Think of yourself as a member of a jury, listening to a lawyer who is presenting an opening argument. You'll want to know very soon whether the lawyer believes the accused to be guilty or not guilty, and how the lawyer plans to convince you. Readers of academic essays are like jury members: before they have read too far, they want to know what the essay argues as well as how the writer plans to make the argument. After reading your thesis statement, the reader should think, "This essay is going to try to convince me of something. I'm not convinced yet, but I'm interested to see how I might be."

An effective thesis cannot be answered with a simple "yes" or "no." A thesis is not a topic; nor is it a fact; nor is it an opinion. "Reasons for the fall of communism" is a topic. "Communism collapsed in Eastern Europe" is a fact known by educated people. "The fall of communism is the best thing that ever happened in Europe" is an opinion. (Superlatives like "the best" almost always lead to trouble. It's impossible to weigh every "thing" that ever happened in Europe. And what about the fall of Hitler? Couldn't that be "the best thing"?)

A good thesis has two parts. It should tell what you plan to argue, and it should "telegraph" how you plan to argue—that is, what particular support for your claim is going where in your essay.

Steps in Constructing a Thesis

First, analyze your primary sources.  Look for tension, interest, ambiguity, controversy, and/or complication. Does the author contradict himself or herself? Is a point made and later reversed? What are the deeper implications of the author's argument? Figuring out the why to one or more of these questions, or to related questions, will put you on the path to developing a working thesis. (Without the why, you probably have only come up with an observation—that there are, for instance, many different metaphors in such-and-such a poem—which is not a thesis.)

Once you have a working thesis, write it down.  There is nothing as frustrating as hitting on a great idea for a thesis, then forgetting it when you lose concentration. And by writing down your thesis you will be forced to think of it clearly, logically, and concisely. You probably will not be able to write out a final-draft version of your thesis the first time you try, but you'll get yourself on the right track by writing down what you have.

Keep your thesis prominent in your introduction.  A good, standard place for your thesis statement is at the end of an introductory paragraph, especially in shorter (5-15 page) essays. Readers are used to finding theses there, so they automatically pay more attention when they read the last sentence of your introduction. Although this is not required in all academic essays, it is a good rule of thumb.

Anticipate the counterarguments.  Once you have a working thesis, you should think about what might be said against it. This will help you to refine your thesis, and it will also make you think of the arguments that you'll need to refute later on in your essay. (Every argument has a counterargument. If yours doesn't, then it's not an argument—it may be a fact, or an opinion, but it is not an argument.)

This statement is on its way to being a thesis. However, it is too easy to imagine possible counterarguments. For example, a political observer might believe that Dukakis lost because he suffered from a "soft-on-crime" image. If you complicate your thesis by anticipating the counterargument, you'll strengthen your argument, as shown in the sentence below.

Some Caveats and Some Examples

A thesis is never a question.  Readers of academic essays expect to have questions discussed, explored, or even answered. A question ("Why did communism collapse in Eastern Europe?") is not an argument, and without an argument, a thesis is dead in the water.

A thesis is never a list.  "For political, economic, social and cultural reasons, communism collapsed in Eastern Europe" does a good job of "telegraphing" the reader what to expect in the essay—a section about political reasons, a section about economic reasons, a section about social reasons, and a section about cultural reasons. However, political, economic, social and cultural reasons are pretty much the only possible reasons why communism could collapse. This sentence lacks tension and doesn't advance an argument. Everyone knows that politics, economics, and culture are important.

A thesis should never be vague, combative or confrontational.  An ineffective thesis would be, "Communism collapsed in Eastern Europe because communism is evil." This is hard to argue (evil from whose perspective? what does evil mean?) and it is likely to mark you as moralistic and judgmental rather than rational and thorough. It also may spark a defensive reaction from readers sympathetic to communism. If readers strongly disagree with you right off the bat, they may stop reading.

An effective thesis has a definable, arguable claim.  "While cultural forces contributed to the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, the disintegration of economies played the key role in driving its decline" is an effective thesis sentence that "telegraphs," so that the reader expects the essay to have a section about cultural forces and another about the disintegration of economies. This thesis makes a definite, arguable claim: that the disintegration of economies played a more important role than cultural forces in defeating communism in Eastern Europe. The reader would react to this statement by thinking, "Perhaps what the author says is true, but I am not convinced. I want to read further to see how the author argues this claim."

A thesis should be as clear and specific as possible.  Avoid overused, general terms and abstractions. For example, "Communism collapsed in Eastern Europe because of the ruling elite's inability to address the economic concerns of the people" is more powerful than "Communism collapsed due to societal discontent."

Economics students must have prior exposure to real analysis, econometric theory, and advanced coursework in multivariable calculus, linear algebra, probability, and statistics. A solid foundation in calculus-based micro and macroeconomics is required. Students who are seeking graduate work with less mathematical orientation may find alternatives in the Harris School of Public Policy, the Booth School of Business, Political Science, and occasionally in Sociology, Law, or History.

Students admitted to MAPSS-Econ, the economics concentration in MAPSS, will receive an additional letter of admission alongside their formal offer. Only those students are eligible to work with a member of the Economics faculty on the MA thesis.

All MAPSS-Econ students must complete:

• Economics Math Camp (Econ 30400) the summer before they enter the MAPSS-Econ program
• Perspectives on Social Sciences Analysis (MAPS 30000)
• One methods course
• At least 3 master's level ECMA courses (or PhD-level economics courses if approved)
• 4 electives, selected in consultation with their advisor

All MAPSS-Econ students are required to complete an article-length MA thesis involving substantive economic references under the guidance of their advisor or another Economics PhD faculty at the University of Chicago. As preparation for developing the thesis, we strongly recommend that at least two of the 9 required courses have a paper-writing requirement. This will provide critical professional training and a key foundation for high-quality, graduate-level academic writing.

Students will be supported in their course selection, choice of faculty advisor, and MA thesis by the staff of Instructional Professors in the Griffin Department of Economics. Instructional Professors have expertise across the different fields within economic. They run reading groups by topic during the fall and winter quarters to support students in the development of the MA thesis proposal. Victor Lima , Senior Instructional Professor in Economics, and Min Sok Lee , Assistant Senior Instructional Professor in Economics, will match students to potential instructional professor advisors and reading groups based upon their respective fields of interest.

The Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics has a March 15 deadline for current MAPSS-Econ students to apply for UChicago’s PhD Program in Economics. If admitted, students begin their doctoral studies in the subsequent academic year.

International students on F-1 or J-1 student visas who complete the Master of Arts Program in the Social Sciences (MAPSS) with this concentration may be eligible for employment benefits associated with their respective visa type. The MAPSS–QMSA Concentration is listed as a STEM designated degree by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for the purposes of the STEM OPT extension allowing eligible students to apply. Graduates of MAPSS-Econ go on to doctoral programs in Economics and a range of careers in government, non-profit, and the private sector. MAPSS-Econ provides the opportunity to evaluate the prospect of continued doctoral study in Economics.

In a typical cohort, roughly 30% of MAPSS-Econ graduates pursue doctoral study, at UChicago and elsewhere. The remainder pursue professional careers, which are detailed here .  In recent years, our graduates have been admitted for the PhD in Economics at UChicago, LSE, Duke, Maryland, UPenn, Columbia, UCLA, Brown, Minnesota, Stanford, Northwestern, Texas-Austin, Erasmus University Rotterdam, UC-Davis, Simon Fraser, Boston University, Wisconsin-Madison, Princeton, Caltech, Cornell, and University College London.

Graduates have also been admitted for Business School PhDs at UChicago-Booth, London, Yale, Stanford, UCLA, INSEAD, Northwestern, UC-Berkeley, Illinois-Urbana Champaign, and UIC. They have gone on for PhD work in Public Policy at UChicago-Harris, Ohio State, Harvard, the University of Southern California, Colorado-Denver, and Duke.

Our MAPSS-Econ graduates have been admitted for Marketing/Behavioral Science PhDs at Toronto, Northwestern, UCLA, Hong Kong, NYU, UC-San Diego, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Colorado-Boulder, and Hong Kong Polytechnic.

Finally, many of our graduates have taken full-time research assistantships after graduating, at UChicago-Econ, UChicago-Booth, Duke-NUS, Yale, MIT, NYU, Princeton, Stanford, Wharton, UCLA, Columbia, and UC-Berkeley.

The implementation of sustainability and circular economy (CE) models in agri-food production can promote resource efficiency, reduce environmental burdens, and ensure improved and socially responsible systems. In this context, indicators for the measurement of sustainability play a crucial role. Indicators can measure CE strategies aimed to preserve functions, products, components, materials, or embodied energy. Although there is broad literature describing sustainability and CE indicators, no study offers such a comprehensive framework of indicators for measuring sustainability and CE in the agri-food sector.

Starting from this central research gap, a systematic literature review has been developed to measure the sustainability in the agri-food sector and, based on these findings, to understand how indicators are used and for which specific purposes.

The analysis of the results allowed us to classify the sample of articles in three main clusters (“Assessment-LCA,” “Best practice,” and “Decision-making”) and has shown increasing attention to the three pillars of sustainability (triple bottom line). In this context, an integrated approach of indicators (environmental, social, and economic) offers the best solution to ensure an easier transition to sustainability.

Conclusions

The sample analysis facilitated the identification of new categories of impact that deserve attention, such as the cooperation among stakeholders in the supply chain and eco-innovation.

Cities in the eclipse’s path are getting an economic ‘shot in the arm.’

Millions of tourists trying to experience the totality could bolster smaller economies across North America.

A vast swath of North America will soon be plunged into darkness. Though momentary, the total solar eclipse on Monday has already proved lucrative.

Across the United States, Mexico and Canada, towns and villages have been planning what could be the biggest tourist attraction for many small cities. Larger areas that are more accustomed to hosting events are nonetheless expecting a significant windfall.

“We don’t usually have this kind of tourism — it’s not common,” said Edgar Augusto González-Zatarain, the mayor of Mazatlán, Mexico. “Nature is giving us this opportunity, and we have to take advantage of it.”

Various indicators suggest the eclipse will bolster the economies in the path of totality, a roughly 110-mile-wide belt that will stretch from Mazatlán to Montreal. Hertz said car reservations had jumped 3,000 percent from a year ago. Airbnb has reported a 1,000 percent increase in searches for listings. In Oklahoma, the Choctaw Nation had seen a 200 percent increase as of mid-March in reservations at its resorts and casinos.

Mazatlán has long relied heavily on its port and fisheries, but the beach town has had growth in tourism, which now accounts for 80 percent of its economy. Still, it is often overshadowed by other Mexican resort towns and has had recent instances of cartel violence that may spook tourists. Mazatlán will experience the eclipse longer than many other cities, at more than four minutes. Hotels there are fully booked, and officials expect 120,000 visitors and an economic output of 500 million pesos (about $30 million).

Indianapolis is expecting roughly 100,000 visitors for the eclipse, said Chris Gahl, the chief executive of the city’s tourism marketing organization, who estimates the visitors will bring in $28 million to $48 million for the city. The city is used to hosting major events — including this year’s N.B.A. All-Star Game and the N.F.L.’s scouting combine — but the eclipse is a chance for the city to promote more of its arts and culture scene.

“We view hosting and being in the path of totality as an opportunity to diversify and broaden the audiences that might consider visiting Indy,” Mr. Gahl said.

Tourism officials in Austin, Texas, reported higher-than-usual hotel occupancy rates for the weekend before and the day of the eclipse. The city has the highest hotel inventory per capita in the state and is used to handling large influxes of tourists for events like South by Southwest and the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix.

“Our city is very much prepared and very experienced with large events and large influxes of people coming into the city,” said Wesley Lucas, a spokeswoman for Austin’s tourism marketing organization.

Bulent Temel, an economics professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio, estimated that eclipse tourism would add $285 million to the state’s economy. In an opinion essay, he called the event “ the most profitable 22 minutes in Texas history .”

But towns in the Texas Hill Country, which offers a better view of the eclipse, are far less accustomed to such events. Kerrville, a town of roughly 25,000, is preparing for its population to more than triple, town officials said.

The tourist-attracting event also presents a potential nuisance for public safety. Business owners and town officials have been preparing for several years, drawing on the experiences of the 2017 eclipse.

“This is going to be a great big economic shot in the arm for us,” said William Thomas, the emergency management coordinator for Kerr County, which includes Kerrville. “At the same time, it’s also going to be a tremendous drain on resources.”

Doug Hetzler, the manager of Gibson’s Discount Center in Kerrville, said his store was staying open longer during the week leading up to the eclipse and stocking its shelves with Moon Pies and wind chimes.

Mr. Hetzler said the store would offer a deal for tourists looking for precious space to park their cars during the event: Parking costs $50, but if you spend $100 in the store, you get that $50 back.

Mr. Hetzler hopes that the eclipse, more than creating a financial windfall, gives visitors a lasting impression of a town — and an old-time store — that they otherwise might not visit.

“Our opportunity is really to expose people to a store like this and a culture like this,” he said.

On Thursday, March 21, the Boston University Global Development Policy Center hosted Manuela Moschella, Professor of Political Science at the University of Bologna, to present the main ideas of her forthcoming book, “ Unexpected Revolutionaries: How Central Banks Made and Unmade Economic Orthodoxy .” In her discussion, Moschella explained the institutional transformation of central banks from the 1970s to the present. The event was moderated by Perry Mehrling, Professor of International Political Economy at the Boston University Pardee School of Global Studies.

Moschella’s book opens by noting that, while the role of central banks has been transforming over time, their role particularly shifted after the 2008 global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. Traditionally, central banks were seen as focused on controlling inflation through interest rate adjustments. However, their actions post-crises went beyond this narrow mandate by applying unconventional economic policies. They have intervened in financial stability, pursued inclusive growth objectives and even addressed social issues like climate change. These actions have blurred the lines between central banks and fiscal authorities, challenging their long-held image.

She argued that central banks worldwide have adopted unconventional policy levers to address issues beyond the limited mandate of price stability. Despite maintaining formal independence from electoral politics, she demonstrated that central banks are responsive to public interests and depend on political backing for legitimacy. Moschella emphasized the role of central banks in allowing liberalism to thrive when she evaluated the history of central banks. In the neoliberal economic order, independent central banks, armed with the power to influence interest rates as the primary monetary policy tool, have become the lynchpin of the financial system. Nonetheless, it has been observed that central banks have expanded their toolkit to address goals other than inflation during times of economic hardship.

The prevailing explanation for this transformation has generally focused on technocracy. This theory suggested that central banks, having learned from past mistakes, adopted new ideas about quantitative easing and financial stability. Their independence supposedly empowered them to act decisively. Moschella, however, noted that she finds this view lacking and proposes an alternative perspective. Although central banks are undoubtedly technocratic and independent, they also operate within a domestic political context. In other words, their success hinges on a certain degree of public support. They must navigate various audiences – financial markets, governments and citizens – as their legitimacy and credibility depend on them. As Moschella pointed out, central banks need to maintain public trust in addition to merely satisfying the expectations of the financial markets. As part of her explanation, Moschella also mentioned former Chair of the Federal Reserve of the United States Paul Volcker’s aggressive economic and political interventions during the 1970s and 1980s to combat stagflation, where global attention was drawn to central banks’ ability to manage more than macroeconomic conditions, illustrating political perspective to the story that complements a narrative approach emphasizing a technocratic view of central banks by taking a political stance.

Moschella examined the United States Federal Reserve (Fed) and the European Central Bank (ECB) to illustrate her arguments. She argued that central banks make critical decisions based on political circumstances, not just new economic ideas or absolute independence. Regarding controversial decisions, Moschella contended that central banks undertake disputed actions only when they have government backing. This political cover allows them to pursue unconventional policies without jeopardizing their public image. The specific forms of government support differ between the US and Europe due to their varying political landscapes. Conversely, central banks might make more contentious decisions concerning controversial decisions and public backlash, like addressing climate change (ECB) or social inclusion (Fed), in response to negative public sentiment. Here, they are reacting to public pressure rather than leading the charge. A central bank may use unconventional tools and revise its monetary strategy to acquiesce to public discontent; for example, after the 2008 global financial crisis, inclusive growth was added to the Fed’s stated objectives. Likewise, the ECB addressed climate change through banking supervision of non-financial reporting, reforming collateral eligibility and developing macroeconomic knowledge addressing climate change. The dual roles of a central bank – asserting independence while at the same time seeking political legitimacy – make it a peculiar institution in the world of finance.

Moschella also mentioned that, although her analysis significantly uses the Fed and ECB as examples of central banks focusing on issues beyond inflation, there is a small section in her book about the Bank of Japan and its historical experience with deflation. While deflation is not a center-stage topic – since most of the thinking on central banking, both in economics and political science, is about credibility in fighting inflation – it is relevant in the context of unconventional policies. The Bank of Japan is particularly significant because it was one of the only high-income countries to confront deflation, though this issue continues to remain at the margins. This example illustrates her desire to understand and chart how central banks emerged as distinct political institutions across the world.

Additionally, Moschella stressed the necessity of maintaining a strong relationship between central bankers and political principles so that monetary and fiscal policies can be coordinated in a way that maintains the central bank’s independence. There is no doubt that political support of monetary policies, especially the quantitative easing regime, is of paramount importance during times of distress. On the other hand, if political leaders become hostile towards bankers, the public’s trust in central banks will decrease, making it harder for them to stabilize the economy.

Subsequently, in Q&A portion of the discussion, Moschella answered the question of what the primary policy of a central bank should be: inflation or financial stability? Moschella pointed out that the context of the economy matters; for example, the Fed was created when financial stability was a crucial concern, and the ECB was created when price stability was the central issue, and she emphasized that these mandates have evolved over time and have potential tradeoffs. For example, central banks might be reluctant to increase interest rates even if it is necessary because it may be detrimental to financial stability. Thus, although the mainstream mandate of central banks is the stability of prices, they prioritize other areas depending on the macroeconomic context, and politics and society decide the priority.

Regarding the question about the differences in mandates of central banks between the Global North and Global South, Moschella highlighted that developing countries tend to implement more unconventional monetary policies because they might also be concerned about economic development over price stability to facilitate social goals. However, countries in the Global North also deviated from the price stability mandate when it was required. For instance, after World War II, the Italian government pursued economic development as its primary objective. Consequently, Italy used central bank credits, credit allocation policies and interest rates to support the development of particular industries and technologies. Therefore, according to Moschella, it is up to the governments to decide the direction in which the central banks should be heading.   

Overall, the book challenges the notion that central banks solely respond to financial markets. While that has occurred at times, Moschella highlighted critical moments where governments and citizens significantly influence central bank actions, pushing them towards specific goals. The author finally pointed out that this perspective on central banks as political institutions necessitates a broader understanding of their decision-making processes. They are not isolated entities driven solely by technical expertise. Instead, they operate within a complex web of political influences, needing to consider the demands of various stakeholders to ensure their continued effectiveness.

Master’s in Applied Economics Program Hosts Spring 2024 Career Day

The Master’s in Applied Economics Program (MAEP) hosted its Spring 2024 Career Day on Friday, March 22.

MAEP’s Career Day occurs twice a year and connects current and prospective MAEP students to alumni and employers.

The event began with a panel discussion featuring MAEP alumni. Students heard from Nick Juliano, a Financial Analyst for Stantec, Brett Crawford, a Data Science and Analytics Consultant for Softcrylic, and Logan Fenimore, a Managed Care Data Analyst for the Sarasota Memorial Health Care System. These alumni discussed their careers and how MAEP prepared them for success.

MAEP students then participated in mock interviews with representatives from Citi, Berkeley Research Group, the Florida Public Service Commission, and more. These mock interviews help prepare students for the job market and give them the opportunity to network. Organizations also use these interviews as a recruiting tool.

The day ended with a networking reception with prospective MAEP students, the current Master’s cohort, professors, program alumni, and employers.

The Master’s in Applied Economics Program is a one-year program that prepares students for a variety of careers in government and the private sector. Students gain real-world experience by working closely with alumni, faculty, and civic leaders.
