After scoring his biggest hit, Nandamuri Kalyan Ram is back with another concept-oriented film titled Amigos. As Kalyan Ram is playing a triple role, there is a good buzz around the film. Directed by debutant Rajendra Reddy and produced by Mythri Movie Makers, the film has hit the screens today. So let’s see how it is.

Siddharth (Kalyan Ram) who lives in Hyderabad, is fascinated by the concept of doppelgangers (lookalikes). He keeps searching for his lookalikes, and much to his surprise, he finds not one but two of them (Manjunath Hegde & Michael). Soon the three meet and Siddharth takes the help of the other two to make Ishika (Ashika Ranganath) fall for him. When everything is going well, Siddharth and Manjunath get to know the unknown side of Michael, which shocks them. Who is this Michael? What is his backstory? What did Siddharth and Manjunath do after knowing about Michael? The film has the answers.

Plus Points:

From start to finish it is all Kalyan Ram’s show. Kalyan Ram has got a lion’s share of the screen time as he is seen almost in every frame of the film. It isn’t easy to play a triple role but Kalyan Ram has done the job effortlessly. It is important that an actor has to show variations while playing roles of this sort, and Kalyan Ram’s act was nothing short of brilliance. Amigos is undoubtedly one of the best performances by Kalyan Ram. The actor is ruthless as Michael, innocent as Manjunath, and shows subtleness as Siddharth.

The film has a few interesting moments and the proceedings are a bit fast in the second half. A tense atmosphere is nicely created between the antagonist and the protagonist’s family. Scenes that come in this regard are well-knitted and fairly engaging.

The placement of Enno Ratrulosthayi song is good and brings in much-required relief in this seriously driven action drama. Ashika Ranganath makes a decent debut in Tollywood. She looked gorgeous and performed well in her limited role. Brahmaji ably supported Kalyan Ram and he evokes a few laughs. Jaya Prakash is decent.

Minus Points:

The concept of doppelgangers itself is very interesting but the makers didn’t come up with an engaging screenplay More drama could have been created around the film’s core point to elevate the proceedings. But that didn’t happen with Amigos.

There are interesting moments here and there but they are again short-lived. The film’s narrative is middling throughout and the entire first half is boring with slow pacing. The concept is introduced fairly but then the graph dips suddenly and picks up only in the second half. There isn’t anything exciting that happens in the first hour and the interval bang is weak.

There aren’t any twists and turns and the movie becomes predictable after a point in time. The way the NIA is showcased is pretty bad and many times they keep failing to catch hold of a dreadful criminal. This kind of film needs sharp editing and an effective background score but sadly these two aspects were not on the expected lines.

Technical Aspects:

It is surprising to see this kind of inferior work from Ghibran. More care should have been taken regarding the background score to enhance the impact. The cinematography by Soundar Rajan is good and so is the case with production values. The makers didn’t compromise on the quality.

The editing could have been far better and the entire first half needed some heavy corrections. Coming to the debutant director, Rajendra Reddy, he has done an okayish job with the film. He was successful in picking up a fascinating concept and his casting was also perfect. But the issues in writing played a spoilsport. What otherwise could have been a very good thriller ended up being just an okay flick due to the substandard screenplay.

On the whole, Amigos works to an extent and highly benefits from the excellent performance of Kalyan Ram. Ashika, Brahmaji, and others justified their roles. The film actually had more scope but it wasn’t utilized to the full extent. The film has a decent second half and a below-par first half. Hence Amigos ends up being a just okay watch this weekend.

'Amigos' review: Thrills more as an idea than a film

Amigos opens with its climactic scene. We see two bruised Kalyan Rams facing off each other on a dark night. One of them manages to get hold of the gun and shoots the other. The catch here is, we have no clue about the identities of these people. Did the evil Kalyan shoot the good Kalyan or the other way around? We have to sit through—in this case, endure—the whole film to reach there.

The film directed, directed by Rajendra Reddy, has a thrilling idea at its core. Siddharth (he’s the hero of the story, let’s call him the ‘good guy’ for better understanding) is fascinated to find his doppelganger. Before we come to this point, we are fed information about doppelgangers twice—during the opening credits and a painfully verbal exposition by a nameless character played by Sapthagari.

So when Siddharth comes across a website that lets one find their lookalike, he quickly manages to get in touch with two of his doppelgangers and they plan to meet in Goa. One of them is the clean-shaven, formally dressed Manjunath ‘Manju’ Hegde (let us call him the ‘meek guy’) and the other is Michael (he is the ‘bad guy’), who walks into the low-angle frame in slow-mo with a cigar.

The central conflict in the film and about the film is that Siddarth and Manju fail to recognise the fact that Michael is the bad guy. While the good guy and the meek guy remain oblivious to the bad guy’s cruel intentions, the screenplay spends a good chunk of time on a cliched rom-com angle featuring Ashika Ranganath and a puzzle to get to her heart that you know has been planted to spin a comic moment out of the triple role facet.

It’s only at the halfway mark that the other two characters learn the true side of Michael, whom we have known for all the while as a bad guy on a mission that endangers Siddharth and Manjunath. This is perhaps why we barely feel any shock when this reveal drops. And while Kalyan Ram is neat as the good guy and the meek guy, his performance as Michael renders this evil character caricaturish, with a serious voice and a persistent smug expression that screams ‘evil’. What made the actor intimidating in Bimbisara is clearly missing here.

All the issues with Amigos can be traced to its weak and predictable screenplay. For example, the dog coming to the rescue in the climax of HIT 2 works beautifully because this scene has been set up so subtly somewhere in the first act. In Amigos, however, when information is being given out, we can discern that the only purpose of the scene is to set up another moment. Here, a vegetable, yes, you heard that right, is used as a key plot point and we know that this vegetable will serve a purpose later in the film.

Moreover, we barely feel the stakes and the menace of the ‘bad guy’, even when people are killed and important characters are in grave danger because we are never truly invested in them. Siddharth’s father, mother, and sister are as lively as the cardboard stand-ins of the film placed outside the theatre I watched the film in. The mother wants her son to get married, the playful sister pulls pranks on her brother and the father… I don’t even remember; such is the genericness in writing. It is not that the artificiality in writing is restricted to the lighter portions.

Even serious angles in the film are treated in a generic way. We are told that NIA (National Intelligence Agency, I assumed) is after Michael and you cannot help but laugh at their inefficiency. We are informed about the NIA’s arrival with on-screen text that reads, ‘NIA team landed in Hyderabad’ as we see a flight land. In the end, the bad guy is caught, handcuffed and escorted by armed ‘agents’ in a convoy. He manages to destroy the entire convoy single-handedly. While we, as the audience, are willing to suspend our disbelief, I wish they at least tried to make it believable.

One can only imagine the fun this idea about lookalikes could have spawned. From comedy to thrills, the possibilities are endless. Amigos do try, but it leaves you craving the inventiveness the film deserved. Amigos is yet another reminder that having an exciting idea doesn’t suffice. One needs an equally strong screenplay to propel the film as a whole narrative.

Kalyan Ram enjoyed a big success with the fantasy-action film Bimbisara wherein he appeared in a dual role. With a penchant for a variety of concept films, Kalyan Ram came up with yet another film Amigos, and this time he played a triple role based on doppelgangers. The movie was released today. Let us walk into the review.

What Is It About?

Siddharth (Kalyan Ram) is an ordinary young man who learns about doppelgangers and searches if there are any for him. To his surprise, he finds two lookalikes of him, Manjunath (Kalyan Ram), and Michael (also Kalyan Ram). They all meet and become good friends, but one of them meets them with bad intentions. Who is that and what are his plans? How did the other two escape his master plan? The answers to these questions are all about Amigos.

Performances

Kalyan Ram appeared in three roles and he tried his best to show variations from one another. The idea of doppelgangers is having a stark resemblance but not exactly the same. So the director chose to separate them with unique qualities from the way of speaking, mannerisms, and even a ‘tiny’ change in physical appearance, which is apt. Kalyan Ram completely leads the show and he did a perfect job. The heroine Ashika Ranganath and Brahmaji support him when needed. Others are adequate in their respective roles.

Technicalities

Narrating a story with the triple role is challenging. The director has gone for a plain narration most of the time to keep it less complicated and less confusing. The visual effects are good but could have been better to make the three characters’ presence much more lively. The background music is mostly the same throughout the film and it is passable. The remix song ‘Enno Ratrulostayi’ is good. Ashika Ranganath looked ravishing in the song. Cinematography is good.

Romantic track First Half Partly predictable

We have seen umpteen stories of twins or triplets being misplaced when born and later meeting up to fight against a common villain. Amigos has the triple role, but not the routine triplet concept. The director executed an exceptional idea of doppelgangers from different backgrounds meeting in one place.

The first half has the three characters introduced well, but the story slows down with the romantic track and comedy mostly. The actual plot is kept for the second half but the narrative gets sloppy meanwhile. The actual plot takes off with the interval block. The turn in the tale begins only with the interval and it was done well with a series of hints and guesses popping up.

The second half will dive into the baddie’s agenda but only after the introduction of his routine ‘gangsta’ background. The cat-and-mouse game between the trio has some decent twists, but the extreme thrill factor is missing for most of it. The director preferred to narrate it without complexity and confusion, but it left some of the scenes predictable.

The conflict between the protagonist and the evil doppelganger has engaging episodes. The climax action block is well-made. Like any other recent movie, Amigos also has got a cliffhanging twist in the end.

When the concept of doppelgangers is unique, the director could have maintained the freshness by avoiding the formula writing of characters like a normal guy having one innocent, and one ruthless lookalike. At times, the characters remind that of NTR’s Jai Lava Kusa. Also, an elite force like NIA failing to identify a doppelganger is unconvincing.

Overall, Amigos has a different concept and a fresh approach for a protagonist in a triple role. Other than few twists this fails to thrill on the whole.

Bottomline : Good Concept Lacks Thrill

Kalyan Ram's Amigos generated immense interest among movie lovers with the peculiar title. The Spanish title connected chords with the viewers and the teaser and trailer talking about doppelgangers, unheard in the film industry captured the imagination of all. The film directed by Rajendra Reddy is releasing today on 10 February 2023 across the world. Expectations are high as Kalyan Ram is coming after surprising and scoring a hit with his previous outing Bimbisara. The film's OTT rights have been bagged by Netflix and the OTT screening will be done after the completion of its theatrical release. Let us find out what Kalyan Ram offered to viewers with his film Amigos.

Amigos (2023) Movie : Story Review

Amigos movie story is all about three doppelgangers meeting in unexpected circumstances and the twists and turns that follow in their lives after their meeting. The story touches on the doppelganger concept to generate interest among movie lovers. Siddharth (Kalyan Ram), all of a sudden gets interested in the doppelganger concept. He tries to find out his doppelganger and much to his surprise and delight, he finds two in Manjunath (Kalyan Ram), a software engineer in Wpiro, Bengaluru, and Michael (Kalyan Ram) in Goa. They decided to meet in Goa.

They instantly get connected to each other and when everything goes well, NIA starts looking out for a dreaded arms dealer Bipin Roy. Where this leads to, what twists it brings in the lives of Siddharth, Manjunath, and Michael, and how RJ Ishika (Ashika Ranganath) is related to these developments, from the rest of the developments.

Amigos Movie : Artists Review

Kalyan Ram once again showed his penchant for creativity. Kalyan Ram is always known for doing different roles and novel plots and he selected a completely different and unheard plot in Tollywood. Kalyan Ram excelled in all three roles in an effortless manner. Kalyan Ram played the role of the happy-go-lucky guy Siddharth who leads a happy life with his family comprising of his parents and sister and who tries to woo the beautiful girl. He looked as youthful, jovial, and energetic in expressions as Siddharth.

In the role of Manjunath, he played the role of a software engineer who is innocent, honest, timid, and gets carried away by emotions. He showed variations in dialogue delivery and impresses all. In the role of Michael, Kalyan Ram looked menacing, macho, and stylish elevating the scenes to another level. However, compared to Siddharth and Michael, Manjunath's role is very limited. One feels, that Manjunath's role could have been highlighted more.

Ashika Ranganath got limited scope to perform. She looked good on screen and turned red-hot in the song Enno Raatrulu. Brahmaji and Jaya Prakash played the other roles and did their part accordingly.

Amigos Movie : Technicians Review

Amigos Story selected by Rajendra Reddy on debut showed his passion for filmmaking and creativity. He touched upon the concept of doppelgangers and connected chords with the viewers instantly. But there ends all the talk of creativity and novelty. Rajendra Reddy though started the narration by introducing the concept of doppelgangers and then even all three roles to excite movie lovers rather than confuse them, he loses steam when he tried to highlight the romantic angle. The moment the romantic thread comes on screen, the pace in the narration dips, and viewers wait impatiently for the things to happen after the end of the romantic thread. The first half goes on a predictable note and the interval twist though predictable give a break with the lead to the second half.

Things start moving in the second half with all three doppelgangers taking the centre stage. People expected unexpected twists and turn to take them by surprise but everything goes on a predictable note though a lot happens in the second half. The lack of real twists and turns and the missing emotions played spoilsport with the proceedings. The screenplay of Rajendra Reddy is even but has its ups and downs. He however maintained the same pace most of the time. Even the climax is dragged for quite some time with the director ending it with the lead to the Amigos 2.

Ghibran's music is ok. Except for the hit song Enno Raatrlu, other songs do not register. The song is well shot but one gets a feeling that the musical instruments dominated the vocals. His background music is good but at times turned out to be extremely loud. The cinematography of Soundar Rajan is beautiful and rich. He turned the film into a rich capturing the scenic locations in a beautiful manner. Tammi Raju's editing is ok and could have been better especially in the first half as there are many drags. Editing in the second half is ok. Production values of Mythri Movie Makers are average.

Amigos Movie : Rating Analysis

Altogether, Amigos movie promised a lot and expectations soared after Kalyan Ram's success with Bimbisara. The thought of doppelgangers turned out to be mouthwatering for movie lovers. Director Rajendra Reddy created excitement with the doppelganger term, but except for the term, he offered nothing new. Kalyan Ram showed his expertise and proved that he is a versatile actor and with a little bit of fine-tuning of the script, Amigos would have reached another level. Had the doppelganger's characters been improved and touched upon more in detail, doing away with the romantic track and including more twists and turns in the screenplay removing the predictability, Amigos would have become another milestone for Kalyan Ram. Rajendra Reddy being a newcomer missed the golden opportunity. Considering all these aspects, Cinejosh goes with a 2.5 Rating for Amigos.

Amigos review: This tale of lookalikes is bolstered by Kalyanram’s histrionics

Director Rajendra Reddy’s experiment on the concept of doppelgangers would have worked better with a tighter script.

Stories revolving around lookalikes usually end up being about identical twins lost at birth. But Rajendra Reddy’s Amigos is not that kind of clichéd tale of two lookalikes.

The three characters played by Kalyan Ram have nothing in common with how they have been brought up and what they do.

Additionally, one of Kalyan Ram’s characters has a mysterious aura about him. Kalyan Ram showed his penchant for choosing interesting stories with his last one Bimbisara .

In spite of the Rajamouli hangover, Bimbisara still had its own identity in how it dealt with the concept of time travel. There is a cruel and selfish king who ends up straddling two timelines.

Amigos is another different attempt by Kalyanram. Much like Bimbisara , this also lacks perfect storytelling. But still, it is worth your time.

Siddharth is a young man who runs a family business. One day, he is astonished to come across a website about doppelgangers.

On that website, he comes across two of his lookalikes — Manjunath and Michael. They meet up.

After a fun holiday in Goa, they come down to Hyderabad to help Siddharth with his love life.

The love interest here is Ishika (Ashika Ranganath), a girl who wants her husband to have superman qualities.

But things take a drastic turn with the entry of NIA. They are after one of the lookalikes. The rest of the story is about why NIA is hell-bent on catching this guy and how this affects the other two.

What works out and what doesn’t?

Amigos begins off on a slow note. The initial portions feel more like a setup and certain restlessness creeps up.

But things take a turn for the better when Siddharth meets his lookalikes.

The scenes in Goa are fun to watch. Scenes where Manjunath and Michael help Siddharth have their share of amusing moments.

The interval bang when the NIA catches up with one of Kalyanram’s lookalikes raises the stakes for a pulsating second half.

The second half is much better as there is an engrossing cat-and-mouse game between Siddharth and the antagonist. The antagonist is also played by Kalyanram.

Some tension-filled moments make the audience root for Siddharth.

The climax involving the doppelgangers is the biggest highlight of this enterprise. There is a certain joy that the audiences get when Siddharth gets rid of the bad guy.

The big issue with Amigos though is their formulaic nature in terms of the treatment. This is best reflected in the portrayal of NIA.

The NIA comes across as rather incapable on many occasions. On more than one occasion they look like buffoons. A stronger portrayal of NIA would have elevated the antagonist more.

The commercial elements of comedy, romance and action are a hit and a miss; particularly, the romance aspect.

More than the music, it is the background score that elevates the film. Ghibran provides a rousing BGM that adds to the characters, particularly in the scenes of Michael.

The remix of “ Enno Ratrulostayi ” deserves a mention here as it provides some relief.

The performances

Ashika Ranganath is pleasant but her character Ishika’s dreams of wanting a superman husband also come across as rather clichéd.

Amigos is mostly a Kalyanram film as the actor is present in almost all the frames. He is successful in showcasing the variations between the three characters.

He is most effective as the villain who would go to any lengths in his mission.

The actor also deserves appreciation for the distinct voice modulation in this part. His portrayal of Manjunath’s innocence also deserves appreciation.

Bramhaji is the only other actor who stands out. He has a lengthy part and the senior actor does well as expected.

In a nutshell, this tale of doppelgangers will make you curious about finding your lookalikes even though it comes with its own set of dangers.

Amigos Movie Review:  Kalyan Ram, Ashika Ranganath, Brahmaji, Sapthagiri and others starrer Amigos has hit the theaters on 10th February 2023. Let’s see the story of Amigos.

 Story:  The film revolves around the consequences of meeting a lookalikes. Kalyan Ram (Siddharth) searches a website for someone like him. Manju (Kalyan Ram 2) and Michael (Kalyan Ram 3) introduce in this sequence. Three meet. Who is Michael?, Why does he target Siddharth? What is the  backstory? What do Siddharth and Manjunath do after knowing about Michael? To get these answers, one should watch the movie on silver screen.

Performance:  Kalyan Ram acts brilliantly in three roles in this action thriller Amigos which is different from Nandamuri hero’ previous films. Kalyan Ram impresses everyone with his stylish looks and his action. Especially Kalyan Ram’s performance as Michael is the highlight of the movie Amigos. He  is ruthless as Michael, innocent as Manjunath, and shows subtleness as Siddharth. Ashika Ranganath, who made her debut with the film Amigos, looks good on the screen but she doesn’t have a lot to do. Brahmaji and Saptagiri are fine in their roles. The rest of the supporting cast performs accordingly.

Technical:  The main story is written by director Rajendra Reddy. The action scenes in the climax and the chase scenes in the climax are very impressive. Coming to the music, the BGM is good. The cinematographer’s work is the main strength of this movie. Every frame is shot very effectively. Editing is good. The production values of the movie are also very good.

Analysis:  Kalyan Ram impresses with his stylish acting and his variations in acting in Amigos, which  has an interesting premise of doppelgangers meeting up, However, the weaknesses of the movie are the lack of logic in many key scenes, slow narration in some scenes, and poor screenplay in the second half. Kalyan Ram’s performance and some action elements connect with the audience.

Amigos starring Nandamuri Kalyan Ram in a triple role under the direction of Rajendra Reddy has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it fares.

Story: As showcased in the trailer, Amigos revolves around the doppelganger concept. After a brief introduction of Siddharth, he crosses paths with Bengaluru-based Manjunath Hegde and Michael from Kolkata. How does friendship develop between the three lookalikes? At one point, Bipin Roy’s character will be introduced as a ruthless person. Who is Bipin? What is his backstory? How will the proceedings affect the bondage between three doppelgangers, forms crucial crux.

Performances: Kalyan Ram gave an impressive performance in the triple role. He managed to showcase good variants between the three roles. His makeover for three roles adds authentic texture to the proceedings. The amount of hard work he put into the film is clearly visible on screen.

Kalyan Ram’s acting in a negatively shaded character named Michael is good and brings depth to the proceedings. As most of the film runs between three lookalike doppelgangers, the film has very limited scope for other artists.

Heroine Ashika Ranganath is glamorous on screen. Her chemistry with Kalyan Ram is presented nicely. Enno Ratrulosthayi song on the lead pair is canned well. Actor Brahmaji is okay in his role as the hero’s uncle.

Technicalities: The photography work by Sundar Rajan is a major asset for the film. His framing and lighting setup add a colorful vibe to the screen. Editing by Thammiraju is adequate.

Ghibran’s music is okay at parts. While his score is racy for Michael aka Bipin Roy’s scenes, for the rest of the part the background score looks dull.

Production values for this stylish actioner by Mythri Movie Makers banner are rich. The production design work is also done neatly.

Analysis: Written and directed by Rajendra Reddy, Amigos has a fresh storyline related to doppelgangers. He tried to present Kalyan Ram in a different manner in the three lookalikes’ roles. The director made sure to narrate the film without no-nonsense episodes but most of the first half scenes look dragged. The emotional bonding between the three lookalikes is also not showcased in an impactful manner.

On the other hand, though the screenplay is gripping in the second half, the director would have worked more on projecting the key scenes with even more effective treatment. To summarize, Amigos is a doppelgangers crime thriller that has a few engaging moments in the second half. Despite uneven portions here and there and predictable twists towards the end, the film will end up as a watchable fare this weekend

Verdict: Kalyan Ram’s show!

Amigos Movie Review: Thrills more as an idea than a film

Amigos  opens with its climactic scene. We see two bruised Kalyan Rams facing off each other on a dark night. One of them manages to get hold of the gun and shoots the other. The catch here is, we have no clue about the identities of these people. Did the evil Kalyan shoot the good Kalyan or the other way around? We have to sit through—in this case, endure—the whole film to reach there.

Director: Rajender Reddy

The film directed, directed by Rajender Reddy, has a thrilling idea at its core. Siddharth (he’s the hero of the story, let’s call him the ‘good guy’ for better understanding) is fascinated to find his doppelganger. Before we come to this point, we are fed information about doppelgangers twice—during the opening credits and a painfully verbal exposition by a nameless character played by Sapthagari. So when Siddharth comes across a website that lets one find their lookalike, he quickly manages to get in touch with two of his doppelgangers and they plan to meet in Goa. One of them is the clean-shaven, formally dressed Manjunath Hegde (let us call him the ‘meek guy’) and the other is Michael (he is the ‘bad guy’), who walks into the low-angle frame in slow-mo with a cigar. The central conflict in the film and about the film is that Siddarth and Manju fail to recognise the fact that Michael is the bad guy. While the good guy and the meek guy remain oblivious to the bad guy’s cruel intentions, the screenplay spends a good chunk of time on a cliched rom-com angle featuring Ashika Ranganath and a puzzle to get to her heart that you know has been planted to spin a comic moment out of the triple role facet.

It’s only at the halfway mark that the other two characters learn the true side of Michael, whom we have known for all the while as a bad guy on a mission that endangers Siddharth and Manjunath. This is perhaps why we barely feel any shock when this reveal drops. And while Kalyan Ram is neat as the good guy and the meek guy, his performance as Michael renders this evil character caricaturish, with a serious voice and a persistent smug expression that screams ‘evil’. What made the actor intimidating in  Bimbisara  is clearly missing here.

All the issues with Amigos can be traced to its weak and predictable screenplay. For example, the dog coming to the rescue in the climax of  HIT 2  works beautifully because this scene has been set up so subtly somewhere in the first act. In  Amigos , however, when information is being given out, we can discern that the only purpose of the scene is to set up another moment, robbing us of the surprise and joy we might have experienced when this lands. Here, a vegetable, yes, you heard that right, is used as a key plot point and we know that this vegetable will serve a purpose later in the film. 

Moreover, we barely feel the stakes and the menace of the ‘bad guy’, even when people are killed and important characters are in grave danger because we are never truly invested in them. Sidharth’s father, mother, and sister are as lively as the cardboard stand-ins of the film placed outside the theatre I watched the film in. The mother wants her son to get married, the playful sister pulls pranks on her brother and the father… I don’t even remember; such is the genericness in writing. It is not that the artificiality in writing is restricted to the lighter portions. Even serious angles in the film are treated in a generic way. We are told that NIA (National Intelligence Agency, I assumed) is after Michael and you cannot help but laugh at their inefficiency. In the climax, the bad guy is caught, handcuffed and escorted by armed ‘agents’ in a convoy. He manages to destroy the entire convoy single-handedly. While we, as the audience, are willing to suspend our disbelief, I wish they at least tried to make it believable.

One can only imagine the fun this idea about lookalikes could have spawned. From comedy to thrills, the possibilities are endless. It is not that  Amigos  doesn't try, just that it leaves you craving the inventiveness the film truly deserved. Films like  Amigos  are reminders that having an exciting idea doesn’t suffice. One needs an equally strong screenplay to propel the film as a whole narrative.

నందమూరి కళ్యాణ్ రామ్ (Nandamuri Kalyan Ram) త్రిపాత్రాభినయం చేసిన సినిమా 'అమిగోస్' (Amigos Telugu Movie). 'బింబిసార' విజయం తర్వాత ఆయన నుంచి వస్తున్న చిత్రమిది. బాక్సాఫీస్ బరిలో సంక్రాంతికి 'వీర సింహా రెడ్డి', 'వాల్తేరు వీరయ్య' సినిమాలతో విజయాలు నమోదు చేసిన మైత్రీ మూవీ మేకర్స్ సంస్థ నుంచి వస్తున్న తాజా చిత్రమిది. మూడు పాత్రల్లో కళ్యాణ్ రామ్ ఎలా చేశారు? సినిమా ఎలా ఉంది (Amigos Review )?

కథ (Amigos Movie Story) : సిద్ధార్థ్ (నందమూరి కళ్యాణ్ రామ్) హైదరాబాద్ యువకుడు. తమ ఫ్యామిలీ బిజినెస్ చూసుకుంటాడు. ఇషిక (ఆషికా రంగనాథ్) మీద మనసు పారేసుకున్నాడు. ప్రేమించిన అమ్మాయిని పెళ్ళాడాలని ప్రయత్నాలు చేస్తాడు. ఓ వెబ్సైట్ ద్వారా తనలాంటి మరో ఇద్దరు వ్యక్తులు... బిపిన్ రాయ్ అలియాస్ మైఖేల్, మంజునాథ్ హెగ్డేలను సిద్ధార్థ్ కలుస్తాడు. ముగ్గురూ క్లోజ్ అవుతారు. బెంగళూరు వెళ్లాలని మంజునాథ్, కలకత్తా వెళ్లాలని మైఖేల్... ఎవరి ఊరికి వారు బయలు దేరతారు. అంతకు ముందు హైదరాబాదులో ఎన్ఐఏ అధికారిని బిపిన్ అలియాస్ మైఖేల్ చంపేస్తాడు. ఆ మర్డర్ కేసు నుంచి తాను తప్పించుకుని సిద్ధార్థ్ అరెస్ట్ అయ్యేలా ప్లాన్ చేస్తాడు. బిపిన్ అనుకుని ఎన్ఐఏ ఎవరిని అరెస్ట్ చేసింది? ఆ తర్వాత ఏమైంది? నరరూప రాక్షసుడు లాంటి బిపిన్ వేసిన అసలు ప్లాన్ ఏంటి? అతడి నుంచి సిద్ధార్థ్, మంజునాథ్ తప్పించుకున్నారా? లేదా? అనేది మిగతా సినిమా. 

విశ్లేషణ : 'బింబిసార' తర్వాత కళ్యాణ్ రామ్ నటించిన సినిమా కావడంతో 'అమిగోస్' మీద అంచనాలు ఏర్పడ్డాయి. అందులో నెగిటివ్ షేడ్ రోల్ చేస్తే, ఇందులో ఏకంగా విలన్ రోల్ చేశారు. అది హిస్టారికల్ అయితే... ఇది మోడ్రన్ మాఫియా బ్యాక్‌డ్రాప్. ట్రైలర్‌లో దర్శకుడు రాజేంద్ర రెడ్డి చాలా హింట్స్ ఇచ్చేశారు. సినిమాలో ఆ సస్పెన్స్ ఎలా మైంటైన్ చేశారు? అనేది చూస్తే... 

'అమిగోస్'లో కళ్యాణ్ రామ్ మూడు రోల్స్ చేశారు. అందులో ఒకరు విలన్. ముందు మిగతా ఇద్దరితో స్నేహం చేసి... ఆ తర్వాత వాళ్ళను చంపాలని చూస్తారు. ట్రైలర్ చూస్తే ఈ సంగతి అర్థం అవుతుంది. ట్విస్ట్ ఏంటనేది ముందు చెప్పినప్పుడు... స్టార్టింగ్ టు ఎండింగ్ ఎంగేజ్ చేసేలా సినిమా ఉండాలి. 'అమిగోస్'లో ఆ విధంగా క్యూరియాసిటీ కలిగించే సన్నివేశం ఒక్కటంటే ఒక్కటి కూడా ఉండదు. ప్రేమ కథ మరీ వీక్. హీరోయిన్ చెప్పే థియరీ రిపీట్ చేసి విసిగించారు. ఇంటర్వెల్ తర్వాత యాక్షన్ మోడ్ మొదలై, ఆసక్తిగా ఉంటుందని అనుకుంటే... అక్కడ సాగదీత సహనానికి పరీక్ష పెడుతుంది. దర్శకుడు సెలెక్ట్ చేసుకున్న కాన్సెప్ట్ బావుంది. కానీ, ఎగ్జిక్యూషన్ ఫెయిల్ అయ్యింది. థియేటర్లలో ప్రేక్షకుడు క్యారెక్టర్లతో కనెక్ట్ అయ్యేలా ఎమోషనల్ సీన్స్ లేవు. ఉన్నవి సోసోగా ఉన్నాయి.  

'ఎన్నో రాత్రులొస్తాయి గానీ...' సాంగ్ రీమిక్స్ వినడానికి, స్క్రీన్ మీద చూడటానికి బావుంది. జిబ్రాన్ నేపథ్య సంగీతం ఇంటర్వెల్ తర్వాత కొంత ఇంపాక్ట్ చూపించింది. సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ, నిర్మాణ విలువలు ఓకే.  

నటీనటులు ఎలా చేశారంటే? : యాక్టింగ్ & యాటిట్యూడ్ పరంగా మూడు పాత్రల్లో కళ్యాణ్ రామ్ వేరియేషన్ చూపించారు. నెగెటివ్ షేడ్స్ ఉన్న బిపిన్ రాయ్ / మైఖేల్ పాత్రలో నటన, వాయిస్ మాడ్యులేషన్ ఆకట్టుకుంటాయి. కళ్యాణ్ రామ్ తన వరకు న్యాయం చేశారు. ఆషికా రంగనాథ్ స్క్రీన్ ప్రజెన్స్ బావుంది. అమ్మాయి ముఖం కళగా ఉంది. కానీ, నటిగా తన ప్రతిభ చూపించే అవకాశం ఆమెకు రాలేదు. జస్ట్ గ్లామర్ డాల్ రోల్ అంతే! బ్రహ్మాజీ, సప్తగిరికి నవ్వించే అవకాశం దర్శకుడు ఇవ్వలేదు. మిగతా నటీనటులు తమ పాత్రల పరిధి మేరకు చేశారు.

చివరగా చెప్పేది ఏంటంటే? : కళ్యాణ్ రామ్ ట్రిపుల్ రోల్, కాన్సెప్ట్ క్రియేట్ చేసిన క్యూరియాసిటీ... సినిమాలో కంటిన్యూ కాలేదు. ఓ పాట, కొన్ని సీన్స్ బావున్నాయి. అయితే, స్టార్టింగ్ టు ఎండింగ్ 'నెక్స్ట్ సీన్‌కు త్వరగా రా' అనేలా ఉంది. కళ్యాణ్ రామ్ సిన్సియర్ ఎఫర్ట్ పెట్టినా... ఆయన నటన బావున్నా... సినిమాను నిలబెట్టడం కష్టమే.

In the wake of Bimbisara's massive success, Kalyan Ram's movies became all the rage. The trailer for "Amigos" has piqued interest thanks to the intriguing premise of a doppelganger.

Let's find out its merits and demerits.

Story Siddharth (played by Kalyan Ram) is immediately smitten with Ishika (played by Ashika Ranganath), a radio host. After Siddharth's family contacts Ishika's family, a "pelli choopulu" (meeting of the families) is arranged. Despite this, Ishika turns down Siddharth's proposal because she would only consider marrying a man if he passes a test she created.

Meanwhile, Siddharth learns of a website that tracks down doppelgangers and, after searching for his own lookalike, he discovers not one, but two people who are strikingly similar to him: Michael from Kolkata and Manjunath from Bengaluru. In an effort to pass Ishika's test, Siddharth approaches them for help.

However, Siddharth does not realize until later that Michael is impersonating him. This raises the question: why is Michael posing as Siddharth? What is his sinister plan?

Artistes’ Performances: In his last film, Bimbisara, Kalyan Ram played two distinct roles. He goes one step further and gets to play three different characters here. There isn't much to say about his two positive roles, Siddharth and Manjunath, but he shines as the negative character Michael. Throughout the film, we only see Kalyan Ram, and he carries the film.

Ashika Ranganath's Telugu debut is adequate.

Brahmaji as Kalyan Ram’s uncle provides some laughs. JP as Kalyan Ram’s father gets some scenes worth noting.

Technical Excellence: The cinematography is impressive. There are two songs, one is the remix of “Enno Ratrulostayigani”. Background score is very bad.

Highlights: The concept of three lookalikes

Analysis Regardless of the outcome of his efforts, Nandamuri Kalyan Ram never stops trying to surprise and delight his fans. Last year, his attempt to play an evil king in the time-travel thriller "Bimbisara" was a massive success. This time, he utilized the doppelganger concept to play three different characters.

The concept of "lookalikes" has existed for a while, and the Telugu film industry has been attempting to tell such stories since at least the days when Kalyan Ram's grandfather played a dual role in "Ramudu Bheemudu." However, the new director, Rajendra Reddy, brings a fresh take to this by incorporating the use of the Internet to find one's doppelganger.

The premise of the film appears promising. Despite the hero playing three similar roles, the screenplay is clear, and the director has been successful in explaining the concept of doppelgangers meeting through a website in the first half of the film, which is primarily devoted to the main character's love story.

However, the film lacks thrilling moments. The main plot twist appears in the second half of the film, but it fails to generate any excitement. The proceedings are not engaging. When the story reaches its main point, it becomes even more apparent that there are many logical problems. This is another Telugu film that portrays NIA officers as a group of buffoons.

With the exception of Michael, Kalyan Ram did not put much effort into portraying the other two characters, and they are also dull. The film feels repetitive as Kalyan Ram appears as one or more characters 90% of the time.

Overall, the film has only an intriguing premise going for it, but it offers nothing more. The narration is mostly dull and the film drags on for too long.

Bottom line: Not Exciting

Amigos Review – A Good Concept but Patchy film!

Story: AMIGOS is about three lookalike persons who are not biologically related. Siddarth(Kalyan Ram)finds two of his doppelgangers Manjunath and Michael through a website. All three meet in Goa and soon become friends. Michael has a shady background, which pushes everyone into trouble. Rest of the story has many twists and turns between the three characters

Director Rajendra Reddy takes no time to get into the main story, which has interesting beginning. AMIGOS kind of stories are not attempted much on the Telugu screen. Hero villain friendship etc. elements are attempted between only the three main characters. The NIA (National Investigation Agency) chases down Bipin Roy who is the biggest gun dealer in the country. Siddhu( Kalyan Ram) likes RJ Ishika (AshikaRanganath) and takes family route to propose her. The love track runs only few minutes until the story opens into the main plot. Ekka Ekka song is good on screen. First half the film is just one hour in duration, sets the premise of the film. There is one commercial song ‘ EnnoRatrulostaayigaani..’ in the second half which is a remix of NBK’s hit song from Dharmakshetram. The real story is in second half, which connects all the dots as well as have lot of turns in the plot. However, one flipside is some of the turns are predictable. One of the NIA officers colluding with the villain does not make much sense. Production values by Mythri Movie Makers are adequate. Given the Bipin Roy’s arms (illegal) dealer profile, couple of action blocks would have helped the film commercially

Performances:

Kalyan Ram performance is impactful as Michael, acted with ease in other two roles. The script is totally rely on the three characters and Kalyan ram pulls it off. Akshita is cute and adequate for the role. Brahmaji as Siddhu’s mama plays significant role.

Technicians:

Director Rajendra has packed the film tightly but missed to infuse high moments. Though he added surprise turns, they are not smart enough to impress the audience. SoundarRajan’s cinematography is excellent. The three characters in single frame scenes came out well. Ghibran’s background score is impressive at times, annoying few occasions.

Positives :

• Kalyan Ram in triple role, his performance
• Unique story plot
• Tight screenplay
• No High elevation scenes
• Some predictable twists
• Patchy climax

Kalyanram’s script selection is once again good.’Amigos’ film is an engaging thriller, a different kind of experience for Telugu audience. Director is able to handle the complex triple role script without any confusion to the audience. Overall, Amigos is a no regret one-time watch.
