The Payette Sho-Ping Chin Memorial Academic Scholarship is a $10,000 architecture scholarship supporting a woman studying architecture within a NAAB-accredited bachelor or master’s degree program. To help the scholarship recipient establish contacts within the profession, she will be assigned a senior mentor from Payette for the scholarship year.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Payette Sho-Ping Chin Memorial Academic Scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

• Identify as a woman
• GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Rising 3 rd or 4 th year undergraduate or graduate student in NAAB-accredited architecture program

Previous Payette Sho-Ping Chin Memorial Academic Scholarship recipients are eligible to reapply in subsequent years.

A good application essay should be unique and give details of your goals, principles, and what makes you deserve the scholarship. A scholarship essay should have the following principles;

• It should prevail a purpose. The scholarship essay should mention your interests and beliefs that the organization offering the scholarship believes in or practices.
• The length of your essay should not be more than 500 words. Make sure to give enough details to fit up to 500 words.
• Explain in your essay why you deserve the scholarship or what makes you fit to be allowed to be given the scholarship.

Praise the school for making your essay more attractive and positive. The scholarship givers will be happy to see how their school is known to be excellent.

Explain why you are choosing the course you’ve chosen. Write how important that course is to you. For example, if you’ve chosen to major in medicine, explain what motivated you or made you decide to do that course. You may say that you have a passion for being a doctor and like helping people and saving their lives.

Include how the scholarship will help you achieve your educational goals. For instance, write how you’ll be able to finish school with no financial issues and be stress-free knowing that the scholarship will get you through the required academic years to finish your course with good scores.

Expound on your long-term career goals. This will help show them how serious you are. Mention a few and explain their importance to you since they’re your goals. In explaining your goals, clarify what you will do with your degree or diploma. For instance, if you’re pursuing a degree in business management, illustrate how your degree will help you open up and maintain a business or how your degree will help you get your dream job in a certain company you’ve admired a lot.

A&A Scholarship Application

Making possibilities possible.

All current A&A students who have completed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA*); are enrolled in the college part-, half- or full-time; and have good academic standing are welcome to submit an application to be considered for any available A&A scholarships.

Applications are being accepted now through May 20, 2024, for the 24-25 academic year.

• This application is for scholarships offered at the college level (for an A&A major). For more information about scholarships available in your specific school or program, please contact the school or department directly.

Architecture Scholarships

As an architect major you'll learn how to create and design houses, buildings and other structures. This artistic and dynamic field requires creativity, acute visual awareness and critical thinking and communication skills. It's a competitive field but also one that offers many rewards. In the following paragraphs we'll look at how to become an architect as well as how to pursue the architecture scholarships that may help you realize your dreams.

Most architecture degree programs are designed so that students take mostly liberal arts and science courses at the start of the program. Architects do not design in a vacuum and they need to understand (and be somewhat sympathetic to) the society and culture in which they work. Coursework in art and architecture history, the social sciences and the physical sciences are also commonly encountered in the first two years.

As you begin your core architecture coursework you'll enroll in subjects such as architectural theory and design, engineering mechanics, computer-aided design (CAD), environmental controls, structural design and site design. As one can see, the design courses are the most important component of your core courses. You'll be spending many, many hours in the design studio working (alone or in groups) on your projects.

The majority of architecture undergraduate degree programs are 5-year programs. In addition, you will need to satisfy an internship requirement before you sit for the architecture licensing exam. The length of this required internship varies from state to state with the average length being three years. Be certain that the program you want to attend is accredited by an official educational body, such as the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).  

The employment prospects for architects are expected to be quite strong over the coming decade. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the need for architects will increase at a faster then average rate between now and 2020. This increase need will be fueled, in part, by an ever-expanding population. Also, sustainable design and the green movement will contribute to the rising demand. The popularity of sustainability and ecological consciousness may also be reflected in the available architecture scholarships. The scholarship opportunities are given to honorable engineering, science, technology, business, math, and economics students. They must fulfill all the requirements mentioned on the website, and the architecture students are chosen based on their essay-writing skills.

3. Architects Foundation- McAslan Fellowship

Price : $15,000 per year

The McAslan Fellowship provides top graduating students with financial support for academic travel opportunities and connections to international architects who can serve as mentors.

The Fellowship will be a travel and study award that will pay undergraduate seniors and graduate students for a summer of travel and study. Every year, one American student will get this merit-based scholarship.

The eligibility is for graduate, and undergraduate students graduating from an architectural school with NAAB accreditation or graduate students enrolled in an architecture program with NAAB accreditation.

4. Architects Foundation-Diversity Advancement Scholarship

Price : $20,000 per year

The Diversity Advancement Scholarship, worth up to $20,000 and $4,000 annually, aids minority undergraduate students who are enrolling in, transferring to, or beginning their first year of study in an undergraduate architecture school certified by the NAAB. Scholarships are renewable annually for five years, or until your degree is earned.

The Diversity Advancement Scholarship is looking for minority students whose creativity and design sensibility will shape the built environment and the future of the architecture profession.

5. Landscape Architecture Foundation-EDSA Minority Scholarship

Price : Two $5,000 scholarships per year

Thanks to the EDSA Diversity Scholarship, African American, Hispanic, Native American, and other minority students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds can continue their education in landscape architecture thanks to the EDSA Diversity Scholarship.

Candidates pursuing a master's degree in landscape architecture or their final two years of undergraduate studies are eligible.

6. Architectural Association School of Architecture

Price : One term (33%), two terms (66%) or three terms (100%) of the tuition fees

First, second, and fourth-year applicants who exhibit academic distinction and financial need are eligible for scholarships.

No matter their nationality or background, all applicants to the main undergraduate program are entitled to apply for a scholarship.

7. Kate Neal Kinley Memorial Fellowship

Price: $20,000 and $9,000 per year

The $20,000 scholarship is offered to architectural design and several art program students. On the other hand, $9,000 scholarship opportunities are offered to architecture, urban and regional planning, and landscape architecture students.

8. a/e ProNet David W. Lakamp Scholarship

Price : $5000 per year

Annually, this prize is given to two students keen on architectural practice and risk management. Students must meet one of the following requirements to be eligible for the a/e ProNet David W. Lakamp AIA Scholarship.

They must be fourth-year students in a NAAB-accredited degree program, fourth-year students in a four-year pre-professional degree program in architecture who have been accepted for direct entry into a two-year NAAB-accredited M.Arch program, or first-year students in a NAAB-accredited M.Arch degree program for students with

Price: $ 875.99 per month

The scholarship opportunities are available for undergraduate and graduate students wishing to pursue further studies in architecture at a German university. You will need to have obtained your last degree in the US or Canada or be a US or Canadian citizen.

10. AIA/AAF Minority/Disadvantaged Scholarship

Price: $10,000 in two installments annually

This architecture scholarship offers financial aid to high school graduates and college undergraduate students pursuing an architecture degree.

It was introduced to increase diversity in the architectural field by sponsoring a student or a fresher attending an architecture college in Chicago.

11. David W. Lakamp Scholarship Fund

Price: $5,000 per year, non-renewable

California architecture students may apply for this award, a non-renewable stipend worth up to $10,000.

Candidates for this scholarship program must have completed two years of undergraduate study.

12. Shade Sail Design Challenge Scholarship

Price : $1,500 (per semester)

College students with a passion for design, architecture, or engineering who can construct a shade sail structure using materials of standard size are eligible for this grant.

Only students who produce an original design and exhibit an aptitude for it will receive the money.

13. Joseph L. and Vivian E. Steele Architecture Scholarship

Price: $5,000 per year

Current or previous residents of the eligible counties in Pennsylvania are eligible to receive this scholarship.

Students must be enrolled in an architectural master's program or their final three years of an architecture bachelor's degree to qualify for this financial assistance.

14. CINTAS Foundation Fellowship

Price: $20,000 per year

The CINTAS Foundation Fellowship in Architecture is open to applicants with experience in architecture, interior design , urban design, and urban planning.

Architectural award grantees are asked to submit architectural drawings (i.e., representative examples of their work) to be included in the CINTAS Fellows Collection following the grant period to preserve historical significance and documentation. Candidates must be of Cuban descent or have citizenship to be eligible.

Creative individuals with Cuban citizenship or direct ancestry are eligible for this fellowship (having a Cuban parent or grandparent). However, students, performers, and research participants are not eligible to apply for CINTAS Fellowships.

15. Eleanor Allwork Scholarship

Price : Multiple awards of up to $7,500 per year

A prestigious scholarship called the Allwork Scholarship is one of the architecture scholarships given to students who truly need the money. One must be recommended by the chairman or dean of the school they are attending that has been granted NAAB accreditation to be eligible.

16. CIEF Scholarships

Price : Up to $4,000 (10+ awards) per year

Students participating in an architectural bachelor's or master's degree at a NAAB-accredited college are eligible for up to five grants.

17. Houzz Scholarship Program

Price: $2500 per year

Four separate architecture scholarships are available from Houzz for women in architecture, residential design, sustainable residential design, and residential construction management.

In addition, current undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in interior design, landscape architecture, architectural engineering, or construction management programs are eligible to apply for scholarships.

18. Architects Foundation- Payette Sho-Ping Chin Memorial Academic Scholarship

Price : $10,000 per year

This $10,000 grant is given in honor of Sho-Ping Chin, FAIA, who contributed to the national conversation on women in architecture and design. The grant is available to female undergraduate architecture students in their third and fourth years of study and female graduate students at any level enrolled in a NAAB-accredited architecture program.

In addition to receiving a financial award, scholarship applicants are matched with a Payette senior mentor for the duration of their scholarship.

19. Jim Boyce Memorial Scholarship

Price: $2,000 per year

Students pursuing degrees in interior design, civil engineering, landscape architecture, or construction management are eligible for this scholarship. A 2.5 GPA or above and a clear commitment to pursuing a career in these professions are requirements for admission.

20. SmithGroup Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Scholarship Program

Price: $6,000 per year

The SmithGroup Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Scholarship Program was created to assist and mentor students from historically underrepresented groups in architecture, interior design, planning, landscape architecture, and engineering.

The program aims to give these students the chance to achieve their professional objectives while developing the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) sector and enhancing the built environment.

21. Transtutors Scholarships

Price: $1,000 per year

The Transtutors Scholarships are available to any aspiring architecture students in Canada who wish to pursue their studies on a scholarship.

Students who desire to pursue an architecture bachelor's or master's program are eligible for this award.

Despite being a partially funded scholarship, it provides adequate funding to support your program. However, it's also limited to US, Australian, or Canadian university students. Other nationals are not eligible.

22. Alfred T. Granger Student Art Fund Scholarship

Price: $2,000-$5,000; six awards per year

Students who live in Vermont pursuing degrees in architecture, interior design, architectural engineering, mechanical drawing, lighting design, or studio art are eligible for this scholarship. Additionally, students must be enrolled in a recognized institution that is eligible to receive federal funding to qualify for this grant.

Undergraduate and graduate students in Vermont are eligible for this scholarship, but they must show academic excellence and financial need. Each year, there are about 70 applications for this scholarship.

23. Wisconsin Architects Foundation Out-of-State Study Scholarship

Price: $1,000 to $1,500 per year

The Wisconsin Architects Foundation Scholarship is given to deserving Wisconsin students attending a CACB or NAAB-accredited architecture program outside the state.

Candidates must have graduated from a state-certified high school and be enrolled in their first postgraduate or professional degree program.

24. Lila Fahlman Scholarships

Price: $1000 per year

You are eligible for this scholarship if you're a Muslim woman studying abroad in Canada who prefers to study architecture.

Muslim Canadian nationals who desire to study architecture in a Bachelor's, Master's, or Diploma program are the only ones to apply for this award.

Furthermore, the scholarship is partially supported.

25. Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA) Scholarship

Price: $10,000 per year

The University of Guelph sponsors the OALA (Ontario Association of Landscape Architects) Scholarship.

The Master of Landscape Architecture program's third-semester graduates are eligible for this scholarship.

Academic prowess, design studio performance, and leadership contributions are considered when choosing the applicants.

26. Central PA Architects Foundation Fund Architecture Scholarship

Price: $450 for the first year, $550 for the second year, and a $1,000 scholarship for the last year.

The Central Pennsylvania Architecture Scholarship is intended to assist students from Pennsylvania counties that qualify.

You may apply if you are an architectural student from Cumberlan, Adams, Dauphin, Fulton, Franklin, Juniata, Montour, Lancaster, Northumberland, Lebanon, Perry, York, or Snyder.

27. Taylor Randolph’s Annual Academic Scholarship

One of the scholarships available to international students who desire to study architecture in Canada is the Taylor Randolph Annual Academic Scholarship.

Students who desire to pursue an architectural bachelor's or master's program may apply for this scholarship.

Additionally, it is a partially financed fellowship available to US nationals and legal residents of the US.

28. Barbara G. Laurie Scholarship Program

The Barbara G. Laurie Scholarship Program is available for high school graduates in the Columbia District or the surrounding area who want to pursue an architecture degree.

One may apply if one plans to enroll in a technical or community college.

29. Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)- Wren Insurance Association Scholarship

Price: $35,930 per year

To encourage exceptional students who have the potential to contribute to the field of architecture, five scholarships worth £5,000 each are offered. 

The applicant must begin their final year in September 2018 and enroll in the Part 2 professional qualification course in the UK that the RIBA has approved.

30. Fontana Transport Inc. Scholars Program

Underrepresented, low-income, first-generation college-bound students can apply to the Fontana Transport Inc. Scholars Program. Students must be enrolled full-time in undergraduate programs in Spanish language and literature, Pre-Med, math, science, engineering, architecture, or transportation.

The candidate does not need to be a citizen of the United States, but they do need to show they will start college in the fall semester and have a GPA of at least 3.5. Although it is not required, faculty recommendations are strongly advised.

The scholarship is available for applicants who research any topics, though subjects related to the Delaware Valley are preferred. CINTAS Foundation Fellowship in Architecture and Design

            The Foundation covers a wide area of architecture and design, allowing people working in interior design and urban planning to apply for a scholarship. Importantly, candidates should possess Cuban citizenship or be descended from a Cuban ancestor. Before applying for a scholarship, applicants should finish their studies and hold a degree. EPP Undergraduate Scholarship Program

Disclaimer: as i've asked questions in the past to the forum and received so many negative and unhelpful answers please only respond if you have a genuine suggestion. 

I am an architecture student who transferred into the program as an undeclared major. Because of this I now pay almost double the tuition as my other classmates each semester because of state rules. I am applying for a scholarship (one of the only ones my school offers that I am eligible  to apply for) that is a study abroad scholarship. There is a new study abroad program in Paris that is begin offered specifically to our class. So teachers from my program will be having class abroad. 

I have traveled in the past with a family friend who doesnt want to travel alone and takes me along at no expense to me. That is what interested me in architecture in the first place. I visited Paris many years before I became an architecture student. I am interested in living abroad for a semester because I know how valuable those opportunities are. The tuition of the paris trip although nearly double the normal tuition is almost the same as what I would pay anyways. Even though I know the expense of traveling abroad VERY well, I would like to try for the scholarship because any assistance in is helpful. 

My question is what would be a good way to approach my essay for the scholarship given that I have traveled outside the US before. 

I feel like i am at a disadvantage to getting a study abroad scholarship because of my past travel experiences. Because many people already know that I have traveled, I believe it looks like I can afford the trip myself but rather my past travel opportunities have all been because of someone outside of my family that I did not have to pay for. It feels like I am one of the few that falls in the category of not receiving financial aid based on my parents income, because many of my classmates are getting grants (large grants) that are used towards the trip. 

I am just looking for ways to enhance my credibility as a future architecture professional and as opposed to my class mates and many study abroad  programs I am not centered around just the traveling part. 

What you are not telling is what's the stated purpose of the Paris courses, which could give you a good hint for your essay. But a good essay on Paris would be the transformations that took place in the 80s and their later impact in the world of architecture, it's always good to know the ins and outs of history. 

thank you for your reply. The courses in paris are no different than what is being taught in school at home. They are just looking for applying the things we learn to a tangible experience. The scholarship essay is just a statement about why you want to go.

so? why do you want to go?

How do you know this committee knows about your past travel experiences?  I would not mention it, but focus on 1) what makes you unique in needing this scholarship and 2) why the Paris program fits into your future goals.  Honestly, unless the scholarship is need-based, I would leave out any discussion of paying 2x the amount of other students and other money troubles.  Is there a specific topic that the Paris trip deals with that you are particularly interested in?  That would be very helpful.  (For instance, in a past studio maybe you did a project about urban interventions and Paris has a strong history of urban interventions.  Something like that.)

Also, I did a summer session abroad in Paris and it was great! If you go, you'll have a lot of fun!

this sounds interesting. I'm an architectural graduate, and for the past 8 months I've been living off of scholarships from my national Arts Council. I am doing a variety of different pieces of research to explore how I can expand my practice. This is just to say I've sort of gotten my head around what is required.

1. Applying for scholarships requires that you communicate a remarkable level of specificity. It's ALL about this word. I could ask you why you want to go there. But this isn't hugely helpful. The question is WHAT is there that will allow you develop your practice as an architect. You need to identify your focus area of interest, and justify the trip based on its contributions to your practice. Are there particular paintings or sculptures in Paris that you need to study? Certain works by architects? The history of the city's urban design? I don't know what your interests are. But you need to identify them first. Then see how these interests are applicable to time spent in Paris.

2. People. Are there certain people in Paris (or the area) that interest you and are working directly on what you're interested in? Professors or practitioners? You could suggest that you are working on your own research project which you will develop into a research book on your return. Could you meet with these individuals to discuss your specific area of interest, and transcribe the meeting as part of your specific piece of research.

3. The word RESEARCH is key. Short of getting into research methodologies: think about things you can do to develop your area of interest. I've mentioned both existing artefacts in the city and people above. Is there anything else? What about the culture of life in the city of Paris? Is living this culture somehow relevant to embody the the experience of people in that city (to get you closer to understanding their unique perspective): say if you were exploring the paintings of Toulouse Lautrec, would living in Paris for a number of months be a useful way of getting to know the reasoning behind his work better. 

If you want to get the scholarship, take it seriously and frame it as a piece of research. And also you can do it! I agree with you: I do see far too much negativity on these forums towards fellow architects; it's a shame there isn't more of a culture of mentorship and respect in the profession.

If someone comes here in the future looking for info on scholarships, it's still informative. It's always good to check the dates - sometimes the threads are 15+ years old already, so people fall into giving advice to "students" who, if they are students now, are students only because they graduated, got licensed, ran a firm or two into the ground, became thoroughly disillusioned, and retreated to academia again to pursue their new-found passion for criminology, or history of textiles, or textiles in criminology...

I have decided to undertake the Bachelor of Design in Architecture as a means of advancing my education and skills needed for pursing my career in the field of Architecture. The University of Sydney has always intrigued me with their track record of consistently being ranked among the top architecture programs in the country and globally, making it my top choice. In addition, I am also considering The University of Melbourne which has recently risen to the top position in national rankings for its Architecture program. While attending my technical drawing classes in high school, my interests grew for the craft of designing which carried on with me while completing my Diploma in Architectural Drafting at the Fiji National University. Starting my career as a Draftsperson in one of Fiji's more established firms, I realised this is something I have a passion for and would like to equip myself with more knowledge and sharpen my skill set to one day become a Registered Architect. However, to become one, a Bachelor's Degree or higher is required. Fiji, being a developing country does not offer this degree. When conducting my extensive research, the University of Sydney and the University of Melbourne stood out to me as they both provide educational excellence with world-renowned teachers, researchers and high achieving students. Their state of the art facilities also offer a wide range of equipment and learning resources to maximise creativity, critical thinking and practical skills. Both universities also have high graduate employability with global opportunities to study and further excel. Lastly, the diversity of ethnic groups in Australia creates an abundant source of inspiration and knowledge for individuals in a learning environment, making it impossible to restrict oneself to a single perspective. This spring, the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum released a new report on the work of Asian American architects and designers—becoming among the first robust pieces of research on the topic.

The report, Rediscovering Asian American and Pacific Islander Architects and Designers , features five original essays by experts of Asian American art, architecture, and design. Sujin Eom , an assistant professor in the Department of Asian Societies, Cultures, and Languages , co-wrote an essay on Korean American architects and designers with Sean McPherson of Bridgewater State University.

Eom says that her frustration in trying to develop a new course on Asian American art and architecture in 2020 inspired her to contribute to the project.

"I encountered significant challenges in crafting the course syllabus and locating relevant teaching materials," Eom says. "This challenge was primarily due to the paucity of scholarly works and public archives focusing on architects of Asian ancestry. I hadn't even taken or seen any class offered on that subject matter myself when I was an architecture student. I almost gave up on this new course."

Fortuitously, the Smithsonian approached a scholarly working group in 2021 that included Eom about an archiving project centered on Asian American and Pacific Islander architects and designers. The project was inspired in part by the rise in anti-AAPI sentiment and violence during the pandemic, with the aim of showcasing the work of Asian American architects and designers who helped shape the modern U.S. landscape and increase the inclusiveness of the museum's collection.

Eom jumped at the opportunity to begin creating long-overdue archives of AAPI architectural history. She chose to focus on Korean Americans since these architects and their works, she says, are often "marginalized even among the marginalized." 

Eom crafted her essay with the goal of inspiring readers to "rethink what constitutes 'American' architectural history, especially with regards to the significant yet understudied role of architects of Korean descent—who have often been deemed not 'American' enough—in shaping the everyday American landscape."

The essay begins with Eom redefining the term "Asian American" from one that is often used today to "tokenize individuals of Asian ancestry (and) reinforce stereotypical assumptions about what Asian American architecture would entail" to one that's more "relational" to the historical circumstances under which these architects emerged. To that end, she breaks down her selection and analysis of Korean American architects into three categories, each of which "corresponds with the key historical conditions that have shaped the Korean diaspora across the Pacific, from Japanese colonialism and the Korean War to Cold War exchange programs and immigration reform."

Eom's essay also offers suggestions for future research on Korean American architects: "material that has the greatest potential to increase public awareness of the rich history of Korean American architects, and to bring new ideas to research and teaching of American cultural history."

As an example, Eom points to the late David Hyun, the first Korean American architect in California and the founder of his own architectural firm, David Hyun and Associates. "Hyun came to design numerous modernist residences in southern California throughout the 1950s and 1960s, thereby contributing to the flourishing of mid-century modern architecture on the West Coast," Eom says.

One of Hyun's most famous works is the McTernan House, originally built in 1960 in Los Feliz for prominent civil rights attorney John T. McTernan. The two-story house exemplifies characteristics of midcentury modern residential architecture, including elements such as floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors and windows that are meant to integrate exterior gardens into interior spaces.

Eom stresses that future archival efforts should prioritize materials such as the McTernan House, not only because it demonstrates the significance of Hyun's work in shaping modern architecture but also because it "serves as a poignant testament to the Cold War history of Asian Americans, whose lives were deeply affected by the fervor of anti-communism. During the heightened tensions of McCarthyism in the 1950s, Hyun faced multiple deportation hearings due to his involvement in the Communist Party," Eom says, noting that Hyun came to build the McTernan House because the attorney defending him during these hearings had a longstanding legal partnership with McTernan.

"It is even more crucial to collect and acquire such materials at this moment," Eom adds, because unlike American museums and archives, Korean institutions are increasingly interested in collecting and archiving works of Korean American architects. That means that despite Korean Americans' significant contributions to American architecture, their work could be far better represented in Korean museums than in permanent collections in the United States.

"This physical relocation to Korea could pose significant challenges for U.S. scholars, curators, and students in accessing these materials, thereby perpetuating another cycle of neglect in U.S. architectural history," Eom says.

While the new Smithsonian report represents a significant step in establishing these crucial archives in the U.S., it's just the beginning, she says.

As co-chair of the Society of Architectural Historians' American and Diasporic Architectural History Affiliate Group, she helped launch an interdisciplinary working group on AAPI archives this year."

"These initiatives highlight the imperative to build sustainable platforms to recognize and preserve the work of AAPI architects and designers, as well as the urgency of expanding American architectural history," Eom says.

Scholarships offered at UTA open the door to college education

For many, scholarships provide not only a pathway to cheaper tuition, but a definitive road to a college education in general. Although scholarships are available to many prospective and continuing students, only a fraction of students will apply for any.

A 2021 study by Sallie Mae found that 44% of families in the US didn’t use scholarships to help with tuition costs, and 78% of the families that didn’t use scholarships didn’t even apply for them.

“What’s disappointing is, there’s scholarships that go unawarded...,” said Lisa Hooks, University of Texas at Arlington college of Business, Director of Academic Recruiting. “When you look at datasets of incoming freshman and what the university scholarship offer was to them, you see that there's still a large number of students who warrant more support.”

Many of those surveyed by Sallie Mae either didn’t believe they had time to apply or counted themselves out prior to applying for scholarships. Of those who didn’t apply, 20% said it was too much effort to apply, and 44% said they didn’t think they’d be awarded a scholarship.

Though the process of applying for scholarships may seem daunting with essays, GPA requirements, and other stipulations, it all comes down to taking the first step in the application process for the chance to change your college experience. For one UTA College of Business student, it came down to taking the first step in the application process.

“It’s not a hard process. Dedicate one day to looking through applications and another filling them out,” said Brisa Povse, a Sophomore Marketing Major at the University of Texas at Arlington College of Business. “It’s worth trying because it can provide so much that you may not even realize until you get that scholarship.”

Brisa is a recipient of the College of Business Deans Leadership Circle Scholarship and the Maverick Academic Scholarship. Although some apply for partial scholarships to lighten the financial load of attaining a college education, for Brisa, it was imperative for her attendance to UTA.

“My parents pushed me to apply for scholarships. They moved here to give my brother and I opportunities, but they weren’t able to support me financially through school. I knew UTA offered a lot of scholarships, so I got online and began searching.” Brisa explained.

Brisa searched through the scholarships offered at UTA and the College of Business before the DLC Scholarship caught her attention with financial support and networking and leadership opportunities. She explained how quickly she was able to apply for the scholarship.

“I actually ended up applying for the DLC Scholarship on the last day they were accepting applications,” Brisa said. “I needed two recommendations that could speak to my leadership experience, an essay focused on leadership and what I wanted to do with my degree. It’s incredibly simple and not nearly as daunting as many people might expect. It really comes down to you being genuine, showing your true colors and being honest.”

Shortly after applying for the DLC Scholarship, Brisa was notified that she had received the scholarship.

“They literally got back to me a week and a half later. I honestly teared up a little bit and thought ‘there’s no way that I got this’. My mom was sitting next to me, and she was incredibly happy. It took a huge weight off my shoulders and gave me a massive sense of relief. I knew it would let me focus on my studies and organize my schedule better.”

The DLC Scholarship is just one of many scholarships offered at the UTA College of Business, many are geared toward students of various backgrounds, financial situations, and degree types lending themselves to any situation or program type.

For the year 2024-2025 alone, the College of Business has over $435,000 available scholarship funds, including endowed scholarships under the Dean and the Dean’s Leadership Circle. The academic departments also have approximately $165,000 available to award.

Along with financial assistance, many scholarships offered at UTA, and the College of Business create opportunities to network, grow, and even attain internships in various career fields.

“This University and Scholarship has provided so many resources to me to where I’ve gained so much confidence. It’s prepared me socially and academically. I’m way more motivated to apply for more scholarships and continue my education.”

Brisa isn’t alone in her continued application for scholarships to help her succeed in her education; the College of Business recruiting department has seen it repeatedly.

“Once someone gets a scholarship, we’ve seen that they apply for more,” said Lisa. “I’ve been on scholarship committees for a number of years, and you begin to see the same names year after year. The problem we want to solve, is getting other students to apply and know that these scholarships exist.”

Scholarships offer students opportunities to attend school without the burden of high tuition costs or other expenditures. Whether it could cover your entire college education, or a part of it, applying for scholarships can go a long way in keeping you on a path toward your ultimate goals.

“It’s really important to us that we transform lives. It’s why we are here,” said Lisa. “Our student population needs support. Part of the reason I work in higher education is so I can help others find their way. That is having impact, that’s why I and others are here.”
