Think of yourself as a member of a jury, listening to a lawyer who is presenting an opening argument. You'll want to know very soon whether the lawyer believes the accused to be guilty or not guilty, and how the lawyer plans to convince you. Readers of academic essays are like jury members: before they have read too far, they want to know what the essay argues as well as how the writer plans to make the argument. After reading your thesis statement, the reader should think, "This essay is going to try to convince me of something. I'm not convinced yet, but I'm interested to see how I might be."

An effective thesis cannot be answered with a simple "yes" or "no." A thesis is not a topic; nor is it a fact; nor is it an opinion. "Reasons for the fall of communism" is a topic. "Communism collapsed in Eastern Europe" is a fact known by educated people. "The fall of communism is the best thing that ever happened in Europe" is an opinion. (Superlatives like "the best" almost always lead to trouble. It's impossible to weigh every "thing" that ever happened in Europe. And what about the fall of Hitler? Couldn't that be "the best thing"?)

A good thesis has two parts. It should tell what you plan to argue, and it should "telegraph" how you plan to argue—that is, what particular support for your claim is going where in your essay.

Steps in Constructing a Thesis

First, analyze your primary sources.  Look for tension, interest, ambiguity, controversy, and/or complication. Does the author contradict himself or herself? Is a point made and later reversed? What are the deeper implications of the author's argument? Figuring out the why to one or more of these questions, or to related questions, will put you on the path to developing a working thesis. (Without the why, you probably have only come up with an observation—that there are, for instance, many different metaphors in such-and-such a poem—which is not a thesis.)

Once you have a working thesis, write it down.  There is nothing as frustrating as hitting on a great idea for a thesis, then forgetting it when you lose concentration. And by writing down your thesis you will be forced to think of it clearly, logically, and concisely. You probably will not be able to write out a final-draft version of your thesis the first time you try, but you'll get yourself on the right track by writing down what you have.

Keep your thesis prominent in your introduction.  A good, standard place for your thesis statement is at the end of an introductory paragraph, especially in shorter (5-15 page) essays. Readers are used to finding theses there, so they automatically pay more attention when they read the last sentence of your introduction. Although this is not required in all academic essays, it is a good rule of thumb.

Anticipate the counterarguments.  Once you have a working thesis, you should think about what might be said against it. This will help you to refine your thesis, and it will also make you think of the arguments that you'll need to refute later on in your essay. (Every argument has a counterargument. If yours doesn't, then it's not an argument—it may be a fact, or an opinion, but it is not an argument.)

This statement is on its way to being a thesis. However, it is too easy to imagine possible counterarguments. For example, a political observer might believe that Dukakis lost because he suffered from a "soft-on-crime" image. If you complicate your thesis by anticipating the counterargument, you'll strengthen your argument, as shown in the sentence below.

Some Caveats and Some Examples

A thesis is never a question.  Readers of academic essays expect to have questions discussed, explored, or even answered. A question ("Why did communism collapse in Eastern Europe?") is not an argument, and without an argument, a thesis is dead in the water.

A thesis is never a list.  "For political, economic, social and cultural reasons, communism collapsed in Eastern Europe" does a good job of "telegraphing" the reader what to expect in the essay—a section about political reasons, a section about economic reasons, a section about social reasons, and a section about cultural reasons. However, political, economic, social and cultural reasons are pretty much the only possible reasons why communism could collapse. This sentence lacks tension and doesn't advance an argument. Everyone knows that politics, economics, and culture are important.

A thesis should never be vague, combative or confrontational.  An ineffective thesis would be, "Communism collapsed in Eastern Europe because communism is evil." This is hard to argue (evil from whose perspective? what does evil mean?) and it is likely to mark you as moralistic and judgmental rather than rational and thorough. It also may spark a defensive reaction from readers sympathetic to communism. If readers strongly disagree with you right off the bat, they may stop reading.

An effective thesis has a definable, arguable claim.  "While cultural forces contributed to the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, the disintegration of economies played the key role in driving its decline" is an effective thesis sentence that "telegraphs," so that the reader expects the essay to have a section about cultural forces and another about the disintegration of economies. This thesis makes a definite, arguable claim: that the disintegration of economies played a more important role than cultural forces in defeating communism in Eastern Europe. The reader would react to this statement by thinking, "Perhaps what the author says is true, but I am not convinced. I want to read further to see how the author argues this claim."

A thesis should be as clear and specific as possible.  Avoid overused, general terms and abstractions. For example, "Communism collapsed in Eastern Europe because of the ruling elite's inability to address the economic concerns of the people" is more powerful than "Communism collapsed due to societal discontent."

BTH 9743 Bachelor Thesis - Small Business Development

This bachelor's thesis in combination with the course BST 9742 Small Business Development, 15 ECTS, constitutes a specialisation of 30 ECTS. Students in the Bachelor of Business Administration or the Bachelor of Marketing programme who have chosen this combination will receive a final certificate stating that they have completed this specialisation.

The bachelor's thesis is a significant independent piece of work in which the students are to show that they can examine a current problem and take overall responsibility for solving it in a suitable manner. The bachelor's thesis is a mandatory part of the programme. It is to be written in groups of 2-3 collaborating students. In special cases students may be permitted to write individually.

• The students are to acquire an understanding of the operations of small businesses while working on their bachelor's thesis.
• They will also gain an understanding of the significance of management of small businesses and of the overall perspectives of small businesses.
• The students should be able to prepare plans for growth in SMEs
• They must be able to prepare budgets
• They must be able to describe the collaboration within the group.
• The students are to develop critical reflection
• They should develop ethical consciousness associated with business management.

The students are responsible for finding a topic or problem area that is suitable for the specialization in Small Business Development.

Students are expected to take personal responsibility for work on their bachelor’s thesis. Tutorials and seminars presuppose that students are prepared for discussions and tutoring.　

The students must fill in their chosen topic in a registration form. They will then be assigned a supervisor. The course duration is one semester and includes both seminars and tutorials. Guidelines for writing Bachelor thesis are to be found on the student portal @BI.

The teaching includes 4 seminars. For each seminar the students must usually prepare and present, and/or hand in material beforehand.　

Up to 3 hours of individual tutoring for each student group is offered. The seminar teaching is mandatory. Students that have not taken part in seminars and/or have not handed in documentation must expect to be called in for an oral check.

The course is supported by BI’s learning platform and the students must have access to PCs with relevant software. The library offers courses and guidance in using the statistics program (SASJMP) and literature searches.

Two years of college education in economics and business administration, marketing or equivalent is required for taking the course. 

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there may be deviations in teaching and learning activities as well as exams, compared with what is described in this course description.

Information about what is taught on campus and other digital forms will be presented with the lecture plan before the start of the course each semester.

The students must have completed BST 9742 Small Business Development or have equivalent knowledge. In addition they must have basic knowledge of social science methodology.

A course of 1 ECTS credit corresponds to a workload of 26-30 hours. Therefore a course of 15 ECTS credit corresponds to a workload of at least 400 hours.

This business model is now being digitally transformed: On the one hand, e-commerce, mobile shopping, sensor technologies, smart devices and artificial intelligence are but a few of digital innovations that threaten traditional retailers. On the other hand, digital technologies also present enormous potential for improvements and innovation within established, central operational routines. The COVID-19 pandemic induced a massive disruption on societal as well as entrepreneurial life. Since “offline” multi-actor interactions have been inhibited due to containment measures, digitalizing related activities evolved as the medium of choice. The digitalization of multisensory experiential activities (MEA) such as culinary tastings or cooking workshops became emblematic for the disruption of the pandemic and initiated the genesis of an industry of digitalized MEAs. However, digitalizing these activities is challenging since their original participation stimulates a broad sensory spectrum that cannot be replicated completely by their digital counterpart. The question arises, how the quality of real-world multisensory experience can be provided through adequate digital design. In this context, also visionary technologies should be considered (e.g., holograph or VR technology) that exceed the technological affordances of current video-conferencing tools and might leverage the quality of multisensory experience.

The Best Final Theses in 2022

March 27, 2023

More than 170 final theses were submitted to the examination office of Munich Business School in 2022. Four of them stood out in particular: They are the best theses of the year and were included in the MBS Outstanding Thesis series. In the blog article, we present the topics of the theses in more detail and let the honorees and their supervisors have their say.

As in the previous year , the best theses of 2022 demonstrate that bachelor’s and master’s theses are not only the icing on the cake on the way to graduation, but can also make a valuable contribution to research on current topics. “Best”, by the way, does not only refer to an outstanding grade; the theses should primarily convince through innovative approaches and methods as well as new findings.

And now, clear the ring for the best theses of 2022!

Mitigating, Managing and Moving Past Burnout: An Organizational Perspective on Mental and Physical Well-Being

Bachelor’s thesis by gavin trudeau.

Gavin Trudeau, graduate of the bachelor’s program International Business at MBS, deals in his bachelor’s thesis with the topic of burnout, which has become more present in society as well as in medicine and the workplace in recent years. On the basis that burnout is not just an isolated feeling of overwhelm, but a syndrome which is experienced after ongoing negative experiences that and poses great dangers to organizations and their employees, Gavin Trudeau discusses causes, symptoms, and prevention strategies. By combining a comprehensive literature review with empirical research consisting of a self-reporting survey and in-depth interviews, the bachelor’s graduate succeeds in painting a “holistic picture” that reveals “not only what causes stress at the workplace but also shows the drivers as well as appropriate measures at the company and their relation to avoid negative impacts” – say the thesis supervisors Prof. Dr. Arnd Albrecht and Evelyn Albrecht-Goepfert.

We asked Gavin Trudeau how he came to address the topic of burnout in his bachelor’s thesis:

“I have always been interested in psychology and the importance of mental health so it was important for me to bring those two elements into my thesis and relate it to current issues I had been witnessing in the business landscape. At the time I started thinking about my topic we were still in the depths of the pandemic, and working from home was still mandatory for most people. I was seeing and hearing so many examples of people from my network experiencing abnormal levels of stress at their jobs and having difficulties adapting to the new way of life and working, which ultimately led me to the topic of burnout prevention, stress reduction and health promotion. I thought these topics were extremely relevant and also forward thinking. The importance of mental health in the workplace is on the rise and starting to be seen as equally important as physical health. My motivation for this research was to be able to provide valuable and insightful data and recommendations so that CEO’s, managers, entrepreneurs and employees can integrate these learnings into their lives to create healthier and more positive work environments.”

Bootstrapping New Networks – Incentivization Strategies to Leverage Network Effects within Digital Platforms by Using Blockchain Technology

Start-ups must deal with the “cold start” problem and especially for platforms that fight the “chicken and egg” dilemma, building an initial user base is a major challenge. Since new emerging technologies such as blockchain technology have so far received only little attention in research on this topic, although they promise attractive solutions, Philipp Wohlfart addresses this issue in his master’s thesis. The Innovation and Entrepreneurship graduate explores the question of how blockchain technology can help to bootstrap new networks by using token incentives when application utility is still missing. To answer the question, Phillip Wohlfart conducted six semi-structured experts interviews – with the result that token incentives can support in many ways.

Analysis of the Impact of Customer Experience Management Among B2B Companies in the Construction Industry

While B2C companies have been firmly incorporating customer experience management (CXM) strategies into their business models for quite some time and there is accordingly sufficient research on the subject, the relevance of CXM in the B2B context has only recently been repeatedly emphasized. To investigate the importance of CXM in the context of his master’s thesis, Sarim Mehtab Hasan chooses the construction industry, for which the requirement of customer experience is even more vital due to diverse stakeholders. Interviews with senior professionals from construction companies show that the construction industry is still traditional, focuses on short-term returns, which doesn’t align with customer’s needs, and overall lacks awareness of CXM and its benefits. Sarim Hasan uses these – rather sobering – results to derive recommendations as well as short- and long-term implementation strategies for the construction industry in terms of customer experience, which earned his thesis the rating “outstanding”.

We asked Sarim Hasan what it means to him that his thesis in the MBA General Management was awarded as MBS Outstanding Thesis:

It was my first time writing a thesis and I learnt a lot during the entire process. Not only was I able to get an extensive understanding of the topic of CXM in the B2B environment but also improve my personal & professional skills. This, combined with the experience I gained from the business projects during my studies at MBS, really elevated my capability to manage projects effectively, which is something I currently apply on a daily basis in my full-time job. Getting this award gave a substantial boost to my confidence levels, especially to take on new risks for a higher reward, and validated the importance of CXM in today’s customer-driven business world. After working for almost 8 months in a customer-facing role post-MBA, I can undoubtedly confirm that my thesis has played a major role in my performance as a Customer Experience Manager at A2MAC1 and I hope that other business students find value in my research and take it even further.

Economic Evaluation of Digitized Health Data for the German Health Care System Using the Example of the Electronic Health Record

Mba master’s thesis by dr. sven grösgen.

Dr. Sven Grösgen dedicates his final thesis to a highly topical and explosively discussed subject: Germany’s plans to introduce of an electronic patient record. Such a digital file promises not only to improve healthcare, but also to have a positive impact on the economy. However, the status quo is that only 1.8% of total annual spending has been devoted to driving digitization in healthcare, while per capita spending continues to rise at the same time. With a general analysis of the electronic patient record and a detailed cost benefit analysis, Sven Grösgen shows that digital storage of health data has potential to counteract inefficiencies in healthcare and that the costs would be offset within the first ten years. In addition, the MBA graduate advocates an “opt-out” instead of an “opt-in” model and provides further impulses on how the implementation of an electronic patient record can be increased and further developed into an electronic health record.

Empirical researchers aim to find causal inferences – to what extent does a presumed cause lead to an effect or outcome. In entrepreneurship and innovation, empirical research is often conducted using secondary data. This data is usually cost-effective, instantly available, and sometimes the only viable option for specific research settings. An example may be: To what extent does spending in research and development (R&D) increase the likelihood of new product development in the upcoming years. However, data on R&D spending is not available for all firms since its reporting may be optional for the management of a firm. This may hinder empirical research because crucial observations may be missing causing a selection bias and getting the causation wrong – endogeneity – distorts the results. By identifying and applying statistical techniques and robustness tests in Stata, the validity of an empirical study can be significantly improved, e.g., the Heckman 2-stage estimation, control function, and impact threshold of a confounding variable ITCV.

2. "Identifying top management team characteristics that affect green external venturing activity"

According to the upper echelon perspective, the experience of top management team (TMT) members shapes their views and ultimately their decision-making. Are their certain TMT characteristics that foster green external corporate venturing acticity (i.e. green M&A, green CVC, green alliances)?

3. "Innovation as Big Tech’s winning formula – Are the FAANG companies better than the old economy in innovating?"

The 2010s have seen the tremendous rise of technology companies in economic importance and stock prices. Five companies – namely Facebook (Meta), Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Google (Alphabet) are particularly prominent and said to dominate their markets. How come? A recent stream of literature investigates the role of innovation for those companies’ success. This thesis aims to advance recent literature by comparing Big Tech’s innovation activity to that of the old economy. How do their innovations differ? Do Big Tech companies bring more radical innovations and breakthroughs to the market? This thesis aims at addressing those questions empirically building upon existing data and approaches.

4. "Digital Health and Innovation in healthcare"

The digitalisation of healthcare has been one of the main drivers of innovation in the healthcare sector, and not just since the Corona pandemic. An increasing number of digital solutions are in development or are being introduced into the German health market under the term Digital Health Application (DiGa). In the context of these developments, we examine the role of start-ups and established companies in this development. Further research questions are the origin of innovations and their penetration in the market. Which go-to-market strategies exist and which of them are suitable for start-up-related innovations. 5. "Hit or hype? Digital technologies shaking up today's economic landscape"

Digital transformation is shaking up the value chains of companies in all industries. An unprecedented number of new technologies are entering the market, e.g. artificial intelligence or blockchain. The impact of these technologies on our economy today, but also on social life in general, needs to be explored intensively. Theses in this area investigate these interrelationships with different methodological approaches, e.g. literature reviews, surveys, secondary data analysis.

6. "The Significance of Solid-State Battery Technology for Sustainable Energy Storage”

Sustainability and advancements in energy storage technologies are of great importance in today's world. In line with this trend, we aim to further advance research that will focus on solid-state battery technology. The objective of this research project is to conduct a comprehensive literature review and empirical data analysis to examine the current state of solid-state battery technology in terms of its performance, challenges, application areas, and potential benefits. Additionally, the study will collect relevant data on customer perspectives, market trends, and environmental impact.

8. "The relationship between green manufacturing and innovation - A systematic literature review"

Sustainability is not only becoming increasingly important for companies, but it also represents an exciting area of research. We aim to further advance findings by specifically focus on green manufacturing and its impact on innovation. This thesis aims to address how current research findings on green manufacturing can be systematized. Therefore, an extensive literature review will be conducted, and its findings will be used to develop a conceptual framework.

9. "Differentiating technologies for dealing with climate change - A systematic literature review"

As the world confronts the escalating challenges of climate change, climate change adaptation and adoption technologies are coming into the spotlight. We want to understand the focus of companies in their development efforts and how research has addressed the topic in the past. In this paper, a systematic literature review according to Tranfield (2003) is carried out to examine the two types of technology in more detail. Hereby, the analysis focuses on the patent class Y02. The evaluation of the current research landscape will thus help to understand the respective focal points and identify possible research gaps.

10. "Business models for battery pack recycling"

The industrial landscape for the recycling of traction batteries is currently reshaping itself. In addition to the traditional recyclers, many other players, such as automotive companies, are also getting involved. This is resulting in various possible business models along the recycling chain for traction batteries. In addition to the depth of added value of the individual players, the ownership structure of the valuable raw materials also plays a key role. As part of the thesis, a systematic literature review will be conducted to identify which business models are already established today. In addition, expert interviews with the various players will be conducted to find out which business models could develop in the future.

Currently there is the possibility to write theses at Durante Adesivi in Italy or the St. Franziskus Foundation . In addition, there is the possibility to write theses at the Fraunhofer Forschungsfertigung Batteriezelle (FFB) . If you are interested, please contact Maximilian Charlet .

Please apply to our chair  before you commit  to the partner to discuss whether your proposed topic is a good fit for our chair (see below for details on the application process). In your application, you will be asked to include the contact details of your contact within the partner organization. The final topic will be determined by the chair in consultation with the contact person.

You need to ensure that the partner agrees to make the data used in your thesis available to the academic supervisor and the head of the chair for the purpose of the examination.

Pursuant to the regulations governing examinations, the practice partner has no right to participate in the evaluation of the thesis. Other contractual agreements between the student and the company do not affect the regulations governing examinations set by the examination office and are solely in the candidate’s scope of responsibility.

Formal Requirements

Bachelor theses can be written in English or German. Detailed guidelines, especially with regard to the layout, will be provided in time once you are accepted.

To start your thesis, you need to fill in the candidate section of the guide card (“Leitkarte”) which you can find here . The writing period starts once the topic is assigned. You can calculate the exact start and submission dates for your specific circumstances in the online calculator here .

If the date of the submission deadline for the Master's thesis falls on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, the deadline for submission of the Master's thesis will be the next working day immediately following this date. 

Registration of (tentative) title and thesis statement

To start the preparation of the thesis you must decide on a topic and also formulate a tentative thesis statement.

Before 1 December /1 June you must register the (tentative) thesis title by completing the thesis registration webform.

The programme coordinator will assign you a supervisor. In the registration form you must make a suggestion for an academic supervisor. The assigned academic supervisor must approve the thesis title and thesis statement.

The master’s thesis can be written by one or two students. If you are two authors you must register by completing the same webform together (e.g. one webform for each 'group').

If you are writing a theoretical thesis please state it under the company information in the registration form.

Registration in the Student Self-Service (STADS)

You will automatically be registered for the Master’s thesis at the outset of the fourth semester with a submission deadline on 10 June/10 January. The deadline for assessment/the oral defense is 4 weeks, counting from the submission day.  Before the deadlines (listed above)  you must register your academic supervisor, the (tentative) thesis title and your problem statement.

Once you are registered, you cannot cancel your registration.

Approval of preliminary title and thesis statement

Your supervisor must formally approve of your preliminary title and thesis statement. This means that immediately before you begin writing your Master’s thesis, you will be asked to upload your preliminary title and thesis statement to WISEflow, where it will await formal approval from your supervisor. You can find the relevant deadline in the table under 'Deadlines'.

It is perfectly acceptable for the preliminary title and thesis statement to be identical to the description you submitted via the online form in connection with your request for / choice of supervisor, and you may change your title and thesis statement in collaboration with your supervisor on an ongoing basis while writing your Master’s thesis.

Register the companies/organisations you collaborate with

In order to improve your career prospects, we need to collect information on the companies/organisations that you may collaborate with.  

Once you have registered for your Master’s thesis, you will receive a form in your AU mailbox. The form contains a few questions regarding your collaboration with the company/organisation.  

You must complete the form regardless of whether you are collaborating with a company/organisation or not.

From the summer 2024 the use of generative artificial intelligence tools will be permitted for this exam. The general rules on plagiarism apply if generative artificial intelligence is used. You must specify how generative artificial intelligence has been used in an appendix to the assignment.

Handing in your thesis

Handing in your thesis .

Your Master’s thesis must be uploaded in WiseFlow. When you have handed in the thesis in WiseFlow it will automatically be send to supervisor and external examiner.

Please be aware, that in case you hand in before the deadline, the exam period will still be from the deadline date and 6 weeks on from this.

WISEflow You will receive an e-mail from WISEflow when it is possible to upload your Master's thesis. Deadline for handing in the thesis in WISEflow is 10 June at 12:00/10 January.

This means that you should begin uploading well in advance before deadline, since the flow closes exactly at 12:00. Uploading a thesis can take up to 30 minutes. 

If you experience problems with uploading your thesis, please contact the  technical and/or administrative support .  

Once you have uploaded your thesis it is not possible to withdraw it. Therefore, you must make absolutely sure that you upload the correct version.

The flow is set up as a “group-flow”. If the Master's thesis is written by one person you must choose "Create one-person group" in WISEflow.  If you have not previously tried to upload an assignment in WISEflow as a group, please read and follow the  instructions on how to submit as a group  i the FAQ.

The thesis including appendixes must be saved as one PDF-file and uploaded under “Paper”.  Read more on how to convert your paper to PDF . 

Under the category “Extra material” you can upload material like movies, sound, programs (Excel, SAS mv.). The extra material does not have to be a pdf-file and you can hand in more than one file up to a maximum size of 5 GB.

Theses handed in before the deadline will not be sent to evaluation before the deadline 10 June/10 January. 

Oral defense The department will send you information regarding the oral examination date in wiseflow or on your student email. The deadline for assessment/the oral defence is 6 weeks, counting from the submission day.

No access to OneDrive after graduation Once your last grade is registered you will no longer have access to OneDrive. This means that you have to download and transfer your files from OneDrive before finishing your programme.

It is not possible to restore access to OneDrive once you have finished your programme at Aarhus University.

Submitting your thesis before the submission deadline

If you would like to submit your Master's thesis prior to the deadline, you must be aware of the following:

• If you submit more than 14 days before the fixed submission deadline, your Master's thesis will be sent for assessment as quickly as possible, and the assessment deadline will be up to six weeks from the date of submission. At the same time, you must send an email to [email protected] regarding the early submission of the thesis. 
• If you submit 14 days or less before your fixed submission deadline, your assessor will not be informed of your submission until the official submission deadline, after which the four week assessment deadline is set in motion. However, your assessor can access your Master's thesis from the day you submit and can send in the assessment as soon as the thesis is assessed.

Early submission during the summer period for the second examination attempt If you wish to submit your thesis in June or July, you must notify [email protected] . 

July is assessment-free, and individual evaluation deadlines must therefore be set for early submissions. As a rule, the assessment deadline will be four weeks + the month of July.

Please note, this is only possible for students who have not submitted by 10 June. If you do not pass the Master's thesis, you must familiarise yourself with the section below: " If you do not pass your Master's thesis ".

If you fail to submit your Master's thesis on time

If you fail to submit your Master's thesis within the prescribed submission deadline, it means you will have spent an examination attempt.

You must subsequently prepare a revised thesis statement within the same subject area and with the same supervisor.

Please contact your supervisor no later than five days after you have received the not passing grade (not including the month of July). Together, you must prepare and agree on a revised thesis statement. You must upload the revised thesis statement to WISEflow, where it will await formal approval from your supervisor. (Please note that the July month is free of assessment).

It is your responsibility to contact your supervisor to initiate this process.

The new submission deadline for handing in your Master's thesis will be 3 months + 14 days from your original submission deadline. The new submission deadline will automatically come into effect the day after your orginal deadline. If you fail to submit your Master's thesis by the new deadline, it means you will have spent yet another examination attempt.  

If you fail to submit your Master's thesis within the submission deadline for your second examination attempt, the same procedure will apply.

Registration for the second and third examination attempt will happen automatically.  

If you do not pass your Master's thesis

To pass your Master's thesis, you have to achieve the grade 02 or higher. If your Master's thesis is not awarded the grade 02 or higher, you will have spent an examination attempt.  You must subsequently prepare a revised thesis statement within the same subject area and with the same supervisor.

Please contact your supervisor no later than five days after you have received the not passing grade (not including the month of July). Together, you must prepare and agree on a revised thesis statement.

You must upload the revised thesis statement to WISEflow, where it will await formal approval from your supervisor. (Please note that the July month is free of assessment).

The new submission deadline for handing in your Master's thesis will be 3 months + 14 days from the assessment deadline for your first examination attempt. The new submission deadline will automatically come into effect the day after the assessment date. If you fail to submit your Master's thesis by the new deadline, it means you will have spent yet another examination attempt.  

The same procedure will apply if your Master's thesis is not awarded the grade 02 or higher at your second examination attempt.

Especially for students writing Master's thesis in the spring semester For students writing Master's thesis in the spring semester, the assessment deadline is 30 June.

Since the month of July does not count in the assessment period, the deadline for submission is three months + 14 days from 1st August and your 2nd examination attempt can therefore start at the earliest on 15 August. This notwithstanding that you will receive a non-pass assessment earlier than the 30 June.
