Here are 15 hacks to enhance your Google Slides !

1. Reformat the size of the slide

Click file> page setup> custom, then typing in the dimensions you want. If you’d like the slide to reflect the size of computer paper, type in the dimensions 8.5 x 11 inches then click “Apply.”

2. Search images from google to insert into a slide

Click insert> image> search the web. Once you have found the image you want to insert, click on it, then click “insert” on the bottom right hand side of your screen.

3. You can also insert images using the URL by copying the URL of a chosen image

In this article, we will go over 15 tips on how to make an amazing design using Google Slides. Whether it’s your first time creating a presentation on Google Slides or if you’re an experienced professional, these tips are sure to help guide you in the right direction!

1. Create a Compeling Narrative Through a Story Arc

A presentation is only as good as the narrative it holds!

If your presentation doesn’t leave “ food for thought ” for your audience, they are less likely to remember your presentation, and even less likely to take any action afterward (which is mostly bad news especially if you are trying to convince your investors to give you more money!)

Presentation design goes hand-in-hand with the content that is going to be used for the presentation. Thus, start with a compelling story.

The best way to create a convincing story for your presentation is to use the “ Story Arc “.

A “ Story Arc ” or a “Narrative Arc” is something that has been successfully used by storytellers and writers for ages. The keyword here is “successfully”!

A powerful narrative can not only help your audience understand the intricacies of the subject of the presentation, but it also makes the presentation engaging and entertaining.

The best way to start working on a story arc is to either look at what is the most important aspect of your presentation and how can it be emphasized in a manner that takes the role of a protagonist?

Another way that I’ve used the story arc in my presentations successfully is to work backward. Think of what is the end outcome that you expect, and try to track things backward in order to achieve the end outcome.

No matter what approach you take, if you are able to fit a story arc in your presentation, you’d be golden!

Finally use stories from your life, or what you experienced while working on a project! I’ve seen this works really well and resonates with the audience. Here’s a quick video on tips for using storytelling in your presentation.

2. One Topic Per Slide

Now that you’ve identified the larger part of what you going to cover in your presentation – in other words, the content, you now need to lay it out on your presentation such that it can be consumed by your audience comfortably!

One of the simplest tips to design a better presentation is to make sure that you don’t cramp all the information in a single slide or 4-5 slides! Make sure that you spread out the presentation on multiple slides so that the audience can absorb all the information, but in short bursts, and then move on to the next topic!

A good rule of thumb for a good design is to try and cover just 1 topic on a slide.

I’ve seen this work plenty of times, and I personally also use this technique for my presentations. Simply divide the content of your presentations first into multiple key sections. Then, divide the sections further into key topics that should be covered within that section.

You can do this activity on a sheet of paper or just on the first slide of the presentation. Once you’re done with this activity, you’ll realize that the outline that you’ve just created also serves as the “Agenda” or the “Table of Contents” slide.

Now, all you’re left to do is fill in the information that needs to go under each topic.

You may be wondering how is this a design tip. Well, when you have just one concept present on a slide, it is not only easier for your audience to consume, but also easier to design. You’ll realize this when designing the presentation and thank me later!

Remember, there will be times when you will not have much to say about a particular topic, your slide will look empty, and you will be tempted to add another topic on the same slide. Don’t fall for that. Instead, use images that accentuate the text or the topic of the slide.

3. Start with a Template (Don’t Design from Scratch!)

This next tip might seem a bit obvious to some.

But, the reality is that quite a lot of people tend to miss out on the fact that you can use presentations that already look good, and just customize the slides for your content!

Google Slides already provides you with a number of free templates. Here’s how you can access them –

First, visit your Google Slides dashboard page.
Login to your Google Account (if prompted)
Choose a template from “Start a new presentation” section
You can also click on “Template Gallery” to view more templates.

The one template that I end up using over and over again is the file name “ Consulting Proposal “. It has got a sleek modern design, a good mix of image slides as well as different text placeholder slide layouts for you to easily edit your presentation.

But, feel free to check out other templates and see which one fits your need the best.

The point here is that if you are not great at designing a presentation, you’d perhaps be better off using a template rather than starting from scratch!

4. Use Fonts the Right Way

When it comes to designing a good presentation on Google Slides (or any application for that matter), fonts do play a key role in how your presentation looks!

Thus, it is important to make sure that you use the fonts correctly when creating your presentation.

Here’s what you need to remember when using fonts for your presentation –

Use Just One or Two Fonts – Don’t use too many fonts in your presentation. Your presentation design will not look good. Plus, using too many fonts in a presentation shows lack of consistency and professionalism in design.
Combine Fonts – Ideally, just use one font if you are unsure of which fonts work great together. But, you can also combine fonts to make the content of your presentation standout!

If you do want to go with a two-font option, use the Google Fonts tool to identify the font combination.

Here’s how you can find a good font combination for your presentation –

Step 1 – Visit Googe Fonts and Search for a Font

Google Fonts site provides free fonts that are compatible with most modern internet sites and web browsers. Google Fonts are considered the gold standard for sites as these look very modern and are light.

The best thing is – most of them are already available in your Google Slides presentation by default.

So, the first step is to visit the Google Fonts website . Then, search for a font, to begin with. My favorite font is Montserrat . But, you can also go with Lato, Roboto, or Source Sans Pro if you are looking for a Sans Serif Font .

If you are looking for a Serif font , I would recommend using Merriweather .

Step 2 – Choose the Font and click “Pairings”

The next step is to choose a font. You can either type one of the fonts that I mentioned in the search bar and click on it once it appears OR you can also simply choose from the list provided below.

Just make sure that you click on the font that you like to open it.

Once the font is open, click on the “Pairings” tab on the top (as shown in the image).

Step 3 – Choose a Font Pair

Now simply choose one of the font pairs provided by Google Fonts. You can also click on a font pair to see how it looks on the section on the right.

Play with the options provided and choose the font combination that you like.

Now, simply go back to your Google Slides presentation and change the fonts according to your selection.

5. Choose the Right Color Combination

Just the way fonts are an important part of your Google Slides presentation design, choosing a good color combination can make your presentation look visually appealing, consistent, and professional.

Unfortunately, a lot of struggle with choosing a good color combination. Thus, I highly advise going with a monochromatic color scheme.

A monochromatic color scheme in a presentation provides a variety of color combinations of the same color. This makes your presentation look consistent and professional.

Moreover, using a monochromatic color scheme is a perfect way option for a beginner as it requires the least amount of time and effort to set up!

Then, also check out how to use the eyedropper tool in Google Slides to implement the color scheme that you end up choosing.

Make sure that you change the color at the theme level in Google Slides instead of changing it on every single slide. This will save you quite a bit of time!

6. Use the Expore Tool to Generate Slide Designs

Once you’ve decided the fonts, color scheme, and theme, and you have the content structured out, you’ve done most of the hard work!

All you are now left to do is create the slide designs. And, to help you with that, make sure that you use the “ Explore Tool ” in Google Slides.

The “Explore” feature in Google Slides generates slide designs based on the content that is already present on the slide. It is a great way to get a slide designed almost instantaneously!

The “Explore” feature in Google Slides works much as the design ideas feature in PowerPoint.

Based on the content on the slide, it will throw a few suggestions on how the content can be laid out on the slide. You can choose the design you like. If not, you can still design your own slide. But, it is definitely worth trying out first. Pretty cool, isn’t it!

That said, one thing to keep in mind is that this feature is still an experimental tool . And, while it is getting better with time, I wouldn’t recommend using it with every single slide.

In my experience, I’ve noticed that using the “Explore” feature in Google Slides works best when you want to create a title slide, a section break slide, or just want to get a few ideas on how the slide can be designed.

7. Apply the 3 by 3 Design Rule

The 3 by 3 design rule, otherwise also known as “ the rule of thirds “, is a principle that has been borrowed from photography. But, it is every bit applicable even for slide designs and other design elements!

As per the 3 by 3 design principle, you basically need to divide the visual canvas into 3 equal-sized vertical and horizontal grids with the help of 2 vertical grid lines and 2 horizontal grid lines.

Using these grids helps place the content correctly in the grids such that the key message usually aligns with the way our eyes like to see them visually!

The 3 by 3 design principle may seem confusing at first, but once you’ve understood how to use it, you can literally take your presentation design skills a few notches above the rest!

Using 3X3 Grids to Properly Layout Content on your Slides

The interesting thing is, you can take the same principle to make it work with elements apart from the images that are present on your slide. And, the results are just amazing!

The picture above shows how most people design their slides (on the left). However, you can literally transform the way your slides look by applying the concept of 3×3 grids to any existing content on the slides! (as shown on the right part of the picture above)

Here’s another video that explains how this concept of 3 by 3 grids can be used to take any existing slides and make them better (if they aren’t properly organized).

8. Use Powerful Images

They say – “An image speaks a thousand words!”. This absolutely holds true when it comes to big impact presentation!

If you recollect any one of the top presentations from Steve Jobs. His presentation was almost always using powerful images with very few words on them.

Using images, as opposed to a lot of text, on your presentation has a few advantages of its own –

Visual Appeal – Using images makes the slide visually appealing. Think about it – if there aren’t too many objects placed on the slide, the chances of making design related mistakes are also far lower!
Emotional Connect – Using images creates a subtle emotional connect in the minds of the audience with the topic of the presentation and/or the presenter.
Audience Focus – When you use text on a presentation, often the audience just reads the text and doens’t want to listen to the presenter. Instead, when using the images, you control the focus of the attention of your audience. Once you have their attention, making a presentation impactful is a lot easier!
Faster Design Process – In most cases, it is faster to find an image and add it to the presentation rather than think of a way to design a slide to communicate a concept. This is especially true if you have only basic design skills.

If you watch some of the most famous TED or TEDx presentations ( know the difference between TED and TEDx presentations here ), it is quite common to see presenters using high-impact images with text. Ever wonder why is it so?

Well, one of the most important reasons is that you are able to control the attention of the audience!

Now, if you are wondering how to find images for your presentation, keep reading as I’ve got some great recommendations for add-ons later in the article!

9. Keep the Text on the Slide Readable

If using images for most slides is not the way for you, then this section is going to be quite important!

In fact, even if you do plan to use just images on your slides, there may still be a few slides where you will need to have some text. If so, make sure that the text on the slide is readable!

Make sure that you don’t use text that is too small to read.

As a general rule – the further the audience is going to be away from the screen, the larger the size of the text!

Here’s what to remember for the size of the text on the slides –

Presentation seen on a computer screen – If the presentation that you are designing is going to be seen on a computer screen (either over an email or a zoom call), then make sure that the font size used for the presentation is not less than 16 points .
Presentation seen on a large screen – If the presentation is going to be delivered in an auditorium, then it is recommended to use a font size no less than 30 points . For the rest of the situations, anything in between should be fine!

Also, make sure that you don’t use too much text on the same slide. Remember – you only need to cover one key topic on one slide.

It is totally okay to just use one word in the middle of the slide, and talk about that topic rather than using text from a complete word document on a slide!

If your audience will have to squint to read what is written, it just creates a bad user experience and they quickly lose interest.

Also, for the above reason, don’t include everything on the slide that you plan to say! If you do so, you may come across as a person who is just reading from the slide! Most importantly, the audience is going to end up reading the text from the slide faster than you speak, and end up losing interest in the presentation!

10. Ditch the Bullet Points (Use Infographics Instead!)

Using bullet points on a presentation is so 1990s! It’s just not the way good presentations are given anymore!

If you want your presentation design to look good, make sure that you get rid of bullet points. Instead, you can either use images, icons, or even infographics!

I’ve written an entire article on how to use infographics in Google Slides where I also talk about SmartArt and charts in Google Slides. Make sure you check out that article!

There are a ton of different ways in which you get infographics for Google Slides. I’ve talked about that also in the same article that I’ve linked above.

Likewise, you can also use icons instead of bullet points. Although adding icons to Google Slides is not an option that is available by default, there are a few ways you can work around this problem. For instance, you can use an add-on like “Flaticon” that provides free icons for Google Slides!

If you are wondering how to create a slide with bullet points and use icons or other methods, here’s a good example of an actual client slide that I redesigned –

As you can see on the image, simply using icons and structuring the text to give proper hierarchy to the information can make all the difference to the design of the slide!

In case you don’t want to use icons, you can also use numbers with circles, and use a similar design instead of just adding bullets to your presentation. If you do so, your presentation will still look good!

11. Avoid Using Just Table or a Graph

The next tip to remember is to avoid using just a table or a graph on a slide. Make sure that you also include a few points that act as key takeaways from the information that you provide.

Using just a table will present a lot of information on a single slide. This will definitely cause an information overload. And, even though your audience may be able to assess what is being presented to them, it is important to either highlight key pieces of information in the table or a graph.

Alternatively, you can also add a couple of lines of text indicating the key learnings from the data set.

Don’t get me wrong, it is important to have data sets on a presentation if you have one! But, just make sure that you also highlight key pieces of information that your audience should pay attention to.

12. Keep Animations and Transitions Subtle

Another design tip that you should keep in mind is the use of animations and transitions in Google Slides.

You want to make sure when using animations in Google Slides , you don’t add any funny movements. Think old school when using animations and transitions in your presentation.

Any additional movement or sudden transitions can distract the attention of the audience from the core topic and the messaging of the presentation.

So, make sure that you keep the use of such animations or transitions to the minimal!

13. Use Professional Google Slides Templates

If you find that the free template doesn’t have enough slide layouts for your presentation or doesn’t really fit the topic of your presentation, you may want to consider using professional templates!

There are a ton of different ways you can get templates for Google Slides. Unfortunately, most of the free options (and even most paid options) have outdated designs!

My personal favorite method for getting amazing Google Slides presentation templates is using Envato Elements .

The best part about using Envato Elements is that not only does it provide you with the best-in-class designs for your templates, but it also provides you with an option to download an unlimited number of presentations! (yes, you hear that right!)

Moreover, the pricing of Envato Elements is also really affordable! All you need to do is click on Envato Elements to visit the website, view the templates, and click on the “ Get Unlimited Downloads ” button on the top.

You will be prompted to sign up and pay a subscription. Just go for a monthly subscription and pay for one month (You can easily remove the payment method and cancel your subscription anytime).

Once you’ve logged in, simply cancel your subscription. Your subscription will be valid until the next date of renewal even if you cancel it.

Now, for the one month that you’ve paid, feel free to download all the templates that you like including templates for Google Slides, and PowerPoint!

14. Use Add-ons for Faster and Better Designs

One of the challenges with Google Slides, as opposed to some of the most reliable presentation design software, is the limited number of features it offers.

I suppose we should not really be complaining about it given that we do get a great presentation design application for free along with several additional advantages with Google Slides ! That said, you do feel the need for a few pro-features that PowerPoint has to offer.

However, one way to fix this problem is to use add-ons with Google Slides!

Using add-ons allows you to use third-party tools and bring additional functionalities to your Google Slides presentation!

Add-ons on Google Slides are easy to add. Simply go to the Google Marketplace, and search for the add-on that you would like to add. Install it, and you are done!

15. Hire a Professional

Well, the last tip is not so much as a tool that you can use on Google Slides. But, it is a great hack to ensure that you create great presentation designs!

Simply hire a professional to do the design work for you! You may be wondering that hiring a presentation professional might be difficult. However, that is not the case.

You can easily find some really good presentation designers on Fiverr , and you can start at as little as $5 to $10 dollars per slide! I’ve personally used freelancers from the site, and although finding a good freelancer may take you 15-20 minutes, you can easily outsource your work and let the designer worry about the rest!

The best part is – you don’t have to pay a single penny to hire a professional. You only pay to get the work done!

There are a ton of other platforms to hire professionals that can design a good presentation for you. However, I have found Fiverr (especially for presentation design work) and Upwork to be the most effective.

A Few Things to Remember When Delivering the Presentation

Once you have created an amazing Google Slides presentation, you are perhaps ready to deliver the presentation. However, I’d like to also share a couple of tips that can be helpful when you plan to give the presentation!

So, here they are –

1. Use a Presentation Remote

It doesn’t matter whether you are giving a presentation in an auditorium or online through Zoom or Microsoft Teams.

Using a presentation remote helps you keep your hands free and allows for free movement and hand gestures. This does help engage with your audience.

2. Use the Q&A Tool in Google Slides

A unique feature that Google Slides provides is the Q&A tool. This is great especially if you are delivering a webinar-style presentation or if you are simply addressing a large gathering.

This tool allows your audience to send questions during the course of your presentation. Then, at the end, you can simply view the questions in the Q&A session and answer them one by one!

It is a great way to deliver an engaging presentation using Google Slides!

1. Create Cohesiveness with the Perfect Theme

Google Slides offers a plethora of themes that you can use to give your presentation a harmonious and unified look. With these pre-designed themes , you’re not required to expend effort or devote time to format your slides manually. You simply need to consider your audience, topic, and core message when choosing the right theme. However, if you want to create your own customized theme, Google Slides provides options for that too.

You can choose a pre-designed theme by clicking on the ‘Theme’ option in the menu bar.

Upon clicking ‘Theme ,’ you will see this option with a scroll bar. Select the theme that best fits your presentation’s content and objective, and click on it. The changes will be reflected in real-time. You can also experiment with different theme options until you find the most relevant one.

Click on the ‘ Import theme ‘ button if you want to import pre-designed Google Slides themes saved in your drive or shared folder.

2. Use High-Quality Images to Engage Your Audience

Images can communicate your message more clearly than text. However, be sure to use relevant and high-definition images, as the wrong ones might ruin your entire presentation.

With Google Slides, you have various ways to insert images. You can upload them from your computer or Google Drive.

You can also search for images directly through Google Images . To do this, click on Insert > Image > Search the Web. A panel will open on the right side of your screen. Just type the keyword for the image you want, then click on it to add it to your slide. This way, you won’t need to download and reupload images to your slide.

3. Explore the Option to Reshape Images

Tired of the same old square or rectangular images? Get creative with Google Slides by reshaping your images into various callouts, arrows, shapes, or equations.

First, select the image you want to change. Then, click the ‘ Mask image ‘ option, which you’ll find as a small triangle button on the right side of the Crop icon (as shown in the accompanying screenshot).

You’ll be presented with many reshaping options like Shapes , Arrows , Callouts, and Equations .

For instance, if you choose the Oval shape, you can transform the image into a beautiful new form.

Feel free to explore and experiment with different shapes until you find the one you like. Google Slides lets you undo your changes, so don’t hesitate to try different things.

4. Add Links to Make Your Presentation More Informative

You don’t want to overwhelm your audience by cramming too much text into your slides. So how can you make your presentation richer and more insightful?

Google Slides offers a solution: you can add links to images, websites, other slides in the presentation, or even to files on Google Slides.

To add a link, simply select the text you want to link, then right-click on it or press Ctrl + K (Mac: Cmd + K ) on your keyboard. Next, click on the ‘Link’ option.

Now, type the text you want to display, add the relevant link, and click on ‘Apply .’

5. Easily Make Changes to All Slides Using the Slide Master

Imagine you have a 15-slide presentation and want to make the same adjustments to every slide. Editing each one separately would be time-consuming, wouldn’t it?

Google Slides offers a quicker solution through the ‘ Theme Builder ‘ option found in the View menu and the ‘ Edit Theme ‘ option in the Slide menu.

You can access these options by clicking on either one of them.

Then, simply click on the elements you want to change. Whether you need to modify the font style of titles and subtitles, add your company’s logo to the header or footer, or make other adjustments, these changes will automatically apply to all the slides.

6. Easily Add Diagrams

Diagrams make it simpler for presenters to link different pieces of information and data. This helps the audience understand concepts without difficulty. Plus, diagrams are widely recognized and used in presentations.

To insert a diagram, follow these steps:

Go to ‘ Insert ‘ and then select ‘ Diagram ‘.
Depending on your content, choose a diagram type such as Grid , Hierarchy , Timeline , Process , Relationship , Cycle , or others.

Here, we are inserting a Hierarchy diagram.

You’ll find many design options to choose from. You can select the number of levels and colors that suit your needs, and you can also modify the text.

7. Add Movement with Animations and Transitions

Make your presentation more engaging and lively by incorporating animations and transition effects. Use these effects to enhance the visualization of processes, concepts, or stories. Be mindful to use them thoughtfully and not too much, as overuse can distract your audience.

Apply transition effects as you move from one slide to another. Animation effects can be applied to individual elements on a slide, such as images, shapes, or text.

To add an animation, go to the ‘ Insert ‘ tab and click on ‘ Animation ‘.

A panel will then open:

Applying Transition

To add a slide transition, click the arrow under the ‘ Slide Transition ‘ option. Initially, there will be no transition selected (marked as ‘ None ‘).
By clicking the drop-down arrow, you can select the effect you want. You can also set the speed of the transition to slow, medium, or fast. After choosing your settings, click ‘ Apply to all slides ‘.

Applying Animation

Choose an object on the slide, such as a video, text, or image, that you want to animate. Then select from the available animation options.

For example, you might want to apply animation to a video.

In Google Slides, you have two ways to animate videos: either play it when you click ‘ Play on click ‘ or have it play automatically. Select the option that fits your needs and click on ‘ Play ‘.

In this case, we’ve chosen the ‘ Play on click ‘ option.

8. Add YouTube Videos to Enhance Your Content

People often prefer visual content, so adding videos can make your content more appealing and engaging. Videos breathe life into your presentation, making it more convincing.

With Google Slides, you can easily include videos from Google Drive or YouTube. Simply click on Insert > Video , and a screen will appear.

From this screen, you can either insert videos saved on your Google Drive or paste a YouTube video URL. You even have the option to search for YouTube videos by entering relevant keywords.

Choose the video you’d like to include and click on ‘ Insert ‘.

Once the video is embedded in the slide, the Format options should automatically appear. If they don’t, just click on Format > Format options.

In this section, you have the ability to customize the video’s start and end time, size, position, and more. Options to mute the audio and alter drop shadow settings are also available.

9. Use Speaker Notes to Write Key Discussion Points

When giving a presentation, it’s often better to avoid paper notes or cue cards for reminding yourself of the important points you want to share with your audience. Instead, Google Slides offers a feature called Speaker Notes . These notes are hidden from the audience but can be seen by the presenter.

Speaker Notes can be found at the bottom of each slide. If you don’t see them, you can make them appear by going to View and clicking on ‘ Show speaker notes ‘. A checkmark symbol (Ã¢ÂœÂ“) will appear next to this option when you click on it.

To add the text you want, simply click on the speaker notes area and type it in.

Remember, you can view these speaker notes in the Presenter View .

10. Keep Up with Presenter View

With Presenter View in Google Slides, you can see your current slide, speaker notes, and upcoming slides. What’s great about this feature is that only you, the presenter, can see this view, while the audience only sees the slideshow.

To use Presenter View, click the drop-down arrow next to the ‘ Slideshow ‘ button and choose ‘ Presenter View ‘.

When you do this, your presentation will fill the entire screen, and a new window will open where you can view speaker notes and other details. This window won’t be visible to your audience.

11. Dictate Your Speaker Notes

Using Google Slides, you have the ability to dictate the notes for your presentation if your computer is equipped with a microphone. Here’s how you can do it:

Turn on your microphone.
Click on the Speaker Notes , located below the slide.
Then, navigate to Tools > Voice type speaker notes.

A microphone icon will then appear on the slide, as illustrated in a screenshot below.

Click on the microphone icon and begin speaking. Your spoken words will be automatically added to the speaker notes.

When you’re finished, click the microphone icon again to turn off voice typing. To remove the icon, click the ‘ X ‘ in the upper right corner.

12. Engage with Audience Questions

Google Slides enables interactive presentations by allowing you to take real-time questions from your audience.

Select the drop-down arrow next to the ‘ Slideshow ‘ button and pick ‘ Presenter View ‘.

Then, select ‘ Audience Tools ‘. Here, you’ll find the ‘ Audience Q&A ‘ option. Click ‘Start new ‘.

Google Slides will provide a link to your presentation. Share this with your audience.

As questions come in, they’ll show up in a designated box, ready for you to address them individually.

13. Keep the Audience Engaged with Appropriate Audio

Adding audio to your presentation can help connect with your audience and make your content more engaging. However, don’t use audio just to fill space, as it can distract the audience. Only include sound or audio if it complements the flow of the presentation and adds meaning.

Go to Insert > Audio .

A panel will open, allowing you to add audio from your Google Drive or shared files. You can also paste the URL of the specific audio you want to insert.

14. Collaborate in Real Time

ou can share your presentation with your audience and work together in real-time. It’s also possible to create a link that can be used on your website or sent through email.

Click the Share button next to the Slideshow button.

Then, select the people or groups you want to share the presentation with and click Done .

With Google Slides, you can set the access level for each person. This means you can decide if a particular person can view, edit, or comment on the presentation.

You can also choose if only specific people can access the presentation or if anyone with the link can view it.

15. Put Your Google Slides Presentation on a Website

You can place your Google Slides presentation on a website, allowing people to view it without needing to log into their Google accounts. However, they won’t be able to comment or make changes to the presentation.

Follow these steps: Go to File > Share > Publish to Web .

A panel will appear where you can set when the slideshow starts, how quickly the slides advance automatically, and adjust other settings.

Google Slides may have been late to join the presentation scene, but it quickly became a favorite for millions of people who make presentations. Its excellent features like easy sharing, unlimited history of revisions, and real-time collaboration make it a user-friendly tool for crafting engaging presentations on any subject.

1. Add Transition Effect to Slide

For starters, you can apply transition effects to your slides. The transitions will come into effect whenever you move from one slide to the next during a presentation. Google Slides supports transition effects such as dissolve, slide, fade, flip, bounce, etc.

To add a transition effect, right-click on the slide from the left sidebar. Select Transition from the list.

You will see Motion sidebar will appear on the right side. Under the Slide transition section, choose a transition effect for the current slide. You can adjust the speed of transition using the slider that shows up.

Note: You can only add one transition effect per slide.

2. Add Same Transition Effect to All Slides

Using the above tip, you can add transitions to other slides. You can use different transition effects for each slide. However, if you want your presentation to be constant, you can apply the same transition to every slide.

3. Add Animation to Objects

You can animate images, text, shapes, and other objects in Google Slides. To add animation on any object, right-click on it and select Animate. Alternatively, select the object, click on Insert > Animation.

The Motion sidebar will open on the right side. By default, animations are added with Fade in effect. However, you can change it. Expand the animation section under Object animations. Choose the animation effect and how the animation should start (on click, after previous, with previous) from the available drop-down boxes. You can adjust the speed of the animation from the slider too.

4. Add Multiple Animations

Interestingly, you can add multiple animations to the same object. For instance, you can add an animation once, animate another object, and then animate the first object again. That way, you don’t need to add the same object again. The result depends on your creativity and what you want to achieve.

To add more animations to the same object, select the object. Click on Add animation from the Motion panel that appears when you right-click on the object and select Animation.

5. Rearrange Animations

When you have added multiple animations to the slide, you can reorder them. Animations are arranged in the Motion panel in the order that they will play. To change their order, drag and move them using the 8-dot icon available next to the animation name.

6. Check Animations Added to an Object

When multiple animations are added to a slide, that can confuse you to figure out which ones are added to a particular object.

To view and identify the object’s animations, click on the View option present in the top bar and select Motions or Animations. That will open the Motion panel.

Now there are two ways to check the animations. Firstly, with the Motion panel open, click on the object. Google will highlight the animations for that object.

Alternatively, you will see the object icon before the animations. That will also help in identifying the animation.

7. Preview Animations

To be sure whether the animations are right, you can preview them without playing your entire Google Slide. For that, click on the Play button under the Object animations section in the Motion panel.

8. Animate Lists or Bullet Points

If you want to show list items one-by-one, you can use animations for the same. For that, select the text box containing your list items. Right-click on the text box and select Animate.

Check the box next to By paragraph under the animation for the text box. In case you want all the list items to appear at once, uncheck the By paragraph box.

You can use the same feature to animate multiple paragraphs. One paragraph will appear at a time followed by the next.

9. Use Different Animations for List Items

Another creative way to animate lists is to add a different animation effect to your list items. For that, you will have to add each list item as a new text box. Then add animation to each point individually.

10. Animate Multiple Items

If you want multiple items to have the same animation, you should group them. For that, drag your mouse over the items that you want to group. A blue selection box will appear around the selected images. With all the objects selected, right-click on any of them and select Animate. You will notice all the selected objects will appear in the right panel.

11. Delete Animations or Transitions

To remove the transition effect from any slide, open the Motion panel. For that, click View > Motions. Then select None under the Slide transition section.

To remove the animation from an object, select the object. The animations for that object will be highlighted in the Motion panel. Expand the added animation and click on the Delete icon.

Bring Presentations to Life

You can use animations in multiple ways . For instance, you can make animated timelines, create graphs where each bar will show up one after the other, animated bullet lists, and much more. However, we would suggest don’t go overboard with animations. Sometimes, less is more.

Free and accessible: Anyone with a Google account can access and use Google Slides, making it a cost-effective solution for individuals, students, and businesses of all sizes.

User-friendly interface: Even those with limited technical experience can easily navigate Google Slides and create compelling presentations.

Beyond the basics, Google Slides offers a treasure trove of features to elevate your presentations:

Slides Interlinking

You may use Google Slides to connect to websites and photos, files stored on Google Drive, and even other slides inside your presentation!

You can also connect slides. Therefore, it is easy to shift from one slide to the next. After inserting the link, select “Slides in the presentation” as the target. Here, you can choose which slide to link.

By following this method, you can efficiently arrange your presentations.

Slide Interlinking

Speaker Notes

Speaker notes come into the limelight when the presenter loses his focus or critical points during the presentation. Most of the time, they have extra information or reminders that the public can’t see. When using Google Slides, you may add speaker notes by going to the “View” option and selecting “Speaker notes.” Make sure you confidently make your speech using these notes to jot down essential topics, talking signals, or references.

Utilize Smart Guides and Alignment Tools

The smart guidelines and alignment tools in Google Slides can help you create a professional and aesthetically pleasing presentation. One of the most effective ways to optimize Google Slides for making impressive presentations. These features make it easier to line up things on your slides correctly. Smart guides will display automatically as you move or resize them to help you align things with other objects or the slide. Objects can be uniformly distributed across the slide or aligned horizontally and vertically using the alignment tools.

Add some music to the mix!

It is impossible to incorporate background music into Google Slides presentations now. But don’t worry—we have the ideal Google Slides hack to resolve this! Just copy the URL of the appropriate music or sound effect on YouTube. After that, choose a format and insert the video into your presentation. Put the video in a corner or shrink it to make it smaller and less noticeable on the slide.

Including movies in your presentation is a great approach to make it more interactive and engaging. Press “Insert” and then “Video.”

You can even search for videos on YouTube without leaving your slideshow—no need to open a new tab to type YouTube. Video files saved to your Google Drive account can be located by searching or directly attaching a URL to an online video.

To access the Format options menu, which contains tools for editing and formatting your video, you need to click on the video player itself. A side window with format options will pop up when you click this button. Zoom in or out, change the orientation and play about with the drop shadow and other video playback controls.

Accept questions from your audience

A more engaging and participatory presentation is more likely to capture the audience’s attention than, for example, a biased one. One advantage of using Google Slides—its cloud-based nature—is that it facilitates real-time audience interaction, including question-and-answer sessions.

Click on the “Presentation tab” and select “Presentation View”. Choose “Audience Tools” from the pop-up bar and then click on the Start New button” at the bottom. Google Slides generates a sharable link. Once your audience starts sending you questions, these appear on the box. Answer these questions over here.

Open “Presenter view”

Integrate Google Slides with Chromecast

The Google Home App has a simple method that connects Google Slides with Chromecast. The app can be easily accessed on both Android and iOS devices. For the same, open the application and pair it with the Chromecast. You could then share your screen with the monitor. You are ready to give your next talk without extra cables or wires.

For a smooth screen-sharing experience, turn your phone into airplane mode before you start. It will prevent any annoying pop-ups or notifications from disturbing your audience.

Publish Your Presentation to the Web

Suppose the user you share your presentation with does not have a Google account. In that case, you can also publish your presentation on the web. Go to the “File” menu and select the “Publish to the Web” option.

Two features will be available on the interface. The “Link” tab allows you to modify the sharing behavior of the slideshow. Sharing documents with others (without sending an email invitation) is its primary function.

Click on the “Embed” tab if you want to insert the slideshow on another website. You may change its size, progress, and more from this spot.

Editing a Video

Using its built-in interface, you can also edit movies quickly and easily in Google Slides. Now, you don’t have to use any other application to edit a Slides video. Drag and drop the video on the Slides and right-click to explore the Editing options.

Various Video Options will be displayed on the right side once you do this. You may quickly edit the video by trimming it, adding sound, and more. The tool may need more features, but it will help you save time while creating an interactive presentation.

Import and Export Files

Google Slides offers a smooth interface for importing and exporting documents in various formats. Go to File > Import if you’re using PowerPoint and want to transfer it to Google Slides for editing. Open the presentation you want to change. It is recommended that you evaluate your text because there will be a change to its overall formatting.

Export the document in different formats by clicking on File > “Download As” to start the process. Various export options, including PPT, PDF, and ODP, are available here.

Move Slides between Different Presentations

Doing this simple task in Google Slides may save a lot of time and effort. It would be helpful if the users copy and paste the content from one slide to another. Open the initial presentation and choose a slide to complete this. To copy the context from a slide, click Ctrl+C on your keyboard. After that, in the second presentation, you can copy and paste the entire slide by pressing Ctrl + V or using the right mouse button (>) on your computer.

On the other hand, you have the option to attach the copied slide. Change the original presentation with a simple click and see them seamlessly reflected in the other slide. The copied slide will have an “update” button.

Turn Your Cursor into a Laser Pointer

An intriguing Google Slides hack allows you to transform your mouse pointer into a laser pointer. That way, you can focus on certain things on the slide without using a laser marker once you click on “Present” to start the slideshow. You may now change your mouse pointer into a red laser-like pointer by clicking the “Pointer” field in the bottom panel that lists all the possible features. Click on the same button to turn it off.

Get G-Suite Add-ons

If you want to explore more features of Google Slides, then check out G-Suite Add-ons. Browse through the Main Menu and select the “Add-ons” tab. It is where you can view the currently available extensions and discover even more available options. Mathematical calculations, expert charts, animations, and other options are all at your fingertips.

Wireless Streaming to the Big Screen

Slides presentations created in Google Slides may now be streamed to Chromecast devices with a simple button click. Project your presentation onto a large screen. Using your mobile device, you can access speaker notes, monitor your pace, and do much more with the integrated timer.

Use shapes to customize your slides

Shapes can be filled and outlined with a variety of colors. Create a background of a light neutral color with shapes of muted colors for a stunningly minimalist look. Also, you can use the scribble tool to create your doodles and scribbles. Google Slides will edit your scribbles, so you don’t have to worry about perfection.

How do I make my Google Slides aesthetic?

Google Slides: Hacks, Tips, and Tricks for Teachers (Part I)

Because over and over I see teachers needing the nitty gritty back-end info about Google Slides that will let them use it for their own creative ideas.

For today, feel free to call me Captain Nitty-Gritty. We’re going deep into the platform, so buckle up! These are answers to the questions I’m seeing a lot from the wonderful teachers in my membership, The Lighthouse, in my Facebook group, Creative High School English, and in my inbox. I hope they will be helpful to you!

This is the first in a series of two Google Slides tutorials posts I’m going to be sharing. Today we’re focusing in on customizing slides, forcing copies, creating interactive slides, designing beautiful slides, creating digital interactive notebooks, formatting virtual galleries and easily adding audio to slides. This post starts with more basic concepts and moves into more advanced possibilities; please pick and choose what’s most helpful to you. Don’t miss the very last tip – it’s my FAVORITE (and possibly the subject of a whole blog post where we can dive deeper before long!).

Five Hacks for Google Slides

“What’s my favorite G Suite for Education tool?” asked a Google Educator Level 1 session participant. “Google Slides. You can do so much with it!” said another. Slides offers many exciting features that make it a versatile assistant for educators. In this blog entry, let’s take a look at five Google Slides hacks you may find useful. These may deepen your appreciation for Google Slides and increase your productivity.

Jumpin’ Jack Slides

“I’m so tired, today felt like being stuck in a crossfire hurricane ,” said a friend. At the time, I missed the reference. Classrooms can be tumultuous. The right slide deck can dazzle, amaze, and engage learners of any age. Many agree that a potent message is key. The TED Talks blog lists ten tips worth reviewing. The fifth tip from that list provides our first hack.

Hack #1 – Enhance with Pictures

“Use photos that enhance meaning,” says Aaron Weyenberg ( Director, TED ). That seems obvious, right? Aaron encourages us to focus on message first, then to select images that enhance. When I create my Google Slides, I find myself crafting my message and looking for images at the same time. Aaron’s more measured approach involves finding images AFTER the message.

Let’s say that you have gathered your images into a folder. Now you have ahead of you the repetitive task of inserting those images and adding words. What if there was an easier way?

Matt Miller and Alice Keeler suggest there is. Use the Drive Slides Chrome extension. This extension makes it easy to create a Google Slides presentation. Here’s how:

Store images for an upcoming presentation in your Google Drive folder in JPG, PNG, or GIF format.
Open your images folder in Google Drive.
Click the DriveSlides icon. You will see several prompts to click through (most about permissions).
DriveSlides will create a Google Slides slidedeck, inserting your images for you.
Customize your Slides slide deck theme, shuffling slides with pre-loaded images around.

One observation I made while DriveSlides worked: I had named each image (e.g. Slide 1, Slide 2) with a vague hope. The hope was that DriveSlides would place the images in the order I wanted. That’s not the way it worked. The image placement on slides appeared random. One of the creators (Alice Keeler and Matt Miller) of Drive Slides has made a video walkthrough. Check it out.

Hack #2 – Use Speaker Notes

“Why don’t you attend Dale Carnegie’s public speaking workshop?” suggested my dad. He had seen my last presentation, one where I felt compelled to read from my notes. A short time later, at seventeen, I put Dale Carnegie’s presentation strategies to work. With those strategies in mind, I thought I had to present without notes. Of course, I was wrong. In time, I learned to rely on slide notes. You can, too.

When presenting now, I use a combination of engaging images that trigger my memory. Slide notes assist me when trying to remember key facts, research, and details. Use slide notes in Google Slides to assist your memory.

Take advantage of a few Chrome extensions to enrich the Slide Notes experience. For example:

SlideSpeech : It converts your slide notes into audio narration for each of the slides. This narrated slide show is available for viewing via the SlideSpeech mobile apps.
Auto Resize Speaker Notes : Allows you to resize the slide previews. To do this, resize the Speaker Notes or selec a size via the sidebar. See the effect of auto resize in the image below.

Hack #3 – Type with Your Voice

Did you know you can dictate text into Slides’ speaker notes section? This could be a time saver for you rather than typing up everything you know.

To do this, follow these simple instructions for English dictation:

Turn on your microphone.
Use voice typing (Go to Tools then select Voice type speaker notes).
Use voice commands to edit and format your text.

Adding speaker notes has never been easier. Give it a try!

Hack #4 – Create a Hyperlinked Slide Deck

Did you know you could create a hyperlinked slideshow? This is a slideshow for which you have created some form of navigation. Navigation might appear as a table of contents that you click on to jump around the slide deck.

Hack #5 – Add Audio to Your Slides

One of my favorite PowerPoint features enables me to insert audio recordings. In Google Slides, the only way to put audio in was to insert a YouTube video.

With the Audio Player for Slides , you can insert audio per slide. As you can see from the screen shots below, you can add audio to each slide. Put your audio files in MP3 format in Google Drive.

I also much prefer creating with Google Slides rather than Google Docs. I’ve found that Google Slides is much more flexible, and it allows for more creativity.

I’m often told that my resources look very professional, and folks are surprised when they find out that I create with Google Slides. I confess that I do have an artistic eye, however, most of what I do is not actually that difficult. I thought I would share some of my hacks with you so that you can start creating in Google Slides also.

10 Hacks for Creating with Google Slides

1. you can reformat the size of the slide to be the size of a piece of paper..

This probably seems obvious to most of you, however, figuring this out was transformative for me. I had previously been creating all documents in Google Docs, and I had found the process to be quite cumbersome. As soon as I realized that I could make printed handouts with Google Slides I made the switch.

To reformat the side of the page, just click file – page setup, and change the width of the page to 8.5 and the height to 11. You’re all set!

2. You can create titles with WordArt and then move them wherever you want on the page.

To create WordArt text, just click insert – WordArt.

You can manipulate and rearrange WordArt titles in Google Slides. You can also select two titles, and resize them at the same time. Finally, the fill for a WordArt title can be a different color than the outline. This can be helpful when you’re trying to make words stand out from a picture.

3. You can insert images just by using the url.

If you find an image you want to include in your Google Slides presentation, you can add the image simply by copying the url . Just copy the url , and then click insert – image – by url . Google will pull the image from the web and insert it into your slides.

4. You can add a drop shadow or a reflection to any WordArt text or images that you insert.

This task couldn’t be simpler. Just click on the WordArt text or the image. Once you do, an option titled “format options” will appear in the toolbar. Within the sidebar, many options appear, including adding a drop shadow. You can also manipulate the drop shadow so that the angle or visibility changes.

The difference with the drop shadow is subtle, however, it makes the text stand out a bit better, and make it easier for students to read.

5. You can download any Google Slides document as a PowerPoint

This is probably my most important tip. Some folks really prefer PowerPoint. I get this, as some schools don’t allow Google, and there are more manipulative possibilities in PowerPoint. With any Google Slides document, just click file – download as. Presto, you now have the same slideshow in PowerPoint! There might be some formatting differences, however, the documents will be mostly the same. You may need to download some fonts to make the document look the same.

6. You can add music to Google Slideshows – Sort of.

One of the biggest complaints about Google Slides is the inability to add music. I would love to be able to add music as a background file, and I hope that they will add that possibility as a feature for the future. However, in the meantime, there are some work arounds for adding in music or sound effects.

Find the song or sound effect on Youtube. Then copy the url for the video. Insert the video into Google Slides (Insert – Video). Then, if you click format options, you can change how the video plays. You can have the music start automatically, or by click. Most importantly, you can select a smaller portion of the music to play.

If you plan on having the video play automatically, decrease the size of the video so that it’s hidden within the slide. As you can see from above, my video is right in the corner.

7. You can create a fill for a text box or shape that is not opaque.

You probably know that you can change the color of the background for any text box or shape. You can also make it so the textbox is partly transparent. With the shape selected, click on the fill bucket. Then, click on the button that says “custom.” Click the lever on the far right to make the shape more transparent.

8. You can crop an image around a shape.

If you want to insert a portrait of a famous individual from history, you can actually use a shape to eliminate a random background.

First, just use the crop tool (in the toolbar), to focus in on the section of the image that you would like to crop.

Then, use the the little down arrow next to the crop tool. This is titled the “mask tool.” You can pick a shape to crop the tool to the correct size. The only issue with this tool is the fact that you can’t be exact with the way in which you would like the image cropped. Still, you can make an image fit within a slide much better than i would otherwise.

9. You can make some of the Google Slide spreadsheet part of the background.

Sometimes, you might want to have your students work with a Google Slides file themselves. I’ve had students edit a Google Slides sheet to add in their own details and information. Still, when you do so, you might want to lock some of the information or images provided on the page.

To create a slide with a “locked” background, just make a copy of the slide you’ve created, and paste the slide as the next slide in the slideshow. Then, delete everything on the slide EXCEPT the items you want to lock in the background. Click on the slide again so it’s highlighted in the sidebar. Then, click file – download as – jpeg. The image will appear as a download at the bottom of your browser. Click back to the original slide, and add in the image as the new background. Delete out all of the extra information that you no longer need. You now have a locked background slide.

10. You can make a copy of any Google Slides presentation by clicking file – make a copy.

This is the most important tip of them all! If you have come across a Google Slides presentation you would like, you might notice that the slideshow is labeled “view only.” Just click – file – make a copy. This will provide you with your own copy of the document for editing and you can add the document to your own slides. If you ask for permission to edit, you’re asking to edit the original version. It’s not likely that you’ll gain permission.

6 Google Slides image editing hacks

As the old saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, right? This is definitely something we live by here at BrightCarbon as we always aim to use less text and more visuals to make our presentations powerful and engaging. So, if you’re looking for new ways to enhance your presentations, why not start with the pictures? Both PowerPoint and Google Slides offer some great image editing tools that are so easy to use you don’t need to be an expert to make your presentation look striking, but we’re going to focus our time today on what Google Slides image editing can offer.

Before we get started, if you need quality stock photos for your presentation, you can try sites like Unsplash or Pexels , as they offer a large online library of copyright-free, high definition images.

Now, with that sorted, here are six very simple and effective editing tips to help take your presentation to the next level.

1. Cropping and masking

The crop tool allows you to trim the edges of an image or remove any unwanted sections. Cropping helps bring focus to the relevant part of the picture and can also help develop a style or theme in your deck. For instance, you could crop all your images to a square for a consistent design identity.

How: To start, open a presentation and go to Insert on the menu bar, scroll down to Image and select Upload from computer . Choose the image you want to insert and click Open . Now the picture has been inserted, let’s crop it. Double-click on the image and drag the black tabs to your desired size. Now hit enter to make the crop. Make sure you are dragging the black tabs and not the blue nodes, as those will change the size of your picture. If you accidentally pull the blue nodes, just hit the Undo button (Ctrl + z) and try again.

Cropping is one way to hide parts of a picture, another is masking. With masking you simply add shapes over the top of your picture to hide the unwanted parts.

Sometimes simply cropping a picture or altering its dimensions can change the meaning of a slide completely. By simply cropping three images to equal rectangular shapes you can create an impactful agenda slide highlighting different sections in your presentation. Really simple, but so effective!

You can also use the same rectangle crop to demonstrate an evolution, sequence or timeline, as seen on the slide below which shows the step by step process of how plastic can end up on our plates.

Next, by cropping various pictures to the same shape and size, we have created a collage effect. If you’re struggling to express your message with just one picture, a collage is a great alternative to bring various ideas together – in this case to show the different ways in which plastic can affect marine life.

Placing two cropped pictures side-by-side is an easy way to make a comparison or show a before-and-after, as we did here.

2. Crop to shape

This Google Slides image editing hack is one of our favourites, will soon become a firm favourite in your toolkit. This nifty tool allows you to change the shape of your picture to a circle, triangle or star, for example.

How: To crop your image to a particular shape, click on the arrow next to the Crop image icon, scroll down to Shape and select the shape you want. There are lots of shapes, arrows and callout designs to choose from, like the heart example below.

If you want to avoid a warped or stretched image, you need to make sure your picture has equal proportions. To do this go to Format , scroll down to Format options and click the Size & Position box to make sure the width and height are equal.

Images cropped to shape can become much more compelling. By cropping different parts of this picture to hexagon shapes to resemble the net that’s trapping the turtle.

Here, by cropping the picture to a pentagon shape, you can create a slicker, more professional looking title slide.

By cropping a slightly different image to a circle and layering it on top of another image, you can easily create a magnifying glass effect- a great way to show a larger scene without missing important details.

3 . Add a border

Adding a simple border around your images can sometimes help them look more polished. Having an element like a border consistently throughout your presentation, gives it a strong identity and style.

How: Select your image then go to the menu bar and click on the Border Color icon to select the colour you want. If you want to make the border thinner or thicker, click on the Border weight icon and select your desired weight.

4. Image Callout

Image callout is a design must-have as it is so incredibly useful and visually powerful. In a callout, you cut out a circle to a specific part of the picture, to draw attention to it. We have highlighted the faces in the crowd to create focus points on the image.

In order to achieve this effect, you need to go through a few more steps.

How: Firstly, Copy and Paste the image you want to edit, then overlay it over the original image. Click the drop-down button next to the Crop tool, scroll down to Shapes and select the oval shape. Once this is done, go to Format , scroll down to Format options and click the Size & Position box in the format options and make sure the width and height are equal to create a perfect circle. On the original image, click on the adjustment box in Format options and reduce the brightness. This will make sure that your callout stands out against the original image.

5. Image overlay

Positioning text over images can look very effective… if done well. Text can easily get lost on top of a busy image and become hard to read, but we’ve got a handy trick you can use to get around this problem – image overlay! This means adding a translucent rectangle on top of an image: it should be dark enough so that you can read the text, but clear enough that you can see the picture.

How: Go to Insert on the menu bar, scroll down to Shape , then Shapes and choose the shape you need. In most cases it’s a rectangle. Grab the corners and drag until your rectangle is the exact size of your picture and perfectly positioned on top of the image. Then go to the Fill color icon button on the menu bar. Select the black colour option and then click Custom at the bottom. A small window will open with two bars – one for the colour of your shape and the other for the transparency. Lower the transparency until it’s almost fully transparent: it needs to be just dark enough to read the text, whilst making sure the picture is still clear.

See how this simple and subtle image overlay helps the text stand out.

You can also choose a custom colour overlay like on the slide below. Using a shade of blue that fits with the theme of the deck helps to maintain brand identity, whilst also slightly muting the image so that the focus is on the quote instead.

6. Format Options

Once you’ve decided on the size and shape of your picture, you can start playing with its format. With Google Slides you can adjust the transparency , brightness , and contrast of your images, as well as change their colour . These simple alterations can make your presentations much sharper – and you don’t need to be a Photoshop expert to be able to do them!

How: To start, click the image then go to Format on the menu bar. Scroll down to Format options… and a sidebar will pop up containing the following tools.

Using recolour you can change the colour of your image to either match the theme of your presentation or, as in this case, to create some contrast.

Transparency

This is a useful feature that can be used on both images and shapes. Transparency works a treat for background images, as it helps fade back the image so that the text becomes the focus and is easier to read.

How to: Once you have opened the Format options bar, click on Adjustments and you will see the Transparency cursor. Move it up to your preferred level. Then once you are satisfied, you can click on your image and pull the corners until it fills the slide.

Adding transparency to shapes can be useful too, particularly for overlaying text boxes on top of images.

This tool is handy if your original picture is dark or faded. This simple adjustment can highlight the best features of your photo and give it a more professional look.

Drop Shadow

Drop Shadows are a tiny detail that can make a world of difference. It’s the simplest way to add depth and space between layers of shapes and images on the slide. The drop shadow effect on the circles below create a more realistic, 3D-like appearance.

I can’t find a way to adjust images that are placed as background images (for master pages). When I place an image as a background image it constrains the image to the slide proportions which results in squishing the photos. Is there any way to fix this?

Hello Katie, A solution could be to set a background image in the master. You can do this by clicking on the toolbar at the top on View > Master. In here click on one of the slides from the layouts (or you can create a new one if you want) and insert a new image from your computer. Position, crop and resize the picture so it covers the entire slide. Close the master by clicking on the “x button” at the top right of the slide. Once you are back to “normal view” you can right click on the slide and select “Apply layout”. You can choose the layout you just created with the BG image from here.

Awesome tips, so useful, I have a question, how do you insert images into shapes that you have imported from illustrator, into Google slides?

Hi Allun, Unfortunately at the time of writing it is not possible to crop images to a shape imported from Illustrator. You can only crop images to the default shapes offered by Google Slides. Many thanks!

Great ideas, is there any way to remove the cropped portion of the image from the file so the images don’t blow up the file size and make the document load really slowly?

Hi Shannon, Unfortunately there currently isn’t a way to do this within Slides. If you have any image editing software such as Photoshop then you could always crop the image within this software and upload just the section of the image you need. Hope this helps! Many thanks.

Greetings! Awesome ideas. The slide above with the turtle divided into a bunch of hexagons… how do you do that? I’m having fits. The masking tool just wants to make my whole image into a poorly proportioned hexagon instead of cutting out a portion of it like a cookie-cutter. Thanks!

Hi Dan, Glad you enjoyed the article! I’ve had this issue in the past so I know how annoying it can be. The way I do it is to have the image in the background, then using the hexagon shape tool I would place it over the part of the image I want cropping. Finally, simply copy and paste the image directly on top of the original and crop it down using the hexagon. This means that when you click to crop the image within the hexagon you can adjust the proportions to that of the original image.

I’d really like to know how you did the different colored circles around the Image Callouts in #4 and the “microscopic” image with the turtle. They really add to the pop of the images but I can’t seem to figure out how to do these in Google Slides.

Hi Liz. You place an image on the slide and then overlay the same image again and using the circular crop tool you crop to the section you want highlighting. Then you can recolour the background image so that the cropped image stands out. Once that’s done, if you want to change the colour of the circle border. Just click on the cropped photo and click on border colour on the toolbar to select the colour you want. Many thanks!

Google Slides converting specific images to circular will only make it oval.

I have many pictures within a slide presentation, and some will not convert to circular, they will form into an oval shape instead and only. I tried resizing the original picture to square, but this has not solved the problem. Can anyone help please?

Hi Susan. When you follow our step by step of “Crop to Shape” and your original photo is a landscape, it will crop as oval. So you need to double click the photo, so you get the crop, and then go to Format > Format Options and adjust the dimensions, make sure the height and width are the same.

Hi, super helpful tips. Thank you. I’m transitioning from Powerpoint and finding Slides a bit limiting, so these tips are awesome.

One thing I face often with Slides is where someone has put a picture in to the slide, and I want to make it a background so it can go full screen, and the other images in the slide master can still be seen over it.

In powerpoint, I’d literally Crtl+X the image, and then go to ‘change background’ – and hey presto, one option was ‘use clipboard’ – and the image I had cut would become the background image.

I can’t find any way to easily do this in Slides other than saving the image to a file, then re-uploading it as the background image.

Hi Allen. Unfortunately there is no ‘native’ way to compress with Google Slides. My advice would be to compress the photos on a third party software before bringing them onto Google Slides or export the presentation to PPT, then compress and either re-upload, or drag the compressed images into slides. Joining the UC Davis MSBA program was a life-changing decision for me.

After years of thoughtful consideration, my growth mindset and spirit as a lifelong learner propelled me to take the leap.

The importance of data-driven decision-making in today's business world was particularly compelling, and I couldn't ignore the value of the MSBA program.

The past nine months have been undeniably challenging. Without any background in math or engineering, I struggled more than my classmates.

Yet, the satisfaction of learning and discovering new skill sets affirmed my belief that I made the right choice. I'm becoming a more data-driven and skilled professional. In addition, our cohort worked hard together, and it almost felt like a big family, supporting, and loving each other under the same purpose and goals.

While mastering new skillsets kept me on my toes, the Aggie Hack presented a one-of-kind opportunity. It was a great chance to test everything I'd learned in a real-world setting. Regardless of the outcome, I knew it would be a valuable and enriching experience.

Team Chimak: Chicken, Beer and Business Acumen

For the hackathon, I joined forces with fellow MSBA students, Jihyun Kim and Mia Lai. Together, we're a data-driven trio with strong passion for analytics and data. With our diverse backgrounds in finance, marketing, and data, each of us brought a unique perspective and skillset to the hackathon, enriching our work.

The name "Chimak" is Korean for "chicken and beer." The three of us promised to celebrate with Chimak after the hackathon, which served as a great motivator as well.

Our Winning Strategy

Before we began, we devised a four-pronged approach for tackling the challenge.

1. Stand-out, Practical Solution: Recognizing that everyone would be using the same dataset, we prioritized creating a solution that stood out. We invested significant time in crafting an engaging narrative and impactful visualizations. Additionally, knowing San Francisco's focus on practical solutions, we dedicated substantial effort to developing a proposal that was realistic and readily implementable (no robot police here!).

2. Clear Roles and Responsibilities: With only 48 hours and a team of three, we maximized our efficiency by clearly dividing roles. Instead of working on the same task, we assigned ourselves distinct roles as data analyst, solution architect, and researcher. This focus allowed us to work efficiently within the tight timeframe.

3. In-Person Collaboration: While Zoom is convenient, we opted to work in-person to fully experience the collaborative spirit of the hackathon. This allowed us to share ideas and experiences more effectively.

4. Balance and Fun: While winning was an aspiration, our primary goals were to create lasting memories and leverage the knowledge we gained throughout the semester. The hackathon presented a perfect opportunity for both learning and enjoyment. We minimized stress about winning and focused on having fun and cherishing the experience together.

The 48-hour Amazing Race

This year a record 19 mixed teams of UC Davis MBA and MSBA students participated in the contest.

Our goal for the Aggie Hack was enhancing road safety and reducing traffic fatalities in San Francisco through data-driven strategies.

San Francisco has an ambitious goal of eliminating all traffic fatalities and severe injuries. Using data analytics, the city looks to identify high-risk locations, contributing factors, and collision patterns to develop safety strategies.

The first day was dedicated to deep data exploration and research. Our team tried to find what is causing San Francisco traffic collisions by analyzing traffic data to see collision patterns, trend, frequency. We also identified key factors in fatal accidents using Poisson regression, a generalized linear model form used to analyze count data

On the second day, armed with these insights, we deployed a random forest model. This model incorporated the previously identified features, along with two additional factors we believed influenced risk. In parallel, we prioritized crafting realistic and actionable solutions.

Even after going home, we met on Zoom to refine every detail of our presentation. We aimed to ensure it was not only filled with amazing insights and content but also visually captivating. The UC Davis Aggie Hack challenged teams to enhance road safety and reduce traffic fatalities in San Francisco through data-driven strategies.

During the first round, the field of 19 teams narrowed to eight finalists—including Team Chimak! We were fortunate to be among the teams that presented in person to expert judges and representatives from San Francisco. We were evaluated on business insights, data analysis, business storytelling and solution development.

At the final awards ceremony at Spark Social SF, the venue was illuminated by the sunshine, mirroring the upbeat spirit of our team. Even as the second-place announcement passed without our name, our team was still enjoying the great time we had, talking about our experiences and discussing how we would continue to deliver insights to the world.

When our team was announced as the winner, one of my teammates wept with joy. In the challenging job market, juggling full-time studies with uncertain outcomes can take a toll. We all understood that emotions ran high.

The Aggie Hack wasn't just about the award; it was a validation of our efforts and a confirmation that we're on the right track.

It held a deeper significance than simply a trophy. It represented only 48 hours of effort, but the hack was the culmination of our nine-month journey—and much more.

Google intensifies fight against YouTube adblockers

YouTube decided to shift its concentration to better performing ad formats and get rid of one of the existing formats.

Google just announced that it is intensifying its fight against adblockers on YouTube. The message was posted to the official YouTube support website.

The writing was on the wall. Reports about changes on YouTube designed to prevent users from using adblockers started in early 2023. Users with adblockers saw anti-adblocking prompts and Google ran several tests on YouTube to fight adblocking .

Google confirmed the crackdown on adblockers in November 2023. Affected users were given two options: turn off the adblocker on YouTube or pay for YouTube Premium.

New ways of making ads more endurable were discovered. Extensions that skip or fast forward ads appeared in extension stores.

Google did not only fight adblocking in browsers. It also is fighting against YouTube frontends, such as Invidious , and third-party YouTube apps. Google had some success in this regard in the past. In 2022, its actions caused YouTube Vanced to be discontinued .

Google's fight against third-party apps

Today's announcement puts Google's focus on third-party apps that "violate YouTube's Terms of Service". Here, Google is focusing on apps that include ad-blocking capabilities. The company mentions none in the announcement, but it clearly took a swing at Invidious last week already.

Google warns users of these apps that their experience may deteriorate soon. They may "experience buffering issues" or see errors such as "the following content is not available on this app" when trying to watch videos.

The terms on YouTube disallow apps to "turn off ads". Turning off ads "prevents the creator from being rewarded for viewership" according to Google. It fails to mention that it is keeping a big chunk of the revenue as the maintainer of the platform.

Google suggests that YouTube users who do not want to see ads subscribe to YouTube Premium.

The company will "take appropriate action" when it finds third-party apps that violate YouTube's terms.

Closing Words

Similar to Google Search, ads have become insufferable for many users of the service. There are too many of them, they may break the viewing experience, and they may show inappropriate content.

YouTube Premium is expensive. What weights more for some users is that its functionality is severely limited when compared to third-party apps.

The cat and mouse game continues.

They still don’t understand that none of these services (Invidious, Piped, etc…) even broke their ToU in the first place because they were never bound to them due to the simple fact that all of them don’t even use the official YouTube API. All these services do, in a nutshell, is scrape the publicly available site. There is really nothing YouTube can do to stop these thrid party services. They’re fighing a loosing battle.

Commercials and ads in general should be illegal.

They rape our minds and many are misleading.

So far, so good. Over the years, never encountered a single youTube ad whatsoever.

Currently been viewing all I want, on Waterfox with uBO and BlackFog Privacy systemwide. Not sure which is blocking better or first. Wish to hear from others’ experience.

While there’s a lot more to say, I’d like to stick to the topic on yt’s ads so much has been discussed.

Despicable google up to their usual ways.

yt-dlp. It’s had problems with Youtube API changes in the past, but currently it works wonders. I download 50-100 Youtube videos per day (stored for reference purposes.) Media-Downloader uses it as the backend downloader along with Aria.

uBlock Origin has successfully dealt with previous Youtube efforts to block videos from PCs using ad blockers. It’s team can respond quickly whenever a new Youtube block method appears – usually within hours.

This is one of the reasons why I now download YouTube videos and watch them locally with VLC player instead of watching them on the YouTube website. Not only does it bypass this nonsense, it also ensures that I have an archived copy of a video even if the account who uploaded it gets terminated and/or the video is no longer available on YouTube. Even before YouTube confirmed they were banning adblockers, I’ve been having occasional issues with buffering and error screens, so they were pretty much doing this for years before people even realized it. If YouTube bans downloaders next, I’m closing my account there and leaving the site for good.

Great idea Kaz, but unless a YouTube video is something I want to refer to a lot, I don’t want to fill up my storage with YouTube videos. I use YouTube a lot, but if one tells me to disable my ad blocker, I’m outahere and don’t bother. I agree with another person who commented this prevalence of having to disable ad blockers should be illegal. And agree with your saying if they ban downloaders next, I’m leaving also.

Is it that you download all YouTube videos should it be only to have a glimpse of their content? I happen as well to download videos for archiving and on the basis that, IMO, the video is sufficiently remarkable, informative, exceptional that I wouldn’t take the risk of not being able to access it should it ever be deleted on the servers. But if I had to consider downloading all (YouTube) videos which cross my surfing sessions, the disk would be full, not to mention that in my view such an approach is truly a waste, of time, of bandwidth …

Horrible company. I barely use YouTube anymore. I don’t watch anything on their bloated page, and if I do have to, I download the videos directly with ytdl.

FWIW–Next DNS has a new [to me] DNS Firewall that has so many ways of blocking malicious actors and tracking and advertising that I discovered it can break at least 10% of the sites I visit; nevertheless, I am continuing to use it because some of those 10% were sites I thought I could trust. It goes far beyond what the FF browser does if setting Next DNS as the preferred DNS over HTTPS.

I would never choose to watch youtube ads, but there are times when I need to watch a how-to video and don’t know what I would do in that case. I guess I would have to watch the ad(s) for that. As it stands, I will never again purchase an Android app and I don’t use Google search anymore. I block ads everywhere they can be blocked and I use frontends. I do have a household member who is glad to watch youtube with ads, does not care a bit. He also has zero ability or desire to make a purchase, so the joke is on them.

I pay for it. In my opinion it’s worth paying for because I watch a lot of YouTube and listen to YouTube Music at work for 10 hours a day. So for me it’s worth it. I pay yearly which gives me a discount for at $11.50 a month.

Let’s be honest, is the content on YouTube today THAT valuable…? I see more and more videos pop up on Odysee every minute, serious content creators are moving there. No, I don’t consider a girl in a bikini building a hut in snowy Alaska valuable content. I say let Google become the fastfood cesspool of garbage content like the way it’s heading now. The users who love that crap can watch ads all day. Also, the claim that they show ads so creators get paid is ridiculous, that’s not the whole truth. There also needs to be a discussion if it’s justified that someone who pretends to hear music for the first time makes videos about it and gets paid a million dollars for it, same goes for large-chested ladies that think they are guitarplayers or drummers. Oh and let’s also talk about the TRILLIONS of albums/songs that are illegally uploaded by users that Google do nothing about..other than host the files and calls it their own content that they now want to charge you for. Nope. uBlock Origin & Firefox is the way to go, and Odysee..until they too get greedy. Don’t start with the “Odysee is a NAZI platform” crap. You don’t have HAVE to watch everything you know…

Besides: Not succumbing to advertising is the punk rocker way of doing things. STICK IT TO THE MAN! YouTubers just want easy, copious amounts of money and try to pass their little hobby off as “work”. By not endorsing this lazy, easy money ethos that’s making our kids vain, stupid and jealous, dumbing down the whole planet’s population you’re STICKIN’ IT TO THE MAN!

But now you have to use VPN on Youtube to avoid signing in. Userscripts that did good job before on Youtube no longer work.

No I do not.

Maybe you are lucky. I do not allow Google cookies, so if I do not use VPN, I have to dismiss every popup on every new Google/YouTube tab.

One problem with premium, I have seen a few of the content creators I watch have problems with getting adds even though they are subscribed to Youtube Premium. When checking with Youtube they are told everything is working as it should (That is almost a direct quote from one email a content creator shared.)

This is the crux of it. Google and Facebook have had over twenty years to self-regulate the online advertising industry and reform it into something tolerable, however they have chosen not to do so and instead they doubled-down and decided to concentrate on increasing their already obscene amounts of profit instead.

Under their monopoly, ads became ridiculously obnoxious with no consideration for the end user experience, they are CPU heavy, bandwidth heavy, laden with privacy-invading trackers that stalk people both online and offline in order to build profiles on them, and they are regularly used to push malware and scams with inadequate measures to prevent this. Basically, they have enshittified the entire internet and electronic devices at the expense of the masses using them.

F#ck Google. It’s obvious the online advertising industry is incapable of regulating itself voluntarily. The only way to reel these vampiric organisations in is to take matters into our own hands – in conjunction with pushing for heavy legal regulation of the online advertising industry.

For me personally, I would rather we took back the internet and transitioned to more decentralised “by the people, for the people” places, like the Fediverse.

I wonder what method of blocking YouTube ads will be impossible to patch for them… We know that they have methods to deal with adblock extensions and built-in adblockers in browsers. There are also crawlers (NewPipe, SmartTube, Invidious), which they might be able to detect behaviorally. Invidious instances frequently rotate their IP addresses to evade the YouTube hammer.

The above methods seem to be easy to moderately difficult to patch. But what about e.g. ReVanced on Android phones / tablets, which is a patched version of the official YouTube app? How would they block that one safely? Further, in some locations YouTube hasn’t rolled out ads, for example in Albania or Russia (due to the sanctions, in the latter case)… With a VPN, it is trivially easy to make YouTube believe that you reach them from those locations… If they are dead serious about this, they would also have to fight VPNs or rather specific servers of those VPNs. That will be a challenge in its own right, I don’t know of any (commercial) streaming service that has successfully locked out any and all VPNs really…

I am steadfast in my refusal to pay for YouTube Premium, because I refuse to feed the kraken. “Go elsewhere” sounds nice and I certainly would if I could, but sadly YouTube is still basically a monopoly in the online video space. Due to them being a monopoly (with all the associated abuses) that also harvests user data, I also believe that no one must touch them with silk gloves. They want to fight, I fight back due to a lack of alternatives.

Maybe if they have dealt with solutions like uBlock Origin, Brave, and major apps like NewPipe, they will stop this and call it a win, since this will defeat 95%+ of all adblock users. I will still be there with VPN set to an ad-free location before I ever pay Google even a dime. I promise.

Maybe someone would eventually develop qBittorrent type client app that will on surface play a YouTube video like FreeTube does but also automatically downloads YouTube videos and seeds it on p2p network via public torrent trackers or DHT as long as user wants to, essentially unofficially turning YouTube into decentralized platform via open source p2p video playing app that is almost independent of YouTube.

I don’t mind the ads, many can be skipped after a brief preview. To watch good content for free. Seems like a reasonable trade off. As long as content creators stay on YouTube it will be the platform for viewers. If I really disliked the ads, I would pay to avoid them.

The Libredirect extension loads Invidious Instances the latter of which is a list of servers run by enthusiasts to avoid watching youtube directly. There’s also Privacyredirect, but it always redirects to dark mode sites which I don’t like and don’t use for that reason.

I notice now on The Guardian news media site that embedded youtube videos don’t work anymore, but the simple workaround is to copy the description below the video and then use that as a search string on your favourite search engine. From there load the video and Libredirect will spring into action and Bob’s your uncle. :D

YouTube embedded videos on The Guardian aren’t handled here as well be it via embedded Invidious (working instances) nor by embedded Piped (working instances).

Seems the site handles a “specially crafted” YouTube api. I’ve always had problems with that domain. An alternative is to visit their YouTube site instead :

Personally I redirect YouTube to Piped and if embedded is problematic I open the redirected YouTube page instead.

So the perspective would be YouTube with ads or YouTube Premium, non negotiable. Looks like anyone refusing advertisement and subscription fee is stuck. I don’t know if a scorpion is the only animal that can kill its ‘self’ (with its tail) when it finds no solution for its survival, but I can say that, though being a Scorpio, should I be stuck between two alternatives I both refuse I’d survive and strive for a Plan B (you know, like in the movies!)

We’ll see how things get along. Right now, as I write, Invidious still works (at least [https://yewtu.be/] with proxied videos = enabled, haven’t tested other Invidious instances), as well as Piped (at least some with proper settings).

Tough times ahead perhaps for users who choose a YouTube front-end. One thing is sure : cat and mouse game seldom ends with the game. Should it with YouTube videos that I’d escape and totally abandon YouTube. But we’re not at that point yet.

Tom my dude, if they really manage to block Invidious once and for all, you can always get a VPN, set it to, I don’t know, Albania or Russia maybe… and continue to use the official website without ads, as those locations don’t have any. That’s what I would do in retaliation. I would gladly go elsewhere, but obviously, we are talking about a de facto monopolist here.

Hi Iron Heart, hi Tom, go to talk to both of you again, after a long time. I use FreeTube and today it still works. I don’t know if/how it will be affected. If it isI’ll try IH’s VPN trick — I am using a VPN, which does have servers in Russia and Albania.

VPN method wont last because they just ban the whole Russia and Albania..

Its time people moved on from adtube. Rumble or X are excellent alternatives, content creators will take a hit in the migration but eventually come out on top, best of all, no censorship for ideological beliefs. Content creators can feature products that align with their base. You can help by making youtube the last place you look, same with google, stand up and make a difference. Imagine dr disrespect unleashed on rumble. Die in a fire youtube!

There are better alternatives to YouTube that don’t have censorship. A lot of YouTube channels also stream on other platforms.
