Use a strong, attention-grabbing opening. Discuss your qualifications briefly, then move on. Focus your speech on your passion and present a blueprint to achieve your goals. Close with a strong summary and call to vote for you.

Writing the Introduction

• Do not merely start by saying, "My name is ___ and I'm running for student council." Your classmates will already know as much and this is not really a unique statement. There will be time to state the basic information after you've got the class's attention. [1] X Research source

• State what you want. That is, what you're running for. Do you want to be the president , vice president , treasurer, secretary? Even if you think most students are aware of what position you're running for, make sure you state it here to remind them. [6] X Research source
• Try to keep this section brief as it's not as important as your qualifications and plans to improve the school . Even one sentence would suffice. For example, "My name is Ramona Hart, I'm in the 11th grade, and I'm running for treasurer of the student council."

• Any accomplishments relevant to the position warrant mentioning here. If you're running for secretary, for example, talk about your summer job filing papers in your uncle's law firm. • While this section is important, try to keep it minimal. A couple of sentences laying out your qualifications is enough as the body of your speech is where you should spend the most time. For example, let's go back to the above example. From there, we could say, "I am currently enrolled in advanced placement algebra and I have been an honor roll student for three years. Writing the Body of the Speech

• You should list your ideas and then expand on them later in the body. It might take a bit of research to figure out what you want to change. Ask around the school, talking to students and teachers, and see where there's room for improvement. What are the concerns of the students? What are people happy with regarding the school? What would they like to see change? Asking these questions can help you get a sense of your audience and community.
• Remember, you should not make promises you cannot keep. Do not say anything just to get elected. While many students might want gum-chewing policies eliminated or for the lunch period to run twice as long, this is probably not necessary or possible. Try to focus on areas that seem important to keep your school running safely and efficiently. • A good opening statement for your body would state the causes important to you and what you plan to do about them. For example, if you were running for president, you could say something like, "I understand we need to improve how we handle bullying, increase interest in extracurricular activities, and expand access to AP courses throughout the school. • Do summarize, briefly, your qualifications but do not put the main focus on them. This is where you should sincerely state your passion. Students should not just vote for you because you'd do a good job but because you genuinely care about the school. I can't do that, but what I can do is be your voice with the school administration and work to make this the best year Sample High has ever had. During the last two years, I've prepared myself to serve as Vice President by taking on extra work organizing a fan club for our football players to cheer them on when they play at home and make sure our school is represented in the stands at every away game. I've spent time as an office aid, learning about the everyday running of the school and silently taking notes on what we as students can do to improve things and how we can work with the administration.

As your Vice President, I will stand beside your president, offering support and stepping in when she is not able to be here or asks for some extra help. Today, I want to tell you something about me that you might not know. From the time I was five years old, I've been taking guitar lessons. I don't play in a band and I don't take music classes at school, but every night when I get home, I pick up my Fender and I relieve any stress from the day by playing a few of my favorite classic rock songs.

Learning to play a musical instrument takes a lot of time and stubbornness. My name is Dylan. I am running for student council president, and I am going to change the school as much as I positively can.

Most of you know me or have at least seen me around the school. I have been at Menlo for a long time, four years, and have seen the various principals, administrators, and teachers. I have seen what this glorious school needs and to how change things to fit those needs.

Menlo is not the only school I have been to. I have been to four other schools as well. One of those schools was in Africa. I have a lot of experience in schools and how to make a school thrive. I can bring these various ideas from around the globe right to the center stage of Menlo. I will fix any problem in the school, even if it is a deadly rat infestation!

There is one thing that many other schools have, that is not so present in Menlo. Does anyone ever ask you what YOU want to do to the school? Does anyone ever ask you how YOU want to help your fellow students? I will take this role with all seriousness and I will take it head on. I will promise to listen to everyone of your problems, comments, or suggestions in connection with the school.

Welcome speeches are often used in schools for freshmen students. The people who often do these types of speeches are principals, deans or presidents in schools.

Defining the Word Speech

An important talk that is most likely an important person addressing the group. It is a formal way to deliver a message or discourse to people in the room. A talk usually given to a large group or a party for special purposes i.e. welcoming students, welcoming people, a toast to a wedding.

Tips to Write and Present a Good Welcome Speech

One thing that comes to mind when you think about a good welcome speech is how to write one and how to make it good. Okay, two things. But to write a good welcome speech, you have to consider some of these possibilities . I am not saying they would work for everyone, but I am saying is as a general point of view, they are just tips and it is clearly up to you on how to make it work. So listed below are 5 tips on how to write a good welcome speech.

•   Audience : Who are your audience. Now, before you make a good welcome speech, ask yourself. Are my audiences adults, teens, children, or parents? What are they going to expect me to say? How do I deliver this speech to them?
• Topic:  Choosing a topic for a welcome speech is the next thing to do. Ask yourself, who are you welcoming, and why are you writing this speech for? Who are your audiences? College students ? Employees? High School students? Children? Your topic would depend on your audience as well.
•  Introduction : Your introduction does not have to be very lengthy. Your introduction should be short and to the point. You are merely telling the topic of your speech but not the speech itself. Avoid dragging the introduction and mistaking it for the body of your speech.
• Go straight to the point : Do not jump from one topic to another. Choose one topic, talk about it. Do not drag unnecessary things in your speech. This is something people should learn to avoid.
• Body Language: Watch your body language when you get up on stage to talk. Your body language says it all. Avoid staring into your speech copy. You need not memorize what you wrote, you only need to be familiar with it. Even during an impromptu speech , the best thing to remember is to be familiar with what you wrote and to remain eye contact with your audience. This is important because they need to feel and know you are addressing them.

Is it normal to feel stage fright when making a speech?

Stage fright is normal when you go up to make a speech. Just breathe. You’ll be fine.

How do I memorize a speech in a day?

You do not need to memorize your speech. Rather, you should try and be familiarized with it. That way it is easier for you to remember the important key points in your speech.

How to remain eye contact when making speeches?

Glance every now and then around the people in the room. Make them feel welcome. Remember whether it is a speech made to welcome or to say your farewell, always remain eye contact. Make them feel they matter.

How to make an impromptu speech good?

Go straight to the point, do not break eye contact, be familiar with what you wish to talk about and to have fun.

Let’s face it, we all have issues way back then when making speeches. It is not something to be embarrassed about, we have all been there. The fact that making speeches is more frightening than presenting it. It is close to impossible to memorize a speech but the best thing to do is to be familiar with what you wish to talk about. Go straight to the point, don’t dawdle. Keep eye contact with your audience. Make them feel they are important, that the speech you are making or presenting is for them. Everyone can come to me with your ideas, and I promise to listen and speak for you. Overall, my vision is to create an ideal condition for students where they can study and enjoy their student life to the fullest. The challenge of a welcome speech is to find alternate ways to express yourself sincerely without resorting to a string of undifferentiated "same-old, same-old" words and phrases that have become meaningless through overuse to greet your guests with.

And there's an additional question to answer. Is the event formal or informal? Your response will guide the language choices you make.

Do you need to use formal or informal language?

Is the welcome speech you're preparing formal or informal?  

There are major differences. The words you use in an informal speech will be entirely out of place in a formal one. You need to know what is right for the occasion if you want your speech to be a success.

How to avoid repetition making your speech boring!  

Repetition of a familiar word is easy to do and totally understandable.

Sometimes we can't find the words we want, and we get stuck in a vocabulary rut, using the same phrase or word over and over, and over again, trying to make it cover multiple and/or different situations.

And yet we know, words are just like clothes. One size does does not fit all.

What's the solution?

Here's three suggestions to individualize or tailor your words to fit your event a little better. And they'll be more interesting for the audience to listen to!

With care you'll find most will adapt either formal or informal use.

1. Add an adjective to the word welcome

Try working in an adjective to describe the quality of your welcome more fully.

I've provided an example sentence or two alongside each adjective to show how it could be used in context.

I know some examples are much more successful, (smooth to say and read), than others.

Some, quite frankly, clunk a little. (I say this with a wry smile ☺!) 

If you decide to use the feature word in those that do, perhaps you'll find a way to use it more eloquently!  

What sort of welcome are you offering?

It could be a(n):

• warm  welcome " Luckily the weather is on our side today! The sun and I are pleased to offer you a warm welcome."
• hearty  welcome  "Here's a hearty welcome, big and warm enough to encompass you all! To say we are thrilled to see you is an understatement."
• cheerful  welcome "It's my pleasure to extend a cheerful welcome to you all! Your presence makes us very happy."
• cordial  welcome "Fellow members, please join me in giving our guests the most cordial of welcomes."
• sociable  welcome "Let's hear it for a sociable welcome! On the count of three, turn to your neighbor and say 'hello'. There are no strangers here, only  friends we are yet to meet."
• genial  welcome "It's my pleasant duty to bid you all a genial welcome."
• convivial  welcome "On behalf of my colleagues, I wish you all a convivial welcome. We are going to have a merry and enjoyable time together."

2. What about the guests you want to welcome?

Think about the guests you want to welcome as part of your speech. What sort of guests are they?  Is there a word, or two, you could use to describe them more fully?

Accurate descriptions of the people coming to the event, either as especially invited guests, or as members of the audience, helps build credibility and trust.

The care you take to find the right words is an excellent investment for everybody involved.

Could your guests be better described as:

• esteemed  guests?
• brilliant  guests?
• celebrated  guests?
• dear  guests?
• admired  guests?
• acclaimed  guests?
• cherished  guests?
• respected  guests?
• revered  guests?
• wonderful  guests?
• popular  guests?
• much-loved  guests?
• famous  guests?
• expert  guests?
• distinguished  guests?
• honored  guests?
• valued  guests?
• appreciated  guests?
• remarkable  guests?
• renowned  guests?
• knowledgeable  guests?
• treasured  guests?

3. What about the word "guests"?

Who are you talking to? Yes, everybody in the audience is a guest to your event but what could they be more accurately called? 

Are these people your:

• colleagues?
• associates?
• classmates?
• co-collaborators?
• fellow-travelers, nurses, teachers ... ? (insert the appropriate descriptor)
• affiliates?
• conspirators?
• companions?

And lastly, have fun experimenting!

Do try mixing and matching your words and phrases to fit the occasion. After all there are more flavors to "welcome" than vanilla!

11:07 A.M. EDT   THE PRESIDENT:  Good morning.   Q    Good morning.   THE PRESIDENT:  Before I head to North Carolina, I wanted to speak a few moments about what’s going on on our college campuses here. 

We’ve all seen the images.  And they put to the test two fundamental American principles. 

Excuse me.  (Coughs.)   The first is the right to free speech and for people to peacefully assemble and make their voices heard.  The second is the rule of law.  Both must be upheld.    We are not an authoritarian nation where we silence people or squash dissent.  The American people are heard.  In fact, peaceful protest is in the best tradition of how Americans respond to consequential issues.    But — but neither are we a lawless country.  We are a civil society, and order must prevail.    Throughout our history, we’ve often faced moments like this because we are a big, diverse, free-thinking, and freedom-loving nation.    In moments like this, there are always those who rush in to score political points.  But this isn’t a moment for politics.  It’s a moment for clarity.    So, let me be clear.  Peaceful protest in America — violent protest is not protected; peaceful protest is.  It’s against the law when violence occurs.    Destroying property is not a peaceful protest.  It’s against the law.   Vandalism, trespassing, breaking windows, shutting down campuses, forcing the cancellation of classes and graduations — none of this is a peaceful protest.    Threatening people, intimidating people, instilling fear in people is not peaceful protest.  It’s against the law.   Dissent is essential to democracy.  But dissent must never lead to disorder or to denying the rights of others so students can finish the semester and their college education.   Look, it’s basically a matter of fairness.  It’s a matter of what’s right.  There’s the right to protest but not the right to cause chaos.   People have the right to get an education, the right to get a degree, the right to walk across the campus safely without fear of being attacked.   But let’s be clear about this as well.  There should be no place on any campus, no place in America for antisemitism or threats of violence against Jewish students.  There is no place for hate speech or violence of any kind, whether it’s antisemitism, Islamophobia, or discrimination against Arab Americans or Palestinian Americans.   It’s simply wrong.  There is no place for racism in America.  It’s all wrong.  It’s un-American.    I understand people have strong feelings and deep convictions.  In America, we respect the right and protect the right for them to express that.  But it doesn’t mean anything goes.  It needs to be done without violence, without destruction, without hate, and within the law.   You know, make no mistake: As President, I will always defend free speech.  And I will always be just as strong in standing up for the rule of law.   That’s my responsibility to you, the American people, and my obligation to the Constitution.   Thank you very much.   Q    Mr. President, have the protests forced you to reconsider any of the policies with regard to the region?   THE PRESIDENT:  No.
