As you probably know already, Cambridge English exams usually have some or all of the following parts: Reading, Writing, Use of English and Listening. In this post I am going to talk about the FCE Writing B2 part and, more specifically, about how to write an essay for FCE Writing . We will see a good example of an essay for FCE and you can check out a full FCE Writing Guide where you can find more examples of emails , letters and other types of writings.

What are the parts of the FCE Writing?

The First (FCE) Writing has only two parts. For each part, you must write a composition which will depend on the instructions you receive for each task. For the  first part , you will always be asked to  write an essay , as it is the only option provided. However, in the  second part , they allow you to choose one out of 3 options. These include  different types of writing , which are : letters/emails ,  articles ,  reviews and  reports . Each piece of writing must have between 140 and 190 words , approximately.

Since they are different types of writing , the language and structures to use will also differ. But that’s what I’m here for, to explain to you exactly how to write each part. And today, I’m starting with  how to write an essay .

How to Write an Essay for FCE Writing

An  essay is an opinion writing with which we analyse a topic , a situation or an issue from different points of view , providing different arguments and expressing our opinion about it. For this reason, an  essay must have the following features:

  • Purpose: What we usually do with an essay is to analyse and assess a topic, situation or issue which, in some way, is interesting or controversial. It is normally set as a writing task after a class debate. In the exam, you have to imagine the debate, obviously.
  • Tone and style: Given that you’re writing about a  serious or controversial issue , an essay is written in a formal style, so we must stick to an objective tone and style . Our language must be formal, thus avoiding words that are simply too common or generic (E.g.:  things, stuff, get,   etc.) and contractions (E.g.:  can’t, don’t, won’t,  etc.).
  • Structure: Like every piece of writing,  an essay must present a defined structure . For starters, we can choose either to give it a title or not. Personally, I would say that it is more appropriate to have an essay with title . Then, the body must be divided into introduction, idea 1, idea 2, idea 3 and conclusion. This means that, in general,  essays must have 5 paragraphs ,   although it is not entirely necessary.
  • Opinion:  There are countless ways of expressing your opinion in an essay, so you must choose the one that suits you best. However,  it is advisable to remain impartial throughout your writing and give your opinion only in the last paragraph , as a conclusion. But, as I say, it is optional. The most important thing is that you justify everything you say in your essay.
  • Coherence: Coherence is essential in every type of writing, but especially in an essay. As it tends to be an argumentative text, you must avoid writing incoherent paragraphs that have nothing to do with one another. Your ideas must  follow a logical order and be well connected with appropriate linkers .

FCE Writing Essay Example

Now that we are familiar with the  characteristics of an essay for First (FCE) Writing , let’s take a look at an  example of an essay at B2 level , both at the task and at a sample answer.

Instructions of an Essay

In the following image you can see the instructions of an essay which involves a typical topic, that of the environment:

In these instructions, we must pay attention to the following:

  • The  first paragraph introduces the topic: … different ways in which you can protect the environment.
  • The  second sentence is usually the same in every task:  Write an essay using  all the notes…
  • In the box , you are given the main topic as a question and they give you something to talk about:  recycle, using bicycles and walking, your own idea . As you can see, you have to come up with the third idea, something connected to the topic which is not provided in the exam task.

Given the model task above, each paragraph will correspond to a different idea, apart from the introduction and conclusion. Again, it is only natural to have 5 paragraphs. So, the best way to know how to write an essay for FCE Writing is to take a look at an  example of an actual essay for FCE Writing :

How to Write an Essay for FCE sample answer / cómo escribir un essay para Fce ejemplo respuesta

At first sight, the essay has  a title and 5 paragraphs (introduction + idea 1 + idea 2 + idea 3 + conclusion). And if we stop to read the essay more carefully, we’ll notice the following things:

  • The paragraphs are visual and well defined , which is very important.
  • The title summarises the topic  of the essay. Another option is to use the question ( What can people do to help protect the environment? ) as title. However, it usually tends to be too long, so I prefer to summarise it into a shorter heading.
  • Introduction: it introduces the topic in a general way and it leads to the second paragraph (first idea).
  • Paragraph 2: it deals with idea 1.
  • Paragraph 3: it deals with idea 2.
  • Paragraph 4: it deals with idea 3.
  • Conclusion: we express our opinion to conclude and summarise the essay.
  • It uses connectors to define the development of the essay:  firstly, second, finally, etc.
  • It doesn’t use many contractions or pet words.
  • One of the things that

  • For this reason,
  • First, / Second, / Third,
  • By doing so,
  • For example,
  • In conclusion,

This is a good example of an essay for FCE Writing . By the way, you must bear in mind that it has been written to simulate a strong B2 level, without reaching C1.

FAQ: Do I get penalised for writing over 190 words?

This is the most typical question in this part of the exam and the answer is « yes and no «. Let me explain myself. Cambridge English examiners don’t count the number of words and penalise you based upon that fact alone. There’s a rumour going around among teachers and pupils that says that for every 10 words over 190, they take «this many» points off, but it is not true. However, think about this: if you’ve written 50 or 100 words more than asked, you are probably including irrelevant information to the task , right? Now that’s a reason for losing points. In the same way that if you  write under 140 words you are probably missing essential information , don’t you think?

For this reason, I always recommend writing up to 10 or 20 words over the limit. In this way, you won’t lose any points for including irrelevant information.

The essay is a compulsory task to be completed in Part 1 of the writing section in the Cambridge B2 First (FCE) that is written to convince someone of something or to simply inform the reader about a particular topic.

There is no single, method of successful writing essay. However, this article will outline how to write an excellent essay   in the B2 First (FCE) exam by putting into practice some simple, but invaluable, tips.

You will learn how to write an essay, an example of essay structure , guidance , sample topics , model answers , useful tips , frequently asked questions and useful phrases and expressions.

An essay can be organised in different ways, but it is useful to write one idea in one paragraph and add a short introduction and conclusion .

It is always an essay written for your teacher, and the start of the question wording is always the same:

Before you start writing your essay at B2 First exam you need to ask three questions:

What is the topic of the essay?

If you look at our example task you will notice that we are going to write about society .

In your English class, you have been talking about society . Write an essay using all the notes and giving reasons for your point of view.

Knowing this, you can quickly prepare in your head all the words that you associate with this topic or even write them down.

What exactly do I have to include in my essay?

As you can see there are three points included in the task there are two that are already given in our example

Write about: 1. Taxes 2. Opportunity 3. …………………… ( your own idea) <= you have to come up with this one yourself 

The first point is taxes , the second is opportunity , and the third one is something you must come up with yourself!

We decided that the third point we would comment on would be economics

Who is going to read my essay?

In the FCE essay, it’s always your English teacher.  It means that you need to write with respect because she is a person with authority, therefore essay has to be written in a formal style.

What is formal style?

Formal language is professional and serious rather than relaxed and friendly and is used especially in official situations. It is usually reserved for essays and academic settings, while informal writing is used for more casual settings, like friendly text messages and creative writing.

Below are listed the biggest differences between formal and informal writing styles:

Contractions

It is advised to avoid contractions (shortened versions of words) in formal language, but they’re acceptable in informal language.

Unfortunately, the team couldn’t replicate the results. (Informal)

Colloquial Phrases/Slang

Formal language is also marked by an absence of colloquial phrases and slang (words or phrases that are common only in everyday speech), but are typically used in informal language.

Everyone was disappointed . (Formal)

Everyone was bummed . (Informal)

First-Person Pronouns

Generally, first-person pronouns (like I and we ) are avoided when writing with formal language . However, it’s accepted (and expected) in informal language.

The students were asked to fill out the questionnaire. (Formal) We asked the students to fill out the questionnaire. (Informal)

Phrasal Verbs

When using formal language in your B2 writing, it is also recommended to replace phrasal verbs (proper verbs that are followed by one or more prepositions and act as a single verb).

It was something the protestors could endure . (Formal) It was something the protestors could put up with . (Informal)

Vocabulary Choice

Formal language tends to use longer, more complex vocabulary. Sometimes it is not recommended to use this type of vocabulary with informal language (depending on what you’re writing) because it can confuse or distract your audience.

They needed assistance while recovering from the outcomes of the hurricane. (Formal) They needed help while recovering from the effects of the hurricane. (Informal)

Step 2: Write an introduction

The purpose of the introduction is simply to tell the reader what the essay is about.

You can start your essay by referring to the question that was asked “ University should be free for everyone. Do you agree or disagree? ” and writing it in your own words . It is also worth mentioning the three points you are going to describe.

Introduction : There are many factors to consider when deciding if the university should be free or not. Among these are taxes, equality of opportunity, and the economy. 

You can use phrases such as:

This essay will discuss … This essay will focus on … In order to discuss …, I will analyse …

Step 3: Main body paragraphs… 

Main body paragraphs are the most important part of your essay so they should be the longest and one paragraph should comment on one point. See below:

Write about: 1. Taxes – the first paragraph should comment on “ taxes”  2. Opportunity – the second paragraph should comment on “ opportunity “ 3. …………………… (your own idea) – the third paragraph should comment on “economy”

In addition, every paragraph should start with a topic sentence, which is like an introduction to the paragraph and it tells the reader what exactly the paragraph is going to discuss.

Also, a good idea is to include different linking words/expressions to make sure that your ideas are well connected and in a logical order.

What is a topic sentence?

A topic sentence is the first sentence of a paragraph (which is also the most important )

A topic sentence essentially tells readers about the rest of the paragraph . If the topic sentence says “ Cats are very good pets for several reasons” , then every sentence after that needs to describe that subject.

For example:

Cats are very good pets for several reasons . (<=topic sentence / every sentence after it describes that subject =>) They are naturally good caregivers because they take care of their kittens, so they want to take care of their owners as well. Cats are quite clean, and if you train them to use a litter box, they require almost no cleanup in their areas.

What are the linking words/expressions?

These are words and expressions that help the text flow logically . These words act as signposts, helping the reader easily move from one idea to the next and see connections between sentences or paragraphs.

Linking words is especially useful when you want to indicate that you are going to explain something, provide an example use a time sequence, or present a contrasting point of view.

Between paragraphs:

To begin with, I would like to put forward […] The first possible action is, to improve physical education …[…] A second option would be. …  competitive attitudes that […]

Within a paragraph:

[…] which activity is better than the others. Another reason for not financing sports […]

Remember, you don’t have to tell the truth! The examiners won’t know, so if you don’t have experience or an opinion you can make something up!

Step 4: Conclusion 

The conclusion comes at the end of your essay, it summarizes the main idea of the essay.  You need to write a clear, justified conclusion. You can’t just say, ‘I agree’, or ‘I disagree.’ Think of it like this: you need to convince the examiner that your conclusion is correct.

In conclusion, a university should be free for everyone. It makes economic sense and ultimately benefits all members of society.

DEVELOPMENT VS ENVIRONMENT

If we surf the web looking for pollution and environmental catastrophes, we will find out that every country in the world suffers them. This is a natural consequence of the struggle between development and environment.

If a country decided to live isolated from the rest of the world, living on what it can naturally grow and produce, it surely wouldn’t be highly polluted. But we all want exotic food and technological items from all over the world, so we have to pay the price.

Investing on electrical transport would benefit the environment a lot. Even more if this electricity came from a natural source of energy like wind, rivers and solar boards. It’s difficult to achieve this because petrol companies will fight against these actions.

We also have to take care of our rivers and seas. We all have heard about factories throwing highly toxic substances to rivers, without minimizing their poisoning effects. A really strict law should be applied to fine these factories and make them change their policy.

But what about ourselves? We also can do a lot! If, when possible, we bought larger packs of food, we would be producing less rubbish. And this is only an example!

The society we live today is characterised by technology in constant development, fast speed processes, information travelling and getting to people at a blink of an eye and a complex web of social networking. In this context, the fashion industry is becoming increasingly important and having a more and more paramount role in our lives.

On one hand, the fashion industry is undeniably a source of profit and income. It hires millions of people all over the world and generates millions of dollars every year. Furthermore, such profitable business is also believed to be able to spread and make known the culture of a people, encouraging and enhancing a better understanding of each other.

Nevertheless, for those who are neither impressed nor motivated by numbers and figures, the fashion industry is seen as one which segregates people, isolating those who not fit their laws and commands. It is stated that people place too much importance on appearance and the material, world, sadly true, and the fashion industry just spurs on such situation. Moreover, not only are the costs of fashion item unrealistically high, it is thought to be a money better spent on more pressing issues, such as poverty and hunger.

I do believe that the fashion industry, as it is today, has a harmful effect, because it values a minority of people in detriment to the majority. However, it has such a wide reach that, it put into a good use, it can save lives.

B2 First (FCE) Essay: FAQ

How long should a b2 essay be.

You need to answer the question with between 140-190 words. 

If an answer is too long, you may get a lower score.   If you write 200 words, it’s not a problem. However, if you write 300 words, it’s a problem.

Should you do a plan?

Yes! You must make a plan to organise your essay writing . On the day of the exam, you will be stressed and feel pressure. A plan is your way of organising you text and your thoughts.

What happens if I write more than 190 words?

Nothing… Well, almost nothing. In the past for every 5 words extra, they took away a point, however, now they do not. It is not good to go over 190 words because of time, but you can. I wouldn´t write more than 200 words because they will probably lower the mark they give you for content. They will determine some of it to be unnecessary.

What counts as a complex language in the exam?

You MUST use complex language at B2 level . You must use attention-grabbing vocabulary and a variety of grammar structures. The passive voice, relative clauses, modal verbs, conditionals, reported speech and inversions all count as COMPLEX grammar forms and you must use them. Otherwise, you can address academic experts and pay someone to write your paper if you need help to write an essay for you.

First, you need to read the FCE writing essay task and identify exactly what needs to be included.

Let’s look at a sample question:

You’ve recently had a discussion in English class about society. Now your teacher has asked you to write an essay. Write an essay using all the notes and give reasons for your point of view.

University should be free for everyone. Do you agree or disagree? Notes 1. Taxes 2. Opportunity 3. Your own idea

So, what do you need to do? Most importantly, you need to say if you agree or disagree that university should be free for everyone.

You also need to use all the notes and give reasons for your point of view. That means your essay needs to include three central ideas: taxes, opportunity, and one other.

It also means that you need to reach a clear, justified conclusion. You can’t just say, ‘I agree’, or ‘I disagree.’ Think of it like this: you need to convince the examiner that your conclusion is correct.

You might think at this point, ‘yeah, obvious, thanks for the help, Kasia!’ Trust me; it’s harder than it sounds. Many FCE essays that we see don’t get these basic things right. It’s very easy to leave something out, or to go in the wrong direction.

Next, you’re writing this answer for your teacher so what style do you think it will be in? Formal or informal?

An essay should be formal. What does that mean?

Formal writing doesn’t use contractions, like ‘I’d’, ‘you’re’ or ‘don’t’. Write the full forms. You should also avoid using slang, colloquial vocabulary, or anything which sounds very conversational.

Next, think: what do you need to include?

You need to talk about taxes, opportunity, and you also need to add your own idea.

Even the ideas which are given to you—taxes and opportunity—are quite vague. That means you need to decide exactly what to talk about.

You also need to think about how to connect your ideas.

For example, with taxes you could say that if you pay taxes, then this should go back into society to benefit everyone. You could add to this by pointing out that having equal opportunities also benefits society. And for your own idea, you could talk about how people with higher education are more likely to be economically productive.

This is just one example, of course! There are many paths you could take.

Let’s talk about that in more detail.

2. How to Plan Your FCE Writing

Here’s what you need to do when you plan your writing for the FCE writing essay.

First, you need to decide what your conclusion is going to be. Are you going to agree or disagree that university should be free for everyone?

Decide your conclusion first, because everything else in your essay needs to lead to it.

Secondly, you need to plan how many paragraphs you’re going to have, and what you’ll put in each one.

Thirdly, you need to make sure your paragraphs are connected to your conclusion.

Let’s see an example:

  • Taxes – parents pay taxes so children should get education. Children will pay taxes in the future.
  • Opportunity – education creates more equal society. Higher standard of living for everyone.
  • Economy – educated workforce helps the economy grow.
  • Conc. – agree with statement

Pause the video if you want some more time to read the plan.

You can see that we use the key idea of ‘education’ in the notes for each paragraph. Doing this can help you to stay focused and on-topic, because you’re connecting each paragraph back to the main idea of the question.

When you plan, make sure that each paragraph has a clear focus.

Every good paragraph starts with a topic sentence, which summarises the main point of the paragraph.

The sentences which follow are called supporting sentences. These include reasons and examples to support your topic sentence.

A good exercise during planning is to take a paragraph and think to yourself: “What’s this paragraph about?”

If you can answer that question in one simple sentence, then that’s a good sign. Hopefully, your plan is clear. However, if you can’t answer that question, that shows that your plan isn’t totally clear in your head.

Once you’ve finished your plan, you’re ready to write your answer!

3. How to Write Your Answer

In your candidate answer book, you will now write your essay.

Let’s look at a model answer:

  • There are many factors to consider when deciding if the university should be free or not. Among these are taxes, equality of opportunity, and the economy.
  • Firstly, a proportion of taxes should go to education. Some might say if you can afford university, then you should pay for it. But, this doesn’t take into account the fact that higher earners pay higher income tax so they are already contributing more.
  • Secondly, by making university free for all, it creates more opportunitys for those from low-income backgrounds. Although they may still have difficulty meeting other costs such as accommodation it makes the playing field more level.
  • In addition, having an educated workforce is proven to help the economy grow. The more people with degrees there are, the higher the standard of living for everyone. So, more people will be able to pay taxes to fund the education of future generations.
  • In conclusion, free university ultimately benefits all members of society.

Pause the video to read, and start again when you’re ready.

First question: have we answered the question?

Yes: the conclusion states that ‘free university benefits all members of society.’ This shows that we agree that university should be free for everyone.

Next: have we used topic sentences?

Yes, we have. The first sentence of the essay tells you what the entire essay will be about.

Then, each paragraph’s topic sentence contains a key word from our plan. We have ‘taxes,’ ‘opportunities’ and ‘economy’.

Also, the topic sentences and paragraphs all reference the idea of ‘education’, either directly or indirectly. This shows that our points are relevant and connected to the task.

So, now you’re finished, right? No–there’s one more step. This answer is not bad, but it could be better.

4. How to Check and Improve Your Answer

The final step is to check your answer.

What type of things do you think you should look for?

Grammar, of course, but what else?

Check for spelling mistakes. Check for style—have you used any conversational language which doesn’t fit the tone of an essay like this?

Check your use of linking words and phrases. Many students overuse them; don’t use a linking word like nevertheless unless you’re sure it fits.

Check for repetition of vocabulary. Could you replace any simple vocabulary with something more advanced?

Look at our model answer again:

  • There are many factors to consider when deciding if the university should be free or not. Among these are taxes, equality of opportunity and the economy.
  • Secondly, by making university free for all, it creates more opportunitys for those from low-income backgrounds. Although they may still have difficulty meeting other costs such as accommodation * it makes the playing field more level.

The bold words are either mistakes, or they could be improved somehow.

How would you improve this? Pause the video while you read and decide.

The first problem is with grammar. Unless you’re talking about one specific university, you don’t use the.

Okay, what’s wrong with doesn’t? We’ve used a contraction! Don’t use contractions in your essay. So, it should be does not.

The next problem is a spelling mistake. When a word ends in ‘y’, it changes to ‘ies’ in the plural: opportunities .

Next is a punctuation mistake. There’s a comma missing. There are two clauses in this sentence and they need to be separated by a comma.

There’s nothing wrong with people with degrees but it’s quite basic. What else could you say?

You could say educated people, or even highly-educated people, either of which is slightly more elegant.

So is not a mistake, but we used so in the second paragraph already. You want to show the examiner your range of language, so here you could use something more precise like consequently.

Our conclusion is only one sentence, so let’s add an extra point. We’re still under the maximum word count. This could help us to state our opinion more clearly.

Let’s change it to:

  • In conclusion, free university should be free for everyone. It makes economic sense and ultimately benefits all members of society.

Here’s the final version of our essay:

  • There are many factors to consider when deciding if university should be free or not. Among these are taxes, equality of opportunity, and the economy.
  • Firstly, a proportion of taxes should go to education. Some might say if you can afford university, then you should pay for it. But, this does not take into account the fact that higher earners pay higher income tax so they are already contributing more.
  • Secondly, by making university free for all, it creates more opportunities for those from low-income backgrounds. Although they may still have difficulty meeting other costs such as accommodation, it makes the playing field more level.
  • In addition, having an educated workforce is proven to help the economy grow. The more highly-educated people there are, the higher the standard of living for everyone. Consequently, more people will be able to pay taxes to fund the education of future generations.

At this point, it’s looking good! Next, let’s focus on what you can do to produce a good FCE writing essay which will get a high score in your exam.

5. How to Improve Your Score

Your essay score is made up of four parts. For each part, you get a score from zero to five.

  • Content – how well the candidate has fulfilled the task
  • Communicative Achievement – how appropriate the writing is for the task
  • Organisation – how well the writing is put together
  • Language – focuses on vocabulary and grammar

First there’s Content . The mark scheme says this “focuses on how well you have fulfilled the task”. In other words, have you done everything you were asked to do?

This corresponds to step one of our writing process. Analyse the task carefully and make sure you do everything it asks you to. A good tip is to underline the key words in the task to help you identify what you need to do.

Next there’s Communicative Achievement . This “focuses on how appropriate your writing is for the task”.

Have you used the correct register? Have you used contractions? Basically: does your essay look and sound like an essay?

Then we have Organisation . This looks at “how the writing is put together”. Is it logical and organised? By planning your writing carefully, it will already be organised. Remember to plan your paragraphs carefully and write a clear topic sentence at the beginning of each paragraph.

You can also use linking words and phrases to make the connections between paragraphs even clearer.

In our essay, we used many linking words, including firstly, secondly, in addition, although, consequently and in conclusion. Look through the essay again, and note how the linking words and phrases are used. Can you find any more examples of linking words in the essay?

Finally, you have Language : vocabulary and grammar. The examiners will be looking for a range of language as well as how accurate it is. In step four, you saw how checking your essay can improve your language.

Are you worried that making mistakes will affect your mark? Of course, making a lot of mistakes will lower your mark, but remember this is only one part of your score.

For B2 level, the Cambridge mark scheme says, ‘Occasional errors may be present but do not impede communication.’ That means you can still score 5 from 5, even with some small mistakes.

But, hopefully, you’ll catch most of them when you’re on step four – checking and improving your answer.

You’ve seen how to write an essay for FCE, but you can use the same process for other Cambridge exams, including the CAE and CPE when you get that far.

Students take language certifications like the Cambridge B2 First qualification for lots of different reasons. You might do it to motivate yourself to improve your language abilities, to prove your level of English to an employer, or even to achieve an ambition like travelling around the world and going to live in an English-speaking country.

The Cambridge B2 First exam includes a two-part writing section, which can be daunting for some people. So if you’re thinking about taking an exam like this, we have some top tips to help you write an excellent exam essay.

Most of the advice in this article can also be applied to any exam where you have to write an essay, such as the C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency or IELTS .

Writing test structure

Before we get into the details, let’s take a look at the structure of the writing paper. You have 80 minutes to write two texts – and it will go quickly!

The first part is the essay; the second part is an article, email, letter, report, or review.

You will be given the essay title and two ideas or prompts . It’s essential that you include both of these ideas in your essay, as well as another relevant idea that you have to come up with yourself .

You have to write 140-190 words in each part and it shouldn’t take you more than 40 minutes per answer .

Take a look at this example from a sample paper and then think about how you would answer it in an exam:

Some parents teach their children at home rather than sending them to school. Is this a good or a bad thing for the children?

  • 1. having a parent as a teacher
  • 2. making friends
  • 3. …..

What could the third idea be? Stop reading, grab a pen and write down some ideas! Keep them general, but relevant. When you’ve finished, scroll down to the bottom of the page to see some of our ideas * .

Step One: plan it (10 minutes)

That’s what my old history teacher used to tell me. I hate to admit it, but he was right! If you don’t usually plan before you start writing, you really need to get into the habit . Ten minutes may seem a lot, but the more time you spend planning, the clearer your ideas will be and the quicker the writing process will be.

A good place to start is to brainstorm keywords and phrases related to the topic.

Next, you should think about how you’re going to begin ( the introduction ), how you’re going to connect the three main ideas ( the body ) and how you’re going to finish ( the conclusion ). If you know where you’re headed , you’re much less likely to get lost along the way!

Step Two: write it (25 minutes)

OK, you’ve got our plan – you’re good to go ! It’s important to know what the examiners are looking for. The mark you get for the essay is based on the following four aspects :

Content: Have you included all three ideas? Remember, all content should be 100% relevant to the topic, so don’t go off on a tangent !

Communicative achievement: Is the style or tone of your essay appropriate? It should be neutral and quite formal, so avoid contractions (e.g. it’s, don’t, they’ll) and first person pronouns (e.g. I, me, my, we, us, our).

Organisation: Does your essay follow a logical order? To help your writing flow , try to include linking words. Here’s a website with some examples.

Language: Have you used a variety of vocabulary and grammatical structures? Don’t always write the first word that comes to mind – look for synonyms . Using some complex structures (e.g. different verb tenses, passives, inversion) will boost your marks, but be sure to use them correctly!

Step Three: check it (5 minutes)

This final step is essential. It’s your chance to read (and re-read) your essay to identify any mistakes. No matter how careful you’ve been, there are probably a few things that you can improve. Check for spellings. Check for plurals. Check for verb agreement . Basically, check everything!

5 quick tips to improve your proofreading

  • Keep a list of (your) frequent mistakes, so you know what to look out for
  • Read it slowly
  • Use your finger to guide your eyes
  • Correct one thing at a time (e.g. only punctuation, then only spelling)
  • Focus on the little words (pronouns, articles, prepositions, etc.)

Writing an essay about the environment- Recomendaciones

 recomendaciones para la producción escrita de exámenes de inglés.

Esta publicación es útil para personas que estén estudiando inglés de nivel intermedio-avanzado y tengan que preparar, por ejemplo:

  • para el traductorado en inglés,
  • profesorado en inglés,
  • o una licenciatura en Lengua Inglesa
  • un ensayo de Lengua Inglesa en el nivel superior,
  • o el Cambridge First.

En el video vas a poder ver una corrección de un essay de nivel B2 que me mandó una aspirante al lenguas Vivas (de forma anónima). La idea es que todos, incluso los que estudian por su cuenta y no puedan pagar una profe particular, puedan prepararse de la mejor manera.

Mi prioridad es el trabajo por el cual recibo ingresos, entonces por ahí tardo bastante en corregirlos y subirlos a Youtube. Por ejemplo, este ensayo me lo enviaron en julio y recién este finde pude ponerme a corregirlo. Pero por ahí consigo tiempo libre y lo corrijo en la misma semana, así que no dudes en enviármelo 🙂

In the last decades, we have been polluting way too much, and this has had a negative impact on the earth. Rivers and seas have been suffering with plastic waste pollution, affecting marine lives, or even the climate change is proving its destructive power. For this reason we must protect the environment and we can start helping from our houses. First, we have to start paying attention to reduce, reuse, and recycle. It is a simple step and by doing so, we will educate ourselves and we will take the responsibility to reduce the amount of rubbish we throw everyday. We will learn something new and little by little this would become something essential in our life. Second, if we commute, we always can do it on foot or by bike. This is also part of changing our daily life, and besides helping to reduce the transport pollution, we are choosing a healthier action for our body. However, there are some places we cannot go without taking the bus or by car, therefore, several companies bet for electric cars which are more eco-friendly. Finally, if we really want to change the things, we should teach children about the dangers of pollution, and being an example as adults. It is not only tell them about it and wait until they learn alone, but to show them how to do things right. In conclusion, contamination have been a normalized problem and few people have been trying to solve it, even though it is simple to take part of this change. It does not take too much time for us and we can start step by step. I believe we can do it.

Tener siempre presente el objetivo del texto:

¿Quiere persuadir? ¿Persuadir sobre qué?

Las diferencias pueden ser pequeñas, pero siguen siendo importantes.

No es lo mismo persuadir a que la gente tome acciones para salvar al medio ambiente que persuadir a la gente de que sí se puede salvar el medio ambiente a través de diversas acciones.

Fijarse el tema central y los subtemas del ensayo.

  • El tema central debería plantearse en la introducción y resolverse en la conclusión .
  • No mencionar algo en la introducción que luego no se desarrolle, como tampoco mencionar algo en la conclusión que no se haya desarrollado.
  • Los subtemas deberían tratarse en el los distintos párrafos del desarrollo .
  • Cada párrafo debería tener una idea central , junto con ejemplos y argumentos que respalden.

Escribir una cantidad de palabras dentro del rango de la consigna.

Una vez que sabés de qué vas a hablar y dónde (en qué párrafos), podés hacer un cálculo de cuántas palabras debería tener cada sección.

Revisar el vocabulario y la gramática.

  • “way too much” es way too much informal.
  • Usar conectores de oraciones y párrafos variados de forma natural y precisa.
  • suffer FROM

  • be part OF something
  • zero article
  • indefinite article
  • definite article
  • Si tu texto tiene palabras como and , or , o but , fijate que de los dos lados tenga estructuras equivalentes.
  • Si tenés un sustantivo, fijate si es singular o plural.

When people say that ‘a problem shared is a problem halved,’ they mean that it is good to talk about your issues with someone else. While this may be true, there can also be disadvantages to looking for help in this way.

The first advantage of talking to a friend about a personal problem is that you will gain sympathy and support from someone who cares about you. No one can deny that it is very helpful to have someone who listens to you and shows concern. Even if your friend can’t offer practical advice, it will still make you feel better. It is also true that talking through a problem can help you come to a solution yourself.

So are there any disadvantages in confiding in friends in this way? Although it is true that it is helpful to share your problems with a friend, we should also remember that it is not a good idea to talk about your personal problems to everybody, or it can easily become gossip. It is important to pick one good friend that you can trust to keep your problem to themselves. Moreover, not everybody is kind, so you can end up feeling worse, unless you choose your friend wisely.

To sum up, talking about your problems to a friend is a very beneficial thing to do, provided that you pick the right person. A good friend is one you can trust.

Cómo hacer un report B2 First (FCE): guía con ejemplo paso a paso

Como tal vez ya sabes, tu examen Cambridge B2 (antiguo FCE) tiene dos partes: en la primera debes escribir un essay ; en la segunda debes elegir una de tres tareas: estas pueden ser un article, un email o letter, una review o un report. En esta entrada vamos a escribir paso a paso un ejemplo de   report B2 de Cambridge .

Esta entrada también te interesa si quieres aprender cómo escribir el report B2 de la EOI (Escuela de Idiomas) o del Trinity ISE II (B2): en ambos puede caer este tipo de escrito.

En esta entrada encontrarás

La extensión de tu report cambridge b2 first (fce) y el tiempo que te dan para escribir.

En primer lugar, para escribir nuestro ejemplo de report B2 Cambridge debemos tener en cuenta su extensión (140 -190 palabras) y el tiempo del que vamos a disponer para escribirlo (80 minutos para las dos tareas del writing, con lo cual tienes 40 minutos para tu report) .

Ahora bien, ¿te penalizan por exceder las 190 palabras? No, de ninguna manera. No obstante, cuando sobrepasas ese límite por un margen amplio, inevitablemente terminas escribiendo sobre cosas que no son relevantes para la tarea, y eso sí lo penalizan. Por otro lado, si te enrollas demasiado, el tiempo no te alcanzará. Los diseñadores de la prueba lo tienen todo muy bien calculado.

Pasos para escribir este ejemplo de report del Cambridge B2 First (FCE)

Una vez sé el tiempo y la extensión de los que dispongo, surgen las dudas: ¿cómo empezar mi report ?, ¿qué frases debo usar?, ¿tono formal o informal? Vamos a escribir un ejemplo de report B2 paso a paso para responder a estas y otras preguntas.

Paso 1: lee bien el enunciado

Parece una obviedad, pero muchos candidatos pierden puntos por no leer bien el enunciado de la tarea. Así que, antes que nada, tómate el tiempo para leerlo y entenderlo antes de escribir tu report B2. Vamos a ver este ejemplo del libro de Cambridge English First 1 :

El siguiente paso es elegir la attraction sobre la que quieres escribir. No te lo pienses demasiado: te recuerdo que tienes 40 minutos y no deberías tardar más de 5-7 minutos en planificar. Por lo tanto, da igual que no conozcas bien la attraction (tu fidelidad a la verdad no será evaluada): podrás inventarte algún dato si no lo recuerdas de memoria.

Paso 2: responde a las preguntas del enunciado

El siguiente paso para escribir este ejemplo de report B2 es responder a las preguntas que te han hecho. Importante: en este paso no te fijes en errores gramaticales o léxicos, ortografía o conectores. Esto te hará dudar y perder tiempo corrigiendo frases que igual tendrás que cambiar en los pasos 4 y 5, duplicando el trabajo innecesariamente. Ahora céntrate en tener las ideas en orden.

Aquí tienes mi esquema (outline) en el que respondo a las preguntas del enunciado:

Si, ya sé que has pillado un error de vocabulario. ¿Pero qué te he dicho? Que no te fijes en los errores; ya nos ocuparemos de ellos en el paso 5. Tú adelante.

Paso 3: desarrollar y dar formato a tu report B2

A continuación, debes redactar tu report a partir del esquema anterior. Para ello, simplemente convierte cada respuesta a las preguntas del enunciado en un párrafo. Después, añade un párrafo más para la introducción (en la que escribes el propósito del report) y otro para la conclusión (que en este caso será una o dos frases que resuman lo que has dicho anteriormente). 

Por último, escribe un encabezado para cada párrafo.

Si, ya sé que hay unos cuantos errores. Pero insisto: no te preocupes por ellos. Simplemente controla que

  • cada párrafo responda a una pregunta;
  • no repites información (mira lo que he tachado) ;
  • tengas una introducción y una conclusión;
  • haya encabezados.

Paso 4: dar cohesión

El siguiente paso es dar cohesión a tu escrito. Para ello: 

  • Emplea conectores;
  • haz cambios en la estructura de tus oraciones;
  • incluye algunas de las estructuras gramaticales que se esperan de un B2.

En mi ejemplo de report Cambridge B2 First (FCE), estos cambios están marcados en negrita:

Paso 5: corregir y pulir tu report

Por últmo, debes dejar unos cinco minutos para pulir tu report. Que es lo que voy a hacer en mi ejemplo de report para que no te sangren más los ojos con mis errores. (Las correcciones están marcadas en rojo) :

Fíjate en las cosas que he corregido:

  • a Gothic construction from the 12th century (no from the 12 century)
  • temporary exhibitions (no temporal expositions)
  • … will enjoy discovering (no enjoy to discover)

¿Registro formal o informal en el report del Cambridge B2 First (FCE)?

Pero antes de terminar, te fijarás en que he hecho otros cambios (en azul): estos no se deben a errores sino a la necesidad de demostrar que domino el registro, la gramática y el léxico apropiados para mi report Cambridge B2 First (FCE) :

Al igual que los informes de la vida real, el report de tu examen es un escrito destinado a un superior jerárquico: el director de tu academia de inglés, la oficina de turismo local, tu profesor o profesora, etc. Por ello, el tono debe ser formal.

Estos cambios (menos el primero) son clave para dar ese tono formal a tu report.

Y que sigas estos pasos:

  • Lee bien las preguntas.
  • Responde cada pregunta en un párrafo.
  • Formato: cada párrafo es una sección de tu report y debe ir con un encabezado.
  • Para dar cohesión, haz cambios en la estructura oracional y añade conectores.
  • Corrige errores gramaticales y léxicos.

Tu observación es muy pertinente: parecería que debiera ser ‘worth admiring is the cloister’, pero fíjate que es ‘the cloister and its temporary and permanent exhibitions’, con lo que tenemos tres cosas worth admiring: el claustro, las exposiciones temporales y las permanentes; por lo tanto, debemos usar el plural. Te felicito porque este es un desliz que podría cometer cualquier nativo, sea en inglés o en español. O sea que entiendes el texto lo bastante bien para entrar en estos detalles. Congrats!

Si me pidieran hacer recomendaciones , en lugar de conclusión pongo recomendaciones o acaso se tendría que poner recomendaciones y luego otro titulo con la conclusión?

Si el objetivo del report es hacer recomendaciones, estas van en el cuerpo del escrito. En caso de que las recomendaciones sean el resultado del análisis de una determinada situación, estas son parte de la conclusión. La clave está en leer bien las instrucciones y tener en cuenta la extensión que debe tener tu escrito.

Seguimos trabajando los writings de los seguidores de la Web del Inglés y vamos ampliando nuestra sección de Corrección de Writings. Esta vez volvemos a trabajar un writing de Javier, al cual le vuelvo a dar las gracias por querer compartir su conocimiento y aprendizaje con todos los demás seguidores de la web, MUCHÍSIMAS GRACIAS!

Javier me pedía que le corrigiera este writing, que es para el examen First Certificate de Cambridge, que os recuerdo que es un nivel B2, según el Marco Común de Referencia Europeo.

Las notas rojas, si están tachadas es porque son errores, y cuando no lo están, es algo que se debería haber puesto y no estaba. Las notas azules, en cambio, son aspectos positivos para nivel B2. Venga, empezamos!

Se trata de un essay sobre environment. Las instrucciones del writing son las siguientes:

In your English class you have been talking about the environment. Now your English teacher has asked you to write an essay. Every country in the world has problems with pollution and damage to the environment. Do you think these problems can be solved?

1.Transport

2.Rivers and seas

3.Your own idea.

In current society, not only countries are countries being affected by economic issues, but also the vast majority of them are also involved in many trouble s such as global warming, the greenhouse effect or air pollution. Even though governments are strongly striving for to deal ing with these sorts of problems, they are not being able to make reach an agreement to overcome it as everyone has expected .

In regard to the solutions, countries ought to come up with ideas against private transport with the purpose of significantly cutting down significantly the amount of fumes given off by cars. Besides , although every day more and more electric cars are being placed on the market in order to reduce gases, we are not still aware of the problem caused by pollution to ourselves and the environment as we are stuck in our traditional ways of living.

Moreover , some people think we should keep an eye on rivers and seas around the world with the aim of cleaning them up as quickly as possible. From my point of view, many companies dump litter every single day into rivers every single day so they are destroying our ecosystem and this is the main reason why we have to be capable of quitting these actions for the sake of next generations.

In a nutshell, I ´d rather think that we truly could solve the problem providing kids and youngsters with a better education about the this issue, and surprisingly enough , the best way to learn would be teaching by example without any doubt.

  • El writing está muy bien para un nivel B2, tanto en cuestión gramatical como en vocabulario.
  • Aspectos a mejorar :

  • Trouble es un sustantivo incontable en inglés, por tanto, no puede llevar s de plural ni tampoco many (es para contable).
  • The greenhouse effect lleva artículo the, porque es específico.
  • Strive va seguido de for cuando tenemos detrás un sustantivo, pero de to infinitivo si tenemos un verbo.
  • Sort y kind van en plural cuando delante ponemos these, tiene que haber concordancia entre estas dos palabras y el artículo, por tanto, these sorts y these kinds.
  • Llegar a un acuerdo = reach an agreement
  • More and more = cada vez/cada día más = no hace falta poner every day.
  • The environment = lleva artículo the = es específico (sólo hay uno)
  • Dump litter into a place = preposición into = la preposición into se utiliza cuando es dentro, como in, pero siempre que haya movimiento. En este caso, el verbo dump implica movimiento.
  • Provide somebody with something = necesitamos la preposición with, aunque en español no la utilicemos.

‘d rather + infinitive without to

Preposition + verb in ing

Have to + infinitive

Would be = conditional
