Life Kit's Resolution Planner: 40 ideas and tips to start your New Year

What do you want to accomplish this year? Scroll through Life Kit's expert guides for practical and inspiring ways to grow in 2023.

Ah, the new year. It's a time to sketch out your goals and think about the roadmap to get there.

Life Kit has curated a list of some of our best episodes to help set you up for success in 2023. They include practical guidance (like how to pick a birth control or ask for a raise ), forward-thinking advice (like how to save for retirement or freeze your eggs ) and tips on how to live more mindfully (like how to reduce food waste or set boundaries ).

It might feel hard to start a new habit, but as BJ Fogg, a behavior scientist at Stanford and author of Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything , told Life Kit in a 2020 interview , "it's easier to create habits and change than most people think, and it's faster than most people think. It can even be fun if you do it in the right way."

The key is to understand how behavior change happens. You've got to have the motivation, the ability to do the behavior and a prompt, says Fogg. "And the prompt is anything that reminds you to do this behavior now. And when those three things come together at the same moment, a behavior happens."

200 New Year’s Resolution Ideas for Career, Work, and Personal Growth

A New Year’s Resolution is a Filipino tradition. Or at least, that’s how Filipino students deemed it. Every January of each year, on the first day of class, students from elementary, high school, and college declare their New Year’s resolutions.

When I was in high school, I wrote my New Year’s Resolution essays (as it was often required) during Christmas breaks. It is still cool to write resolutions these days for fun.

I do Impact Goals, Quarterly Goals, and Monthly Projects, which are better than most New Year’s Resolutions. I will share these with you later if you are interested. An excellent support to your New Year’s resolutions is  3 Words . Find out how to do it.

I am publishing this three days before the New Year. So you will have plenty of time to write your New Year’s Resolution or do the alternatives.

New Year’s Resolution Ideas

Typically, people get a pen and a piece of paper to write one, two, three, or even ten New Year’s resolutions. They write down whatever comes to mind.

A few get post-it notes and Sharpie pens. They write on each note one resolution. They may come up with dozens. Then, they pick the top ten they want to do next year.

I separate my New Year’s resolutions for family and work.

I use a mind map when I make resolutions. It is creative. I write the year, then encircle it. I think of three words. For work, my three words for 2023 are transformation, experience, and dollars. Then, I will generate more ideas from each word.

Another exercise that I do, which I can do any month of the year, is Stop, Continue, and Start.

Most people consider the brainstorming session as the only step to writing a resolution. This is why most of the resolutions don’t have staying power. Later, I will show you ways to make your resolutions compelling.

If you are looking for New Year’s Resolution ideas, these will help you. Open each accordion pane to find resolutions that may inspire you

New Year's Resolution is a Fresh Start

What is a New Year’s Resolution?

A New Year’s Resolution is a declaration of what a person intends or resolves to do at the beginning of the year. Typically, people decide to stop doing undesirable traits or behaviors, continue doing good practices, and start working on personal goals or improving behaviors.

When you ask Filipinos, more than half will say they have New Year’s Resolution. About 1/3 say that they have written resolutions. You will find 100 examples of New Year’s Resolutions below.

Nearly half of those who don’t make New Year’s Resolution say it does not work.

Importance of New Year’s Resolution

Most people think that they need to do more these past years. The Covid-19 pandemic, for two years, made us anxious about the future. I remember that the New Year of 2021 was the first time most people stayed home. In January 2022, we recorded the highest number of Covid-19 infections.

But 2023 promises a better year. And once again, people talk about New Year’s Resolutions. And that’s good news.

There are mixed opinions as to the importance of resolutions. And I understand why.

Some people failed to continue what they started. Or they missed many opportunities of doing what they believed they should have done many New Year’s resolutions ago.

In 1996, Carlo declared that he would enroll again to finish his Master of Arts in Teaching. It was always a part of his New Year’s Resolutions. This year, he decided that pursuing it was of no use. The 30 units he earned will no longer be credited. He procrastinated. And procrastination sealed his fate, he believed.

A friend made a New Year’s Resolution to start jogging five years ago. So on January 4 last year, she started jogging around our neighborhood. She continued doing it for 15 more days. Then, she decided to pause for a week because of an important assignment. The one week became months. Yesterday, she said that she’d start again.

Thirty years ago, I “resolved” to write a book. I began with full enthusiasm, then eventually stopped. In Filipino, we call this habit Ningas Kugon. However, a friend commissioned me two years ago to write a book. I wrote that book in 16 days. I am confident I can write at least one book in 2023.

All New Year’s resolutions are aspirations for personal growth and development. And though you don’t have to wait for January 1 to start thinking about choosing the right things to do, a New Year’s resolution, as a tradition, reminds us about second chances, and the simple act of declaring our intentions helps us think deeply about the future.

new year's resolution essay 2023

Panata sa Bagong Taon

For Filipinos, a new year is a promise of a new life. It is more than just a day after December 31.

It is a fresh start.

In Filipino, New Year’s Resolution means panata sa bagong taon. It is not just an aspiration or a wish. It is a vow.

It is a fresh start. Whatever happened last year and the years before that have no hold on our future. We can choose to live the life we want.

Most New Year’s Resolutions aren’t fulfilled because of misunderstandings. But we will start behaving differently when we fully embrace that a new year is a fresh start and a resolution is a vow.

new year's resolution essay 2023

Why Some New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work

I have already given you three reasons why New Resolutions don’t work. And I have also given you an idea of why it works. So allow me to expound and expand.

Procrastination

The lack of willpower makes us delay. Procrastination is a silent killer. It murders our dreams without our notice.

People think that there is always tomorrow. We only have today; tomorrow is not promised to anyone.

If something is significant, it must be done today.

A resolution is a vow; it is not just a wish. A wish is something that may happen someday. A vow is your business today.

Ningas Kugon

Have you noticed that lifetime gym memberships are sold for a 50 percent discount during December and January? That’s because many people overestimate themselves.

A lifetime gym membership often gets used in three months.

If you are in Quezon Memorial Circle in the early mornings, you will see thousands of joggers. Some of them start at 5 am. But, during the first six weeks of the year, you’ll notice that the numbers are five times more than usual.

Ningas kugon is a lot better than procrastination. Starting something is already tricky. But success is measured by how we finished, not by how we started our games.

Ningas Kugon is often the result of a lack of commitment, discipline, and momentum.

Lack of Commitment

A committed person dedicates his time to a cause that truly matters to him. Those who cannot commit fail again and again.

A committed person displays patience, persistence, and perseverance. You can only be that person when you believe you can make things happen. Without that belief, there is no urgency. Without that belief, you will allow your fear to delay or stop you as soon as you face your first challenge.

Consider that a resolution is a vow to your future self.

Lack of Discipline

I see that even the most motivated people need to honor their resolutions. They can start, but they need to learn how to finish.

They work on many things but only sometimes on the most important thing.

A person with discipline does what they value most every day. They don’t allow their circumstances to dictate their actions.

New Year’s resolutions are good for us. They are part of the solution. Unfortunately, they don’t work when people don’t have the discipline to execute them.

Lack of Momentum

People need more momentum to finish what they start. There needs to be more than just doing the first step to walking a thousand miles. You need to follow the first with another step, and you need to keep moving until you reach a thousand miles.

Followthrough makes a breakthrough.

To create momentum, you need focus, consistency, and action.

By telling you why resolutions often do not work, can you tell how to make them work?

new year's resolution essay 2023

People often write these New Year’s Resolution ideas. As I have mentioned, I used different methods to come up with my list, and brainstorming is just the first stage. If you will only copy any of these resolutions, it is more likely that you’ll do a ningas kugon.

Resolutions that get done are clear and compelling.

I will show you different ways to write clear and compelling New Year’s Resolutions.

My 3 Words for 2023

new year's resolution essay 2023

Daig ng Maagap ang Masipag: Be A Proactive Hard Worker

These are the frequently asked questions that seldom get answers. If you want to get a better appreciation of these answers, you can read the whole article (if you have not yet done that).

Becoming a good person, working harder, and being more health conscious are Filipinos’ top 3 New Year’s resolutions. Becoming a good person is the most common topic in students’ New Year’s Resolution Essays. Working harder is our solution to having a good life. And being more health conscious may mean eating fruits and vegetables, losing weight, or gaining weight.

New Year’s Resolutions fail because of procrastination, ningas kugon, lack of clarity, lack of commitment, lack of discipline, and lack of momentum. Unfortunately, these are the same reasons my many goals fail too. Declaring what you resolve to stop, start, and continue doing is not enough; you need to follow through. A resolution, by definition, is a vow to do what you want to do no matter what.

The Tagalog for New Year’s Resolution is Panata sa Bagong Taon. A panata is a vow. For Filipinos, a new year celebration represents a fresh start. We vow to work harder to enjoy abundant lives.

Many people have changed their lives because they stick to their New Year’s resolutions. They kept their eyes on their aspirations and stuck to them. Though most who made New Year’s Resolutions stop working on them after six weeks, the problem is not in the resolutions but in the resolution of the person to make them happen. The intention to make change happen is the first step, which is a significant step to making change happen.

New Year’s Resolution Essay (Example)

As I have said, when I was in school, we were required to write our New Year’s Resolution essays in 200 words. I typically write more than that.

One way to write an essay is by using CONTINUE, STOP, and START. It is a very simple format that you anyone can follow.

The Year 2023 is a promise of a fresh start and bouncing forward. The last two years have been difficult because I could not go out. I was afraid, physically and psychologically.

The pandemic scare is not yet over. New variants of the virus appear. But for most of us vaccinated, there is confidence that we can finally fight the unknown.

There are things I know that I can change. And there are things that I must continue doing. My New Year’s Resolution is a manifesto, a declaration of what I want to continue, stop, and start doing in 2023.

CONTINUE I will continue to improve my skills in public speaking. Though I have been speaking for many years and earning money from it, there are many things that I need to learn. Public speaking turned my life around. And though there are many other opportunities to grow my business, I will continue speaking to inspire people and grow my business.

STOP I will stop spending time on Facebook, debating political issues with strangers, diehard supporters, and trolls. As much as I wanted to educate people and share with them what I know as a student of politics, I was doing it wrong.

Debating with strangers will not help. Adding my voice to a thousand who do not want to listen to each other won’t add value. I am not a follower. I am not a watcher.

I am a leader. And my platform is on the stage. I speak to lead, not just to add my voice.

I will expand my network to bring my message to many people. I will speak in schools to share my message with students and educators. I will talk at associations, conferences, and in company assemblies.

I will share a message of hope in my team-building programs, leadership training, and public seminars.

I will start speaking to change the world.

Mission Possible 2023

Your mission is to write your own New Year’s Resolution. Keep in mind that it is not just a wish. It is a panata , a vow that you have to your future self.

I recommend that you make your resolution visual. Take it seriously. Convert it into a personal development plan. Execute it. Then, teach others how to do it well.

Short Essay: New Year Resolution

Writing a New Year’s resolution essay provides an excellent opportunity for self-reflection, goal-setting, and personal growth. As the calendar turns and a new year begins, many individuals embrace the tradition of making resolutions, which are promises or commitments to improve oneself or achieve specific goals. Crafting an essay about New Year’s resolutions allows us to delve deeper into our aspirations, motivations, and plans for the future. It prompts us to evaluate our past experiences, identify areas for improvement, and outline concrete steps towards personal development.

Table of Contents

New Year Resolution Essay Tips

Reflect on the past year: Begin by reflecting on the experiences, achievements, and challenges you encountered in the previous year. Consider what you learned, what you would like to improve, and what goals you want to set for the upcoming year.

Set specific and realistic goals: Choose resolutions that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART goals). Avoid vague or overly ambitious resolutions that may be difficult to achieve. Instead, focus on specific actions or behaviors that can be realistically implemented in your life.

Prioritize your resolutions: Identify the most important resolutions that align with your values, aspirations, and personal growth. It’s better to focus on a few meaningful goals rather than overwhelming yourself with an extensive list.

Provide context and personal anecdotes: Share personal stories or anecdotes that illustrate why each resolution is important to you. This will add depth and authenticity to your essay, allowing the reader to connect with your experiences and motivations.

Outline your action plan: For each resolution, outline the steps or strategies you plan to take to achieve it. Break down your goals into manageable tasks and establish a timeline or milestones to track your progress. This demonstrates your commitment and shows that you have thoughtfully considered the path to achieving your resolutions.

Discuss potential challenges and solutions: Acknowledge potential obstacles or challenges you may face while pursuing your resolutions. Address how you plan to overcome them and develop strategies to stay motivated and resilient in the face of setbacks.

Emphasize personal growth and self-reflection: Discuss how your resolutions contribute to your personal growth, well-being, and overall happiness. Reflect on the positive changes you anticipate in your life as a result of achieving these goals.

Be honest and authentic: Your essay should reflect your genuine aspirations and beliefs. Avoid writing what you think others want to hear and instead express your true intentions and values.

Edit and revise: Once you have written your essay, review it for clarity, coherence, and grammar. Edit out any unnecessary details or repetition, ensuring that your ideas flow logically.

Conclusion: Conclude your essay by summarizing your resolutions and reaffirming your commitment to achieving them. End on a positive note, expressing optimism and excitement for the new year.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #1

As the calendar turns and a new year dawns upon us, it is a time of reflection, renewal, and the opportunity for personal growth. New Year’s resolutions have long been a tradition, allowing individuals to set intentions and goals for the coming year. For me, this tradition is not just a fleeting promise but a chance to embark on a journey of self-improvement.

One of my resolutions for the upcoming year is to prioritize my physical and mental well-being. In the fast-paced world we live in, it is easy to neglect self-care amidst the demands of daily life. By making a conscious effort to exercise regularly, eat nutritious meals, and practice mindfulness, I aim to cultivate a healthier lifestyle. Taking care of my physical and mental health will not only enhance my overall well-being but also provide me with the energy and resilience necessary to tackle life’s challenges.

Another resolution I have is to expand my knowledge and broaden my horizons. Learning should be a lifelong endeavor, and I believe that continuous education is key to personal growth. Whether it’s through reading books, attending seminars, or taking up new hobbies, I aspire to constantly seek knowledge, explore diverse perspectives, and embrace new opportunities for intellectual development. By doing so, I hope to nurture my curiosity, deepen my understanding of the world, and become a more well-rounded individual.

Additionally, I resolve to foster stronger connections with loved ones and build meaningful relationships. In today’s digital age, it is easy to get caught up in a virtual world, often overlooking the importance of genuine human connection. I want to invest time and effort in nurturing my relationships, engaging in meaningful conversations, and creating lasting memories with family and friends. By being present and actively listening, I hope to strengthen the bonds that enrich my life and bring joy to those around me.

In conclusion, the start of a new year holds immense potential for growth and positive change. Through my resolutions to prioritize my well-being, expand my knowledge, and foster stronger connections, I am committed to embracing personal development and striving for a more fulfilling life. While resolutions may not always be easy to achieve, I am determined to approach them with dedication, perseverance, and a mindset open to learning from both successes and setbacks. As I embark on this journey of self-improvement, I am excited about the possibilities that the new year holds and the person I can become through embracing growth and positive change.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #2

As the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, a sense of possibility fills the air. It’s a time when we bid farewell to the old and eagerly embrace the new, armed with resolutions that promise personal growth and positive change. This year, I am determined to embark on a transformative journey through my New Year’s resolutions.

First and foremost, I resolve to cultivate a mindset of gratitude and positivity. In a world often defined by negativity and challenges, it is crucial to acknowledge and appreciate the blessings that surround us. Each day, I will strive to find something to be grateful for, whether it’s a simple pleasure or a significant achievement. By shifting my perspective to one of gratitude, I hope to nurture a positive outlook that permeates every aspect of my life.

Additionally, I am committed to prioritizing self-care and well-being. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to neglect our own needs. However, I believe that taking care of ourselves is not a luxury but a necessity. I will make a conscious effort to engage in activities that nourish my body, mind, and soul. This may include regular exercise, meditation, pursuing hobbies, or simply allowing myself time to rest and rejuvenate. By prioritizing self-care, I aim to create a solid foundation for overall well-being and resilience.

Furthermore, I aspire to embrace personal growth by stepping out of my comfort zone. Growth often occurs when we challenge ourselves and push beyond familiar boundaries. I will seek opportunities to learn and develop new skills, whether it’s taking on a new project at work, enrolling in a course, or engaging in meaningful conversations with people who possess different perspectives. By embracing discomfort and embracing the unknown, I believe I can unlock my full potential and continue evolving as an individual.

Lastly, I resolve to make a positive impact in the world around me. Small acts of kindness can create ripples of change that extend far beyond our immediate sphere. I will strive to contribute to my community through volunteering, supporting causes I care about, and spreading kindness wherever I go. By recognizing the power of my actions, no matter how small, I can be part of a collective effort to create a more compassionate and harmonious world.

In conclusion, New Year’s resolutions offer a pathway to personal transformation. Through cultivating gratitude, prioritizing self-care, embracing growth, and making a positive impact, I am committed to embarking on a journey of self-discovery and self-improvement. While the road may be challenging at times, I am determined to stay focused, resilient, and open to the opportunities that lie ahead. As the New Year unfolds, I am excited to see the person I can become and the positive changes I can bring to my own life and the world around me.

First and foremost, I resolve to achieve a healthier work-life balance. In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to become consumed by professional responsibilities, leaving little time for personal pursuits and relationships. I will set clear boundaries, carve out dedicated time for self-care, and strive to be fully present in my personal life. By nurturing a harmonious balance between work and leisure, I aim to enhance my overall well-being and cultivate stronger connections with loved ones.

Moreover, I am committed to practicing mindfulness in my daily life. Mindfulness is the art of being fully present and aware of the present moment, without judgment. I will incorporate mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and mindful eating into my routine. By cultivating a heightened sense of awareness and living in the present, I hope to reduce stress, increase focus, and find greater joy in the simple pleasures of life.

In addition, I resolve to prioritize self-reflection and personal growth. Regular self-reflection allows us to gain insights into our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, enabling us to make intentional choices. I will dedicate time for introspection, journaling, and setting personal goals. By embracing self-reflection, I can identify areas for improvement, celebrate achievements, and chart a course for personal growth and development.

Furthermore, I aspire to embrace sustainability and contribute to a healthier planet. I will adopt eco-friendly practices such as reducing waste, conserving energy, and supporting sustainable initiatives. By making conscious choices that minimize my ecological footprint, I can contribute to the preservation of our environment and inspire others to do the same.

Lastly, I resolve to foster a spirit of gratitude and kindness. Each day, I will make an effort to express gratitude for the blessings in my life and extend acts of kindness to others. Whether it’s through a simple smile, a heartfelt thank-you, or a charitable act, I believe that small gestures can have a profound impact on both the giver and the recipient.

In conclusion, my New Year’s resolutions revolve around embracing balance and mindfulness in all aspects of my life. By prioritizing work-life balance, practicing mindfulness, engaging in self-reflection, embracing sustainability, and fostering gratitude and kindness, I am committed to nurturing my well-being, personal growth, and contributing to a better world. As the New Year begins, I am excited to embark on this transformative journey, knowing that each step I take brings me closer to the balanced, mindful, and fulfilled life I aspire to lead.

My New Year Resolution Essay - 100, 200, 500 Words

People celebrate the beginning of a new year to give a fresh start to their lives. They take new year resolutions because everyone made mistakes in the previous year that they want to avoid in the future or to do something new in the next year. Resolutions assist us in staying focused on our choices.

When this year began, I resolved to focus on areas where I am weak or lack confidence. This covered my weak subject areas, my extreme engagement in watching web series, my inability to manage time for other activities etc. I made a timetable which I reviewed and modified every week, such that I accommodated all my activities and devoted adequate time to them. At the end of the year, I could feel positive results and felt proud of myself for sticking to my new year resolutions.

The New year reminds us that time is not permanent. It moves silently and stops for no one. A single goal or a list of goals one wants to accomplish or get rid of might form a new year's resolution. They give us a new chance to achieve something in our life, whether it is related to our personal life, professional life or academic life. For a resolution to work in our lives, we must be a person with strong determination.

Importance of Resolutions | New year resolutions are important for various reasons, some of them being:-

All activities that waste time and result in nothing are eliminated and replaced with new ones that never waste time and result in positive changes.

Someone who does not make any resolutions for the new year is similar to someone walking somewhere without knowing the way.

No matter how big or little a resolution is, it is important to consider its purpose and the results it will produce when put into practice in our daily lives.

My Resolutions | I have also made resolutions previously, but like everyone else, I break them. But this time, I will keep my resolutions and put more effort into changing myself. I made a list of resolutions that I plan to begin following next year. They consist of sticking to a set schedule for time management, avoiding junk food and putting a priority on healthy food for better health, and, most importantly, completing courses before exams.

A New year is not only about parties and celebrations or spending money lavishly, but it is also an excellent opportunity to start over and make changes in our life. Having a new year's resolution is a thing to be proud of and to share with others. It is what we promised to do at the end of the year. Making a new year's resolution is crucial because I need a goal or purpose to live.

Different People, Different Resolutions

Before moving forward, it is important to keep in mind that the changes must be fair and respectable. A resolution for the coming year is an idea that better defines and represents you. A new year's resolution is different for every person. Some may believe that resolutions work, while others may feel that they do nothing. A mature man will have the resolution to avoid bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol. For students, it may include exercising daily, going to bed early, eating healthy food etc. Having a new year resolution sounds as easy as ABC but applying it throughout the year is a big task as the world is full of distractions.

New Year’s Resolution Essay Writing (MADE EASY!) for Middle School

new years resolution essay ideas for middle school language arts

Happy New Year! The return from winter break in January offers the perfect backdrop to get students thinking about their academic and personal goals for the year. I love to take the time to challenge my students to think about their work so far and where they hope to be by the end of the school year. I like to begin the year with a New Year’s resolution essay writing unit where we work on goal-setting and resolve to do things that will help us to be an even better version of ourselves.

There are plenty of unique ways to teach essay writing, but I have found success with the BING BANG BONGO essay template. The concept is easy for students to understand. Here is an overview of the steps:

  • Identify your topic, and brainstorm the three main points or ideas you will use to craft your essay.
  • Introduction with a Topic Sentence . What is your piece about? What three pieces of information do you want to share with the reader based on the topic of your piece?
  • BING Paragraph 1 : What is the first idea you shared in your topic sentence? Your first sentence should introduce that first idea. Follow this with two or three supporting sentences, and close the paragraph with a concluding sentence.
  • BANG Paragraph 2 : What is the second idea you shared in your topic sentence? Two or three supporting sentences should follow the opening sentence in introducing that second idea. Close the paragraph with a concluding sentence.
  • BONGO Paragraph 3 : What is the third idea you shared in your topic sentence? Again, clearly state the third idea in your opening sentence and write two or three supporting sentences. Close the paragraph with a concluding sentence.
  • Conclusion: Concluding Sentence: Bring your piece to a close. Restate the purpose of the essay, but do not add any new information. Make sure you complete your thoughts so the reader walks away with a full understanding of your points.

If you are interested in a complete essay writing resource that is based on the BING, BANG, BONGO strategy, check out my New Year’s Resolution Essay Writing Toolkit , which can be used as a printable unit or integrated in Google Classroom.

New Year's Resolution Essay Writing Toolkit

To kick off the brainstorming process for this lesson plan, I start by discussing commercials students have noticed on TV. Typically, they will confirm they have seen lots of commercials for gym memberships and weight-loss companies. I ask them why they think these are so prominent during January, and they respond that people are often setting goals at the beginning of a new year.

From there, we create a brainstorm cloud where students list ways they could improve themselves. Some examples are: practicing harder, putting more effort into school work, listening more to a parent, being more responsible, etc. Depending on the suggestions you receive, it can also be helpful to explain the difference between setting a goal and achieving a dream.

Next, I have the students decide on the three goals they want to work on. Those get added to their brainstorm organizer, and we then move on to writing.

resolution brainstorm organizer

Next, we move on to creating our topic sentences. Sometimes it is best for teachers to share examples of their own topic sentences first, so students understand how to begin organizing their writing. I usually model my own resolutions in front of the class so we can go through the thought process together. My three goals for this project were: saving more money, being less quick-tempered, and saying only respectful things about others.

Once you establish topic sentences, show students how your BING paragraph (in my case) would be all about saving money, my BANG paragraph would be all about being less quick-tempered, and my BONGO paragraph would be all about saying only respectful things about others.

Students always LOVE to hear the stories behind my resolutions, and you’ll never face a shortage of suggestions to help you achieve your resolutions!

BING BANG BONGO essay writing paragraphs

In addition to having three strategies, I require each paragraph to include an opening sentence introducing the resolution and a concluding sentence bringing the paragraph to a close.

On the second day, I like to review our previous instructions and get to work on our introductions and conclusions. Some teachers may find this strategy backwards, but I have found it can be tricky for students to find a place to begin. With each of their body paragraphs completed, students have a better grasp of how they need to grab the reader’s attention and then bring the work to a close.

I often use the example of crime and drama shows when discussing the introductory paragraph. Often, the writers open the show with a shocking image or event to grab the audience’s attention and keep them glued to the show. This is the same type of statement we want to make with the first sentences in our resolution essay.

For the conclusions, I share how we are bringing the piece to a close and sending the reader on their way. This is NOT the time to share new information, but instead to give the reader the chance to reflect on what we have shared. At this point, the students will have completed their organizers and are ready for the first draft of their resolution essay.

As part of the review process, I typically have a writing conference with each student. The focus here is: mechanics-CUPS-capitalization, usage/grammar, punctuation, and spelling. We also discuss organization and the use of transitions in their sentences. Here is an example editing chart, which is included in the Resolution Essay Writing Toolkit from above.

CUPS Editing Chart - capitalization, usage/grammar, punctuation, and spelling

After all edits are in place, students rewrite their final drafts and publish them on their Chromebooks or display them in the classroom. Not everyone will be interested in sharing their resolutions, so choose which format makes the most sense for your group.

Essay writing is a skill that students can learn in the middle grades and will carry with them through college. Sadly, this wasn’t a skill I learned until high school, but with common core standards, writing extensive or elaborate pieces is now a requirement for our students at all levels, specifically in the middle grades.

For this reason, I created the Resolutions Made Easy writing resource. I wanted to help my students construct a thorough essay that required them to write 5-paragraphs effectively and successfully. It provides all the materials you need to walk students through the brainstorming, drafting, editing, and publishing stages.

new year's resolution essay 2023

It takes my students about five class periods to complete the entire process, depending on how quickly they are able to type their papers. It may take your students more or less time.

If you are looking for more writing activities and resources, be sure to check out my ELA resources for a variety of inexpensive, print-and-go ideas. If you are considering my essay writing toolkit, be sure to check out my January ELA Bundle which includes the writing toolkit and three additional units that you might like to try during this first month back from break. The New Year is the perfect time to refresh your classroom and experiment with new lesson formats to keep your students engaged.

new year's resolution essay 2023

Struggling to keep New Year's resolutions? Here's how to actually set doable ones for 2023.

When choosing something to promise, we tend to forget the resolution must be accompanied by a plan to do or not do something. It’s that simple.

Where did the tradition of making a New Year’s resolution come from?

It’s an ancient practice. And the celebrations that once went along with turning the old year into the new are not only ancient but often dangerous.

For instance, the Danes jumped off chairs to "leap" into the new year. In Spain, the frivolity involved eating 12 grapes at or before bedtime.

In contemporary times, some celebrate the new year by eating black-eyed peas, if you can stand them. We also drink bubbly and find someone to kiss as the clock strikes midnight.

Pace yourself. We have time.

Our holiday observances often include partying into the wee hours, a practice some law enforcement folks call amateur night on the roads.

This is because many people don’t know how to pace themselves. Sadly, we’ve all been there.

It’s not likely many celebrants will change their habits and play it safe with doable resolutions this New Year’s Eve.

Yet, we can try to get real in one aspect. It’s time for each of us to think long and hard when we set a New Year’s resolution.

The BEST 2023 Predictions: Musk kills Twitter, Kanye babbles, DeSantis labeled a toad

Year after year, many of us make a promise we can’t keep, even if we are clear-headed at decision time.

Realistically, how many of us can shed hundreds of pounds in a year? Is it likely we will successfully reinvent ourselves to become nicer or more gracious? Is it possible to turn over a new leaf and make measurable improvements in 365 days? Can anyone pay off all their credit cards and become free of debt in the new year?

Can you remember your 2022 resolutions?

We know this because it’s certain very few of us remember what we promised for 2022. I know I can’t recall any resolution I’ve made over the years.

How about if we each resolve to set doable resolutions for 2023, ones that can improve our lives and the lives of others? We might have a shot at success if we put more thought into creating the resolution.

What in the world will 2023 bring?: Our USA TODAY Opinion team has wishes – and fears.

Let’s start with some simple commitments. We can promise to clean out the garage regularly, learn a foreign language, delete hundreds of ridiculous cellphone photos, go out weekly with friends, plant a garden, rescue a shelter pet, wash Mom’s car once a month or clean out the refrigerator.

These resolutions might not sound all that impressive. But if we get real with our commitments, we will have something to celebrate.

Let's start small

After all these years of meaningless resolutions, I’m starting with the basics for 2023. I hereby commit to getting somewhat familiar with my own kitchen so I can try cooking, drink more water every day and consume less sugar and carbs.

Or these might be acceptable solid resolutions for me. Watch fewer YouTube videos; turn off the cellphone at funerals; keep researching my ancestry; make thrift shop purchases and stop buying new and shiny; quit moaning over the loss of the local Dillard’s store; purchase and read every book written by a friend or relative and be grateful for what I have. I basically must often stop to smell the roses.

At the end of next year, the success rate in making changes by setting believable resolutions can be impressive.

Ditch the pressure: Rethink your resolutions for the new year by making intentions instead

Oh, wait. It will be hard for me to smell the roses anytime soon since I killed two backyard rose bushes this past spring.

Guess I need to promise to move plant a garden higher up on the resolution list.

Happy new year!

This Year, Make a Resolution About Something Bigger Than Yourself

An illustration of people standing in rows, holding up and joining their arms in a repeating pattern that looks like many hearts.

By Roger Rosenblatt

The author, most recently, of “Cataract Blues: Running the Keyboard.”

New Year’s resolutions are penny-ante prayers. You are this way, but you hope to be that way. You used to want this, but now you want that.

The assumption behind resolutions is that something must be corrected and improved. One vows to be better than one was the year before.

Part of the nature of resolutions, particularly for those of us north of 60, has to do not only with the new year before us, but also with time already spent, or misspent.

We reflect on the years we’ve lived, on the past resolutions made and broken. Another New Year’s Eve come and gone. Every time the ball drops, the heart sinks. You are running out of time, and time is what we value most.

The historian-philosopher Lewis Mumford believed that the clock, not the steam engine, was the principal machine of the industrial age because time has a commanding relationship to the expenditure of human energy, and thus to any product itself. From the start, the essence of industry has been that things run on time. Time touches everything in life, even love. The fundamental things apply.

Thus there is always a melancholic desperation and urgency when we shout, “Happy New Year!” Will this new year, in fact, be any better than the last? We resolve that it will. We resolve to be fitter, healthier, cleverer, richer, more successful, more popular, more productive, better dressed, happier. And so restarts the whole vain, foolish, inevitably disappointing cycle.

The trouble with all such self-oriented promises is that they deal in chicken feed. What does the great wide world care if you lose weight, or work out, or work harder, or quit drinking or smoking?

Quit smoking or smoke three packs a day. Work out daily or let yourself go. It’s your choice, your life. Your little life. Meanwhile, the world — the whole tortured, self-destructive, polarized, endangered, extraordinary world — spins on.

What if, instead of planning our exercise regimens, we focused our intentions on all that is undesirable in human activity — wars, bigotry, brutality, the despoiling of the earth — and sought to address it? What if instead of making a milquetoast resolution, we made airtight commitments?

In “ Leaves of Grass ,” Walt Whitman writes: “This is what you shall do: Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to everyone who asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy.” He continues, “Re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem.’’

So there. If you’re looking for a worthwhile resolution, Whitman is not a bad place to start.

The task of improving the world may seem impossible, but it isn’t. All it takes is the proper sequence of correct discrete decisions. Decisions are just resolutions with teeth.

An editor of mine told me a story from his childhood on his grandparents’ farm in Iowa. The little boy, looking out over acres and acres of corn, asked his grandfather, “How are we going to shuck all that corn?” His grandfather said, “One row at a time.”

This, too, is how to improve the world. And we can start small.

Personally, I vow that I will frequently visit a children’s hospital and try to distract kids with stories, the funnier the better. I vow that I will phone every lonely person I know — and there are plenty — at least twice a week, just to chat and make them feel part of the living world. I vow to give alms to everyone who asks, and to those who don’t, and to stand up for the stupid and crazy, the stupider and crazier, the better. I promise to keep an eye out for strays (cats, dogs and people) and bring them safety and comfort. I vow to see every wrong as a menace, every wound an opportunity.

What will you do — right now, this week, this month — to make a better world? Stage a protest. Send a letter to right a wrong, or to proffer friendship. (A thoughtful, sympathetic letter to a friend in sorrow or distress is a powerful thing.) Lend a hand. Offer a word of comfort or inspiration or support or love. Donate money or, most valuable of all, time. There are so many ways to move this world, right within reach.

The great beautiful irony of all this, of course, is that selflessness is not the opposite of self-improvement. Selflessness is self-improvement — the most meaningful and lasting kind.

Practice it, and you may just find that the new year is, in fact, a step up from the last. You may find that, all at once, you look and feel better than you would have after any amount of dieting or exercise. Unburdened of ego. Lighter on your feet. Say, haven’t you lost weight?

Practice it, and suddenly you will find that your little life has gotten big. Big life, grand life is like art. It is not done well unless the artist dreams expansively, ridiculously, by making a glorious Whitman-size fool of herself in seeking to enhance everything, cure every ill. Nothing less.

At an event a couple of months ago, someone asked me why I wrote something the way I did, and I found myself blurting out, “To save the world.” It was laughable, preposterous and true.

New Year’s Resolutions for Writers (2023 Edition)

new years resolutions

The holiday cheer is peaking right now, and we at LivingWriter hope that everyone is having a blast with their vacation! After the year-long grind for your first drafts or final manuscripts or your month-long escapade with November’s NaNoWriMo , you deserve this break.

new years resolution celebrate

As the year comes to a close, we usually think of the new one that’s coming. What does 2023 have in store for you? What great things can you achieve for the next 12 months of your writing career?

To prepare for the next year, we have prepared 8 New Year’s resolutions for writers who are going into 2023 with hopes and promises of a better writing career.

2023 New Year’s Resolutions for Writers

Try a new genre.

You’ve spent 2022 wearing rose-colored glasses, writing the most beautiful romance between an artist and lawyer, or ex-convict and engineer, or singer and fan. Whichever pairing you thought up must have had everything work out for them (eventually). However, what if you switched gears for 2023?

You might be interested in exploring the idea of an artist becoming a lawyer, or an engineer/ex-convict clearing his name, or the real-life interactions of singers and their fans. Perhaps the third idea makes you shift from fiction to non-fiction entirely!

If you feel like you’ve emptied your baskets on your genre, maybe it’s time to shift into a new one. 2023 may be the year for you to see if you might also hit it big outside of your comfort zone.

Meet Other Authors

The writing community is a vibrant group of passionate writers, and you should be able to find patches of those people near you. Interacting with like-minded people is a great way to take a break from writing, or take inspiration from them.

new year's resolution writers group

Hang around local bookstores and other reading venues to meet people who share the same love for books and stories as you do, and share ideas about your next novel or simply socialize as people with common interests.

You will find experience and advice fresh from veterans in the field, or maybe you will get to impart your fair share of tips and tricks of the trade to a less-experienced bunch. Either arrangement benefits everyone at the end of the day, so make it one of your New Year’s resolutions to meet other writers like yourself.

Do Good Research

The common advice is to “write what you know,” and it’s a piece of perfectly harmless advice if you’re trying to will a story into existence. However, simply writing from memory and stock knowledge will not suffice for another year anymore. You have to improve upon your current well of knowledge and expand it.

Maybe you were able to wing your previous stories without much rigor, but research is a crucial part of the writing process. Even though you may be writing fiction, you cannot hope to write an internally consistent fictional world if you don’t inform your worldbuilding with accurate real-life knowledge.

Of course, the rigor required to do research may vary on your genre, but that’s not an excuse to skimp on it at all. Readers are vicious: they will know if you don’t do your research.

Read (Even More) Widely

‘Tis the age-old saying to read as much as you write. After all, how will you learn new things and understand new concepts if you don’t read? However, for 2023, you should one-up 2022.

new year's resolution reading

If you read 10 books in 2022, make it 15 in 2023. If you read 15, make it 20. Better yet, read one for each of the 52 weeks of 2023. Nothing else in the world makes a better writer than reading religiously.

Of course, you also need to make sure that you are reading productively. Take notes of certain styles and plot developments that you can study to improve upon your own.

Understand that You Will Write Badly

Our minds are not machines that can readily spit out amazing stories and words every time we ask of them. Most especially during the first draft of your manuscript, your mind will definitely screw up many times you’ll almost always hate the first draft.

However, at this point of the writing process, the most important thing is to get the story down. You don’t need it to be perfect the first time around, and we say that it shouldn’t be, anyway. Trying to make it perfect on the first draft is grueling, if not torturous. So much time is wasted on editing the story before it’s even finished. You will end up hating your story before you write the last paragraph.

If you internalize this 2023 that you can only produce masterpieces by iterating on your manuscript over and over, you will end up with a healthier and more productive writing process that has a better chance of getting a manuscript done and ready to be published.

Celebrate Progress as Much as Results

Tangent to the New Year’s resolutions above, you might often value the opinions of your readers. Of course, that’s not an inherently bad metric to use as a basis for your performance as a writer. However, not all your books and stories will be appreciated by everyone.

Thinking about the readers is important, and it is part of the writing process. However, as a writer, you shouldn’t place their opinions on a pedestal. The most important part of writing is the fact that you are writing down a story that you want to tell. That, in and of itself, is worthy of celebration as much as what others think of your stories.

Write, Even When You Want To

Even if you are a pantser , a professional writer does not just write when inspiration strikes. As one of the most important New Year’s resolutions for 2023, you should write, especially when you don’t want to. Writing is still work, and words don’t manifest themselves in your draft if you don’t put in the effort.

You need to understand that good writing is not the first one that you put down to words, but the one that you worked hard to become good. So write, even when you want to.

Use LivingWriter to Make Your Life Easier

Of course, we at LivingWriter hope that one of your New Year’s resolutions would include you trying out LivingWriter for 2023. We offer quite a lot of features: we have Outlines and Chapters, Plot Boards, Story Elements, Research Boards, templates… You get the idea: we have it all here, and we’re still growing!

nanowrimo livingwriter freeform grid

With our amazing array of features, we make sure that every writer who touches our platform has everything they’ll ever need and more. So that all you need to do is work and finish that manuscript.

Refill the Creative Well

As mentioned above, our inspiration will not always be there. However, you shouldn’t be like a sitting duck waiting for it to come back. Instead, you should also try to actively seek it out.

You can refill your creative well through a variety of ways, and most of them revolve around taking a break. Because, maybe, that’s what you also need. Resting is important, and it should be one of your New Year’s resolutions this year.

Spend the Next Year with LivingWriter

We hope that 2022 had been an amazing year for everyone. 12 months of writing stories, plotting character developments, and productively publishing novels for everyone to read. However, as life goes on, so do the years, and 2022 is now closing its curtains to open the doors and windows of opportunities for 2023.

Now that 2022 is well and gone, let’s welcome 2023 with the renewed vigor to write as many stories as we can, and write with more gusto than before!

New year's resolutions give you a sense of direction and purpose. By setting specific goals , you can focus your energy and effort on achieving them. This can help you feel more productive and fulfilled as you work towards something meaningful.

Keeps You Accountable

Setting new year's resolutions is an integral part of staying accountable to yourself. Committing to a specific goal and timeline makes you less likely to procrastinate or give up on it when the going gets tough.

Take Responsibility

New year's resolutions can help you take responsibility for your actions. You are no longer just living on autopilot but actively making choices about what you want to accomplish and then taking steps to achieve these goals.

Learn From Your Mistakes

New year's resolutions can help you learn from your mistakes. When you fail at reaching a goal, it is vital to take the time to reflect on what went wrong and then use this information as fuel for future success.

Meet New Challenges

One of the best things about making a new year's resolution is that it gives you a chance to try something new. This can be anything from learning a new language to finally taking that trip around the world you've been dreaming about.

Are New Year Resolutions Effective For Students?

A list of new year resolutions for students may include:

  • resolving to improve grades,
  • take on new challenges, or
  • develop new habits.

But are new year's resolutions effective in helping students reach their goals?

One common mistake students make with new year's resolutions is setting unrealistic or vague goals. For example, a student may resolve to "get better grades" without specifying what steps they will take to achieve this goal. This can lead to frustration and a lack of motivation when there is no progress.

Another mistake is not setting a clear timeline for achieving goals. You may have an excellent idea for a new year's resolution but quickly forget them when there is no plan for how and when you will achieve it.

To make your new year’s resolutions work this time, look out for these features:

Specific Goals

To make 2023 resolutions effective for students, it's essential to set realistic goals with clear steps for achieving them. This can help you stay motivated and on track to reach your goals. It's also helpful to have a support system, such as friends or teachers, who can provide encouragement and accountability.

Measurable Resolutions

Another feature of a compelling new year's resolution for students is to make it measurable. This can be as simple as setting a target grade. Or the number of extracurricular activities to participate in. By tracking progress, students can see their progress and stay motivated to continue working towards their goals.

Time-bound Resolutions

Another feature of a compelling new year resolution for students is to set a time limit. It's important to create deadlines for when specific actions are supposed to happen to avoid procrastination. For example, if your goal is to read more books this year, set aside specific times each week when you can do that activity.

Short-Term Goals

Setting small, realistic goals will help you achieve a larger resolution. For example, if you resolve to read more books this year, one short-term goal could be adding five minutes daily to reading time. Setting smaller goals helps students stay motivated and avoid being overwhelmed by the task.

Focus on Progress

You should be encouraged to focus on making progress toward your goals rather than comparing yourself against others or thinking about what could go wrong before it even happens.

13 New Year's Resolutions For Students In 2023 and How To Achieve Them

Now that you know what makes an effective new year resolution, it’s time to make one of your own.

Here are 13 specific New year resolutions for 2023 that can help you succeed as a student and some tips on how to achieve them:

1. Learn a new language

Being fluent in a second language can open up new opportunities in school and your future career. To achieve this resolution, consider enrolling in a language class or finding online resources to help you learn. Practice regularly, and try to immerse yourself in the language by listening to music or watching movies in the language you're learning.

2. Volunteer for a charity

Volunteering can be a rewarding experience and help build valuable skills such as teamwork and communication. Research l ocal charities and organizations that align with your interests and reach out to see how you can get involved.

3. Schedule time for exercise

Exercise is vital for physical and mental health and can help improve focus and concentration. Set aside a specific time each day or week to engage in physical activity, whether going for a walk, joining a sports team, or attending a fitness class.

4. Make flashcards for difficult material

Flashcards can be a helpful study tool, especially for memorizing subjects. Create flashcards for key terms, formulas, or concepts you need to learn. Use them to quiz yourself, and review them regularly to ensure you retain the information.

5. Create a schedule for class assignments

Managing your time effectively is crucial for success as a student. To achieve this resolution, create a schedule outlining when you will complete each class assignment, study for exams, or attend extracurricular activities. This will help you stay on track and avoid last-minute cramming.

6. Come to class prepared and ready to learn

Showing up to class prepared and engaged can help you get the most out of your education. Do your homework ahead of time, come to class with any necessary materials, and actively participate in discussions or activities.

7. Improve your social skills

Social skills can help you build relationships with your peers, teachers, and future employers. Start by practicing active listening, express your thoughts and ideas clearly, and be open to feedback and constructive criticism.

8. Improve time management skills

Students often struggle with managing their time and prioritizing tasks. Try setting a schedule or to-do list to improve your time management skills and stick to it. Use a planner or calendar to keep track of assignments, deadlines, and commitments. And don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

9. Learn to say no to distractions

Spending hours scrolling through social media or watching TV can be tempting in today's digital world. But these distractions can take away valuable study time and cause stress. To avoid distractions, set boundaries for yourself and limit your time on non-essential activities. And remember, it's okay to say no to things that don't align with your goals.

10. Spend time with family and friends

It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of school and forget to spend time with the people who matter most. Resolve to prioritize relationships and spend quality time with family and friends. This can help reduce stress, improve mental health, and provide support when you need it most.

11. Find a mentor or coach

A mentor or coach can provide valuable guidance and support for achieving your goals. Look for someone with experience in your field of study or personal interest and ask them if they would be willing to meet with you periodically to offer advice and support. This can help you stay motivated and on track to achieve your goals.

12. Crush your fear of public speaking

Many students dread speaking in front of a group, but public speaking is a valuable skill to have. To overcome your fear, start small by speaking in front of a small group of friends or classmates. Practice your presentation beforehand, and remember to breathe and speak slowly. With time and practice, you'll be able to speak confidently in front of any audience.

13. Reduce stress

High levels of stress can affect a student's mental and physical health, as well as their academic performance. Resolving to reduce stress can improve overall well-being and help students perform better in school. Practice relaxation techniques , such as meditation or deep breathing, and use a task management tool to stay organized and prioritize their time.

To Wrap it Up

Setting New Year's resolutions as a student can be a great way to improve in 2023. By focusing on specific goals, such as improving grades, increasing productivity, and developing new skills, you can take control of your future and set yourself up for success.

Sometimes, it may be hard to focus on goals when everything is competing for your attention. It's not unusual, but don't give up! Try using a task management assistant like Alleo.ai. This AI-powered tool can help students stay focused and organized by providing personalized reminders, prioritizing tasks, and tracking progress.

For example, Alleo.ai  can remind students to study for an upcoming exam, prioritize their workload based on deadlines, and track their grades over time. This can help you stay on top of your goals and make the most of your time.

My New Year's Resolution for 2023

For the past few days I have been trying to decide which of these two topics to begin learning first: databases or Kubernetes. I've grown a sudden interest in these topics because the companies that I want to work at had at least one of the above as a hard requirement - or sometimes both. Now, of course it's not the only reason why I'm interested in them. My interest goes beyond just fulfilling job requirements as they are both highly essential skills to have in any backend engineer's arsenal. But it was for sure the spark that ignited the interest/motivation in me.

While searching for learning resources and companies that are doing amazing things on these topics, I've come across a few talented people. One such personality is Kelsey Hightower. He's an extremely prolific speaker and also a highly decorated software engineer at Google. I've been watching his Talks on Youtube and also scrolling through his tweet history (because that's what I do when I find interesting personalities). One tweet in particular stood out to me

"What do you say to people who think you're a one trick pony?" I've been a one trick pony my whole career. At one point I was all in on Python and contributed to tools like pip and virtualenv. Then it was Puppet, then Go, then Kubernetes, and now Serverless. It's called focus. https://t.co/nU7YByRB4T — Kelsey Hightower (@kelseyhightower) November 30, 2022

"Focus" - that's interesting! But let's put that word aside for a second cuz I have a few more anecdotes to share.

I'm highly active on Reddit - especially on technology subreddits.

My 2022 Reddit Recap

I rarely engage though - maybe once in a blue moon. I'm just a lurker.

Anyway, there's this another highly skilled developer - Amos (@fasterthanlime) - who just hosted an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on reddit . I wanted to share one of the questions on that AMA, but unfortunately it was deleted. Nevertheless, the answer alone should suffice to convey what I'm trying to get across here.

"I'm very selective about what I spend my time on, ..."

It's not rocket science but rather a common knowledge but when you hear it from people you look up to - it really hits you. Advices are nice but I think they only bear weight if they come from someone you respect. (Btw, I'm not saying @fasterthanlime is my hero. Our view on the Go programming language differs radically.)

There are a few others who I've been following just as much

  • Thomas Ptacek (I came to learn about him through my job application at fly.io but turns out he's a highly decorated security engineer)
  • Fillipo (Just as old young as me and has already led the Go security team at Google!)

A sudden realization

If you notice one common thing among these guys - it's

They specialize in something and they're very frugal with their time.

I made a sudden realization that focus is something that I've been lacking more and more recently.

Oh look - an interesting blog post on Reddit about creating SVG with Javascript - let's read it! Shoot! I can barely understand what's going on. Meh, back to Reddit. Now what's this...? a reddit post on how 1Password's cryptography is more secure than Lastpass'. ...CLICK!!! I don't understand a single thing about any cryptography jargon that's in this post. I better scroll down to the comments. That might be interesting.

Why am I hopping through these posts reading about things that I have very little understanding of? Is that even "reading" because as soon as I stop understanding some of the jargon, I'll just try to skim through the post and quickly scroll down to read the comments. In the end, I mostly likely will end up without gaining any knowledge. And even if I do, I will forget about it because when will I ever use it?

On the flip side, I don't want to narrow down what I intake so much that I become a one trick pony. Diversity is important! But, the balance is even more important.

A look back at school

I have learned quite a few technologies in the past year but all of them in surface.

That's not how I learned things when I was at school! I used to sit down and grok on topics for hours to grasp things from the root. I used to love making notes - and in fact I was pretty good at it.

Where are all these good practices that I highly benefited from? I barely pickup pen & paper these days. I don't have any notes and I haven't learned anything in detail lately.

I think it's mainly because of focus. At school, I could stay focused on one thing because there were syllabuses! If I suddenly had a interest on something out of syllabus, I knew not to spend too much time on it because I had a syllabus to cover. The syllabus were a roadmap, an overseer to guide my focus. Oh, I wish there was a syllabus to go from Software engineer to a Staff Engineer - I would have aced it!

So here's my new year's resolution.

To maintain focus and balance in what I read.

Essay on New Year 22

Essay on New Year 2023 (1000+ Words)

The old year is ending, and a new beginning has arrived. People worldwide will be celebrating the arrival of the New Year. For some, the New Year means looking back at what has been accomplished, and for others, it means setting goals and making resolutions.

Some people believe that New Year’s Day is a time to reflect on all that has happened and to look forward to what is coming next.

One of the first things many people do in the new year is to make a list of resolutions. You might resolve to make more money, learn a second language, or become a better person. The most common resolution is to lose weight and get healthier.

However, it can be challenging to stick with these resolutions without support from family and friends. In this blog post, I will discuss some ways to help yourself and others as we enter into the New Year!

Essay on New Year

It’s the New Year! New Year traditions are generally based on old European pagan rituals. The idea of a ‘new year’ is thought to have come from the Roman practice of beginning the year at the first full moon after the winter solstice, or around January 1.

The New Year is a time for looking forward and making resolutions for your future. But it’s also a time to celebrate all that you’ve already accomplished in this past year. Reflect on what you’ve learned and share those lessons with others.

The start of a new year brings with it hope and anticipation. It’s the perfect time to start fresh by setting goals for yourself, reviewing your progress, and embarking on new adventures. Whether you want to make more money, improve your health, or explore the world in the coming year, there are endless possibilities out there waiting for you. But what are some resolutions that might be worth considering?

New Year Resolutions

Take the new year as an opportunity to get a fresh start. Letting go of a bad habit can improve your life immensely. A few simple changes can quickly improve your life.

Few things are worse than dealing with an upset stomach in the morning. Make an effort to eat healthy daily by adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet. It will not only make you feel better, but it can improve your performance at work.

Furthermore, meditation is a great way to reduce stress and improve your mental health. You can quickly get started by choosing a type of meditation suitable for you. Try a guided meditation that is designed specifically for you.

The Importance of Goals

Before embarking on a new adventure, it’s essential to reflect on what you’ve done and learned over the past year. You may be feeling that your life is stagnant and unsatisfying, but if you don’t look at how far you’ve come, how can you expect to go further?

The only way to grow as a person is to grow from your mistakes and learn from them. In the New Year, outline what you want to accomplish in the next 365 days. Write them down. Break them down into manageable tasks, and put them into a daily schedule.

Your life will begin to take shape in front of your eyes if you organize your life in a conducive way to your success. The same applies to your health.

Would you mind not following the joneses? It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparison.

The Importance of Planning

The moment we start procrastinating is the moment we begin to waste time. When was the last time you planned your week? Or what was the final task you completed?

In today’s fast-paced world, doing anything with a plan has become a lost art. But as with so many things in life, the moment you focus on the task at hand, not thinking about it, will be the key to success.

We all know that when we get things done, we feel better. Another vital resolution is to spend your time wisely. Many people believe that time is our most precious resource. But as someone once said, “you can’t get time back; you can only spend it.

Reviewing Your Progress

You’ve made so many mistakes in the past year, but have you ever thought about good things that happened? Sometimes we go through such hardship that we forget about the good things that come with it, so we need to take a step back and remember them.

Maybe it’s all of the amazing people you’ve met on your adventures. Perhaps it’s all the people who supported you or just congratulated you on reaching a big goal.

Maybe it’s getting a promotion at work that you were determined to make happen. You never know what amazing things are waiting for you, so reflect on what you’ve accomplished and focus on getting even more out of life.

Budgeting what many people fail to realize is that living well doesn’t just come naturally. Instead, it takes thought, preparation, and planning.

Exploring the World and Making Money

It is one of the top New Year’s resolutions for a reason. Who doesn’t want to travel the world, eat in a foreign restaurant, or experience something brand new and exciting every day?

When you choose to make money from your passion, the sky’s the limit. And you can do all of this even if you’re single and still living with your parents. Look into bartering, freelancing, selling stuff online, and even starting a blog that helps others make money from what they love.

Improving Your Health and Well-being

Don’t wait for the new year to improve your well-being. You can start now! Get moving, make some healthy choices, spend more time with friends and family, take walks outside, get a hobby—and give yourself a reason to be happy every day.

If you do decide to wait until January 1st, start by making a few small changes that can lead to some big improvements in your life.

We encourage you to have fun with your resolutions this year. If you have a good experience, you can try some more! After all, you don’t want to be one of those people who go to bed on December 31 and don’t resolve to do anything next year.

If you follow your resolutions , you should enjoy 2023. Have a great year!

New Year Resolution 2024 | Essays & Speeches with Quotes & Images for Children & Students

The list of life resolution is very long. The personal goals may vary like people may like to be happy, love themselves, gain or lose weight, get ore attention, stop pollution. Whereas,  in case of students or youth the personal goals would be like to study hard, more success, stop taking things for granted, stop pollution, love humanity, earn money, success, more positivity or focus on health.

1. Essay on My New Year Resolution 2023 For Students

We are humans with good and bad bundled together. Washing away unwanted habits from us and cultivating new and positive habits and disciplines as a part of life is necessary.Setting New Year Resolution is a good move to renew ourselves year after year.

What makes a perfect New Year Resolution? An idea that shapes and reflects you in a better way can be considered a New Year Resolution. As students, we should refine our thoughts, cultivate good habits and enhance our personality every year.

As it is widely believed that New year is a chance for many men to get rid of some old habits and bring positive and productive changes in their day to day lives. People from all walks of life set target and make resolutions in order to lead happy, content, peaceful and prosperous life.

Resolutions are often made to do away with bad and useless activities. All activities that let go time unproductive and yield into nothing are erased and replaced into new activities that never go in vain and bring productive changes. It’s very hard to avoid rampant activities that destroy our lives.

I am a student, to me time is the most precious thing. If I will kill time now, it will kill me tomorrow. My new year resolutions are enlisted below.

1) Earlier to bed and will rise early. 2) Get organized. 3) Learn something new. 4) Exercise regularly 5) Stop procrastinating 6) Try to be more assertive 7) Eat healthy foods 8) Enjoy every moment of life 9) Help others specially needy people 10) Reducing unproductive use of time.

In order to attain my above mentioned resolutions and goals I will bring many changes in my day to day. One of the biggest cause of procrastination is excessive use of social media specially Facebook, Whats App, Twitter etc. Apart from it I will limit the time I spend in front of the television.

Instead of watching television excessively I will try to find a sport that I like and play that game in order to keep myself fit and smart. A good student is known by his behavior and character. I will be respectful to my parents, teachers and elders because respecting and obeying elders is counted in good manners.

Good manners makes our personality. These changes will enhance my personality. My New Year resolutions will not only help me to eliminate my bad habits and adopt good habits but it will also make my future bright and make me successful at every junction of life.

2. Short Paragraph on New Year Resolution for Students

Every student often set resolutions on New Year. Basically a New Year resolution is made when one wants to correct the mistakes they have done the past year or do something in a more organized manner.

Students specially set their objectives regarding their studies and to brighten their future. A good student always learns lessons from the mistakes committed in the present or past year and on the eve of New year pledges to oneself to rectify all mistakes once did in the face of ocean of other activities.

A student often procrastinate studies and uses time carelessly and indulges in the wanton activities which adversely affect their studies. It is very necessary for a student to set the target every year and try every waking moment to get the desired and set target.

Every student must dream to do something productive because dreaming and materializing dreams is akin to success. I am also a student and being a student I have also made resolutions before, but just like anybody else, I too break it up. But this time I am going to stick to my resolutions and make sure that I change myself.

I have noted down a few resolutions that I would like to take this year and stick onto them. The most important of all is to be organized. I never have the habit of organizing my work and therefore end up in incomplete homework and projects.

So this year I plan to be more systematic and organized, so that I finish my work on time and do not keep pending, the works assigned to me.Secondly I would like to be a good reader.

I have heard that reading is a good habit, but I hardly take the time to read, even if I have time. So this time I have decided that I would spend some time in reading books that would improve my knowledge and interest in reading. Another area that I would like to improve myself is with the excess time spent on the internet.

Hours together I sit in front of the system, though I know it is just wasting my time unnecessarily. I have decided to cut down the time I use for surfing and make it more productive, rather than just visiting social networking sites and chatting.

Along with the internet, the other electronic item that has addicted me is the cell phone. I spent hours talking over the phone, not realizing the harmful effects it causes and waste my time and money. I have decided to cut it down and make good use of time.

This time, I am determined to stick to my resolutions and get myself corrected to be a more better student , both for myself, and my family and to the society.

3. Speech on New Year Resolutions for Students

My dear students as you know that every new year reminds us that time is not static, time passes silently, it never stops. As it is said that time and tide waits for none . Dear students wake up from sound slumber of procrastination and carelessness. You are the architect of the nation and you are the future of the world. On the occasion of New Year I will insist each and everyone of you to set new year resolutions.

Setting new year resolutions will revive and renew you into a better student. I have remained student and have came across through your phase of life. Time is the greatest weapon in your hands, if you will make good use of your time it will transmute you into gold.

It’s the very time that matters more than anything else in life, realization of the importance of time won’t strike your minds now because you are surrounded and indulged in many activities that sounds beneficial to you, actually these wanton activities of yours will not avail you in future.

Time is a healer and teacher, now or then it will teach you a lesson which neither any teacher nor any book would had taught you so far. So my dear students do not murder your time mercilessly, stop running behind all unnecessary things and get rid of all useless activities and equip yourself with the productive use of time.

Persistence and regularity at work is key to success. If you desire to be successful, value your time and be complete your tasks within stipulated time.

It’s very necessary for a student to set new year resolution because new year resolution is nothing but a way to improve and enhance oneself. Without a solid and sound resolution you won’t be able to accomplish your goals, shun all negative moves of your past and start a new journey with firm faith and determination, whatever you desire and aspire to attain will fall into your lapse.

In the end I will suggest you that this year instead of setting yourself for disappointment with vague goals, try setting structured and traceable smart goals . Your goals must be realistic, attainable, specific and achievable.

Ah, the paradox of time! As many craft their New Year’s resolution checklist for small businesses, it becomes evident how peculiar our perception of time truly is.

We often find ourselves ensnared within the vibrant embrace of festive celebrations, lights flickering, and the hum of holiday melodies. This makes it seemingly impossible to cast our thoughts towards the impending New Year.

It’s as if the present’s burstiness overshadows the future’s anticipations. Yet, paradoxically, amidst this very whirlwind of festivity, the crisp dawn of January 1 beckons, just a breath away.

This transitional juncture, tinged with the perplexity of endings and beginnings, offers a pristine moment, not just for personal introspection, but a deeper contemplation on the avenues and strategies to enhance and nurture your business ventures in 2024.

As the saying goes, “In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you.” And in that stillness, lies the potential for growth.

Wearing the dual hats of small business owner and solopreneur, I’ve journeyed through the maze of entrepreneurship, with its twists, turns, and hidden pitfalls. The struggle is real – how does one even carve out time to think about business expansion?

Some days, our minds and hands are tied, engrossed in the present demands, be it client requests or the never-ending flurry of emails.

Those grand aspirations, those visions of contributing profound thought leadership articles, of courting the dream client, become obscured, like stars lost in the city’s glare.

It’s a constant juggling act, a delicate balance where even a moment’s distraction can cause the entire structure to wobble. It’s in this chaos that I’ve discovered a valuable trick, learned through trial and error, successes and failures.

Managing the incessant “background noise” of day-to-day operations isn’t just about perseverance; it’s about smart strategy.

Leveraging free or low-cost apps and services has been a game-changer, a method to filter the din and focus on what truly matters.

This approach doesn’t just bring clarity; it breeds efficiency, enabling you to steer your ship through the storm with greater control, navigating towards your goals with precision and intent.

This year, resolve to minimize stress and make your life that much easier. Get started with this handy New Year’s Resolutions checklist for small businesses:

Resolution #1: Do More with Social Media

Have a Facebook account but rarely use it? Wish you had time to actually respond to  customer tweets  or finally get your Instagram up and running?

Take the pain out of social media management with Hootsuite Pro. Designed specifically for small and medium-sized businesses, Hootsuite Pro is packed with intuitive features that make it simple to manage, engage and measure your social media activity without losing a huge chunk of your day to the Twittersphere.

  • Problem : Limited social media engagement despite having accounts.
  • Solution : Hootsuite Pro – A platform for easy management and effective social media engagement tailored for small and medium businesses.

Your to-do:  Getting active on multiple social media channels at once can be overwhelming. Start by focusing your attention on one network. Sign up for Hootsuite’s free, 30-day trial.

Use the service to schedule your posts in advance and hone in on relevant conversations about your brand.

Analyze campaign performance: which posts resulted in the most follower engagement? How can you use this feedback to strengthen your social media activity?

  • Focus on one social media network initially.
  • Sign up for Hootsuite’s free, 30-day trial.
  • Schedule posts and monitor brand-related discussions.
  • Review and adapt based on the engagement metrics.

Resolution #2: Stop Wasting Time and Money on Ad Hoc Accounting

This is a big one, folks. Do you find yourself scrambling for receipts come tax time? Are you still manually tracking expenses in a Google doc or Excel chart?

Do you promise every year to finally get a better system in place but never seem to get around to hiring an accountant?

Put an end to the bookkeeping madness with affordable (or free!) accounting solutions. Both Wave and  Freshbooks  are simple and intuitive to use with thousands of satisfied small business customers.

  • Problem : Inefficient and outdated accounting methods.
  • Solution : Use modern accounting software like Wave and Freshbooks.

Your to-do:  Get started with either Wave or Freshbooks (I’m a fan of both). These cloud-based accounting solutions are built specifically to make life easier for small business owners, helping us stay organized and get paid.

Track time, log expenses, send automatic client invoices, and more. Plus, both Wave and Freshbooks offer credit card processing for even faster payment.

  • Pick Wave or Freshbooks to handle your accounting.
  • Use the software for tasks like tracking time, logging expenses, and auto-invoicing clients.
  • Integrate credit card processing for swift payments.

Resolution #3: Get a Leg Up on the Competition with Continuing Education

Continuing education  is a must for small business owners, but unless there’s a certification renewal required for our jobs, most of us put these classes off on the back burner.

The result: from accounting to marketing, we keep doing things the same way we always have– oftentimes missing out on better, easier solutions.

From public speaking to grant writing, make this the year you conquer a professional fear, learn a new skill, and grow your professional network while doing so.

  • Problem : Neglecting the value of ongoing education.
  • Solution : Engage in continued education to enhance skills.

Your to-do:  What skill would you most like to improve? What is your weakest spot as a small business owner? Maybe you’d like to brush up on your accounting basics, take an industry mastery class, or finally master the basics of online marketing.

Start by committing to learn one new skill. Sign up for a class at a local community college or enroll in an online training course. Challenge friends or colleagues to expand their skillset by taking the class with you. It’s great to have an accountability partner!

  • Identify a skill or area you wish to develop or strengthen.
  • Enroll in a local class or an online course.
  • Collaborate with peers or colleagues for mutual accountability in learning.

Resolution #4: Put an End to Project Collaboration Woes

When your small business team of freelancers and telecommuters is spread out over several time zones (and not several cubicles), minor project miscommunications can snowball into major problems, throwing the entire team off track.

This year, resolve to get everyone on the same page from day one with an easy-to-use project collaboration platform. Two of my personal favorites are  Wrike  and  Trello , both of which make the on-boarding process a piece of cake.

  • Problem : Challenges in coordinating with a dispersed team.
  • Solution : Project collaboration platforms like Wrike and Trello.

Your to-do:  Get the whole team set up from the beginning of January to use your preferred project management app. Set priorities and monitor your team’s progress.

Review and approve completed tasks and assign new ones. Use the real-time workspace for document sharing and dynamic collaboration.

Stay on track with a birds-eye-view of your team’s workload and deadlines, so you know weeks out (rather than hours out) if a delay will affect an on-time and on-budget project completion.

Happier clients  and  happier team members make for a much more enjoyable work environment.

  • Onboard your team to a chosen project management tool at the start of 2024.
  • Assign tasks, monitor progress, and facilitate document sharing.
  • Utilize the platform’s overview features to foresee potential delays and ensure project timelines are met.

adp national employment report February 2023

I really lovin… Get a Leg Up on the Competition with Continuing Education. There is definitely a few areas I need to sharpen up on. Thanks for helping me with my 2016 resolutions!

Have a good one 🙂

Brian: I will start building my email list for a newsletter that I will roll out during 2016.

Martin, if you are already on LinkedIn, you already have a list. You have an email list for all of your 1st level connections. You just need to export it and find the right CRM to use this database effectively. Then you can build on it within LinkedIn by finding more connections there. Rinse and repeat, and you will quickly have a valuable and substantial list for your newsletter.

Thanks for the tip!

All the Best,

Excellent checklist helps small businesses to identify some of the tasks critical to resolving the company practice. If you consistently engage these tasks, you will be in a better position to manage and grow your business. Further, usually conducting these activities will reduce the pressure you may face at the end of the year.

I guess what many people including small business owners have is maintaining their new year resolution. This will be my challenge.

Yuca’s got Infusionsoft last year. I’m going to focus on using it to its full potential in 2016. Thanks for the thought-provoking article.

New year, new me? Ditch New Year's resolutions. Adopt habits instead.

New year, new me? Ditch New Year's resolutions. Adopt habits instead.

"New year, new me!"

Well, not so much, it turns out.

The most common New Year's resolutions include eat healthier, lose weight, exercise more, save more money, read more, spend more time with family and friends, and learn new skills or adopt new hobbies. But statistics indicate that fewer than 10% of people keep their resolutions for a myriad of reasons, including making too many, not tracking their progress, or forgetting about them.

This year, instead of resolutions, try forming new habits.

Resolutions are vague, result-focused goals, which is why they almost always fail. Habits, on the other hand, are specific, ritual-oriented, and identity-forming, developing helpful systems that empower you to keep your habits and grow.

In his book "Atomic Habits," author James Clear writes, "Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity."

If you want, for example, to become someone who spends more time with friends and family while spending less time in front of screens, remove screens from your environment. Create "friction points" between you and your screens. Put your TV in a different room. Keep your smartphone out of your bedroom. Delete social media apps from your phone.

Take on the identity of someone who controls his own technology — not someone who is controlled by it.

It is important to remember that our bad habits — those we want to ditch in the new year! — did not form overnight. We cannot, therefore, expect our new habits to "stick" faster than our bad ones.

Instead, set small but daily expectations of improvement. You're not going to become a runner overnight or someone whose dietary preferences are healthy foods over sugary ones. Instead, aim for 1% improvement daily.

"All big things come from small beginnings. The seed of every habit is a single, tiny decision. But as that decision is repeated, a habit sprouts and grows stronger. Roots entrench themselves and branches grow. The task of breaking a bad habit is like uprooting a powerful oak within us. And the task of building a good habit is like cultivating a delicate flower one day at a time," Clear explains in his book.

Remember: Daily effort of 1% improvement will result in drastic transformation over the course of one year.

"Build the behavior first. Worry about the results later," Clear advises .

You can do it.

Global CO 2 emissions for 2023 increased by only 0.1% relative to 2022 (following increases of 5.4% and 1.9% in 2021 and 2022, respectively), reaching 35.8 Gt CO 2 . These 2023 emissions consumed 10–66.7% of the remaining carbon budget to limit warming to 1.5°C, suggesting permissible emissions could be depleted within 0.5–6 years (67% likelihood).

Data from the Carbon Monitor indicate 35.8 Gt CO 2 were emitted globally in 2023.

Although the trend is upwards, the pace of growth has been slowing, suggesting global emissions might have plateaued.

India overtook the EU as the third highest emitter globally.

You have full access to this article via your institution.

Annual global CO 2 emissions dropped markedly in 2020 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, decreasing by 5.8% relative to 2019 (ref. 1 ). There were hopes that green economic stimulus packages during the COVD crisis might mark the beginning of a longer-term decrease in global emissions toward net-zero emissions, but instead emissions rebounded and quickly exceeded pre-pandemic levels by 2021. However, year-on-year growth has slowed, with 5.4% increases in 2021 (ref. 2 ) (reaching 35.1 Gt CO 2 ) and 1.9% increases in 2022 (ref. 3 ) (reaching 35.7 Gt CO 2 ), rapidly using up the remaining carbon budget. Here, we outline global CO 2 emissions (encompassing fossil fuel combustion and cement production) from the Carbon Monitor project ( https://carbonmonitor.org ) for the year 2023.

Global CO 2 emissions in 2023

Overall, global CO 2 emissions in 2023 reached 35.8 ± 0.3 Gt CO 2 , an all-time high (Fig.  1 ). Total emissions were 35.3, 33.3, 35.1 and 35.7 in 2019–2022, meaning year-on-year changes of –5.8% from 2019 to 2020, 5.4% from 2020 to 2021, 1.9% from 2021 to 2022 and 0.1% from 2022 to 2023. This slight increase of 0.1% (–0.6 to + 1.1%) from 2022 to 2023 is less than the 1.1 ± 1.0% increase forecast by the Global Carbon Project (GCP) 4 . Although difficult to predict, the continued deceleration in growth rates might signal a plateauing or peaking of global CO 2 emissions in 2023, as has been suggested by the International Energy Agency (IEA) 5 . The trajectory of emissions in 2024 will offer further evidence.

figure 1

Historical CO 2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion and the process of cement production (‘Fossil CO 2 ’) 8 coloured by industry sector, and those with land-use change (LUC) emissions 4 (‘Fossil + LUC’). International bunkers describe emissions from international aviation and international shipping. The inset displays daily near-real-time CO 2 emissions since 2019 from the Carbon Monitor 1 initiative and year-on-year percent changes. Note that total emissions and percent changes have been revised slightly from earlier estimates 2 , 3 owing to revised data and updated methodologies 9 , 10 . Global CO 2 emissions continued to grow after a brief decline in 2020, but the rate of that growth slowed in 2023; if these progressions continue, the remaining 1.5 °C carbon budget could be used within 0.5–6 years.

The sectoral contributions to these emissions are broadly similar to previous years. The power sector accounted for 38.4% of global CO 2 emissions, industry for 29.0%, ground transportation for 18.6%, residential for 9.4%, international bunkers (international aviation and shipping) for 3.5%, and domestic aviation for 1.0%. Moreover, the pattern of decelerating growth of 2023 global emissions is also evident at the sectoral level. For instance, year-on-year changes in power sector emissions went from + 0.9% in 2022 to –0.2% in 2023, industry emissions from + 1.6% to –0.8%, residential emissions from + 0.9% to –5.5%, and international bunkers from + 18.1% to + 8.9%. However, there were exceptions: ground transportation growth increased from + 2.5% in 2022 to + 3.1% in 2023, while domestic aviation rebounded from –1.0% in 2022 to + 14.0% in 2023. Nevertheless, both domestic and international aviation remain below pre-pandemic levels (2023 emissions were –1.9% and –9.6% less than 2019, respectively).

At the country level, combined emissions from the top five emitters remain similar to previous years. In descending order, China, the United States, India, the European Union (excluding the UK), and Russia collectively accounted for 64% of global emissions, or 23.0 Gt CO 2 . However, interannual fluctuations are apparent when comparing 2022 and 2023, making it difficult to predict long time trends toward zero emissions. For instance, emissions from China (the largest emitter) decreased by 1.9% to 11.0 Gt CO 2 in 2022 but rebounded + 2.9% to 11.3 Gt CO 2 in 2023. By contrast, other regions have maintained earlier increases. Emissions from India, for example, surged by 6.9% to 2.6 Gt CO 2 in 2022 and by another 4.4% to 2.8 Gt CO 2 in 2023; in doing so, India surpassed the EU to become the third highest emitter. Russia exhibited a similar increase, whereby emissions increased by 1.0% to 1.5 Gt CO 2 in 2022 and grew by 2.4% to 1.6 Gt CO 2 in 2023. Meanwhile, emissions began to decrease in other regions. In the United States, emissions increased by 3.0% to 5.0 Gt CO 2 in 2022 but decreased by 2.4% to 4.9 Gt CO 2 in 2023. Similarly, the European Union’s emissions increased by 0.3% to 2.8 Gt CO 2 in 2022 but decreased by 6.2% to 2.6 Gt CO 2 in 2023.

Carbon budget countdown

Global CO 2 emissions are rapidly depleting reported carbon budgets — that is, the amount of carbon that can be released while limiting anthropogenic warming to 1.5 °C and 2 °C above pre-industrial temperatures, as outlined by the Paris Agreement. At 67% likelihood, the IPCC set this budget (starting from 2020 and assuming no overshoot) at 400 Gt CO 2 for 1.5 °C warming 6 . The years 2020, 2021 and 2022 depleted the budget by 9.4% (38 Gt CO 2 ), 9.9% (39 Gt CO 2 ) and 10.0% (40 Gt CO 2 ), respectively, with 2023 emissions using a further 10% (40 Gt CO 2 ). A total of 243 Gt CO 2 remain, which could be exhausted within 6.1 years unless emissions fall sharply. At 83% likelihood, the post-2020 budget to avoid 1.5 °C is only 300 Gt CO 2 . In this case, 2023 emissions depleted 13.3% of the budget, with the remaining 143 Gt CO 2 potentially exhausted within 3.6 years. The carbon budgets for 2 °C warming are larger. At 67% likelihood, the 2°C budget is 1,150 Gt CO 2 , 3.5% of which was used in 2023; the remaining 993 Gt CO 2 could be exhausted within 24.8 years unless growth rates fall. At 83% likelihood, the 2 °C budget is 900 Gt CO 2 , 4.4% of which was used in 2023; 743 Gt CO 2 remains that could be used within 18.6 years.

Other estimates of the remaining carbon budget imply much lower permissible emissions 7 . Under those tighter constraints, only 250 Gt CO 2 or 60 Gt CO 2 remain from January 2023 to achieve the 1.5 °C target at 50% and 66% likelihood, respectively. Accordingly, they convey a more dire timeline. Focusing on the 66% scenario to facilitate comparison with the IPCC likelihoods above, 2023 emissions used 66.7% of the budget, leaving only 20 GtCO 2 ; at the current pace, the entire 1.5 °C target could be depleted halfway through 2024. By comparison, 1,200 Gt CO 2 or 940 Gt CO 2 remains to constrain warming to 2 °C at 50% and 66% likelihood, respectively. For the 66% scenario, 2023 emissions used 4.2% of the budget, leaving 900 Gt CO 2 , which could be diminished within 22.6 years.

Detailed and near-real-time monitoring of CO 2 emissions since 2019 has enabled timely insights into changes in CO 2 emissions worldwide. In 2023, global annual emissions reached an all-time high of 35.8 Gt CO 2 , which reflects a very slight increase of 0.1% year-on-year. While these estimates indicate that post-pandemic emissions growth is slowing, there is not yet convincing evidence of a peak in global emissions — CO 2 emissions continue to rise, particularly in China, India and Russia. Given dwindling carbon budgets to constrain warming to 1.5 °C — the threshold above which climate impacts will become even more disastrous — the absence of a clear downward trend in emissions is troubling. The window of opportunity to meet the most ambitious international climate goals is rapidly closing. Meeting such goals would entail nations accelerating their decarbonization efforts and embracing the consensus from COP28 to “transition away from all fossil fuels in energy systems” as quickly as possible. This call to action is particularly pressing for countries with energy systems heavily reliant on coal, like China, India and Russia, where power generation accounts for approximately half of national carbon emissions. Transitioning these countries’ power sectors away from coal is critical for international climate mitigation efforts. Continued monitoring of global and national carbon emissions could be instrumental in evaluating the efficacy of these efforts.

MOSCOW (AP) — Heavy snowfall has hit the Russian capital, disrupting traffic on roads and flights in and out of three Moscow airports, officials and media reported on Monday.

The snowfall that began Sunday and continued overnight has brought an additional 23 centimeters (nine inches) to already high levels of snow in Moscow, according to deputy mayor Pyotr Biryukov. About 135,000 people and 18,000 pieces of equipment were involved in the snow-clearing effort.

Nearly 200 trucks got stuck in the snow over the past 24 hours, and required assistance from road traffic workers, the Moscow transport department reported.

A total of 53 flights were delayed and five more were canceled on Monday morning in three out of four Moscow airports, Russian business daily Vedomosti reported. Most of the delays occurred at the Sheremetyevo airport north of the capital. The two airports to the south, Domodedovo and Vnukovo, also experienced delays, the report said. At the Zhukovsky airport southeast of the city, flights were departing from Moscow on schedule, according to Vedomosti.

Heavy snow, as well as temperatures below -50 C (-58 F), were also reported in the Siberian region of Yakutia. In the neighboring region of Magadan, similar temperatures were expected in the coming days.

What customers should know about AT&T's massive data breach

By Khristopher J. Brooks

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

Updated on: April 11, 2024 / 3:23 PM EDT / CBS News

Millions of current and former AT&T customers learned over the weekend that hackers have likely stolen their personal information and are sharing it on the dark web .

AT&T on Saturday said it doesn't know if the massive data breach "originated from AT&T or one of its vendors," but that it has "launched a robust investigation" into what caused the incident. The data breach is the latest cyberattack AT&T has experienced since a leak in January of 2023 , that affected 9 million users. By contrast, Saturday's much larger breach impacts 73 million current and former AT&T account holders. AT&T has seen several data breaches  over  the years that range in size and impact.

The data breach prompted an Ohio man to file a class-action lawsuit against AT&T, accusing the telecommunications giant of negligence and breach of contract. Lawyers representing Alex Petroski of Summit County, Ohio, argued that the cyberattack could have been avoided and that AT&T's security failed to protect customer data.

Until more details of AT&T's investigation arise, here's what customers should know about the most recent data breach.

How many people were impacted by the AT&T data breach?

AT&T said the breach on Saturday affects about 7.6 million current and 65.4 million former AT&T customers.

What type of information was taken from AT&T?

AT&T said Saturday that a dataset found on the  dark web contains information such as Social Security and passcodes. Unlike passwords, passcodes are numerical PINS that are typically four-digits long. Full names, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth and AT&T account numbers may have also been compromised, the company said. The impacted data is from 2019 or earlier and does not appear to include financial information or call history, it added.

Was my information affected by the AT&T data breach?

Consumers impacted by this breach should be receiving an email or letter directly from AT&T about the incident. The email notices began going out on Saturday, an AT&T spokesperson  confirmed .

What has AT&T done so far to help customers?

Beyond notifying customers, AT&T said that it had already reset the passcodes of current users. The company also said it would pay for credit-monitoring services where applicable.

What's the latest with AT&T's investigation into the breach?

AT&T hasn't disclosed details about its investigation into the data breach, but it is likely to be time-consuming and costly, according to Kevin Powers, the founding director of the Master of Science in Cybersecurity Policy and Governance Programs at Boston College.

The company will most likely bring in outside computer forensics specialists who will work with its on-site IT staff to determine exactly when and how the hackers got into the customer account information system, Powers said. But identifying the hackers' path of entry will be a big challenge for such a large company.

"You don't know where it came in from," Powers told CBS MoneyWatch, referring to the source of the breach. "It potentially could be from a customer or it could have been done from one of their outside contractors or someone else along their supply chain."

In addition, AT&T will have to scrub any malware out of the software that runs its customer account system, while also keeping the system running for customers who weren't impacted, he said. All these steps will have to be shared with lawyers, the outside consultants, and likely officials from the Federal Trade Commission.

What's the best way to protect my personal information?

Start by freezing your credit reports at all three major agencies — Equifax, Experience and TransUnion. Then sign up for 24-7 credit monitoring and enable two-factor authentication on your AT&T account, said WalletHub CEO Odysseas Papadimitriou, a former senior director at Capital One.

If you receive a notice about a breach, it's a good idea to change your password and monitor your account activity for any suspicious transactions. The Federal Trade Commission offers free credit freezes and fraud alerts that consumers can set up to help protect themselves from identity theft and other malicious activity.

Biden announces new plans to provide student debt relief for millions

President Joe Biden on Monday announced revised plans to cancel federal student debt that along with other actions would benefit millions during a visit to Madison, Wisconsin.

Biden’s new plans are aimed at canceling runaway interest for millions of borrowers; nullifying debt for those who are eligible for but not yet participating in certain forgiveness programs, such as those in public service who've been paying off their loans for 10 years or more; borrowers of undergraduate or graduate loans who started paying off loans at least 20 or 25 years ago, respectively; borrowers enrolled in low financial value programs; and those experiencing hardships that prevent them from making loan payments.

Student loan borrowers rally outside the Supreme Court in Washington

"This relief can be life-changing," Biden said in remarks in Wisconsin. "Folks, I will never stop to deliver student debt relief on hard-working Americans, and it's only in the interest of America that we do it. And again, it's for the good of our economy that's growing stronger and stronger — and it is. By freeing millions of Americans from this crushing debt ... it means they can finally get on with their lives, instead of their lives being put on hold."The administration’s new plans, in combination with previous actions it has taken, would provide student debt relief to more than 30 million Americans, the White House said. The administration's actions, taken together, will eliminate accrued interest for 23 million borrowers, cancel the full amount of student debt for more than 4 million borrowers, and provide at least $5,000 in debt relief to more than 10 million others.

The new plans are the administration’s latest efforts to provide relief to borrowers of federal student loans after the Supreme Court struck down Biden’s original plan to cancel up to $20,000 in debt for about 43 million eligible borrowers.

Biden acknowledged the high court's ruling and the opposition from Republicans in his remarks Monday, saying they forced his administration "to find alternative paths to reduce student debt."

The new plans are also part of the administration's efforts to address the disproportionate burden of student debt that Black, Latino and other borrowers from vulnerable communities face.

Vice President Kamala Harris was traveling to Philadelphia, second gentleman Doug Emhoff to Phoenix and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona to New York City to highlight the administration's new plans and meet with borrowers who have benefited from the actions it has taken on student debt relief.During a press call Sunday, Cardona said the revised plans for student debt relief are the result of a new rule-making process designed to provide borrowers with relief under the Higher Education Act.

“And what does that really mean for people? It means breathing room. It means freedom from feeling like your student loan bills compete with basic needs like grocery or health care,” he said.

"Now there’s an end to the nightmare of working hard, making loan payments, and still watching your loan balances get bigger and bigger, month after month," he said.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., praised the administration’s new actions in a statement, saying that it shows Biden is “heeding Congress’ call” to provide as much student debt relief as possible.

“After the MAGA Supreme Court struck down the most far-reaching student loan debt forgiveness last year and ripped away a financial lifeline from those who need it most, this new action by President Biden shows Democrats are committed fixing the Federal student loan program so that higher education can finally be a ticket to the middle class for everyone,” he said.
