"Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1" made me draw parallels to another Tamil blockbuster released earlier this year for an odd reason. While most of our "commercial/ mass" cinema relies heavily on how the titular hero is portrayed, we have now had two big-scale movies in which the titular hero is physically absent in the first half. Yes, I am indeed talking about Lokesh Kanagaraj’s "Vikram", which followed the search for the protagonist approach. Akin to Fahad Fazil’s Amar character in the film above, here, too, the story unravels from the point of view of another star, an exemplary Karthi’s Vallavarayan Vanthiyathevan.

Like "Vikram", we keep hearing the mention of the hero quite a few times, yet, we don’t get to see Jayam Ravi’s “Ponniyin Selvan” in full glory for the entirety of the first half. And when we do finally see him, it’s a build-up shot, all right, but it is still relatively low-key for a hero we know will become one of the most celebrated real-life kings in Tamil history. This, not to mention, is the most heroic entry scene among the three stars in the film, and yet it feels too underplayed compared to all the chutzpah that we are recently used to in these extravagant films of late.  This is not a criticism but a welcome breath of fresh air.

Maniratnam, who is known for contemporising epic mythology (see "Thalapathy" and "Raavanan") in "PS: 1", retells the story of a classic period novel by utilising contemporary filmmaking techniques instead. He and writers Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan have woven a screenplay that concentrates solely on the critical moving aspects of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s sprawling five-volume novel. When shot with Ravi Varman’s aesthetic camera work that firmly roots the film, this screenplay provides a new immersive experience that we don’t usually associate with these films. Period dramas are always about the wide shots and the grander, while here, even the wonderfully staged set-pieces feel intimate as there is not even one static frame to cover the full scale of the battlefields. It is as if you jump right into the thick of the action like you are in the middle of the fight yourself. Even the elaborate sets erected by Thotta Tharani are detailed so that they appear grounded, despite being huge in scale.

This contemporary style of making is even evident in the choice of soundtracks composed by A.R. Rahman. The songs, which feel too fresh and too vibrant for a film of this genre, do wonders in moving the story forward. A movie with so many characters needs much exposition and prolonged set-up, but the songs are used as intelligent storytelling devices that help in advancing the plot further. The way "Devaralan Aatam" is shot and choreographed deserves special mention, but the song placement of "Ratchasa Maamaney" to set up a fun chase sequence worked exceptionally well. While on the music, the background music in several instances, like when Trisha’s Kudhavai and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Nandhini meet or when Vikram’s Aditha Karikalan reflects on his tragic past, is some of the best screen elevations that add to the overall experience.

The story is about succession and power struggle, so even if you are unfamiliar with the books, these are relevant and very often shown on-screen. For example, the Nandhini character feels like the inspiration for Andrea’s excellent Chandra in "Vada Chennai", while Prakash Raj as the ailing father and his three children for succession plot is strangely the same as in Maniratnam’s own "Chekka Chevandha Vaanam". And we can also see that the director has carried over some of the styles he handled for that film to manage a multi-star cast here. The style often feels like a "highlights reel" where we keep jumping from one revelation to another story-defining moment. Thankfully, despite the constant plot progression, the film never gets too overstuffed and remains engaging throughout without a dull moment.

The cast’s performances are brilliant as even if they have just one or two high moments in the film, everyone at least manages to stay in memory while you leave the theatre. Karthi can go about flirting with beautiful women and do nothing more, and I can watch it all day. He oozes a joyfulness that we usually don’t see in our macho lead men and vibrates as the heart piece of the entire film. His few interactions with Jayaram’s Azhwarkadiyan Nambi add much-needed humour to the story of blood and vengeance.

Vikram plays a role that he is very well used to – that of a mentally hurt yet physically solid and imposing man and easily conveys the pain and the wrath of the eldest prince. Ravi is a revelation of sorts, as he carries the royalty of Arunmozhi Varman with grace and calmness. But, the women manage to steal the show in the brief moments they tend to get – both Aishwarya Rai and Trisha are convincing as the cold-war-like feuding Nandhini and Kundhavai, and they also appear like a million dollars when on screen. All the other cast members leave a mark here or there, as such is the source material where every character feels necessary for the plot to function.

The best part of the film is the ending. Compressing a dense multiple-volume novel into a two-part movie throws an interesting question about where to split the films. This has to function in such a way that the movie itself serves as a standalone story but still manages to develop intrigue for the part that is coming later. The writers not only work to find a midpoint that works both ways but also add a twist that is sure to click well with the audience. If this is our "Infinity War", please bring us our "Endgame" soon.

Mani Ratnams direction is good as far as technique is concerned, but he has not been able to penetrate into peoples hearts with his narration. In that sense, his narration fails to engage the viewers. On the whole, Ponniyin Selvan €“ I is a boring fare which will not find too many takers among the Hindi film-going audiences. Its Hindi dubbed version will, therefore, flop at the ticket windows.

The difference between Mani Ratnams brand of commercial films and the rest becomes evident with Ponniyin Selvan. He doesnt make demi-gods out of his heroes, they are just kings. Also, the filmmaker respects the audience. and thats why PS 1 is rewarding. He also understands that Ponniyin Selvan is itself a mainstream page-turner that panders to the audience. Hence, he neither dumbs it down nor intellectualizes it. Instead, he retains the flavour of the widely-enjoyed book in this thoroughly enjoyable film.

Ratings: 2.5/5  Review By: Shubham Site: Koimoi

Ponniyin Selvan is an iconic book and one that has enthralled readers in the South for years, the adaptation does manage to explain why showing the basics, but the big show lacks the thunder it must have. Part 2 has a lot to answer and if the approach stays like the first, hopes are dim.

Ratings: 3.5/5  Review By: Suganth Site:Times Of India

Mani Ratnam finally brings the dream alive with this spectacular adaptation that superbly captures the intrigue, thrills and page-turning quality of the books. In this first of a two-part franchise, the director and his writers €” Jeyamohan and Ilango Kumaravel €” rise up to the challenge. The manner in which they have condensed the novel is admirable, with the changes €” like Kundhavai storming into a secret discussion, the introduction of Ponniyin Selvan’s mysterious saviour – adding to the momentum of the narrative. Jeyamohan’s dialogues are especially a highlight as he uses language that is both classical and colloquial without making it seem odd.

Probably the most exciting element about Ponniyin Selvan – Part 1 is the story itself. Upon watching the film, one might finally get the answer to the question why is Ponniyin Selvan one of the best selling novels in the country. Right from the word Go, there is a natural tension that is present in each scene, keeping us on the edge of our seats.

Ratings: 3.75/5  Review By: Siddarth Site:OnlyKollywood

On the whole, Ponniyin Selvan 1 is a film that delivers just what we expected €“ a drama that stays true to its source material. Mani Ratnam decides to do it in his way and that drives down the potential excitement that could have been explored, but nevertheless, this is stuff worth watching on the big screen at least once.

Ratings: 3/5  Review By: MovieCrow Site:Movie Crow

Your experience could largely vary depending on your familiarity with Kalki’s novel. PS 1 is largely condensed, and plot driven. So, the emotions of characters and the significance of crucial events dont register as impactfully as one would have liked. But it also has some other things going for it. It delivers on the joys of watching a big scale movie with a studded star cast. Most importantly, it remains engaging despite the lack of high moments and has us anticipating the second part!

The long wait is finally over! Director Mani Ratnam’s ambitious film, Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1, hit the screens today, September 30, amid much fanfare. The film, a historical fiction, is adapted from Kalki Krishnamurthy’s epic Tamil literary novel that encapsulates the power struggle that rattled the Chola Dynasty. Has the film lived up to the expectations? Will it satisfy the book lovers?

A comet appears in the sky and it is the bringer of bad news. Sundara Chozhar (Prakash Raj) is ailing and has announced his eldest son, Aditha Karikalan (Chiyaan Vikram) as the crown prince. However, the people of the Chola kingdom and Sundara Chozhar’s second child, Kundavai (Trisha) thinks that her younger brother, Arunmozhi Varman (Jayam Ravi) will make a great king.

Aditha Karikalan sends his friend and trusted aide Vallavarayan Vanthiyathevan (Karthi) to Kadambur based on the tip-off he received. He wants Vanthiyathevan to find out the plan that’s brewing and report it to Sundara Chozhar and Kundavai. A power struggle ensues as Sundara Chozhar’s brother’s son, Madhuranthagar (Rahman), also eyes the throne. Meanwhile, there’s Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), wife of Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar (Sarathkumar), who is married into the Chola kingdom to avenge the death of her husband, Veera Pandiyan (opposite faction). Who will succeed in their mission forms the first part of Ponniyin Selvan.

The five-part book of Ponniyin Selvan, written by Kalki Krishnamurthy is verbose and with utmost detailing. The first part of Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan documents the important moments that take place in the first three parts of the book. Technically, Ponniyin Selvan is top-notch. Be it Ravi Varman’s brilliant cinematography or AR Rahman’s excellent score, the film sucks us into the world that Mani Ratnam has created with so much detailing.

But when it comes to the story, Ponniyin Selvan might be an underwhelming affair for those who have read the books. Since, Mani Ratnam has crammed three parts together in one film (with a run time of 2 hours and 45 minutes), most of the characters except Karthi’s Vanthiyathevan do not get much screen time. The story jumps from Thanjavur to Pazhayarai to Sri Lanka and so do the characters. But, for those who haven’t read the books, the film warrants utmost attention as there are multiple characters at play and multiple timelines crossing over.

Mani Ratnam’s adaptation of the epic is high on VFX and does not follow the usual template of a period film. He takes his own sweet time to build the world of Ponniyin Selvan and throws in crucial details through his characters matter-of-factly. There are several high moments sprinkled throughout the film. Be it Vanthiyathevan’s meet-up with Nandini or the epic Nandini-Kundavai face-off, Aditya Karikalan’s monologue or Arunmozhi Varman-Vanthiyathevan’s climax fight - you get grandeur-laden visuals, backed by strong storytelling. The dialogues, especially Vanthiyathevan and spy Azhwarkadiyan Nambi (Jayaram) work well as they manage to bring relief with their clever wit.

Apart from Karthi and Jayaram, it is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s show all the way. Through Nandini, she proves why she is best suited for the role as she charms us right from the first frame. Similarly, Trisha’s Kundavai has a strong presence throughout the film. However, in a few moments, her performance doesn’t add up to the hype. Chiyaan Vikram as Aditya Karikalan is a volatile prince, who lets his emotions take over and the actor has done a perfect job in capturing the vulnerabilities. Jayam Ravi, who plays Arunmozhi Varman, in the film, gets introduced in the second half and manages to hold our attention.

Aishwarya Lekshmi’s Poonguzhali character is a bit of a let-down as not much importance is given to her. So is Sobhita Dhulipala’s Vanathi. Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Vikram Prabhu, Kishore, Lal, Arjun Chidambaram and Ashwin Kakumanu deliver their best in the little screen time they received.

After the performances, AR Rahman’s brilliant background score stands out and elevates every single moment. The way Ravi Varman lit up the screen inside the palaces and in the forests of Sri Lanka proves why he is the best. Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 ends on a high as it reveals the identity of an important character. That sets the tone for the second part, which will release in 2023.

Ponniyin Selvan 1 (PS1) Movie Review

Mani ratnam comes up with a period drama worth watching on the big screen below goes our ponniyin selvan 1 (ps1) movie review..

ps 1 movie review behindwoods

Performances

Story & narration, technical aspects & music.

Mani Ratnam’s long time dream of bringing Ponniyin Selvan to the big screens have come true finally, and the film has indeed delivered on all fronts to present a period epic on screen.

Ponniyin Selvan’s big tough job is the concise the weight of the five novels into just two films, and the fact that Mani Ratnam had to stuff in the story of more than two novels into one film is a mammoth task in itself. But without creating any confusion or doubt, the writer and his team skilfully put together important incidents from the book and make it an engrossing watch altogether. Driven majorly by dialogues, battles fought inside the head and characters who have different aims coming together as one, Ponniyin Selvan 1 has a very realistic and rooted approach in its storytelling as opposed to a cinematic set of highs that one would want from such period films. In order to stay connected to the novel at all times, Mani Ratnam ensures that his film catapults all the main points from the novel and brings together an engaging narrative. However, this also moves away from the potential wow moments that the film could have created in a period zone, as we get a rather dramatic train of events than highs for the characters onscreen.

Ponniyin Selvan benefits big from its ensemble star cast who have all done justice to the characters given to them – Karthi is undoubtedly the show stealer as Vanthiyathevan, stitching together all the characters of the film and making it as entertaining as possible. Vikram showcases pain superbly, though his scenes are overloaded with dialogues and screams all through. Jayam Ravi is a bit of a surprise as he has a calm and likeable presence in the film, playing the young prince. However, the film finds its biggest treasures in its heroines – Aishwarya Rai is excellent playing Nandini, and emotes her part so well while Trisha has an angelic part to play and does not even have one misstep in her way.

Ponniyin Selvan 1 has a very good support star led by a superb Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Sarathkumar and the others making their mark as well.

AR Rahman’s work in Ponniyin Selvan is worth many awards, as the composer once again reserves and delivers his best for Mani Ratnam. There are so many sequences which would have felt underwhelming without the actual weight of his background score. DOP Ravivarman’s frames are different, but they do not quite add to the grandeur of the film, and look functional and static at many places.

On the whole, Ponniyin Selvan 1 is a film that delivers just what we expected – a drama that stays true to its source material. Mani Ratnam decides to do it in his way and that drives down the potential excitement that could have been explored, but nevertheless, this is stuff worth watching on the big screen at least once.  Ponniyin Selvan 1 (PS1) Movie Review by Siddarth Srinivas

Ponniyin Selvan 1 Movie Review (2022)

  • Ponniyin Selvan 1

Mani Ratnam and his fantastic team beautifully capture the essence of Kalki's characters in 'Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1', which infuses a period story with a sense of lived-in reality

Ponniyin Selvan 1 Movie Review in English

Ponniyin Selvan 1 Movie Cast & Crew

Book adaptations are strange beasts, and in my opinion, the only way to truly enjoy a movie based on a book is to… forget the book. Now, of course, that’s impossible when the book is imprinted in your memory, but what I mean by “forget the book” is simply this: Forget the fact that you are going to get the exact book. One of my favourite book-to-movie adaptations is Guide , which became one of Dev Anand’s biggest hits, with great SD Burman songs, a brilliant and beautiful Waheeda Rahman, and superb direction by Vijay Anand. But RK Narayan, the author of the original book, hated the movie. He called the film “a bastard offspring of my novel,” but what he did not understand was that the film was not “his novel”. The film was not “RK Narayan’s Guide ” but “filmmaker Vijay Anand’s version of RK Narayan’s Guide ”.

I recalled this incident when Ponniyin Selvan finally got going after decades of various people trying to make it, and I think the author Kalki Krishnamurthy would have been quite happy with “Mani Ratnam’s version of Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan .” The film transforms a book into an utterly gorgeous piece of cinema, and I’m not just talking about Ravi Varman’s image after stunning image, beginning with a fiery Vikram emerging from a mist. It’s also the writing, by Mani Ratnam,  Elango Kumaravel and Jeyamohan. There's an early visual of the Pandya flag being sliced into two, and one half flutters into the next bit of narrative. That's the spirit of Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1. The book has been slashed, and pages and images flutter across from one bit of exposition to another.

Take the character of the boat woman Poonguzhali, played by Aishwarya Lekshmi. Kalki introduces her during sunset, as she sings a song that is so sweet that nature stands still. The song in the film, written by Siva Ananth, is not the same song that Poonguzhali sings in the book. But it begins with the same word, “ alaikadal ” and AR Rahman’s tune perfectly captures what Kalki calls the “ inba vedhanai ” (sweet sorrow) in her voice. We don't see other things from the book. We don't see Poonguzhali rescuing Vandhiyathevan from quicksand. We don't see her think his face looks like an owl, which annoys his vanity. We don't see him telling her father about his wanting to be ferried across the ocean to Sri Lanka. We don't witness Poonguzhali and Vandhiyathevan's subsequent fight on the boat, and her jumping into the sea to save him. But the image we get gives a sense of all this. We see her emerge from the sea like a mermaid, and he is already on the boat, having already confessed in earlier scenes that he is afraid of water. That's the essence.

In a way, we are talking about Mani Ratnam's approach in Chekka Chivantha Vaanam , where characters and situations were thrust upon us with intensity and severe economy. That film did not work for me at all, but here, this highlights-reel approach works beautifully. The playful scene where Karthi meets Jayaram. The intense conversation between Trisha and Vikram. The tragic tears that well up in Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's eye when she hears the name of a former lover. A following scene between her and Karthi, where we see her manipulative side. The scene where Jayachitra reminds Rahman of his duty. The flirtatious scene between Trisha and Karthi. The seductive scene between Aishwarya and Sarath Kumar. The non-verbal catfights between Aishwarya and Trisha. The boys-will-be-boys scene when Karthi and Jayam Ravi meet. The scene with Trisha's hilarious political move, which shows that the men may be straight-on schemers, but it's the women who are the devious schemers, driving the story with their agenda.

In other words, every character has a strong scene - or three - where their essence is established. One part of me wished for a ten-hour movie. But given two hours and forty-five minutes, there really is no other way to tell this story on screen, and the big plus is seeing Mani Ratnam, the director, in glorious form with his fantastic technical team: Thotta Tharani handles the production design, Sreekar Prasad is the editor, and cinematographer Ravi Varman fills the screen with colour, from the blue of the seas to the browns of the land, from the monochromed dark-pink interiors of a queen's chamber to the all-out rainbow colours of Raatchasa maamane . This is a film filled with constant movement: it's either the chases or the battles or the never-ending mind games that keep coiling around the narrative like a slimy snake. Even the camera, mostly, is free and keeps moving. Very few shots seem "composed"

Could the AR Rahman songs have been axed completely to make way for more narrative? I loved the segue from Vikram's emotional revelation to the drunken revelry of Chola Chola . I loved that a long comic chase involving Karthi segues to the playful Raatchasa maamane . But given the choice, I would have liked the songs to have been replaced by more interaction between the characters. Or maybe more time for the action scenes to play out. (Right now, they seem like truncated versions of longer action blocks.) But then, that's why we have the books. Besides, this story of political intrigue is remarkably reminiscent of the present day, where political groups band together and split as it suits them – so not much exposition is actually needed. Except for the costumes and the language, this is a very contemporary narrative about an ailing king – Sundara Chola, played by Prakash Raj – and his three children. (Again, do we have shades of Chekka Chivantha Vaanam ?)

Instead of trying to dazzle us with epic-ness, Mani Ratnam goes all-out real. There are no "mass" dialogues, the jokes are casually tossed off, the verbal confrontations are delivered in even tones, and even the fights aren't staged as spectacles for the sake of spectacle: some are like the delightfully simple sword fights we saw in the MGR movies. All the actors are fantastic, especially Vikram, Aishwarya, Trisha and Karthi – though Jayaram probably steals the show in an author-backed comic role that has sly shades, too. If Karthi and Jayaram give "big" performances, because their roles are such, they are balanced by the wonderfully minimalistic work by the others. Jayam Ravi uses so little to convey so much - and it's really tough to portray a good guy on screen without making him seem boring. And the end-reveal of a famous minor character in the book is awesome. This character-driven first part perfectly sets the stage for the second installment, which can now hit the ground running. Apart from showing how a huge novel can be convincingly condensed, that is this film's biggest achievement.

Ponniyin Selvan 2 Review: An Epic That Looks Primed To Stand The Test Of Time

Ponniyin Selvan 2 Review: An Epic That Looks Primed To Stand The Test Of Time

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in PS-2 . (courtesy: YouTube )

Cast: Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prakash Raj

Director: Mani Ratnam

Rating: Four stars (out of 5)

With the scale and spectacle of the first part intact in every respect, the Ponniyin Selvan follow-up is shorn of the information overload that made huge demands on those segments of the audience that were not familiar with the long and eventful history of the Chola dynasty. The two parts are roughly identical in length but they differ in the matter of how the plot is underwired. Ponniyin Selvan-2 (PS-2) feels far leaner and more briskly paced than its predecessor.

Palpably more straightforward, the PS-2 narrative, a Tamil historical epic released nationwide in multiple languages, is much easier to grasp and savour. But like the first part, it is frequently eye-popping in terms of its visual grandeur. Mani Ratnam's measured directorial style ensures that the film is much more than just dazzling. It is consistently entertaining and engaging.

PS-2 starts off with a lavishly filmed, wonderfully mounted prologue that takes the audience back to the time of the young Aditha Karikalan's first meeting with orphan girl Nandini, who strays into the kingdom and catches the eye of the Chola prince. The film then dives into the many conspiracies, internecine tussles and secret liaisons that threaten the kingdom.

The script does not let the spotlight move away from the wide spectrum of the drama that is at the heart of the sweeping saga of ambition, betrayal, guilt and expiation. An enemy's enemy is a friend - that is a line that is spouted on more than one occasion. The Cholas have no dearth of enemies lying in wait to forge strategic alliances and launch an attack.

Ponniyin Selvan , based on an adaptation of Kalki's magnum opus by director Mani Ratnam, B. Jeyamohan and Elango Kumaravel, takes some liberties with the much-loved literary work. It yields dividends because the departures are never unduly self-conscious. The overall impact of the construct is accentuated by Ratnam's firm grasp on the technical aspects and the textual essence of the story.

PS-2 , certainly to a significantly greater extent than the first part, is remarkably sinewy and compact whole despite its nearly three-hour runtime. The film is a treat for the eyes. Cinematographer Ravi Varman composes frames that capture the expanse of the locations even as they drill into the granular details of the exquisite images that the camera conjures up. The appeal is neither just sensory or superficial. PS-2 has enough in its folds to touch the mind and the heart.

The pomp and pageantry that are woven into the narrative tapestry do not take attention away from the story - a testimony to Ratnam's ability to achieve an alchemy of visual flourishes, emotional traction and technical finesse. The multiplicity of characters can still baffle a tad, but the free-flowing drama and action on the screen is never less than spellbinding.

On one level, PS-2 continues to be a story of unrequited love. Karikalan's (Vikram) choppy relationship with Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) and the danger that it poses to the Chola crown prince constitute an important part of the sprawling plot.

On another, the film addresses the making of the model ruler who was destined to usher in the golden age of the Chola dynasty. It tracks the steps taken by Aditha Karikalan's younger, even-tempered brother, Arunmozhi Varman (Jayam Ravi), towards the throne as well as the ups and downs that confront Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan (Karthi), the Vanara clan warrior-prince, as he fights off a series of physical threats.

Arunmozhi's voice of reason and restraint is central to the film because it delivers one of the central themes of the story - the nature of power and ambition weighed against the duties of a ruler. The benign and brave Prince puts a King's purpose into perspective. In one scene, he is advised to hoodwink his people and slip out of a tight spot. He refuses. Without trust in your subjects, governance isn't possible, he asserts. That truism has timeless resonance.

When PS-2 gets into its stride post-credits, Arunmozhi is believed to have perished in a shipwreck, there is talk of revenge in the air and a band of Pandyan warriors are in the middle of covert preparations for an attack on the Cholas. The kingdom is surrounded by traitors and threats lurk at every corner for the ailing King Sundara Chola (Prakash Raj) and his children.

PS-2 reveals the story of the grey-haired Mandakini (Aishwarya in a double role), who the audience had seen briefly in the final moments of PS-1 . It delves into the reason for the resemblance that she bears to Nandini and the nature of her relationship with Veerapandiyan, whose dastardly beheading drove a wedge between the Cholas and the Pandyans.

The quality of the performances that the director extracts from the actors is extraordinarily consistent, with Chiyan Vikram's powerful presence serving as a firm anchor for a few of the film's most important sequences. The others in the cast, notably Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi and Jayam Ravi, are also always on the ball and lose no opportunity to make their presence felt.

Trisha (as Chola Princess Kundavai), Sobhita Dhulipala (as Kodumbalur Princess Vaanathi) and Aishwarya Lekshmi (as Poonghuzali alias 'lady of the sea' Samuthirakumari), too, have their moments although they are somewhat crowded out of the film.

With literally a cast of hundreds to deal with, Ratnam does remarkably well to fit them all in and impart to each of the characters a distinct space in the larger scheme of things. Veteran actors like Prakash Raj, R. Sharath Kumar and R. Parthiban have to make do limited footage but they are by no means reduced to irrelevance.

Ponniyin Selvan-2  completes what PS-1 set out to create - a screen version of a daunting text. The result is a cinematic work of monumental proportions, an epic that looks primed to stand the test of time.

Ponniyin Selvan I movie review: Aishwarya Rai is a revelation in Mani Ratnam’s masterful adaptation of classic

Ponniyin selvan i movie review: mani ratnam has managed the unthinkable--adapt the literary classic with finesse and impact. all actors do their parts well but aishwarya rai is a revelation..

There’s a reason why Mani Ratnam is called a master storyteller. In Ponniyin Selvan I , based on the eponymous novel by Kalki, the veteran filmmaker shows who’s the boss, and in what’s easily his most ambitious film ever, he passes with flying colors. Mani Ratnam achieves the unthinkable with his film adaptation of the Ponniyin Selvan which he presents with enough thrills, intrigue and drama to keep you pinned. Also read: Ponniyin Selvan I release live updates: Mani Ratnam film set to be highest-opening Tamil film of 2022

Ponniyin Selvan I movie review: Aishwarya Rai shines as the antagonist Nandini in the Mani Ratnam film.

The story is majorly centered on Vanthiyathevan (Karthi), who is entrusted by Aditha Karikalan ( Vikram ) with the task of delivering important messages to his father Sundara Chola (Prakash Raj) and his sister Kundhavi (Trisha). As per the message, plans are being laid out by princely state kings to bring down the empire. It becomes Vanthiyathevan’s duty to find out what the evil plans are and who’s orchestrating everything to tarnish the glory of the Chola Empire. Upon investigation, it is learnt that Nandini (Aishwarya Rai) is the mastermind behind the efforts to bring down the Chola dynasty. But what has turned Nandini into a revenge-seeking princess remains a mystery.

If you’re walking into Ponniyin Selvan expecting an SS Rajamouli-style action spectacle, you might be disappointed. Mani Ratnam relies more on drama to create the tension and it works to a large extent. The film definitely needed more high moments to make you root for the characters, especially someone like, say, Arulmozhi Varman ( Jayam Ravi ), who is the successor of the Chola kingdom. It’s such a powerful character but he gets a very bland introduction scene that falls flat.

Thankfully, the masterful writing makes up for the lack of more crowd-pleasing moments. It’s really commendable of Mani Ratnam and his team of writers to pick crucial moments from the five-part novel and turn them into captivating scenes for the big screen. Some of the film’s most crucial scenes involving key characters of the story have been so well adapted for the screen. For instance, every scene involving Aishwarya Rai (who is a revelation) is so well written that it leaves a lasting impact.

Mani Ratnam extracts solid performances from each of his actors. Irrespective of their screen time, each actor stands out and it’s a treat to watch them bring out their best. Aishwarya Rai as Nandini has to be the pick of the actors as she has very little to say in terms of dialogues but has so much to express with her eyes and she nails it so convincingly.

Karthi as Vanthiyathevan keeps the mood in an otherwise serious film very lively with his slightly exaggerated but strong performance. Vikram as Aaditha Karikalan lands a very emotional part and as a tragic hero delivers a measured performance. Jayam Ravi as Arulmozhi Varma only appears in the second half but has enough scenes to score and leave a mark. One of the reasons the film leaves the intended impact is because of the superb casting which includes good work by the supporting cast as well. As usual, AR Rahman brings out his A-game in yet another collaboration with Mani Ratnam.

A Twitter user wrote, "#PonniyanSelvan is a magnificent piece of Period CINEMA (Proper Cinema, not Movie) with an outstanding cast. For period cinema lovers, it doesn't get any better than this. Comparing it with Bahubali is just amateurishly silly."

Mani Ratnam says he owes it to Rajamouli's 'Baahubali' for the idea!

Mani Ratnam also in an interview with a news daily reportedly said that Rajamouli’s ‘Baahubali’ created a road for the film to be made into two parts so it will be easy for the audience to consume it. He added that he owes it to the ‘RRR’ director as otherwise, the crew would have tried to fit the entire film in one part making it impossible to shoot and edit.

After nearly a seven-decade-long wait, the novel Ponniyin Selvan written by Kalki Krishnamurthy has been made into a feature film by none other than the master filmmaker Mani Ratnam. He has brought a huge star cast together to make this period film. Produced jointly by Lyca Productions and Madras Talkies the film is split into two parts. The much anticipated mega-budget film’s part 1 has hit the screens today. Let’s see if it has lived up to the expectations or not.

The king of the Chola dynasty places the responsibility of ruling the kingdom on his brother Sundara Choludu (Prakash Raj) due to his ill health. After a while, Sundara Choludu transfers it to his son Aditya Karikaaludu (Vikram). Madhuranthakudu (Rehman) who is the actual heir and son of the Chola dynasty’s late king gets disappointed with this decision. He seeks the help of another king Pallavaraaya (Sarathkumar) and they plan a secret meeting in Kadambur to discuss the future plan of action.

On the other hand, Aditya Karikaaludu gets suspicious that some conspiracy is going on inside the kingdom and orders his army commander Vallavarayan Vanthiyadevudu (Karthi) to find out the actual truth. Did Vallavarayan complete his job? What is the importance of Nandhini (Aishwarya Rai) in this story? How did Ponniyin Selvan Arunmozhi((Jayam Ravi), brother of Aditya and the next king of the Chola kingdom stop this connivance? Watch the film to know all the answers.

Plus Points:

This PAN Indian project has got many characters but in the first part, Karthi gets the meaty role. He is the entertaining factor in this seriously driven period drama. His flirting scenes with women evoke decent laughs. The actor has given it all for the film and amuses the audience whenever he appears on the screen.

After Karthi, it is Jayam Ravi and Aishwarya Rai who get the key roles and more screen time. Aishwarya Rai’s character is very significant to the story and she aced it to perfection. Jayam Ravi who played the titular role is seen only in the second half but does well. His character will have more prominence in the sequel.

Trisha and Vikram are seen very briefly but their screen presence leaves a mark and raises the impact. Trisha looks beautiful and so does Aishwarya Rai. The drama at key places in both the halves is interesting and creates a few engaging moments. The fight sequence between Karthi and Jayam Ravi and the other action block in the second half is composed well and holds our attention.

Minus Points:

Though the film’s story is interesting, it is filled with more drama and this becomes way too much for a common viewer to grasp what’s going on. The first part itself has so much content that it will take up two parts in itself to showcase. The screenplay at times becomes confusing and convoluted.

One more major drawback is the snail-paced narrative, which tests the patience of the audience. When compared to the dull and slow first half, the second half is quite better. The film has many boring moments bogging down the impact as the director stuck to a flat screenplay without many high moments.

The film needs some serious trimming as the scenes are way too lengthy. The climax fight sequence is one such important moment in the movie but it is heavily dragged for no reason and it lacks clarity too. The cliffhanger moment actually comes with a twist but due to the bad climax, one cannot connect to it.

Technical Aspects:

PS -1 is said to be produced on a large scale and the production values are remarkable. The production design by Thota Tharrani adds more value to this larger-than-life saga. The makers opted for more realistic locations and they made sure the frames look rich. Also, they are easy on the eye.

The costume work done by Eka Lakhani is beguiling and the female leads Aishwarya Rai and Trisha look drop dead gorgeous and highly captivating. Music by Academy award-winning AR Rahman is pleasant and in a few instances, he gave some very high-quality background score to elevate the proceedings. The camerawork by Ravi Varman is neat and he has shown the Cholas period very grandly through his lens. The editing of the film as said earlier is below par making the film a tiring watch.

Mani Ratnam is one of the great Indian directors who is known for his majestic movies. But all the sheer technical brilliance of PS-1 is let down by his middling narration. His intention and dream to bring this great story are visible but he should have been more cautious with his storytelling. The screenplay is co-written by Mani Ratnam and Elango Kumaravel but they didn’t succeed in coming up with an engaging and attention grabbing film.

On the whole, Ponniyin Selvan part: 1 has a good storyline but it is dull and does not have the needed high moments. The lead cast’s performance, sterling production values, and first-rate visuals are brought down by Mani Ratnam’s underwhelming presentation. The first half in particular is complicated with too many characters getting introduced. The Tamil audience will connect to the story more but the Telugu folks can give this film a shot if you love watching period dramas with a huge star cast. Just have your expectations in check.

  • Trivia Director Mani Ratnam and music composer A.R. Rahman did not work with lyricist Vairamuthu on this film, following the latter's #MeToo allegations and controversy. This marked the end of the longest director-composer-lyricist trio in Tamil Cinema, which began since A.R. Rahman's debut on Mani Ratnam's Roja (1992).
  • Goofs The Marwari breed of horses were used for shooting this film. A horse had died in shooting too. In history though, the fastest horses in the world were imported from Arabia for warfare in the Chozha cavalry.

Parthibendran Pallavan : I heard you died at Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar's hands, after getting caught

Vanthiyathevan : I think that I haven't died yet indeed

Parthibendran Pallavan : Your tongue is sharper than sword

Vanthiyathevan : One day you can try my sword's sharpness as well

  • Crazy credits Vanthiyathevan was supposed to be a spy in various scenes, and depicted in ordinary garb in the novel. However, he's always in an armor.
  • Alternate versions In Singapore, the film initially received an NC16 classification due to moments of violence occurred in the film. It is also noted that the Hindi version also received the same classification. The distributor opted to edited the moments of violence in order to lower the rating from NC16 to PG13. Both PG13 edited versions became the standard versions to release in theaters of Singapore.

Tv/streaming, collections, great movies, chaz's journal, contributors, ponniyin selvan: part ii.

ps 1 movie review behindwoods

Now streaming on:

Now's not the best time to appreciate "Ponniyin Selvan: Part II,” the back half of a highly anticipated Tamil language adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy ’s revered multi-volume historical drama. The indeterminate future’s probably the moment for this sequel, by which time S.S. Rajamouli's influence might not seem as important to contemporary Indian pop cinema, and Indian movie lovers can (maybe) see with clearer eyes the many imitators of "Baahubali," Rajamouli’s trend-setting two-part mythopoetic fantasy.

Adapting “Ponniyin Selvan” has been a dream project for a few Indian filmmakers, including writer/director Mani Ratnam , who’s best known to American cinephiles for helming the epochal 1998 Bollywood romantic drama “Dil Se.” Ratnam has also admitted that his two-part version of “Ponniyin Selvan” could not have been made without the inspiration and success of “Baahubali.” It’s easy to see why based on “Ponniyin Selvan: Part II,” a sequel that, like Rajamouli’s “Baahubali: The Conclusion,” often feels like an involved-but-satisfying de-escalation of the first movie’s dramatic tension. You can’t enjoy “Ponniyin Selvan: Part II” without having already seen “Ponniyin Selvan: Part I,” not unless you’ve read Krishnamurthy’s books.

Some good news, which is also bad news: many viewers have probably already read Krishnamurthy’s popular epic, which was originally serialized in “Kalki” magazine throughout the early 1950s. Anyone who hasn’t read the book, but still wants to see “Ponniyin Selvan: Part II” on a big screen should know that “Part I” was more about the itinerant Vanar prince Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan (Karthi) than the beloved title character (Jayan Ravi)—a nickname for the 10 th century Chola dynasty Prince Arunmozhi—or his hothead older brother Aditha (Vikram).

Arunmozhi and Aditha necessarily take more central roles in “Ponniyin Selvan: Part II,” and so do the other main subjects of “Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1,” like the princes’ troubled and presumed wicked stepmother Nandini ( Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) and their treacherous rival Madhuranthakan (Rahman). Everybody suspects Nandini of scheming to betray her husband—and also murder Aditha, who also suspects and has romantic tension with Nandini.

There’s more Nandini in “Ponniyin Selvan: Part II,” and a lot more supporting characters who either support or defy her, like the Chola chieftains who not-so-secretly back Madhuranthakan, or the Chola princes’ many advisers, like their sister Kundavai ( Trisha Krishnan ) and, oh yeah, Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan. Vallavaraiyan, an itinerant fabulist, zips around “Ponniyin Selvan: Part I” without a formal invitation; he negotiates facetime with various high-powered characters using token favors—a sword, a signet ring, and hand-written messages—and effectively unites the many threads of Krishnamurthy’s sprawling narrative.

In “Part I,” Vallavairyan embodies the Byzantine, freely-associated story-telling traditions that clearly inspired both Ratnam and his two Tamil-speaking co-writers. What arguably puts “Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2” over the top, as an overburdened sequel to a long-gestating adaptation, is Ratnam’s characteristic visual acuity, his co-writers’ careful attention to detail, and his mega-watt ensemble cast’s performances. Nandini, in particular, seems more like an emotionally complex character in “Ponniyin Selvan: Part II” than she did in the last movie. And both Arunmozhi and Aditha smolder more often, though only Vikram gets to show off with equally angsty dialogue like, “Happiness and peace elude those who hate themselves.”

All of the low-key craftsmanship that went into the otherwise high-toned “Ponniyin Selvan: Part I” is still present in “Ponniyin Selvan: Part II,” which was shot concurrently with the last installment over 150 days from 2019 through 2021, and then split in two a la “Baahubali.” Ratnam’s characters have less time indulge in romantic sighing and unrequited romance, though he does make the most of those scenes. I won’t spoil your enjoyment by telling who gazes longingly at whom, since being led around by the nose is a good part of the fun in both “Ponniyin Selvan” movies. That also makes judging “Ponniyin Selvan: Part II” a little difficult right now, since it, like “Ponniyin Selvan: Part I,” will likely appreciate with time.

There’s probably nothing in this sequel that could not have also been done by the makers of the many other recent “Baahubali”-inspired mytho-historic epics, so there’s not much that essentially distinguishes “Ponniyin Selvan: Part II” as “A Mani Ratnam Film,” as an opening credit says. Then again, it’s a relief to see that “Ponniyin Selvan: Part II” looks and moves as well as it does, even if one suspects that it will also hold up when it inevitably surfaces on streaming services like Prime Video, where you can still catch up with “Ponniyin Selvan: Part I.” Ratnam and his collaborators stick the landing on their gargantuan pot-boiler, and while Krishnamurthy’s world may not look as grand as it seemed, either in the moviemakers’ heads or on the page, it is big enough to get lost in.

In limited theatrical release now.

Ponniyin Selvan 1 release and review LIVE UPDATES: Mani Ratnam delivers a royal epic, to collect Rs 50 cr on day 1 in box office

Ponniyin selvan 1 movie review, movie launch live updates: mani ratnam's magnum opus is out in theatres. the film stars vikram, aishwarya rai bachchan, jayam ravi, karthi, trisha, aishwarya lekshmi, sobhita dhulipala, prabhu, r. sarathkumar, vikram prabhu, among others..

ps 1 movie review behindwoods

Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan 1 is out in theatres. Starring Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R Sarathkumar and Vikram Prabhu in significant roles, PS 1 has been in the making since 2019 and in a recent interview, Jayam Ravi revealed that both the parts of the film were shot in 150 days.

Ponniyin Selvan is based on the novel of the same name by Kalki Krishnamurthy, which was first published in 1955. Talking about adapting the book into a film, Mani Ratnam told Film Companion, “I think when you converted it (novel) into a script, you have to follow some spine and go with it. My writer told me the best line I heard before the film. He said, ‘Read the book once, throw it away and then you write.’”

ps 1 movie review behindwoods

Vikram, who plays the role of Aditha Karikalan, the crown prince and the commander of Northern troops in Sundara Chola’s reign, recently spoke to PTI about the ensemble cast and said, “It’s a very rare thing to feel comfortable and not feel threatened by your co-actors. It’s very rare that you want them to excel in what they’re doing and want to keep up with that.” Praising Karthi and Jayam Ravi, he said, “Karthi carries the whole film on his shoulder. The whole story goes through his character… It’s not straight at all, there are so many ups and downs. It’s a crazy trip for him. It’s a trippy character. And Ravi’s character is again something else, very different where he’s so composed and he’s so calm but there’s so much confusion and so many things going on in his head. At the same time, he has to be princely. And so these are roles that as actors you really want to get into.”

A Twitter user @ BrandAK4Eva wrote, " Done watching #PonniyanSelvan #ponniyinselvan1 #PS1. To be honest, I went for the movie with low expectations but ended up being fully satisfied and now eagerly waiting for Part 2. I like the realistic approach of the film. Engaging and all the actors has performed well."

The ace director had told The New Indian Express, "Fitting Ponniyin Selvan into a single film was the biggest challenge I had when thinking of adapting. Today, the audience has embraced the idea of duologies and trilogies, and this seemed like the perfect time for me to explore the format. If I had made the material as a single film, I would have been critical of myself for leaving out so many details."

Twitter user @Gowdamakash wrote, "I never read the novel.I watch the film.I went to witness the story of the Chola dynasty.I was so invested in the film and the film took me into its world.I was wondering how a film could be too good without any flaws & keep us engaged with our mouths open. A Stellar cast had been assembled, Every character was brilliant with their performances. I loved the comedy of Nambi and the show-stealer Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan."

After all the glitz and glamour around #PonniyanSelvan1 , I just decided to give this movie a go. I was a little wary of Mani Ratnam coming up with a war drama / epic because that's not a genre that Mani has ever handled. Mani Ratnam's film is a 'largely faithful and brilliant adaptation and has no dull moments'. Indian Express critic gave the film four stars and wrote, "Mani Ratnam understands Kalki's novel is a mainstream page-turner, so he retains its flavour and neither intellectualises it, nor dumb it down."

Alaikadal (Doobi Doobi) – a soulful composition by AR Rahman after a long time – is that song for singer Antara Nandy. Singing for Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 1, a period drama based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s eponymous and emblematic Tamil novel, Nandy, in her debut, does justice to the abundant crests and troughs in this compelling composition. After the humongous success of Nadodi Mannan (1958), MGR declared his next film will be the big screen adaptation of Ponniyin Selvan. In the year 1959, he also published an advertisement announcing the same in a December edition of the monthly film magazine Nadigan Kural. SS Rajamouli couldn't believe it when actor Jayam Ravio told him that both the parts of the Mani Ratnam film were shot just 150 days. Ravi shared, “I told Rajamouli sir that we have finished two parts of Ponniyin Selvan in 150 days. So, Rajamouli sir got up from his chair and said Ravi don’t say this and scare me, please. It took five years for me to shoot both films (Baahubali). That’s the respect he has for Mani sir. He later sat down and asked, ‘How do you work?’ He is learning from the master.” Read more

In a press conference in New Delhi, Jayam Ravi recalled the time when he met Ratnam for the first time to talk about the role. “He (the king) is Ponniyin Selvan aka Raja Raja Chola and it’s an important role. I was feeling that pressure but Mani sir made sure he took it off me by sharing certain details about the character. He told me that ‘Ravi, this is very important for me. We both have to do it and I cannot do it alone. So, whatever concentration you have, put it on the table. Let’s do it together.’” Read more

Actor Trisha, who essays the role of Princess Kundavai in the upcoming magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1, posted a picture of herself with her co-actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan on Twitter a few days ahead of the film's release. Aishwarya plays the role of Queen Nandini in the Mani Ratnam directorial.

The trade experts expects that PS:1’s opening day collection will be around Rs 25 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. The film’s global box office is expected to be around Rs 70 crore. If the predictions come true, the first-three day worldwide collection of this film will be upwards of Rs 150 crore. Rakesh Gowthaman, who manages Chennai’s popular twin-screen Vettri Theatres said, "People who have read the book, who have not gone to a theatre in a long time, would want to watch this film on the big screen. I know a 75-year-old person and the last film he watched in the theatre was Baahubali 2; now, he wants to come to cinemas to watch this film. The crowd we are going to see is going to have a lot of family audience and senior citizens. This is not the crowd we saw for Vikram or KGF 2. If the movie is a good watch, it might break the record of Vikram in Tamil Nadu."

Ponniyin Selvan 1 has generated a lot of interest in cinemagoers. Rakesh Gowthaman, who manages Chennai’s popular twin-screen Vettri Theatres, told indianexpress.com, "People who have read the book, who have not gone to a theatre in a long time, would want to watch this film on the big screen.

PS 1 will face competition in the Hindi belt from Vikram Vedha, which stars Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan in the lead roles. It’s said that the movie may open to Rs 2 crore in box office receipts in the north Indian circuit. Even in that case, it’s still a good start for an original Tamil film. If it generates good word of mouth, the movie may perform better.

Upon watching the film, one might finally get the answer to the question why is Ponniyin Selvan one of the best selling novels in the country.

  7. Ponniyin Selvan Part 1 Movie Review: Mani Ratnam's epic adaptation is

Director Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 starring Karthi, Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha and Jayam Ravi is an epic period drama that is technically sound. However, the film might end up underwhelming for book lovers, says our review.

  8. Ponniyin Selvan Review

PS 1 is largely condensed, and plot driven. So, the emotions of characters and the significance of crucial events don't register as impactfully as one would have liked. But it also has some other things going for it. It delivers on the joys of watching a big scale movie with a studded star cast.

  9. Ponniyin Selvan 1 (PS1) Movie Review

Ponniyin Selvan 1 has a very good support star led by a superb Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Sarathkumar and the others making their mark as well. There are so many sequences which would have felt underwhelming without ...

  13. For All its Beauty and Dense Plotting, Ponniyin Selvan 1 Feels Incomplete

Adapted by Ratnam, Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan, PS-1 is crowded with a density of events, perspectives, conspiracies, and counter-conspiracies. Every frame is overflowing with possibilities. There is so much going on and an impatience to move on — every scene has within it embedded the next scene.

  17. Ponniyin Selvan: Telugu Movie Review

PS -1 is said to be produced on a large scale and the production values are remarkable. The production design by Thota Tharrani adds more value to this larger-than-life saga. The makers opted for more realistic locations and they made sure the frames look rich.

  19. Ponniyin Selvan: Part II movie review (2023)

What arguably puts "Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2" over the top, as an overburdened sequel to a long-gestating adaptation, is Ratnam's characteristic visual acuity, his co-writers' careful attention to detail, and his mega-watt ensemble cast's performances.
