Of these individual essay consultants, Chris Hunt at College Essay Mentor is our favorite. He combines writing experience as a journalist for the Economist and the Wall Street Journal with personal experience as a graduate of Dartmouth. However, he only works with a small number of students each year, and students need to apply to work with him — he only accepts students with top grades and test scores who are already strong applicants for top schools. Chris offers the option for one-time written feedback, but this only gives big-picture generalizations. (And written-only feedback is always limited.) In order for help with the essay process, students need to purchase a complete essay package.

Ethan doesn’t work directly with many students these days, but he now has a team of consultants who help students follow his principles. Their assistance is really all-or-nothing — they prefer to work with students from the very beginning of the process, and their minimum package is $4900, which includes assistance with essays for three schools. If students are applying to ten schools (a more realistic number for students aiming at competitive colleges), the fee is a hefty $7400.

Students who want unlimited help through the entire process, who have a sizable budget.

Our Verdict — Best of the Big Platforms Price: $140–180/hour There are plenty of large platforms with large stables of part-time tutors and coaches available to work with students. Of these big platforms, we think CollegeVine has the best offerings. Compared to other large companies, CollegeVine provides more information about their tutors, and students can pick individual tutors to work with from their roster. However, this model is really just a way of finding individual tutors to hire. Tutors don’t receive any training and don’t share a common approach, so it’s a mixed bag. Their rates are fairly high for part-time tutors who don’t have specific expertise and training in college essay consulting. Because CollegeVine is really just a marketplace where individual tutors can find students, the quality and price will vary widely.

Students who want to work with a big company, or those who want a quick session or two to go over their essays.

This means that they have personal experience applying to highly competitive schools. One member of the team also has a college counseling certification, which is a good background for college essays. Based on their website, they appear to focus on the editing and proofreading phase of the essay-writing process. This can be helpful to students, but we recommend working with a service who can help students to uncover their values and brainstorm really great material that allows them to really shine—and if this doesn’t happen at the beginning of the process, it’s much harder to add in later on.

• Cost: $195/1000 words for proofreading, $495/1000 words for 3 rounds of editing and proofreading, or $595/1000 words for unlimited rounds of editing and proofreading; for the purposes of comparison, complete applications to 10 competitive colleges would be around 9,650 words, or $5950.

They have a small team of tutors, mostly recent grads from good but not Ivy-Plus colleges, and mostly with focus in health sciences.

Their counselors come from “different educational backgrounds,” and while they do not provide specific biographical details we can assume that most of their essay coaches did not attend highly selective schools.

Why are college application essays important?

Can a great college essay alone get you into Harvard?

No. You’ll need your grades, test scores, and extracurricular activities (as well as letters of recommendation and interview) to be outstanding.

But can a mediocre essay be the reason you didn’t get into Harvard?

Yes. There are thousands of amazingly-qualified students who graduate from high school each year. Great grades and test scores might be a prerequisite for admission to a competitive college, but they alone aren’t enough.

College essays are a key component of a student’s application . When done well, they transform a collection of numbers—GPA, class rank, SAT or ACT scores , number of AP classes taken, AP scores—into a glimpse of a real, individual person.

Essays do many things. Good college essays can highlight extracurricular achievements which otherwise would be overlooked in a sterile list. Strong essays often indicate the student’s future plans —how they plan to leave a mark on their college campus and on the world. They can shine a light on unique challenges that a student may have had to face on their journey.

College admissions officers only have a few minutes to spend on each application. College essays need to be original, interesting, and memorable . They need to grab the attention of the admissions officer and persuade them that this is the student out of hundreds or thousands of other similarly-qualified applicants who should be admitted.

College admissions essays are usually unlike any other kind of writing that students have done before. They’re a combination of memoir and marketing pitch, and they need to be creative but also highly strategic. That’s a tough assignment!

What’s more, students are left to figure this assignment out on their own. A thoughtful and generous high school English teacher may provide guidance or offer to read essays and give feedback, but these teachers are responsible for many students, and they’re (usually) not experts in admissions strategies.

You’re thinking about starting to write your college essay! 🎉 The college essay is one of the most daunting parts about college applications and can be something that you keep putting off for later. However, writing a quality college essay takes time and if you start early and work on your essay little by little, it can make the process a lot more manageable! Among the many things that colleges are looking for , colleges want to read essays that are well planned out and authentic, so plan to dedicate a lot of time to writing them.

Like any essay, there are three main steps to writing a college essay:

1. Brainstorming 💭

Before you start immediately thinking of ideas for your own essay, it’s a good idea first to read 📖 a few successful college essays to better understand what a personal statement college essay should accomplish. By reading other essays, you can pick up on the general tone of most essays, as well as things that worked 👍or didn't work in some essays.

Once you read a few essays, it’s now time to start thinking of ideas for your own essay! Like any regular essay, the brainstorming phase of writing is often the most overlooked but critical to writing a good essay. Assuming that you are starting your essay process early and have a few weeks or months 📆 until you have to submit your application, I would suggest that the brainstorming phase takes place for a couple of days. Sometimes the best topic for a college essay isn’t necessarily the idea that you think of first, but the one that takes a little bit more soul-searching 🕵️‍♀️.

Here are a few lists 🗒 and exercises that might help bring out a potentially good college essay topic. You absolutely do not need to complete every one of these exercises, but they can be great places to start if you feel stuck.

Important Objects

For this exercise, list out 10-20 of the most important objects 🎁 throughout your life that may have had a significant impact on your life. Look around your immediate surroundings while completing this exercise. Try reaching back into the depths of your memory for those objects that you cherished as a child but might have forgotten about recently.

Distinct Events/Memories

Similar to the Important Objects exercise, try to list out 10-20 of the most distinct events or memories in your life that may have led to a revelation, a different way of thinking 💭, or personal significance. Do you have any specific hardships in your life that you faced that may have shaped you as a person? Any specific fun memories that you may want to talk about? Write it all down!

Things People May Not Know About You

More lists! This time, make a list of a few facts about yourself that you think many people don’t know about you. Sometimes these can provide slight nuances in your college essay that can make you stand out compared to other applicants. How Others Perceive You

For this exercise, have a few close friends or family members write a short list of traits or experiences that they think of when they think about you. Your personal statement essay is your one shot to try to truly encapsulate the kind of student and person you will be on a college campus 🧑‍🏫, so you’ll want to express the core of your personality in your essay. Receiving these compliments can also be a nice reminder of how great of an applicant you are as you approach the college application season 😁.

What Do You Want College Admissions Officers to Know About You?

For this exercise, jot down a concise list of 3 things that you absolutely want your college admissions officer to understand 🤔about you. These are the things about yourself that you absolutely want to get across through your essay. If someone edits your essay, they should be able to pinpoint 📍the items on this list.

2. Writing ✍️

Just Write!

Now is the time for the most intimidating part of this whole process: starting to write ✍️your essay. I know from firsthand experience how daunting it can be to be staring at a blank sheet of paper 📄and not know how to start. However, the best thing that you can do is just to start writing. Don’t try to make it perfect the first time around because it definitely won’t be. That’s the whole point of editing. The best thing that you can do if you don’t know where to start is just to write naturally! Write on a chosen essay topic as if you are trying to explain a story to your friends 👯‍♀️. You can also think about writing your essay out of order. It can be easier to start writing your essay from the middle and worry about the introduction and conclusion after you’ve already written the meat of your essay. Similarly, don’t worry about starting off your essay with a hook or fretting about grammar–that will come later during the process.

Go Over the Word Count Limit

Ok yes, in the end, you will definitely need to stick to the outlined word count limit that’s given to you. However, in the initial stages of writing your essay, don’t worry about writing your essay under the word count. Record ✏️ as many ideas on the page that you can. In other words, don’t let the word count initially limit your thoughts. From personal experience, sometimes the best ideas and connections come after writing over the word count limit 💯. If I had limited myself just to the word count, I might not have used those ideas in my final essay. During the editing phase, you can make sure that you are sticking to the essay requirements.

A Few Other Writing Tips

Write using your own voice 🗣 as much as possible! Try to avoid imitating someone else’s writing voice and tone. Colleges want to get to know the real you through this essay, and your voice is part of that! Along those same lines, avoid filling your essay with stuffy words 🎩. Your essay is a formal conversation with your admissions officer where you have an opportunity to sell a story. Sometimes using extremely proper or impressive diction may hinder the reader’s ability to truly understand the meaning of your essay.

3. Editing 💻

So you’ve gone through the brainstorming process and have written a rough draft of your college essay. Now it’s time to polish up that work!

Self-Editing Your Essay

Since you’re likely going to be editing your essay over a large span of time ⏳, it’s important to keep all previous essay versions and not continuously edit one version of your essay. You might end up deleting something from a previous version that you want to bring back but ultimately forgot about 😵. An edit that you might think is beneficial on one day may be an edit you want to go back and undo a few days later. I suggest that with every new session of editing your essay, copy and paste the essay you previously had and start editing on the new version of the essay. This way, you can still look back 👀 at previous versions of your essay when you feel the need to.

For the first few versions of your essay, you’re likely going to make many, many corrections. This is perfectly fine! With these initial revisions, you’ll edit full sentences and even paragraphs at a time, so it can be beneficial to edit directly online. Once your edits become less about complete ideas and more about word choice and grammar, it can be extremely helpful to print 🖨 out a physical copy of your essay. That way, you can read it aloud and physically mark edits with a red pen. Oftentimes, a screen can be a barrier to noticing all of the small details–interacting with them on pen and paper 📝 can make them more noticeable.

Having Others Edit Your Essay

It can also be a great idea to have friends, family, and teachers look over your essay and suggest a few edits. However, be careful not to heavily rely on this kind of peer editing. You still want your final product to contain your voice 🎤, not the voice of your editor. If someone suggests something for your essay that you may disagree with, have another person look at your essay. If multiple people suggest the same edit, it may be something you want to consider. But if it was merely a one-time comment, it is absolutely okay to ignore their comment.

It can also be helpful for you to tell editors something specific to look for. Asking your editor specifically for content edits (big picture edits, development of story, etc.) or for copy edits (grammar errors, spelling errors, sentence syntax, etc.) can give your editor more guidance and a clearer pathway for their editing. For example, you may ask your friends to see if your essay best represents you as a person, whereas you might ask your teacher to edit for flow and grammar. This can make the edits that are suggested to you much more targeted 🎯 and detailed. It can also help ensure that both you and your editor are on the same page to avoid them giving you unsolicited feedback. Keeping this in mind, it can be a good idea to have one or two rounds of content editing and one or two rounds of copy editing.

A Few Other Things to Look Out For

• Check carefully for typos
• Be specific when providing context and background
• Someone who doesn’t know a single thing about your life should be able to fully grasp the story you are trying to tell
• Avoid introducing new ideas in the final paragraph
• Avoid forced transition sentences
• Avoid cliches
• Try to write as close to the word count limit as possible
• Use the extra word count to your advantage by adding more descriptors and details

What Qualities Make for a Good College Essay Topic?

Regardless of what you write about in your personal statement for college , there are key features that will always make for a stand-out college essay topic.

#1: It’s Specific

First off, good college essay topics are extremely specific : you should know all the pertinent facts that have to do with the topic and be able to see how the entire essay comes together.

Specificity is essential because it’ll not only make your essay stand out from other statements, but it'll also recreate the experience for admissions officers through its realism, detail, and raw power. You want to tell a story after all, and specificity is the way to do so. Nobody wants to read a vague, bland, or boring story — not even admissions officers!

For example, an OK topic would be your experience volunteering at a cat shelter over the summer. But a better, more specific college essay topic would be how you deeply connected with an elderly cat there named Marty, and how your bond with him made you realize that you want to work with animals in the future.

Remember that specificity in your topic is what will make your essay unique and memorable . It truly is the key to making a strong statement (pun intended)!

#2: It Shows Who You Are

If your essay is trite or boring, it won’t leave much of an impression , and your application will likely get immediately tossed to the side with little chance of seeing admission.

What does being unique mean exactly, though? For instance, say you want to write an essay about the first time you went snowboarding. Instead of just describing the details of the experience and how you felt during it, you could juxtapose your emotions with a creative and humorous perspective from the snowboard itself. #5: It Clearly Answers the Question

Finally, good college essay topics will clearly and fully answer the question(s) in the prompt.

You might fail to directly answer a prompt by misinterpreting what it’s asking you to do, or by answering only part of it (e.g., answering just one out of three questions).

Therefore, make sure you take the time to come up with an essay topic that is in direct response to every question in the prompt .

Take this Coalition Application prompt as an example:

For this prompt, you’d need to answer all three questions (though it’s totally fine to focus more on one or two of them) to write a compelling and appropriate essay.

Once you’ve decided on a college essay topic you want to use, it’s time to buckle down and start fleshing out your essay. These six steps will help you transform a simple college essay topic into a full-fledged personal statement.

Step 1: Write Down All the Details

Once you’ve chosen a general topic to write about, get out a piece of paper and get to work on creating a list of all the key details you could include in your essay . These could be things such as the following:

• Emotions you felt at the time
• Names, places, and/or numbers
• Dialogue, or what you or someone else said
• A specific anecdote, example, or experience
• Descriptions of how things looked, felt, or seemed

If you can only come up with a few details, then it’s probably best to revisit the list of college essay topics above and choose a different one that you can write more extensively on.

Good college essay topics are typically those that:

• You remember well (so nothing that happened when you were really young)
• You're excited to write about

Step 3: Structure Your Narrative

• Beginning: Don’t just spout off a ton of background information here—you want to hook your reader, so try to start in the middle of the action , such as with a meaningful conversation you had or a strong emotion you felt. It could also be a single anecdote if you plan to center your essay around a specific theme or idea.
• Middle: Here’s where you start to flesh out what you’ve established in the opening. Provide more details about the experience (if a single anecdote) or delve into the various times your theme or idea became most important to you. Use imagery and sensory details to put the reader in your shoes.
• End: It’s time to bring it all together. Finish describing the anecdote or theme your essay centers around and explain how it relates to you now , what you’ve learned or gained from it, and how it has influenced your goals.

By now you should have all your major details and an outline for your essay written down; these two things will make it easy for you to convert your notes into a rough draft.

At this stage of the writing process, don’t worry too much about vocabulary or grammar and just focus on getting out all your ideas so that they form the general shape of an essay . It’s OK if you’re a little over the essay's word limit — as you edit, you’ll most likely make some cuts to irrelevant and ineffective parts anyway.

If at any point you get stuck and have no idea what to write, revisit steps 1-3 to see whether there are any important details or ideas you might be omitting or not elaborating on enough to get your overall point across to admissions officers.

Step 5: Edit, Revise, and Proofread

• Sections that are too wordy and don’t say anything important
• Irrelevant details that don’t enhance your essay or the point you're trying to make
• Parts that seem to drag or that feel incredibly boring or redundant
• Areas that are vague and unclear and would benefit from more detail
• Phrases or sections that are awkwardly placed and should be moved around
• Areas that feel unconvincing, inauthentic, or exaggerated

Start paying closer attention to your word choice/vocabulary and grammar at this time, too. It’s perfectly normal to edit and revise your college essay several times before asking for feedback, so keep working with it until you feel it’s pretty close to its final iteration.

This step will likely take the longest amount of time — at least several weeks, if not months — so really put effort into fixing up your essay. Once you’re satisfied, do a final proofread to ensure that it’s technically correct.

Step 6: Get Feedback and Tweak as Needed

After you’ve overhauled your rough draft and made it into a near-final draft, give your essay to somebody you trust , such as a teacher or parent, and have them look it over for technical errors and offer you feedback on its content and overall structure.

Use this feedback to make any last-minute changes or edits. If necessary, repeat steps 5 and 6. You want to be extra sure that your essay is perfect before you submit it to colleges!
