Ph.D in Nursing

Ph.D. nursing is a research-based degree that takes between 4-6 years to complete. This course entails conducting nursing research to improve healthcare facilities. Candidates for a Ph.D. The nursing programme must have a Master's degree in Nursing or another equivalent discipline from a recognized university with minimum aggregate of 55%. Students who complete this research-based programme will be qualified to work as a Chief Nursing Officer, Rehabilitation Specialist, Critical Care Nurse, Nurse Manager, Community Health Specialist, and other related positions.

PhD in Nursing is a higher level degree of nursing education that is basically done after the completion of M.Phil. in Nursing or M.Sc. in Nursing. The major role of this course is to develop the leadership quality of the nurses to the finest level to build them as an expertise. The MSN Family Nurse Practitioner program is a professional degree which prepares experienced Registered Nurses to sit for certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner. The program builds on the background of professional nurses to prepare them to function as primary care providers in the emerging collaborative world of healthcare.

Housed in the Wellstar College of Health & Human Services on Kennesaw State’s Kennesaw, Ga., campus, the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Family Nurse Practitioner program maintains close community ties with a variety of healthcare agencies. A heavy emphasis is placed upon precepted clinical experiences.

The MSN Family Nurse Practitioner Program is a 44-credit hour course of study that lasts five semesters full time or eight semesters part time. The coursework has three components:

• 17 credit hours of core classes
• 9 credit hours of primary care area of concentration
• 18 credit hours of practicum experience

Please note: All classes are offered in an online or hybrid format with a maximum of one weekend a month in on-campus classes and labs.  

Admission Criteria

Admission decisions for acceptance into Kennesaw State University’s Nurse Practitioner school are based on the overall evaluation of the following components:

• Baccalaureate degree in nursing from a nationally accredited institution with a satisfactory GPA of at least 3.0
• Minimum one year of full-time professional experience as a Registered Nurse, documented in a professional resume (experience must have occurred within the last five years and have involved direct patient care)
• Current unencumbered RN licensure in the state of Georgia (submit copy)
• Written statement of personal program goals
• Undergraduate research course
• Two professional letters of reference
• No GRE required. 

Application Deadlines

• Priority Deadline: January 15, 2024
• Regular Deadline: April 28, 2024

Candidacy for Graduation

To graduate, a grade of B (80) or better is required in all courses. MSN candidates must petition to graduate at least one semester prior to completion of their degree requirements.

Admission Information for our Ph.D. in Nursing – Nursing Education

Admission requirements.

At this time, our Ph.D. in Nursing Education degree is limited in certain states. Please view the licensure/certification requirements for your state. International students can contact the School of Nursing related to their degree interest.

• A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
• Send official college transcripts (mailed as sealed, unopened copies or sent via a direct electronic transcript system). A regionally or nationally accredited Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree with at least a 3.0 GPA is required for admission in good standing.
• Contact information for one recommender
• Statement of Purpose
• One year minimum experience as a Registered Nurse (RN). Registered Nurse Licensure verification will be conducted annually until the curriculum for the online Ph.D. in Nursing: Nursing Education is completed. As the student, you are responsible to notify the School of nursing should any restrictions be placed on your license.
• Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. For information on alternative assessments or TOEFL waivers, please call Admissions or view the official International Admissions policy .

Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

• Be in your final term and planning to start your doctoral degree after the last day of class for your master’s degree.
• Complete a Master’s Self-Certification Form confirming your completion date. You may download the form from the Forms and Downloads page or contact an admissions counselor to submit the form on your behalf.
• Submit an official transcript to confirm that you are in your final term. The preliminary transcript must show that you are within 6 credit hours of completion for a 30-48 credit hour master’s degree or within 9 credit hours of completion for a 49+ credit hour master’s degree.
• Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment in the new doctoral degree.

2023-2024 alumni award recipients, monica samples, bsn, rn - outstanding young alumni award.

Currently a nurse in the Stead Family Children’s Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Monica Samples (20BSN) is the recipient of the 2023-24 Outstanding Young Alumni Award. No stranger to nursing awards, as a student, she was recognized by her peers with the 2020 DAISY in Training Award.

Since graduating, Samples has provided the highest level of care as a nurse in the PICU. She pursued further training and is now qualified to care for children receiving the most advanced level of medical interventions.

“The early success of Monica’s career is not a surprise to anybody who knows her,” her nominator writes. “She is gifted in her capabilities to manage complex medical interventions while meeting the multifaceted needs of her patients and their family members with an extraordinary depth of compassion, integrity and respect.”

Karen Bjøro, PhD, RN - Distinguished Alumni Award

Dr. Karen Bjøro (08PhD) is the 2023-2024 College of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Award recipient.

 Throughout her 40-year nursing career, Bjøro has worked locally, nationally, and internationally to strengthen the profession and improve global health.

Dr. Bjøro’s passion for nursing is evident through her activity with many Norwegian and international nursing groups. During her eight-year term as vice president of the Norwegian Nurses Organisation, she was heavily involved in fostering collaboration and exchange between the NNO and nurse organizations in Rwanda and Malawi. Bjøro currently serves as the second vice president of the International Council of Nurses

“Dr. Bjøro has been a leader in global health and nursing internationally,” writes her nominator. “She represents the important impact graduates of the college have made not only in our country but around the world.”
