In the movie, And Your Name Is Jonah (1979), there is a family that is going through some tough times. Jenny and Danny Corelli (Jonah’s parents) are seen walking into an institution to pick up their son, Jonah. There had been some confusion on the diagnosis; it appears that Jonah was diagnosed as mentally retarded.

Jenny kept questioning and questioning if the new diagnosis was in fact correct, and was just dumbfounded. They could not believe that Jonah had been in the institution for three years for being mentally retarded.

They arrived at home where the grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins were throwing a welcome home party. They were just having cake and music was playing in the background and Jonah saw his grandpa dancing and he joined in.

It was pretty apparent when the music went off that he was deaf because he just kept dancing and dancing until they tapped him on the shoulder. After the party, Jenny and Danny were trying to get the family back on track and living normal lives, but little did they know it would be disruptive to the family.

The parents set up an appointment with an audiologist to determine if he was deaf. The audiologist informs the parents that she is not sure if Jonah would benefit from wearing hearing aids, just that the sounds would be amplified but not hearing clear sounds that he never heard before, so he gets hearing aids.

“ KarrieWrites did such a phenomenal job on this assignment! He completed it prior to its deadline and was thorough and informative. ”

The audiologist also recommended speech therapy. Jenny enrolls Jonah into a school but was informed by the supervisor there that they only teach the oral method at this school. Jenny goes along with this and Jonah is now attending the school.

After a while, there seems to be some dysfunction in the family dynamics as the parents are struggling to figure out what to do with Jonah. There was a birthday party for Jonah and Danny; Jonah’s father bought him a bike. As Jonah is riding the bike out in the street, someone is honking at him to move, but Jonah is oblivious to what is going on around him. His parents are frantic and yelling at him to move, and the driver of the car hits Jonah, the accident was not fatal but did scare everyone. Danny and Jenny get into an argument because they do not know how to deal with Jonah’s deafness.

His father is clueless, not sure what he believes or understands what is going on and during the argument he leaves the house. It is now up to Jenny to figure out how to deal with Jonah and living life as a single parent with his younger brother and has applied for welfare. As time progresses, Jenny is trying to help Jonah speak and is having a difficult time with this. And Jonah continues going to school and is struggling during this time. During the movie, you can see that Jonah is attached to grandpa, as he visits him at work at the market.

They always do things together, even though neither one of them know any signs or any form of communication. Grandpa loves him and Jonah loves grandpa. One day, grandpa has a heart attack and passes away. And Jonah is not sure what to make of this, as he does not understand what is going on. Shortly after the death of grandpa, Jonah steals money from mom’s purse and hops on a city bus to go visit grandpa but he is no longer there. After he discovers grandpa is not there, he wanders off and shortly after that the police get a hold of him.

He is taken to a hospital and because he is unable to speak and was acting belligerent they strapped him down. As his mother finds out where he is, she walks into the hospital just in time to see him being strapped down and is devastated; she demands that they release him, as he is just deaf not retarded. But as time goes on, Jenny, Jonah’s mother, is taking him to speech therapy and sees a deaf couple with a deaf child. She goes chasing after them on the sidewalk to find out some information. They inform her that they have a deaf club and she is more than welcome to come and meet other deaf people.

She goes to the deaf club with another parent that has a child that attends the oral school that Jonah goes to. While they are there, Jenny and her friend meet an interpreter that explains what is going on and Jenny stated that teaching the children sign language was a big controversy. But after sitting there with the deaf group, she realizes that sign language is an option for her family as she is learning it herself. After a few days, a deaf friend visits Jenny and her sons in the park, teaching Jonah different signs.

Jonah did not understand at first but after a while he finally got the concept and wants to learn more and more. As they get near a pond, Jonah picks up an empty turtle shell and asks the friend what that was. The man said it was a turtle but it died and shows him the sign for that. Jonah had a flashback to his grandpa dying and now understands this. Jenny has decided to allow Jonah to enter a deaf school so he can learn sign language and be with other kids like him.

The movie that provided examples of the materials that were learned in class was about a deaf child who has a hearing loss. Most likely a sensorineural earing loss but it was never explained how he became deaf in the movie. It really devastated the family to find out that their child was not disabled and had been institutionalized for three years. Jonah had no clue how to communicate with his family and vice versa. At that time, the social worker probably would have done the same thing as everyone else. I am not sure how things would have been handled; although, I believe that they probably were not big advocators in stressing that the parents have the right to choose what is best for their child or they were never assigned a social worker.

I believe that in this day and age, there would be issues on how it was handled. I would ask the family what their understanding of the functioning of the human ear, what happened, what did the previous doctor/audiologist say. As a social worker, I would have advocated that the child needed a proper hearing test, and determine what kind of hearing loss it is or how it happened; for example, was it a disease like German measles or medications that could have caused the deafness in the child. I would ask the parents to tell me their life story, what they can remember or think of in terms of his deafness.

I think also, it would have benefited the family to have counseling support, to help them with their child and themselves. It would have given them more of an idea of what to expect. I would schedule home visits with the family to see how they were interacting with the child and assist them in learning/teaching them sign language if they choose. I would also counsel them on the pros and cons of attending public schools and deaf school. Education wise, it would be better to attend public schools and have deaf education classes in the school.

But attending a deaf school is better for the child socially because they would be around others that are the same; they can communicate and will not feel left out socially. Explain to the parents that the deaf child, Jonah, is just like a hearing child but unable to hear. I would encourage them to attend sign language classes to help them learn to communicate with their child and let him feel as he was part of the family. Allow Jonah to have the freedom to be who he wants to be within reason, if they have strict rules about things, and then they need to follow through with it.

But otherwise, let him have freedom as the hearing child does. As a social worker, I would work closely with the audiologist to determine what type of hearing aid would be best for Jonah and then discuss with the parents, and how they feel about this. As well as the primary doctor, as to keep everyone informed of what was going on in the situation. I would also recommend that Jonah receives speech therapy/lip reading to help him with vocalizations; also discuss if they would consider cochlear implants and explain how it works.

I would encourage the family to apply for Social Security Income (SSI); I can provide information for them if needed. I can explain the different devices they have for the deaf/hearing impaired people. They have closed captioning on televisions to help follow along with the conversations, have flashing lights for doorbells/telephones. They also have Telecommunications Devices for the Deaf (TDD/TTY maching), which helps deaf/hearing people communicate on the phone, and would explain how that works.

They also have vibrating alarm clocks with or without flashing lights to help the deaf people wake up, would also explain how that works. I would also refer them to Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) to apply and receive proper devices, as well as hearing aids for Jonah. I can set up for the family to meet other parents who have a deaf child/children to help them feel better, and they can discuss among themselves how they feel or what they believe and share with each other.

I would need to find out about the family’s health insurance coverage and explain that most insurance companies do not pay for hearing aids, batteries, etc. It would be all out-of-pocket expenses, would also explain that they can refer to DARS for any of these needs and that DARS would help them. If they have any questions or problems with this, they can come see me anytime. I would stress to the family, what they choose for Jonah would be their options, I am there to help them and provide information and to answer any questions they have.

And Your Name Is Jonah Questions

Remembering: And Your Name Is Jonah

This movie came out shortly after american sign language was recognized as an official language in the united states.

And Your Name Is Jonah is a movie made in 1979 about a deaf boy who was mistakenly diagnosed as mentally challenged. He grew up in a hospital until his mother figured out that he was deaf. The movie shows his transition from a childhood in the special needs home to learning language for the first time and being introduced to the Deaf community.

As seen with this depiction of the average American family in the movie, the dangers of a misdiagnosis to a child’s future wellbeing are presented. The main problem at the time and how society failed to address it are presented in the film: no one thought of the possibility that Jonah was deaf, not even the medical professionals and instead locked him up in a mental hospital.

For the first formative years of Jonah’s life, he had no language. This situation rang true for many deaf babies born into uneducated environments with limited access to resources, the United States has come a long way from this with the passing of the ADA law.

However, it is still an ongoing process of educating and awareness. Even today, the film And Your Name Is Jonah still reminds us of the ongoing issues. What we do know is that the rewards, like Jonah finally being able to go to school with his peers at the end, are well worth the fight.

... AND YOUR NAME IS JONAH (TV)

This made-for-television drama film follows the Corelli family and their attempts to connect with their special-needs son. The story begins as Jenny and Danny Corelli hurry to the institution where their young son Jonah, having been misdiagnosed as mentally handicapped when he is in fact deaf, has lived for three years. They happily take their son home, where the rest of the family has arranged a surprise welcome-home party, though Jonah, having never learned language, is naturally confused by all the excitement. An audiologist attempts to test Jonah, though admits that she is unsure about his level of hearing loss and recommends a hearing aid as well as speech therapy. Jonah begins acting out at home, frustrated not to be understood, and Danny is taken aback when Jonah begins wearing a large, unwieldy hearing aid, sure that he will be mocked by other children. Younger son Anthony tries to bond with his big brother through comic books, though Jonah seems unnerved by the Spider-man character. The speech therapist, Mrs. Marquardt, firmly states that deaf children should be forbidden from using sign language and should focus solely on speech and lip-reading in order to function in a hearing world, and Jenny agrees to go along with the plan. Jonah finds happiness in his frequent visits to his grandparents at the Italian market, though Danny is angered when his workmates object to Jonah's presence at their baseball games. Jonah's obstinate behavior at home continues, and Jenny bonds with another mother, Connie, at the speech therapy office. Jenny grows increasingly frustrated by her inability to communicate with her son, who is not taking to his lessons well, and she confides in her grandmother about her doubts and fears for him. When she suggests throwing Jonah a birthday party, Danny comments that Jonah is judged as a "freak show" by others, and Jenny finds that Jonah has placed Anthony's Spider-man doll in the broiler out of a misplaced fear of it. The party seems to go well and Jonah is gifted with a bicycle, though he is nearly hit by a car and Danny furiously confronts their neighbors when they declare that he should not be allowed to play outside. When Jenny chastises him, Danny angrily declares that Jonah is not "normal" and belongs back in the institution. Jenny refuses, saying that the hospital was a cold and lifeless place, and Danny soon leaves the family. Jenny applies for welfare, much to her mother's distress, and continues trying to teach Jonah their names. She observes other parents using sign language and talks with Connie about the conflicting recommendations for educating deaf children, slowly realizing that forcing Jonah to learn speech is not working. Danny sends money to the family but does not return home, and when Jonah's grandfather and "best friend" suddenly drops dead of a heart attack, Jenny frets that she cannot properly console her son for his loss. Jonah soon sneaks out of the house and takes the bus to the Italian market, having not understood that his grandfather is gone, and he is soon found and taken to a hospital by a confused policeman. Jenny arrives and is horrified to see her son in restraints, and she meets up with Danny and describes her feelings of guilt and self-doubt. Danny muses that he now understands Jonah's frustration at being unable to express his complicated feelings, and the couple parts company, seemingly for good. Jenny questions Mrs. Marquardt about Jonah's lack of progress with speech therapy, frustrated when the woman assures her that Jonah will someday be "just like them." In desperation, she pursues the signing couple, Janice and Paul, and attempts to explain her predicament. Janice invites her to a social gathering of deaf adults, and Jenny brings Connie along and converses with several attendees with the help of an interpreter, Kate. Paul and another young man, Woody, happily teach Jenny and Connie some introductory signs, and Janice explains how she chose to stop being offended by others' fear of the deaf and instead decided to help spread awareness and education. Having seen its effectiveness, Jenny informs a disapproving Mrs. Marquardt that she wishes Jonah to learn sign language and intends to learn it herself, declaring that she no longer views his deafness as a "failure" or something to be denied. Jonah spends time with Woody and Kate and quickly begins learning various signs, through which he eventually accepts that his grandfather is gone. Some time later, mother and son have learned to communicate well, and Jonah is excited when he arrives at his new school for the deaf, at which signing is actively taught, and begins to make new friends. • Time Out : When Jonah acts up in class, his teacher makes him stand facing the wall.
  • Why Couldn't You Be Different? : Jenny and Danny are both quite upset at Jonah's difference, with Jenny insisting he must really be normal inside, Danny shouting "He can't hear! He can't talk! He can't think! He can't even live like a human being!" and both trying hard to make him seem as normal as possible. By the end, they've accepted him as he is and started learning sign language.

This movie is a must see for understanding Deaf culture, the role of parents, Deaf mentorship, Deaf clubs, and the history of Deaf education in America.

Still one of my favorite movies, especially the moment it 'clicks' that signs have meaning.

This movie had a great impact on me at age 12. I was excited to see it again and to share it with my students.

Even though it is a very old video, it is still a powerful one.

great movie!

Great film for deaf-culture lessons.

The movie was very successful in relaying the information to parents who have struggled with this situation. Allows an individual to comprehend the difficulties that come along with a misunderstanding with a child who is deaf.

Excellent movie for students wanting to understand about Deaf Culture

This movie provides valuable history of Deaf education.

DCMP is a valuable service providing content relevant to my course work toward developing ASL competency.

I recommend it for educators and Deaf Education, and other related majors students.

Truly classic!

This video is highly recommended for hearing ASL students to have a better understanding about the oppression of sign languages. Highly recommended for Deaf Culture and Deaf History courses. "...And Your Name is Jonah" is about a Deaf boy, born to hearing parents, who did not have access to language and was misdiagnosed as having mental disabilities. Overall this video shows the trials and tribulations of hearing parents of Deaf children who are often misinformed about how to "normalize" their Deaf children. Although this film was made in 1979, this film is a timeless classic.

The kids love this movie- and it is GREAT for motivating discussion!

Great film for discussion!

Use this video every year for my ASL I class.

Worth watching even though it is outdated.

13 Young Men Charged in Brooklyn Synagogue ‘Tunnel’ Melee

Some of the defendants are accused of breaking through a wall between an excavated space and the sanctuary, part of the headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement.

Levi Huebner, dressed in a gray suit, stands in State Supreme Court in Brooklyn, his clients seated behind him.

By Katherine Rosman

Thirteen members of a Hasidic Jewish community were arraigned on Wednesday on charges stemming from a January incident in which a wall inside a famous Brooklyn synagogue was damaged by young men wielding a hammer and crowbar — setting off a melee that was captured on video.

The 13 people, all young men, pleaded not guilty in State Supreme Court in Brooklyn to charges that ranged from criminal mischief to obstructing governmental administration. Another four defendants were absent because they were in Israel, according to their lawyer, Levi Huebner.

Justice Adam Perlmutter ordered the defendants, many of whom are from Israel, to turn over their passports. He denied prosecutors’ request to ban the young men from the synagogue, on Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, which is where they both worship and study.

The synagogue is a part of a complex of buildings that are centered by a gothic revival structure at 770 Eastern Parkway and is the global headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement. Referred to as 770, it is one of the most significant religious sites in New York.

According to Mr. Huebner, most of the defendants came to New York from Israel to study the Torah and the teachings of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, known as the Rebbe.

The Rebbe, who died in 1994, is considered to be the messiah by many in the Lubavitch movement, and during his lifetime he called for the expansion of the synagogue, which is packed sardine-like every day with worshipers from around the world. The squeeze on the Sabbath and Jewish holidays is even more extreme.

In January, after news reports revealed that a space adjacent to the synagogue had been secretly excavated, the building owners called for cement trucks to fill the space. Before they could, some students broke through the wall between the dug-out space and the synagogue, the police said. They appeared in video footage being cheered by fellow students as they were arrested.

“They did it to expand 770 and make it bigger,” a man who gave his name as Zalmy Grossman said in January. “They have come to fulfill the rebbe’s wishes.”

None of the young men charged in the January incident are accused of excavating the passage outside the sanctuary.

City inspectors and the media referred to the excavated space as a “tunnel,” a characterization which many in the Lubavitch movement say maligns and casts unspoken suspicions upon the insular community.

The city’s Buildings Department closed down parts of 770 to investigate the damage and issued two citations for the excavation, which was conducted without proper permits. By the end of the week, the excavated space had been filled with cement, and city inspectors allowed the synagogue to open again.

At the hearing on Wednesday, the indicted men wore traditional Lubavitch dress of dark suits and skullcaps, placing their large black fedoras on their laps as they sat in the courtroom. Most ranged in age from 18 to 21, and few spoke English fluently.

Mendel Gerlitzky, who was arraigned on charges of criminal mischief and reckless endangerment, was raised in Brooklyn and prays at 770 three times a day. While many of his fellow defendants declined to comment, Mr. Gerlitzky did not hesitate to draw attention. On the lapel of his black suit, he wore a pin in the shape of a shovel. It featured a tiny etching of the synagogue and the words “expand 770.”

Mr. Gerlitzky said that the media and law enforcement, emboldened by the Chabad leaders at 770, have exaggerated the impact of the January incident. “The whole story has been blown out of proportion,” he said, adding that many people in the Crown Heights community favor an expansion of 770, even if they do not condone excavations done without permits.

Contacted for comment, Rabbi Motti Seligson, a spokesman for the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, said, “Violence and destruction are anathema to everything the Rebbe taught. We pray that they see the error of their ways.”
