Free Spelling Activities

spelling homework ideas for first grade

I’m sharing 12 FREE, NO PREP, printable and digital Spelling Activities for Kindergarten, first and second grade students! These activities provide meaningful and engaging spelling practice and are perfect for any word work literacy center. I also offer details about my Year-Long Weekly Word Study Resource that offers weekly word lists, practice activities, parent letters, assessments and MORE for k-3!

Hey Friends!

I’m curious…. in your already crowded instruction schedule, does word study have a place?  Have you found a way to make spelling instructiion more than just giving a list of words on Monday and assessing on Friday?  Resources for teaching spelling can be hard to come by. Sometimes it feels like with the intense focus on more critical thinking skills in literacy, explicit spelling instruction (or word study) has become an outdated practice.

But I think we can all agree we all want our students to be strong spellers!  Spelling is important!  It is related to reading.  If students can spell well, they will read well.   It’s related to writing.  When students spell well they can focus on communicating their ideas, rather than worrying about how to construct words.

If you are looking for a word study program to use with your students, or maybe just looking to freshen up your spelling activities then you have come to the right place.  Today I’m excited to describe to you the Year-Long Weekly Word Study bundles I have created for kindergarten, first, second and third grade, as well as share my FREE, NO PREP Spelling Activities!

Free Spelling Activities

You’ve got a lot on your plate, so to help lighten your load I created this resource that includes 12 different EDITABLE spelling printables!  It is totally free and provides meaningful practice and the repetition students need for mastery of the spelling words and phonics patterns you teach.  With many activities to choose from, spelling practice will always feel fresh and engaging for students.

To save you time, I created these Spelling Activities as an editable “autofill” document.  This means the ONLY thing you have to do is insert your spelling words (up to 12) into the spelling activities word list.  That’s it!!  Once you type your words into the word list, you simply print the pages you want to use.

Any of these activities make a great addition to your weekly word work routine.  Simply pair the spelling word cards with a pocket chart and print a few activities for an instant literacy center!  They also make great morning work or homework practice.

The FREE resource includes ALL of the following activities:

💗 Trace and Write Spelling

💗 ABC Order

💗 ipad Spelling

💗 Vowel Consonant Spelling

💗 Sign Language Spelling

💗 Rainbow Spelling *note this has been updated to include Rainbow Sound Spelling

💗 Triangle Spelling

💗 Spelling Illustrations

💗 Make a Word Search

💗 Spelling Word Shapes

💗 Roll-a-Color Spelling

💗 Spell and Move

A Year-Long Weekly Word Study Resource for K-3

So while the activity pages I’ve shared above could be used in a variety of ways, I know there are teachers who are looking for more.  They want an actual program that explicitly teaches students different spelling patterns each week and offers them meaningful practice so students can master those patterns. That’s why I created Year-Long Weekly Word Study Resources for Kindergarten, first, second and third grade students.

spelling homework ideas for first grade

Word study units are different from traditional spelling units.  Instead of giving students a list of words to memorize each week, word study units focus on a specific phonics skill.  Students are given explicit instruction on the phonics pattern.  They engage in activities throughout the week that allow them to practice the phonics skill and investigate and discover the patterns in words.

Word study offers students opportunities to investigate and discover the patterns in words. When students have knowledge of these patterns they don’t learn to spell just one word at a time.  They can generalize and apply their new learning to their reading and their writing.

My Weekly Word Study Units have EVERYTHING you need to provide your students with effective word study instruction and spelling practice all year long!

I have different units for kindergarten , first , second , AND third-grade students. While the units vary a bit from grade to grade, they all contain these core components:

💕 A Scope and Sequence

We know that for instruction to be most effective, it must be systematic and follow a scope and sequence . The scope and sequences included in these resources are based on my learning including Wiley Blevins’ book,  A Fresh Look at Phonics *,  The Reading Teacher’s Top Ten Tools, and  Speech to Print  and are specific for each grade.

The word study units each include a phonics scope and sequence specific to the grade.

💕 Word cards

These word cards can be printed out on card stock and used in centers, small groups, or for your whole group instruction.

💕 3 Editable Practice Printables for Each Unit

We know that in order for students to master the skills we teach they need a lot of practice.  For every unit, you’ll get 3 editable practice printables. The activities vary slightly depending on grade and the skill that is being taught.

spelling homework ideas for first grade

💕 Editable Assessments

spelling homework ideas for first grade

While the assessments vary a bit from grade to grade, they all include:

– Word Dictation:  words that follow the week’s phonics skills and bonus spaces for review or high-frequency words.

– Sentence Dictation:  a sentence that includes target phonics skill words, previously taught phonics skill words and high-frequency words.

– Spelling Error Analysis:  a sentence that includes target phonics skill words, previously taught phonics skill words and high-frequency words. Students must correct the mistakes and rewrite the corrected sentences.

💕 A Teacher Assessment Guide and Master Word List

You’ll get an answer key for each unit to make it extra easy for you to quickly check those assessments!

spelling homework ideas for first grade

💕  A Family Letter for Each Unit

We know that word study looks a little different than traditional spelling that families may be accustomed to. This letter will help families understand the shift, inform them of the focus for the unit, and offer them ways to support their children at home.

While students are busy studying spelling words for grade 1, there will also be a number of words that they know but can’t spell. Students constantly acquire news words through reading and listening. That’s why first grade spelling words and vocabulary words are a bit different.

Here is a short sample list of the kinds vocab words for 1st graders should know by the end of the year :

  • prefer
  • comfortable
  • consequences
  • repeat
  • rhyme
  • fascinating
  • positive

When you compare these lists, you can see that vocab words are a bit more complex, use plural forms or different word tenses, and have more syllables. The more students practice the four pillars of vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, and writing, the more comfortable they will be with these words—adding them to their list of 1st grade spelling words one day!

1st Grade Spelling Words

I love to read studies. A study by the University of Sydney has shown that children who are taught to spell words correctly from a young age, are more likely to be better readers and writers.

Teaching spelling to 1st graders

Teaching spelling is not easy as it can be very time-consuming. But there are some ways in which you can make the process easier.

You can use a word list with all the words that your child needs to learn, and teach them how to spell them one at a time.

I also love have students practice writing their spelling words in sentences or paragraphs so they will get used to using them in context (see worksheets shared below).

Another way I like to teach spelling is by using word searches and crossword puzzles, which will help children see how each letter is used and how it fits into the whole word.

What are the 1st Grade Spelling Tasks

1st Grade Spelling

Some of you may be curious as to what the daily tasks are. So, without further ado, take a look at the general weekly tasks.

Monday : Write Spelling Words 3x

Tuesday : Word Scrambler

Wednesday : Sentences

Thursday : Spelling Game or Stamp & Spell

Friday : Test or Not

Set up your 1st Grade Spelling Notebook

1st grade spelling notebook cover sheet.

1st Grade Spelling

To set up your Spelling Notebook, buy a 3-ring binder that has the clear front to display the cover sheet. If your kids are like mine, they will appreciate the cover page.

Weekly 1st Grade Spelling Tasks Sheet

1st Grade Spelling

Now, this is how we arrange the inside of the Spelling Notebook. First, goes the Weekly Spelling Tasks sheet, which lays out what activity is dedicated to each day. For those of you who do not follow a typical Mon-Fri schedule, you may prefer the Weekly Spelling Tasks sheet that does not specify days.

1st Grade Spelling

1st Grade Spelling List

1st Grade Spelling

Next, put in the 1st Grade Master Spelling list that can be printed out from the K12 website. The 1st grade word list focuses on 8 words weekly. Some of the words are sight words, word family sets, and or special phonetic sounds. The spelling list coincides seamlessly with our other learning goals.

For convenience, we keep the spelling lists that we are currently working on in the inside front flap. At this age, since my student is still learning to write correctly, I find it important to write the words in larger print on a separate sheet of paper and keep it handy in the front pocket also.

1st Task: Write Words 3x Each

1st Grade Spelling

The first task goes in next: Write the words 3x’s each sheet. Writing the words three times each is excellent practice in letter writing. For me, this activity is more about writing the letters correctly than the actual spelling of words. Oftentimes, I write the words correctly on the top line  to show my student how to write the letters and as an example for them to copy.

This is also an appropriate time to phonetically sound out words, discuss word patterns, and special sounds.

2nd Task: Word Scrambler

1st grade Spelling

Next, comes the Word Scrambler activity sheet. The Word Scrambler will likely be a new concept for your 1 st grader. As their teacher, you will take each of your child’s spelling words and write a scrambled version  on the top line for each #1-#8. For example, the word, “that,” you may write the letters, “ttah.” Your child would then use his spelling list to figure out what set of scrambled letters match his word. You may need to help them until they grasp the idea. They will eventually do this on their own.

3rd Task: Spelling Sentences

1st Grade Spelling

The third task asks the student to use each of the spelling words in a sentence. This activity pushes your child to write eight sentences. I encourage you to walk your child through this process until they feel comfortable tackling this task independently. Ask your child, “How could you use, ‘the’ in a sentence?” Once they tell me their sentence, I write the sentence on the top line for them to copy onto the second line. This enables them to see the words and letters written correctly. We are really focusing on writing capital letters and adding punctuation too.

4th Task: Spelling Games

Task 4 is all about SPELLING GAMES! There isn’t necessarily a sheet or activity put into your notebook for this task. This is a task that requires some sort of game involving the spelling words.

Stamp & Spell

1st Grade Spelling

One printable activity to try is the Stamp & Spell. This activity sheet is the perfect opportunity to use letter stamps or even scrabble letters to build spelling words. I usually write the words in the column to the left for my student. On the right side, my student uses a set of letter stamps and ink pad to recreate the spelling word. My artistic kids always loved this one.

DOWNLOAD THE STAMP & SPELL SHEET

Homemade Homeschool: Matching Game

1st Grade Spelling

Another favorite activity is this homemade matching game. You can make a matching game with the spelling words using index cards. Cut 8 index cards in half, write each spelling word on two different cards so that in the end, you have 2 cards for each word. This should give you a total of 16 cards. Play a quick matching game with your child. Every time a card is turned over, the player is to say the word out loud. Fun & Frugal!

Spelling Training Online Games

1st Grade Spelling

One way to practice and study spelling words is to  use the free games provided by Spelling Training . When you go to the home page, insert your spelling list. Once you have saved your spelling list, your student can play a number of spelling games. This site made a huge difference in one of my son’s spelling success.

5th Task: Spelling Test/Assessment

1st Grade Spelling

Lastly, the test or word scrambler assessment is placed next. There are two styles of assessment included. The first assessment is a traditional spelling test. In this method, the teacher calls out the word and the student writes the word on the paper. The second assessment option is what I like to call, “Word Scrambler Style.” This option affords the student all the letters needed to spell the word without looking at the word. At this point, the Word Scrambler Assessment is a more appropriate test for my 1 st grader.

1st Grade Spelling

Truthfully, I do not test my 1 st grader right away. It is something we work towards. For us, 1 st grade is more about learning how to complete the tasks so that they can tackle spelling in 2 nd grade independently.

Spelling Homework Ideas for Effective Learning

Are you unsure if your students are learning spelling properly? Are you looking for some effective spelling homework ideas that will boost your kid’s spelling skill in no time? Then this article is just for you.

In the past, teachers gave a list of words to write at home and bring them back to class the next day. No wonder students got bored after a few classes. But nowadays, keeping students hooked to learning spelling is one of the top priorities which is why teachers (and parents) need interactive spelling activities instead of the traditional ones. And to help them, we have gathered a number of spelling homework ideas that will successfully do their job to grow your kid’s interest to learn spelling.

Spelling Homework Ideas for 1 st Grade

Let’s start with the beginners. Students in this level are naturally interested to learn new words as they are discovering a whole new world. That’s why choosing a spelling activity for them should be done carefully.

For beginners, most of spelling practice should be done at class. You can give a few words to practice at home to improve their skill further but make sure:

  • Not to give too many words for homework
  • Not to give a word that wasn’t practiced in the class

For 1 st graders, homework should consist of words that were already learned in class and given only to practice further so that students can understand and memorize the words properly.

Check out the spelling homework ideas for 1 st graders:

  • Write a word 5 times. Use a different color each time.
  • Write the words in alphabetical order, then write them again in reverse order.
  • Make word chain. Write a word, then write another word whose first letter is the last letter of the previous one.
  • Ask the students to find out the number of syllables in each spelling word. They need to write the word using different color for each syllable.

Sight words

It is a clever strategy to start teaching sight words. These words are frequently used so students would see them everywhere and would learn then faster. You can print them out from SpellQuiz Printable Sight Words List.  The words here are divided in grades so that you won’t have to worry about using words that are harder for students in a certain level.

Hands on Spelling Activities to improve the skill of beginner level students

Not just homework, you should give some spelling activities also to make the learning process enjoyable. Here are some hands-on spelling activities for your little learner:

Create the words

These activities don’t involve writing the spelling words. We will use different types of letter shapes to build or assemble the given words. Check the activities below:

  • Build the words with letter stickers.
  • Make words with letter blocks.
  • Create words with magnetic letter shapes.
  • Use scrabble letter tiles to build the given words.
  • Make words with alphabet stones.
  • Create words with alphabet pasta.
  • Use letter stamps to stamp your words into papers.
  • Use Lego bricks to create the words.
  • Make letters from play dough and build words with them
  • Write letters on papers or cards and place them on the floor. Ask your kid to spell a word aloud while jumping from one letter to another.
  • Use letter beads and thread them together to build the words.

Write the words

In these activities, the child needs to write the words, but not in the conventional way:

  • Paint the words with brush and colors. You can use watercolor or acrylic paints.
  • Write the words with crayon.
  • Write each word with a certain colored pencil. Cut each letter apart and mix them. Ask your child to assemble the similar colored letters to build the words.
  • Use chalk and board to write the words.
  • Use markers and write the words on a whiteboard or on your window. Make sure to use washable markers.
  • Ask your child to make letters with their body to spell a word.
  • Use cotton buds and dot-paint each letter to build a word.
  • Ask your child to type a word. You can use computer or a typewriter if you have one.
  • Type each word 10 times. Use a different font each time.
  • Use your finger and write each word on sand. You can also use salt. Just spread them on a tray and ask your child to write on them.
  • Ask your child to write letters with whipped cream on cookies and build words with them. If spelled correctly, they can eat all the cookies used to spell the word.
  • Write the words on the wall using a laser pointer.
Check out our guide on spelling schemes for primary schools , which will help you in determining the perfect spelling homework for your students.

Other activities

  • Play Hangman game with your child.
  • Assign a number to each word of the list. Make a spinner with the numbers. The student needs to spin to get a number and spell the assigned word.
  • Ask your child to spell a word. Then ask them to spell another word that rhymes with it. You can use it when you are teaching them spelling patterns. Ask them to spell as many words as they can with similar pattern.
  • Make spelling rhymes or spelling songs with your child. You must remember the spelling song for ‘Difficulty’ from movie ‘Matilda’. Try to make one for other words too. Here is one for the word ‘Mississippi’: M Mrs. I Mrs. S-S-I Mrs. S and S-I Mrs. P-P-I But make sure you’re not creating a rhyme for every word. It will be confusing.
  • Make acrostic poem with each word. You can ask your child to make one too.
  • Tell the students to draw a picture to describe the word they learned.
  • Write the listed words on one side of the paper and write its definition on the other side. Play a game where you ask the definition in one round and the word in the next one.

Spelling Bingo

Play spelling bingo with your students. Give the students an empty chart and draw one on the board. Point to an empty block and say a word from your list. The students need to spell the word correctly to be able to write it in the box. This game can also be played at home.

Learn spelling in a fun way with spelling jokes for adults now!

Spelling Homework Ideas for older students

Not just kids, even adults feel bored after a while with spelling lessons. That’s why we need to add some interesting spelling activities with traditional homework to keep the students engrossed.

Check out the spelling homework ideas given below. They are suitable for students of all levels and not just for students only. If you are an ESL student or just an individual willing to improve your spelling skill, these activities will help you learn and understand words faster.

1. Write a sentence with each word you learned. Try to use multiple words of the list in one sentence.

2. Write a story with the words you learned. If you are not sure what to write about, try some common themes such as: Holidays, Travel, Movie, Fantasy, City/Town, Seasons etc.

3. Divide the listed words in two sets and play ‘memory game’ with a friend or family member.

4. Find definitions of each word from the dictionary. Sort them out for similar meaning or origin.

5. Write a word, now try to make a new word by adding a letter. For example, To-> Toe-> Towel->Towels Go-> God-> Good-> Goods-> Goodness

6. Make a greeting card and try to add as many spelling words you learned as possible.

7. Write a paragraph that contains the word you learned, its synonyms and antonyms. Bonus points if you can do it for multiple words in one paragraph.

Word Search

‘Word Search’ is a great spelling activity for all level of students. Just be careful that the words you are using are appropriate for their level. There are many ways this game can be played:

  • Give them a time limit. The one who found the highest number of words wins.
  • Tell them how many words they need to find. The one that completes the fastest wins.
  • For younger students, give a list of words along with the grid.

You can use play this game outside of the class too. Find a word grid on the internet and try to solve it on your own. Track how much time you need to solve each set and try to break your own record.
