What does a one page essay look like? If you’re a student, you’ve probably asked yourself this question. 1 page essays are usually assigned to check one’s ability to formulate their thoughts. A one page essay word count is 200 to 250 words (12 pt double-spaced). A paper of 1 page usually consists of 2 to 3 paragraphs.

College essays are an entirely new type of writing for high school seniors. For that reason, many students are confused about proper formatting and essay structure. Should you double-space or single-space? Do you need a title? What kind of narrative style is best-suited for your topic?

In this post, we’ll be going over proper college essay format, traditional and unconventional essay structures (plus sample essays!), and which structure might work best for you. 

General College Essay Formatting Guidelines

How you format your essay will depend on whether you’re submitting in a text box, or attaching a document. We’ll go over the different best practices for both, but regardless of how you’re submitting, here are some general formatting tips:

  • There’s no need for a title; it takes up unnecessary space and eats into your word count
  • Stay within the word count as much as possible (+/- 10% of the upper limit). For further discussion on college essay length, see our post How Long Should Your College Essay Be?
  • Indent or double space to separate paragraphs clearly

If you’re submitting in a text box:

  • Avoid italics and bold, since formatting often doesn’t transfer over in text boxes
  • Be careful with essays meant to be a certain shape (like a balloon); text boxes will likely not respect that formatting. Beyond that, this technique can also seem gimmicky, so proceed with caution
  • Make sure that paragraphs are clearly separated, as text boxes can also undo indents and double spacing

If you’re attaching a document:

  • Use a standard font and size like Times New Roman, 12 point
  • Make your lines 1.5-spaced or double-spaced
  • Use 1-inch margins
  • Save as a PDF since it can’t be edited. This also prevents any formatting issues that come with Microsoft Word, since older versions are sometimes incompatible with the newer formatting
  • Number each page with your last name in the header or footer (like “Smith 1”)
  • Pay extra attention to any word limits, as you won’t be cut off automatically, unlike with most text boxes

Conventional College Essay Structures

Now that we’ve gone over the logistical aspects of your essay, let’s talk about how you should structure your writing. There are three traditional college essay structures. They are:

  • In-the-moment narrative
  • Narrative told over an extended period of time
  • Series of anecdotes, or montage

Let’s go over what each one is exactly, and take a look at some real essays using these structures.

1. In-the-moment narrative

This is where you tell the story one moment at a time, sharing the events as they occur. In the moment narrative is a powerful essay format, as your reader experiences the events, your thoughts, and your emotions with you . This structure is ideal for a specific experience involving extensive internal dialogue, emotions, and reflections.

Here’s an example:

The morning of the Model United Nation conference, I walked into Committee feeling confident about my research. We were simulating the Nuremberg Trials – a series of post-World War II proceedings for war crimes – and my portfolio was of the Soviet Judge Major General Iona Nikitchenko. Until that day, the infamous Nazi regime had only been a chapter in my history textbook; however, the conference’s unveiling of each defendant’s crimes brought those horrors to life. The previous night, I had organized my research, proofread my position paper and gone over Judge Nikitchenko’s pertinent statements. I aimed to find the perfect balance between his stance and my own.

As I walked into committee anticipating a battle of wits, my director abruptly called out to me. “I’m afraid we’ve received a late confirmation from another delegate who will be representing Judge Nikitchenko. You, on the other hand, are now the defense attorney, Otto Stahmer.” Everyone around me buzzed around the room in excitement, coordinating with their allies and developing strategies against their enemies, oblivious to the bomb that had just dropped on me. I felt frozen in my tracks, and it seemed that only rage against the careless delegate who had confirmed her presence so late could pull me out of my trance. After having spent a month painstakingly crafting my verdicts and gathering evidence against the Nazis, I now needed to reverse my stance only three hours before the first session.

Gradually, anger gave way to utter panic. My research was fundamental to my performance, and without it, I knew I could add little to the Trials. But confident in my ability, my director optimistically recommended constructing an impromptu defense. Nervously, I began my research anew. Despite feeling hopeless, as I read through the prosecution’s arguments, I uncovered substantial loopholes. I noticed a lack of conclusive evidence against the defendants and certain inconsistencies in testimonies. My discovery energized me, inspiring me to revisit the historical overview in my conference “Background Guide” and to search the web for other relevant articles. Some Nazi prisoners had been treated as “guilty” before their court dates. While I had brushed this information under the carpet while developing my position as a judge, it now became the focus of my defense. I began scratching out a new argument, centered on the premise that the allied countries had violated the fundamental rule that, a defendant was “not guilty” until proven otherwise.

At the end of the three hours, I felt better prepared. The first session began, and with bravado, I raised my placard to speak. Microphone in hand, I turned to face my audience. “Greetings delegates. I, Otto Stahmer would like to…….” I suddenly blanked. Utter dread permeated my body as I tried to recall my thoughts in vain. “Defence Attorney, Stahmer we’ll come back to you,” my Committee Director broke the silence as I tottered back to my seat, flushed with embarrassment. Despite my shame, I was undeterred. I needed to vindicate my director’s faith in me. I pulled out my notes, refocused, and began outlining my arguments in a more clear and direct manner. Thereafter, I spoke articulately, confidently putting forth my points. I was overjoyed when Secretariat members congratulated me on my fine performance.

Going into the conference, I believed that preparation was the key to success. I wouldn’t say I disagree with that statement now, but I believe adaptability is equally important. My ability to problem-solve in the face of an unforeseen challenge proved advantageous in the art of diplomacy. Not only did this experience transform me into a confident and eloquent delegate at that conference, but it also helped me become a more flexible and creative thinker in a variety of other capacities. Now that I know I can adapt under pressure, I look forward to engaging in activities that will push me to be even quicker on my feet.

This essay is an excellent example of in-the-moment narration. The student openly shares their internal state with us — we feel their anger and panic upon the reversal of roles. We empathize with their emotions of “utter dread” and embarrassment when they’re unable to speak. 

For in-the-moment essays, overloading on descriptions is a common mistake students make. This writer provides just the right amount of background and details to help us understand the situation, however, and balances out the actual event with reflection on the significance of this experience. 

One main area of improvement is that the writer sometimes makes explicit statements that could be better illustrated through their thoughts, actions, and feelings. For instance, they say they “spoke articulately” after recovering from their initial inability to speak, and they also claim that adaptability has helped them in other situations. This is not as engaging as actual examples that convey the same meaning. Still, this essay overall is a strong example of in-the-moment narration, and gives us a relatable look into the writer’s life and personality.

2. Narrative told over an extended period of time

In this essay structure, you share a story that takes place across several different experiences. This narrative style is well-suited for any story arc with multiple parts. If you want to highlight your development over time, you might consider this structure. 

When I was younger, I was adamant that no two foods on my plate touch. As a result, I often used a second plate to prevent such an atrocity. In many ways, I learned to separate different things this way from my older brothers, Nate and Rob. Growing up, I idolized both of them. Nate was a performer, and I insisted on arriving early to his shows to secure front row seats, refusing to budge during intermission for fear of missing anything. Rob was a three-sport athlete, and I attended his games religiously, waving worn-out foam cougar paws and cheering until my voice was hoarse. My brothers were my role models. However, while each was talented, neither was interested in the other’s passion. To me, they represented two contrasting ideals of what I could become: artist or athlete. I believed I had to choose.

And for a long time, I chose athlete. I played soccer, basketball, and lacrosse and viewed myself exclusively as an athlete, believing the arts were not for me. I conveniently overlooked that since the age of five, I had been composing stories for my family for Christmas, gifts that were as much for me as them, as I loved writing. So when in tenth grade, I had the option of taking a creative writing class, I was faced with a question: could I be an athlete and a writer? After much debate, I enrolled in the class, feeling both apprehensive and excited. When I arrived on the first day of school, my teacher, Ms. Jenkins, asked us to write down our expectations for the class. After a few minutes, eraser shavings stubbornly sunbathing on my now-smudged paper, I finally wrote, “I do not expect to become a published writer from this class. I just want this to be a place where I can write freely.”

Although the purpose of the class never changed for me, on the third “submission day,” – our time to submit writing to upcoming contests and literary magazines – I faced a predicament. For the first two submission days, I had passed the time editing earlier pieces, eventually (pretty quickly) resorting to screen snake when hopelessness made the words look like hieroglyphics. I must not have been as subtle as I thought, as on the third of these days, Ms. Jenkins approached me. After shifting from excuse to excuse as to why I did not submit my writing, I finally recognized the real reason I had withheld my work: I was scared. I did not want to be different, and I did not want to challenge not only others’ perceptions of me, but also my own. I yielded to Ms. Jenkin’s pleas and sent one of my pieces to an upcoming contest.

By the time the letter came, I had already forgotten about the contest. When the flimsy white envelope arrived in the mail, I was shocked and ecstatic to learn that I had received 2nd place in a nationwide writing competition. The next morning, however, I discovered Ms. Jenkins would make an announcement to the whole school exposing me as a poet. I decided to own this identity and embrace my friends’ jokes and playful digs, and over time, they have learned to accept and respect this part of me. I have since seen more boys at my school identifying themselves as writers or artists.

I no longer see myself as an athlete and a poet independently, but rather I see these two aspects forming a single inseparable identity – me. Despite their apparent differences, these two disciplines are quite similar, as each requires creativity and devotion. I am still a poet when I am lacing up my cleats for soccer practice and still an athlete when I am building metaphors in the back of my mind – and I have realized ice cream and gummy bears taste pretty good together.

The timeline of this essay spans from the writer’s childhood all the way to sophomore year, but we only see key moments along this journey. First, we get context for why the writer thought he had to choose one identity: his older brothers had very distinct interests. Then, we learn about the student’s 10th grade creative writing class, writing contest, and results of the contest. Finally, the essay covers the writers’ embarrassment of his identity as a poet, to gradual acceptance and pride in that identity. 

This essay is a great example of a narrative told over an extended period of time. It’s highly personal and reflective, as the piece shares the writer’s conflicting feelings, and takes care to get to the root of those feelings. Furthermore, the overarching story is that of a personal transformation and development, so it’s well-suited to this essay structure.

3. Series of anecdotes, or montage

This essay structure allows you to focus on the most important experiences of a single storyline, or it lets you feature multiple (not necessarily related) stories that highlight your personality. Montage is a structure where you piece together separate scenes to form a whole story. This technique is most commonly associated with film. Just envision your favorite movie—it likely is a montage of various scenes that may not even be chronological. 

Night had robbed the academy of its daytime colors, yet there was comfort in the dim lights that cast shadows of our advances against the bare studio walls. Silhouettes of roundhouse kicks, spin crescent kicks, uppercuts and the occasional butterfly kick danced while we sparred. She approached me, eyes narrowed with the trace of a smirk challenging me. “Ready spar!” Her arm began an upward trajectory targeting my shoulder, a common first move. I sidestepped — only to almost collide with another flying fist. Pivoting my right foot, I snapped my left leg, aiming my heel at her midsection. The center judge raised one finger. 

There was no time to celebrate, not in the traditional sense at least. Master Pollard gave a brief command greeted with a unanimous “Yes, sir” and the thud of 20 hands dropping-down-and-giving-him-30, while the “winners” celebrated their victory with laps as usual. 

Three years ago, seven-thirty in the evening meant I was a warrior. It meant standing up straighter, pushing a little harder, “Yes, sir” and “Yes, ma’am”, celebrating birthdays by breaking boards, never pointing your toes, and familiarity. Three years later, seven-thirty in the morning meant I was nervous. 

The room is uncomfortably large. The sprung floor soaks up the checkerboard of sunlight piercing through the colonial windows. The mirrored walls further illuminate the studio and I feel the light scrutinizing my sorry attempts at a pas de bourrée , while capturing the organic fluidity of the dancers around me. “ Chassé en croix, grand battement, pique, pirouette.” I follow the graceful limbs of the woman in front of me, her legs floating ribbons, as she executes what seems to be a perfect ronds de jambes. Each movement remains a negotiation. With admirable patience, Ms. Tan casts me a sympathetic glance.   

There is no time to wallow in the misery that is my right foot. Taekwondo calls for dorsiflexion; pointed toes are synonymous with broken toes. My thoughts drag me into a flashback of the usual response to this painful mistake: “You might as well grab a tutu and head to the ballet studio next door.” Well, here I am Master Pollard, unfortunately still following your orders to never point my toes, but no longer feeling the satisfaction that comes with being a third degree black belt with 5 years of experience quite literally under her belt. It’s like being a white belt again — just in a leotard and ballet slippers. 

But the appetite for new beginnings that brought me here doesn’t falter. It is only reinforced by the classical rendition of “Dancing Queen” that floods the room and the ghost of familiarity that reassures me that this new beginning does not and will not erase the past. After years spent at the top, it’s hard to start over. But surrendering what you are only leads you to what you may become. In Taekwondo, we started each class reciting the tenets: honor, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, courage, humility, and knowledge, and I have never felt that I embodied those traits more so than when I started ballet. 

The thing about change is that it eventually stops making things so different. After nine different schools, four different countries, three different continents, fluency in Tamil, Norwegian, and English, there are more blurred lines than there are clear fragments. My life has not been a tactfully executed, gold medal-worthy Taekwondo form with each movement defined, nor has it been a series of frappés performed by a prima ballerina with each extension identical and precise, but thankfully it has been like the dynamics of a spinning back kick, fluid, and like my chances of landing a pirouette, unpredictable. 

This essay takes a few different anecdotes and weaves them into a coherent narrative about the writer’s penchant for novel experiences. We’re plunged into her universe, in the middle of her Taekwondo spar, three years before the present day. She then transitions into a scene in a ballet studio, present day. By switching from past tense to present tense, the writer clearly demarcates this shift in time. 

The parallel use of the spoken phrase “Point” in the essay ties these two experiences together. The writer also employs a flashback to Master Pollard’s remark about “grabbing a tutu” and her habit of dorsiflexing her toes, which further cements the connection between these anecdotes. 

While some of the descriptions are a little wordy, the piece is well-executed overall, and is a stellar example of the montage structure. The two anecdotes are seamlessly intertwined, and they both clearly illustrate the student’s determination, dedication, reflectiveness, and adaptability. The writer also concludes the essay with a larger reflection on her life, many moves, and multiple languages. 

Unconventional College Essay Structures

Unconventional essay structures are any that don’t fit into the categories above. These tend to be higher risk, as it’s easier to turn off the admissions officer, but they’re also higher reward if executed correctly. 

There are endless possibilities for unconventional structures, but most fall under one of two categories:

1. Playing with essay format

Instead of choosing a traditional narrative format, you might take a more creative route to showcase your interests, writing your essay:

  • As a movie script
  • With a creative visual format (such as creating a visual pattern with the spaces between your sentences forming a picture)
  • As a two-sided Lincoln-Douglas debate
  • As a legal brief
  • Using song lyrics

2. Linguistic techniques

You could also play with the actual language and sentence structure of your essay, writing it:

  • In iambic pentameter
  • Partially in your mother tongue
  • In code or a programming language

These linguistic techniques are often hybrid, where you write some of the essay with the linguistic variation, then write more of an explanation in English.

Under no circumstances should you feel pressured to use an unconventional structure. Trying to force something unconventional will only hurt your chances. That being said, if a creative structure comes naturally to you, suits your personality, and works with the content of your essay — go for that structure!

"One" may be the loneliest number according to the popular song lyrics. However, if you are writing an assigned one-page essay, the page count needs to stay at one. The short length may sound appealing when your teacher or professor assigns you a one-page essay to write for homework. A one-page essay can be as equally challenging to draft as a longer piece of writing. The tricky thing about writing a one-page essay is that the essay must still contain all the major structural components of a normal-length essay, such as the introduction and conclusion. Writing succinct supporting paragraphs and concluding your essay in a concise way is imperative. This one-page writing challenge can be overcome with careful planning and strategizing.

Instructions

Read your teacher's instructions carefully as they will tell you exactly what he is looking for in your paper as well as how your paper will be graded. For instance, he may deduct points for being slightly under or over the one-page requirement. There may also be further rubric instructions to follow as you write the paper like the writing style guide.

Next, select the overall topic you want to write about. You can then choose to build your thesis statement based on the argument, stance or assertion you want your paper to take. Outline the main points of your topic being careful to not select points you might have a hard time explaining in only a few sentences.

Introduction

Draft your introduction, saving your thesis statement for the last sentence of the introduction for impact. Start the introduction with something catchy to engage the reader into wanting to read the rest of your essay. Some students prefer to leave writing the introduction for their last step and write it once the rest of the paper is drafted.

Compose Essay Body

Compose the body of the essay which include the supporting paragraphs. Make sure the paragraphs relate to the thesis statement and also transition smoothly. Write each paragraph as if it could stand alone in the essay, being sure to introduce the issue and complete the thought with a closing sentence.

Finally, write the conclusion to wrap up the paper. Summarize the main points discussed in the body and briefly explain how the thesis statement proves true given the information given in the essay. Remember, this is your first draft so you might expect the draft essay to run longer than one page initially.

Edit your essay by trimming away any fluff or excess words. Condense words and sentences to shorten the length without weakening your paper. Do as much cutting as you can and then recheck the length. If it is still over one-page long, you may need to consider whether you are trying to cram in too many points. Do not try to cheat the assignment by minimizing your computer font or reducing the margins of your paper so that you can fit more words on each line. Most likely, your professor is keen to these tricks and will require you to use type 12 font with one-inch left and right margins.

Review your paper draft for punctuation, grammatical or other errors that might cost you points. Make sure the essay is written in an informational and academic tone and check to make you have followed your professor's instructions exactly.

Figuring out your college essay can be one of the most difficult parts of applying to college. Even once you've read the prompt and picked a topic, you might wonder: if you write too much or too little, will you blow your chance of admission? How long should a college essay be?

Whether you're a terse writer or a loquacious one, we can advise you on college essay length. In this guide, we'll cover what the standard college essay length is, how much word limits matter, and what to do if you aren't sure how long a specific essay should be.

How Long Is a College Essay? First, Check the Word Limit

You might be used to turning in your writing assignments on a page-limit basis (for example, a 10-page paper). While some colleges provide page limits for their college essays, most use a word limit instead. This makes sure there's a standard length for all the essays that a college receives, regardless of formatting or font.

In the simplest terms, your college essay should be pretty close to, but not exceeding, the word limit in length. Think within 50 words as the lower bound, with the word limit as the upper bound. So for a 500-word limit essay, try to get somewhere between 450-500 words. If they give you a range, stay within that range.

College essay prompts usually provide the word limit right in the prompt or in the instructions.

For example, the University of Illinois says :

"You'll answer two to three prompts as part of your application. The questions you'll answer will depend on whether you're applying to a major or to our undeclared program , and if you've selected a second choice . Each response should be approximately 150 words."

As exemplified by the University of Illinois, the shortest word limits for college essays are usually around 150 words (less than half a single-spaced page). Rarely will you see a word limit higher than around 650 words (over one single-spaced page). College essays are usually pretty short: between 150 and 650 words. Admissions officers have to read a lot of them, after all!

How Flexible Is the Word Limit?

But how flexible is the word limit? What if your poignant anecdote is just 10 words too long—or 100 too short?

Can I Go Over the Word Limit?

If you are attaching a document and you need one or two extra words, you can probably get away with exceeding the word limit by such a small amount. Some colleges will actually tell you that exceeding the word limit by 1-2 words is fine. However, I advise against exceeding the word limit unless it's explicitly allowed for a few reasons:

First, you might not be able to. If you have to copy-paste it into a text box, your essay might get cut off and you'll have to trim it down anyway.

If you exceed the word limit in a noticeable way, the admissions counselor may just stop reading your essay past that point. This is not good for you.

Following directions is actually a very important part of the college application process. You need to follow directions to get your letters of recommendation, upload your essays, send supplemental materials, get your test scores sent, and so on and so forth. So it's just a good general rule to follow whatever instructions you've been given by the institution. Better safe than sorry!

Can I Go Under the Word Limit?

If you can truly get your point across well beneath the word limit, it's probably fine. Brevity is not necessarily a bad thing in writing just so long as you are clear, cogent, and communicate what you want to.

However, most college essays have pretty tight word limits anyways. So if you're writing 300 words for an essay with a 500-word limit, ask yourself: is there anything more you could say to elaborate on or support your points? Consult with a parent, friend, or teacher on where you could elaborate with more detail or expand your points.

Also, if the college gives you a word range, you absolutely need to at least hit the bottom end of the range. So if you get a range from the institution, like 400-500 words, you need to write at least 400 words. If you write less, it will come across like you have nothing to say, which is not an impression you want to give.

What If There Is No Word Limit?

Some colleges don't give you a word limit for one or more of your essay prompts. This can be a little stressful, but the prompts generally fall into a few categories:

Writing Sample

Some colleges don't provide a hard-and-fast word limit because they want a writing sample from one of your classes. In this case, a word limit would be very limiting to you in terms of which assignments you could select from.

For an example of this kind of prompt, check out essay Option B at Amherst :

"Submit a graded paper from your junior or senior year that best represents your writing skills and analytical abilities. We are particularly interested in your ability to construct a tightly reasoned, persuasive argument that calls upon literary, sociological or historical evidence. You should NOT submit a laboratory report, journal entry, creative writing sample or in-class essay."

While there is usually no word limit per se, colleges sometimes provide a general page guideline for writing samples. In the FAQ for Option B , Amherst clarifies, "There is no hard-and-fast rule for official page limit. Typically, we anticipate a paper of 4-5 pages will provide adequate length to demonstrate your analytical abilities. Somewhat longer papers can also be submitted, but in most cases should not exceed 8-10 pages."

So even though there's no word limit, they'd like somewhere in the 4-10 pages range. High school students are not usually writing papers that are longer than 10 pages anyways, so that isn't very limiting.

Implicit Length Guideline

Sometimes, while there's no word (or even page) limit, there's still an implicit length guideline. What do I mean by this?

See, for example, this Western Washington University prompt :

“Describe one or more activities you have been involved in that have been particularly meaningful. What does your involvement say about the communities, identities or causes that are important to you?”

While there’s no page or word limit listed here, further down on page the ‘essay tips’ section explains that “ most essay responses are about 500 words, ” though “this is only a recommendation, not a firm limit.” This gives you an idea of what’s reasonable. A little longer or shorter than 500 words would be appropriate here. That’s what I mean by an “implicit” word limit—there is a reasonable length you could go to within the boundaries of the prompt.

But what's the proper coffee-to-paragraph ratio?

Treasure Hunt

There is also the classic "treasure hunt" prompt. No, it's not a prompt about a treasure hunt. It's a prompt where there are no length guidelines given, but if you hunt around on the rest of the website you can find length guidelines.

For example, the University of Chicago provides seven "Extended Essay" prompts . You must write an essay in response to one prompt of your choosing, but nowhere on the page is there any guidance about word count or page limit.

However, many colleges provide additional details about their expectations for application materials, including essays, on FAQ pages, which is true of the University of Chicago. On the school’s admissions Frequently Asked Questions page , they provide the following length guidelines for the supplemental essays: 

“We suggest that you note any word limits for Coalition or Common Application essays; however, there are no strict word limits on the UChicago Supplement essays. For the extended essay (where you choose one of several prompts), we suggest that you aim for around 650 words. While we won't, as a rule, stop reading after 650 words, we're only human and cannot promise that an overly wordy essay will hold our attention indefinitely. For the “Why UChicago?” essay, we suggest about 250-500 words. The ideas in your writing matter more than the exact number of words you use!”

So there you go! You want to be (loosely) in the realm of 650 for the extended essay, and 250-500 words for the “Why UChicago?” essay.

Help! There Really Is No Guidance on Length

If you really can't find any length guidelines anywhere on the admissions website and you're at a loss, I advise calling the admissions office. They may not be able to give you an exact number (in fact, they probably won't), but they will probably at least be able to tell you how long most of the essays they see are. (And keep you from writing a panicked, 20-page dissertation about your relationship with your dog).

In general, 500 words or so is pretty safe for a college essay. It's a fairly standard word limit length, in fact. (And if you're wondering, that's about a page and a half double-spaced.) 500 words is long enough to develop a basic idea while still getting a point across quickly—important when admissions counselors have thousands of essays to read!

The Final Word: How Long Should a College Essay Be?

The best college essay length is usually pretty straightforward: you want to be right under or at the provided word limit. If you go substantially past the word limit, you risk having your essay cut off by an online application form or having the admissions officer just not finish it. And if you're too far under the word limit, you may not be elaborating enough.

What if there is no word limit? Then how long should a college essay be? In general, around 500 words is a pretty safe approximate word amount for a college essay—it's one of the most common word limits, after all!

Here's guidance for special cases and hunting down word limits:

If it's a writing sample of your graded academic work, the length either doesn't matter or there should be some loose page guidelines.

There also may be implicit length guidelines. For example, if a prompt says to write three paragraphs, you'll know that writing six sentences is definitely too short, and two single-spaced pages is definitely too long.

You might not be able to find length guidelines in the prompt, but you could still hunt them up elsewhere on the website. Try checking FAQs or googling your chosen school name with "admissions essay word limit."

If there really is no word limit, you can call the school to try to get some guidance.

With this advice, you can be sure you've got the right college essay length on lockdown!

How to Create a One-Pager: A Guide for Our End-of-Semester Challenge

Tips, links and encouragement for expressing yourself creatively on the Times topic of your choice.

Are you participating in our one-pager challenge ? If so, you might already know you’re allowed to choose any article, opinion essay , video , graph , photo collection or podcast from The New York Times that was published this year, and that you can respond to it in almost any way you like. All you have to do is show us — via words and images — how you engaged with the ideas and information in the piece.

But where do you begin? Here are some steps you can take to find a meaningful piece, review it carefully and react to it authentically, and then figure out how to create an illustrated one-page response that expresses what you’d most like to say.

Here are the steps:

1. choose something from the new york times., 2. make notes about your thoughts and reactions., 3. decide what you want to say., 4. check out some teen-created examples., 5. design your one-pager..

If your family, school or local library has a subscription to The Times, whether print or digital, you might begin by exploring and saving the stories that jump out at you. Here is a guide we created in 2020, “ 21 Things Teenagers Can Do With a New York Times Subscription ,” that can offer ideas and introduce you to corners of nytimes.com that you might not know existed.

If you don’t have a subscription, you can explore via The Learning Network, since we publish many daily features, all of which link to free Times content. (Keep in mind that you need to choose something published in 2023 or early 2024 if you are participating in our challenge, which runs from Dec. 6 to Jan. 10.)

Here are some options:

We have created a special collection just for this contest. Our latest edition of Teenagers in The Times contains over 75 links to articles that published this fall about young athletes, artists, activists and more. There is something on the list for everyone.

Search our site, or scroll through its features, looking for topics you care about. For instance, if you start with our writing prompts you’ll find pieces on fandoms , friendship , learning from failure , phones in school , ChatGPT , mental health , gun violence , celebrity relationships and much, much more.

Or, check out our multimedia offerings to find films about the joys and challenges of growing up , stuttering , how to be a good listener , and what it means to be young, Black and queer today . Or, find graphs about football and C.T.E ., electric cars , Spelling Bee words or global temperatures .

Once you find a topic, click in to find the related Times piece. We don’t care what you choose, or whether you loved it or hated it. We care about your engagement with the ideas and information.

So whether you were moved by an article, enlightened by an podcast, irked by an editorial or inspired by a video, find something in The Times that genuinely interests you and explore why, as honestly and originally as you can.

Before you decide what belongs on your one-pager, read, watch or listen to the piece several times. As you go, make notes about your thoughts and reactions.

Our post Annotating to Engage, Analyze, Connect and Create , published in 2015 back when The Learning Network was a blog, offers many ideas for creative ways to do this, but here are some starting questions:

What do you notice?

What do you wonder?

What words, lines or details jump out at you? Why?

What emotions are you feeling as you explore the text?

How does this text connect to you or to your world?

How does it connect to other things you have read, seen or heard?

What do you admire about this piece? Does it offer you any lessons for something you might want to create?

Is there anything you don’t like about this piece? What and why?

What, if anything, is missing from this piece? Why?

What is your overall reaction to it? Why?

After you’ve noted your first reactions, step back and think about your selection some more. You might discuss it with others, or click on any links within it to read related information. You might follow up on some of the questions it raised for you, or see if other news sources have covered the topic differently. Or, you might focus on how the piece changed your understanding of an issue or idea, and why. What might you do with this new information?

Now the creative fun begins. Read over your notes and annotations and decide what is most important or interesting for you to capture about your selection.

Here are two ways to think about what belongs on your one-pager.

Pick responses that all follow a theme:

Let’s say you’re a video game fanatic and skimmed The Times looking for news you could use. Maybe you read “ 12 Video Games Releasing This Fall ” and learned about some you had never heard of — or remembered some of your favorite games of the past. Or, maybe you were fascinated by “ Russia Takes Its Ukraine Information War Into Video Games ” and how propaganda is appearing in Minecraft and other popular games and discussion groups. Perhaps you’ve even started to notice some of that propaganda in the games you play. Or, maybe you’re fascinated by the connection between gaming and A.I., so you devoured this article about how A.I. can help you design your characters . Whichever of these articles you chose, your one pager could focus on what you learned from it, or how it helps you as a player, or what you now understand about how the video game industry is changing.

Or, let’s say you read a Modern Love essay , and most of your responses are about the language you admired, the flashes of humor in the piece, the introduction of words that were new to you, and your observations about the author’s use of point of view. Your one-pager might then be focused on the writer’s craft and what you can learn from it for your own work. You might even try imitating a mentor sentence from the essay in a section of your one-pager.

Or, pick a range of your most interesting, original, insightful or useful responses:

Maybe your responses were all over the place. Maybe you are a TikTok dance enthusiast, so you read the article about the evolution of dance trends on the app, and how influential they’ve been. That might remind you of other TikTok dance videos, past or present — and you might then be able to apply some of what was in the Times piece to those. Maybe you think the Times reporter missed some key information that should have been in the article. Or maybe you clicked on the links in the piece and have been captivated by information about new artists, dance subcultures, or some of the issues around creative crediting that have arisen. Any and all of these thoughts and observations can lead to great responses, and become part of your one-pager.

“How to Save Yourself From ‘Task Paralysis’” is by Vivian Wang, a 15-year-old from India, who wrote in her accompanying process statement, “My goal was to make my one-pager focused, like an infographic, but with the playful energy of a children’s book.”

Did she succeed? Which elements here are more “infographic” and which are more “children’s book”?

Here are some more things to notice about her work, and some questions for you.

Things to notice: This student chose a piece that was “news she could use” — information applicable to her own life — then she made her thinking about it visible through word and image. She summarized key points from the piece, then applied them to her own struggles, pulling out the sentences and details that she wanted to remember. She illustrated each segment with appealing animal characters that get across the emotions the article explores — worry and confusion, but also relief.

Questions for you: What New York Times pieces would constitute news you could use? Perhaps something from the Health section ? Tips and tricks from the Gameplay section if you enjoy word games? Ideas from the Food section if you cook? How can you both impart what you learned and show how it connects to your own life?

Below, three more of our winners, with their own “Things to notice” and “Questions for you.” But we encourage you to look through all 15 and choose the ones you like best. Then, drill down to try to name exactly what each student did that you admire. Finally, ask yourself questions about how you could borrow those ideas and strategies for your own work.

Things to notice: “How Wild Turkeys Find Love” was one of the few laugh-out-loud submissions we received, and that alone moved it forward in the judging rounds. But look closely, because everything about this submission works, starting with the cleverness of Kylie Doherty’s method. By taking lines from a science article about the mating habits of turkeys and translating them into comic illustrations, this student both surfaced important facts in the article and took the information in an imaginative new direction. Even the “new word I learned” is funny, as is (of course) the related illustration. Note the attention to detail, too, like the hearts and turkey tracks that form the border.

Questions for you: Can you make a comic out of a Times article? As you can see from this one, your drawings don’t have to be elaborate. Try illustrating scenes that express some of your favorite facts from a science, politics, sports or arts-related article. Don’t be afraid to express your sense of humor!

Things to notice: This one-pager about parkour-activists marries the content of the original article and the visual display of that information so perfectly that it’s a pleasure to follow this student's thinking. And yet, as dynamic as the illustrations are, the comments are just as interesting. Throughout, Mythri Margam engages with both philosophical and practical questions about the article, coming to the conclusion that this is a “noble cause.”

Questions for you: Does the article you’ve chosen lend itself to a dramatic visual display? If so, how can you choose a color palette and create illustrations that are equally dramatic and help tell the story for you? As for your written comments, what big-picture questions does the Times piece raise for you? How did you wrestle with them as you read?

Things to notice: This one-pager effectively summarizes a problem and helps us focus on the important questions around it. The illustrations are simple but effective, and show that you don’t have to have spent hours in art classes to express your ideas visually. The use of shape and color alone help our eyes move around the page. But notice that Shannon Hitscherich’s most elaborate comment is about what she feels the Times piece is missing. That’s a reaction our judges especially admire, both because we know it demands close reading, and because it always makes us think.

Questions for you: If you’re unused to expressing yourself visually, we have three questions. 1. What colors and simple shapes might express what you want to say and help your words pop? 2. Do you know another student who can help? You are allowed to work in pairs for this contest. 3. What digital tools can you use? If you look at the full list of last year’s winners, you’ll see that several are created that way. (Just make sure you follow our rules about copyright, and note that we do not allow A.I.-created images.)

Finally, below is a slide show of fun one-pagers made in 2022 by students at Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn, Ill. Teachers there regularly bring their students to respond to our writing prompts, so we emailed the school that fall and asked them to do us a favor. We wanted a few teenagers to try our challenge before we made the first one public, and we wondered if any students there might volunteer. A few who had never done a one-pager before raised their hands, and, though their teachers offered this as an optional final assignment, they did not otherwise guide it. We love all the different directions these students’ work took. Which inspire you most? Why?

Now that you have seen several examples, you’re ready to create your own. You are welcome to work with a partner, but each of you can submit only once.

As you’ve seen from the examples in Step 4, you do not have to have a background in art to make an excellent one-pager. Stick figures, simple graphics and the use of color can do all the visual work needed to highlight your thoughts. What we’ll be focusing on is your engagement with the ideas and information in the text. Use the space on your page to make visible what happened to you as you engaged with your selection and made meaning from it.

Here are a few questions to help you plan:

How can you divide up your page to accommodate everything you want to say?

How can you use elements of design like color, shape and line to emphasize your ideas?

Will you have one central illustration, or several smaller ones?

How can you make the most of space like the borders of the page, but use it in such a way that your work is still legible?

How does this one-pager trace your thinking about the topic and show highlights from it? How does it show connections between those ideas?

How to Write a One Page Paper in APA Style

Writing a one-page paper in APA format is not an especially easy task, but it is indeed possible if you don't count the title page and references. If you must, then the paper has to contain all four major elements on one page. An APA-style paper consists of a title page with a running head, an abstract, the body of the paper with its various sections and/or in-text citations and/or footers and finally, the reference page. Type it in 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with one-inch margins on all sides.

Add the title at the top of the page in the header section with the words "Running head:". The title, in all caps with no bold font or typeface, is simply the topic or subject of the paper with the name of the writer and the university/entity for whom the paper is written. Single space this section at the top of the page and center it.

Type or write out the abstract. Center and bold the word "abstract." If all of the main elements of the APA-style paper are going to fit on one page, the abstract (summary) of the paper should be no more than two to three sentences long. If the mandatory "one-page" paper is not literal, then the abstract and the body are the only parts that will go on the single page. The title page with a "running" head and the reference page noted below can be separate for a total of three pages.

Type or write the body of the APA paper. The title should be repeated here, centered and in bold. It should consist of no more than two paragraphs, including in-text citations to be referenced in the footnote of the paper. There will be no room for sections in a one-page paper. Also, the resources should be narrowed down to only one of two references.

Reference the in-text citation or citations in the footnote section of the page or paper. You can single space the references with a double space between them and reverse indented. If the one-page mandate is not literal, then you can exchange the footnotes for a reference page, but you must still reverse indent them. Center the word "References" and bold it if you choose.

The length of an academic essay varies depending on your level and subject of study, departmental guidelines, and specific course requirements. In general, an essay is a shorter piece of writing than a research paper  or thesis .

In most cases, your assignment will include clear guidelines on the number of words or pages you are expected to write. Often this will be a range rather than an exact number (for example, 2500–3000 words, or 10–12 pages). If you’re not sure, always check with your instructor.

In this article you’ll find some general guidelines for the length of different types of essay. But keep in mind that quality is more important than quantity – focus on making a strong argument or analysis, not on hitting a specific word count.

In an academic essay, the main body should always take up the most space. This is where you make your arguments, give your evidence, and develop your ideas.

The introduction should be proportional to the essay’s length. In an essay under 3000 words, the introduction is usually just one paragraph. In longer and more complex essays, you might need to lay out the background and introduce your argument over two or three paragraphs.

The conclusion of an essay is often a single paragraph, even in longer essays. It doesn’t have to summarize every step of your essay, but should tie together your main points in a concise, convincing way.

The suggested word count doesn’t only tell you how long your essay should be – it also helps you work out how much information and complexity you can fit into the given space. This should guide the development of your thesis statement , which identifies the main topic of your essay and sets the boundaries of your overall argument.

A short essay will need a focused, specific topic and a clear, straightforward line of argument. A longer essay should still be focused, but it might call for a broader approach to the topic or a more complex, ambitious argument.

As you make an outline of your essay , make sure you have a clear idea of how much evidence, detail and argumentation will be needed to support your thesis. If you find that you don’t have enough ideas to fill out the word count, or that you need more space to make a convincing case, then consider revising your thesis to be more general or more specific.

The length of the essay also influences how much time you will need to spend on editing and proofreading .

You should always aim to meet the minimum length given in your assignment. If you are struggling to reach the word count:

  • Add more evidence and examples to each paragraph to clarify or strengthen your points.
  • Make sure you have fully explained or analyzed each example, and try to develop your points in more detail.
  • Address a different aspect of your topic in a new paragraph. This might involve revising your thesis statement to make a more ambitious argument.
  • Don’t use filler. Adding unnecessary words or complicated sentences will make your essay weaker and your argument less clear.
  • Don’t fixate on an exact number. Your marker probably won’t care about 50 or 100 words – it’s more important that your argument is convincing and adequately developed for an essay of the suggested length.

In some cases, you are allowed to exceed the upper word limit by 10% – so for an assignment of 2500–3000 words, you could write an absolute maximum of 3300 words. However, the rules depend on your course and institution, so always check with your instructor if you’re unsure.

Only exceed the word count if it’s really necessary to complete your argument. Longer essays take longer to grade, so avoid annoying your marker with extra work! If you are struggling to edit down:

  • Check that every paragraph is relevant to your argument, and cut out irrelevant or out-of-place information.
  • Make sure each paragraph focuses on one point and doesn’t meander.
  • Cut out filler words and make sure each sentence is clear, concise, and related to the paragraph’s point.
  • Don’t cut anything that is necessary to the logic of your argument. If you remove a paragraph, make sure to revise your transitions and fit all your points together.
  • Don’t sacrifice the introduction or conclusion . These paragraphs are crucial to an effective essay –make sure you leave enough space to thoroughly introduce your topic and decisively wrap up your argument.
