The Inclusive Homework Club was founded in 2018 to create an educational support hub for people with learning difficulties and from disadvantaged backgrounds in mind. Since then, the impact of the IHC has continued to grow and officially received charity status on the 22nd of June 2020. The Club is currently being ran by Firdaus Ahmed and is funded by BEMIS, the Endrick Trust and the St. Nicholas Care Fund.
We work with teachers at primary and secondary schools in Glasgow. Teachers refer young people to our Inclusive Homework Club programme to receive extra support. Parents and carers can also contact us directly if they feel their child would benefit from additional help.
Our team of volunteer tutors provide literacy and numeracy support to students in one-to-one and group sessions. The support not only helps children succeed academically, it also helps them to build confidence and reach their potential. It's heartwarming to see the smiles on children and young people's faces as their confidence grows.
Educational support from school and at home is often not enough, especially for children that require additional support. Our mission is to tackle barriers to learning and ensure every child receives the individualized learning support they need to reach their full potential.
We dream of a world where every child gets the same educational opportunities.

Meet the Inclusive Homework Club
Posted on February 7, 2023 | Category : Communities Stories
We visited the inclusive homework club, one of the projects funded by the reaching new scots fund..
Their ESOL and IT Skills projects are supporting adults to pursue further education, improve their employment prospects and even enable them to support their children with their homework. Glasgow Clyde College provides qualified lecturers to lead the courses.
The project grew out of discussions between Inclusive Homework Club (IHWC), parents in the community, and other local organisations such as CWIN .
When we visited, we first met with Firdaus, founder of IHWC, and Project Coordinator Carly to hear all about how the project is going. They talked about how there are not enough English language classes for the demand in Glasgow, and shared the positive impacts the project is having on their participants.
We also heard about some of the barriers people face when attending classes. These included travel and childcare costs, mismatched skill levels, or unsuitable timings (particularly for parents who need to pick up kids from school).
IHWC are now adapting to the needs of their community – adding new skill levels, adapting their timings, and ensuring that travel costs are factored into their budget moving forward.
Nufailah’s story
Nufailah came to the UK 12 years ago and has 4 children, 3 of whom participate in our after-school Homework Club. She often comes with her children and enjoys the learning environment both for her children’s sake and her own. It is because of her children that she was inspired to register for the Click2Connect course. Her children frequently need to use a computer to complete their homework, and she had difficulty helping them because she had not used a computer at all since she came to the UK. Her son, who is in P7, would ask for help, and she says that she ‘didn’t know [how to help] so [she] need[s] to learn’. Nufailah reported a high level of enjoyment in the course and how it has changed her life. The lecturer was very helpful and she is happy that she can now have an email address and send emails, allowing her to be in better contact with friends and family back home. She is also very confident now in helping her children with their schoolwork at home. In addition to this, Nufailah also feels more confident in her ability to apply to jobs, especially now that she can put on her CV that she has completed an SCQF level 3 computer skills course and fill out online applications. College pursuits are on the horizon for Nufailah. She has indicated interest in taking the next level Click2Connect class, and even applying for college in the future. As a testament to her increased skills and confidence on the computer, Nufailah has agreed to volunteer as an assistant on the computer skills classes that are put on after her course finishes.
In the classroom
After chatting with Firdaus and Carly, we were invited to see the work of the Homework Club in action. Their IT Skills class, known as Click2Connect, was in full swing, with participants working their way through a series of tasks.
This week, they were setting up email accounts and practicing sending emails. This ensured that the group was not only learning IT skills, but practicing English language skills too. We sat with the learners and heard all about how the course was going for them, and their hopes for future learning.
The atmosphere was warm and friendly, with everyone helping each other out.
Soran’s story
Soran came to the UK seeking safety and has completed our 8-week Click2Connect computer skills class. He studied at university and earned a Bachelor’s degree in his home country, but has struggled to find work in the UK in the year and a half he has been here. In conversation with him, he said that he is interested in IT as a possible career because ‘you just need to show your skill rather than requiring a qualification’. A big hurdle that he has been trying to overcome are his English language skills and confidence in using English and computers. Because of Soran’s interests in gaining additional computer skills and improving his English, he decided to register for our class. The material on the course was generally review for him, but there were two big areas that being in the class helped him with: increasing his confidence in using English and giving him a first qualification (at SCQF level 3) in computers that will help him get into college. Soran is now more confident speaking with people he doesn’t know as well as more confident in using the computer. The class also offered him an opportunity to meet and socialise with other people in his new community, which he indicated was a benefit to taking the class. Soren’s goal is to register for college and complete the NQ Software Development Course. He says that ‘the world is changing and we have to change our mindsets. We don’t need more paperwork. We can do a lot of things on the computer and help our environment’. He is currently in the process of applying to college with the assistance of our Project Coordinator.

Traveler’s guide to the city of Omsk, Western Siberia’s secret gem
Omsk was founded in 1716 when a wooden fort was constructed to house a Cossack unit in the area to protect the expanding Russian frontier from Central Asian nomadic incursions. It served various administrative functions throughout the 1800s and became infamous as a place of exile and incarceration. The city was rundown when selected as a hub for the Trans-Siberian railway in the 1890s. Many international trade companies and foreign consulates relocated here and the remnants of their offices can still be found in the city today.
The mystery of Kolchak’s gold
Kolchak was entrusted with a large portion of the Tsarist’s gold reserves, yet amazingly lost much of it. Supposedly 250 million rubles were lost (about $8 million at the time). Legend has it that they were buried near the village of Taiga, yet numerous excavations have turned up nothing. The area still attracts the occasional fortune seeker.
Kolchak’s headquarters are located at what is today the Omsk Regional Archives at Broz Tito St., 3. Nothing shows how much times have changed as the imposing Kolchak statue that was unveiled in 2012 around the corner. The statue guards Kolchak restaurant , a four-story culinary complex featuring a steak house, an Irish pub, a Central Asian café and an Italian eatery. For more details on where and how to dig Kolchak's gold, see Top Ten Mysterious Lost Treasures of Russia
Dostoevsky and the Tsar
Most foreigners have heard of Omsk via writer Fyodor Dostoevsky who spent four years here as a prisoner (1849-1853). He spent most of his time in Omsk in squalor and chains and with no books besides the Bible, however, it left an indelible mark on his memory and influenced his future literary output. There is a statue of the writer in chains grasping a Bible at the corner of Partizanskaya and Spartakovskaya streets, where Dostoevsky undoubtedly stepped many times. A museum dedicated to the author's time in Omsk is located nearby at Dostoevskogo St. 1. The local university is also named for him.
Tarskaya Street is one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares. It features a monument to victims of Stalinist repressions and the Tara gates, originally built in 1792 as one of the four entrances to the Omsk fort. Nearby stands the Assumption Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Siberia. Future Tsar Nicholas II laid the first stone here in 1891 when making his way back to St. Petersburg after his Eastern journey.
In Omsk you are never more than a few steps from the village, made clear when one exits the center to the north, where most houses are wooden and roads unpaved. Stroll along Bulatova and Rabinovicha streets, a well-preserved ensemble of wooden architecture.
Omsk’s cultural heritage
One of Omsk’s most famous sons is Symbolist painter Mikhail Vrubel (1856-1910). Vrubel ignored contemporary trends and focused on themes from fairy tales, demons and religious subjects and also designed a majolica frieze for the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. Omsk’s Fine Arts Museum is named for him and features a number of his works .
Over the years a number of tourists have tripped over the monument to Stepanych. This bust of a plumber rising from a sewer was the idea of Omsk’s former mayor after a trip to Slovakia in the 1990s. Stepanych has become one of the symbols of the city.
Omsk is a hockey town, with one of the major teams, Avangard , in the KHL, Russia’s premiere professional league. Russian champions on several occasions, check out a match at Omsk Arena. But if you can’t catch a game there’s a large kiosk featuring the team’s merchandise at the airport.
Siberian punk, jazz and the classics
Perhaps Russia’s most famous punk band, Grazhdanskaya oborona (Civil Defence), was formed here in 1982. The band was active until 2008 when lead singer Yegor Letov died of heart failure at age 43. Letov is buried at the Staro-Vostochnoe cemetery. A sprawling graveyard with thousands of graves, fans should stop at the administration for help in locating his grave.
One of Omsk’s longest running live music venues is Jazz Cafe Party Piano . With live jazz and rock every night of the month, it’s legendary throughout Siberia. Take a taxi as it’s hard to find. Other options for live music include the Viking Folk Bar and Harat's Pub .
How to get there
The southern and northern branches of the Trans-Siberian Railway converge here with about 10 trains going to or from Moscow on any given day (37-47 hours each way) and many trains travel to and from the Far East (4-5 days) daily. Aeroflot, Transaero, and S7 fly to Moscow daily (3 hours). Less frequent flights connect to Saint Petersburg (3 hours), Krasnoyarsk (2 hours), as well as Frankfurt, Hannover and Köln in Germany (5 hours). For more information check out aeroomsk.ru
Where to stay
Central hotel choices include Tourist with rooms starting from 1800 rubles (about $47) and Ibis Sibir with rooms starting at 4000 rubles (about $104).
