According to CBSE, while assigning and preparing homework for the students, it is important to note they are able to develop the skills like relating, thinking, concluding, inferring. Homework should be such that the student neither feel it burdensome nor they lose interest in the subject matter. Moreover it is useful in providing them a happy experience. Homework therefore needs to be thought about and worked upon differently. Emphasis should be given on Vedic mathematics, designing quality homework rather than its quantity. Download NCERT Books and apps based on latest CBSE Syllabus.

Encompassing the aforesaid ideas, the CBSE has brought forth a Manual, “Alternatives to Holiday Homework” for classes VI to VIII. It is collection of ideas transformed into suggestive activities that are creative, interesting, meaningful and interactive, enhancing various skills, directly or indirectly related to subject matter providing students to enhance their learning and gaining knowledge based on NCERT Books following the latest CBSE Syllabus.

  • Holiday Homework for Class 8 Science
  • Holiday Homework for Class 8 Social Science

A well rounded development of individual knowledge happens not only from textbooks and formal education but more from the learner’s personal experiences, individual inquisitive nature and social surroundings. Homework is an area of importance and to make it more relevant for the NCERT Books classes 6th, 7th and 8th, appropriate strategies and meaningful activities may be suggested to the schools that give more time to child to explore the environment to develop creative thinking.

These activities (like OTBA for class 9 & 11 ) would be so framed that they keep the child interested in subjects and therefore would also help in enhancing the learning power. Homework is one of the areas that need urgent attention. As the students of class VI, VII and VIII develop a certain learning style and want to know and find more and more. Efforts should be made to make homework more creative and interesting so that the students do not feel burdensome while doing the same and the ultimate purpose of providing homework is served.

A survey was conducted through questionnaire prepared by CBSE to collect feedback from parents, teachers, students and other educationists on “Alternatives to Homework at Upper Primary Level” for Class Sixth, Seventh and Eighth so that appropriate strategies and meaningful activities can be designed and suggested to schools. The questions were directed to know the ideal quantity and purpose of the homework, whether homework should be assigned in all the subjects, internet usage should be a part of the homework or not, how homework helps in teaching.

Keeping in view emerging issues, there is a need to think about giving quality homework emphasizing on acquiring applied learning skills. Few points can be kept in mind while designing a quality homework by teachers: 1, Provide students capacity building activities which are followed up and acknowledged like drawing, creative writing, making puzzles, stories, plays, online games, reading online books and craft.

2. Provide them assignment sheets which improve their reading & writing abilities. Homework must enable the student to practice a skill independently. 3. A possible discussion can be held with different children on what they would like to do at home to improve in which ever area they deem necessary. Homework must be designed in a way that maximizes the chances of its completion by the students.

4. Parents should be able to understand the child’s needs and schools suggestions on how to learn mathematics, logical reasoning, etc. by doing puzzles, writing letters, reading to elders from the newspapers, making household lists, recipe making and cooking. 5. Learners who have dyslexia or number difficulty should have practice assignments overcoming their problems.

The child in middle school have a keenness to discover more and prepare for the examination. Learning is about developing new faculties, which become useful as an adult. The years 12 to 15 are years when rules become important, and doing well, excelling are given importance both at home and in the class. As the child grows chronically his/her emotional maturity also grows and there are interests which are beyond just what lessons can give.

The homework assigned should: 1. enhance study habits and practice skills (which learners are able to perform independently) 2. reinforce necessary skills both scholastic and co-scholastic among the learners. 3. enable learners to become independent learners and thinkers and develop among them 21st century skills so that they can participate in Make in India in future. 4. lead to the improvement in the academic achievement of the learner.

5. expand on the existing knowledge of the learners and be a part of the already acquired competencies in the classroom. 6. not put unneeded pressure or stress by including new learning material or difficult material to be worked upon by learners themselves. 7. be CBSE Syllabus based and as per developmental needs of the learners. 8. not require specific resources or technology which is not accessible to all learners. 9. have clearly defined, purposeful, creative and engaging activities.

It is also advised that teachers can refer to Life Skills Manuals, Health Manuals and Environmental Education Manuals which contain age appropriate and interesting activities which can be taken up by the learners individually. These activities can be assigned to learners so as to enhance their life skills, values and make them health conscious.

Homework is needed, and necessary for a teacher to be able to follow up with each child. The correction and feedback on homework is an important input that helps both parents and children to follow up and improve in areas which are needed. The recourse extra classes, can be reduced if the homework is used for learning improvement and acquisition of diverse skills. We are providing a handful help to solve or helping in solving the holiday homework.

Holiday Math Project: Math Menu

  • Differentiation , Engagement

creative maths holiday homework for class 6

Let’s celebrate the season with some holiday math projects! In this post, I share how to create and implement a holiday math menu for your students.

Holiday shopping at school.

Orchestra visit.

Field trip to see The Nutcracker.

Holiday choir performance.

Holiday party.

And the list goes on . . .

Let’s face it, it’s a busy time of year. Our calendars and inboxes fill with holiday invitations to special events.

It’s hard to believe there’s any time left for learning.

And, it becomes almost impossible to focus the students’ attention.

So . . . if you can’t beat them, join them. Right?

Integrating a creative and fun holiday math project or activity into your daily curriculum is one way to keep your students engaged during this exciting time of year.

Holiday Math Project

Math menus are fun, versatile, and easy to use. It’s also a simple way to differentiate learning products for your students.

Many teachers use content-based menus during math workshop or math centers to meet students’ academic needs, but what about a problem-solving menu?

In the following paragraphs, I share a quick way to create a holiday math menu to use with your students before winter break, including the steps to create the menu and strategies for implementing it with your students.

This is an example of how math menus can be used as holiday math projects.

How to Create a Holiday Math Menu

1. decide on a menu style..

The easiest menu is a choice board. This menu has nine boxes with tasks, problems, or activities for students to complete. Typically, students complete the tasks in a row, column, diagonal, or the four corners to “complete” the board.

You may also consider using a game show menu. It’s bigger than a choice board with more options, so it will take the students longer to complete. It’s a great choice if you have categories of tasks or skills you want to include.

Read more about the different menu types here .

2. Gather your tasks.

This is my favorite aspect of building menus! You can use almost anything you have to fill the menu. I like to look for critical thinking activities or products students have to create. Not only does it take longer to complete, but it keeps students engaged for a longer period of time. For example, in the holiday math menu above, I included some of my favorite holiday math problem-solving challenges.

3. Place the tasks in the menu spaces.

Depending on the menu you chose, your placement of the tasks will be different. For example, with the choice board, you want to pay special attention to where you place things. Let’s face it, some of our students will look for the simplest path, so you want to ensure all the paths have about the same level of difficulty. On the other hand, for the game show menu, you can place the items anywhere and then assign them point values equivalent to their level of difficulty.

4. Present the menu to your students.

This is a fun time! Students get excited about completing math menus and this will quickly become their favorite holiday math project. Be sure to review the tasks and let students know what the success criteria will be. I usually discuss each task and then allow students to ask questions.

5. Make materials accessible to students.

Since menus typically have a lot of moving parts, it’s good to have a central location where students can find materials. For example, whenever I use a problem-solving menu, I keep the tasks in a file crate. This way, students grab the challenges as they need them. You may also want to consider having a basket of other necessary supplies or copies of printables students may need.

6. Watch them go!

I love to set aside time each day for students to work on their menus while I play a little holiday music; however, the menu may work better as a fast-finisher task in your classroom. Whatever you decide, be sure all students have an opportunity to tackle the tasks, even if they can’t finish the menu.

How to Grade the Menus

Teachers often ask me about grading menus. While it’s important to decide what is best for your own classroom, based on your unique needs and circumstances, here are some ideas:

a.) Give a completion grade

b.) Use a rubric and give credit for tasks completed according to menu guidelines

c.) Have students record their problem-solving strategies and solutions in a journal you can review and then give feedback

d.) Have students share their work during a math talk session.

Let’s Celebrate the Season!

This time of the year is full of the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and our school days fill with holiday warmth and excitement for the upcoming winter break. Keep your students engaged with a holiday math project! Use the directions above to create your own or grab your free holiday math menu using the form below.

What is your favorite holiday math project? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Why ‘Blackout’ on your menu?

Hi Robin! Thank you for your question! The menu displayed here is just an example of a menu that could be created for students. I decided to make it a “blackout” menu because it would take students longer to complete; however, I do recognize that some students may not have the time or ability to do more than just a few of the tasks. It’s important that all students have a chance to feel success with the menu, so I added an additional page to the freebie that includes directions for completing a row, column, diagonal, or the four corners. If you are already on my email list, this updated pack was sent via email this morning. Otherwise, when you complete the form, you will receive the updated version. Thank you again for reaching out to me.

Love the holiday menu. Thanks for the ideas. I think kids will enjoy the holiday spin to their daily math options.

Hi Frances! I’m so glad you found the holiday math menu useful! Love that you’re adding it to their daily options!

20+ creative alternative homework ideas for teachers

creative maths holiday homework for class 6

When giving homework, it must always be based on learning goals your students have to reach, just like in your lessons. But it’s sad to see that lots of teachers are using homework as extra lesson time. Of course, as a teacher, you’re on a clock. But that doesn’t mean your students have to suffer from it and keep working on those boring textbooks and worksheets at home.

Consider goals like attitudes, real-life experiences, and practice, physical exercise, social encounters, creative solutions, and philanthropy as crucial as your lesson goals. These are things students don’t just pick up in your classroom. These are things they pick up in life.

In this blog post, I’ll give you some innovative homework ideas that will engage your students more. These alternatives to traditional homework will thereby also teach your students new things that can’t be taught in the classroom. You will find a variety of homework ideas: online and offline.

I will mention homework alternatives for primary school and high school. Some of these ideas can be changed a little bit, so they are the perfect fit for the right audience.

20 Creative homework ideas

You can divide homework tasks into the following themes or categories:

  • Crafts & arts
  • Outdoor activities & outings
  • Games and activities
  • Physical activities
  • Digital or computer activities
  • Philanthropy & social work
💡 Good to know : all the ready-to-use homework activities are created with BookWidgets . You can easily create activities like these yourself or duplicate an activity below for free, edit it if needed, and share it with your students. You can do so in the examples separately, or you can find all the homework examples in the BookWidgets Blog group folder .

Holiday Math Activities That 2nd Graders LOVE!

The month of December is a busy time of year in elementary classrooms.  There are many extra activities and schedule interruptions that can impact the time you have available for math practice.  In this post, I’m going to share one way that you can use to make the most of your math time in the weeks leading up to the holidays.  Keep reading for a variety of holiday math activities that will keep your students engaged in skill practice all month long!

creative maths holiday homework for class 6

Benefits of Holiday Math Activities

Holiday math activities are more than just adding fun clipart on a regular math worksheet.  In fact, there are several reasons why holiday-themed learning activities can benefit the students in your classroom.  Here are three of my favorites:

1. Engaging Review

The days leading up to a long break from school are definitely not the time to be teaching brand new math skills!  It’s common for students to have some skill regression over winter break, but it’s much more likely for newly-taught concepts.

Instead of using holiday activities to teach new math skills right before the holiday, you can focus on reviewing math concepts that your student have already learned.  This refresher will be just what they need before leaving for break.

2. Add to Classroom Festivities

Holiday math worksheets are a simple way to bring a touch of festivity to your regular classroom routine. Rather than feel like you’re competing against the anticipation of the upcoming holiday, you can help students channel their excitement into purposeful learning activities!

These festive activities can also be the perfect addition to a class party!  You can set up a variety of special learning stations with a fun holiday twist.

3. Easily Repeated

Holiday math activities are also great for the busy days of December because your students will want to play them again and again!  This cuts down on prep time because you won’t have to track down quite as many review activities.

The holiday math activities that I’m going to share with you in this post can be laminated or added to a sheet protector so that you really only have to prep once to use them all month! Students can complete the activities using a dry eraser marker!

7 Holiday Math Activities for 2nd Grade

All of the holiday math activities that I’m going to share with you use a similar spin-and-solve format. Each printable activity can be used to practice and review a different second grade math skill.

Addition Fact Fluency

Your students will love to practice addition facts with this holiday math game!  They will use a paperclip and pencil to spin two different numbers.  After spinning, students can write and solve an addition equation using those numbers. Since students will spin a different combination of numbers each time, this activity is perfect for practicing a wide variety of math facts!

Three colorful spin and solve activities for math practice

Another great math skill for second graders to practice is counting back from large numbers.  This will help them prepare for subtraction practice as they strengthen their knowledge of place value.  Students will use three different spinners to create a three-digit number. After writing down that number, they can then write the following numbers as they count back.

There are even more ways to use spin and solve activities to practice place value.  Your students will have fun spinning three times to create a three-digit number.  After recording the number they spun, they will color in the correct base ten blocks to model the number. If you put this worksheet in a sheet protector, students can use a dry erase marker to repeat this activity again and again.

Place Value

By including spinners in these activities, students can practice place value using different numbers each time! After spinning to create a three-digit number, students can model it by drawing base ten blocks on the paper.

Two holiday-themed math activities

Odd and Even

Another skill that students can review using spinner activities is determining if a number is odd or even.  Students can use the spinners to create a two-digit number.  After writing down the number, they can color the correct gumdrop to show whether the number is even or odd.

Doubles Addition

Festive coloring pages are always a hit in December, so why not bring some coloring fun to math practice?  For this activity, students will choose from one of two spinners.  After landing on a number, they will double the number to find what color they will use. If you would like this activity to take a longer amount of time, students will spin and color just one block at a time.  If time is more limited, students can color all of the blocks of a given number at one time.

A spin and solve coloring activity

Multi-Digit Addition

There are several fun activities to help students practice addition with multiple digits.  For example, this activity uses four spinners that students can use to build two different two-digit numbers.  After modeling each number with base ten blocks, students can use the model to add these two numbers.

A Christmas themed two-digit addition activity

Printable Holiday Math Activities for 2nd Grade

The math skills above (and more) can be practiced in a festive way with these holiday math activities for second grade.  Each of the thirteen math skills come with two page options to use with your students. These printables are meant to help your students review important math skills before leaving for the holiday break.  Since the spinner format is similar for all of the activities, students will have no trouble completing these activities independently. This makes them a great option for independent learning times such as math centers and morning work!
