The overall theme for the PhD Seminar 2023 is Interdisciplinarity in Law and for Sustainable Value Creation.

The seminar will cover important theoretical and methodological issues for PhD candidates and include discussions on recent developments and topical issues related to sustainable value creation. On the first day, we will address the importance of interdisciplinary research in sustainability, and the role of interdisciplinarity in legal research. On the second day, we will focus on the concept of sustainable value creation, both from European and global perspectives. The third day of the seminar will be devoted to addressing the meaning and relevance of a regulatory ecology approach to conducting research in sustainability law. A regulatory ecology approach analyses the interactions between law and social norms, market pressures, and human-made and ecological architectures as infrastructures, thus allowing to identify options of regulatory interventions. The fourth day will focus on due diligence and reporting regulation, inspired by recent trends in global governance and EU law. We will end the seminar with a day dedicated to reflections on the future of interdisciplinarity and sustainable legal research.

We look forward to a wonderful combination of lectures by senior scholars and presentations by PhD candidates. We welcome PhD candidates from the Nordics and Europe as well as from other countries. With high quality academic lectures, the seminar is relevant also for senior scholars and practitioners. The seminar will be in hybrid form, but we encourage presenting PhD candidates to join physically if possible. Please make sure to register before 2 October (for physical participation) or 9 October (online participation). See link for registration below.

The seminar gives a unique opportunity to PhD candidates to present their topics amongst a dedicated group of peers and senior scholars. For those interested, there is also an option of signing up for essay writing, with follow-up after the seminar. We recommend early registration for those interested in presenting their projects, as we usually receive more requests than we can accommodate.

Pre-conference PhD Workshop European Research Network On Philanthropy 11th International Conference  When: June 28, 2023  Where: University of Zagreb, Croatia

ERNOP is organizing a pre-conference, full-day, workshop for PhD candidates. Bernard Enjolras (Institute for Social Research, Oslo), Arthur Gautier (ESSEC Business School, Paris), and Michaela Neumayr (WU Vienna) will mentor a selection of PhD candidates in different stages of their dissertation research.

In this workshop, PhD candidates will get the chance to present their research project and receive feedback. A few weeks before the event, participants will be asked to hand in a working paper (short or full paper) from their research project. To apply, we invite candidates to provide an abstract (500 words) of their project and a short summary (300 words) of the main topic they want to discuss at the workshop. We will share all summaries and working papers in advance of the workshop.

Every PhD student will get 30 minutes (10 minutes presentation + 20 minutes discussion) and focus on one or two aspects they want feedback on from their peers and faculty members. At the end of the workshop, a Q&A session will be proposed, and faculty members will offer guidance on key issues faced by PhD students (e.g., writing their thesis, dealing with reviewers’ feedback, preparing their job search, etc.).

Guidelines for application:

Please submit your application for participation here by February 12, 2023. You will be notified of acceptance by March 12, 2023. The application (one file) should contain:

  • A short (250 words) motivation letter by the applicant, explaining what the candidate expects to learn from the workshop.
  • An abstract (500 words) of their research project.
  • A short summary (300 words) of the main topic they want to discuss at the workshop.

Participation is free of charge, but admission is limited, and registration is required.

PhD Seminar

The ECLAN PhD seminar provides a friendly environment in which research students can gain experience in presenting their research, learn from each other’s research and develop contacts with other researchers in their field.

It aims to gather together PhD candidates working in the field of EU criminal law and holding a degree in law, political science, or international studies.

Candidates present a topic of their choice (e.g., their envisaged PhD topic, a chapter of their PhD, a recent paper, etc.) before a panel of outstanding professors of EU criminal law and members of ECLAN. They then receive comments, feedback and suggestions on their research. Finally, the floor is open for debate.

The Final Program is OUT! Check it out in attachment to this page

Since 2010, ECLAN has organised PhD seminars in different universities across the EU. So far, PhD seminars have taken place at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (2010), the University of Luxembourg (2011), the University of Bayonne (2013), the Queen Mary University (2014), the University of Copenhaguen (2015), the University of Vienna (2016), the University of Basel (2017), at the University of Luxembourg (2019), and lastly at the University of Vilnius (2022). The 11 th edition of the ECLAN PhD seminar will take place in Liverpool, from 30 November to 1 December, 2023. The Seminar will be organised by the ECLAN and the School of Law and Social Justice of the University of Liverpool.

This year’s Seminar is specifically dedicated to the The Future of European Criminal Law . There is no doubt that the EU criminal law is an emerging field, both influencing and being influenced by national criminal law systems. Although the competence of the EU institutions to harmonise national criminal law is limited, its scope is being expanded. Over the last decade, various legal instruments concerning both substantive and procedural criminal law have been adopted at the EU level. Thus, the 11 th ECLAN PhD Seminar will represent an opportunity to reflect on the development of EU criminal law over the last decade and to discuss the challenges ahead.

The Call for papers can be found below , in attachment and on the website of University of Liverpool: https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/law/research/eclan/

Topics of relevance for this PhD Seminar include:

- Key developments in European criminal law including harmonisation of substantive criminal law, mutual recognition, and the operation of EU criminal justice bodies and agencies;

- European criminal law from a theoretical, comparative or crossdisciplinary perspective , including the intersection of criminal law with other areas of law such as immigration law, internal market law, constitutional law and data protection law;

- European criminal law facing current challenges , including safeguarding the rule of law, upholding EU values in EU external action in criminal matters and the transformation of criminal law in the digital age and in the age of AI.

The deadline for submitting application is 15 September, 2023.

Applications must be sent to: [email protected]

Some pictures and the programmes of the past editions are also available below.

Irene Wieczorek , PhD researcher, describes her experience of the PhD Seminar :

Participating to the ECLAN PhD seminars has meant to me much more than simply presenting my research and getting useful feedbacks. I felt I was progressively becoming part of a scientific community, of young and senior researchers sharing the same interest and passion for European Criminal Law. I created personal bonds and true friendships, which have stayed with me through out all my PhD, and have enriched me personally and intellectually. The debates did not stop at the presentations during the day, but continued throughout dinners and sightseeing moments. Every time it felt like a 2 days of non-stop intellectual interactions, which all the time resulted in true advancement for my research. I would recommend to anyone working in this field to join the ECLAN PhD seminar, as it is really a unique opportunity.

EUPRERA PhD Seminar

research & development european phd seminar 2023

Sinaia, the mountain town where the 2024 PhD seminar will take place, is situated in the Prahova Valley (seen here), in the Romanian Carpathian mountains.

The aim of the EUPRERA PhD seminar, taking place every year soon before the EUPRERA annual congress, is to provide an international setting where doctoral students within public relations and strategic communication can present their ongoing work, get feedback from experts and peers and establish a valuable network for the future.

Was really helpful and I’ve also got some clear idea for my future works. A chance to get input from someone with different perspectives and ideas on how to continue my work. Participating in the EUPRERA PhD seminar was a great opportunity for me to discuss my own dissertation project with PhD students and senior scholars in a very constructive atmosphere. Expect to meet PhD students from across Europe and beyond, train your presentation and feedback skills in an intercultural setting, and think out-of-the-box. Helpful feedback from experts and peers, very much time for every paper. You’ll also receive first-hand advice on publication strategies and how to pursue an academic career.

Next PhD Seminar

The 17th EUPRERA PhD seminar will be held in Sinaia on September 8-11, 2024 (arrival on September 8), before the EUPRERA annual congress in Bucharest, Romania.

research & development european phd seminar 2023

The seminar is intended for early/mid-stage PhD students in public relations, organizational communication, and/or strategic communication. It provides an international setting for the next generation of scholars. During three days, participants will get the chance to network and discuss their work in depth and get feedback from experts and peers. Active participation is expected meaning that everyone prepares comments on papers that are distributed in advance. In addition, two designated respondents will be appointed per paper and provide written feedback ahead of the seminar dates. The seminar will also include presentations and discussions around topics such as the process of writing a PhD, developing an academic career, and the relationship between PhD student and advisor.

There will be a limited number of 10 participants . The submissions will go through a selection process. Deadline for applications: June 12 .

Application requirements and process

  • A one-page abstract presenting the dissertation (must explicitly address public relations, organizational communication, and/or strategic communication) and proof of enrolment in a PhD programme to be sent to Øyvind Ihlen ( [email protected] ) by June 12.

The abstracts will go through a review process focusing on quality and potential before a decision regarding acceptance is made. If accepted, participants are expected to confirm their attendance and submit the following:

  • 10-page paper based on the PhD project. The paper should follow the standard structure of introduction of the topic of interest, research question, literature review of the theory that is or will be applied, description and discussion of the methodological approach, analysis/discussion, and (tentative) conclusion. If the dissertation is article-based, it is possible to pull out one of the articles and present this alongside an introduction note detailing the context of the piece. You should also pose three questions concerning the type of feedback you are looking for.
  • One page of comments for each of the two papers (will be allocated after August), addressing the quality of the research questions, theory, method and/or analysis, to be distributed to the participant. Deadline: to be defined, it will be a few days before the seminar.

Acceptance criteria

The seminar is suited for early/mid-stage PhD students in public relations, organizational communication, and/or strategic communication.

  • Academic and Research Background
  • Proof of enrolment in a PhD program or recommendation from a PhD supervisor
  • Submission of a research paper relevant to strategic communication/public relations
  • Research Paper Evaluation
  • Originality and Contribution: New ideas, methods, relevance, and addressing a gap in research.
  • Theoretical Framework: Depth of understanding, integration of literature, and critical analysis.
  • Methodology: Suitability, clarity, and ethical considerations.
  • Data Analysis and Interpretation: Rigor, coherence, and insightfulness.
  • Structure and Organization: Clarity, logical flow, and consistency.
  • Impact and Implications: Practical relevance, suggestions for future research, and generalizability.
  • Writing Quality: Grammar, syntax, formatting, and clarity of expression.
  • Commitment to Participation
  • Willingness to participate in all seminar activities.
  • Diversity and Inclusion
  • Diverse academic backgrounds and geographical representation.
  • Previous attendance
  • There are 10 seats available. A maximum of 1 of these might be granted to a student who has participated previously. In case of fewer than 10 applicants, this number can increase.

The organisers of the PhD-seminar will convene after the submission deadline to make a decision based on the above criteria.

Programme and presentations

A detailed program will be distributed in early September.

An important role of the PhD seminar is the opportunity to network with peers. It is important to allocate the working hours as well as the time for socializing with the seminar group. Therefore, you should not plan private tourist activities during the seminar days.

It is highly recommended that PhD students attend the congress as well as the seminar. You can take advantage of the special package fee including both events (registration instructions will be sent after the abstract approval). During the congress, a panel session will be set aside for the students to present .

Registration

To register for the PhD seminar, first you need to submit your application and then, if approved, you will get the seminar registration code.

Registration fees:

Seminar only – 420 EUR The fee includes the seminar materials, accommodation and full board from Sunday evening to Wednesday afternoon, transfer from Bucharest to Sinaia and back. Seminar and Congress – 530 EUR The fee includes the seminar materials, accommodation, and full board from Sunday evening to Wednesday afternoon, transfer from Bucharest to Sinaia and back, and congress registration fee.
