50 Thoughtful Wedding Wishes for a Nephew (+Unique Examples)

  • by Marisa Jenkins
  • April 27, 2023

As the saying goes, time flies when we are having fun. One day, we are surrounded by adorable toddlers who cannot stop running around. The next day, they are all grown up, spreading their wings and finding the love of their life.

The time will come when you need to prepare wedding wishes for a nephew. In general, these wedding wishes are nostalgic, sentimental, and supportive in tone. Below are 20 examples of wedding wishes.

Wedding Wishes for a Nephew: Heartfelt Samples

groom

1. It feels just like yesterday when my sister gave birth to her first son. Watching you get married to the love of your life is surreal, but I am so happy and proud of you. Giving you two all my love and best wishes.

2. From a boy who can barely ride a bicycle without training wheels, you are now a handsome man ready to start a family. It has been a joy to watch you grow up. I love you, and I wish both of you a happy marriage.

3. Today is the start of the rest of your life, my dear nephew. And ( Name of nephew’s partner ), welcome to the family! I hope you know that your entire family has your back when times get rough. We are all one call away.

4. When people say that high school sweethearts do not last, my nephew and his lovely wife are proof that that is a lie. With love, passion, and grit, anything is possible. Keep this in mind as you start this new chapter of your life.

There will be a lot of difficulties ahead. In fact, there will be times when giving up is the easier choice. But remember that love is not just a feeling; it is a commitment, a choice you make every day.

I wish you two all the best! May God give you strength, guidance, and patience with each other.

5. I watched my nephew go through multiple heartbreaks and rejections. It was sad, but I knew that he will eventually find the right person: someone who will challenge him, make him laugh, and love him for who he is.

That person is ( name of nephew’s partner ), standing before us as his ( husband/wife/partner ) for life. I cannot be happier that they found each other; they are truly a match made in heaven.

I will end my wedding wishes with 1 Corinthians 13:4-5: Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs.

6. I have been married to my partner for 25 years already. I remember planning my wedding and talking to my brother about including my nephew in the ceremony . In the end, a young ( name of your nephew ) wrote a lovely poem for us at the reception.

Take it from someone who has been married for this long — love each other fully, but do not forget to nurture yourself. Be devoted to your partner, but do not lose your individuality. Love yourself as you love your partner.

Going full circle, I will end my wedding wishes for my dear nephew with a poem. This is Guan Daosheng’s “Married Love”:

You and I Have so much love, That it Burns like a fire, In which we bake a lump of clay Molded into a figure of you And a figure of me.

7. To my dear nephew and his gorgeous, kind ( husband/wife/partner ), congratulations on an unforgettable wedding. May this be the start of a life full of laughter, fortune, and blessings. I pray that the universe grants you two whatever it is you wish for.

8. Time really flies. One day, you and your cousins were playing on the playground while your mother and I gossiped on the benches. Now, you have found your other half. I am sure it will not be long before you have your own small army already.

I have no doubt that you will be an amazing companion, husband, and father. I wish you two all the best. Just know that your family is always a phone call away, ready to share the latest neighborhood gossip. I love you!

9. Congratulations to my sweet, caring, and thoughtful nephew, for marrying the loveliest, kindest, and prettiest woman in this room. I cannot offer much advice other than doing what works for both of you. You know your relationship the best.

With that, always remember that we are here for you whenever you need us. We will include you and your marriage in our prayers. I love you both. A toast to a healthy and fulfilling marriage!

10. Among us siblings, it was ( name of nephew’s parent ) who gave birth first. From the moment ( name of nephew ) was born, we were all very protective of him. We made sure he went to the best schools, befriended only good influences, and whatnot.

Initially, we were wary of ( name of nephew’s partner ). However, we quickly realized how kind, hardworking, and compassionate she is. In short, we saw what made our dearest nephew fall in love with her, and we fell in love, too.

So, we cannot be any happier to see you get married to each other. May life treat you kindly, and may God always show you the way. Congratulations!

11. Any marriage is only as good as the couple’s communication skills. Unfortunately, reading minds is not part of our toolkits as humans. My biggest advice to both of you is to talk to each other with an open mind and heart. That is the key to a healthy marriage. Congratulations, you two!

12. To the newlyweds, may the years be kind to both of you. I have faith that you two can overcome any challenge that God puts in your way. As long as you lean on each other, you can do anything. Cheers!

13. For those of you who do not know, ( name of nephew ) and ( name of nephew’s partner ) met in middle school. They were always fighting about something, whether it be homework, grades, pop culture, or whatnot.

I would say it is a surprise to see them get married today, but I also saw how much they have cared for each other over the years. They are each other’s best friends, number one fans, and also number one critics.

To our newlyweds, I wish you nothing but the best this world has to offer. Your families are always here to be the wind beneath your wings. I love you!

14. Dear nephew, I am so proud of the man you have grown to be. From a scrappy kid who cries, because they can’t beat a video game, you are now a determined and resourceful young man.

I wish that married life will treat you and your partner well. I wish that wherever you go and whatever you do, you will find success and fortune. Above all, I wish that you find happiness and contentment.

15. ( Name of nephew ), if you are anything like me and your mother, you are stubborn, loyal to a fault, and full of kindness. These are some of your best traits. You never give up on what you want, but you do not step on others to get it.

And if you really are anything like me and your mother, I know that you find it difficult to ask for help. Even if we wish you all our best, there will always be ups and downs in a marriage.

I pray that when the time comes and you need help, you will approach us or other resources . My biggest advice is that there is no shame in asking for help. I love you so much, and congratulations.

16. To my funniest, most charming nephew, congratulations on getting married. Some days, marriage will feel like the most natural thing in the world. There will be moments, though, when it will feel like the rockiest road on a highway.

Embrace every day that you get to spend with your ( husband/wife/partner ). Challenges are only impossible if you think they are. Have a great start to the rest of your life, ( name of newlyweds ), I love you both!

17. Love is such a beautiful thing. My dear nephew, I am so happy that you get to experience the type of love that feels like coming home after a long day. May you be tireless in nurturing this love. Congratulations, sweethearts!

18. Even though I know you have traveled far and wide, marriage will be the biggest adventure of your life. I wish that it will be filled with good memories, good food, and good fortune. A toast to the newlyweds!

19. When your mother told me that you will be getting married, I was overtaken with joy. Right then, I knew that there was no way I was missing your ceremony , even if it was a thousand miles away.

Words cannot express how proud I am of you, ( name of nephew ). I wish you and ( name of nephew’s partner ) the happiest marriage, full of laughter, love, and luck. May you always be kind to each other, and may you find success and contentment.

20. ( Name of newlyweds ), it is an honor to witness you profess your love and commitment to each other. Congratulations on your union and on the delightful wedding weekend!

May God always be at the center of your relationship. Find Him in times of doubt, thank Him in times of good fortune, and seek Him in times of trouble. You can do all things through Christ.

May you two always remember where you came from but never be afraid to widen your horizons. Nourish your passion. Dream high. Be each other’s biggest fan and gentlest critique. Most importantly, choose to love each other every day through thick and thin.

21. (Name of nephew and his partner ), today marks the beginning of a beautiful adventure for both of you. As you take this next step in your journey, I wish you both endless happiness and a lifetime of love. May your love continue to grow stronger with each passing day. Congratulations!

23. To my wonderful nephew, congratulations on finding your forever love, and congratulations on your wedding day! May your love be a beacon of hope and inspiration to those around you.

24. On this beautiful day, I pray that God blesses your marriage and fills your hearts with His love and wisdom. May your commitment to each other be a testament to your faith and may your love for each other grow stronger with each passing day. Congratulations, dear nephew.

25. Dear nephew, as you start this new chapter in your life, I couldn’t be happier for you. May your marriage be filled with love, trust, and understanding. May you always cherish each other and never take your love for granted.

26. I am so happy to take part in your special day, ( name of nephew ). It was an honor being one of your groomsmen. May your wedding be filled with love and joy, creating wonderful memories that you will cherish forever.

32. My dear nephew, I’m so delighted to see you all grown up and getting married! Remember, marriage is like a good bottle of wine – it only gets better with age. Just make sure to let it breathe, give it the right amount of attention, and never ever serve it with ice. Cheers to you both!

33. Congrats on your wedding, ( name of nephew )! Always remember that marriage is like a beautiful flower. You need to water it, give it sunlight, and occasionally talk to it—even when it doesn’t talk back.

Here’s to a lifetime of growing love and beautiful blossoms! As the Koreans say, I hope you and ( name of nephew’s partner ) only walk on the flower road.

34. ( Name of nephew ), I hope you don’t mind that I’m giving you another piece of unsolicited advice before you embark on this exciting—or intimidating—journey called marriage.

I’m sure you’ve already heard the saying, “A happy spouse makes for a happy house.” As someone who’s been married for over two decades, there’s nothing truer than that.

So, I want you two to laugh together, cry together, and be together through the ups and downs. When push comes to shove, get a dog! They will always brighten up a home.

Congratulations, ( name of nephew )!

35. Mazel tov, ( name of nephew )! Always remember that marriage is like a rollercoaster—it has ups, downs, the occasional scream, and the occasional bouts of nausea. Don’t forget to hold on tight, enjoy the ride, laugh, and watch out for the scream cam. Here’s to a lifetime of thrilling adventures together!

36. Congratulations on a stunning wedding, ( nephew )! I know you’ve heard of marriage being described as a rollercoaster, but I thought long and hard of another metaphor for you.

Marriage is like a game of chess, except the board is constantly moving, and you actually have no idea of how the game works. All you know is that the queen is the most powerful piece.

Don’t mess with your queen, ( nephew ). Let her work her magic, but also protect her, cherish her, and appreciate her for all that she does.

37. Dear ( name of nephew ), congratulations on your wedding! It feels just like yesterday when you were playing with toy cars; now, you’re about to drive off into the sunset with your soulmate.

When the going gets tough, just remember to treat your marriage like a classic car: keep it polished, well-maintained, and always fueled with love.

38. To my favorite nephew, congratulations on getting hitched! As your cool aunt, I’ve watched you grow up and make many great decisions. But I have to say, marrying ( name of nephew’s partner ) has to be your best decision yet.

I wish you both a lifetime of happiness! May your love be as contagious as that one time we all caught the flu during our family vacation!

39. Congratulations on your wedding, ( name of nephew )! As you and ( name of nephew’s partner ) come together in marriage, may your lives be filled with endless love, laughter, and happiness.

Always remember to cherish each moment together and let your love be the guiding light throughout your journey. God will always be there to show you the way. Wishing you both the very best.

40. To my dearest nephew, as you enter this sacred union, may your love for your spouse and yourself continue to blossom and flourish. May your marriage prove and improve the strength of your bond and the depth of your commitment. Wishing you a lifetime of happiness and blessings. Congratulations!

41. ( Name of nephew ) and ( name of nephew’s partner ), as you begin your journey together as husband and wife, may your love be a strong and enduring force that guides you through life’s challenges and triumphs. May God always guide you down the right path.

I wish you two nothing but the best — a lifetime of happiness, love, and laughter. Congratulations on your wedding!

43. ( Name of nephew) and ( name of nephew’s partner ), this day marks the beginning of a beautiful journey with your soulmate. May your love for each other continue to grow, and may you be each other’s rock through thick and thin. Wishing you a lifetime of love, happiness, and cherished memories. Congratulations!

44. Congratulations on your wedding, ( name of nephew )! I’ve watched you grow up into a mature, sensitive, and caring man. I am so proud of the person you are today, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you and ( name of nephew’s partner ).

Regardless, it’s such a joy to see you find a wonderful partner to share your life with. May your marriage be filled with love, laughter, and mutual respect, as you navigate life’s ups and downs together. Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness.

45. To my dear nephew, congratulations on your wedding! Not everyone gets to meet their perfect match, so I am so delighted to see you get married to yours. May the next chapter of your life be filled with love, trust, and joy, and may you always be there for each other through life’s twists and turns. Wishing you both a wonderful life together.

46. Congratulations on the gorgeous wedding, ( names of nephew and partner )! As the next chapter of your lives unfolds, may your love and commitment to one another only grow stronger. Remember to cherish the little moments and celebrate your love every day. Wishing you both a lifetime of love, happiness, and beautiful memories.

47. Congratulations, ( name of nephew )! It’s been a delight watching you grow, and, now that you’re ready to embark on the adventure of a lifetime, I can’t help but feel a bit emotional.

Before I start crying here, there’s one thing I want you to remember: a successful marriage is like a well-timed joke — it requires perfect delivery, understanding, and laughter. Wishing you both a lifetime of love, happiness, and successful punchlines!

48. ( Name of nephew and his spouse ), congratulations! As you go on this wonderful journey with each other, remember that a happy marriage is like a game of chess—strategic, thoughtful, and sometimes, you have to make a little sacrifice for the greater good. However, don’t forget to have fun.

May your love be your queen and your marriage your kingdom. Best wishes for a lifetime of happiness!

49. Dear ( name of nephew ), on your wedding day, I wish you and your wife a lifetime of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. May your marriage be a beautiful garden: full of vibrant colors, sweet fragrances, and the occasional weed that you tackle together. Congratulations!

50. On this momentous day, I am filled with joy and pride as my nephew and his partner embark on the lifelong journey that is marriage.

To Mr. and Mrs. ( last name ), may your love for each other continue to grow and flourish, providing you with strength, comfort, and warmth throughout the years. Wishing you a lifetime of love, happiness, and cherished memories. Congratulations on your wedding!

Final Thoughts

If you need to, feel free to use the samples above and modify them according to your circumstance. You can also use them as inspiration for writing your own wedding wishes for a nephew. The latter is preferable, as you can inject your personality and humor into it.

No matter the delivery, the important thing is to be genuine and heartfelt. Give practical advice if you have some. Your nephew will appreciate all the support and love you can give.

Today marks a joyous occasion as we come together to celebrate the union of my beloved nephew in matrimony. As his aunt, I am filled with pride and joy to witness this milestone and to share a few heartfelt words about the remarkable man he has become.

mediaimage

A Journey from Boyhood to Manhood

Growing up, he was the epitome of a spirited child, full of energy and mischief. I fondly recall the time we visited Disney World, and he was so enchanted that he proposed we move there permanently. That memory still brings a hearty laugh whenever it crosses my mind. Through all the years, he has remained a cherished member of our family.

Welcoming a New Family Member

When my nephew introduced us to his future wife, it was clear that their connection was profound and destined to grow. She has chosen a remarkable man to share her life with, and we are thrilled to welcome her into our family. We eagerly anticipate creating new memories and building strong bonds with her.

Words of Wisdom for the Newlyweds

As you embark on this journey together, remember that marriage is a blend of love, understanding, and the occasional compromise. You both possess these qualities in abundance, which has brought you to this beautiful moment. Continue to nurture your relationship, keep the flame of your love alive, and face challenges as a united front. By doing so, you will not only enjoy the marital bliss that I have been fortunate to experience but will likely surpass it.

A Toast to the Pillars of Support

As we celebrate this special day, it's interesting to note that according to The Knot's Real Weddings Study, 72% of couples incorporate traditional speeches into their wedding ceremonies. These speeches often become cherished memories, recounted for years to come. It's a tradition that not only honors the couple but also strengthens family ties, as evidenced by the heartfelt words shared by family members like aunts and uncles.

In the spirit of today's celebration, let's continue to cherish these moments and the words that encapsulate the love and connection we share. Here's to the bride and groom, and to a future filled with love, laughter, and happily ever after.

If The Bride’s Father Has Passed Away

It may be that you’ve been asked to give the speech because the bride’s father, who may also be your brother, has passed away. This makes your speech so much more important and meaningful.

Obviously, your speech will be a very emotional moment in the day. All the guests and your niece will expect you to talk about her dad but remember this isn’t the time to do a eulogy.

Your speech should focus on the bride herself (as a traditional father of the bride speech would) and then pay tribute to her dad in as joyful a way as possible. Even if he is recently deceased, don’t talk about his death, just talk about how much he loved his daughter and how proud he would have been of her on her wedding day.

Of course, you may have to consider keeping any tributes to the end of the speech so you don’t get choked up too soon. (Although obviously, everyone will understand if you do). As much as possible, you want to ensure the speech remains a celebration of a marriage.

If you’re struggling with your emotions, look up. It is said to be physically impossible to cry if you look up, but don’t quote us on that one.

Take a look at our Speeches and the Dearly Departed page for more advice on honouring departed family members – but please read on or check out our father of the bride speech advice to understand what else your speech needs to contain.

If The Bride’s Father Is Absent

If the bride has a difficult relationship with her father and he isn’t going to be there, today is not a day to bring up your feelings around that.

Just simply introduce yourself as the bride’s uncle and leave it at that. No more explanation is necessary.

Uncle of the Bride Speech Structure

All speeches should be unique, and based on you and the bride’s personal relationship (so no Googling for clichéd one liners), but it’s always useful to have a structure to hand as you write it.

  • If you’re first up – introduce yourself, welcome the guests, and make them laugh as quickly as possible. That first ripple of laughter will relax you and the guests.
  • Tell some funny anecdotes from the bride’s childhood (especially if it relates to the woman she is now). Remember, a loving tribute includes some affectionate teasing.
  • Pay tribute to the woman she is now, and how she got there. Recognise the good stuff, the lovely stuff, but most importantly, the qualities that make her unique.
  • Recount how you met the bride’s partner and all of the positive things they bring to the bride’s life .
  • Advice. Not always necessary but you may want to share some advice with the happy couple, or your hopes for them in the future. The advice can be poignant and meaningful, or simply silly and funny.
  • The soppy stuff . A sweet and sentimental conclusion to the speech, recapping the themes of the speech; your love for the bride and your hopes for the couple’s future happiness.
  • The toast. Traditionally it’s “to the health and happiness of the happy couple” but we prefer a more personal touch. Something that means something to them or which ties into the theme of your speech.

Uncle Speech Tips

Rule 1- Be different

Every bride is beautiful, and yes, every bride is intelligent, hard-working, and kind. What makes your niece unique ?

She may be wearing a princess dress for the day but that doesn’t mean that she is one. You love her for who she is and so does everyone in the room. Celebrate that.

Call her out for nacho-munching, overly-competitive, library-loving nerd she is!

Rule 2- Be funny

People expect the best man to be funny, but no one ever leaves a wedding thinking “I wish the speeches had been a bit less amusing”.

We all know you were very proud of how well she did in her GCSE’s, but unless there is a funny story attached, save that observation for another time.

We suggest a mix of about 70% humour with about 30% heartfelt and sincere. Of course, if her father has recently passed away this may not be possible.

If you’re looking for more ideas on how to create original humour, check out our How To Be Funny blog.

Whatever you do, do NOT resort to wedding gags ! They’re either just cringy or have been used a thousand times before.

Rule 3- Tell a story

The best speeches take us on a journey. They aren’t just a collection of ‘to dos’ and a list of random anecdotes.

Your speech needs a thread that connects everything you’re saying. It could be what you’ve learnt from the bride over the years (from a secret appreciation of Justin Bieber’s back-catalogue to how to cheat at Scrabble). Or it could be your ‘insider guide’ to how your niece operates!

Rule 4- Less is more

Edit, edit, edit.

You’ve known the bride since she was a baby so there may be many things you want to say. But don’t!

You don’t have to recognise every era of the bride’s life. In fact, some of the best wedding speeches just focus on one really good story.

We suggest you aim for about 7 minutes tops and about 1100-1200 words should be your upper limit. You can tell everyone all the stories you had to cut at the bar later.

Rule 5- Be prepared to deliver

Will there be a mic? How many people will be in the room? Do you want a full script or just some notes?

Remember, the wonderful, heartfelt, funny words you have written will need to be spoken out loud at some point, so practice! What looks good on paper can sometimes come out as a tongue twister.

Speak slowly, and don’t forget to smile. Everyone there wants you to do well, so enjoy the moment. Read our How To Deliver Like A Pro blog for further advice.

Most people would agree that public speaking isn't easy, and this is especially true when you're feeling the added pressure that comes along with giving a speech at a loved one's wedding. Not only do you have the attention of dozens (if not hundreds!) of guests you probably don't know, but you're also trying to appeal to a group of people in a wide range of ages from all different phases of the couple's lives. What's more, you want your speech to delight the couple of the hour and be as appealing to your group of friends as it to the newlyweds' grandparents. All in all, it's a tough task.

Before you panic, know that we're here to help. Ahead, we're sharing a comprehensive guide on what you should include in your speech , how to nail your delivery, and questions to consider to get the brainstorming process started—all from noteworthy speakers, well-established speechwriters, and wedding planners (who have seen it all).

Wedding Speech Template

Every great wedding speech has one thing in common: the right flow. Factor in these guidelines to help you find your own organic rhythm.

Open With a Statement or Question

Don't lead with a joke or a reference to how nervous you are. "The goal is to engage your audience, not make it a boring one-way message," says award-winning motivational speaker Jaime Pfeffer . "You'll lose them if you do this."

Introduce Yourself

After your opener, introduce yourself, says Fallon Carter , a wedding planner, even designer, and professional speaker. "A lot of times, people don't know who is speaking, and they don't know their relationship to the bride or the groom," she says. "It's really important to identify yourself, so make sure you've prepared something."

Address Your Audience

As speaker and life strategy coach Mark Black, CSP , points out, focusing on yourself only enhances nerves. "Instead, concentrate on your audience and how you want them to feel. This will help you to speak from the heart, allowing your speech to do what it's supposed to do: Make the couple feel special while also engaging the audience."

Focus on a Few Points

Seasoned speaker Susan Bender Phelps, CEO of Odyssey Mentoring & Leadership , says her top guideline is to select one to three aspects of the newlyweds that you love and appreciate, along with no more than three short stories to illustrate each of these points (or that one point). "The simple, succinct story or stories where the bride and groom are the hero will work best." This is an excellent way to structure your speech and keep your message focused.

How Long Wedding Speeches Should Be

The ideal length for a speech is three to five minutes, with five minutes being the absolute maximum you should speak for. That's it. "I’ve never been to a wedding where anyone said, 'That was a great wedding, but the best man speech was just too short and that  ruined  it,'" says David Litt , the speechwriter for former President Barack Obama and author of Thanks, Obama .

Carter agrees: "I always say anywhere between two and five minutes—and no more than five minutes," she says. "You want to keep things short and sweet." It's just as important to keep in mind when the speech will take place when determining length, since toasts are often timed with meal courses: "Be mindful of how long a course generally takes or how long it takes people to eat," Carter adds, noting that most courses last between 15 and 20 minutes and that several speeches have to fit inside each window. "If there are other people speaking, you want to be mindful and give them space."

Wedding Speech Tips

Now that you've established the right framework for your words, take note of these essential tips for acing the delivery from a few speaking pros.

Rehearse Regularly

The better prepared you are, the more confident you'll be and the better your speech will be, says author and professional speaker Barry Maher . A good rule of thumb is to practice the speech enough that you can remember the points you want to make and the order in which you want to make them. That way, you can look out to the crowd and make eye contact every so often.

Record Yourself Practicing

Use your phone to take a video of yourself practicing, suggests Kate Kenfield , speaker and sex educator. "It can be a little uncomfortable to watch yourself, but you'll be able to identify distracting mannerisms, such as the verbal pauses 'um,' 'uh,' and 'like'." It's also a good idea to practice your speech in front of someone else. "A second opinion can help you craft your piece and make it that much stronger," she says.

Don't forget body language! Rehearse the speech in front of a mirror and notice things like your facial expression, eye contact, and hand position.

Avoid Alcohol

Although it may be tempting to look for some liquid courage, alcohol definitely won't do you any favors, warns keynote speaker Amy Morin , author of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do . "It may cause you to slur your speech and forget your lines, so wait until after your toast to celebrate," she advises. If you need a drink to loosen up the nerves or can't refrain from participating in a toast without being rude, stick to one glass of Champagne before you address the crowd.

Use Nerves to Your Advantage

A little nervousness can actually liven up your speech. "I get worried if I'm not a little nervous," says Maher. "I'll actually try to make myself a little tense to get my energy level up." The key is to harness that energy and communicate it in a positive, genuine way; tensing up to the point that you forget your words or panic won't make for a great presentation.

Be Yourself

Keep in mind that you're not putting on a show, only sharing your personal perspective. Trying too hard to force the funny can yield the opposite of the desired effect, cautions Matt Dalley, co-founder of Simply Eloped . "I've noticed that keeping it short and sweet, heartfelt and warm, and coming across as authentic and focused on the couple is something we are all capable of and generates some very wonderful moments," he says.

Never Embarrass the Newlyweds

It's a wedding toast, not a roast. While this should go without saying, keep the bachelor or bachelorette party jokes out of it, and remember that grandma and possibly a few colleagues are in the audience, notes Laurie Battaglia , a keynote speaker and workplace strategist. "It's okay to look back at childhood and refer to something funny, but ask yourself if you'd like 200-plus of your closest friends knowing that story about you."

Use Your Notes

Reading your speech straight from a piece of paper is a big no-no. However, having a couple of note cards handy is encouraged. "You're likely to be nervous, excited, and exhausted, which can make you forget your lines," explains Morin. "The audience won't care if you glance at your notes. In fact, there's a good chance they won't even notice."

Wedding Speech Brainstorm Ideas

Need some inspiration? Ask yourself these questions to get the brainstorming process going.

  • Who will speak before you? After you? How will this affect the content of your toast? (Perhaps you want to include a reference to their speech, thank them for an introduction, or introduce the next speaker).
  • Is there someone you should thank for making the event possible and inviting you to speak?
  • What would you want to hear in this speech if you were in the audience?
  • Is there a favorite story or memory that the couple would want you to share with their friends and family?

Wedding Speech Examples to Make Your Own

So, what does it look like when all these elements come together? Wedding vow and speechwriter Katelyn Peterson , owner and creator of Wedding Words , offered us three examples of successful toasts to inspire your own.

Maid of Honor Wedding Speech Example

"Hi, I’m Maya, the bride’s older sister . With Lucy being three years younger, we fell right into our respective roles as sister-rivals growing up. We constantly fought over stolen clothes, monopolizing the phone back when landlines were a thing, and what boy band to blare from the car speakers. I’m still Team Backstreet Boys while Lucy is forever indebted to NSYNC.

Looking back on those memories, I should have stepped up and granted Lucy permission to wear my favorite sweater for picture day, to hand her the phone once in a while, and to let her play, 'Bye Bye Bye.' Even I can admit that’s a good one. But despite Lucy being the younger sister, she has always been more patient, more accommodating, and more thoughtful than me. And that’s because when it comes to the people she loves, she’s all in.

She’s the one to prioritize their desires. She’s the one to compromise first. And, she’s the one to support their dreams as if they were her own.

This is why it makes me so happy to know that Lucy has found a home in David. He matches her in compassion, thoughtfulness, and warmth. And I know he’ll spend his life prioritizing her desires, being ready to compromise, and supporting her dreams as his own.

Cheers to Lucy and David! May you always feel loved because you always put each other first."

Best Man Wedding Speech Example

"Hello, everyone. My name is Luke and I’m the best man . I met Robert eight years ago when I became his neighbor. His reputation preceded him as I had heard about the 'Block Party King' before my closing papers were inked.

Rob has never been the guy to wear fancy clothes. In fact, I’m still in shock seeing him in that tux tonight. And he’s never been the guy to show off even though the work he’s put into his vintage Mustang could make Henry Ford himself envious.

But when it comes to cooking, he should receive an award. His pulled pork is a staple at our summer block parties and his homemade barbeque sauce has remained our neighborhood’s best-kept secret. But the most satisfying part about his delicious dishes is that there’s always plenty to go around. And Rob makes sure your plate is never empty. I have no idea how he pulls it off, but Rob has a covert ability to scoop seconds onto your plate without you ever seeing him do it. I hope you all came hungry tonight, folks. You’ve been warned!

The first time I met Jasmine I could immediately tell she was an amazing person. She laughed at his jokes which I never thought anyone would get. She supported his career and the nonstop travel involved. But most importantly, whenever we’re all hanging out, Jasmine is the one always topping off Rob’s plate with more pasta, more chicken, more of everything. When she’s around, it’s never empty.

And that’s when I saw what a perfect match they were for each other. I know they will always put each other first, make sure their needs are met, and will never allow the other to go hungry.

So let’s raise our glasses to toast the newlyweds! As you begin this next chapter together, may your plates and your hearts always remain full."

Father of the Bride Wedding Speech Example

"Good evening, family, and friends. I’m Daniel Lee, the father of the bride. I’d like to welcome you to this special occasion where we get to celebrate the love between my daughter Allison and her new wife, Kristin.

Standing up here today, I’m reminded of all the moments that led to this significant one. The dance recitals that ended with standing ovations and the soccer games that concluded with winning scoreboards.

But, while those were fun and rewarding times, those aren’t the moments I cherish most with Allison. The memories that make me smile the brightest are those in-between the big stuff moments. It’s the makeshift magic shows in our living room using a bedsheet that Allison confiscated from our linen closet to convert into a curtain. It’s the countless tea parties she hosted with exclusive invitations just for me and her beloved stuffed bear, Buttons. And it’s the way she’d beg to stay up for just five more minutes but was asleep on the couch by minute number two.

Those everyday, blink-and-you’ll-miss-them moments with Allison are the ones that gave color to my life and filled my heart with a happiness I never knew could exist.

So, my beautiful daughter, as you begin your life with Kristin today, I have one wish for you: May your warmest memories come from the ordinary moments throughout your marriage, and may those moments give you a reason to smile brighter every day. Cheers! I love you both." —Daniel

What Not to Say in a Wedding Speech

Your job when delivering a wedding speech is to keep things light—tell an anecdote, make an emotional connection, then wish the couple well before you close out. Anything that doesn't feel definitively positive should be avoided. "I would advocate against bringing up negative details, specifically past relationships or past spouses," says Carter. "Skip anything that you wouldn't want to be physically recorded and played over and over again—this is a rule of thumb."

Keep it light, delicate, and present- and future-focused, Carter adds. "If you're going to go into the past, make those stories really intentional," she says. "Bring those stories back to who they are now. Your mission is to create a great environment and vibe and to potentially give some information about one of the newlyweds, so that it's enlightening for all guests."

A great uncle by marriage is what?

The half-brother of one’s parent is referred to as a half-uncle. The brother of one’s mother is known as a maternal uncle. The brother of one’s father is referred to as a paternal uncle. Uncle-in-law can refer to either the uncle of one’s spouse or the husband of one’s aunt or uncle. A great-uncle, granduncle, or great-granduncle is the brother of one’s grandparent.

An uncle is typically thought of as a male relative who is either married to or a sibling of a parent. Second-degree relatives include uncles, who are blood relatives. The female counterpart of an uncle is an aunt, and the reciprocal relationship is that of a nephew or niece. The word “avunculus” refers to a relationship within an immediate or extended family and is derived from the Latin word “avus,” which is short for “grandfather.”.

Children in some families and cultures might address their parents’ cousins as uncle (or aunt). In some cultures, such as the cultures of the Aboriginal Australians, it is also used as a title of respect for older relatives, neighbors, acquaintances, family friends, and even complete strangers. Using the term in this way is a form of fictive kinship.

Avunculate (also spelled avunculism or avuncularism) refers to any social institution where a man has a special bond with the children of his sisters. Depending on the society, (1) this connection can be formal or informal. Early anthropological studies concentrated on the connection between the avunculate and matrilineal descent; more recent studies have expanded to take the avunculate into account in general society.

What is the most crucial speech at a wedding?

What is the most crucial speech at a wedding?

1. The father of the bride or parents of the bride The father of the bride speech is often one of the most special and tear-jerking speeches at the wedding reception—and it’s usually the first toast given. The father of the bride will typically start off by welcoming guests and thanking them for coming.

Mapping out the perfect wedding reception timeline is an art. You want the wedding day to flow from beginning to end and offer numerous memorable moments along the way—one of those being the wedding speeches. Part of crafting the ideal reception timeline and flow is deciding the wedding speech order. To help with that, below we mapped out the traditional wedding speech order for you and answered other pressing wedding speech-related questions too.

In spite of the fact that this is the customary arrangement for speeches, you are not required to adhere to it strictly or at all. Every couple’s situation is different. At the end of the day, this is your wedding, and you decide the right wedding speech order for your celebration. Use this wedding speech order guide as a starting point and tweak and adjust accordingly.

According to Trista Croce, a wedding planner and the founder of the upscale wedding planning and event company BTS Event Management based in Phoenix, Arizona, the father of the bride typically delivers his speech first at the wedding reception. This is due to the fact that the wedding was typically hosted by the bride’s parents. However, for many couples, this may or may not be the case. Often the groom’s parents pitch in for wedding costs, or the couple may cover everything themselves. Therefore, the decision of who should start speaking first in these situations really rests with the couple. They can go with the best man, the person hosting the wedding, or, if they want to follow tradition, the groom’s father.

Wedding Speeches: Who Says What? Welcome the guests he is hosting and thank them for coming. Welcome the bride’s partner into the family and lead the toasts to absent friends and family. Compliment the bride, tell some heartfelt stories about her, and say how proud you are.

The wedding speeches are usually given at a couple’s wedding reception, either before or after the meal. Getting the order of the speeches at a wedding right is important for the smooth running of the day.

There are no set rules when it comes to the wedding speech order and who says what in wedding speeches; however, if you are looking for guidance, we spoke to Marc Blakewill from All Write on the Night, who gave us a breakdown of when each speech should traditionally be, what it should include, and the best time to have your speeches during the reception.

The traditional wedding speech order goes: father of the bride, groom, best man, and other toasts. “In same-sex weddings, it is also common for both partners to speak, but sometimes only one does,” explains Marc. If you’re having an LGBTQ+ wedding, you can decide on an order that works best for you. We’ve covered all the different ways same-sex couples can reinvent the speech section of their wedding.

Start planning early. Introduce yourself and how you know the bride and groom. Thank the hosts, guests, and wedding party; congratulate the couple. Make it personal. Think of three traits with three stories. Talk about the couple. Have a beginning, middle, and end. Consider your audience.

Someone you love is getting married, and you’ve just been asked to give a speech at the wedding. What an honor! But also, if you’re not used to giving speeches, what a nightmare! Public speaking can be scary, which is why many people prefer to avoid it. But when your bestie asks you to make a speech at his or her wedding, it’s time to rally. But now you’re wondering if you even know how to write a wedding speech! What makes some wedding speeches fun and memorable, and what makes others cringy and fall flat? We’ve got you. We’ve put together the ultimate guide for how to write a wedding speech, focusing on things you definitely should do, things you definitely should not do, and then how to deliver your killer wedding speech like a pro.

If you’re wondering how to write a wedding speech, here are a few “dos” to keep in mind.

If you don’t know how to write a wedding speech but the bride just asked you to give one, this is not the time to procrastinate. Public speaking is one of the top fears many people have, so it’s likely you’ve avoided giving too many public speeches before this. And unless you’re a performer or a veteran improv comedian, you might not do too well winging this one. If you get nervous in front of an audience (as most of us do), the best defense against freezing up when you take the mic is being prepared.

“To the bride and groom, may I wish you health, may I wish you happiness, may I wish you wealth—and everything else you could wish for.” “May your love always be added. May it never be subtracted. May your household multiply and may your hearts never be divided!”.

If you’re planning on giving a wedding speech, then ending with a wedding toast can be a really nice touch.

Finding the right words for a wedding toast can be tough. It completely depends on what the happy couple is like as to whether you want it to be funny, sentimental, or traditional.

We’ve rounded up all our favorite wedding toasts, so you’ll have lots of options. You’ll find everything from wedding toasts from parents that are ideal for the father of the bride speech to toasts from the groom to his new spouse. If you’re a little nervous, there are plenty of short and sweet options; if you’d like something more elaborate, check out some of our rhyming toasts. Most of these traditionally refer to a bride and groom, but it’s easy to mix them up for all LGBTQ+ couples.

Wedding etiquette in the South is nothing to be messed with. It starts the moment we say “yes,” and it ends well after we say “I do.the moment we say “yes,” and it ends well after we say “I do.” And bet your britches we don’t miss a beat, lest those familiar with the Emily Post Institute take note.

To be fair, wedding etiquette isn’t just one-sided. Sure, brides have their own overwhelming set of rules to follow, things like when to send thank-you notes and how much to tip wedding vendors. But guests are also fraught with wedding worries. We’re jolted awake at night in a cold sweat, thinking, “Did I send the RSVP in time?” or “But what if someone else gives the steak knives?”.

And when it comes to something even as simple as sending a wedding card (which, to be clear, is best sent before the wedding, much like gifts), even the content is taken quite seriously. For example, it was once taboo to say or write “Congratulations” to the bride. This is because it implied she was lucky to have found a husband at all. But it’s perfectly fine to say it to the groom. Hmph. (But he is the lucky one, we joke.)

Uncle of the bride wedding speech – How to write it an uncle to niece wedding speech?

One of the big moments in life is a wedding. Whether you’re getting married or someone you know is getting married, there’s something grand about moving forward with the amazing elements of nuptials. If you’re the uncle of the bride, you may be asked to give a wedding speech. If you were asked today, would you be ready? Most people aren’t ready to give a speech, and therefore things can become quite difficult to manage.

With that in mind, you’ll want to look into how to write an uncle to niece wedding speech. The following will help you get a handle on how to work through a speech, so that you are able to gain the upper hand in your discourse. If you are not good at public speaking, or you simply aren’t sure how to move forward, you will no doubt like a few of the things that you can do with a few notes at the helm.

First Things First, Talk About Yourself

Ah yes, you’ll need to talk about yourself. The day is not about you, obviously, but you should talk about who you are. Just in case no one knows you that well, or if you’re in a large group. You should discuss who you are, and how you found out about the bride’s birth and how proud you are to be a part of the family. You should also discuss how it’s an honor to be able to speak on a such a grand event.

Talk About Growing Up

Growing up, if you have experience with the bride, going on trips etc., talk about that. Talk about how she has grown up to be a smart, interesting woman, and that she even taught you a few things about life. You’ll be surprised by how many memories can fit into this arena, and you can talk about growing up yourself, and more. You’ll find that a little bit of an anecdote goes a long way here.

Move Into Love

The next thing that you should work on is simple, talk about love. Talk about how amazing love is, and how marriage is so special. Talk about your own marriage if you’re married. If you’re not married, talk about how the bride has shown you that love exists out there, and that it’s ok to love yourself, but that there is someone out there that will one day marry you as well.

Get To the Point

No one wants to speak too long. With that in mind, you should talk about a few things and then drop out. Once you feel that you’ve said a few things, or enough, go into a closing statement. Close with special notes on how to remain in love, or how amazing it is to prolong love and marriage. Wish the bride and groom well, and then even offer a toast if you’re doing this during the reception. There’s something wonderful about a wedding, so make sure that you remain jovial throughout. Go through a few drafts of the speech, say it out loud in a mirror, and you’ll be ready.

The secret to a perfect wedding officiant speech (with examples)

Published Wednesday, Oct. 5th, 2022

Written by Jessica Levey

Find the perfect wording for your wedding officiant speech or wedding ceremony script by thinking of a wedding ceremony as a theater play, with you and your couple performing unique roles. Use this simple advice for first-time officiants to write an original wedding script, using examples of the invocation, vows and rings exchange, pronouncement, and more, from some of AMM's most popular ceremony scripts and outlines.

A bride holding a large bouquet of flowers holds hands with her new husband in front of the wedding arch and wedding officiant in the moments following their marriage ceremony. The newlyweds are smiling at each other. They are outdoors, in front of a large leafy green hedge on a sunny day.

Write a memorable wedding officiant speech or wedding ceremony script with this simple advice from the pros.

A sked to officiate a close friend or relative’s wedding ceremony, but have no idea what to say (or do) during your speech?

First off, congratulations on being asked to officiate! It’s a huge honor to be chosen to conduct a wedding or vow renewal ceremony. As you’ve probably guessed, couples generally ask someone special to officiate, someone who’s been an important part of their journey toward marriage.

So before you get too stressed out about what you’re going to say on the big day, take a moment to appreciate being asked. And remember: They chose you because they know you’ll do a wonderful job.

  • Don’t forget to order your AMM Minister Credentials and supplies to prepare.

Now, about that speech…

It might come as a surprise to learn that a wedding officiant does not need to deliver a wedding ‘speech’ at all, at least not in the traditional sense. Take a look at the typical outline of a wedding ceremony included below, and you’ll see what we mean.

Instead of delivering a single speech, the wedding officiant speaks at several important moments throughout the wedding ceremony. You’ll also instruct the couple on when to exchange wedding vows and rings, and guide them from each part of the ceremony to the next.

The secret?

It helps to think of a wedding ceremony as a theater play.  .

It helps to think of a wedding ceremony as a theater play, instead of as delivering a speech. Although you will need to do some talking, you can keep things conversational and collaborative.

Like a play, each person on stage has a unique role, and everyone will take turns delivering their lines from a script. (Professionals call this a wedding ceremony script. ) Most importantly, the officiant will act as the stage director of a ceremony, rather than just another actor.

The officiant’s longest speaking part is usually the ‘invocation.’ This is when you’ll welcome guests, talk about the meaning of the day, and share a few details about the couple’s love story. This is often the part of the wedding ceremony people are thinking about when they refer to an ‘officiant’s speech.’

The ceremony outline below includes examples from several sample wedding ceremony scripts.

This outline can help you better understand what to say on the big day, and the officiant’s important role as a ‘director’ in guiding the wedding ceremony.

Outline of a Wedding Ceremony  with sample scripts

Part One: The wedding ceremony begins. The wedding officiant welcomes guests, introduces the couple, and talks about the meaning of the day and the couple’s relationship. This part of the ceremony is probably the most similar to a traditional speech or toast.

Officiant to Guests:

"Dear friends and family, we are gathered here today to witness and celebrate the union of [PARTNER A] and [PARTNER B]. In the years that they have been together, their love for each other has grown, turning them into the couple you see before you. Now, they are ready to spend the rest of their lives together as husband and wife."

Officiant to the Couple:

"A true marriage begins well before the wedding day, and the efforts of marriage continue well beyond the ceremony. A brief moment in time and the stroke of the pen are all that is required to create the legal bond of marriage, but it takes a lifetime of love, commitment, and compromise to make marriage durable and everlasting."

Today you declare your commitment to each other before family and friends."

( Taken from the full sample wedding script: Short Non Religious Wedding Ceremony With Heartfelt Invocation )

Declaration of Intent

Part Two: The couple publicly declares their intent to marry, guided by the officiant.

Officiant to the Couple:

"With this wisdom – and your love - in mind, I now ask you:"

Officiant to Partner A:

"(Partner A), do you welcome (Partner B) to be your (wife/ husband/ spouse), and your cherished best friend?"

( Partner A responds ‘I do.’ )

Officiant to Partner B:

"(Partner B), do you welcome (Partner A) to be your (husband/ wife/ spouse), and your cherished best friend?"

( Partner B responds ‘I do.’ )

( Taken from the full sample wedding script: Lighthearted Wedding Ceremony Script with Funny Reading on Marriage )

Vows Exchange

Part Three : The couple exchange their wedding vows, either by repeating after the officiant or by reading personal vows written before the ceremony.

"Your wedding vows are an outward sign of your love and commitment. While there is a legal aspect of this wedding, a signed document does not create a marriage. What creates a marriage is the promises made and kept in your hearts.

As you look lovingly at each other, you’ll speak the promises that you’re pledging for a lifetime."

"(Partner A), please repeat after me:   Today, I give you my heart to hold and my life to keep I take you as my partner in life and with this promise: I will support you and encourage you, during the good times, and the trying times. I will laugh with you, and cry with you,  And love you faithfully, for all the days and sea sons ahead of us both."

(This section is repeated for Partner B )

( From the full sample wedding script: Fall Wedding Ceremony Script with Reading From "Harvest Moon" )

Rings Exchange

Part Four: The couple exchanges their wedding rings, sometimes this is combined with the vows.

"The wedding ring serves as a reminder of the promises you make today to each other.

The circle is a symbol of an eternal bond -- there is no beginning and no end. That means you two are stuck with each other!"

"(Partner A), place this ring on (Partner B)’s finger and repeat after me."

"I give you this ring as a symbol of my commitment and devotion. I choose you to share in my life’s journeys.  I give you this ring as a pledge to love you,  today, tomorrow, always, and forever. With no take-backs.

( Partner A repeats each of these lines in turn)

( From the full sample wedding script: Funny Wedding Ceremony Script with Simple Unity Ritual )

Pronouncement

Part Five: The wedding officiant says a few closing words on the importance of marriage and love, offers any final blessings, and pronounces the couple officially married.

"Now that you have joined yourselves in matrimony, may you strive all your lives to meet this commitment with the same love and devotion that you now possess.

By virtue of the authority vested in me by the State of (Name of State) and American Marriage Ministries, I now pronounce you husband and wife (or "spouses for life," or whatever descriptors the couple prefers)"

Bringing it all together

As you can see, there’s no need for you to stress out about writing a complicated speech!

The purpose of the wedding ceremony is to keep the focus on the couple, not the wedding officiant. You will need to do some talking, but you can keep things collaborative and conversational. You do not need to deliver a monologue, or a speech in the traditional sense.

Your role as officiant is to lovingly guide and direct the couple through each part of the wedding ceremony, while sharing details of their love story with their guests.

Congratulations on being asked to officiate, and don’t forget to have fun!

The Flourishing Tree

Exploring the nature of god.

The Flourishing Tree

For my nephew and his bride on the eve of their wedding

My dear nephew and his bride,

Your wedding is tomorrow. You won’t have time to really read and take this in today, but it’ll be here when you do.

It’s hard to imagine that the little blond baby I fell head over heels in love with at the hospital not that long ago is ready to take a bride, but the two of you have declared your intentions to walk together from now on. Your new life as husband and wife begins tomorrow.

To wish you well along your journey together, I’ve asked some friends to share their advice with the two of you. I’m including some of my own thoughts, as well as some “white wedding-y” flower photos, all taken since you two first met.

hydrangea2013FT

You may hear, especially this first year, that the first year of married life is the hardest. That may be true for you, as your final year of college will bring its own special kind of stress and difficulties. But don’t get complacent after you’ve made it through the first year: it’s not necessarily true that the first year is the hardest. Marriage will always take effort. Expect ups and downs throughout your marriage. There will be good days and bad days, good years and tough ones. Agree from the start that you will weather these together.

orchid2013FT

Marriage is not a contest or a competition. At times, one of you may bring more to the relationship than the other. Accepting that you won’t always contribute 50-50 will save you from many tears and frustrations.

Liliesincolor_2014_FT

You are at the same time still young but also grown and ready to make life-changing decisions. Know that you will both change—possibly a lot—in your twenties. Your hopes will change. Your dreams will change. Your goals will change. May you grow stronger together as you encounter these inevitable changes.

Because you are marrying now, before you have figured out your vocations and avocations, you will likely have to make sacrifices for the happiness of your spouse. It may feel too hard sometimes to put your personal dreams on hold, but expect there to be times (maybe years at a time) when your personal goals and dreams do not get to come first.

Texturedbloomsincolor_2014_FT

I know it’s hard to imagine not wanting to be together all the time, and you should enjoy each other’s company and enjoy many of the same hobbies and activities. But also give yourselves time and space to cultivate interests that you don’t both necessarily share. Think of this space in your marriage as a way to bring out the best in each other. As counterintuitive as it may seem, these differences can enrich your marriage and make you stronger together.

EasterGardenOrangeBlossom2015_FT

Your marriage isn’t all about you. You are part of something greater than just the two of you. I hope you’ll find a way to bring your strengths as a couple to share with those around you. And I hope you’ll lean on your faith to help you learn how you are to love yourselves and others as fully as possible. Henri Nouwen wrote it beautifully:

… I have love to offer to people, not only here, but also beyond my short, little life. I am a human being who was loved by God before I was born and whom God will love after I die. This brief lifetime is my opportunity to receive love, deepen love, grow in love, and give love. Finding My Way Home, 139-40

Speaking of faith, I hope you won’t ignore its importance in your relationship. God’s love is a perfect love and can teach you how to love each other even when you don’t really much like each other. A faith community is also a vital way to grow together, develop abiding friendships, and find mentors and other couples who can hold you accountable for your actions within your marriage. Many of my friends who married young attribute their successful marriage to a strong faith and the communities of faith that have supported them in difficult times.

gardenia22015_FT

I could ramble on, but I’ll stop here. I wish you joy. I love you. I pray you will, together, be exceptional.

As promised here is some advice from friends across the country. Some have had long and happy marriages. Some have learned hard lessons in divorce and remarriage. All have walked the road ahead of you and have wisdom to share with you.

On changing (for good and for bad)

  • “My grandmother told me when I got married (at 19 years old) that whatever they do when you get married they will keep doing. Whatever they do NOT do, they will continue NOT doing. Don’t expect people to change when you get married.”
  • “We are always developing as individuals and as couples. Never stop trying to ‘get to know’ your partner. You are both new people every day.”

On inevitable fights

  • “Using slogans such as ‘How important is it?’ would have resulted in fewer stupid arguments and less resentments resulting from the petty stuff we might notice when we are younger.”
  • “Pick your battles. Everything is NOT worth a disagreement. This advice has helped us to have almost 20 years of happiness.”
  • “I think the word ‘blame’ should be eliminated from the vocabulary. The idea of blame is intrinsically crippling. That is why it is spelled B LAME.”
  • “My mantras: 1. Accept and embrace imperfection, in myself and others. 2. Refrain from personalizing—other people’s feelings are usually not due to you. They are feelings. 3. Pause before reacting. 4. Choose encouragement, not criticism. 5. In discussions, say ‘I feel’ rather than ‘You should’ 6. Approach your days with kindness, savoring and gratitude. 7. Give as you would like to receive. (an iteration of the Golden Rule, of course!) 8. Let go. Let love.”
  • “You don’t always have to be right. In 35 years it won’t matter anyway. When we got married our theme was ‘Divorce is not an option.'”
  • “My advice is to be honest and truthful but not hurtful in the process. Remember, the person you are speaking to holds the other half of your heart. So treat it with care.   There is a gentle way to address all situations and you can NEVER take back words said in spite disguised as honesty.”

On compromise

  • “Marriage is a compromise where things don’t turn out like she or he wants, but instead how the couple, as one, wants. It’s worked for 32 years and counting. There’s no more you and me ; it’s now us and we .”

On your future together

  • “Talk about money, and save money together. Start now, not later.”
  • “Do not hurry to have children.” [I would add: be willing to revisit your decision not to have children, as your desires may change over time. They may not, but be open to an honest conversation on this huge decision.]
  • “Make time to do things together. Plan mini vacations.”
  • “Remember that in marriage there are many ups and downs. There will be days you wake up and are so in love with your spouse and others you can’t seem to stand to look at them, but these times are normal and will ebb and flow. It doesn’t mean the love is gone; it returns! Stay patient and work and remember it isn’t always easy, but with God in the center of your marriage, you can conquer all!”

On luck and blessings that will keep your marriage going

  • “I know this isn’t a very Christian perspective, but I feel extremely ‘lucky’ that our marriage has been what it is. We were so young and naive.”
  • “These are the only things I can think of that are authentic and sincere: May you laugh together every day, find things you love to do together and separately, and grow up together.”

To all the rest of you reading this, what advice, blessings or well wishes would you add to send off this young couple into their marriage?

I love this post. Good Luck and Best Wishes to your sweet nephew and his bride.

And to the good and loving auntie; a big, big hug from me to you. Enjoy the special day with your family – may it hold many blessings for you all to share.

Thanks for your kind words and your well wishes for the groom and bride. I hope it’ll be a day full of blessings for them (and I hope for no rain).

How to Crush Your Brother of the Bride Speech

Brother of the bride giving a speech during wedding reception.

  • Christin specializes in writing gift guides and shoppable articles for The Knot.

  • She has written for such publications as The Bump, Parents, VeryWell, Parade and LittleThings.

Brothers and sisters share a special bond that only grows as they get older. Whether you're her older brother or younger brother, you've probably been protective of your sister over the years. Now, she's tying the knot, and she's asked you to give a brother of the bride speech.

Maybe your speech will be in lieu of a father of the bride speech . Or, perhaps you and your sister were super close growing up so you're giving a special toast . Either way, giving a wedding speech is an honor; your sister and her new partner want to hear what you have to say, and they want you to share your thoughts with all of their guests.

Although the brother of the bride speech isn't always a common speech given on a wedding day, you can certainly squeeze in between the best man speech and any other toasts —or you could consider giving your speech at the rehearsal dinner instead of the wedding reception. Here's everything you need to know about giving a speech at your sister's wedding.

How Long Should a Brother of the Bride Speech Be?

If there's one thing that can be said about weddings, it's that they tend to follow a strict schedule. Wedding coordinators try hard to hide that from guests, but in reality, everything needs to occur within a certain time frame in order for the day to flow smoothly.

So the goal isn't to get up there and orate for 30 minutes about every memory you've ever shared with your sister. Instead, aim to make your speech last no more than 5 minutes. That should give you enough time to thank everyone you'd like to thank in your wedding toast, provide a few memories or anecdotes about your sister, and say anything that feels important to you.

How to Write a Brother of the Bride Speech

If you're stumped when it comes to speech writing and you don't know what to say in your brother of the bride speech, try breaking it into three parts: first, thank anyone you'd like, such as your sister and future brother-in-law or sister-in-law. Then, give some context about your relationship with your sister; share a sweet story or talk about the first time you met her partner. What did your sister tell you about them? What was your first impression (assuming it was favorable)? Did you know they were right for one another? And finally, wrap up your speech by providing some brotherly advice.

Find your kind of venue

Start by giving thanks.

As the brother of the bride, you can certainly begin your speech by thanking everyone for coming. Make it personal by going a bit deeper. If you were included in a bachelor party or other event for your sister's partner, thank them and tell them you had a great time. Thank your sister and her partner for putting together a beautiful day, and thank any in-laws who traveled from far away to share in your sister's special day.

Talk About Your Sister

Now it's time to highlight the special relationship you share with your sister. Was there a time in childhood that was particularly funny or poignant? Did your sister fantasize about her wedding as a little girl? If so, share that. Don't be afraid to joke about the fact that she wanted to marry at 14 or have 10 kids. Everyone loves a bit of humor. But just remember to avoid anything your sister might view as embarrassing.

Share a Parting Thought for the Newlyweds

Finally, give your best wishes to the couple. Talk about how marriage isn't always perfect but it's the trying times that bring a couple closer together. If you know your sister and her partner both want children, talk about how you can't wait to meet their future kids. Or, share a poem or quote that's particularly moving to you.

Couple's first touch moment on their wedding day

Brother of the Bride Speech Template

Still stumped on where to begin? Consider using this simple speech example as a starting point:

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, my name is [name] and I'm [bride's name]'s brother. I'm honored to have been asked to speak to you today, and I'd like to personally welcome each and every one of you and thank you for coming.

Growing up, [sister's name] always dreamed about getting married. She must have dressed up as a bride for at least three Halloweens, if not more. She often talked about her desire to have a ton of kids, and she started babysitting for money when she was just 10 years old. Yes, 10. She's always been amazing with kids.

So when she met [partner's name], who wasn't scared off by her desire for a large family, everything just clicked. Watching them today, sitting side by side, and seeing the look in their eyes and the excitement on their faces, it's obvious they were made for each other. [Partner's name] is her best friend, her confidante and her life partner, and for that, I'm so grateful and happy for my little sister. [Sister] and [partner], I love you and wish you both the best.

How to Give a Brother of the Bride Speech

You've written your speech. You've practiced your speech. Maybe you've rewritten it and practiced some more. Now all that's left to do is actually give the speech. Yikes!

If you find yourself feeling nervous on the big day, just remember to speak from the heart. Address your sister and her partner directly if the sea of unfamiliar faces makes you feel uneasy. And remember—a light joke can be clutch if you're nervous or forget what to say.

Brother of the Bride Speech Jokes

"Well, looks like the newlyweds couldn't find anyone else to give a speech, so they asked me."

"Hello, my name is [name], and I'm here today because I'm the favorite kid."

"I have one final piece of advice for you two lovebirds: Never stop laughing, even when the jokes are lame."

What NOT to Say in a Brother of the Bride Speech

As you prepare your wedding speech, keep in mind a few key things you should avoid saying:

Don't Share Private Details

As the brother of the bride, you've been around long enough to have gathered some dirty laundry on lots of wedding guests. But today isn't the day to air it. In your speech, avoid making suggestive or embarrassing jokes or comments about your sister, close family members or anyone else (yes, that includes the maid of honor).

Don't Overindulge in Alcohol Before Your Speech

Weddings are festive events where alcohol often flows freely. But it's your responsibility to lay off the whiskey shots before you give your speech. After you're done, it's fine to drink to the newlyweds.

Don't Upstage Other Important Guests

Although you will play an important role in your sister's special day, the father of the bride and the father of your sister's new partner are still the main men. Avoid upstaging or outdoing the father of the bride speeches.

Stay on Topic

For the most impactful brother of the bride speech, streamline your speech and practice ahead of time. That will ensure you say everything you'd like to say without rambling about unimportant details or worse—forgetting to include something that's important to you or your sister.

Ready for your big speech? Take a deep breath and relax. You got this, bro.

Best Funny Wedding Speeches Examples You Can Use

Funny wedding speeches – are the best way to keep the guests engaged and everyone relaxed and happy. “While you might face some challenges in writing the perfect variant, they are always worth it in the end. First, a funny wedding speech seems shorter than it actually is. Time flies by when the audience is having fun. Second, it’s more memorable. Think of the wedding speeches you can remember and it’s most likely going to be the one that had everyone laughing (or theone that lasted what seemed like for ever with no jokes).” , – Marc Blakewill , an experienced speech writer.

Give your listeners a laugh or two with these hilarious and witty wedding speech samples, and the tips you need to make your own.

Quick Navigation

It can seem daunting, but it’s worth spending the time and effort to make your wedding speech both heartfelt and funny. With the professional guidance of Marc Blakewill , an expert in crafting wedding speeches, you can navigate this with ease. Follow Marc’s detailed instructions, and you’ll confidently deliver a speech that resonates with sincerity and humor.

So, how best to write a funny wedding speech?

Tone and style

  • Mix the heartfelt and comedic – even if you want a speech that is funny from top to bottom, do include the sincere and heartfelt. Think of it like setting off the colour of a precious stone in a ring. With a bit of sentiment, you get more comedic dazzle.
  • Match it to your personality – if you’re not a natural joke-teller, don’t feel the need to have lots of one-liners in your speech. Focus more on light-hearted stories. Something that sounds like you will be more memorable and valued by the guests. It’s also easier to be “you”!
  • Keep it as original as you can – avoid the temptation to use old jokes from the internet. They tend to stick out like sore thumbs. If you’re not confident in writing one of your own, using one near the top as an icebreaker is fine. Any more than that and you’re in danger of becoming a cliché-delivery system.

It’s time to treat the blank screen or piece of paper as your friend. It’s your speech and you have the freedom to craft it how you want. How wonderful is that! So, here are some pointers on how to generate funny wedding speech ideas.

  • The location or venue – is there a joke about how far people have had to travel or how much difficulty they had finding the venue? Is the venue so posh and glamourous you thought you’d be refused entry?
  • Topical – has there just been a national celebration or sporting triumph that this wedding totally eclipses? Even if it’s a small gathering, don’t be afraid to praise the occasion to the skies. Everyone loves to feel part of something special.
  • How you met – was it at work, at college, in a bar? Bring this to life. What were your first impressions and have they been confirmed? If you’re Father of the Bride, you could talk about the day of your daughter’s birth. How you bravely dealt with all the pain and stress!
  • How long have you known each other – if it’s a long time, why not draw a parallel with something historical? Has your friendship or relationship outlasted the terms of several presidents?
  • Link the past to the present – did the bride or groom do something as a child or teenager that might explain their current career or lifestyle? Did the accident-prone kid become a nurse or doctor? Did the wannabe popstar end up as an accountant?
  • Everyday things – does the groom or bride have any weird hobbies you could mention? Or maybe a funny turn-of-phrase? Do they insist on checking the front door is locked three.times before leaving their home? You don’t need outlandish stories. Their everyday life and everyday behaviour can be a great source of humour.
  • Spoof marriage advice – if you’re the Best Man or Father of the Bride, you could give a few pieces of quick, silly advice. Personalise it to the couple and you’ll get instant recognition and laughs. Fun areas could include: too much time on the golf course; shopping like there’s no tomorrow and there’s no credit card bill; forgiving each other’s faults – the ones they can reveal now they’re married!
  • The simpler the better – your speech really can be as simple as beginning, middle and end. Warm everyone up with some opening fun remarks or jokes, make a few thanks and welcomes (not needed if you’re the Best Man), tell your main stories then finish with some more sentimental moments and a toast.
  • Link your stories – a speech that flows is more likely to get laughs. So, ensure your stories come in a natural order. This could be in time order or linked by theme e.g. group the groom’s silly little ways together, the bride’s changing childhood ambitions, etc.

Polishing it

  • Writing is rewriting – the illusion of a great speech is that it came fully formed from the writer’s head. It didn’t. It was written then re-written. So, put your first draft away and come back to it at least one or two more times. You’ll spot the stuff that doesn’t work in a heartbeat.
  • If you’re not sure of a line, lose it – be strict here. if you’re doubtful when reading it in the comfort of your living room, imagine how you’ll feel in front of an audience. The best speeches are the ones that have had dodgy lines surgically removed.
  • Read it out loud – this is the best way to find out how your speech flows. Did it feel awkward jumping from one section to another? Tweak it. Did a line leave your breathless as you struggled to the end? Shorten it. Did a joke make your smile as you read it? Keep it! Your voice is a free resource, so use it.

What To Joke About In Wedding Speech?

funny wedding speech ideas

It can be quite tricky giving your wedding speech and knowing what to say and when. With funny wedding speeches, it is also important to know where to draw the line with jokes. Below you will find a few helpful tips.

  • Select your target and build your premise around them. Funny wedding speeches may center on the strict dad, sweet daughter or straight-faced groom. The point is to keep the humor affectionate and leave heartwarming tributes towards the end.
  • Put down everything that comes to mind when you think about your target in writing. It may be their taste in music, best foods, stand out qualities, weird dress sense or obsession.
  • Turn these qualities into comedic characters. Is the groom obsessed with keeping tidy while the bride can’t account for one leg of her shoes? Will the groom do a double-take to the prices at flea markets while the bride spends like a Kardashian? Work with their contrasts.
  • Tell the guests something they don’t already know about the couple. Did the groom win a ballet competition as a teenager? Did the bride do street rap in college? Genuinely amazing yet unlikely skills for such a sophisticated couple to make funny jokes.
  • Exaggerate these happenings a little. If the couple is great or bad at a thing, then exaggerate a bit. For instance, if the groom is great at soccer, say something like, “his left leg has more coordination than New York’s traffic.”
  • Involve the guests. You could start with a comical question that includes them or mention something funny about the bride or groom.
  • Don’t forget the toast. You could insert a funny wedding quote here, would be all the better.

If your role involves you giving a speech at a wedding, use these tips as a general guideline.

  • Acknowledge the crowd: It is important to recognize your audience, make them a part of your speech.
  • Backstories: While introducing yourself, you could chip in how you know the couple, if there’s a comical story there, you could add that too.
  • Get the guests involved: Whether you’re giving funny wedding speeches as the best man or maid of honor, involving the guests is always a good idea. You could ask them a funny question that loosens them up.
  • Take a walk down memory lane: Say something about the groom or even the couple. It might have been a double date or your first meeting, but anecdotes make the best jokes when they are pulled from the truth.
  • Make fun of yourself: Be self-deprecating. If you are able to laugh at yourself, others will too.
  • Poke fun at the couple: Tease the couple, but lightly. Be careful not to cross any lines, such as talking about any of their exes or anything that could be embarrassing.
  • Make it quick: Try to keep your speech under seven minutes. Short is best, but not too short that you barely say a thing.
  • End on a high note: Get the audience on their feet as you raise a toast to the couple.

Best Man Funny Wedding Speeches Examples

If you are the best man, chances are that you share a stronger bond with the husband than the wife. Hence, the funny wedding speeches best man gives are what we call the “guys talk”, which is more concentrated on the groom. He surely has more to say about the groom than the bride, but a good speech creates a balance. He must take notice and acknowledge the bride, letting her know how sweet her groom is.

“Afford me the grace to welcome everyone here today for coming all the way to celebrate Emerald and James. It’s an honor to stand in for my brother today as his best man, and my name is Joshua. My dad is quite fascinated with the letter “J”. Our other two brothers are Julius and Jefferson (shakes head). Before I start, I want to acknowledge that my brother can be quite a stunner when he cleans up. Just.look.at.him… And the bride? Who has seen a vision more beautiful? Okay, I have a bragging right, and that’s the fact that I brought this couple together. I think I deserve an extra flute of wine. It happened on one of our many adventures at fishing, we met this beauty, my new sister. My brother was so shy he pushed me to talk to her. I think he was fascinated that a lady fishes with such expertise. Well, we chatted, and I pulled my brother into the chat. We realized that she’s blunt, sweet, smart, and funny. For a laid-back brother, I knew she is the one that can bring him out of his shell. I told him there and then to go see her father. But I think I lost my brother in the process. He never called me to fish anymore, he went with her instead (sad face). Yet, I’m the happiest today (grins). She brings out the light in his eyes. From fishing to grape picking, and many months later, you’re permanently locked together. My brother, the calm level headed genius, selfless and serious, sweet and generous, finds a wife. Who would have thought? James never had time for these things, but see! I’d die a happy man. Both of you are meant for each other, and I pray the love that binds you never breaks. Be each other’s solace always, and no mountain will be too high. I love you, brother, and I adore you, my sister. Happy married life!”

Funny Quotes For Wedding Speeches From Maid Of Honor

The maid of honor and the bride share a great relationship that’s why she snagged the MOH spot. So, we are in for one of the most hilarious wedding speeches because there’s a lot to tell. From growing up to going through life and all the escapades, the maid of honor speech is a funny yet emotional one.

The maid of honor uses every information and public worthy stories at her disposal to pay tribute to the bride. She also goes ahead to mention the groom to understand his luck, even as she makes the guests laugh. See the perfect example below.

“It’s my sincere pleasure to welcome everyone here today. In case you don’t know me, I’m Mackenzie, the maid of honor and bride’s best friend. But I know practically everyone here today. So, I and my friend, the bride (Emerald) made a pact many years ago that we’d be each other’s maid of honor. She said even if we were pregnant and ready to pop, we’d still fill that slot for each other (smiles). Well, here I am today, after many years fulfilling that duty, because that sweet man swept her off her feet. In truth, I don’t know how I and Emerald remain, friends since we met in college. Our meeting is a story for another day. On many occasions, she has left me at the market to go back home, because she simply hates the market. Then I get back home stressed after doing a good deed of handling both our shopping. But she burns my hands with a spoon because I want to pick one slice of beef as she cooks… So much for appreciation. Well, she’s the cook between the two of us anyway. But she compensates with some sweetness. She doesn’t ever want to see me sad, she’d give me a million slices of beef instead. All the fun times we’ve shared as we comfort each other by visiting our favorite snack spot. Times we’ve shared heartfelt talks amidst laughter while munching chips as we watch that your program into the night. I don’t know how I survived to watch that stuff. Yet, you’re everything Emerald, everything and more. Like your name, you’re loyal, peaceful, faithful, balance and love unconditionally. That I am resilient, selfless, upright and emphatic is because of you. I hope you take these qualities even as you forge on in life. I’m sure that you’ll have a successful love life and domestic bliss like your name symbolizes. I love you bestie, you don’t know how much. James (groom), you’ve found a treasure in her, I tell you. Kindly make sure you wipe the kitchen work table clean after use because if she sees it dirty, you don’t want to find out… Remember, for better or worse doesn’t mean you should hurt each other. It means you’ll hold on to each other no matter what life throws at you. Hold steadfast unto each other. Today, I wish you life’s best, and I send you forth with all my Love.”

Funny Grooms Wedding Speeches

Pass around the tissue box guys, because a well thought out groom speech will get you teary. How so? A lot of men don’t do the emotional thing, because they come across as hardcore. But watching a man look at his bride with so much love in his eyes, saying such sweet things about them… Ah!

He talks about his search, possibly many disappointments, love at first sight, or unlikely circumstances to meeting her. Then he injects humor in his speech. Maybe their first date, things they do together, etc. Everyone smiles through their tears. See an amazing template example.

“Let me start by welcoming everyone to this blissful occasion of my wedding. If you’re wondering why I’m nervous… Well, I’m the groom, and the bills for one makes me nervous. We just love you all so much and wish you shared in our day, that we made a long guest list. That’s some bill we raked. Again, Emerald says I don’t listen, so I’m being very careful with what I say right now. I don’t want to spend my first day of married life in the dog house. But you see, I have a beautiful bride, so it’s enough to calm me. Talking about beauty, Emerald is beautiful, both in and out. And I’d say I’m the luckiest and most blessed man on the planet. I mean, who’d spill his drink on a siren, without getting a slap? I did as I was busy looking at this vision in red on the 15th of November 2010. She just smiled and said she gets that all the time, and that’s how we met. She’s also very smart, I can’t get one over her. Her brain has a timer or something because she never forgets. If I tell her to wake me in 20 minutes, I get woken at exactly that time, even if she also went to sleep. Those are the times I want to cry because can’t she just forget?! Yet, that’s one quality that makes her a force to reckon. She pushes me to be better, obsessed with time management that my life has seen a drastic change. My friends are even shocked that I made it early to my wedding — the emerald effect. How I love this woman, she complements me perfectly. I want to thank her for bringing more light into my life. I also want to thank my parent’s in-law for breeding such queen. Yes, she’s regal. They did perfect! And my parents, thank you for helping me spot gold and treasuring it. You remain idols. To everyone else, thank you for making today great and unforgettable.”

Funny Wedding Speeches From The Bride

We are halfway through the tissue box at this time because the bride is all blush and giggles — with starry eyes as she gives her speech. As a bride, your speech will be an emotional one, so a lot of humor is quite needed for a perfect balance.

You’ll talk about you and your journey to being Mrs. You’d touch on what makes you tick and the qualities that make your groom the perfect one. From these qualities, you’d make funny wedding speeches that will get your guests laughing. For some help with bride speech, we’ve given an example below.

“It is common knowledge that I find it hard to keep quiet. Well, today is my day and it won’t be an exception. So, first, let me welcome everyone that has come to share in I and James’s special day. I hope you feel as much love as I’m feeling now. Also, I would have treasured the presence of my grandma today, but I know she’s proud of me. Gran, I know you can see me from up there, I’m a big girl now (teary smile). So, permit me, but can you see my man? Call me conceited, but he’s such a hunk! I’ve had the blessing of being with this man for 5 years, and today I can call him husband (blushes). I want to thank him for being who he is. Sweet, loving, smart, meticulous and selfless. James loves me right and honors me always, except when he’s getting orange seedlings stuck in the blender. And pray to tell why he’d always fall asleep when we are watching my favorite show? But you see, that’s one of the things I love about him. Talk about support, even when it’s inconvenient for him. Babe, you challenge me and push me to be better with your lifestyle. I love you anyhow, warts and all. James has made my life fun and meaningful. I also want to thank persons who have made today a success. From my parent’s in-law that raised such fine young man, to my parents, the dream of all children. I also want to appreciate everyone that helped put today together. May you experience love so true and so pure. I love you all.”

Funny Wedding Speeches Examples For All Guests

It is within etiquette that a wedding speech must focus on the couple while talking great about them. Funny wedding speeches even do much better, because infusing jokes in your speech gets more attention. Weddings are already emotional as it is, so we’d consider these kinds of speeches as the icebreakers.

The jokes you throw on the couple depends on the relationship you share. It also depends on how much you know them, and what they can take. Great funny wedding speech brings on laughter without it going south. If you need inspiration, see some funny wedding speeches examples below.

By Chris Haywood

“Can I start my speech by welcoming the guests? Today, we are quite surrounded by most of the friends and family that have been important to us during our lives. Some have traveled thousands of miles, just to be here today. On behalf of Owen, Patrick and Bonney, Hazel and I – We welcome you all and thank you sincerely for sharing this special day with us. As about half of you will know, this is my second father-of-the-bride speech in less than a year. To misquote Oscar Wilde from “The Importance of Being Ernest” – to lose one daughter may be well considered unlucky. To lose two is careless! Well, I guess that’s OK – because my being careless is how they came to be here in the first place. Making the father of the bride’s speech, I feel a bit like a Sheik walking into his harem for the first time. I know what I’ve got to do, I just don’t know where to start. You will all be quite pleased to learn that my speech will be every bit as good as last time. In fact, my side of the family will probably remember great chunks of it! Not really, although I am following the same format. This means it will probably start badly, sag in the middle with long silences, and then trail off into a lot of incoherent rambling. To be honest, I did try to memorize this speech – but forgive me if I resort to my notes every 5 seconds. I asked for an autocue to be set up in front of me. Apparently, the wedding budget doesn’t stretch that far… and neither does my eyesight. Patrick, we are quite delighted to welcome you into the family. By now, you must be wondering what on earth you have let yourself in for. I want you to know that Hazel and I took it to you instantly. You are a kind and considerate man who deserves a good wife. Thank goodness you married Bonney before you found one! I am only kidding, of course. There is nothing in the world to match the thrill of seeing your first child born. Bonney was a beautiful baby. She still is beautiful – in every sense of the word – and she has continued to fill our lives with happiness and pride. Everyone knows that Bon is a rolling stone – and couldn’t wait to leave home and find new adventures at University. Since then she has made many firm friends, some of whom are decidedly odd – but I’ll say no more about that because most of the odd ones seem to be here today. Now, where was I? Patrick… I expect you may have noticed Pat’s getting on a bit – a few grey hairs already – so it’s taken him some time to find his Miss Right. In fact, his best man tells me he once sent his picture off to a Lonely Hearts Club. They sent it back, with a note saying they weren’t that lonely! Patrick is a rugby player – or so I am told. I took the time to ask some of his mates how good he was, where his best position was. To cut a long story short, he seems to be terrible in every position! I’m sure there’s a joke there somewhere… but never mind. I have to say that Bonney and Patrick are extremely well suited, aren’t they? They’re happy and they love each other. That should be enough to see them through life together. It has been well said that marriage is a 50/50 partnership. Whoever said that knows nothing about women and even less about fractions. I asked Pat recently what he was looking for in marriage. He said love, happiness and eventually a family. I asked Bon the same question. She replied “A coffee percolator.” She said a “perky copulator” but I knew what she meant… As you all know, fathers of the bride get to make the first speech. To be honest with you, it’s a bit like being invited to sleep with the Queen Mother. It’s a great honor – but you don’t want to do it! And what about the bridesmaids? Didn’t they look lovely, in the church? Having seen all the Ushers, I thought for a minute I’d accidentally wandered onto the set of “Seven Brides for seven brothers”. I started planning this speech a month ago. And you must feel like I’ve been delivering it equally as long. And I haven’t quite finished yet. Because my next toast is to the bride and groom. This reminds me of the wedding I once went to where the two of the guests were a minister and a priest. When the priest was offered a drink for the toast he said: “I’ll have a large whiskey please”. When the minister was also offered the same, he said “No thanks. I’d rather go with a scarlet woman than touch the demon alcohol”. The priest promptly put his whiskey back on the tray and said: “I didn’t know there was a choice!” Now I don’t want to offend anybody, so if there’s a priest or a minister present, I apologize. And if there’s a scarlet woman here, I’ll meet you in the bar in 10 minutes! Thank you for your indulgence. Without further delay, I’ll ask you to join me in a toast to my beautiful daughter, the bride, and her handsome husband, the groom.”

By John Gallagher

“Good evening everyone, for those of you that don’t know me, my name is John and I’m Katie’s dad. I am delighted to welcome you here tonight to celebrate the Marriage of Katie and Simon. I know that many of you have traveled many thousands of Kilometers to be here in Umea Umio, Sweden, with us today. On behalf of Pippa, Inga, Borje, and myself; I would like to welcome you all here today to help celebrate the marriage of Katie and Simon. I apologize if the accent is difficult for any of you but translators throughout the audience will help and the speech will be posted at the rear of the room later with copies on the internet tomorrow!! Also, I would like to thank the Priest, Inga, for the lovely service in the most beautiful church. Thank you to her boss for the good weather! I’d like to offer my sincere thanks and appreciation to all those who have worked so hard and long to help put this day together, a day which, I am sure, Katie and Simon will cherish for the remainder of their lives together. Standing here tonight reminded me of a joke. Two TV aerials met on a roof, they fell in love and eventually married. The wedding was pretty average but the reception was brilliant. OK, no more jokes!! Katie this is that point in time that every daughter fears…..what is Daddy going to talk about….is he going to tell about the time when…??!! I’m not going to tell of any of those times, but rather, I’m going to say & quote, thank you & quote! You see the one thought I’ve always been able to picture was that of today when you and I shared our little glance at one another as we were ready to start our walk down the aisle. As it was with my daughter Lucy and as it will be with my daughter Gemma, it has always been with me and always will be. I feel extremely lucky and humble in being able to say I have five great children and one special grandchild and to have them all here together gives me a sense of pride. Simon, I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome you into the family, but I’m sure you know that you have been welcome since that first day I met you at my house. Every Father hopes his daughter will find a smart, reliable, sensible, and considerate young man so I have to say, I’m a contented father, as I am delighted to see my daughter looking so happy and well today. It is a real pleasure Simon, to welcome you into our family. Many things go into making a marriage happy: Love, fidelity, trust, someone who will listen, persistence and patience, tolerance and forbearance, tenacity and stamina, forgiveness or failing that, a defective memory. It also helps if the husband is always prepared to take the blame! I’d just like to offer a few words of advice: Katie – If you want something from Simon, just ask for it. Don’t forget he’s a man and hints don’t work. Lastly, always remember, as a great philosopher once said, a man who gives in when he is wrong is wise. Whilst a man who gives in when he is right is married.”

Don’t hesitate to write the funny wedding speeches you need for that special day. Your nerves won’t get the best of you if you know what to say. Follow this well prepared guideline and are sure to be in comical wedding speech heaven in no time.

Miss Manners: Should the bride and groom be shown the best man’s speech before the wedding?

DEAR MISS MANNERS: Should the bride and groom be shown the best man’s speech before the wedding? Or, if not them, someone else?

GENTLE READER: What makes you think the best man needs vetting?

Oh, right -- he is the bridegroom’s best friend, so it is not hard to guess his notion of what should be said. Miss Manners supposes that that is the problem. Perhaps that should have been considered before he was assigned the role.

But yes, the bridegroom can inquire, in the spirit of friendship, what his buddy is thinking of saying. He could even drop some remarks about the sensitivity of the crowd, and what topics should be avoided, however amusing.

But in the end, he has to trust that his best man will do his best to please him.

(Please send your questions to Miss Manners at her website, www.missmanners.com ; to her email, [email protected] ; or through postal mail to Miss Manners, Andrews McMeel Syndication, 1130 Walnut St., Kansas City, MO 64106.)

Katie Maloney Finally Reveals Exactly Why She Fell Out with Brittany: "So Many Lies"

Vanderpump Rules ' Katie Maloney explained that the drama has to do with Stassi Schroeder's wedding.

speech on nephew's wedding

Katie Maloney  and  Jax Taylor 's heated conversation about rumors that he cheated on  Brittany Cartwright  during Vanderpump Rules  Season 11, Episode 13 brought to light another point of contention — but not one for Katie and Jax.

How to Watch

Watch Vanderpump Rules on Bravo Tuesdays at 8/7c and next day on  Peacock . Catch up on the Bravo app .

Instead, Jax confronted Katie on behalf of his then-wife: Apparently, the two aren't friends anymore. Katie and Jax further expanded on the tension between Katie and Brittany during a new episode of the  Vanderpump Rules After Show.

What happened between Katie Maloney and Brittany Cartwright?

Jax alleged on the April 23 episode of the  Vanderpump Rules After Show  that Katie "abandoned" Brittany after they didn't go to  Stassi Schroeder  and  Beau Clark 's 2020 wedding in Italy.

"For [Katie] not to respond to her texts or messages, it hurt [Brittany]. She was a big part of her life," Jax said, insisting that Katie "had no part of that situation."

"So you're mad just to be mad, or just because you're up Stassi's ass," Jax continued. "[It's] one of the two. That's the only two reasons I can think of."

Katie, meanwhile, defended her decision to stop talking to Brittany.

"We were all planning to go to Italy. We were making plans and arrangements and all that, and I remember Stassi and I were talking to Brittany for the longest time about all that, and she was very sort of avoiding the questions and didn't really want to get involved in the planning of it all, but she would still. She'd get excited and talk about it," she explained on the Vanderpump Rules After Show . "But then right up until like the days before, she became very avoidant of it all. So then the morning that we're all supposed to go to Italy, Brittany sends a message saying, 'Oh my god, we're not going to be able to make it, we didn't get the passport in time, yada yada yada. Just excuse, excuse, excuse."

For Katie, this was dishonest.

"I just feel like there were so many lies, and I don't like lies," Katie added. "I just, I f-cking hate lies, man. Like, nothing more than that. So I'm just like, you know, I need a break ... and also Jax has just been such a f-cking asshole to me for no reason."

Here's How Ariana Madix Has Been "Checking In On" Brittany Cartwright After Jax Taylor Split

Why Tom Schwartz Thinks Brittany Cartwright & Jax Taylor’s Split Was “Necessary”

Katie and Jax's drama, explained

Elaborating on her comment about Jax being an "asshole" to her on the Vanderpump Rules After Show , Katie recalled a time when her then-husband  Tom Schwartz  "accidentally posted" Cruz's name before Jax and Brittany had announced it.

"[Jax] didn't talk to him for months, and then he decided not to talk to me. I got roped into it somehow while I was throwing Brittany's baby shower, " Katie explained. "I had literally nothing to do with it, he just is such a f-cking asshole. I was just ready for a break."

A split of Katie Maloney and Brittany Cartwright.

Why did Jax and Brittany skip Stassi and Beau's wedding?

Jax shared on the Vanderpump Rules After Show that he and Brittany weren't "trying to cancel" their trip to Italy for Stassi's wedding.

As he recalled, "I wasn't gonna go because my son didn't have a passport. We thought we were gonna get the expedited passport for Cruz, it didn't come in time. So, I said, 'You know what, somebody from our family needs to be at this wedding, so Brittany, why don't you call your mom, you guys go, and I'll stay back.' Then when Brittany's mom's best friend's husband died, it was just like, you know what? It's not in the cards for us to go."

Still, Jax insisted he gave Stassi and Beau "lots of money." More specifically, "I gave them $1,000," he noted. "We said, 'I'm sorry.'"

Brittany Cartwright Wants to Be “Clear” About Jax Taylor’s Publicist After Viral Photo

Katie, however, accused Jax of "very openly talking about how they [weren't] going to the wedding; they had a golf tournament they [were] doing instead."

"It was just very kind of rude the way he was just speaking so freely to other people, not thinking it would get back to either of them," she added.

Jax, for his part, noted, "Did I handle it wrong? Absolutely. I handled it completely wrong. And I apologize. I made a mistake. Is it a reason to squash and ruin a whole friendship over? I don't think so. I don't know what else I can do."

Katie and Brittany have conflicting views on their fallout

Katie clarified that she didn't want her break from Brittany "to be permanent," but her mind was ultimately made up after "Brittany texted me once [and] asked me how the move was going," but "never checked in on me, never once asked me anything" during her divorce from Schwartz .

"So I was like, you know, I'm good on you," Katie added.

Katie Maloney Says Her & Ariana Madix's Sandwich Shop Will Open "Very, Very Soon"

Lala Kent , who appeared alongside Brittany on the Vanderpump Rules After Show , sees things differently, though.

"She says Brittany hasn't reached out and I'm like, she did reach out while you were moving and asked if you need help," Lala noted. "She'll say, 'Need help with what?' And I'm like, well, then you can't say she didn't reach out, 'cause she did. Like, you don't get to decide how and when and what people say when they reach out. So it's sometimes hard to gauge with Katie because you're like, how do I approach this? Should I reach out? And if I reach out, is the timing OK? Is what I said OK? it becomes very intimidating."

"Very intimidating," Brittany said in agreement. "She was the matron of honor in my wedding. Like, I love her so much. I still have a lot of love for her. But it's just crazy how we just don't talk anymore ."
