Christian Bagshaw
PhD Student, Mathematics
UNSW Sydney
Home Research Code Talks Teaching
Welcome! My name is Christian, and I am a PhD student in mathematics at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, working under the supervision of Igor Shparlinski, Bryce Kerr and Alina Ostafe. I completed an honours degree (first class) in mathematics at the University of Calgary in 2021, where I was awarded multiple university medals.
My PhD work is currently centered around arithmetic problems in rational function fields over finite fields, and I am particularly interested in exponential sums in this setting.
I am also interested in data science and machine learning, and in applying my mathematics and problem solving skills in industry settings. I am currently working as a Data Science Intern at Audinate here in Sydney.
Faculty of Science
School of mathematics and statistics.
Becoming a PhD student: What does it take?
Date: , venue: .
Applying for PhD programs is a complex process, from finding the information you need (e.g., scholarships) to taking various tests, writing applications and going through interviews. Besides, this process differs from country to country.
Mr. Marley Young (future PhD at University of Cambridge), who has recently gone through this process, will talk about what it takes to apply for, and obtain, a PhD position in US and UK, while A/Prof. Ian Doust (Director of Postgraduate Studies in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, UNSW) will discuss the opportunities of doing a PhD in Australia. This information session is especially dedicated to interested students in years 3+, but everyone is welcome to attend.
For any questions or further information please contact Dr Alina Ostafe, [email protected]

Sperner's Lemma: old and new proofs, generalizations, and surprising applications
Tuesday, 2-April-2024
Who doesn't like one of these three: geometry, topology, and combinatorics? And even if you don't, you will still love Sperner's lemma, which is a combinatorial statement that is equivalent to the Brouwer fixed point theorem in topology. I'll explain what it is, why it's so amazing, give heartwarming old and new proofs, and present a recent generalization to polytopes that has surprised me with diverse applications: to the study of triangulations, to fair division problems, and the Game of Hex.
