EBSCO Open Dissertations

EBSCO Open Dissertations makes electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) more accessible to researchers worldwide. The free portal is designed to benefit universities and their students and make ETDs more discoverable.

Increasing Discovery & Usage of ETD Research

EBSCO Open Dissertations is a collaboration between EBSCO and BiblioLabs to increase traffic and discoverability of ETD research. You can join the movement and add your theses and dissertations to the database, making them freely available to researchers everywhere while increasing traffic to your institutional repository.

EBSCO Open Dissertations extends the work started in 2014, when EBSCO and the H.W. Wilson Foundation created American Doctoral Dissertations which contained indexing from the H.W. Wilson print publication, Doctoral Dissertations Accepted by American Universities, 1933-1955. In 2015, the H.W. Wilson Foundation agreed to support the expansion of the scope of the American Doctoral Dissertations database to include records for dissertations and theses from 1955 to the present.

How Does EBSCO Open Dissertations Work?

Your ETD metadata is harvested via OAI and integrated into EBSCO’s platform, where pointers send traffic to your IR.

EBSCO integrates this data into their current subscriber environments and makes the data available on the open web via opendissertations.org .

EBSCO Open Dissertations

Search millions of electronic theses and dissertations (etds).

With EBSCO Open Dissertations, institutions and students are offered an innovative approach to driving additional traffic to ETDs in institutional repositories. Our goal is to help make their students’ theses and dissertations as widely visible and cited as possible.

This approach extends the work started in 2014, when EBSCO and the H.W.

Get involved in the EBSCO Open Dissertations project and make your electronic theses and dissertations freely available to researchers everywhere. Please contact Margaret Richter for more information.

How to find resources by format

Why use a dissertation or a thesis.

A dissertation is the final large research paper, based on original research, for many disciplines to be able to complete a PhD degree. The thesis is the same idea but for a masters degree.

They are often considered scholarly sources since they are closely supervised by a committee, are directed at an academic audience, are extensively researched, follow research methodology, and are cited in other scholarly work. Often the research is newer or answering questions that are more recent, and can help push scholarship in new directions.

University of Minnesota Dissertations and Theses FAQs

What dissertations and theses are available.

With minor exceptions, all doctoral dissertations and all "Plan A" master's theses accepted by the University of Minnesota are available in the University Libraries system. In some cases (see below) only a non-circulating copy in University Archives exists, but for doctoral dissertations from 1940 to date, and for master's theses from 1925 to date, a circulating copy should almost always be available.

"Plan B" papers, accepted in the place of a thesis in many master's degree programs, are not received by the University Libraries and are generally not available. (The only real exceptions are a number of old library school Plan B papers on publishing history, which have been separately cataloged.) In a few cases individual departments may have maintained files of such papers.

In what libraries are U of M dissertations and theses located?

Circulating copies of doctoral dissertations:.

  • Use Libraries Search to look for the author or title of the work desired to determine location and call number of a specific dissertation. Circulating copies of U of M doctoral dissertations can be in one of several locations in the library system, depending upon the date and the department for which the dissertation was done. The following are the general rules:
  • Dissertations prior to 1940 Circulating copies of U of M dissertations prior to 1940 do not exist (with rare exceptions): for these, only the archival copy (see below) is available. Also, most dissertations prior to 1940 are not cataloged in MNCAT and can only be identified by the departmental listings described below.
  • Dissertations from 1940-1979 Circulating copies of U of M dissertations from 1940 to 1979 will in most cases be held within the Elmer L. Andersen Library, with three major classes of exceptions: dissertations accepted by biological, medical, and related departments are housed in the Health Science Library; science/engineering dissertations from 1970 to date will be located in the Science and Engineering Library (in Walter); and dissertations accepted by agricultural and related departments are available at the Magrath Library or one of the other libraries on the St. Paul campus (the Magrath Library maintains records of locations for such dissertations).
  • Dissertations from 1980-date Circulating copies of U of M dissertations from 1980 to date at present may be located either in Wilson Library (see below) or in storage; consult Libraries Search for location of specific items. Again, exceptions noted above apply here also; dissertations in their respective departments will instead be in Health Science Library or in one of the St. Paul campus libraries.

Circulating copies of master's theses:

  • Theses prior to 1925 Circulating copies of U of M master's theses prior to 1925 do not exist (with rare exceptions); for these, only the archival copy (see below) is available.
  • Theses from 1925-1996 Circulating copies of U of M master's theses from 1925 to 1996 may be held in storage; consult Libraries search in specific instances. Once again, there are exceptions and theses in their respective departments will be housed in the Health Science Library or in one of the St. Paul campus libraries.
  • Theses from 1997-date Circulating copies of U of M master's theses from 1997 to date will be located in Wilson Library (see below), except for the same exceptions for Health Science  and St. Paul theses. There is also an exception to the exception: MHA (Masters in Health Administration) theses through 1998 are in the Health Science Library, but those from 1999 on are in Wilson Library.

Archival copies (non-circulating)

Archival (non-circulating) copies of virtually all U of M doctoral dissertations from 1888-1952, and of U of M master's theses from all years up to the present, are maintained by University Archives (located in the Elmer L. Andersen Library). These copies must be consulted on the premises, and it is highly recommended for the present that users make an appointment in advance to ensure that the desired works can be retrieved for them from storage. For dissertations accepted prior to 1940 and for master's theses accepted prior to 1925, University Archives is generally the only option (e.g., there usually will be no circulating copy). Archival copies of U of M doctoral dissertations from 1953 to the present are maintained by Bell and Howell Corporation (formerly University Microfilms Inc.), which produces print or filmed copies from our originals upon request. (There are a very few post-1952 U of M dissertations not available from Bell and Howell; these include such things as music manuscripts and works with color illustrations or extremely large pages that will not photocopy well; in these few cases, our archival copy is retained in University Archives.)

Where is a specific dissertation of thesis located?

To locate a specific dissertation or thesis it is necessary to have its call number. Use Libraries Search for the author or title of the item, just as you would for any other book. Depending on date of acceptance and cataloging, a typical call number for such materials should look something like one of the following:

Dissertations: Plan"A" Theses MnU-D or 378.7M66 MnU-M or 378.7M66 78-342 ODR7617 83-67 OL6156 Libraries Search will also tell the library location (MLAC, Health Science Library, Magrath or another St. Paul campus library, Science and Engineering, Business Reference, Wilson Annex or Wilson Library). Those doctoral dissertations still in Wilson Library (which in all cases should be 1980 or later and will have "MnU-D" numbers) are located in the central section of the third floor. Those master's theses in Wilson (which in all cases will be 1997 or later and will have "MnU-M" numbers) are also located in the central section of the third floor. Both dissertations and theses circulate and can be checked out, like any other books, at the Wilson Circulation desk on the first floor.

How can dissertations and theses accepted by a specific department be located?

Wilson Library contains a series of bound and loose-leaf notebooks, arranged by department and within each department by date, listing dissertations and theses. Information given for each entry includes name of author, title, and date (but not call number, which must be looked up individually). These notebooks are no longer current, but they do cover listings by department from the nineteenth century up to approximately 1992. Many pre-1940 U of M dissertations and pre-1925 U of M master's theses are not cataloged (and exist only as archival copies). Such dissertations can be identified only with these volumes. The books and notebooks are shelved in the general collection under these call numbers: Wilson Ref LD3337 .A5 and Wilson Ref quarto LD3337 .U9x. Major departments of individual degree candidates are also listed under their names in the GRADUATE SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT programs of the U of M, available in University Archives and (for recent years) also in Wilson stacks (LD3361 .U55x).

UK theses and dissertations from EThOS

The Electronic Theses Online System (EThOS) offers free access to the full text of UK theses.

  • EThOS offers a one stop online shop providing free access to UK theses
  • EThOS digitizes theses on request into PDF format, this may require payment
  • EThOS is managed by the British Library in partnership with a number of UK universities
  • EThOS is open to all categories of library user

What does this mean to you as a library user?

When you need to access a PhD thesis from another UK based HE institution you should check EThOS to either download a thesis which has already been digitised or to request that a UK thesis be supplied to you.

  • For all UK theses EThOS will be the first point of delivery. You can use the online ordering and tracking system direct from EThOS to manage your requests for UK PhD theses, including checking the status of your requests
  • As readers you will deal directly with EThOS so will not need to fill in a document delivery request
  • OU staff and research students will still be entitled to access non-UK based PhD theses by filling in a document delivery request
  • In some cases where EThOS is unable to supply a UK thesis OU staff and research students will be able to access it by filling in a conventional document delivery request. The thesis will be supplied through direct loan
  • The EThOS system is both faster and cheaper than the previous British Theses service which was based on microfilm
  • The British Library no longer arranges interlibrary loans for UK PhD theses
  • Interlibrary Loan procedures for other types of request from the British Library (articles and books for example) will remain the same

If you have any queries about using EThOS contact the Document Delivery Team ( [email protected] or the Library Helpdesk ).

Note 13/03/2024: The British Library is continuing to experience a major technology outage affecting its websites and other online systems, due to a Cyber attack. as a result access to ETHOS might not be possible until the issue is fixed.

The database Dissertations and Theses Global (ProQuest) is the best place to begin searching for theses and dissertations. Approximately half the listings include full text. Dissertations can also be found in a search of the AU Library Catalog .

For dissertations and theses written by AU students and not found in Dissertations and Theses Global, consult the database  Dissertations and Theses (American University-authored) .

The AU Digital Research Archive  (AUDRA)  also has electronic versions of some AU dissertations and theses.

EBSCO Open Dissertations is a free database with records for more than 800,000 electronic theses and dissertations in institutional repositories around the world. Open Dissertations includes the content from American Doctoral Dissertations, plus additional metadata from a number of colleges and universities.

Another free source is Open Access Theses and Dissertations .

Some dissertations and theses can be purchased directly from ProQuest.com at ProQuest Dissertation Copy Options .

If you encounter any issues while trying to use the ProQuest site, please refer to their ProQuest Dissertations FAQ .

If you would like further assistance, please Ask-A-Librarian .

Turning Your Dissertation into a Book: A Step-by-Step Guide to the Publishing Process

If you’ve recently completed your dissertation and you’re proud of the work you’ve done, you may be wondering how to share it with a wider audience. One option is to publish your dissertation as a book. While this process can be daunting, it can also be incredibly rewarding.

Can I publish my thesis as a book

Here are some tips to help you get started:

Determine if your dissertation is book-worthy

Not all dissertations are suited for publication. Before investing time and effort into the publishing process, do some research to determine if there’s a market for your work. Look for books in your field that are similar to your dissertation and see how well they sell. Why you need a fake online identity

Surfshark Alternative ID

The danger of using an unprotected identity

Venturing online can be a dangerous business. Bad actors want your personal data, and will go to almost any lengths to get hold of it for their own benefit, and at your cost. If you use an unprotected identity online, and the wrong person gets hold of your email address, for example, the very least you can expect is an avalanche of spam and phishing messages. And it can get a lot worse than that.

Let’s say you’re trying to get a discount code, and the codes site asks you to enter your email address. And then you use the discount code to buy from an ecommerce website, and this too requires the use of an email address. Maybe it’s a site you’ve not used before, or one with a sketchy reputation, or a data protection policy that’s alarmingly vague. In these scenarios, how confident are you that your email address will be kept securely and used responsibly, rather than being sold on to a data broker who will add it to dozens of marketing subscription lists? You’re probably familiar with the annoying way that buying from a website, even if you carefully tick all the boxes saying “please don’t send me marketing messages,” still seems to generate a ton of spam afterwards.

But it could be worse. If your email address ends up in particularly unscrupulous hands, you may start to receive phishing emails. These are sometimes easy to spot, but get this wrong just once and you may find yourself the victim of identity theft, financial harm or a wrecked credit score, the leaking of embarrassing personal information and more. And that’s before we get to the frightening dangers presented by online stalkers.

Some of these scenarios are predictable–such as after buying from an obviously dodgy website. But even reputable sites get it wrong some of the time, or may end up losing your data in the event of a breach. And there are many other seemingly innocuous interactions that can spell trouble if your identity isn’t protected. Subscribing to an email newsletter can keep you entertained and informed, but who knows what else you’ll be signed up to? When applying for jobs, entering competitions, dating, or pursuing social activities, are you always certain that the person you’re contacting is who they say they are, and can be trusted with your details? Any time you send an email or tell a person or business your contact details, there is a danger that the information will be scraped and put to nefarious purposes.

The advantages of multiple identities

In many online interactions, particularly those with a contact and business with whom you haven’t yet built up a relationship of trust, it makes sense to use a secondary identity: one based around a backup email address you don’t normally use but which you can access if needed. Many of us have second or third email addresses we habitually use when a business insists we provide one; and then, when the spam starts to arrive, we’re not bothered by it. Indeed, having a large number of addresses can help identify where the spam is coming from and help you to hold the sources accountable.

The problem with this method is that it can be cumbersome and inconvenient. Remembering the username and password for many different accounts is difficult, while re-using the same details, or recording them in an insecure location, is a security red flag. Break into one account and you may find you’ve been frozen out of them all.

So what’s the solution?

Your options compared

There are several routes you can take here.

Burner email: A method specifically created to handle this issue. The service generates an entirely new email account for you, which you enter while buying from a website or signing up to a competition, and then vanishes a prescribed time later. Such services generally lack a transparent privacy policy, however, and are limited in scope to email addresses only. If you need a full online identity, or a long-term solution, this isn’t for you.

Creating a second, throwaway email account: Why not keep things simple and create a second email address for those moments when you’re unsure the recipient is trustworthy? This is the impromptu method many of us have used for years to evade the worst attentions of spammers, but it’s hardly convenient: you need to manage multiple inboxes and passwords, and it can be time-consuming to set them up. Not to mention that the email provider you’re signing up with is still likely to be collecting your data, which means you’re avoiding one privacy headache by submitting to another.

Fake name generator: Such services can help if you’re reluctant to provide your real name, but again, they often have questionable privacy policies of their own. If the service is free, it is likely to be supported by data collection or irritating adverts; if not, that’s an extra expense to worry about for something very limited.

Creating an entire fake identity for yourself: The nuclear option. You can create a fake name, a postal address, and all the other aspects of an identity for yourself, and then use these when interacting with potentially suspect contacts. The problem is that (aside from being time-consuming) this is tremendously difficult: simply passing US address validation, for example, is a challenge, while most sites are wise to this method and will be set up to reject obvious or common default names. And aside from everything else, it’s surprisingly tricky to come up with convincing local names!

How Surfshark Alternative ID can help

Okay, so those four methods each have problems and limitations. But there’s a fifth option that we’d suggest is a better choice for most Macworld readers, and that’s Surfshark’s Alternative ID.

Alternative ID is a feature designed to help protect your privacy and security by generating a brand-new online identity for you, with none of the hassle of the previously discussed approaches. Simply tell Surfshark any key details you wish to apply to the identity, and the company will do all the rest of the work. You’ll be presented with an entire online persona, including an email address you can use when signing up to codes websites or shopping online, and your real identity will be protected.

Surfshark Alternative ID

There’s none of the cumbersome management involved in juggling multiple email accounts. Emails to the new address will be safely forwarded to your real inbox, enabling you to click verification links or access any information that’s worth having, but it’s easy to divert these into a separate folder if spam starts to predominate. And unlike with burner emails, the identity is good for as long as you need it. This feature is available via the company’s browser extension, together with a VPN and ad blocker.

It’s the best and safest way to keep your data out of the hands of brokers, spammers, and scammers. And right now, there’s a fantastic deal: 81% off + two free months. Sign up today.

NY court will publish transcripts from Trump's hush money trial. Here's how you can access them.

New York courts will publish daily transcripts of former President Donald Trump's hush money trial , officials have announced.

New York typically does not allow audio or visual coverage in court rooms, meaning the public is unable to watch the first criminal trial of a former president in U.S. history live.

But certified transcripts of each day's proceedings will be posted to the New York State Unified Court System's media website by the end of the following business day, according to a news release Monday . Transcripts can be expensive and sometimes unavailable, depending on the location or particular court system.

“This historic case, which has generated unparalleled public interest, calls for this historic step by the court system," First Deputy Chief Administrative Judge Norman St. George said in the news release. "This will serve to enhance public understanding of the trial with minimum disruption to the courtroom proceedings.”

What is Donald Trump on trial for in New York?

Trump has pleaded not guilty to charges that he falsified business records to cover up a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels that was designed to unlawfully interfere in the 2016 presidential election.

Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen  issued the payment and violated federal campaign finance laws, according to prosecutors. But they also argue Trump authorized the payment to help his presidential campaign and falsified records to cover up the checks he sent to reimburse Cohen for the hush money.

The trial kicked off April 15 with jury selection , which concluded Friday. Both legal teams gave their opening arguments Monday, and the prosecution called its first witness: David Pecker , former head of the tabloid the National Enquirer's parent company.

Welcome to Scam World

Toma Vagner

Steven Kurutz

By Steven Kurutz

You open your eyes and grope for your phone. You check your inbox and discover dozens of spam emails that made it past the filter.

Tapping over to Instagram, you find a request for a supposed brand collaboration in your DMs . Your WhatsApp notifications, meanwhile, consist solely of strangers asking you to invest in a cryptocurrency exchange.

A recruiting manager has contacted you through LinkedIn to say they are “impressed with your unique background and journey” and want to discuss “exciting job opportunities” at several Fortune 500 companies.

While scrolling social media on your lunch break, you see Tom Hanks promoting a dental plan and Taylor Swift peddling a cookware giveaway. (Or at least that’s what seems to be going on.)

On the way home from work, you receive a text alert from FedEx, with a tracking number and a link to update your delivery preferences — except you don’t remember any pending shipments to your home.

Should you click the link? Pick up that call? Pursue that job opportunity? Is the person who texted you “hey” just now from a number you don’t recognize someone you actually know?

Welcome to Scam World, the seedy layer just beneath the world we live in every day. It’s cluttered with these bogus text messages, spam calls and phishing attempts.

In Scam World, any engagement with a stranger is a risk. Thanks to spoofing , for example, which cloaks the identity and location of the computer or phone being used, a call could be from a helpful customer service representative or a cyber criminal pretending to be one.

The internet is moving too fast for regulators to keep up with the quickly evolving deceptions.

There are political donation scams , in which someone masquerading as a campaign worker seeks a contribution. There are sextortion scams , in which a person posing as a hacker claims to have recorded you watching porn through your laptop camera. There are medical billing scams , rental scams , employment scams .

Seemingly every facet of daily life now comes with its attendant scam — even death , when details in online obituaries result in identity theft. And the prospect that we may be deceived at any time “leaves us feeling vulnerable,” said Pamela Rutledge, the director of the Media Psychology Research Center in Boston.

“The lack of trust means you’re not able to take information at face value,” she said. “You’ve got a heightened state of vigilance.”

‘Groomed’ to Be Scammed

In the early years of digital culture, the border between the real world and the internet was firm. Surfing the web for an hour or two in the evening felt like a hobby separate from the business of everyday life.

Now we carry the internet around in our pockets and rely on it for practically every aspect of daily life. “We are in the computer,” said Rachel Tobac, the chief executive of SocialProof Security , a cybersecurity company.

Living our lives online has bred a misplaced but necessary trust. It would be difficult to use TikTok, Uber and Gmail every day while believing that doing so creates a perilous risk. Many people “turn their brains off” when they go about their business on these apps and platforms, Ms. Tobac said, “because it is so stressful to consider that these interactions are potentially harming.”

To be sure, there are still plenty of real-world fraudsters and grifters, some of whom — like Anna Delvey and Sam Bankman-Fried — have become figures of fascination. But “a digital realm creates a bigger funnel — at less cost — for scams,” said Cory Doctorow , a journalist and science-fiction author who has written about the web since its early days.

Mr. Doctorow noted that, just as the internet has made routine tasks less burdensome, it has also made scams much easier to pull off. Picture an old-school boiler room in which fast-talking con artists place hundreds of phone calls in an effort to fleece strangers out of their savings, he said. Now fast forward to 2024, when scammers can send out millions of phishing texts and emails with the help of bots.

“If you can automate parts of it,” Mr. Doctorow said, “you can cast a much wider net.”

Text scams tricked Americans out of $300 million in 2022, the Federal Trade Commission reported. That same year, Americans received 225 billion spam texts, a 157 percent increase from the previous year, according to a report by Robokiller , a company that sells a spam-blocker app.

As digitally savvy and cautious as he is, Mr. Doctorow is not immune to phishing.

In December, while vacationing with his family in New Orleans, he got a call from his bank asking if had spent $1,000 at an Apple store in New York. In fact, the caller was a scammer who had gotten hold of Mr. Doctorow’s phone number and the name of his credit union — perhaps from one of the many data brokers that collect personal information and sell it to third parties — and then used spoofing software to appear as his bank on his caller ID.

During the call, Mr. Doctorow gave out the last seven digits of his debit card number — enough information for the scammer to run up charges on his account.

Sophisticated tech makes this kind of deception possible. But Mr. Doctorow argued that, thanks to outsourcing and automation, the typical communication sent by the customer service departments of many large companies has become “indistinguishable from a phishing scam.”

The prevalence of online deceptions can also add a bit of unwanted drama to mundane tasks. Recently, Ms. Rutledge, the psychologist, thought she was being scammed when she received a letter from a government office on “the crappiest letterhead I’ve ever seen.”

“This can’t possibly be real,” she remembered thinking.

But it was.

As Mr. Doctorow put it, “The legitimate world looks so much like a scam that it’s much easier to make a scam look like the legit world.”

A Dystopian Present

The science fiction author William Gibson, who coined the term cyberspace, made a hacker the protagonist of his 1984 novel, “Neuromancer,” which is set in the 2030s . Some 25 years after he wrote it, he began setting his books not in the distant future but in the present.

The fraught landscape of the 2020s seems especially Gibson-like — a destabilizing, fatiguing grind in which the very technology we rely on makes us unsure that what we see and hear is real.

Two recent incidents reveal how easy it is to get sucked into Scam World.

In February, a finance worker in Hong Kong was tricked into transferring $26 million of his company’s money to fraudsters who impersonated his colleagues on a video call. The scam made use of “deepfake” recreations sophisticated enough to make him believe he was speaking with his boss and other staff members. (The phony promotions featuring Tom Hanks and Taylor Swift used similar technology.)

Days after Bloomberg reported on the elaborate scam in Hong Kong, The Cut published a first-person account by Charlotte Cowles headlined “The Day I Put $50,000 in a Shoe Box and Handed It to a Stranger.”

Toward the start of the story, Ms. Cowles, a financial journalist who has also written for The New York Times, writes that “a polite woman with a vague accent told me she was calling from Amazon customer service to check some unusual activity on my account.”

What followed was a psychodrama straight out of Hitchcock: After Ms. Cowles was informed that she was the victim of identity theft, she was transferred to an F.T.C. investigator and then to a C.I.A. agent. She learned that she was being investigated for federal crimes and that her phone was tapped.

The hourslong ordeal — a drama entirely manufactured by scammers, played out over a phone line — contained all the ingredients of a modern scam, Ms. Tobac said. “They’re spoofing customer service, building authority with sensitive details from data brokerage sites, using urgency and fear and appealing to authority,” she said.

The reactions to the story were not universally sympathetic, and Ms. Cowles understood the complaints of critics who found her credulous.

“Certainly before this happened to me, I was someone who didn’t think I was vulnerable to scams,” she said in an interview.

The numbers belie that reaction, however.

More than 600,000 cases involving impostor scams were reported in the United States last year, costing Americans more than $2 billion, according to the F.T.C. The victims included Andy Cohen, the Bravo TV host, who went on NBC’s “Today” show in January to warn viewers of how he had lost thousands of dollars to someone posing as a representative from his bank.

Not long ago, online scams were much easier to spot. An elderly person ill at ease with the internet might fall for a clumsy, typo-ridden email asking for cash, but the rest of us were too web-savvy to be duped.

Nowadays, the victims of internet fraud are more likely to be people who grew up online. In 2023, for the first time, 18- to 24-year-olds lost more money to scams than any other age group, according to the Better Business Bureau .

TikTok is rife with Gen Z-ers posting about how they fell for an ad promoting a deal for a trendy mirror , or applied to a fake position on a job site , or had their email hacked by scammers who then hijacked their PayPal account.

Being digitally native doesn’t inoculate you; in fact, it makes you a target.

‘Politely Paranoid’

Martha McCully describes herself as “a very organized person,” and someone who keeps her online passwords in an encrypted vault in Bitwarden . A writer and brand consultant who splits her time between California and New York, Ms. McCully, 63, says she never clicks on a random link.

“How do I know you’re Chase?” Ms. McCully asked the woman who called her last December.

She had received a text from her bank, asking if she had spent $2,400 at Walmart. When she replied no, her phone immediately rang. The caller ID listed the number as “Chase Debit Card” on her screen, since Ms. McCully had put the number on the back of her card into her contacts.

By now, you know where this is going.

Ms. McCully stayed on the phone with a woman supposedly from Chase for more than two hours, time enough for the scammer to drain her account of $50,000 through wire transfers. In a diabolical maneuver, the woman was also spoofing Ms. McCully’s number to Chase representatives to make the transactions.

Her encrypted passwords offered her no protection. And Chase was not able to claw back the stolen money; it is probably gone for good, Ms. McCully said.

“I’m now so paranoid about everything,” she said. “I was having this dream this morning that my backyard was broken into.”

Ms. Cowles, the financial columnist, was similarly shaken after being scammed. She said she has been thinking lately about the book “ Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion ” by Robert Cialdini, which posits that when humans receive a favor or help, as happens during an exchange with a customer service representative, they are wired to reciprocate.

“That is a deeply embedded survival instinct,” Ms. Cowles said. “But now that we are so surrounded by information and noise, it’s almost as if our ability to understand who to fully trust has gone haywire. We have to second-guess ourselves every day.”

The strategies people have used to ward off the risks of the analog world may not apply to the new digital reality, said Ms. Tobac, the cybersecurity expert.

“We’re in easy territory for attackers,” she said. “We haven’t built up defenses.”

“I’m skeptical about almost everyone,” Ms. Tobac continued, noting that when she was contacted for this article, she put the reporter’s email address into a verification tool and used a second method of communication, reaching out on X. Only then did she feel safe enough to agree to a phone interview.

Ms. Tobac calls her approach being “politely paranoid.” She has to repeat her multi-step verification process dozens if not hundreds of times a week. Polite or not, she has learned to embrace the paranoia.

As if to underscore what it takes to maintain security in Scam World, she said midway through the interview: “This, by the way, is not my real number.”

Cavaliers vs. Magic TV channel, Game 2 live stream, how to watch 2024 NBA playoffs online, prediction

The cavaliers will look to take a commanding 2-0 series lead.

mitchell-cavs-magic-getty.png

After an embarrassing first-round exit last season, the Cleveland Cavaliers got this year's playoff journey off to a good start with a comfortable win over the Orlando Magic in Game 1 on Saturday. They'll look to take full control of the series on Monday night when the teams meet again for Game 2.

The Magic, on the other hand, will hope to feel more comfortable following what was the first postseason game for their young core. As a team, they finished 28-of-86 (32.6%) from the field for their worst shooting performance of the entire season. Even for a team that can struggle to score at times, Game 1 was brutal.

Ahead of Game 2, here's everything you need to know:

Cavaliers vs. Magic Game 2

  • Date:  Monday, April 22 |  Time : 7 p.m. ET
  • Location:  Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse -- Cleveland, Ohio
  • TV channel:  NBA TV |  Live stream :  fubo  (try for free)
  • Odds:  Cavaliers -5.5 | O/U 203.5

Cavaliers: The best news for the Cavaliers in Game 1 is that Donovan Mitchell looked like his usual self again as he finished with 30 points on 11-of-21 from the field. He struggled down the stretch, failing to reach the 20-point mark in five consecutive games at one point, which is a major reason they weren't able to grab a higher seed. They need him playing like the All-NBA version of himself if they want to win this series, and he did in Game 1. Now, can he keep it up against an elite Orlando defense?

Magic: Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner played fairly well on Saturday considering it was their first-ever playoff game, but they got no help whatsoever. Gary Harris , Joe Ingles , Cole Anthony and Markelle Fultz combined to go 0-of-19 from the field and Jalen Suggs ' 4-of-16 effort wasn't much better. That's simply not good enough, and the Magic need their supporting cast to be much better moving forward in this series.

Neither team broke 100 in Game 1, which is just the type of game the Magic wanted, and they still lost by double digits. That bodes poorly for their hopes the rest of the way. I'll take the Cavaliers to win and cover. Pick: Cavs -5.5
