Short Speech on Good Manners

Possessing good manners refers to one's ability to behave properly in social situations. Living a social life depends greatly on having decent manners. Particularly in youngsters, it should be instilled from an early age. The most crucial aspect of our nature and life is how we behave, whether it is in a good or negative way. While bad manners disgrace us, good manners assist us in gaining respect and dignity in society. Good manners give a proper shaping to a personality.

Good manners makes every person extraordinary in their own way. In everyday life, manners are crucial. Our body language, temperament, demeanour, civility, and manners are all reflected in them. We do our duties in every aspect of life, and our moral character is put to the test. Here are some examples of good manners.

Helping people.

Greetings others respectfully.

Say thank you after receiving something.

Say sorry after making any mistake.

Don't talk back.

We must constantly stand for people who are suffering.

Before touching or utilising someone else's property, we must obtain their consent.

When someone speaks to us, we should pay close attention.

We should always compliment individuals on their positive traits and actions.

To leave a positive impression on others in daily life, good manners are crucial. They aid in enhancing your sense of self-worth and identity. Good manners should be used anywhere you go, including at home with children, at work with coworkers, and with friends.

Long Speech on Good Manners

Our character is created by our manners. Both good and bad manners are possible. Our reputation is ruined by bad manners. It is referred to as bad manners when we treat people poorly, such as when we are impolite or fail to communicate with them appropriately.

Children should start learning manners at a young age.We rarely lose the virtues and conduct that were instilled in us as children. Good manners are a set of characteristics that support us in life. A person should always act politely. That demonstrates moral integrity. A person's good manners are not truly a part of them if they are only used when there is a profit to be gained or to make others think well of them.

Practicing Good Manners

I believe that using excellent manners is essential for success in daily life. The modern man is hard-pressed and impatient. In order to function in society, one must also develop social graces. These are frequently referred to as manners or etiquettes. For instance, if there isn't another seat available, one must offer one to an elderly person. One must cover their lips with a handkerchief or at the very least their hand when they cough or sneeze in public.

Additionally, when in a social setting, one must wait their turn to speak. It's impolite to interject in other people's conversations. Students who behave well benefit from their own personal development and become better people overall. Anyone who is kind to us deserves our gratitude. Being polite is essential to having a great and honourable personality in society. It supports our soul's and mind's positivity. Our admirable conduct demonstrates the strength of our character. To foster constructive contact, we ought to reverence and respect others.

Examples of Good Manners

When you first meet someone, introduce yourself by name. Introduce yourself by name and ask the person you are meeting with their name if you haven't met them previously.

For example, You may say, "Hello, my name is James. Which is yours?" When it comes to introductions, different cultures and nations have distinct customs, so be sure you are aware of them where you are.

Use the words "please" and "thank you" while making requests. Start with saying "please" whenever you need to make a request or need anything. In this manner, it won't appear as though you are expecting the other person to perform tasks for you.

For instance, you might ask, "Could you hand me that book please?" Upon receiving the book, "Would you kindly hand the book to me?" Say "Thank you" after receiving the book.

To demonstrate that you are kind and considerate, offer to assist others. Ask if there is anything you can do for someone if you see them in need.

Take the time to help the other person if the request is reasonable and you can complete it without difficulty. You might not always need to ask someone for aid. You can give your seat on a bus to someone who needs to sit down, or you can hold a door open for someone who is approaching from behind.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Good [morning/afternoon/evening],

I stand before you today to talk about something we all hold dear – friendship. We are born into families, but we choose our friends, and in that choice lies the greatest gift of life.

In the unit on relationships, we explore the intricate bonds we share with our families, but let us not overlook the incredible significance of our friends. A day without friends seems almost unimaginable, doesn’t it? They are the companions who stand by us through thick and thin, sharing both our sorrows and joys.

Friendship is not just a bond; it’s a lifeline. In times of trouble, our friends are the ones who rejuvenate our spirits, offering not only a listening ear but also genuine moral support. The laughter we share with them lightens our burdens, and the empathy they provide makes the tough times a bit more bearable.

So, let us cherish and celebrate the greatest gift of life – friendship. In our friends, we find not just companionship, but a reflection of our true selves. As we navigate the journey of life, let’s appreciate the unique and irreplaceable role our friends play.

[Optional: You can end with a quote about friendship or a call to the audience to reflect on and appreciate their friendships.]

In the unit on attitude, we uncover the profound connection between courage and success. As the saying goes, “ Experience is the hardest teache r; it gives you the test first and the lesson afterward.” Similarly, courage is the guiding force that transforms those lessons into stepping stones toward success.

Courage is not the absence of fear but the triumph over it. It bestows upon us the power to pursue what truly matters, empowering us to chase after our goals with determination. It acts as a catalyst, propelling us beyond our comfort zones and reinforcing our self-confidence. With courage, we come to believe in our abilities, realizing that challenges are not roadblocks but growth opportunities.

Success often lies on the other side of fear. It is the courage to face uncertainties, to take calculated risks, and to persevere in the face of adversity that leads to triumph. So, let us cultivate courage in our attitudes, for it is the compass that directs us on the path to success. Remember, the test of experience becomes a testament to our courage.

[Optional: Encourage the audience to embrace challenges with courage and turn obstacles into opportunities.]

In today’s fast-paced life, where time seems to slip through our fingers, it’s crucial to reflect on the often overlooked but essential aspect of our well-being— physical games and exercise.

Our modern lifestyles are marked by hectic schedules and sedentary habits, leading to a decline in physical activity. However, the importance of incorporating physical games and exercise into our daily routines cannot be overstated. These activities are not merely a means to stay fit; they contribute significantly to our overall mental and physical health.

Engaging in physical games and exercise is an antidote to the stress and pressures of our fast-paced lives. They enhance our cardiovascular health, boost our energy levels, and improve our mood by releasing endorphins—the feel-good hormones. Additionally, regular exercise is proven to enhance cognitive function, fostering better concentration and creativity.

In a world dominated by screens and constant connectivity, physical games provide a refreshing break and an opportunity for social interaction. Whether it’s team sports or individual workouts, these activities build camaraderie, discipline, and resilience.

Therefore, let us recognize the importance of prioritizing physical games and exercise in our lives. By doing so, we not only invest in our physical health but also cultivate a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle in the face of today’s relentless pace.

Good morning, respected teachers, and dear friends,

I stand before you today to shed light on a topic that holds the key to our overall well-being – the importance of maintaining a healthy diet. In the hustle and bustle of our lives, it’s easy to overlook the significance of what we consume daily.

Our bodies are our most valuable assets, and the fuel we provide them determines how well they function. A healthy diet is not just about watching our weight; it is about nourishing our bodies with the essential nutrients they need to thrive. It fuels our energy, supports our immune system, and promotes mental clarity.

In a world filled with tempting fast food and sugary treats, it’s crucial to make mindful choices. A balanced diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and proteins, ensures that our bodies receive the necessary vitamins and minerals for optimal performance.

So, let us pledge to prioritize our health by making conscious choices about the food we consume. Remember, a healthy diet is not a sacrifice; it is an investment in our well-being. Let’s start our day by choosing nutritious meals that empower us to face the challenges ahead.

Today, I want to share some thoughts on a topic that is close to my heart – the significance of siblings in our lives . As Sameer/Siya, a seventh-grader, I believe that our relationships with our siblings are some of the most precious bonds we form.

In the unit ‘Relationships’ from our English Reader, we’ve explored the dynamics of family ties. Our siblings, be they older or younger, play a unique role in shaping who we are. They are our partners in crime, our confidantes, and our lifelong friends.

Through shared experiences, we learn valuable life lessons and develop qualities like patience, understanding, and cooperation. Our siblings are there with us through thick and thin, celebrating our triumphs and providing solace during challenges. In essence, they are our companions on this journey called life.

We need to appreciate and nurture these relationships. While we may have our differences, the love and support we receive from our siblings are unparalleled. So, let’s take a moment to express gratitude for the significance of siblings in our lives. They are not just family; they are our allies, making the journey of growing up all the more memorable.

In the delicate balance of nature, there exists a profound truth – “ Nature has enough for man’s needs but not enough for man’s greed. ” These words, echoing the wisdom of Mahatma Gandhi, implore us to reflect on our relationship with the environment.

Our Earth, our home, provides us with an abundance of resources to fulfill our genuine needs. However, as stewards of this planet, we must recognize the consequences of unchecked greed. Exploitative practices, deforestation, and pollution jeopardize the delicate ecosystems that sustain life.

It is our shared responsibility to preserve the beauty and vitality of our home for ourselves and the generations yet to come. Sustainable living, conservation efforts, and responsible consumption are not just buzzwords; they are the keys to ensuring a harmonious coexistence with nature.

Let us embrace a collective consciousness that acknowledges the finite resources of our Earth. By fostering an attitude of respect and gratitude towards nature, we can strive to be mindful custodians, ensuring that the legacy we leave for future generations is one of environmental stewardship and not depletion.

 Thank you.

Respected teachers, dear students, and honored guests,

I stand before you today to emphasize the crucial role that each one of us, as students, plays in the conservation of our environment . Our actions, no matter how small, collectively contribute to the well-being of our planet.

Firstly, let’s consider the significant impact of waste reduction. By being mindful of our consumption and adopting practices like recycling, we actively participate in reducing the burden on landfills and conserving valuable resources. Additionally, let’s commit to minimizing paper wastage by utilizing both sides of sheets and embracing digital alternatives whenever possible.

Conserving existing resources is another responsibility we hold. Whether it’s water, energy, or natural habitats, our choices matter. Turn off electrical appliances when not in use, as this not only saves energy but also contributes to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Let’s be champions of water conservation by using it judiciously in our daily activities.

Furthermore, consider the products we use daily. Opting for non-toxic cleaners and embracing biodegradable products ensures that our daily routines are not harming the environment. Small changes in our lifestyle choices can collectively make a significant impact.

In conclusion, the role of students in the conservation of the environment is pivotal. By incorporating these simple habits into our lives, we become ambassadors for a sustainable future. Let us be conscious consumers and stewards of this planet, ensuring that our actions today contribute to a healthier and greener tomorrow.

Respected teachers, dear friends, and honored guests,

Today, I am honored to speak about a topic that holds immense significance in our lives— the importance of grandparents . In the unit “ Relationships ” from our English Reader, we’ve explored the profound connections we share with our family members, and among these connections, the role of grandparents is truly special.

Grandparents serve as the living chronicles of our family’s history, offering a wealth of stories, traditions, and wisdom. Their presence provides a sense of continuity and identity, connecting us to our roots and heritage. In a world that’s constantly evolving, this link with the past is invaluable.

Through their experiences and anecdotes, grandparents become our storytellers, passing down not just tales of bygone eras but also lessons learned from a lifetime. Their unconditional love and guidance shape us into the individuals we are meant to become.

In a fast-paced world, where time often moves too quickly, the slower pace of a grandparent’s wisdom and affection serves as a grounding force. They are our pillars of strength, offering support and understanding during both triumphs and tribulations.

So, let us recognize and cherish the importance of grandparents in our lives. Their presence is a source of comfort, guidance, and a reminder of where we come from. Today, let’s express our gratitude for the love and wisdom bestowed upon us by these special individuals.

Respected teachers, dear friends, and cherished guests,

I am delighted to share thoughts on a relationship that holds a unique place in our lives—the bond between siblings. As explored in the unit “Relationships” from our ‘My English Reader,’ the role of siblings is truly multifaceted, encompassing various roles that shape our journey through life.

A sibling is not just a family member; they are a guide, a friend, a mentor, a competitor, and a teacher, all rolled into one. Growing up with a sibling means having a constant companion to share laughter, joy, and even the occasional squabble. They are our partners in crime, creating a treasure trove of shared memories that accompany us through the years.

Beyond the camaraderie, siblings often take on the roles of mentors and teachers, offering guidance and support in times of need. Their experiences become valuable lessons, helping us navigate the challenges of life. Moreover, the friendly competition between siblings fosters resilience and determination, preparing us for the broader world.

In moments of celebration or sorrow, a sibling is there to share the highs and lows of life. This unique bond contributes to the formation of our identities, providing an unrivaled support system.

Let us celebrate and appreciate the role of siblings in our lives. They are not just family; they are lifelong companions, enriching our journey with shared experiences, lessons, and, above all, unconditional love.

In the journey of life, two indispensable virtues stand out – experience and courage. As we explore the concept of courage through the lens of the unit on attitude, it becomes evident that courage is the dynamic force propelling us toward success.

“Experience is the hardest teacher; it gives you the test first and the lesson afterward.” These words remind us that life’s challenges are inevitable, but it’s the courage to face them head-on that transforms these tests into valuable lessons. Courage, in essence, is the catalyst for growth.

Courage provides the power to pursue what is important to us. It is the driving force behind our ambitions, propelling us to chase our dreams with determination. Beyond that, courage acts as a powerful ally, bolstering self-confidence and instilling the belief that we are capable of overcoming any obstacle.

Crucially, courage does not signify the absence of fear but rather the triumph over it. It is the ability to confront our fears and move forward despite them that leads to success. Each step taken with courage opens new doors and paves the way for accomplishments.

In conclusion, let us embrace courage as the guiding force on our path to success. It’s not just a virtue; it’s the key that unlocks our potential and turns aspirations into achievements. So, let courage be our compass as we navigate the journey towards a successful and fulfilling life.

Our unity in diversity is a theme resonating from the unit “Unity in Diversity.” It’s fascinating how, despite the myriad cultures and traditions that paint our nation, there is an invisible thread of connection that ties us as one people. This strange feeling is the acknowledgment that, beyond our differences, we are all part of the greater human family.

India, with its varied people and cultures, stands as a living testament to the idea that diversity is not a source of division but a celebration of unique identities coming together. Our differences are the colors that paint the canvas of our nation, creating a vibrant and harmonious portrait.

Let us take pride in this diversity and, at the same time, celebrate our shared humanity. Varied people, and varied cultures, but one humanity—this is the essence that defines the spirit of our incredible nation. Through understanding, acceptance, and unity, let us continue to cherish and preserve this unique identity that makes India truly special.

Essay on Importance of Good Manners

How a person behaves towards the other can be termed ‘manner’. Manners play an important part in everyone’s life. Someone’s manners can tell us so many things about that person, like their background, their education etc. But ‘Manner’ is a general term, that is to say, it does not necessarily mean that manners are always good, though they always should be good, if not cultivated properly they can be bad, which is generally termed as ‘bad – Manners’. And therefore, manners, that is to say, ‘Good Manners’ are cultivated in every child from childhood.

The learning of manners starts from the home since parents are the first teacher of the child, the parents also become the first to teach manners to the child. But one thing to understand here is that the mind of a human is receptive, and hence we, the human, receive or rather learn and grasp so many things that happen in our surroundings. And this surrounding also up to an extent plays a role in the cultivation of manners in the child.

Hence, good surroundings cultivate good manners and vice-versa.

Afterwards, the parents and the surrounding school and teachers play an important part in teaching good manners to the students. For instance, the students must greet the teacher good morning, or good afternoon (according to the time) whenever the teacher enters the classroom, also the use of phrases such as “may I come in” and “may I go” are taught to be used in the school. And these phrases remain with the students for the rest of their life.

Understanding Good Manners

The one thing to understand here is that good manners are not formalities, neither are they social protocol or the rules, which one has to follow to avoid the fine. But it is something that comes from the inside most naturally and by itself, it is something that should not be forced or faked. The way in which we want others to behave with us is also how they want us to behave to them, it can be the simplest way to understand good manners.

People with good manners are liked by everyone, while on the other hand, those who do not possess good manners are more often than not despised by others. It does not matter how wealthy one is, how well educated one is, or how great marks one managed to score, if the person does not possess good manners people are not going to admire him. But if the person knows how to act and behave with others, then everyone likes that person. Also, good manners turn into good nature, and a person who has a good nature is liked by everyone.

Keeping in mind future aspects, a child needs to develop traits as polite, calm, and patient. Since childhood, we have taught of maintaining hygiene habit after having lunch or dinner, while eating or drinking not to make bad sound, say THANKYOU and SORRY are the important words to use while making in conversation, keeping own belonging in exact place after taking out from the place, brushing off teeth and bath daily, do not disturb others while working something important task, always take permission for picking up thing while visiting any neighbor place, always mention PLEASE word for requesting or asking for something and so on.

At School: School manners consist of some different patterns of ethics that need to be followed by the child. These are some major qualities that help children in enhancing good manners in all aspects.

Good Manners vs Discipline

There is a thin line between these two words which makes a big difference, generally, we cannot identify these differences. Good manners is completely associated with a  person's act or behavior such as politeness, patience, good listener, courtesy, helping nature and so on are some of the traits that signify good manners. Whereas Discipline describes a person's own set of rules and standards which he/ she follows throughout their life for example if a person is a smoker but here his discipline says not to smoke in front of parents or any elders this follows as same by any means.

When you meet a person with a lot of knowledge and wisdom but has an arrogant attitude towards everyone, you will not remember the person. On the contrary, if you meet a person who behaves well, you will remember the person for the rest of your life, irrespective of their status or background.

Let us look at how to write a paragraph on good manners. Go through the following samples and try writing one on your own.

Good manners and ethics are a product of one’s upbringing. No one can teach you how to behave in every situation. It is up to your own conscience to show good behaviour towards people. When you put others before yourself, it shows your selfless qualities, and you get genuine good behaviour in return. You would be considered a good human being or a good-mannered person if you know how to respect everyone’s feelings, are real and genuine, understand the emotions of others, and always have a humble attitude towards everyone around you. It can be seen when a guest visits you — your behaviour towards them will be a reflection of your manners. Showing respect and good manners to others does not harm anyone, so be well-mannered always.

When you respect others and their feelings, you will be respected. You would have come across the famous saying, ‘You reap what you sow’. It is the same in the case of respect too. You earn respect only when you respect everyone else and their opinions, thoughts and emotions. When you keep others before you and your happiness, you will be appreciated. These ethics are not taught to anyone; they should come from genuine kindness. Having a polite attitude to people shows what kind of a person you are. A good-mannered person makes the people around them comfortable and spreads positivity. There might be times when you feel you get nothing in return even though you only do good to others. The most important fact that you have to teach yourself is to be kind no matter what. Make sure that you never forget your manners and that you treat everyone well, irrespective of each other’s social and cultural status.

A wise person knows their own integrity and ethics.  They help others even without them asking for it. Being thankful, polite, kind, generous, considerate and respectful are some qualities of a good-mannered person. It leaves a positive impact on everyone around. Make sure to follow all that has been taught; carry it forward to future generations. One’s ethics and integrity can be reflected in the way one conducts oneself. Having a polite and humble attitude towards others would not harm anyone; it would, in fact, only create a positive outlook.

We should cultivate polite behaviour towards others and must have ears to listen to others with patience. This is how we will be loved by the people and remain in their hearts and minds. We should have a positive effect on the society we live in. Maintaining a strong connection with others is the key to achieving this favourable outcome. It is not only in our community, in fact, it is also in all the people around us. These motivations are formed in us as a result of our upbringing by our parents. Our behaviour is shaped by our good upbringing. Human ideals and good and bad manners – all play a role in moulding our character. These behavioural traits have an impact on our ability to achieve our goals. Having a respectful attitude towards others demonstrates good manners. A well-mannered individual helps others feel at ease and creates a positive impression. They understand how to be grateful to everyone and how to respect others’ feelings. As a result, even if you achieve a certain level of success, remember the support and efforts of your parents, family, and friends, as well as all those who stood by your side. Money or bribes will never buy you respect. Whatever values our parents, elders, and teachers instilled in us as children, we must pass them on to future generations. The manner in which we conduct ourselves reflects our ethics and integrity. Having a courteous and polite attitude toward others will not damage anyone; in fact, it will foster a positive and respectful attitude towards others.

Often they want to do things their way instead of following the rules of good manners.

They may run away from home or act rudely towards others. A period of rebellion should be treated as a time to learn good manners and respect for authority figures. This usually only lasts for a few years before they become more respectful adults.

Speech on Importance of Good Manners

April 16, 2018 by Study Mentor Leave a Comment

Good morning respected principle, teachers and all my dear friends today we have gathered and I am going to speak on the topic “good manners are important”. I beg you of your co operation throughout the time that I present my speech.

We all know that our society has developed through the ages. Man used to live a barbaric life earlier with herds of animals. He was rough and harsh. By and by as humans evolved, civilizations sprang up, man become gentler courteous.

He devised some norms of society which has to be followed to lead peaceful and normal life. His behaviour with others also changed with time. Before there was no specific method while mixing with others. But with the development of society words like ‘politeness’, ‘courtesy’, ‘manners’, ‘behaviour’ came into existence’.

Manners are what build our character. There can be good manners and bad manners. Bad manners are those that spoil our name. When we behave badly with others, when we are rude or do not talk to them properly for example at that time it is called bad manners.

But good manners are that which will help us to build a good impression about ourselves in the society. It frames our character. If we have a good character then people will want to be in our company. It sends off good vibes from us.

It is the children who have to be taught the proper manners. Children are like soft clay. Guardians and teachers are like their potters. They have to shape their character with their own hands. If the good manners are not taught right from childhood they’ll grow up to be individuals with bad manners in the near future.

It is hard to change some bad habits once you grow up. Nowadays teenagers are engrossed in smart phones. Maximum part of the day they spend looking at their 5-inch phone screens. How will they learn good manners if they have no contact with their family?

This is also the reason why there are so many news about the youngsters in the newspapers. Suicidal attempts, robbery, bomb blasts, maximum of them involve the teens.

But on the other side of the coin it is not like every teen is filled with bad manners. There are also individuals who are well behaved and possess all the qualities of good manners. This depends on the family backgrounds and also the environment one grows up in.

I am listing a few good manners that every child should be taught to follow.

  • Never cutting off someone’s sentence in the middle to project your views. First let the other person finish his speaking, then it will be your turn to speak
  • Always speaking in a low voice when you are in the company of elders. Respect their presence.
  • Leaving your seat in the local transport for the old people, ladies and children.
  • Not shaking legs when sitting at a table
  • Not to start eating when everyone is not at the table.
  • Washing hands before eating
  • Covering up the mouth with hands or cloth before sneezing or coughing.
  • Telling ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ whenever you ask for something or receive something.
  • Sharing is another important quality that has to be taught. Nobody likes a selfish kid
  • Saying ‘excuse me’. This shows that you have consideration for others.
  • Sitting in a good posture
  • Speaking less listening more. Good listeners are always more valuable than loud boasters.

There are many more such qualities which can be followed. Here is the list of only a few of them. We have to learn all the manners to lead a simple and healthy life. These points that I just stated are simple to follow right? Then why shouldn’t we do it? There are people whose behaviour changes with the places. If they are in some sophisticated place they behave according to that.

But at home their behaviour with their family members is very rough. Such people wear a mask of being good outside to show people. But at home their true face comes out. A person is a gentleman who when he maintains his good manners both outside as well as inside the house.

I want to conclude my speech by saying that whether you will build a good character for yourself or a bad one is entirely your choice. But whatever you choose to be, keep the future in mind. Bad actions can often lead to bad results. Every action has equal and opposite reaction.

2 Minute Speech On Good Manners In English

Good morning everyone present here, today I am going to give a speech on good manners. Parents teach good manners to their children so that they might begin to pick them up at an early age. They instruct kids on how to act around their neighbors, family, friends, and other nearby individuals. A person with good manners must possess a number of qualities, including modesty, humility, and kindness. One of the fundamental etiquettes that everyone learns from an early age is to shake hands with a smile and say “Namaste” to people.

One kind act is to respond to someone by saying “thank you.” We frequently use the words “sorry” and “pardon me” in daily life. In addition to all of this, proper manners include treating juniors and elders with love and respect. The traits of a well-mannered person also include asking permission before using anybody else’s property, giving older passengers a seat on public transportation, being modest and polite, and refraining from using vulgar or harsh language.

Good manners are always the key to making new contacts in life. Additionally, it makes life easier for us. A new conversation with others is made possible, and this is crucial for success in life. Good manners enable successful communication and fruitful debate. Positive attitudes improve the surroundings. It is essential for both the individual and society. However, it appears that the younger generation is losing sight of the value of manners on a daily basis. Thank you.

Arguing unnecessarily with people should be discouraged in children. Lessons in maintaining calm, self-regulation, and patience should be encouraged to avoid growing children into aggressive adults.

Mother teaching daughter to shop properly

Good manners, etiquette, and courtesy are the building blocks of society. They help build fruitful interactions and are synonymous with expressions of respect and compassion.

Can you imagine a world full of rude, aggressive, and impolite individuals? We bet you won’t feel good imagining it. Thus, the significance of good manners for preschoolers and kids cannot be overstated. Moreover, if we want to continue building a peaceful society, raising kids with good manners is essential.

Here are some benefits of good manners for kids that parents must know:

Inculcates Confidence and Self-Esteem

If a child knows how to act in a specific situation or with a group of people, it underlines the streak of confidence rooted in his personality. For this, making children understand basic social skills is a prerequisite. Good manners and etiquette are one of them.

Builds a Sense of Respect

At the heart of good manners lies respecting oneself and others. When a child learns to respect himself, he eventually grasps the idea of respecting people outside the home.

Fosters Relationship

One of the benefits of inculcating manners and etiquette in a child is that it develops a positive relationship with elders, peers, cousins, etc. Human relationships are fundamental to life. So making your kids learn the importance of their younger days serves them well for a lifetime.

Boosts Communication Skills

Communication skills are essential for the academic and professional growth of children. Hence, good manners and etiquettes are a window of opportunity to polish interactions and hone communication skills.

When a child knows that his behavior positively impacts the people around him, it develops a sense of joy and deep satisfaction in him. That joy further leads to many positives ahead in their life.

Parents teaching kids to clean

Every parent’s dream is to raise a child who practices politeness and other general good manners. However, most parents fail to realize their contribution to shaping the personality of their children. That’s where the car makes a drift.

Don’t get disheartened if you feel that you fall into that category. They say, ‘Better Late Than Never’.

Here’s a list of little things you should be mindful of while you continue imparting good manners lessons to your kids.

Model Manners

This is the most effective way to teach your kids about good manners and etiquette. As parents, we need to embody good characteristics in kids . We must be role models for them, and showing good manners is the first step. The best way is to address your little ones with the same calming attitude you expect them to show. Display a good example of manners in your actions and see how quickly your little one will grasp them and put them into action.

Starting with the Lessons Early

The best time to start with good manners and etiquette lessons is as soon as your baby completes 12 months in this world. Wondering why so early? Well, babies tend to begin observing by this age, and they try to mimic the actions of their parents. For Example, you can show your infant how to have good manners by putting their toys in the toy basket. Repeat the action for a few days and see how the infant would rush to do the same as he grows up. Similarly, teach polite words like ‘Please’ and ‘Thank You’ to your kids early; don’t wait for them to go to preschool to learn them.

Provide Examples

Manners and etiquette are defined by guidelines, but they can be supported with examples to form them into habits later. Being a parent, you must provide specific scenarios and discuss with your kid what needs to be done and when. Kids must understand the nature of the scenario and act accordingly. So, next time when you teach good manners to kids, keep some placards or activity cards handy to better equip them with proper actions, reactions, behavior, and speech.

Be Consistent

Like every other lesson, the outcomes of tutoring good manners are not achieved in a day. If you want your child to practice good manners and etiquette consistently, you must be consistent in repeating the actions as well as set some clear expectations. For Example, if you expect your child to keep his phone away at the dinner table, ensure they do so until it becomes a habit. If you expect your child to stand when elders enter the room, step in to remind them if they forget. The more steadfast parents are in displaying kindergarten manners, the more effective tutoring a kid becomes.

Correct Politely

In a rat race to be consistent, parents often punish their kids in case they fail to follow what they taught them. This is a big red flag and will cause more harm than good. If you see your child unable to grasp the lesson, try to understand what is lacking in your way of teaching in the first place. Normalize your child making more attempts than other children to act with good manners perfectly. If you politely correct them, it shows that they are being valued and will try to be better next time.

Compliment Good Behavior

A little compliment and appreciation go a long way in building a sense of fulfillment in humans, and children are no exception. As parents, it is on us to recognize the efforts of our kids and make them feel valued. For Example, when your kid correctly reciprocates ‘Thank You’, praise them. Or, when your kid helps without being reminded, tell them that you are proud of them. Acknowledging such little wins in life not only reinforces good conduct but it gives out a lesson that being considerate sparks joy in people.

With the ever-evolving times, teaching aids have become more accessible and creative. Below are a few interesting activities that parents can carry out to teach good manners and etiquette more effectively from the comfort of their homes.

Good Manner Chart

There are a variety of printable good manners charts available online that serve the purpose. They contain a list of situation-specific good manners that can be easily grasped by kids. Place them on the refrigerator or in the kitchen, and let your child take the initiative.

‘I Caught You Being Good’ Jar

Take an old jar and label it as ‘I Caught You Being Good’. Whenever your child exhibits good manners and etiquette, write it on a piece of paper and put it inside the jar. Count the number of chits in the jar monthly and reward your child for it.

Good Manners Journal

A great way to keep a tab on your child practicing good manners is to maintain a journal. Encourage your kid to write at least ten types of manners that he demonstrated in school daily. Set rewards commensurate with age and number of good manners on the list.

Board Games

Adding a fun element while teaching essential life skills helps children better understand the concepts. ‘Mind Your Manners’ is one such board game that may do the job. It’s widely available online and in stores near you.

Beads and the Ribbon

To check if your child reciprocates gratitude or not, this activity can be very helpful. Take a ribbon of your child’s favorite color and a box of beads. Whenever your child says ‘Thank You’ or shows gratitude, add a bead to the ribbon. And, whenever she forgets to show gratitude, tie a knot. Count the number of beads by the end of the month, and reward them as per your set limit.

Reading a Book About Manners

It’s time to cement good manners by reading a book to your kids. You can use the best reading websites for kids to undertake this activity. Stories have undoubtedly played a major role in shaping kids’ personalities since immemorial. With so many options to choose from, parents can pick the ones they like. Some recommended books about good manners are Please Say Please, Dude, That’s Rude- Get Some Manners, Are you Quite Polite, Perfect Pigs: An Introduction to Manners, and A is for Attitude: An Alphabet For Living.

We saw that teaching good manners to children has significant positive implications. To keep order and civility in society, we must raise kinder, more compassionate, and loving children. While teaching manners to little ones might sound like a daunting task, it can be accomplished by putting in small but significant efforts in daily life.

Parents must mold themselves and their kids in a way that the common etiquettes become their habits. Well, the rule? What you shall sow, you shall reap. Instilling good manners and etiquette is the most valuable gift parents can give their children.

What is the difference between manners and etiquette?

Manners broadly encompass the generalized behavior that reflects a person’s attitude, while Etiquettes are a set of rules or conduct. Respecting elders, speaking politely, and being kind are good manners while switching off the phone when in a cinema hall, sitting upright at the dinner table, etc., are examples of etiquette. Both being vital for the functioning of society, a good-mannered human is more likely to follow etiquette properly.

Is it too late to teach good manners to my child, who is in second grade?

Not at all. One thing that parents must remember is that manners cannot be forced. Rather, they can be imbibed through observation and practice at home. Secondly, regular communication between parents and kids is the key to their good manners. When you believe in yourself, the kids believe in you too. For children in the age group of 5-7 years, meaningful story books and pep talks work the best.

Do good manners help in leading a successful life ahead?

Once good manners are imbibed in a child, he repeats them until they become a habit. Good manners for kids play a significant role in making a positive impact on people, thereby boosting self-esteem and self-confidence. And, when a child grows up into a kind, confident, gracious, and compassionate adult, success is bound to follow.
