Case Study 1: We can understand the necessity of political parties by imagining a situation without parties. Every candidate in the elections will be independent. So no one will be able to make any promises to the people about any major policy changes. The government may be formed, but its utility will remain ever uncertain. As societies became large and complex, they also need some agency to gather different views on various issues and to present these to the government.

It gave the government enormous powers to repress political activities, and allowed detention of political prisoners without trial for two years. Mahatma Gandhi wanted non-violent civil disobedience against such unjust laws, which would start with a hartal on 6 April.

In covalent compounds atoms share valence electrons to satisfy the octet. Each atom shares one pair or two pairs or three pairs of electrons depending on their combining capacity. In electron dot structures only number of valence electrons are shown around the symbols of constituent atoms. Carbon using its valency of four can make either single, double or triple bonds with other carbon atoms or any other atoms. Carbons self-linking property is called catenation. In hydrocarbons carbon makes aliphatic or cyclic molecules they are either saturated or unsaturated. Based on these facts Read the following paragraph and answer the questions given below.

An element X combines with Y to form a colourless odourless gas, Z which turns lime water milky is the major constituent of all organic molecules. Five X atoms combines with hydrogens to form a cyclic saturated hydrocarbon J and aliphatic unsaturated hydrocarbon Q. Q is used in gas welding.

(1) Identify compound Z and draw its electron dot structure.

(2) Write the chemical formula and IUPAC name of compound Q

(3) What is the common name of Q

(4) How many single covalent bonds are present in compound J?

Q. Read the following carefully and answer the questions.

Atoms of eight elements A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H have the same number of shells but different number of electrons in their outermost shell. It was found that elements A and G combine to form an ionic compound. This compound is added in a small amount to almost all vegetable dishes during cooking. Oxides of elements A and B are basic in nature while those of E and F are acidic. The oxide of D is almost neutral.

Based on the above information answer the following questions:

(1) To which group or period of the Periodic Table do the listed elements belong?

(2) What would be the nature of compound formed by a combination of elements B and F?

(3) Which two of these elements could definitely be metals?

(4) If the number of electrons in the outermost shell of elements C and G be 3 and 7 respectively, write the formula of the compound formed by the combination of C and G.

Answer Quality of life also depends on non materialistic thing like quality of air, peaceful society , healthy environment and law and order condition which cannot be majorly buy by money. Development is majorly a subjective term and hence precise by different people differently.

Answer First different persons can have different developmental goals and second, what may be development for one may not be development for the other. It may even be destructive for the other.

Case Study 2:

A developed country is a highly industrial growth oriented country where quality of life is high, presence of developed economy and advanced technology. While the developing countries are those that are in either pre industrialization or in industrialization process. These economies are mostly relies in agrarian form of economy and there per capita income is generally less than the others. Another aspect of the developed countries are their highly dominating tertiary and Quaternary Sector. While tertiary sector provides services such as entertainment, finance and retailers quaternary sector comprises of knowledge based activities like of Information technology , research and development as well as areas of consulting services etc.  There is no all-agreed definition of a developed country.

Agencies such as the United Nations, the World Bank, the World Trade Organization, and the World Economic Forum use their indicators to club developed and developing countries. For example, the UN classifies countries into low, lower-middle, upper-middle, and high-income countries.

This classification is based on an individual country’s gross national income (GNI) per capita. Low –Income Economy: GNI per capita of up to $1,085 Lower Middle-income: GNI per capita up to $4,255 Upper-Middle-income: GNI per capita $13,205 High-Income economy: GNI per capita above $13,205.

Answer  Average income which is the total income of the country divided by its total population. The average income is also called per capita income

Answer  Development refers to a broader, multidimensional improvement in living standards, education, healthcare, and overall well-being. Growth is primarily quantitative and relates to an increase in factors like GDP, population, or production. While growth is measurable, development encompasses qualitative aspects and focuses on the quality of life.

The Human Development Report (HDR) by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is a vital tool for assessing a nation’s progress beyond mere economic growth. In the context of India, the HDR provides a nuanced perspective. While India has made significant economic strides, socio-economic disparities persist. The report highlights challenges in health, education, and income inequality, reflecting the complexity of India’s development journey. It underscores the importance of inclusive policies to ensure that the nation’s remarkable growth benefits all citizens. As India continues its development path, the HDR serves as a crucial benchmark, guiding efforts towards a more equitable and prosperous future. A student’s BMI could be within the normal range or less than that (underweight) or more (obesity). For example, if a girl student is 14 years and 8 month old and the BMI is 15.2, then she is undernourished. Similarly, if the BMI of a boy aged 15 years and 6 months is 28, then he is overweight.

Questions based on case studies are some real-life examples. The questions are asked based on a given paragraph i.e. Case Study.  Usually, 4-5 questions are asked on the basis of the given passage. In most cases, these are either MCQs or assertion & reason type questions. Let’s take an example to understand. There is one paragraph on how nitrogen is generated in the atmosphere. On the basis of this paragraph, the board asks a few objective-type questions. In other words, it is very similar to the unseen passages given in language papers. But the real cases may be different. Read the following and answer any four questions: Salt of a strong acid and strong base is neutral with a pH value of 7. NaCl common salt is formed by a combination of hydrochloride and sodium hydroxide solution. This is the salt that is used in food. How to Attempt the Case-Based Questions in Science?

Before answering this question, let’s read the text given in question number 17 of the CBSE Model Question Paper.

All living cells require energy for various activities. This energy is available by the breakdown of simple carbohydrates either using oxygen or without using oxygen.

See, there are only two sentences and CBSE is asking you 5 questions based on these two sentences. Now let’s check the first questions given there.

Energy in the case of higher plants and animals is obtained by a) Breathing b) Tissue respiration c) Organ respiration d) Digestion of food

Now let us know if you can relate the question to the paragraph directly. The two sentences are about energy and how it is obtained. But neither the question nor the options have any similar text in the paragraph.

So the conclusion is, in most cases, you will not get direct answers from the passage. You will get only an idea about the concept. If you know it, you can answer it but reading the paragraph even 100 times is not going to help you.
