Independence Day 2023: Short Speech

Ladies and gentlemen,

Indian Independence Day is being commemorated today as one of the most important dates in the history of our magnificent country. We celebrate this day with pride as we reflect on the numerous sacrifices made by our ancestors to free our nation from colonial tyranny.

We honour visionary leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, and countless others who led the fight for liberation with unyielding tenacity and bravery on this auspicious day. As we enjoy the priceless gift of independence and sovereignty because of their unceasing labour and sacrifice.

As we hoist the tricolour, we must also pause to consider the ideals and guiding tenets of our independence movement: inclusion, diversity, and unity. To develop a more powerful and affluent India, individuals from all backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions have come together in our nation as it stands today.

While we celebrate our independence, we must be aware of the difficulties that still lie ahead. We must work to end social inequities, poverty, and illiteracy. Let's join to fight communalism, corruption, and any other forces that jeopardise the peace in our country.

As accountable citizens, let us promise to do everything in our power to advance and build our cherished nation. Let's defend the values of democracy, equality, and justice in remembrance of the sacrifices made by our freedom warriors.

Let's celebrate our freedom on this Independence Day, but let's also keep in mind our obligations and responsibilities to India's future. Together, we can make India a nation that excels internationally and continues to inspire the rest of the globe.

Jai Hind! Happy Independence Day!

Good morning to all of you, including the vice president, instructors, principal, and my dear students. To celebrate the 77th anniversary of our country's independence, we have all assembled here. We shall honour all the freedom fighters who dedicated their lives to preserve the nation's freedom on this important occasion.

British sovereignty over India ended on August 15, 1947. All of our fundamental rights were granted to us in our nation, our home. The British were brutal to our ancestors while they were in power. We can't imagine how difficult it must have been for India to live within the British Empire from where we are sitting. To achieve independence, countless millions of sacrifices were made over many years.

Numerous freedom fighters fought for independence throughout their entire lives. We can never forget the sacrifices of Lala Lajpat Rai, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh, Rani Lakshmibai, Khudiram Bose, Sukhdev Thapar, Vallabhbhai Patel, Mangal Pandey, Tatya Tope, Ram Prasad Bismil, Udham Singh, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, and many more who lost their lives just fighting for a better future.

We are incredibly grateful that our forebears battled to free us from British rule. They have contributed to our tremendous growth in the areas of technology, education, sports, and finance. With participation in competitions like the Asian, Commonwealth, and Olympic Games, the Indians are making progress.

On this significant day, it is now our responsibility to maintain the nation's honour, promote the nation, and enhance the nation. I wish everyone a Happy Independence Day and good luck for the future.

Thank You and Happy Independence Day to all of you!

Good Morning to all dignitaries and fellow mates who are present here.

On the eve of Independence Day, we honour the bravery and sacrifices of our Indian freedom heroes. When India became independent, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, our first Prime Minister, raised the tricolour flag at Delhi's Red Fort and Lahori Gate. This day has been observed as a separate holiday ever since. Numerous programs are dedicated in honour of the solemn occasion of the day during our Indian warriors' Red Fort-like march past, and schoolchildren fire 21 gunshots to signal the start of events and cultural performances. The Independence Day celebration also includes kite flying, which fills the sky with a variety of kites in all sizes, shapes, and colours. Later, starting in 1974, all of the various chief ministers unfurl the national flag.

The anniversary of the division of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan is another contemporary relevance of Independence Day. We are known for having the biggest democracy in the world. The UK Parliament approved the Indian Independence Act of 1947 on this day, granting the Indian country legislative authority.

Hope my words are enough to elate your happiness and patriotism. Happy Independence Day!

77th Independence Day 2023: Long Speech

Respected dignitaries, esteemed teachers, dear fellow students, and fellow citizens,

Today, as we gather here to commemorate the 76th Indian Independence Day, our hearts swell with pride and gratitude for the countless brave souls who fought relentlessly to liberate our beloved motherland from the clutches of British colonial rule.

The end of foreign rule and the start of a new era in Indian history are both marked by this day. It stands for the triumph of bravery, teamwork, and the tenacious spirit of the Indian people. Our fight for independence was more than just a political movement; it was a battle for our right to self-determination, fairness, and human decency.

We respectfully recall the inspirational leaders who guided us on this difficult road. The way of non-violence and civil disobedience, which became the pillar of our struggle, was demonstrated to us by Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our country. Our first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, laid the groundwork for the development of our country by envisioning a modern, forward-thinking India.

The key to realising our country's potential is education. Let's work to ensure that every child, regardless of circumstance, has access to an education. Not only is knowledge liberating, but it also lays the groundwork for a successful future.

Rural development must be given top priority in order to provide residents with access to necessities like clean water, healthcare, and sanitary facilities. By empowering our villages, we can achieve sustainable, balanced growth that benefits all of our citizens.

One of our biggest assets is our variety. Let's celebrate our variety and embrace our rich cultural heritage on this Independence Day. Together, we are stronger, and India stands out on the international stage because of its variety.

Lastly, let us never forget how difficult and costly it was to achieve our independence. As proud Indians, it is our responsibility to uphold the democratic, secular, and socially just ideals that our forefathers envisioned. Let's promise to be law-abiding, caring, and environmentally conscientious citizens who help our amazing country flourish and prosper.

On this day, we put aside our cultural differences and came together as true Indians. Young people need to be aware because they have the power to alter their country and the future of the country rests on them. Therefore, it is our responsibility to serve the country and work as hard as we can to improve society.

Nationalism and patriotism are present across the nation as a result of this day's commemoration. On this day, we also sense our pride and solidarity in the nation's diversity. India is a nation of people who practise several religions alongside one another, and a diversified society with a rich culture and heritage applauds this wonderful occasion with tremendous enthusiasm. We are happy, and it gives us greater motivation to defend our motherland against any assault on its sovereignty and integrity.

We the people can't miss taking some prominent freedom fighters without whom the dream of our independence was not possible including Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr Rajendra Prasad, Moulana Abdul Kalam Azad, Sukhdev, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Chandra Shekhar Azad, etc. Because of his sacrifice and labour, our nation is free from British rule. This is the day when every individual pays tribute to our freedom fighters and leaders.

Independence Day is celebrated differently around the world, but its value is universal. It serves as both a poignant reminder of the difficulties and sacrifices made in pursuit of freedom as well as a celebration of the advancements gained over the years. Therefore, remember to carry out your responsibilities to the country.

- Indian Independence Bill was introduced in the British House of Commons on July 4, 1947, and was passed within a fortnight. It marked the end of over 200 years of British rule on August 15, 1947.

Independence Day Speech for Students

Independence Day Speech for Students

A very good morning to the excellencies, respected teachers and my dear colleagues.

As we all gathered here to celebrate India's Independence Day. I am very happy to share my thoughts here on this great occasion. I am very grateful to my teacher to give me this special opportunity on the independence day of my country.

On this Day, India attained Independence from the British Empire by following nonviolent and civil disobedience movements.

Our country was ruled by the British for 200 years. They had come to India for trade and commerce, but they looted the nation’s wealth and exploited its citizens instead. Our ancestors fought for centuries before India gained independence on August 15, 1947.

This Day reminds us of the many sacrifices our freedom fighters made for the freedom movement and to get Independence from British rule.

So, today is also a day to honour those who gave their lives so that India could one day be an independent nation. We must promise to remain devoted, committed, and devoted to Mother India today.

Through these lines, I conclude my remarks by paying my respectful tribute and homage to those great souls by using the quote by Sarojini Naidu that,

“A country’s greatness lies in its undying ideal of love and sacrifice that inspire the mothers of the race.”

Jai Hind, Jai Bharat.

Greetings on this momentous occasion of India's Independence Day! Today, we gather to celebrate the remarkable journey of our nation towards freedom and sovereignty. This year, the 77th Indian Independence Day 2023 is being celebrated as ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, It's a day that echoes with the sacrifices of countless heroes who fought tirelessly for our liberty.

As we look back, August 15, 1947, marked the end of British colonial rule, and India emerged as a sovereign nation. Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Indian Prime Minister to raise the National Flag at the Red Fort near Delhi's Lahore Gate. Our struggle for independence was not just a political movement; it was a testament to the indomitable spirit of our people. From the non-violent resistance led by Mahatma Gandhi to the bravery of countless others, we stood united in our quest for self-determination.

On this auspicious day, let us remember and pay homage to those who laid down their lives for the cause of freedom. Their sacrifices have paved the way for the India we know today – diverse, vibrant, and resilient.

Independence Day is not just about the past; it's also a time to reflect on the present and envision our future. As citizens of this great nation, we bear the responsibility of upholding the principles of justice, equality, and fraternity. Let us work together to build a society where every individual has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their background.

In the face of challenges, let us draw inspiration from the unity that defined our struggle for independence. Our diversity is our strength, and by embracing it, we can overcome any obstacle that comes our way.

As we hoist our national flag today, let it be a symbol of our shared aspirations and commitment to a better tomorrow. Just like the color of our flag represents:

Saffron signifying courage and sacrifice

White signifies peace and truth

Green signifies faith and chivalry

Happy Independence Day to one and all! Jai Hind!

10 Lines Independence Day Short Speech in English

India gained independence on August 15th, 1947.

After independence, Indians acquired all their fundamental rights.

People celebrate Independence Day by hoisting the National Flag and reciting the National Anthem.

We should all be proud to be Indian, and we should admire our fortune to have been born in the land of Independent India.

From 1857 to 1947, the lives of many freedom fighters and several decades of struggle were sacrificed.

For the independence of India, an Indian soldier (Mangal Pandey) in the British force first raised his voice against the British.

Several great freedom fighters later struggled and dedicated their entire lives to India’s freedom.

The sacrifices of all the freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh, Khudi Ram Bose, and Chandra Sekhar Azad, who lost their lives at an early age just to fight for their country, can never be forgotten.

Gandhiji was a great Indian figure who gave the world a great lesson in non-violence.

We are so lucky to have been given a land of peace and happiness by our forefathers, where we can sleep all night without fear and enjoy the whole day at school or home.

Our Indian army is so brave that they are continuously fighting on borders in order to protect our country from any terrorist group.

To conclude, all that can be said is the freedom we enjoy today is priceless and it is the duty of every Indian citizen to preserve this Independence of our Nation. So we should never fail to value this freedom and preserve it wholeheartedly.

Independence Day 2023: Key points to prepare speech in English for students

This day marks the liberty of our nation from foreign invaders and a long struggling story in attaining this freedom..

Adarsh Srivastava

Back in 1947, the day mark the end of 190-year British rule and the journey from colonial control to full sovereignty. Independence Day becomes a moving homage, a remembrance of sacrifice, and a time for solidarity when the national flag soars high and the national anthem fills the air. The theme of Indian Independence Day 2023 is 'Nation First, Always First', a part of the grand “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” initiative.

How to prepare a speech for Independence Day

While preparing the Independence Day speech, one should keep the following points in mind.

  • When preparing for the Independence Day speech, you should bear in mind some vital topics as well as significant events and movements that contributed significantly to our independence.
  • First and foremost, we need to understand why we observe Independence Day on August 15 and why it took so long to acquire this freedom.
  • Since everyone is aware that we declared our independence from the British on August 15, 1947, this speech would be incomplete without describing the sacrifices made by our leaders and freedom fighters, without whom we would not be commemorating this day today.
  • The Satyagrah Movement, the Khilafat Movement, the Dandi March, the Bharat Chodo Andolan, the Champaran Agitation, and the Non-Cooperation Movement each ought to be mentioned in the Independence Day speech as significant uprisings.
  • In addition, it might cover the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, the Simon Commission's casualties, and the mass murder of Indians during World War II.
  • The formation of several committees and their benefits and losses should also be mentioned.
  • You can also mention the election held prior to independence, the creation of princely states and regions, the formation of two nations, the committee formed to draft the constitution and govern India after independence, some of the glorious years that followed independence, as well as the development our country has undergone.

From india’s g20 presidency to the challenges faced by the country on economic and climate fronts, president droupadi murmu touched upon various important topics during her address to the nation on the eve of the 77th independence day..

speech in english for independence day 2023

My Dear Fellow Citizens,

speech in english for independence day 2023

My heartiest greetings to all of you on our 77th Independence Day! It is a glorious and auspicious occasion for all of us. I am overjoyed to see that festivity is in the air. It is a matter of delight as well as pride for us to see how everyone – children, youth and the elderly, in cities and villages, everywhere in India – are excited and preparing to celebrate this festival of our freedom. The people have been celebrating ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ with great enthusiasm.

Independence Day celebrations also remind me of my childhood days. We could not contain our excitement of participating in the Independence Day celebrations in our village school. When the tricolour was hoisted, we felt an electrifying energy pass through us. With our hearts full of patriotic pride, we saluted the national flag and sang the national anthem. Sweets were distributed and patriotic songs were sung, which kept playing in our minds for many days. I was fortunate in having an opportunity to re-live these experiences when I became a school teacher.

When we grow up, we may not remain as expressive of our joy as children are, but I am sure that the intensity of the patriotic feeling associated with the celebration of national festivals is not diminished at all. Independence Day reminds us that we are not merely individuals, but we are part of a great community of people. It happens to be the biggest and the greatest community of its kind. It is the community of the citizens of the world’s largest democracy.

What we celebrate on Independence Day is the fact that we are part of a great democracy. Each of us has many identities – apart from caste, creed, language and region, we are also identified with our families and professions – but there is one identity that is above all. That is our identity as citizens of India. Each one of us is an equal citizen; each one of us has an equal opportunity, equal rights and equal duties, in this land.

Festive offer

But it was not always so. India is the Mother of Democracy and since ancient times we had democratic institutions functioning at the grassroots. But long years of colonial rule wiped them out. On 15th August 1947, the nation woke up to a new dawn. We not only won freedom from foreign rule, but also the freedom to rewrite our destiny.

With our Independence began the era of foreign rulers withdrawing from many colonies and colonialism drew close to its end. What is special about our freedom struggle is not only the fact that its objective was achieved, but also how it was fought. Under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi and a galaxy of extraordinary visionary leaders, our national movement was animated by a unique set of ideals. Gandhiji and others re-kindled the soul of India and helped the nation rediscover its civilisational values. Following India’s shining example, ‘truth and non-violence’, the cornerstone of our resistance, has been successfully employed in many political struggles around the world.

On the eve of Independence Day, I join my fellow citizens in paying grateful tribute to the known and unknown freedom fighters whose sacrifices have made it possible for India to regain its rightful place in the comity of nations. Great women freedom fighters like Matangini Hazra and Kanaklata Baruah laid down their lives for Bharat-Mata. Maa Kasturba matched the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi every step of the way on the difficult path of Satyagraha. Many great women leaders like Sarojini Naidu, Ammu Swaminathan, Rama Devi, Aruna Asaf-Ali and Sucheta Kriplani had set inspiring ideals for all future generations of women, to serve the nation and the society with self-confidence. Today, women are contributing extensively in every field of development and service to the country and are enhancing the nation’s pride. Today our women have made their special place in many such fields in which their participation was unimaginable a few decades ago.

I am happy to note that the economic empowerment of women is being given special focus in our country. Economic empowerment strengthens the position of women in the family and society. I urge all fellow citizens to give priority to women empowerment. I would like our sisters and daughters to overcome challenges with courage and move ahead in life. Development of women was among the ideals of our freedom struggle.

Dear Citizens,

Independence Day is an occasion to reconnect with our history. It is also an occasion to assess our present and reflect about our way forward. Looking at the present, we see that India has not only regained its rightful place on the world stage, but it has also enhanced its standing in the international order. During my visits and interactions with the members of the Indian diaspora, I have observed a new confidence in the India story. India is playing a crucial role in promoting developmental and humanitarian goals around the world. It has also assumed leadership of international forums, especially the presidency of G-20.

As the G-20 represents two-thirds of the world population, this is a unique opportunity to help shape global discourse in the right direction. With the G-20 presidency, India can nudge decision-making in trade and finance towards equitable progress. Beyond trade and finance, matters of human development too are on the agenda. There are many global issues that concern all humanity and are not limited by geographical boundaries. I am confident that with India’s proven leadership in dealing with global issues, member-nations will be able to advance effective action on these fronts.

What is notable in India’s presidency of G-20 is the way this diplomatic activity has been taken to the grassroots. There has been a first-of-its-kind campaign to encourage people’s participation. It is delightful to see, for example, students enthusiastically participating in diverse contests organised in schools and colleges touching upon the themes of G-20. All the citizens are enthusiastic about events related to G-20.

Dear fellow citizens,

This enthusiasm, along with a sense of empowerment, is possible, because the nation has been taking great strides on all fronts. India’s economy has proven to be not only resilient during turbulent times but is also a beacon of hope for others. The world economy is passing through a delicate stage, as the pandemic has been followed by international events that have added to the air of uncertainty. Yet, the Government has been able to navigate the stormy waters very well. India has converted challenges into opportunities and has recorded high GDP growth. Our Annadata farmers have contributed significantly to our economic growth. The nation feels indebted to them.

Inflation at the global level remains a cause for worry. But in India the Government and the Reserve Bank have managed to contain it. The Government has succeeded in protecting the common people from high inflation while also providing a more extensive security cover to the poor. The world looks up to India for global economic growth.

The continued economic progress is driven by a two-pronged strategy. On the one hand, there is a sustained push to unleash the forces of enterprise by making it easier to do business and generate job opportunities. On the other, proactive and expanded welfare initiatives for the needy have been taken in various domains. Giving priority to the deprived remains the focus of our policies and actions that have lifted a large number of people out of poverty in the last decade. Similarly, there are specific programmes to improve the conditions of tribals and encourage them to join the journey of progress. I appeal to our tribal brothers and sisters to enrich their traditions while embracing modernity.

I am happy to note that along with economic growth, human-development-concerns have also been accorded high priority. Having been a teacher also, I have realised that education is the greatest tool of social empowerment. The National Education Policy of 2020 has started making a difference. From my interactions with students as well as educationists at various levels, I gather that the learning process has become more flexible. The visionary policy, which aims to merge ancient values with modern skills, will bring in unprecedented changes in the education sector over the years, leading to a great transformation of the nation. India’s economic progress is powered by the dreams of its people, particularly the young generation for whom limitless opportunities have opened up. From start-ups to sports, our youth have explored new horizons of excellence.

The aspirations of the new India have infinite dimensions. The Indian Space Research Organisation keeps scaling new heights and setting higher benchmarks of excellence. This year, ISRO launched Chandrayaan -3, and its lander named ‘Vikram’ and its rover named ‘Pragyan’ are slated to land on the moon in the next few days. It will be a proud moment for all of us and I look forward to it. But the mission to the moon is only a stepping stone for our future space programmes. We have to go far ahead.

For their work in space and also on earth, our scientists and technologists are bringing laurels to the country. To foster the spirit of research, innovation and entrepreneurship, the Government is setting up the Anusandhan National Research Foundation, with an amount of Rs. 50,000 crore for next five years. The foundation will seed, grow and promote research and development in our colleges, universities and research institutions.

For us, science or knowledge are not ends-in-themselves but are a means for the betterment of all the people. One area that merits urgent attention of scientists and policymakers all over the world is climate change. We have faced numerous extreme-weather events in recent years. Parts of India have faced extraordinary floods. At the same time, there are places facing drought. These events are also attributed to the phenomenon of global warming. Therefore, it is necessary to make efforts at the local, national and global levels for the environment. In this context, it is noteworthy that we have achieved unprecedented goals in the field of renewable energy. India is providing leadership to the International Solar Alliance. Our country is playing a leading role in fulfilling international commitments. We have given the mantra of LiFE i.e. Lifestyle for Environment to the global community.

Extreme weather events affect all. But their impact is far more severe on the poor and the marginalised. Cities and hilly terrains especially need to be made more resilient.

The larger point here is that the culture of greed takes the world away from nature. We now realise the dire need to return to our roots. I know that there are still many tribal communities who live very close to nature and in harmony with it. Their values and lifestyle offer invaluable lessons for climate action.

The secret of the survival of the tribal communities through ages can be summarised in one word. That single word is ‘Empathy’. They have empathy for all Mother Nature’s fellow children, flora and fauna alike. Sometimes, however, the world seems to be suffering from a deficit of empathy. But history shows that such periods are only aberrations, and kindness is our fundamental nature. It is my experience that women have empathy in greater measure and they show the way when humanity goes astray.

Our country has entered the ‘Amrit Kaal’ with new resolutions and we are moving forward towards making India an inclusive and developed nation by the year 2047. Let us all take a pledge to perform our fundamental duty to strive towards excellence in all spheres of individual and collective activity so that the nation constantly rises to higher levels of endeavour and achievement.

Our Constitution is our guiding document. Its Preamble contains the ideals of our freedom struggle. Let us move forward with the spirit of harmony and brotherhood to realise the dreams of our nation-builders.

On the eve of Independence Day, I once again extend my greetings to you, specially to our soldiers guarding the borders, jawans of the forces and the police providing internal security and to the members of our diaspora living in every part of the world. I convey my best wishes to you all.

Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!

The story of our freedom is a big one that cannot be told in a day. Actually, the British came to our country on the pretext of trade. He had slowly subdued everything. We were made slaves.

To end this slavery, many brave soldiers and great leaders of our country decided to teach a lesson to the British and for this they fought many battles against the British, had to go to jail, had to bear the injustice of the British but they did not give up. Agreed.

Many heroes of the country were martyred in the freedom struggle, but one day or another, which all Indians were eagerly waiting for. That day was 15th August 1947. On this day India broke the chains of slavery of the British and breathed in the atmosphere of freedom.

We will never forget the relentless struggle and sacrifice of those great freedom fighters and martyrs. I worship them even today.

Today the whole of India is celebrating this national festival with great enthusiasm. Today is a day of pride and enthusiasm for us. India is known as a strong country all over the world and it is our responsibility to always maintain this identity to protect our country.

Honorable Chief Guest, respected teachers and my dear countrymen,

Today we have gathered here to celebrate the 75th Independence Day of India. This is our important national festival. Wishing you all a very Happy Independence Day on this auspicious occasion.

India got independence from British rule on 15th August in 1947. This is the day when we got freedom from British rule after many years of hard struggle by great freedom fighters of India.

We can never forget the sacrifices of our freedom fighters who lost their lives for their country at a young age. We cannot ignore our great leaders who taught Indians a great lesson of non-violence.

After independence, our India is progressing in the fields like science, technology, education, sports. We can choose our own government. We have every right to enjoy the largest democracy in the world.

But even today many problems like terrorism, corruption, inequality, unemployment exist in our country.

As responsible citizens of the country, today we all take a pledge that to solve these problems, we all together will do our best and make India the best country in the world.

Jai Hind Jai Bharat.

The day of 15th August is very important in the history of our Indian country. On this day in 1947, India got freedom from the slavery of the British.

Many Indian heroes made invaluable contributions to liberating the country of India. Many freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhiji, Pandit Nehru, Subhash, Tilak, Pandey, Patel etc. dedicated their lives to liberate the country. Revolutionaries like Azad, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, etc. sacrificed their lives by spreading the fire of revolution in the country.

All the Indians together started the Satyagraha movement etc. against the British. Eventually the British left our country.

Today, 15th August has become the national festival of our country. On this day every year the Prime Minister of the country hoists the national flag at the Red Fort of Delhi because in 1947, on 15th August, Pandit Nehru unfurled the national flag on the ramparts of Delhi's Lale. The national anthem is sung in major institutions on this day. Tributes are paid to all the martyrs.

The present Prime Minister of our country gives a message to the nation. This day is celebrated with great pomp in all schools and colleges.

Today all of us Indians are enjoying living in the country of independent India. Hence; It is our duty to always protect our freedom. Try sincerely to take your country forward in every field.

Respected Chief Guest Sir, Respected Teachers, Parents and Colleagues.

I feel very happy to get this opportunity to express my thoughts to you on this auspicious occasion of Independence Day.

This is our 75th Independence Day celebration. Today we have gathered here to celebrate the 75th Independence Day of our country. Exactly 75 years ago today, we became independent. We cannot describe how we got freedom. Independence Day means a lot to every citizen of India.

The great men of our country ran many movements against the British, fought and after that our India became independent. We are free today because of the brave sons of our country.

India, which had lost its existence, regained its identity on the 15th day in 1947. Since then till today we have been celebrating 15th August every year as Independence Day.

On this day we celebrate independence and remember the brave soldiers of our country who gave us freedom.

Today is a very important day for all of us Indians. On this day i.e. 15th August 1947, our country was liberated from the shackles of slavery of the British.

We and our country have not got this freedom so easily. The freedom struggle was not easy. It was not easy to dream of making India independent, but the tireless struggle and sacrifice of some of the great people of our country made it possible.

We have not got this freedom for free. The price of this freedom has been paid by the brave sons of our country by giving their lives.

To win the war of independence, Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Lokmanya Tilak, Lala Lajpat Raiji etc. did many Satyagraha movements, fought without arms, many times they had to go to jail but they did not give up.

He had only one dream of an independent India, and he made it come true. After all, they did it on the strength of unity and self-confidence and it is because of their relentless struggle and sacrifice that we have come out of the shackles of the British into an open sky.

On this auspicious occasion, I would like to say to all of you that we have to protect our freedom at all costs, even if we have to sacrifice our lives for this.

Let us take a pledge to develop our India more and make it the most advanced and progressive country in the world. We all must protect our freedom.

On the occasion of Independence Day, we all should take a pledge to maintain the unity and integrity of India, only then our country will be able to move forward on the path of continuous progress.

With this we end our talk, thank you all and wish you a very Happy Independence Day.

Disinflation in the euro area: an update

Speech by philip r. lane, member of the executive board of the ecb, at the university college dublin economics society.

Dublin, 15 April 2024

My aim today is to review the recent evolution of inflation in the euro area, together with the implications for monetary policy. The ECB has held the main policy rate (the deposit facility rate) at 4.0 per cent since last September. At last week’s Governing Council meeting, we indicated that, if our updated assessment of the inflation outlook, the dynamics of underlying inflation and the strength of monetary policy transmission were to further increase our confidence that inflation is converging to our target in a sustained manner, it would be appropriate to reduce the current level of monetary policy restriction. [ 1 ]

Chart 1 shows the evolution of headline and core inflation since 2019 [ 2 ] . Let me focus on the disinflation patterns since August 2023. Inflation stood at 5.2 per cent last August and has subsequently declined to 2.4 percent in March. Energy inflation has moved from -3.3 per cent last August to -1.8 per cent in March; food inflation has declined from 9.7 per cent to 2.7 per cent; and core inflation has fallen from 5.3 per cent to 2.9 per cent. Looking at the individual subcomponents of core inflation, there has been a reduction in goods inflation from 4.7 per cent to 1.1 per cent, and in services inflation from 5.5 per cent to 4.0 per cent.

Headline inflation and core inflation

Annual percentage changes

Sources: Eurostat. Notes: HICP refers to headline inflation and HICPX to HICP excluding food and energy. The latest observations for HICP and HICPX are for March 2024 (flash).

In terms of the array of underlying inflation measures tracked by the ECB, Chart 2 shows the evolution of the refined versions of these measures, which adjust for the dynamic impact of energy shocks and supply bottlenecks. [ 3 ] The improvements in these measures since August 2023 suggest that the observed disinflation has a substantial persistent component. At the same time, there has been much less progress in relation to domestic inflation compared to broader inflation measures, reflecting the higher sensitivity of domestic inflation to local cost pressures. As captured in Chart 3, the overall disinflation rate largely reflects the unwinding of the supply shocks that were the primary source of the inflation surge in 2021-2022.

Adjusted measures of underlying inflation

speech in english for independence day 2023

Sources: Eurostat and ECB staff calculations. Notes: HICP refers to headline inflation, HICPX to HICP excluding food and energy, HICPXX to HICP excluding food, energy, travel-related items and clothing, and PCCI to Persistent and Common Component of Inflation. The “adjusted” measures abstract from energy and global supply bottleneck shocks using a large SVAR, as explained in Bańbura, M., Bobeica, E. and Martínez Hernández, C. (2023), “ What drives core inflation? The role of supply shocks ”, Working Paper Series , No 2875, ECB. The latest observations are for March 2024 (flash) for HICPX, HICP excluding energy and HICP excluding unprocessed food and energy, and February 2024 for the rest.

Sources of annual price inflation in the euro area

Annual percentage changes and percentage point contributions

speech in english for independence day 2023

Source: ECB calculations based on Arce, A., Ciccarelli, M., Kornprobst, A. and Montes-Galdón, C. (2024), “ What caused the euro area post-pandemic inflation? ”, Occasional Paper Series , No 343, ECB. Notes: The figure shows a decomposition of the sources of annual HICP inflation between the first quarter of 2020 and the fourth quarter of 2023 based on the solution of the full model and the implied impulse response functions. The continuous line shows actual inflation, and the total net heights of the bars are the model’s forecast of inflation in each period, given initial conditions up to the fourth quarter of 2019. The contributions of the residuals are computed as the difference between actual and simulated data. The dark blue portion of each bar shows the contribution of pre-2020 data. The coloured segments of each bar show the general equilibrium, fully dynamic contribution of each exogenous variable to inflation in that period, as implied by the estimated model. Shocks to the rate of change of the relative price of energy and food are constructed as deviations in the values of those variables from zero. Shocks to the shortages variable are constructed as deviations in the values from the sample mean. Shocks to the vacancy-to-unemployment ratio (labour market variable) are constructed as the actual value minus the value in the fourth quarter of 2019.

The role of monetary policy in the disinflation process has been to ensure that the large and persistent but temporary inflation shocks did not mutate into an increase in the medium-term inflation trend through the de-anchoring of inflation expectations. Since 2022, the central tendency distribution of longer-term inflation expectations has remained largely centred at the two percent target, reflecting the general credibility of the ECB’s commitment to delivering its inflation target. [ 4 ] Since last summer, a range of measures show that near-term inflation expectations have also come down and that the risk of inflation staying above target in the long term has diminished. Charts 4 to 8 shows the evolution of various indicators of inflation expectations and inflation risk: Chart 4 shows the right tail in the distribution of long-term inflation expectations in the Survey of Professional Forecasters has markedly diminished compared to the peak inflation phase in late 2022; Chart 5 shows that the inflation risk premium embedded in five-year-on-five-year inflation swaps has declined by about 40 basis points since last summer; Chart 6 shows that the option-implied probability of above 2.5 per cent inflation in the five-year-on-five-year interval has dropped, while the option-implied probability of below 1.5 per cent inflation has picked up; Chart 7 shows that, according to the Consumer Expectations Survey, households have recognised the improvement in inflation outcomes and marked down their near-term inflation expectations; finally, Chart 8 shows that, according to the results from the survey on the access to finance of enterprises (SAFE), firms have lowered their near-term inflation expectations, while the proportion of firms that fear high inflation in the medium term has decreased. [ 5 ]

Notes: Premia-adjusted forward ILS rates are average estimates from two affine term structure models as in Joslin, Singleton and Zhu (2011) applied to ILS rates non-adjusted for the indexation lag; see Burban et al. (2022), Economic Bulletin , Issue 8, ECB, Box 4. The latest observations are for 11 April 2024.

Notes: Five-day moving average risk-neutral probabilities of inflation implied by five-year and ten-year zero-coupon inflation options. The latest observations are for 11 April 2024.

Firms’ expectations about euro area inflation at different horizons

Percentages per annum

Notes: Survey-weighted median, mode and interquartile ranges of firms’ expectations about euro area inflation in one year, three years and five years respectively. Quantiles are computed by linear interpolation of the mid-distribution function. All enterprises. The latest observations are for March 2024.

The lowering of perceived inflation risk is plausibly connected to the faster-than-expected decline in inflation in recent months, which has provided reassurance that inflation would not remain too far away from target for too long. This is captured in Chart 9, which shows the evolution of the projected 2024 inflation rate over the September, December and March projection rounds. Chart 10 also shows the downward revisions to the 2024 growth rate over these projection rounds.

Real GDP growth in 2024

speech in english for independence day 2023

Despite the overall disinflation trend, services inflation remains high at 4.0 per cent. The decline in services inflation since last summer has largely been in non-labour-intensive services sectors, reflecting the indirect impact of lower energy prices, the easing of supply bottlenecks and the fading out of pandemic reopening effects on these sectors. As shown in Chart 11, there is a relatively tight medium-term relation between wage inflation and the inflation rate for labour-intensive services sectors (which make up a large part of the domestic inflation component). Over time, deceleration in wage growth is necessary in order for services inflation to converge to a rate that is consistent with meeting the two per cent target for overall inflation.

Services inflation developments

speech in english for independence day 2023

Sources: Eurostat and ECB calculations. Latest observations are for the fourth quarter of 2023 for compensation per employee, March 2024 (flash) for services inflation and February 2024 for the rest.

Wage pressures are gradually moderating but remain elevated compared to a steady-state benchmark. As shown in Chart 12, annual growth in compensation per employee decelerated in the fourth quarter of last year to 4.6 per cent, from 5.1 per cent in the third quarter. Growth in compensation per hour also slowed, falling in annual terms to 4.4 per cent in the fourth quarter from 5.0 per cent in the third quarter. The wages and salaries component of the labour cost indicator decreased to 3.3 per cent in the fourth quarter from 5.1 per cent in the third quarter. Annual unit labour cost growth fell to 5.8 per cent, from 6.5 per cent, but remained high, in part reflecting weak productivity growth. Negotiated wage growth including one-off payments also declined further, falling to 3.2 per cent in January from 4.8 per cent in December, although this figure does not yet include the data for France and Italy.

As shown in Chart 13, forward-looking wage trackers also continue to provide signs of easing. As shown in Charts 14 and 15, the feedback from firms participating in the Corporate Telephone Survey (CTS) and the SAFE point to lower wage growth this year. The March projections foresee subsequent phases of further wage deceleration in 2025 and 2026, with the growth rate of compensation per employee declining from 5.3 per cent in 2023 to 4.5 per cent in 2024, 3.6 per cent in 2025 and 3.0 per cent in 2026.

In addition to wage growth deceleration, the convergence of inflation to the target also requires compression in profits. As reflected in Chart 16, annual growth in unit profits decelerated further in the fourth quarter, falling to 2.8 per cent from 4.7 per cent in the third quarter. This significant decline was the main driver of the reduction in the annual growth rate of the GDP deflator, which fell by 0.6 percentage points to 5.3 per cent. As embedded in the March projections exercise, further compression in profits is required to support the convergence of inflation to the target, and a sufficiently restrictive monetary policy stance is necessary to provide the dampened demand conditions to limit the pass-through of rising costs to consumer prices.

Finally, it should be recognised that the current phase of disinflation is necessarily bumpy. In particular, the swings in energy prices during 2023 will generate oscillations in base effects in the monthly inflation readings, while the staggered reversal of various temporary fiscal supports will also operate on the price level in an uneven manner. Chart 25 plots a range of indicators of near-term inflation dynamics and the projected quarterly evolution of headline and core inflation according to the March projections. Headline inflation is expected to fluctuate around current levels in the near term on account of base effects in the energy component and the reversal of the upward effect of the early timing of Easter on services inflation in March. While services inflation should decline somewhat in the near term, it is expected to remain relatively elevated for most of this year.

Notes: The cut-off date is 3 April 2024 for the regression forest and 11 April 2024 for fixings. Consensus Economics data were collected on 8 April 2024. The quantile regression forest estimates are from Lenza, M., Moutachaker, I. and Paredes, J. (2023), “ Density forecasts of inflation: a quantile regression forest approach ”, Working Paper Series , No 2830, ECB. The HICP fixings are observed market prices. The HICPX fixings are estimated based on the model in Grønlund, A.M., Jørgensen, K. and Schupp, F. (2024), “ Measuring market-based core inflation expectations ”, Working Paper Series, No 2908, ECB. The latest actual observation is for March 2024 (flash).

Even if the near-term inflation outlook is somewhat bumpy, the projected convergence of inflation to the target in 2025 will be underpinned by: the lowering of labour cost pressures; some additional compression of unit profits; the dissipation of the adverse effects of past energy shocks, supply bottlenecks and the pandemic re-opening; and the further unfolding of the disinflationary impact of the restrictive monetary policy stance. This disinflationary dynamic is consistent with both inflation stabilising at our target in 2025 and a substantial economic recovery, with rising real incomes and improvements in the terms of trade, together with the prospect of dis-inflation unlocking future interest rate reductions, boosting domestic consumption and investment, while the normalisation of foreign demand will facilitate growth in exports.

This review of the disinflation path in recent months and the analysis of the drivers of inflation over the projection horizon indicate that, based on the three elements of our reaction function we can conclude that the key ECB interest rates are at levels that are making a substantial contribution to the ongoing disinflation process. Our future decisions will ensure that our policy rates will stay sufficiently restrictive for as long as necessary. If our updated assessment of the inflation outlook, the dynamics of underlying inflation and the strength of monetary policy transmission were to further increase our confidence that inflation is converging to our target in a sustained manner, it would be appropriate to reduce the current level of monetary policy restriction. In informing this assessment, the June Governing Council meeting will benefit from updated staff projections and the accumulation of data about the dynamics of wages and profits in the opening months of this year. In any event, we will continue to follow a data-dependent and meeting-by-meeting approach to determining the appropriate level and duration of restriction, and we are not pre-committing to a particular rate path.

On navigating the transition from the “holding” phase to the “dialling back” phase of the tightening cycle of monetary policy, see Lagarde, C. (2024), “ Building confidence in the path ahead ”, speech at The ECB and its Watchers XXIV Conference, organised by the Institute for Monetary and Financial Stability, Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main, 20 March.

I maintain a narrow focus in this speech on the patterns since August 2023. I recently provided a comprehensive overview of the disinflation process in Lane, P.R. (2024), “ Disinflation in the euro area ”, speech at the Hutchins Center on Fiscal & Monetary Policy at the Brookings Institution, Washington, D.C., 8 February.

See M. Banbura, E. Bobeica, K. Bodnar, B. Fagandini, P. Healy and J. Paredes, Underlying inflation measures; an analytical guide for the euro area, Economic Bulletin Issue 5, 2023. While domestic inflation is not to be interpreted as a measure of the underlying rate of aggregate inflation, it is still useful to include it since domestic inflation should be more sensitive to the domestic monetary stance and it tends to be more persistent than the imported component of inflation.

In fact, the inflation surge initially served to “re-anchor from below” inflation expectations at the target: until 2022, a significant proportion of professional forecasters (and market participants) believed that the ECB would not be able to bring inflation up to the target, in view of the effective lower bound constraint.

In terms of their own pricing intentions, firms report that price increases will be lower in 2024 compared to 2023.
