Guidelines for Bachelor/Master Theses
This sheet contains the most important information for students that have been accepted for writing a thesis at our institute. If there are any open questions not answered here, please consult your supervisor.
General Information
Please read the following link of the computer science department for details regarding the registration and submission as well as the formal requirements of the thesis: Hinweise für Studierende für Abschlussarbeiten . Please also look at the Formvorgaben für Abschlussarbeiten . Read the requirements of your examination regulations for theses and keep them in mind. While typically these requirements should already be covered by the "Hinweise für Studierende für Abschlussarbeiten" page, double check to make sure that this is the case. The university also offers a general FAQ for students writing a thesis . Note that this FAQ provides content for supervisors and examinors as well which you do not have to read.
Below, you find additional information about specifics at our institute. We do not repeat information from the links above.
Formal Procedure
- Our secretary needs some data from you to prepare the thesis contract. Please send, as early as possible, the following data via email to our secretary: address, phone number, e-mail address, matrikelnummer, and course of study
- For the contract, we also need a short summary of your topic/task and a working title for the thesis (the title must be both in English and German. It can still be changed while working on the thesis). Your supervisor might ask you to prepare a first draft of the title and the summary which will then be edited.
- Once the contract has been prepared, you can schedule a meeting with our secretary for formally registering the thesis. You need to bring the prepared registration form (please refer to https://www.student.uni-stuttgart.de/pruefungsorganisation/formulare/#id-959532c6 ). In case you do not know your working title for the field "Thema", please ask your supervisor. Our secretary will then inform you about the next steps.
- If you have any questions (e.g., regarding the structure and contents of the thesis) or you encounter problems that you cannot solve yourself, contact your supervisor . We will usually not initiate meetings ourselves; instead, students are responsible for scheduling meetings as they need them. We encourage you to get feedback from your supervisor on a regular basis.
- You are required to submit 2 copies of your thesis (unless specified otherwise in the contract) plus one separate copy of the title page.
- Please contact our secretary in order to make an appointment for the submission of your thesis.
- Digital Submission: Send your final thesis (as PDF) as well as the required abstract txt file(s) to your supervisor at the University and our secretary by email. Please note that the digital version must be identical to the printed copies.
- If your thesis includes source code or other digital artifacts, please ask you supervisor at the University on whether and how to submit those.
- If you wrote your thesis with a company: Make sure that your thesis and other digital artifacts are approved for submission by the company. If in doubt: Talk to your advisor at the company.
- Depending on your course of study, you might have to give a presentation that presents/summarizes your thesis (see below).
- Contact your supervisor after the submission of the thesis to schedule the presentation. You should also tell him your course of study such that an appropriate length of the presentation can be determined.
Additional Information for Theses Written at an External Company
If you are writing your thesis at an external company, please keep the following additional details in mind:
- We need some additional information about the external company that advises your thesis. Please send the name of the company, the address of the company, and contactinformation of your advisor at the company (name, e-mail address, phone number) to your supervisor at our institute.
- The short summary of your topic/task and a working title for the thesis (see above) generally are proposed by the external company and then approved by our institute, possibly after some modifications. Please forward this information as early as possible to your supervisor at our institute.
- When signing your contract with us, we will ask you whether your thesis can be published after the submission. Please verify beforehand whether your company allows for publication of the thesis.
- Please note that if the company asks for a non-disclosure agreement, this must be set up between the company and the institute (or between you, the institute and the company; but never just between you and the company).
- You have an advisor at the external company and a supervisor at our institute. The advisor typically is your first point of contact in case of problems. The supervisor is your contact for all administrative and examination related questions. This includes, for example, questions regarding the format and content of your thesis, structure, citation style, ... .
- If the topic has to be modified, e.g., because some originally planned goal turned out to be unachievable, this has to be discussed with and confirmed by your supervisor at our institute.
Form of the Thesis
- You have to write your thesis in LaTeX using the template from https://github.com/latextemplates/scientific-thesis-template . 1)
- Keep the form requirements from the computer science department in mind (see link at the top). The template should already meet those by default.
- There is no fixed page count or limit. The number of pages strongly depends on the specific topic of the thesis.
- You can write the thesis in German or in English. If you write in German, do not translate technical terms; use the English version for those.
- Use a numerical-only bibliography style, e.g., numeric (see bibstyle and citestyle in config.tex ).
1) Have a look at the documentation before using it – the template has a lot of options.
Presentation After the Submission
- In most cases, the length of the presentation is 30 minutes. After your presentation the audience will ask some questions about your thesis.
- The presentation is not graded separately, but will influence the final grade of the thesis.
- There is no mandatory template for presentation slides.
- Please follow the advice for good presentations from our seminars. If you did not attend one of our seminars, ask your supervisor.

Stuttgart Dissertations
All information on the publication process of your dissertation as part of your doctoral degree studies.
(Icon: info)
Submission of the mandatory copies and the corresponding documents HERE
The publication of the dissertation is part of the doctoral degree studies. A prescribed number of mandatory copies has to be submitted to the University Library within one year after the oral examination (within two years for the humanities). The submission of the mandatory copies of the dissertation and their form are specified in the current Doctoral Degree Regulations of the University of Stuttgart.
Doctoral students who were accepted or admitted to doctoral degree studies before the new version of the Doctoral Degree Regulations (April 1, 2019) came into effect can still complete their doctoral degree studies according to the Doctoral Degree Regulations 2016 (DE) . However, please take note that interim regulations must be complied with (cf. sec. 21 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations 2019 ).
Publication Types
The number of mandatory copies to be submitted (see sec. 13, par. 2 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations 2019) and which further documents we require from you depends on the type of publication. Even if the doctoral degree studies are completed in accordance with older Doctoral Degree Regulations, doctoral students are free to publish the dissertation according to the terms of sec. 13 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations 2019.
Electronic Publication on the Publication Server of the University of Stuttgart (OPUS)
You publish the dissertation via the University Library, freely accessible online. Further information on Publishing with OPUS Further information on the procedure for Dissertations
We need from you:
- the electronic version For this purpose, please log in to OPUS and upload the file(s) including the description of your work via an online form.
- 6 printed copies
- the licensing terms (DE) filled out and signed by you
Please note the guidelines for the outer form below.
Publication in a Publishing House
A commercial publisher handles the production and distribution via bookstores.
- 6 copies of the publisher’s edition
- the publisher’s evidence of a print run of at least 150 copies or confirmation that the title will be available for at least four years in case of Print on Demand
Self-printing
You commission a printer or a print shop with the printing of your dissertation.
- 34 printed copies
Publication as Volume of an Institution Series
If your dissertation is released within a series published by an institution of the University of Stuttgart, the number of mandatory copies to be submitted and which further documents we need from you depend on the publication type of the series.
- If the series is published electronically, the regulations for the electronic publication apply.
- If the series is released in a publishing house, the regulations for publisher releases apply.
- If the series is published by the institute itself, the regulations for self-printing apply.
Publication as Special Print
You publish your dissertation in a journal. In the journal the work has to be marked as dissertation in a footnote. The journal title, the year (or volume), and the page number have to be absolutely clear from the copies to be submitted.
- 6 copies of the special print
Guidelines for the Outer Form of the Publication
The outer form of the respective publication type is regulated in the „ Leaflet for Doctoral Students Regarding the Outer Form of the Dissertations " (appendix to the Doctoral Degree Regulations, only available in German).
Please pay attention to the following:
- At least the mandatory copies to be submitted must contain a German and a usually English abstract
- In case of being published in a publishing house, the entire edition has to be marked as dissertation by imprinting the code number "D 93" (stands for "Dissertation of the University of Stuttgart"). "D 93" can only be omitted if the entire edition contains the indication in plain writing that it is a dissertation or if the dissertation title page is the only title page.
- The dissertation must be printed on both sides.
- The binding type must not be a spiral binding, but a durable binding, e.g. adhesive binding.
- Due to the long-term archiving, recycling paper must not be used. If possible, the dissertation should be printed on acid-free paper.
- Standard format of the printed copies is DIN A5. In special cases, e.g. works with larger drawings and tables, other formats may be used, preferably DIN A4. However, this must be approved by the doctoral committee depending on the faculty or institution.
Please inquire further specifications from the office of the dean responsible for you. In cases of doubt, only the responsible doctoral committee is authorized to make decisions, not the library or the main reporter (see sec. 7, par. 1 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations).
Submission to the University Library
Both the mandatory copies and the corresponding documents have to be submitted at:
University of Stuttgart Library Team Publication Services (T3) Holzgartenstr. 16 70174 Stuttgart
The „Dissertation Office“ is located on the ground floor (room 00.098). Please make an appointment for the submission with us beforehand:
- +49 711 685-83512
Alternatively, you can ask someone else to submit both your dissertation and the corresponding documents or send them to us via mail. In your package please include your contact details (address, telephone number, email address) and the address of your main reporter.
Further Procedure
As soon as we have received everything in correct and complete form, we send 4 copies of the dissertation to the main reporter (in accordance with sec. 13, par. 4 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations). The main reporter compares the copies to the manuscript and reports the correspondence by forwarding one copy to the respective office of the dean. Clearance is given by the dean or the chairperson of the doctoral committee. The office of the dean informs both the University Library and the examination office of the clearance. The examination office issues the certificate and we add the dissertation to the library holdings and release the electronic version, if applicable.
Completed Dissertations
An overview of dissertations completed in Stuttgart, sorted by faculty, can be found in the biannually published directory "Dissertationen und Habilitationsschriften der Universität Stuttgart" .

Master Thesis
All necessary information about writing an INFOTECH master thesis
Please be advised: You must register your thesis with the examination office as soon as your have a topic.
Master thesis projects are issued by the INFOTECH professors/institutes. It is necessary to check with the institute’s black board or home page for project topics. In some cases, and based on the approval by the Examination Committee, master thesis topics may also be issued by professors of the Faculty for Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology who are not participating in the INFOTECH program or by professors of other faculties or universities.
Similar to examination problems, thesis topics are handed out to the candidate in written form. They should contain a detailed description of the research objectives and a list of tasks to be addressed. Additionally the starting date and last date of submission are to be confirmed by the thesis supervisor’s signature.
The normal duration of a master thesis is six months. At the candidate’s request, it may be extended to a maximum of 9 months, if adequate reasons are provided and the advisor and the chairman of the Examination Committee approve. Please see here for more information regarding extensions.
When writing the master thesis, the student has to prove his ability to work independently on a problem and to solve it with the tools acquired in the course of his studies. Regular meetings with the advisor or thesis supervisor (eg. every 2 weeks) to discuss the progress of the master thesis are strongly recommended to help recognize potential problems early and attain additional guidance. The master thesis project is completed with the submission of the master thesis and a presentation and defense in the institute’s colloquium.
According to the examination regulations, it is possible to return a thesis topic once without any consequences within the first four weeks after registering. A completed master thesis project being marked not sufficient can be repeated once.
The master thesis should be completed in english. Exceptions in german can be made for non-native german speaking students. The submission of a linguistically correct thesis is the responsibility of the student. Ask friends or colleagues to proof-read your thesis. Furthermore the form, i.e. the structure of the report, layout and drawings, clear phrasing, references etc. is also very important. It may not just your supervisor who reads it, but also coworkers, followers, the industry or somebody else who should be impressed by the thesis report. Therefore having a polished thesis and taking such elements into consideration can positively contribute to the grading.
Registration:
Access to the registration form in C@mpus becomes active once 78 ECTS credits have been completed. It is not possible to register before this. Once you have approval of your topic with your advisor your should register it with the examination office without delay. Your thesis can be registered at any point during the year - registration is not bound to normal registration dates.

Thesis Topics, Study and Research Projects
Our institute always searches for motivated students who want to do a bachelor or master thesis, a study or research project. The information below in general applies also to research and study projects from different study programs, except that they have less workload than a thesis.
HOCOS Bachelor / Master Theses
Our institute always searches for motivated students who want to do a bachelor or master thesis.
Please download the presentation of our Research Interests and Your Opportunities
Details on what we are currently working on is available in this presentation, as well as on our teaching offers and information about theses in general.
Frequently asked questions regarding Bachelor and Master theses
Thank you for your interest in writing a thesis in our department. A thesis is, in most cases, the part of your education where you get closest to actual science, and we are committed to make this essential period of your life successful, plannable, but also enjoyable! We have put together answers to several frequently asked questions. Note that they relate to the Hardware-oriented Computer Science group (HOCOS, Prof. Polian).
Where can I find a list of available topics?
We do not have such a list. Instead, we formulate, together with you, a topic that is related to what we are working on and that at the same time fits your interests and qualifications. Please contact Maël Gay for anything related to theses and research projects. We will then organize an appointment.
What documents should I enclose to this email?
Our questionnaire (“ Expression of Interest ”) and your current grade sheet. If you have completed a degree already, add the grade sheet from that degree. We may request further documents later.
What will happen during this appointment?
Most likely, you will hear questions about what kind of topics you are interested in and what skills you want to develop or improve during your thesis. For example, you may be interested in a more theoretical study, methodical work, put focus on software development or hardware design, and/or work on a specific domain. We will also ask about your prior experiences and qualifications (which subjects you took and which programming/description languages and tools you are familiar with).
Can I suggest my own topic?
Yes! But please understand that we cannot supervise you in areas outside our expertise. Even if you are not certain, make a suggestion and let’s discuss further. For example, we cannot supervise work on pedestrian recognition, because we are (currently) not working on it, but we could develop a topic such as making existing pedestrian-recognition methods more reliable or secure.
Can I write my thesis in a company?
This is possible in principle but under specific conditions. In short, topics formulated and announced by companies without any prior interaction with us are not suitable in 99% of cases. We strongly prefer topics within a framework of running collaborations; please ask us if you are interested. If the company has no running cooperation with us (yet) but is willing to discuss the topic and develop it, we are open. In a nutshell, the topic must fall into our areas of competence and have a scientific background and at least a slight methodical component; we will not “supervise” (re-)implementation projects. It must be clear to you that all expectations on an academic thesis apply (for example, we expect a review of scientific literature on the topic even if the industrial partner is not interested in it). Having to rely on your cooperation partner regarding, e.g., access to data or software, constitutes a risk, and you alone are bearing this risk. Moreover, all questions regarding intellectual property, non-disclosure or publishing of the results of the thesis must be settled before you begin the work. This step can involve the University’s legal department and can lead to delays of unknown duration. Note that Master theses must be reviewed by two professors, and if the company is insisting on a non-disclosure agreement, it will be your job to find the second reviewing professor and convince him or her to sign that agreement.
What prerequisites should I have?
We strongly prefer candidates who took our courses (e.g., RO2 in Bachelor; EDA, HOS, RSD in Master) and passed them with a good grade (2.3 or better). Moreover, you should have done a seminar, ideally one that had been offered by our department (then you know our expectations on writing, presenting, deadlines etc. to some extent). You do need in-depth knowledge in one of our areas of expertise to write a meaningful thesis, and if you did not take advanced courses in our field, you will have to acquire this knowledge through self-study at the same time as working on the actual thesis. Please understand that we cannot guarantee accepting you even if you took a course with us, as this depends on our current workload and capacity.
We found a suitable topic; how do we proceed?
You will be asked to formulate, in your own words, a 1-2 page summary of the objectives for your work (similar to a proposal). It will usually go through several iterations, and the final agreed-upon text will be the basis for evaluation of what you have achieved in the end. The purpose of having this text is to avoid later misunderstandings what you were supposed to do and what not. After this summary has been fixed, we will make a supervision contract; you may have to sign a few documents if you will need to use our lab facilities, software, equipment, and the like.
Can I take a few weeks/months off during my thesis work?
This is an extremely bad idea. Once you register your thesis, the clock starts ticking and you must submit whatever you have by the end of the period. If you have an exciting trip, a multi-week visit to your relatives, an internship or some other interesting activity incompatible with the thesis, please start your thesis after this activity or, even better, delay your activity until after the thesis. It is equally undesired that you request a topic, get a suggestion, and then disappear without registering the thesis. Expect that “your” topic will be given to somebody else in such a case and will not be reserved for you. If you do have a justification for a break (e.g., a sickness or an unforeseeable family situation), apply for an extension through the Examination Office. Whether the extension will be granted will be decided by that office, and our staff will not be involved in this decision.
Can my research be published?
It is quite common that a thesis work results in a scientific publication. If work that resulted from a thesis is presented at a conference, we will try to support you attending that conference.
How do I write up the thesis?
You can orient yourself on our documentation on how to write seminar summaries. In short, your text should give the reader the answer to the following questions:
- What problem are you solving? Is it of practical or theoretical importance, or both? Are there specific application scenarios that would benefit from your result?
- What fundamentals are required to formulate the problem and your solution approach?
- Are you the first person trying to solve this problem, or has there been other work on it? Who else was or is considering this problem, and how does your approach differ? What are the key differences from related problem formulations?
- What approach do you follow to solve the problem, and why? What do you expect to achieve? For instance, do you want to answer a question for the first time, to improve an existing solution, to transfer an approach into a setting where it has not been used before?
- What did you achieve after your work, and how does this relate to the expectations you had upfront? What methods to validate the correctness and/or performance of your solution exist in principle, which of these methods did you employ, and what came out? If you had a hypothesis, could you verify or falsify it? If you wanted to improve something, did you improve it, and by how much? Note that failure to achieve the initial objectives is normal in non-trivial scientific work and does not necessarily lead to a bad grade; what matters is your methodology, hardness of evidence, and what you learned from the (negative) outcome.
We do not require a rigid structure of your thesis, but you can start with five chapters following the five points above (Introduction; Preliminaries; Related Work; My Solution; Experimental Results) and refine this structure if needed. Add an abstract (half a page) and a conclusion with an outlook. When writing, assume that the reader knows the fundamentals of Computer Science from the first two years of a Bachelor program. Provide intuition of what you are doing, but not at the expense of correctness; in particular, demonstrate your ability to work rigorously in the Preliminaries session.
Are there formal requirements beyond this document?
Yes, please check the regulations of the Examination Office (in German): www.f05.uni-stuttgart.de/informatik/fachbereich/pruefungsausschuesse/
For InfoTech students, there is some further information on an English website: www.infotech.uni-stuttgart.de
