Institute for Behavioral Economics

Social sciences meet economic analysis.

At the Institute for Behavioral Economics, psychological insights come together with economic analysis, blending the disciplines’ strengths with sophisticated analytical tools.

The goal is to promote research and teaching in the field of behavioral economics and to expand the field through seminars and events.

Under the direction of Professor of Economics Martin Dufwenberg, the Institute of Behavioral Economics brings faculty, staff and students together to uncover fascinating new insights that are only possible when social scientists and economists work together.

About Behavioral Economics

It’s a merging of two worlds.

Traditionally, economics uses sophisticated mathematical and econometric methods, but relies on relatively simplistic assumptions about human nature. Meanwhile, by contrast, research in neighboring social sciences generally uses less sophisticated analytical methods while entertaining a richer description of man.

Behavioral economics (BE) combines the strengths of both. Here, we incorporate psychological insights into economic analysis, typically with continued use of sophisticated analytical tools.

BE has recently become the fastest growing field in economics—and one of the most exciting. It examines a wealth of evidence, often experimental, identifying empirical phenomena that are not adequately explained by traditional economic analysis. BE develops new models that incorporate emotions, fairness, reciprocity, social norms, bounded rationality and myopia, among others. The research often builds on game theory, which provides more flexible tools for this purpose than classical price theory or general equilibrium theory. BE is developed hand-in-hand by theorists and experimentalists, with many scholars having a foot in each camp.

BE is a portrait of the power in interdisciplinary work. Economists are informed by researchers in other fields, such as psychology, sociology, philosophy and the neurosciences. In return, BE offers analytical tools, models and modes of thinking that can enhance the research of scholars outside economics.

Robert G. and Sue Douthit O’Donnell Center for Behavioral Economics

behavioral economics phd rankings

Advancing research, industry partnerships and graduate student training in behavioral economics & finance at UC Berkeley.

Our Mission

Berkeley’s philosophy is that behavioral economics enriches rather than contradicts standard economic thought. When the tools of psychology and other sciences are joined with the proven analytical methods of economics, the results are more powerful and scholars get closer to underlying truths about human behavior.

At Berkeley, behavioral research is interwoven into the research of academics across departments and schools. Our mission is to serve as the center of gravity supporting researchers, graduate students and industry partners interested in understanding and applying non-standard economic thinking in their fields of interests.

BEAM Conference – UC Berkeley to Celebrate 30th Anniversary of Behavioral Economics

Our History

In 1987, a cross-disciplinary course at the University of California, Berkeley marked a milestone for a new field of study. Two professors, an economist and a psychologist, joined forces to teach a PhD class that used the analytical tools of social and cognitive psychology to investigate economic problems. Their teaching was a foundation for what is now known as behavioral economics. This line of study has reshaped the way scholars explain how people make choices, not only as consumers, investors, and employees, but also as voters, patients, students, and in many other areas of life. The two professors, George Akerlof and Daniel Kahneman, went on to win Nobel prizes. And Berkeley became a standard-bearer in this flourishing field, which emerged as a revolutionizing force in economics.

The O’Donnell Center for Behavioral Economics carries on this proud tradition and ensures that Berkeley remains a center of excellence in this field by supporting research, teaching, and graduate student training that meet the highest standards of scholarship, relevance, and innovation. The center promotes Berkeley’s particular brand of behavioral economics on a global stage, an approach that combines rigorous economic analysis with insights drawn from psychology and across the sciences.

Our Objectives

Strengthening research collaboration.

The center aims to build a research network and community of practice in these areas. This will facilitate interdisciplinary research in the field and enable the adoption of a behavioral lens in new areas. For reference some of the current research by members in IBEF include:

  • How can the principles of behavioral sciences be applied to increase diversity in recruitment and selection in firms?
  • How do errors in beliefs and judgements such overconfidence and the sunk-cost fallacy hamper entrepreneurs, and which organizational fixes might help to overcome these hurdles.
  • How do principles of behavioral economics help explain why wages, unemployment, and organizational structures look the way they do?

Facilitating External Partnerships

The center aims to amplify the impact of behavioral research conducted on campus by enabling strategic partnerships with academic researchers, industry partners, and policy makers . This includes supporting empirical research through industry partnerships, sourcing innovative data for research and disseminating behavioral insights to targeted stakeholders. Through these partnerships, researchers at UC Berkeley will support the adoption of novel, non-standard economic insights to create sustainable systems, processes and policies.

Supporting Adoption of Research Insights

The center is committed to empowering the next generation of industry leaders, entrepreneurs and researchers. IBEF will play an active role in identifying opportunities to incorporate insights from behavioral research in masters’ level curriculum, and serve as a partner to student led organizations interested in incorporating tools and methodologies from research into practice.

The data presented here is experimental. It is based on a limited sample of the research output in Economics and Finance. Only material catalogued in RePEc is considered. For any citation based criterion, only works that could be parsed by the CitEc project are considered. For any ranking of people, only those registered with the RePEc Author Service can be taken into account. And for rankings of institutions, only those listed in EDIRC and claimed as affiliation by the respective, registered authors can be measured. Thus, this list is by no means based on a complete sample. You can help making this more comprehensive by encouraging more publications to be listed ( instructions ) and more authors to register ( form ). Alum: Tulane is a fun school that treats you like you are family even if you are a distance learner. Professors are knowledgeable and have decades of experience. I was a certificate student. All of my classes were online, and for the most part, flowed smoothly. The only exception was when the school was hit by a hurricane. Classes, even online ones, were canceled for weeks. Teachers then had to hurry through the material to catch up which was stressful at times. Graduation is typically one big party that spills into the street as a parade in true NOLA style. I would return to complete my graduate degree. ... Read 20 reviews

Ph.D. Program in Economics

Graduates have exceptional research training in economic theory and the quantitative tools required for innovative research on complex economic problems..

The purpose of the Ph.D. program in Economics is to educate scientists who will advance the frontiers of economic knowledge through research and teaching.

The program is designed to provide students with sound training in economic theory, and the quantitative tools required for innovative research on economic problems. Equally important, the program is structured to allow students both time and guidance for research activities.

The goal of the doctoral program in economics is to help students learn to do original, creative research. Unlike most graduate programs in economics, we have chosen not to impose rigid course requirements on students. Instead, we emphasize involving students in research early in their graduate careers. Students in the doctoral program in economics at the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon take courses in order to learn the fundamental principles of economic theory underlying all areas of application, and to master the analytic and modeling techniques of the practicing research economist. In-depth knowledge of specialized areas is required as a by-product of research activity.

At the completion of the Ph.D. program in economics at the Tepper School, a student should have mastered the fundamental principles of economic theory and the quantitative tools required for basic and applied research. Additionally, the student should have attained a level of skill in research techniques which will serve as the basis for continued self-development.

  • Students are expected to obtain knowledge of substantive research areas by taking elective courses, attending and participating in seminars, working with the faculty, and reading research papers.
  • Students are urged to actively involve themselves in the intellectual life of the school.
  • Seminars are a fundamental mechanism for exchange of information throughout the profession, and they are an essential professional activity of a successful research economist.
  • Students should plan to attend weekly seminars throughout their stay at the business school.

Early Life Conditions, Time Preferences, and Savings

Piggy bank being filled with coins

This study examines how early-life exposure to food scarcity influences individuals' long-term time preferences and savings behavior. To this end, we analyze hand-collected historical data on livestock availability during World War II at the province level, alongside detailed survey data on elicited time preferences and household savings.

(with Effrosyni Adamopoulou and Eleftheria Triviza )

By leveraging differences across cohorts and provinces in a difference-in-differences framework, we find that individuals who experienced more severe scarcity during childhood develop higher levels of patience later in life and tend to hold more (precautionary) savings, conditional on income. Our findings suggest that exposure to protein scarcity during the first years of life and in utero can instigate a lasting increase in prudent behavior in the form of a coping mechanism.
