సమంత ప్రధాన పాత్రలో వచ్చిన చిత్రం యశోద. హరి హరీష్ దర్శకత్వంలో తెరకెక్కిన ఈ మూవీకి మణిశర్మ సంగీతం అందించారు. నేడు రిలీజ్ అయిన ఈ చిత్రం ప్రేక్షకులను ఏ స్థాయిలో ఆకట్టుకుందో సమీక్షలోకి వెళ్లి తెలుసుకుందాం.

సమంత (యశోద) తన చెల్లి ఆపరేషన్ కోసం సరోగసికి ఒప్పుకుంటుంది. ఆర్ధిక ఇబ్బందులతో ఇబ్బందులు పడుతున్న పేద అమ్మాయిలకు డబ్బు ఆశ చూపించి సరోగసి తల్లిగా మారడానికి మధు (వరలక్ష్మి శరత్ కుమార్ ) అండ్ గౌతమ్ (ఉన్ని ముకుందన్) ఒప్పిస్తారు. ఈ క్రమంలోనే యశోద కూడా బిడ్డను కని ఇవ్వడానికి ఒప్పుకుంటుంది. అయితే, దీని వెనుక ఏదో కుట్ర ఉంది అని యశోదకు అర్థం అవుతుంది. సరోగసి పేరుతో జరుగుతున్న అకృత్యాలు ఏమిటి ? అని తెలుసుకోవడానికి యశోద ఏం చేసింది ?, అసలు యశోద ఎవరు?, ఎందుకు ఇదంతా చేస్తోంది?, చివరకు సరోగసి పేరు మీద జరుగుతున్న అక్రమ వ్యాపారాన్ని ఎలా అరికట్టింది ? అనేది మిగిలిన కథ.

ప్లస్ పాయింట్స్ :

ఈ చిత్రంలో యశోద పాత్ర‌లో నటించిన సమంత తన టెర్రిఫిక్ పెర్ఫార్మెన్స్ తో ఆకట్టుకుంది. తన పాత్రకు తగ్గట్టు వేరియేషన్స్ చూపిస్తూ చాలా బాగా నటించింది. ఫస్ట్ హాఫ్ లో అమాయక యువతిగా.. సెకండ్ హాఫ్ లో అగ్రెసీవ్ బాడీ లాంగ్వేజ్, డామినేట్ చేసే ఆమె యాక్షన్.. ఆమె పాత్రకు ఫర్ఫెక్ట్ గా సరిపోయాయి. పైగా చిన్న చిన్న ఎక్స్ ప్రెషన్స్ తోనే సమంత కొన్ని భావోద్వేగ సన్నివేశాలను చాలా చక్కగా పడించింది.

ఇక విలన్ పాత్రలో కనిపించిన ఉన్ని ముకుందన్ తన పాత్రకు తగ్గట్లే తన లుక్స్ ను తన ఫిజిక్ ను చాలా బాగా మార్చుకున్నాడు. అలాగే మరో ప్రధాన పాత్రలో నటించిన వరలక్ష్మి శరత్ కుమార్ తన నటనతో ఆకట్టుకుంటూ తన పాత్రకు పూర్తి న్యాయం చేస్తూ ఈ చిత్రానికి స్పెషల్ ఎట్రాక్షన్ లా నిలిచింది.

రావు రమేష్, మురళీ శర్మ, సంపత్ రాజ్, శత్రు తమ నటనతో మెప్పించారు. అలాగే మిగిలిన నటీనటులు కూడా తమ పాత్రలకు పూర్తి న్యాయం చేశారు. దర్శకులు హరి – హరీష్ రాసిన ఈ చిత్ర కథ కూడా బాగుంది. సినిమాలోని కొన్ని సంఘటనలు సమాజంలో జరుగుతున్న కొన్ని అక్రమాలను ఎత్తి చూపాయి.

మైనస్ పాయింట్స్ :

వైవిధ్యమైన పాయింట్ తో దర్శకులు హరి – హరీష్ ఈ కథను రాసుకున్నప్పటికీ ఆసక్తికరమైన కథనంతో సినిమాని పూర్తి స్థాయిలో ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ గా మలచలేకపోయారు. అక్కడక్కడ స్లోగా నడిచే సన్నివేశాలు కారణంగా ఈ సినిమా కొంత స్లో అనిపిస్తోంది. ముఖ్యంగా ఫస్ట్ హాఫ్ లో కొన్ని సీన్స్ బోర్ గా సాగాయి.

పోలీసులు ఇన్విస్టిగేట్ చేసే క్రమం పెరిగే కొద్ది చాలా ఆసక్తికరంగా ఉత్కంఠభరితంగా ఉండాలి. కానీ ఈ చిత్రంలో చాలా తేలికపాటి ఇన్విస్టిగేషన్ తోనే ముగించడం అంతగా రుచించదు. అలాగే చాలా సీన్స్ లాజిక్ లెస్ గా సాగుతాయి. పైగా కొన్ని కీలక సీన్స్ ను చాలా సింపుల్ గా ఎండ్ చేశారు.

సాంకేతిక విభాగం :

  దర్శకులు ఓ మంచి స్టోరీ ఐడియా తీసుకున్నారు గాని, ఆ ఐడియాకు తగ్గట్టు అంతే కొత్తగా ట్రీట్మెంట్ మాత్రం రాసుకోలేదు. సినిమాలో సప్సెన్స్ ఇంట్రస్ట్ పెంచే స్కోప్ ఉన్నప్పటికీ ఫస్ట్ హాఫ్ ని సింపుల్ గా హ్యాండిల్ చేశారు. మ్యూజిక్ విష‌యానికి వ‌స్తే… మణిశర్మ అందించిన సంగీతం బాగుంది. ముఖ్యంగా నేపధ్య సంగీతం చాలా బాగా ఆకట్టుకుంది. సినిమాటోగ్రఫర్ పనితనం బాగుంది. సినిమా మూడ్ కి అనుగుణంగా దృశ్యాలని తెరకెక్కించారు. ఎడిటింగ్ బాగున్నప్పటికీ కథకు అవసరం లేని సీన్స్ ను ట్రీమ్ చేసి ఉంటే బాగుండేది. ఇక సినిమాలోని నిర్మాత పాటించిన ప్రొడక్షన్ వాల్యూస్ కూడా చాలా బాగున్నాయి.

ముందు చెప్పుకున్నట్లు ఓ సోషల్ ఇష్యూకి సంబంధించి చాలా ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ థీమ్ తీసుకున్నారు. అలాగే ఈ ఫీల్ గుడ్ ఎమోషనల్ డ్రామాలో గుడ్ ఎమోషన్స్, బెటర్ స్క్రిప్ట్, మరియు బెస్ట్ ఫీల్ ఉంది. అలాగే సమంత నటన ఈ సినిమాకే మెయిన్ హైలైట్ గా నిలుస్తోంది. అయితే స్క్రీన్ ప్లే లో స్లో నెరేషన్, కొన్ని సన్నివేశాలు పూర్తి స్థాయిలో ఆకట్టుకునే విధంగా లేకపోవడం వంటి అంశాలు సినిమాకి మైనస్ అయ్యాయి. కానీ, సినిమాలో కంటెంట్ అండ్ ట్రీట్మెంట్ బాగుంది. మొత్తమ్మీద ఈ చిత్రం మెప్పిస్తోంది.

య‌శోద (స‌మంత) మ‌ధ్య త‌ర‌గ‌తి కుటుంబానికి చెందిన అమ్మాయి. ఆర్థిక అవ‌స‌రాల రీత్యా స‌రోగ‌సి ప‌ద్ధ‌తిలో బిడ్డ‌కి జ‌న్మ‌నివ్వ‌డం కోసం డా.మ‌ధు (వ‌ర‌ల‌క్ష్మి శ‌రత్‌కుమార్‌)కి చెందిన ఈవా ఆస్ప‌త్రిలో చేరుతుంది. ఒక ప్ర‌త్యేక ప్ర‌పంచంలా అనిపించే ఈవాలో జ‌రిగే కొన్ని ప‌రిణామాలు య‌శోద‌లో అనుమానం రేకెత్తిస్తాయి. త‌న‌తోపాటు బిడ్డ‌ల‌కి జ‌న్మ‌నివ్వ‌డం కోసం ఆస్ప‌త్రిలో చేరిన తోటి మ‌హిళ‌లు అనుమానాస్ప‌ద రీతిలో క‌నుమ‌రుగైపోతుంటారు. ఇంత‌కీ ఆ మ‌హిళ‌లు ఏమ‌వుతున్నారు? య‌శోద త‌న అనుమానాల్ని నివృత్తి చేసుకోవ‌డం కోసం ఏం చేసింది? ఆ  ఆ క్ర‌మంలో ఆమెకి ఎలాంటి విష‌యాలు తెలిశాయి? ఇంత‌కీ ఈ మ‌ధు ఎవ‌రు? ఈ ఆస్ప‌త్రిలో సంఘ‌ట‌న‌ల‌కీ, బ‌య‌ట జ‌రిగిన మ‌రో రెండు హ‌త్య‌ల‌కీ సంబంధమేమిటనేది మిగతా క‌థ‌.

ఎలా ఉందంటే?

స‌రోగసి నేప‌థ్యంలో సాగే మెడిక‌ల్ మాఫియా క‌థ ఇది. వాస్త‌వ సంఘ‌ట‌న‌ల ఆధారంగా హ‌రి - హ‌రీష్ ద‌ర్శ‌క‌ద్వ‌యం తెర‌కెక్కించింది.  క‌థ సాగే నేప‌థ్యం, మ‌న‌సుల్ని తాకే భావోద్వేగాలు, స‌మంత న‌ట‌న సినిమాకి హైలైట్‌గా నిలిచాయి. గ‌ర్భ‌ధార‌ణ కోసం ఆస్ప‌త్రిలో చేర‌డం, ఈవాలో సాగే ఆరంభ స‌న్నివేశాల‌తో  ప్రేక్ష‌కుడు నేరుగా య‌శోద ప్ర‌పంచంలోకి వెళ‌తాడు. అక్క‌డ అనుమానాస్ప‌దంగా అనిపించే విష‌యాల‌తో ప్రేక్ష‌కుడిని థ్రిల్ చేస్తూ క‌థ‌ని మ‌రింత ర‌క్తి క‌ట్టించ‌డంలో ద‌ర్శ‌కులు స‌ఫ‌ల‌మ‌య్యారు. స‌రోగ‌సి పేరుతో జ‌రిగే నేరం చుట్టూ సాగే క‌థ అనే విష‌యం అర్థ‌మ‌వుతున్న‌ప్ప‌టికీ... ఉత్కంఠ రేకెత్తించే స‌న్నివేశాల‌తో  త‌ర్వాత  ఏం జ‌రుగుతుంద‌నే ఆస‌క్తి మాత్రం కొన‌సాగుతుంది. మాతృత్వం చుట్టూ సాగే స‌న్నివేశాలు, అద్దె గ‌ర్భం కోసం వ‌చ్చిన కొద్దిమంది యువ‌తుల జీవిత నేప‌థ్యాలతో భావోద్వేగాలు పండ‌డం ప్ర‌థ‌మార్ధానికి మ‌రింత‌గా క‌లిసొచ్చింది.

ద్వితీయార్ధంలోనే అస‌లు క‌థ‌. సాధార‌ణంగా నేర ప‌రిశోధ‌న జ‌రుగుతున్న‌ప్పుడు దొరికే  చిన్న చిన్న ఆధారాల‌తోనే అస‌లు విష‌యాలు బ‌య‌టికొస్తుంటాయి. ఆ త‌ర‌హా స‌న్నివేశాలే  థ్రిల్‌ని పంచుతుంటాయి. ఈ క‌థ‌లో మాత్రం నేరాలు చేసేవాళ్లే  త‌మ అస‌లు రూపాన్ని బ‌య‌ట‌పెట్ట‌డం అంత‌గా అత‌క‌లేద‌నిపిస్తుంది. క‌థ‌లో థ్రిల్ మిస్ కావ‌డానికి అదొక ప్ర‌ధాన కార‌ణం.  కానీ  మ‌ధు పాత్ర‌లో న‌టించిన వ‌ర‌ల‌క్ష్మి శ‌ర‌త్‌కుమార్, డా.గౌత‌మ్ (ఉన్ని ముకుంద‌న్‌), కేంద్ర‌మంత్రి (రావు ర‌మేష్‌) నేప‌థ్యాలు, వాళ్లు క‌లిసిన విధానం ఆస‌క్తిక‌రంగా అనిపిస్తుంది. ప‌తాక స‌న్నివేశాల్లో స‌మంత పాత్ర‌లో మ‌రో కోణం క‌నిపిస్తుంది. అది కూడా సినిమాకి హైలైట్‌గా నిలిచింది.  స‌మంత చేసిన పోరాట ఘ‌ట్టాలు బాగున్నాయి. ఈ క‌థ‌లో భావోద్వేగాలు పండిన‌ప్ప‌టికీ,  ప్రేక్ష‌కుడికి మ‌రింత థ్రిల్‌ని పంచ‌డంలో ద‌ర్శ‌కులు త‌డ‌బ‌డిన‌ట్టు అనిపిస్తుంది. పాన్ ఇండియా స్థాయి సినిమాకి త‌గ్గ‌ట్టుగా నిర్మించ‌డం సినిమాకి క‌లిసొచ్చే మ‌రో అంశం.

ఎవ‌రెలా చేశారంటే?

య‌శోద‌గా స‌మంత  న‌ట‌న సినిమాకి ప్ర‌ధాన‌బ‌లం. ఆరంభంలో అమాయ‌కంగా క‌నిపిస్తూ, త‌న‌వైన హావ‌భావాల‌తో వినోదం  పంచిన ఆమె, ఆ త‌ర్వాత త‌న‌లో మ‌రో కోణాన్ని ఆవిష్క‌రిస్తూ పాత్ర‌ని పండించిన తీరు బాగుంది. పోరాట ఘ‌ట్టాల్లోనూ స‌త్తా చాటింది. వ‌ర‌ల‌క్ష్మి శ‌ర‌త్‌కుమార్, ఉన్ని ముకుంద‌న్‌, రావుర‌మేష్‌ల పాత్ర‌లు ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటాయి. ముర‌ళీశ‌ర్మ‌, సంప‌త్‌రాజ్‌, శ‌త్రు అల‌వాటైన పాత్ర‌ల్లోనే క‌నిపిస్తారు. సాంకేతిక విభాగాలు సినిమాకి మ‌రింత వ‌న్నె తీసుకొచ్చాయి. మ‌ణిశ‌ర్మ సంగీతం, అశోక్ క‌ళా ప్ర‌తిభ‌, సుకుమార్ కెమెరా ప‌నిత‌నం సినిమాలోని ప్రతి ఫ్రేమ్‌లో కనిపిస్తుంది. ఈవా ఆస్ప‌త్రిని తీర్చిదిద్దిన విధానం, దాన్ని తెర‌పై అంతే కొత్త‌గా చూపించిన విధానం బాగుంది. సంభాషణలు ఆకట్టుకున్నాయి. ద‌ర్శ‌కులు హ‌రి -హ‌రీష్ తెర‌పై ఓ కొత్త క‌థ‌ని చూపించారు. అయితే ఆ క‌థ‌ని న‌డిపించిన విధానంలోనే అక్క‌డ‌క్క‌డా లోపాలు క‌నిపిస్తాయి.  మ‌రింత థ్రిల్‌ని జోడించ‌డంలో ద‌ర్శ‌కులు విఫ‌ల‌మ‌య్యారు.

Actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu has been very picky when it comes to her female-centric projects. Her choices so far have paid off handsomely with films like U-Turn and Oh! Baby working big time with the audiences. Her latest outing Yashoda, too, falls in the same category, as it offers something new to the viewers and it succeeds to a large extent, despite taking a very familiar route when it comes to some twists. In a refreshing departure from what we’ve seen of her in the recent past, Samantha delivers a knockout performance in Yashoda, playing a role that’s hard to guess for the most part. It’s an earnest performance and she makes even some dull predictable moments watchable with her presence. Samantha plays Yashoda, and her world revolves around her younger sister. When she desperately needs money for her sister’s operation, she signs up to become a surrogate mother. She’s soon transferred to the high-tech facility called Eva; a company that’s helping people fulfil their dreams of becoming parents through surrogacy. It’s a major change for Yashoda, who slowly starts to make friends inside with some fellow surrogate mothers. Everything is fine at first but things slowly start to spiral out of control, and Yashoda suspects that something suspicious about the place. The local police is also investigating a high profile case of a road accident involving a businessman and a top model. As Yashoda tries to uncover the secrets of Eva, a strange connection is established with the case the police are working on. The rest of the story is about what’s Eva actually doing in the name of surrogacy?

Yashoda takes time to actually take off and get the audience invested. It has some very interesting stretches as it openly talks about making surrogacy mainstream and the attempt deserves to be praised. At the same time, it also talks about how we as humans are abusing medical advancement for our own greed. Somewhere, Yashoda tries to walk a tightrope in trying to establish the fact that surrogacy can both be a boon as well as bane. The film’s central premise is very interesting and it’s rarely explored before. This is exactly what makes Yashoda standout, and probably made even Samantha sign the project. The grouse comes in the form of the plot twist which has been tried many times before. It’s not about the familiarity of the plot twist but it’s so generic that it lacks excitement.

Nevertheless, it’s Samantha’s show all the way. The way she handles her character and the eventual transformation is proof of her ability to go the extra mile to make her performance look authentic. Both Unni Mukundan and Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar get very interesting parts and it’s quite bold of both of them to play such characters without much fuss. The production design deserves a special mention since most of the story unfolds inside a large facility and the setwork is commendable.

What’s it about?

Yashoda (Samantha), a poor unmarried woman, agrees to be a surrogate mother because she needs the money for her younger sister’s surgery. She is taken to Eva, a surrogate mother facility centre in the middle of the forest.

Yashoda discovers that there are many poor women waiting for delivery when she enters the Eva facility run by a woman Madhu (Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar,  and a doctor Gowtham (Unni Mukundan).

Yashoda suspects that the felicity centre is a shady operation and sets out to expose it. What exactly is the facility’s scam? How is Yashoda capable of unearthing the scam?

On the surface, ‘Yashoda,’ starring Samantha in the lead role, is a surrogacy thriller, but the plot also involves a medical mafia involved in sinister crimes. The main plot is interesting, and it also offers twists and turns, which are essential characteristics for a good thriller.

Written and directed by Hari and Harish, some parts are riveting, while others give the impression that the directors should have rewritten them.

Let us begin with the positive aspects. The idea of keeping surrogate mothers in one location and the doctors who should be providing care planning unspeakable crimes is intriguing. This keeps us invested in the story. After a slow build-up, the drama picks up just before the intermission.

The pre-interval sequence exemplifies effective writing, execution, and acting. This sequence is the film’s high point.

The second half of the film also features two major thrills: 1) disclosure of another scam 2) the true identity of the heroine.  ‘Yashoda’ provides these high moments.

Let us now look at its disadvantages. The hospital scenes, particularly the interaction between the inmates, are tedious. The film progresses unevenly until the pre-interval sequence. And the scenes involving Sampath Raj’s police investigation are formulaic and ineffective. The scenes seem hollow, especially when Murali Sharma confronts Sampath Raj’s team.  The film’s major plot twist is both surprising and predictable. Yeah, predictability is its one of the main problems.

Having said that, ‘Yashoda’ works primarily because of Samantha’s terrific performance. Her character has two sides, which she brilliantly portrays. Samantha rules the entire show.  Unni Mukundan as the doctor and Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar as the actress stand out for their roles and effective acting styles.

The film has an excellent production and technical performances. The cinematography and production design are particularly noteworthy. The action stunts work well. Dialogues by Pulagam Chinnarayana and Challa Bhagyalaxmi are effective.

Bottom-line: ‘Yashoda’ is a thriller about the medical mafia. Samantha’s stardom and performance, which she delivers superbly, are crucial to the female-centric action drama. The pre-interval scenes are riveting. ‘Yashoda,’ at times predictable, has its moments.

Samantha's item song in "Pushpa" went viral last year. A year later, she released the thriller "Yashoda," in which she played the lead. "Yashoda" has sparked interest due to her current health situation as well as the stunning trailer.

Let us examine its highlights and low points.

Story: Yashoda (Samantha) agrees to be a surrogate mother because she desperately needs money. She signs a contract with a corporate hospital and is taken to a hidden location where many surrogate mothers are observed prior to their deliveries.

Yashoda is treated at this centre by a handsome doctor named Gowtham (Unni) and is overseen by beauty pageant contestant Madhu (Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar).  Yashoda soon realises that something sinister is going on. She tries to discover the secrets.

A group of police officers, on the other hand, is investigating the murder of a model. What is the connection between these two threads? Is Yashoda about to reveal a secret?

Artistes’ Performances: Samantha bears the weight of the story on her shoulders. She is convincing in both facets of her character. Samantha has also convincingly performed action stunts. She has made every effort to enthral as the story revolves around her.

Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar is an excellent choice for the role of a "beautiful devil." Unni Mukundan is ideal as a doctor with a hidden agenda.

Murali Sharma, Rao Ramesh, Kalpika, Divya Sripada, Sampath Raj, and Shatru all have done their roles justifiably.

Technical Excellence: The plot revolves primarily around a surrogacy centre. The sets that have been created are lavish. The cinematography is satisfactory. The editing should have been more precise. Action stunts are entertaining.

Music is fuctional. Dialogues are effective.

Analysis Hari and Harish, the Tamil directors, have written a story with a different plot point. Many films have dealt with the theme of medical mafias and evil doctors. Surrogacy-themed films have also emerged. "Yashoda" combines all of these elements and tells a very different story within the framework. 

“Yashoda” begins differently because it combines two unrelated stories - a murder investigation and a surrogacy centre scam. However, the directors gradually build up drama and intrigue before the intermission. The pre-interval scenes are the thriller's main draw. They are not only well-written, but also thrillingly shot. 

But momentum begins to wane after that point. It also becomes predictable after a certain point. The story's twist, while impressive, is also formulaic. Such a twist was seen in an iconic blockbuster 15 years ago, and it has since appeared in numerous films.

And flashback story involves Unni Mukundan and Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar. This story does not completely convince us. It appears to be superficial. Unni Mukundan's and Varalxaxmi's character arcs are underdeveloped.

While the plot and overall concept are intriguing, key scenes are executed half-heartedly. The Murali Sharma/Sampath Raj incident is far too predictable.

"Yashoda" works in parts. Samantha's performance and presence, as well as the film's basic concept and certain episodes, are its strong points. Despite some predictability, it makes an okay watch.

Yashoda Movie Review: The ideas are there, but the execution isn’t

I feel compelled to be kinder towards films that feature women protagonists. We don’t get enough of them, and it’s empowering and cathartic to see women kick a**. Samantha is at the centre of Yashoda and plays a character straight out of the hero playbook. There are fight sequences, there’s a rousing reveal, there’s sister sentiment, there’s a leader angle… And yet, it’s not a protagonist a man could have played. For one, pregnancy is at the thick of things, and it adds flavour that the protagonist, Yashoda , is going through it herself, as she uncovers a horrific conspiracy that exploits women victims. At the end, in fact, there’s something about these women joining to fight back—but it's just cursory symbolism, with no one except Samantha’s Yashoda ever doing much to help themselves. However, it’s still fascinating to behold the joys of ‘testosterone cinema’ playing out with a heroine, instead of a hero—and it helps that Samantha sells the action choreography really well. There’s genuine urgency about her movement, there’s a method to her fighting, and when adversaries collapse around her, you buy that they have been outfought. The action blocks are perhaps the brightest point of Yashoda .

It's a film with many curious ideas. There’s the exploration of surrogacy and a half-hearted attempt to capture the lives of consenting women. There’s a medical facility—no, a high-tech prison—complete with regular audio announcements of the schedule of patients—no, “inmates”. The whole design of the place reminded me of Black Mirror . There’s a fascinating idea about the lengths a woman goes to, to preserve her beauty, and some commentary about what ‘real beauty’ is. There’s even some espionage and sleuthing. And yet, it’s impossible to shake off the realisation that Yashoda should have been a far, far superior film, given the weight of these ideas. A big problem is how unconvincingly these ideas are fleshed out. For instance, Yashoda is shown to forge a deep bond with other inmates, but it happens over unconvincing bits-and-pieces of flaky camaraderie. For the longest time, the screenplay feels disjointed with two separate tracks, with the second, especially—about cops played by Murali Sharma and Sampath, investigating a murder—lacking any real purpose and charm, serving only to distract from the events featuring Samantha.

The big horrific reveals in the second half don’t affect as they should, even if the film does get marginally more interesting when the Madhubala (Varalaxmi) flashback plays out. But even here, pay attention to how a beauty pageant is weakly conceived and executed, and how Madhubala’s character gets introduced, as she throws a stray line about us seeking beauty in even deities. The brightest point in this flashback is when Varalaxmi’s Madhubala, Rao Ramesh’s politician (the actor is a hoot, as always), and Unni Mukundan’s nerd-stalker have a three-way conflict—and the bizarre, exaggerated way in which it plays out results in some campy fun.

While the film—on the surface—is about surrogacy and how women are exploited (a rather nuanced topic a simplistic film like this doesn’t have the stomach for), its portrayal of certain types of women is rather revealing, I think. Let’s leave aside the bad choice to have Samantha look as made-up for a role that’s supposed to be grounded, even if not thoroughly impoverished. There’s an early scene between Yashoda and her friends, as each woman reveals their reason for agreeing to be a surrogate mother. While many talk of poverty and suffering, one woman—with short, coloured hair and a rather ‘modern’ demeanour—speaks of wanting to afford an iPhone. I thought, “Fair enough, it’s your body, your rules.” Well, a twist in the film betrays its view about such women—and let’s say it’s not exactly progressive. Pay close attention to the ‘good woman’ in this film, Yashoda’s friend, and you’ll see that she’s all dressed up as a traditional woman, with long-plaited hair, bindi... You get the idea. There’s a queer character in the film, the head of a fashion brand, and the film doesn’t do itself any favours with how it portrays this person either. The villain—Madhubala—is one who gets an abortion and doesn’t become a ‘mother’. All of this made me wonder whether Yashoda is conceived as a film meant to valourise pregnancies, meant to reaffirm the dated idea that it’s motherhood that makes a woman. An end scene of childbirth, another previous scene of a woman sharing a story about her husband’s inability to produce a child… All of this makes you wonder.

And of course, when a film and its protagonist are named Yashoda —the foster mother of Krishna—the significance is rather straightforward. And yet, this film, more than once, drums in this idea, even referencing Krishna’s birth at one point. It doesn’t seem to think you’ll get it otherwise. Perhaps if Yashoda had respected us better, we might have ended up with a more nuanced take on the subject of surrogacy and a film that might perhaps have been more deserving of Samantha’s action exploits.

Yashoda story is all about surrogacy and the dark secrets behind it. Yashoda (Samantha) a poor girl in order to help her sister pursue her studies and get her married, decides to become a surrogate mother. She is taken to Eva Hospital facility and as days progress she finds something fishy going on. Where this leads to, whether Samatha delivers a baby, what is its connection to the mysterious murders happening in the city, and how they are related to EVA Hospital top brass Madhubala (Varalaxmi Sarathkumar), Dr. Gautam (Unni Mukundan), Union Minister Giridhar (Rao Ramesh), police officer Rishi (Shatru) and military officer Vasudev (Shatru) from the crux of Yashoda.

Yashoda Movie : Artists, Technicians Review

Yashoda's story is all about surrogacy and they tried to surprise viewers with a medical thriller. The story and plot chosen by Hari and Harish are novel and completely different from the ones we have seen in medical thrillers. The narration starts off in an interesting and exciting way with mysterious murders and Samantha is then introduced as a girl who opts for surrogacy due to financial constraints. The parallel narration generates interest to a point but the hospital scenes where Samantha interacts with others dip down the proceedings. But the director duo scored points by including the emotional angle into it. Artificiality increased during the hospital scenes unlike the investigation scenes involving Murali Sharma, Sampath Raj, and Shatru. But curiosity levels increase once Samantha finds out interesting and shocking things in the hospital during the pre-interval and interval scenes. This set the stage for the gripping second half with Samantha taking charge. This excites viewers and Samantha's role is elevated to the core thrilling her fans. But when the stage is set for the next level takeoff, the flashback featuring Varalakshmi Sarathkumar and Unni Mukundan, and Rao Ramesh dips the proceedings. There are many scenes in the film in the second half when viewers think that the film come to end but it drags on and on till the routine climax brings down the curtains to Yashoda. Hari and Harish's screenplay is fine to some point but at times it went for a toss. The same is with the script and the story. Samantha during the last few years has been reinventing herself by doing different performance-oriented roles. Samantha with Yashoda showed her acting prowess once again. She showed variations in her expressions and emotions. At the start, she played the role of an innocent girl out to help her sister and then shows her curiosity to find out the mysterious happenings in the hospital. Samantha indulged in breathtaking stunts and also emoted well showing her feelings as a pregnant woman. For all her performance, the character arc in the film all Samantha's hard work failed to elevate it to the next level. The dialogues of Pulagam Chinnarayana and Bhagyalakshmi are impactful and thought-provoking. They highlighted the emotions quite well. Varalakshmi Sarathkumar played the role typical to her appearance and of late she is getting similar kinds of roles. But her flashback episode turned out to be artificial. Unni Mukundan performed the supporting role well as the doctor. His role comes with a surprise. But Unni Mukundan's role could have been elevated more. Rao Ramesh once again entertained with his dialogue delivery and antics and expressions. Shatru, Sampath Raj, and others performed according to their roles. Mani Sharma's music is just ok. None of the songs get registered. His background music is in sync with the story and took viewers along with them. The cinematography of Sukumar is good and gave a rich feel to the scenes. The editing of Marthand K Venkatesh is ok but could have been far better as there are a few drags in the film.

Samantha's Yashoda with Hari and Harish generated immense interest among movie lovers with interesting teasers and trailers. Hari and Harish tried to show Samantha in a completely different role and expose the surrogacy scandals showing Samantha as the surrogate mother. This is quite interesting and with the interesting concept and plot, they proceeded ahead. They started the proceedings in an interesting way but in between, they failed to maintain the tempo as the screenplay went uneven. It went from racy to patchy and artificial and routine elements marred their creativity. Had Hari and Harish included a few more interesting twists and turns to thrill the viewers, Yashoda could have made an even better impact. Yashoda for the brilliant start and interesting interval bang in the end turned routine with the climax. Altogether Yashoda is an interesting medical thriller that failed to show more power. Considering all these aspects, Cinejosh goes with a 2.5 rating for Yashoda.

Samantha has so evolved as a performer, where her name has become a selling point along with the other aspects of a film. Samantha is coming with a film Yashoda, where she plays the lead role. The trailer was intriguing and hinted at conspiracy around the concept of surrogacy. The movie was released today in theaters. Check out the review.

What Is It About?

Yashoda (Samantha) a food delivery girl agrees to become a surrogate mother for a large sum of money. She will be sent to a highly sophisticated surrogate facility owned by Madhubala (Varalakshmi Sarathkumar). Yashoda learns that something is not right at the facility and she gets shocked seeing gruesome incidents happening there. On the other side, there is an active murder investigation of a business tycoon that leads to a stunning end. How is it linked to Yashoda’s story and what she does thereafter form the rest of the story.

Performances

Samantha gave an apt performance in the role of Yashoda. This role is a cakewalk for her, yet the effort she put into crossing the ‘t’s and dotting the ‘I’s could be seen in this dual-shaded role. This time she had to do the action part also and she has done it effortlessly. 

Varalakshmi Sarathkumar appears as a dangerous woman in a cold blood. Most of her roles were aggressive and yelling types, but In Yashoda she had to be subtle yet ruthless. She did quite well. Unni Mukundan supported her well. Sampath Raj, Murli Sharma, and others were alright in their respective roles. Kalpika, Divya Sripada, and others will be seen in brief roles. 

Technicalities

The storyline of Yashoda is interesting. For the concept, the movie hardly needed outdoor shots. Most of the sets looked fine while some shots in the facility appear to be heavily inspired by Hollywood sci-fi thrillers. The concept of confining the inmates with illusion walls is an unusual setup. The screenplay is good. Background music by Manisharma is alright.

Slow First Half Predictable episodes Routine Climax

Analysis  

There were many movies based on the concept of surrogacy earlier. This plot of Yashoda is a plot developed from real investigative research that is untouched in films so far. A woman in need of money agrees to be a surrogate mother for an unknown billionaire and reaches a state-of-the-art facility for the same. Smelling a conspiracy, she digs deeper to unturn the dark truths only to find a giant mafia. 

The first half of Yashoda is slow with the setup in the surrogacy facility, with friends and character establishment. But it gets interesting as the narrative gets into the plot a little deeper toward the interval block. The pre-interval to interval sequences are rightly done promising an intriguing second half. The plot could be sensed on whole, but the details remain blurred until the revelations slowly turn up

The second half is more gripping and intriguing with each twist and turn. From Madhu’s flashback to the establishment of the murder investigation link, there are some good twists that turned out well. The concept of narrating two parallel stories back and forth without disclosing a link between them and that too until the latter second half is adventurous. If one side derails, there is a chance that by the time the link is established, the narration might have looked bumpy. That balance and suspense link between the two sides is maintained well by the director duo. 

On the downside, a perverted security guard, a highly monitored facility with umpteen blindspots, and a spine-chilling mafia setup with opened exit doors are some routine cinematic liberties that could have been worked differently. The emotional blocks in the pre-climax are too conventional. 

The thrill factor worked mostly while the emotional episodes are cliched. The climax is obvious with some routine action blocks. Overall, Yashoda is a decent thriller with a few stereotyped scenes. 

Bottomline: Decent Thriller With Suspense Elements !

After a long time, Samantha had been gearing up for the release of her film in theatres, with Yashoda, which has been carrying good expectations on it, ever since the release of its teaser. The film has finally been released today, and let’s see how the film has fared.

Story: Yashoda agrees to be a surrogate mother and joins a huge firm which is known for surrogacy pregnancies, providing reproductively challenged mothers withe babies and making them mothers. However, not everything is as it seems and Yashoda soon realises that. What’s wrong with the establishment and what happens ultimately forms the rest of the story.

On-Screen Performances:

Naturally, Samantha carries the whole film on her shoulders and keeps the audience entertained and on the edge of their seats from the start to finish. She is also highly impeccable in the fight sequences.

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Unni Mukundan, Rao Ramesh, Sampath Raj and the remaining supporting cast is good in their roles, contributing well to the progress of the story.

Off-Screen Talents:

The story of Yashoda is simple, and the directors manage to keep everyone guessing what’s next very well, at least until 30 minutes into the second half. However, once the twist is revealed and explanations are given, the story becomes diluted and everything becomes very expected. The dialogues by Pulagam Chinnarayana and Challa Bhagya Lakshmi are good.

The background score of the film, provided by Mani Sharma, is one of the major highlights of the film, contributing quite well to the movie. It adds to the overall feel of the movie well.

The production design and cinematography of the film are also good enough, and it clearly shows that the producers haven’t shied away from investing in the film.

Verdict: Yashoda is a good thriller, but turns out to be quite routine in the end. Samantha is very good in her role, and as long as she’s on the screen, she’ll keep you entertained. If not for adulterated climax, one can watch for thriller elements and Samantha.

First half Report: Movie starts with a somewhat routine story but slowly develops into a mystery thriller that keeps you guessing. Sam’s action in the pre interval scenes is good. Good background score, movie really hinges on how mystery is solved in the second half.

Overall the movie is a decent watch, its a mystery thriller that keeps you on the edge for good part of the movie. Could have been better if the climax is not adulterated with sentiment and comedy.

Story: Yashoda (Samantha) is a girl from a poor family who signs a surrogacy contract and joins EVA hospital run by Madhu( Varalakshmi Sarat Kumar ). Yashoda learns about the shocking another side of the EVA after joining there. What are the dark activity Madhu and her mafia do in the EVA , and how Yashoda uncovers the mafia is the rest of the story

Yashoda starts with a suspicious death – a common thing in many crime films. A heroine from a western country dies mysteriously on her India trip, autopsy report finds a mysterious drug in her body. Meanwhile, Yashoda who signs a surrogacy contract joins in EVA center. As the audience knows there is a common link between these two threads, it is essential that scenes and narration must be engaging and fast-paced. Instead, the first half‘s main focus is on motherhood and gender bias-based back-stories discussed between the four women characters in EVA. There is a shocking element in the crime that happens in EVA center which is worth 10 web series episodes. Despite using those elements, the main story does not start until the interval block is a minus.

In a crime-themed film, revealing the real suspense element must be very effective. Hero or police investigate and reveal the suspense element in an engaging manner making it effective, but in this film, the antagonists themselves reveal the whole operation via a video presentation. There are two flashback episodes in the second half. Madhu’s ( varalakshmi) flashback is a shocking one, which forms the core point of the film. Climax episodes are dragged on a lot with mindless fights. Eva center design is modern and adds a different backdrop look to the film.

Production values stand out in the film. Action sequences are stylish, and Sukumar’s camera work is good. Mani sarma’s background score is adequate

Performances: It’s a Samantha one-woman show, she has shown mature performance. Samantha well understood the dual-shaded role, played with ease. She did well in fight episodes as well. The next notable character is varalakshmi’s villainy, which she did well. Unni Mukundan role is crucial as well. Rao Ramesh, Murali Sharma roles are limited, and T fit for them.

YASHODA is an average film at the best. The first half of the film is in sentimental mode; the second half has some action and a few dark elements. The predictable narration turns out to be negative to this otherwise modernly shot film.

Yashoda Movie Storyline

The subject of this movie is surrogacy and the surrogacy mafia. The protagonist is a young woman called Yashoda, who is pregnant. She has been asked to follow a strict regimen for her mental and physical well-being and safety. However, certain happenings make her live on the edge, risking her life. She decides to become a surrogate in exchange for cash. She goes to EVA, a surrogacy centre owned by a certain Madhu. Things start on a good note for Yashoda, but one small incident is enough for her to start doubting everything. She finds out about the illegal activities surrounding surrogacy and the surrogacy mafia. Her mission is to bring these culprits to justice.
