory together for two or three hours. To me, it felt like we had created a welcoming space where i could confess to having utterly no idea what was going on in a given section of a text, something I felt awkward about admitting in class (though I have gotten much better at this over time). I was also grateful to hear the ideas and thought-provoking questions of my friends, some of whom I had never been able to take a class with. 

What have you accomplished as a Cornell student that you are most proud of?

The accomplishment I'm most proud of as a Cornell student is my self-designed major and senior honors thesis as a College Scholar. My thesis, and the major that led me to it, has changed many times over my three years in the College Scholar program. Initially, I was interested in the significance of names and labels, which then shifted into an interest in debates about so-called "Critical Race Theory" and public school history curricula, which finally led me to my work today on 21st century Black American historical fiction and its challenges to American ideologies about national progress. In the process of preparing for my thesis, I took classes in philosophy, anthropology, linguistics, government, comparative literature and Spanish, studying with faculty members across the college and learning how to form arguments and write in the specific ways that each of these disciplines required. Last spring, I presented a portion of my thesis research at the Richard Macksey National Undergraduate Humanities Research Symposium at Johns Hopkins, where I was thrilled to engage in conversations with undergraduates from schools across the United States who were also interested in the theoretical questions and arguments that literature can raise. At Cornell, I am grateful to have located similar communities in the College Scholar Program and the Humanities Scholar Program.

How have your beliefs or perspectives changed since you first arrived at Cornell? 

When I arrived at Cornell, I was intimidated easily by people who studied in fields I did not know well and by those who knew much more than me about the fields that I loved deeply. I would halt myself before asking questions that I thought were silly, and I often hesitated before sharing my opinion in class or at a lecture, even if the topic of discussion was a text I had analyzed closely. Now, I still stop to think before I speak, and I still evaluate my questions before I raise them — I do not think these are necessarily bad behaviors — but I think much, much less about how I might be perceived for asking a "stupid" question or for misunderstanding a text's argument. I have embraced that I am here to learn, from both my professors and from the students around me. I also trust that if I have put in honest work and care about the subject, my basic questions are worth asking, and my misunderstandings are better off corrected than left sitting silently in the back of my mind. I've discovered, happily, that I am now much more concerned with gaining a deeper understanding of an issue or kickstarting an interesting discussion than I am with "being wrong."

If you were to offer advice to an incoming first-year student, what would you say?

There is no "correct" way to navigate your time at Cornell — but you should certainly spend your limited time here on the things that matter to you. If I could go back to freshman year, I would have worried less about being in the "right" places (as a pre-law student, as someone interested in public policy, as a nervous freshman), and I would have jumped more quickly into the organizations that are doing the things I am passionate about.

Technology companies like Well Health Technologies ( TSX:WELL ) are changing the world for the better. As a result, demand is high and expectations are high. Well Health Technologies reported its first-quarter earnings, which were a reflection of this — Well Health Technologies’s stock price is therefore up 7% since.

Here’s what you need to know.

Well Health’s momentum remains strong

The first quarter was the 21st consecutive quarter of record-breaking results. Revenue increased 36.7% to $231 million, with organic growth of 13.5%, as patient visits soared 34% versus last year. This was accompanied by a 6.1% increase in adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) to $28.3 million. Finally, adjusted earnings per share (EPS) came in at $0.08 cents versus $0.06 cents last year and versus consensus expectations that were calling for EPS of negative $0.04.

Beyond this obvious strong momentum, the company signalled that it is now ready and able to focus more on shareholder returns. It’s what every investor wants to hear, and it comes right on time. This means making good use of its growing free cash flow. In the quarter, free cash flow increased 11%, and for the year, management expects free cash flow to increase 30% to $50 million.

Also, management has made a commitment to reduce share-based compensation as well as increase share buybacks, effectively reducing or eliminating dilution in Well Health stock.

The primary care market in Canada is a big opportunity for Well Health

In terms of future growth and opportunities, the primary care market in Canada is a big one for Well Health. This is because the market is a very large one, which is very fragmented, with Well Health having a mere 1% market share — and Well Health is facing little competition as of now.

In the first quarter, revenue from the primary care business increased 83% to $45.3 million. In 2024, management expects revenue of more than $300 million, which they expect to exceed $1 billion in the not-too-distant future. This assumes that Well Health has a 10% market share at that point.

So, as you can see, the opportunity is significant — and Well Health is getting there rapidly.

Artificial intelligence to power healthcare

Another really interesting aspect of Well Health’s story is the opportunity to use artificial intelligence (AI) to improve healthcare — from efficiencies to disease detection and management to patient care. Examples of this include AI Voice, for transcribing, effectively eliminating human error in the transcribing process as well as cost. There is also AI Inbox Administration, which is an automation software that automatically files faxes to charts.

These AI-enabled processes sound simple, but daily use of these will have the effect of reducing costs, increasing efficiencies, and lessening the workload so healthcare professionals can focus more on patient care.

But the most exciting potential of AI, is its ability to directly improve patient outcomes. For example, AI Decision Support acts as a co-pilot for the physician. It provides risk stratification, harnessing clinical data and AI to screen for and find patients at-risk for over 100 different chronic and rare diseases. This has the potential to improve patient outcomes by leaps and bounds.

The bottom line

As you can see from this article, I feel very optimistic about Well Health Technologies from many different angles. From the value of its business to the company’s improving financials, I think that Well Health is really in a sweet spot right now.

This will drive Well Health Technologies’s stock price significantly higher over the next few years, in my view.

Harry Hosier Spirit Award For this academic year, the Divinity School announces a new award that honors the life and legacy of the Reverend Harry Hosier, one of American Methodism’s greatest preachers. The editors of By Faith magazine have invited Dean Pierce to select a degree candidate for the Harry Hosier Spirit Award, and in the judgment of the dean, the award is presented to: Thomas Arkansas, Jr.
