The clinical program is accredited by the American Psychological Association and the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System.

Your program will typically be fully funded for five years thanks to stipend grant support and guaranteed teaching fellowships. Tuition support is also available for a six-year program. Funding is also available for research, travel, and conferences. You will have access to the latest technology at FAS Research Computing and the Neuroimaging Facility at the Center for Brain Science.

Academic Background

While an undergraduate concentration in psychology is not required, some social science coursework is recommended. Because the program is heavily quantitatively oriented, college-level math and statistics are also advised. Research experience is extremely helpful; successful applicants have often worked for professors, done research projects as part of college courses, written an undergraduate thesis, or volunteered in a psychology research lab.

It’s important to note that while individual faculty members may have every intention of bringing in a new student this year, we cannot guarantee that they will all be able to do so. The total number of offers of admission to be extended by the graduate program is based on applicant preparedness and fit, availability of university advising and support resources, and target class size. Some of these factors are not able to be determined until after the applicant pool has been finalized.

What Does Fully Funded Actually Mean?

You may have heard that many PhD programs are fully funded — universities pay doctoral students to attend school and even provide health insurance. The thought of getting paid to earn an advanced degree in a subject that deeply interests you may seem like a good deal – so what’s the catch? Are PhD programs free? Is a fully-funded PhD real? 

Before you sign that dotted line and accept such an offer, understand the whole picture of a fully funded program and whether the offer will be worth it for you.  

What’s included in a fully funded program? 

Before you can make sense of a funding offer, you might be asking yourself two big questions.  1. How much does a PhD costs?  2. How do PhD students get paid ?   First, a doctoral program can cost anywhere between $131,000-$263,000.   If those numbers feel daunting, you’re not alone. Most universities understand that the cost of this investment looms over students, which is why they offer fully funded doctoral programs that include tuition waivers, assistantships and living stipends that cover your base expenses to make the longevity of your study possible. A fully-funded offer is essentially an invitation to become a member of that department. Your funding offer typically comes in the form of an assistantship, which means you work for the department in some way. 

Types of PhD Funding

The two most popular options are teaching assistantships and research assistantships .  Depending on your discipline, you may be offered one or the other when you start, and you may be reassigned as you go through your program depending on your department’s needs, your strengths and the areas you may need more experience.  Fellowships are another form of funding, which can either be tied to an assistantship or a funding opportunity that gives you the freedom to focus more time on your research. Regardless of the funding type, these offers demonstrate that your department is investing in you and your work. That investment prepares you for future careers by providing hands-on training in your area and the experience you need to succeed post-graduation. 

What to Consider Before Accepting a Fully-Funded PhD Program

→ Assistantships and fellowships add to your workload.  For some students, the teaching and research assignments with funding can be a lot to juggle on top of regular coursework and independent research. Make sure you understand the expectations of your offer before you agree to accept it.  → PhD training takes time Receiving a PhD means that you become an expert in your field, which can sound exciting when contemplating a subject that you’re passionate about. But becoming an expert takes an investment of time.  On average, doctoral students take five to seven years to complete their degrees. While plenty of people reflect nostalgically on their time in their doctoral programs as periods of self-growth and intellectual development, it’s still important to consider the investment.  The costs can add up quickly when you include tuition, research, travel funds, living expenses, health insurance and supplies.  While a package may look fully funded, the true cost of obtaining a PhD isn’t always obvious. Even if you’re offered a fully-funded package from a great program, take some time to consider whether you’re truly interested in investing the time and effort.

As you are applying for admission to the PhD program, keep in mind that your application will also serve as your scholarship application. 

All of the materials that you submit with your online application are important for the scholarship review process - especially personal statements, academic records and letters of recommendation.

The following NIH-sponsored predoctoral training grant programs are available for U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are admitted to the Department's PhD program.

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)

Provides predoctoral support to students interested in health care policy and health services research, specifically primary care policy.

National Institute on Aging (NIA)

Provides pre- and post-doctoral support to scholars who are interested in person- and family-oriented health services and outcomes research that relates to aging populations.

National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)

1. Provides pre-doctoral support to students interested in mental health and addiction policy. 

2. Provides pre- and post-doctoral support to students who will become leaders in mental health services and systems research, jointly administered by the Department of Mental Health .

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)

Provides predoctoral support for students focusing on injury prevention. 

Injury and Violence Prevention Endowments

Endowed scholarships supporting doctoral study in injury and violence prevention. All are welcome to apply.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Funding

Provides pre- and post-doctoral support for students interested in the intersections of gun violence prevention, equity, and policy. This funding is intended to support students from historically underrepresented groups.  All are welcome to apply.

Other Sources of Funding

In addition to the above institutional funding provided by these agencies, students may also apply for individual training support (you may not receive both awards.) The individual National Research Service Award (NRSA) may provide tuition and stipend support for up to three years for doctoral candidates planning to undertake research in certain areas. Typically, applications for NRSA awards are completed during the student's first year in the doctoral program.

Once a student begins work on a dissertation proposal, the Department strongly encourages the student to seek dissertation-support funding. Government agencies and private organizations provide funding for students once they are working on an approved thesis topic.

The Stanford Graduate School of Education offers all admitted PhD students a five-year funding program. It provides tuition aid, fellowship stipend, and assistantship salary. It also covers the standard cost of attendance (campus housing rent, health insurance, food, books, and supplies). You can choose from a range of academic areas like curriculum studies and teacher education, developmental and psychological sciences, and cross-disciplinary specializations. This scholarship is contingent upon satisfactory academic progress by the students.

PhD Scholarships by the University of Cambridge

The University of Cambridge offers a number of scholarships to students wanting to pursue PhD courses. These scholarships are offered on the basis of academic excellence and/or financial need. Most of these scholarships cover the entire tuition for the course, and some also cover living costs, maintenance, visa costs, etc. The scholarships offered include Gates Cambridge Scholarship, Wellcome Sanger Institute 4-Year PhD Studentships, EMBL International PhD Studentships, Ivan D Jankovic PhD Studentship, Peterhouse Postgraduate Studentship Competition and Cambridge Political Economy Society Trust 3 year research scholarship, to name a few. Funding for PhD Students at Harvard University

For select PhD and masters courses, Harvard University provides funding to students in the form of research assistantships and teaching assistantships. The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard provides support to PhD students, including tuition, health fees, and basic living expenses for the duration of the program. It also includes stipends, traineeships, teaching fellowships, research assistantships, and other academic appointments.  The funds are granted to students on the basis of academic excellence and/or financial support.

Funding by California Institute of Technology (Caltech)

All doctorate students wanting to study at Caltech receive full financial support in the form of internal or external fellowships, research assistantships, teaching assistantships, or some combination of fellowship and assistantship support. The funds are awarded on an annual basis and are contingent upon satisfactory academic progress. There is no separate application required; you are automatically considered when applying.

Scholarships by Imperial College London

The Imperial College London offers scholarships at the doctoral level to both home and overseas students. The scholarships provide tuition fees and a grant for living costs. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic performance and to students who require financial support.

Graduate Research Scholarship at UCL

The University College London offers graduate research scholarships in various disciplines. The scholarship is awarded based on academic excellence and research potential. It covers the tuition fees, provides a maintenance stipend of £17,609 (INR 17.77 Lakhs) and a research cost of  £1,200 (INR 1.21 Lakhs) per year for the duration of the program. University of Chicago

University of Chicago aids graduate students by offering funding opportunities for PhD programs. Students pursuing doctoral degrees receive competitive funding packages, which cover tuition and student health insurance . In addition, as the cost of living is comparatively low in Chicago, the students are also provided with a stipend to cover living costs and research support. The funding is provided for the entire duration of the course. Also, several opportunities are available, like prestigious fellowships, which support language study, travel, or dissertation research. YTB and IsDB Joint Scholarship Program 2024 in Turkiye (Fully Funded)

Another Ticket to Turkiye for Those who missed applying for the Turkiye Burslari Scholarship 2024 , there is another fully funded scholarship opportunity for them. Apply for the YTB and IsDB Joint Scholarship Program 2024-25 . YTB is a Turkish government agency that manages the Türkiye Scholarships program. This Joint scholarship program will allow students from IsDB member countries to pursue Bachelor, Master, and PhD programs from Turkish Universities.

Applicants from eligible countries can submit applications via the Turkiye Scholarship website in 8 different languages: Turkish, Arabic, English, French, Russian, Bosnian, Persian, and Spanish. Selected applicants will receive a full scholarship for the entire duration of the program. The scholarship is available for the academic year 2024-25. More details are given below.
