Application letters are typically written to accompany school or job applications. The purpose of the letter is to introduce yourself to the decision committee, and to outline your qualifications in a specific way. It can be the only time other than an interview that you have a chance to really stand out in an application, so it's important to get it right. You can learn what to include in your letter, how to style it, and how to format it to give yourself the best chance.

Writing a Job Application

Step 1 Say why you're writing and what you're applying for in the first sentences.

  • A good example would be: "I'm writing to apply for the Chimney Sweep position advertised in Rolling Stone. I think my experience in the heating industry makes me uniquely qualified for this position. Please find my application materials and a brief description of my qualifications below."
  • Don't write your name until the signature. It'll be in the header and in the sign-off, so there's no reason to put it in the body of the letter itself.

Step 2 Explain why you are the best candidate.

  • Be specific. Who are you? Where do you come from? What's your story? These details are important. HR screeners read hundreds of these.
  • Describe your ambitions. Where do you want to go? How will this opportunity help you get there?
  • What skills and experiences make you the right fit? Be as specific as possible and avoid vague language. It's better to describe a time you solved a specific problem at your last job than to just write, "I'm a good problem solver at work."

Step 3 Keep the tone professional.

  • Tailor it to the business. If you're applying to work at a record store, you need to talk about music. If you're applying to work at a tech company that writes, "Tell us something totally rad about yourself!" it's probably ok to be a little more informal.

Step 4 Explain how both parties will benefit from your selection.

  • Don't over-promise. Telling someone that you can guarantee that you'll be able to turn around their sales figures in six months or less is a good way to get fired in six months.

Step 5 Do some research.

  • Any kind of job requires this type of research. If you apply to a restaurant, you need to be familiar with the menu and the kind of customers the restaurant attracts. Consider eating there a few times before you apply.
  • Don't show you're familiar by criticizing a business and telling them what you can do better. Not the time to offer a harsh criticism of a business plan that you don't really know anything about.

Writing a School Application

Step 1 Address the prompt.

  • Common prompts include things like, "Outline your qualifications for this position" or "In writing, explain how this position would affect your career goals." Sometimes, the prompt will be as short as, "Tell us something interesting about yourself."
  • If there is no prompt, but you still feel the need to introduce your application with a letter, it's usually best to keep it as short as possible. Explain what you're applying for, why you're applying, and thank the contact for their consideration. That's it.

Step 2 Tell your story.

  • Often, college prompts will ask you to describe a time you struggled, or a time you overcame some obstacle. Write about something unique, a time that you actually failed and dealt with the consequences.
  • The board will get thousands–literally, thousands–of letters about someone's first mission trip, and letters about the time someone's sports team was beaten, then overcame the odds, and won again. Avoid these topics.

Step 3 Write about your future.

  • Be specific. If you're writing to a college board, don't say, "I want to go to this college because I need a degree." That's obvious. What do you want to do with it? Why? If you're applying to a business, don't say, "I just need a job." That's obvious. Why this specific job?

Step 4 Don't include stuff that's also on your resume.

  • If you're applying to schools, what do you like about the school? What faculty are you interested in? Why this school, instead of another?

Formatting Application Letters

Step 1 Keep it short.

  • If you don't get a word-count guideline, just focus on making one or two good points about yourself, and keeping it at that. No need to drone on four several pages.

Step 2 Only address the letter if you have someone to address it to.

  • Instead of a salutation, write, "Letter of Application" at the top left corner of the page, or put it in the header on the left side at the top.
  • If you do have a contact, address it to them, making sure the name is spelled correctly. Then space down and start the body of the letter. [10] X Research source

Step 3 Use a standard font.

  • Sometimes, it's appropriate to type your name, then print out the letter and sign it in pen. That can be a nice touch.

First, let's understand the role of recommendation letters in your application.

Why are Recommendation Letters Important?

The majority of admissions officers at four-year colleges, especially private schools, emphasize that their process is holistic . They seek to gain a sense of the student as a "whole person," rather than focusing on pieces of who she is based solely on grades and test scores. Since they rarely meet the student in person, the recommendation letters, along with the student's own personal essay, play a huge role in illuminating her intellectual and personal qualities.

That's why recommendation letters from teachers, especially those who know their students well, carry a great deal of weight in applications. A letter that expresses a strong vote of support, as well as highlights a student's impressive academic and personal strengths , can have a powerful effect on that student's chances of admission.

At the same time, the letters don't go overboard because they have examples to back up their assessments. Specific examples and stories are key for backing up the assessment. How to Write a Strong Letter of Recommendation for College

If you’re a college counselor, coach, teacher, or mentor looking to support your college-bound students, chances are you’ve been asked to write a strong letter of recommendation. Stand-out letters of recommendation can give students a serious leg-up during college admissions. According to a 2024 post from Admit Report , college admissions officers will read as many as than 50,000 applications per admission cycle for a given university.

With that much competition, it can take a lot to help your student stand out. So, what catches an admissions officer’s eye? Strong letters of recommendation.

In that same survey, admissions counselors said letters of recommendation were more important to them than a student’s extracurricular activities, AP test scores, or even class rank. That means it’s worth putting a little extra effort into your next letter. Here’s how to write a college letter of recommendation that will blow the admission committee’s socks off.

Introduction

The introduction is one of the most important parts of your letter. This is your chance to hook the reader and draw them in. Here’s how to ace one common recommendation letter format. 

1. Open with a formal salutation

Your letter of recommendation should begin like any business letter. Keep in mind that, while common, “Dear Sir or Madam,” can feel gendered or outdated. “To Whom It May Concern,” is acceptable but can feel a little impersonal. If you can, find out the name of the admissions director. If you can’t find a direct contact, simply address your letter to “Dear Admissions Counselor.” Be sure to type on your official letterhead to give your letter an even more professional look.  

2. Introduce the student 

Start your first paragraph with a sentence or two explaining how long you’ve known the student and in what capacity. Were you their baseball coach, English teacher, or high school counselor ? Explain how you met. If possible, use a little descriptive detail to bring this anecdote to life, and mention your first impressions of the student. It’s usually standard to use the student’s first and last name upon first mention, then refer to them by their first name going forward.

3. Establish a personal connection 

Next, add a sentence or two demonstrating your connection to the student. This is one of the most crucial parts of writing a strong college letter of recommendation. Admissions officers are looking for endorsements from people who really know the candidate well. If you don’t have a personal connection to the student that goes beyond simply being their teacher or counselor, that’s okay. Remember, you can always say no and encourage them to ask someone else to write their letter instead.

One of the best ways to establish this connection and help a student stand out is to tell a memorable story that illustrates their character. Include an example of a time when their qualities or skills really shone. Maybe this is a story about how they stepped up in a leadership position, reacted well in a moment of success or failure, or went out of their way to help another student. Make sure it’s specific and personalized.

Use this section to paint a picture of this young person and explain what makes them stand out. 

1. Highlight the student’s achievements  

Use the next paragraph to mention the student’s top accomplishments. Keep in mind that the admissions officer will already have the student’s resume and GPA in front of them, so don’t waste time listing a bunch of achievements. 

Instead, mention a specific example or short anecdote that might add color to a prominent resume item. For example, the admissions officer probably already knows that your student is a varsity basketball player or a debate team captain. But if this is the hardest-working student-athlete you’ve ever coached or the most brilliant debater the school has ever seen, that’s worth a mention.

Another tip: While it can be helpful to use a letter template , try to avoid using the same formula for every student on your list. College admissions officers are often assigned to a particular region. That means the same person will likely end up reading the same high school teachers’ or counselors’ letters year after year. If your letters are practically the same for each student, the admissions officer will notice.

2. Speak to the student’s character 

Now that you’ve mentioned a student’s successes, it’s time to explain what personal qualities led to such success. Try to make this part of the letter flow naturally from the previous section. 

This is your chance to talk about the student’s hard work, magnetic personality, or aptitude for learning. That said, it’s best to avoid generic statements and clichés . The phrases “great work ethic,” and “strong team spirit” show up on thousands of letters each year. Instead, use concrete examples and descriptive detail to bring your student’s character traits to life. 

Instead of “He’s thoughtful,” say “He’s capable of discussing even the most complex topics with humility and nuance.” Instead of “She’s intellectually curious,” say, “She thinks like a scientist, and over the last four years, she’s turned in such thoughtful lab assessments that sometimes I worried she was teaching me more than I was teaching her.” It’s that kind of vivid description and personalization that catches the attention of college admissions counselors. 

Also be mindful of racial biases and gender biases in letter writing . If you’re not mindful, these unconscious biases can sneak into your letter and negatively color the admissions officer’s view of your student.

3. Provide context 

Praise doesn’t mean much without context. Be sure to benchmark your student’s achievements against those of their peers. This kind of context gives college admissions counselors a better understanding of the student’s abilities. It will be easier for them to make admissions decisions when they can clearly evaluate a student’s performance relative to others. 

So, for example, a weak recommendation letter might state that a student “writes well and participates often in class.” A strong recommendation letter might say something like, “I’ve taught more than 2,000 students in my time as an educator and I’ve never met someone with such a knack for the written word. Many young people struggle to describe their inner world in vivid detail, but Henry succeeded in capturing both me and his classmates with his thoughtful, relatable prose.”

Your final paragraph is your chance to remind your reader why this student is so unique and deserving of a spot at this particular school. Be sure to follow these general guidelines:  

1. End on a positive note 

Your final paragraph should provide a brief summary of your recommendation so far and express why you believe so strongly in this particular student’s likelihood of success. It’s standard to include your contact information in the conclusion in case the admissions office has any further questions for you. This could include your email or office phone number — whatever you’re comfortable providing.   

2. Use a formal closing

As with your opening, the closing of your letter should be professional and businesslike. “Best Regards,” is a common closing, though “Sincerely,” or “Respectfully,” will also work.

Guidelines to follow as you write 

Writing a strong letter of recommendation isn’t just about what you write – it’s how you write, too. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind.

  • Keep it relatively brief: The audience you’re writing for has to evaluate countless recommendation letters just like the one you’re writing. Be respectful of their time and try to keep your letter to around one page in length.
  • Be honest and balanced : While it’s important to emphasize the student’s positive qualities, it’s just important to be honest and balanced in your assessment. Avoid exaggerations or misleading statements.
  • Tailor the recommendation to the college: Do some research on the colleges the student is applying to and customize your letter accordingly. Highlight traits or experiences that align with the particular college’s values or programs. This shows that you’ve taken the time to understand the student’s goals and aspirations.
  • Avoid cliches: Steer clear of overused phrases and generic statements. Instead, provide original and thoughtful insights about the student.
  • Use professional language and tone : The admissions process is serious business. Maintain a professional tone throughout the letter and use appropriate language. Avoid slang or informal expressions.
  • Proofread and edit : Take the time to review and edit your letter carefully. Check for any spelling or grammatical errors, and ensure that the letter flows smoothly and is well-organized. Consider asking a colleague to proofread it when you’re done.
  • Follow the guidelines : If the college or university provides specific guidelines or requirements for the letter of recommendation, make sure to follow them closely. This may include details on formatting, submission methods, or specific questions to address.
  • Give yourself enough time to write: Writing a college letter of recommendation can take hours, days, or weeks depending on who you are and your relationship to the student. Give yourself plenty of time to sit down, write a draft, and revisit it to make sure it’s polished enough to submit.

Law school is the most intellectually challenging and rewarding period of one’s educational career. The Moritz College of Law curriculum is intense, and our students are serious about their studies. We look not only for those who have a record of academic accomplishment but those who have the capacity to thrive in a rigorous learning environment such as ours. We consider each application holistically, and there is no single profile most suitable for admission.  Instead of looking for an “ideal” candidate, we invite applicants who bring a variety of skills, accomplishments, and aspirations to contribute to our dynamic community.

Professionalism takes shape in law school. Ohio State law students possess integrity, a strong work ethic, and a spirit of collegiality. What is the demographic makeup of your 1L class?

For the entering class of 2023, as of August 31, 2023, there were 161 students. Approximately 54% of students were female and 27% were students of color. Students ranged in age from 19-36 with a median age of 23. We had students from 30 states with 42% from outside the State of Ohio. 

What is the minimum LSAT/GPA at Moritz?

We have no minimum LSAT or GPA at Moritz. The Autumn 2023 incoming class has a median LSAT score of 165 and a median GPA of 3.83.

Do you have a part-time or night program?

No. Our program is full-time, conducted during the day.

May I apply to start in the summer or winter?

No. Fall semester is the only start time for our incoming 1L law students.

Does Moritz offer any specialty programs ?

Moritz offers programs in dozens of areas of law. The college also offers certificate programs in International Trade and Development, Dispute Resolution, and Children’s Studies. In addition, we offer the following clinical programs: Civil Clinic, Mediation Clinic, Criminal Defense Clinic, Prosecution Clinic, Justice for Children Clinic, Legislation Clinic, and Entrepreneurial Business Law Clinic. Where is the Moritz College of Law located?

Situated in Drinko Hall on the sprawling 1,756 acres of The Ohio State University, Moritz marks the southeastern entrance to campus. Less than 2 miles north of downtown, the school is just blocks away from the city’s Short North Arts District, the Arena District, and the Brewery District. How many applications do you receive?

Each year, Moritz receives between 1700-2000 applications for approximately 160 spots in the 1L class.

What do you require for your application?

A completed electronic application will include the following:

  • The application for admission and $60 application fee ($70 for international applicants)
  • Completed character and fitness section
  • Resume (generally 1-3 pages)
  • Personal statement (generally 2-3 pages)
  • Optional – Essays on leadership potential/experience; contributions to a diverse intellectual environment/multicultural experiences, commitment to public interest/public service

The following items must be submitted in addition to the completed application via CAS:

  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended
  • Two letters of recommendation (faculty letters of recommendation are strongly preferred for those students that are currently in school or have graduated within the past two years)

When should I take the LSAT?

There is no preferred testing date for the LSAT. It is offered nine times a year. Please note, however, that we may not accept scores from the July examination in the same year you wish to enroll. We will accept LSAT scores up to five years old.

What should I study at my undergraduate institution?

Moritz does not prefer or recommend any single area of study for a prospective student, and our students range in majors from accounting to zoology. While typical “law school majors” such as political science, business, history, and English are prominent, we also have students with backgrounds in engineering, education, biology, and mathematics. We encourage prospective students to study subjects that to them are most interesting. I tried checking my application status online but I can’t log in.

The Office of Admissions will notify applicants by e-mail when their application has been received and processed. The email will include log in information for the  online status page . It is important that the applicant provides the office with a current e-mail address and checks their e-mail regularly. I sent in all my materials, but my status online says my file is incomplete.

In most cases, your file is incomplete because we have not yet received your LSDAS report from LSAC. There is a slight time delay in when we receive your application and LSDAS report and processed the files as received. If you find that your status has remained incomplete for some time, please contact the Admissions Office at (614) 292-8810 or email at  [email protected] .

How is my application evaluated?

Moritz performs a holistic review of your application, meaning that all items in the file are considered before making a decision. In addition to LSAT scores and GPA, we also look at the candidate’s extracurricular involvement, work experience, personal statement, letters of recommendation, and a host of other factors when making a decision.

What is your deadline for applying?

Applications for admission to the College of Law should be submitted anytime between September 15 and March 31 of the calendar year prior to the planned date of enrollment; although applications submitted after the preferential deadline of March 31 will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until the office determines applications will no longer be accepted.

I see your application has a character and fitness section. Will I automatically be denied admission if I answer “yes” to any of the questions?

No. Character and fitness issues are assessed on a case-by-case basis. By answering affirmatively to any of the questions in the character and fitness section, it will not necessarily harm your chances for admission. We do, however, require you submit an explanation regarding the issue. Please note that if the school learns that your answer to one or more of these questions was not accurate, your acceptance may be revoked or, if you are already enrolled, you may be subject to disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.

Why do I need to answer the questions in the character and fitness section?

After a law student applies to take the bar examination, the respective bar examiners have the law school provide an evaluation of that student’s character and fitness to practice law. Therefore, an essential part of assessing a student’s character and fitness to practice law must be completed when an applicant is considered for admission.

I’ve received a traffic ticket in the past. Am I required to report that?

No. Minor traffic and parking violations are not necessary to report. However, charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of drugs, and reckless driving must be disclosed as criminal charges.

While an undergraduate, I was placed on academic probation. Will that negatively affect my chances of being admitted?

Not necessarily. All character and fitness issues are assessed on a case-by-case basis. By submitting a required explanation, we can better understand the circumstances surrounding the issue and take that into consideration when reviewing your file.

I have new information that I would like to be added to my file, may I send that to the Admissions Office?

Yes. If your file has not yet been reviewed or has been deferred/waitlisted, you are welcome to send additional documentation in support of your admission. You are encouraged to email the additional information to the Admissions Office at  [email protected] . When emailing information, please include your LSAC account number for quick identification.

Do you have an early decision program?

Applicants to The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law frequently indicate that Ohio State is their first choice for a legal education. For those students who have carefully researched their law school opportunities, the Early Decision Option provides an expeditious evaluation and decision by the Admissions Committee. This early notification has the advantage of enabling successful early decision applicants to pursue their educational, professional and familial engagements and responsibilities free of the time, expense and anxiety associated with the typical law school application process. Successful Early Decision applicants will be notified of scholarship awards soon after admission. Thus, the applicant should be in a position to commit to attending Ohio State even though they might not have a complete financial aid package at the time of their deposit. It is important to recognize that the benefits associated with admission under the Early Decision Option are accompanied by a reduction in law school choice. Ohio State reserves the right to provide other law schools with the names of applicants accepted under our Early Decision Option.

Does Moritz permit transfer students?

Yes, provided the applicant has:

  • completed one year of work as a full-time student at an accredited law school;
  • ranked in the upper-third of his/her law school class; and
  • quantifiable pre-law credentials comparable to those of the Ohio State law student with whom he/she would be competing.

A transfer applicant is responsible for making certain that the following items are on file with the Admissions Office six weeks prior to the desired date of enrollment:

  • The completed application and application fee of $60 (submitted electronically through LSAC)
  • Official transcripts of all work completed at all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended and the law school attended
  • A current CAS report sent from the Law School Admission Council.
  • An official letter from the law school attended certifying good standing and class rank
  • A letter of recommendation from a law professor who has taught the applicant in class
  • A resume including honors, awards, activities, and work experience
  • A brief statement (one page or less) giving the reason for transfer to the Moritz College of Law

What is the application fee?

The fee is $60 for domestic applicants and $70 for international applicants.

Applicants whose first language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Our minimum required TOEFL scores are 80 internet-based; 550 paper-based; or 213 computer-based. Our minimum required IELTS score is 6.5.

Applicants who are citizens of or who have completed a degree in one of the following countries or territories are exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement: See the complete list here .

Applicants who have held U.S. permanent resident, asylee or refugee status for at least one year from the first term of enrollment are also exempt from the English proficiency requirement.

Sending Test Scores

You must have taken an English test within the past two years. TOEFL and IELTS scores must be sent directly to Ohio State. For TOEFL score reports, Ohio State's institution code is #1592.

The fee is $70 for international applicants.

How long will it take for a decision to be made?

Ideally, from the time your application goes under review, we hope that you will receive a decision in six to ten weeks. However, be aware that this may fluctuate throughout the year. The Moritz College of Law Admissions Committee renders admissions decisions on a rolling basis after the application file is received and is complete (with supporting documents, such as the CAS report). Early decision applicants will receive a decision by December 21. Typically, decisions will be released in November, December, January, February, March, April and May on the final Friday of each month. Applicants will be notified of their decision via e-mail and decisions will be posted on the online status page. 

I applied in November and it is now March, why haven’t I heard a decision?

In some cases, your application file is not fully completed. We only begin reviewing an applicant’s file when we receive all of the necessary documents. In this case, it is best to call or email the Admissions Office at (614) 292-8810 or  [email protected]  to see if your file is missing any items.

Can I call and get my decision over the phone?

No. Both for the sake of your privacy and our phone lines, we do  not  give admissions decisions over the phone. Your decision will be displayed on the Applicant Status page and through email.

I am on the wait list. When will I know whether an admissions offer will be extended?

Once you have been placed on the wait list, you truly have to wait and see. Every year, Ohio State Law receives applications from qualified students in a number that far exceeds the number of available seats. We limit our entering class size to approximately 160 students. If you have been placed on the wait list, the Admissions Office has carefully reviewed your file. Although additional information may be submitted (i.e. an updated transcript), it will not be reviewed unless, and until, a decision is made to extend offers of admission to students on the wait list. The Admissions Office takes great effort to determine those students who really are planning to enroll so that we can determine, as soon as feasible, whether offers will be extended to wait-listed students. The number of students pulled from the wait list varies greatly each year.

Although we fully understand that each student on the wait list needs to know, as soon as possible, whether they will have an opportunity to attend Ohio State in the fall, we cannot extend offers from the wait list based upon individual student deadlines. If we are able to determine in late-June that the likelihood of an individual student being pulled from the wait list is very small, we will notify that student in order to assist them in finalizing other options.

If a decision is made to extend offers to students on the wait list, the Admissions Office will review the files and select a group of students for further consideration. Factors taken into account may include, but are not limited to, the recommendations of the Admissions Committee, comparability of quantifiable credentials to that of the seated class, compatibility with Moritz College of Law programming, and contribution to the range of diversity within the class (educational/experiential background, residency/nonresidency, ethnic/cultural, area of substantive interest, etc.).

Are scholarships given to incoming students?

I want to work during my first year. Is that permitted?

The Moritz College of Law has a long-standing policy that states that first-year students may not work. The first year of law school is very different from undergraduate school or holding a job, as the demands of the curriculum are inconsistent with outside employment. The American Bar Association, American Association of Law Schools, and the League of Ohio Law Schools impose a 20-hour maximum on the number of hours a second- or third-year student may work in a week. You can meet with the Dean of Student Affairs to ask about working as a 1L.

Can I get football tickets?

What classes will I take my first year?

Each student takes  Contracts ,  Torts ,  Criminal Law ,  Civil Procedure ,  Legal Research ,  Legal Writing and Analysis ,  Property ,  Legislation , and our Legal Practice and Perspectives Program courses.  Constitutional Law  is a required second-year course.

Do you offer deferred admissions?

Moritz does offer deferred admissions on a case-by-case basis. If you are admitted and are interested in a one-year deferral, please send an email to  [email protected]  explaining your reasons for a deferral.

Is a seat deposit required to hold my spot?

If you are admitted to Moritz and wish to attend in the fall, you must submit a $225 seat deposit. Only by submitting your seat deposit will you be able to reserve your seat in the 1L class.

Is the seat deposit refundable?

No. After you submit your seat deposit, it is not refundable under any circumstances. Should you choose not to attend Moritz, you will forfeit your deposit.

Your school must provide you with a letter of acceptance (LOA). Include the original or electronic copy of your letter with your study permit application.

Post-secondary students

Your school will be asked to make sure your letter of acceptance is valid.

Protesters take over Columbia University building hours after school starts suspending student demonstrators

Protesters at Columbia University broke windows at the Manhattan campus’ Hamilton Hall early Tuesday, hours after the school began suspending students who defied a deadline to leave a pro-Palestinian camp set up to protest the war in Gaza.

NBC News could not confirm how many people were inside Hamilton Hall, but the university’s student newspaper,  the Columbia Spectator , reported that dozens of protesters had occupied the building.

“Let’s finish what they did in 1968,” someone yelled, apparently referring to the famous protest against the Vietnam War in which the same building was occupied .

"Disclose, divest. We will not stop, we will not rest," people were heard chanting.

An NYPD spokesperson said that "we are outside the campus, not on the grounds" just before 2 a.m.

The demonstrators hung a banner outside the building, dubbing it “Hind’s Hall,” to recognize a 6-year-old girl,  Hind Rajab, who was found dead in Gaza  days after being trapped under Israeli fire. The protestors said they plan to take over Hamilton Hall in honor of Hind and all the Palestinians killed in the war's violence.

“This building is now being liberated,” someone in the crowd could be heard saying early Tuesday.

A Palestinian flag was also hung from a window of the building to face outward, and trash cans were used in an attempt to make a barrier. "Shut it down!" people chanted by the entrance, video from the scene showed.

On Monday, Columbia University began suspending students who failed to leave their pro-Palestinian encampment by the university's 2 p.m. deadline. Earlier in the day, the school's president said the school would not divest from Israel — a demand that has sparked protests on college campuses across the country. 

"We have begun suspending students," Ben Chang, vice president for communications and a spokesperson for the university, said about three hours after the deadline passed.

The university did not say how many students it suspended.

The university had told student demonstrators to vacate by 2 p.m. or else “be suspended pending further investigation” and barred from completing the spring semester.

At the encampment, now in its second week, participants voted nearly unanimously to stay put.

Around 2:45 p.m. — after the 2 p.m. warning time to leave — protesters marched on the quad and chanted “Disclose! Divest! We will not slow, we will not rest!’"

A part of the encampment has been cleared to make space for the upcoming commencement ceremony for graduates, and picketers are largely sticking to the perimeters of the encampment.

David Lederer, a 22-year-old sophomore at Columbia, walked up to the picket line and began waving a large Israeli flag in opposition to the protests.

"I’m here to show we’re here to stay; we’re not going anywhere," Lederer said.

President Minouche Shafik asked the protesters in her statement to voluntarily disperse, saying that the demonstration had created “an unwelcoming environment for many of our Jewish students and faculty,” that “external actors” have contributed to a “hostile environment” around university gates and that it had become a “noisy distraction” for students.

Shafik also cited the May 15 commencement, saying, “We also do not want to deprive thousands of students and their families and friends of a graduation celebration.”

More than 15,000 Columbia students are graduating this spring, the university said.

At the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, the main stage commencement ceremony was canceled after protests.

Columbia was the first institution struck by protests in support of the Palestinian cause, with students demanding that the school divest from investments that support weapons manufacturing and Israel amid the backdrop of the Israel-Hamas war, in which more than 34,000 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip.

Protests spread quickly last week on campuses from coast to coast, resulting in mass arrests and crackdowns.

“While the University will not divest from Israel,” it offered to create an expedited timeline for a review of new proposals from students by the school's Advisory Committee for Socially Responsible Investing,  which explores divestment, Shafik said.

“The University also offered to publish a process for students to access a list of Columbia’s direct investment holdings, and to increase the frequency of updates to that list of holdings,” she added.

Shafik said the university had offered “to make investments in health and education in Gaza, including supporting early childhood development and support for displaced scholars." She urged those in the encampment to voluntarily disperse.

One of those suspended by Columbia for protests is undergraduate student Fadi Shuman, 31, though he was suspended before Monday’s deadline for a previous encampment.

A first-generation American born to Palestinian parents, Shuman says he is low income and may not be able to return to school.

“I don’t know if I’m going to be able to go to school again. I don’t know I’ll be able to afford to go back to another school again,” Shuman said.

“I can’t say it’s like easy, but I know what I’m doing is right and it’s something I’m willing to sacrifice,” he said.

The notices handed out Monday, viewed by NBC News and issued to protest participants that morning, asked protesters to identify themselves to a university official and sign a form agreeing to alternative resolution for the university policy violations that the encampment posed.

Those who sign are eligible to complete the semester in good standing and will not be placed on suspension if they adhere to university policies. 

The university also said in the notice it would offer “an alternative venue for demonstrations after the exam period and commencement have concluded.”

Columbia University Apartheid Divest, the coalition organizing the encampment protest, said in a statement Monday: "These repulsive scare tactics mean nothing compared to the deaths of over 34,000 Palestinians. We will not move until Columbia meets our demands or we are moved by force."

The group criticized the university's "threat to mass suspend, evict and possibly expel students" with just hours' notice as a violation of the school's rules.

The group also condemned paper notices the university issued at the encampment as "reminiscent of the flyers the Israeli army launched from the sky to Gazans."

At a Columbia rally by the coalition around 2 p.m., student organizer Sueda Polat said: “The university has conducted itself with obstinacy and arrogance, refusing to be flexible on some of our most basic points.”

“We were engaging in good faith negotiations until the administration cut them off under threat of suspensions. Where we asked for amnesty, they gave us more discipline,” Polat said.

Protest organizers also criticized Shafik's claim that the university had “constructive dialogue” with protesters, noting Columbia refused to give a commitment that student divestment proposals would be binding, and they described Shafik's offering of childhood education programs for Palestinians as "nothing more than bribery of the student movement."

Unrest and protests continue at colleges around the country. Police at the University of Texas at Austin on Monday made arrests and dismantled an encampment set up to protest the war in Gaza, university officials said. There were also arrests at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Hundreds of protesters marched through the campus of the University of Missouri in Columbia, NBC affiliate KOMU of Columbia reported , but no arrests were reported.

Northwestern University in Illinois said it reached an agreement with demonstrators that will bring an end to tents on Deering Meadow, and the Anti-Defamation League for the Midwest criticized that deal as rewarding bad behavior and it accused the encampment of being a "platform for antisemitism."

At Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, police made arrests after the school said that people refused to gather their belongings and leave, the university said . It's finals week there, it noted. Police used a tear gas-like substance, NBC affiliate WWBT of Richmond reported . Video showed officers with riot shields and helmets as protesters held a makeshift line of wooden pallets.

Shuman, the Columbia protester previously suspended, said it’s hard having Palestinian roots but unable to change the situation.

“My whole life, I feel like growing up as a Palestinian in America you’re always living with this — whether you know it or not — it’s just survivor’s guilt,” Shuman said.

“I’m over here, but not able to, like, actually do something,” he said.
