Over time as education changed, so have I— thanks to the endless innovations that happened to me.  Let me take you through my life and the various innovations that made me your best friend- I was born in the 1920s to help students reinforce what they learned in class. Until the 1980s, I was basically just pen-and-paper-based assignments.  The Internet was born in 1983. From there onwards, I made my stride into the ‘digital era’.

Until the beginning of 2020, I was slowly being integrated within online platforms and technology to help students learn better. Then at the onset of 2020, the world plunged into the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools shifted to a ‘remote learning’ mode of education. During this pandemic, you and I became very crucial in ensuring the continuity of our students’ learning. You all embraced creative approaches to keep the students engaged. You leveraged interactive games, virtual simulations, & more to make me engaging. Gone are the days when you, my dear teachers, would limit your homework to worksheets, textbook questions, literature reviews, and reports. Today as we stand here in 2023, there is no limit to innovative and exciting homework formats! Well, that’s from me. See you in the classrooms!”

So teachers, we heard from homework about how it has evolved over time. As it said, many innovative ways have come up to reinforce our students' learning. So, are you ready to make your students fall in love with these new school homework ideas? Let’s begin with understanding some general tips to keep your students engaged with their school homework.

1. Make it Relevant and Meaningful 

Connect the school homework to their lives, interests, or current events to make it more meaningful and relatable. For example, if it’s Christmas time, you can ask your students to explore the themes of charity, storytelling, etc.

2. Give Them a Choice

Allow students to have some choice and autonomy in their assignments. Ask them to select the format (e.g. written format in the online medium, oral format in the offline medium) in which they want to submit their homework. When they feel a sense of ownership, they are more likely to be motivated and engaged. This is how you become a 21st-century teacher who uses differentiated learning. 

3. Celebrate Their Achievements

When children get appreciated for their achievements or good behaviour, it boosts their self-confidence. It encourages them to repeat those actions. This creates a positive learning environment. Keep a freshly cut Christmas tree green and healthy over the holidays using homemade Christmas tree food . Feed the tree a mixture of 1 gallon of water, 2 cups light corn syrup, and 4 teaspoons of bleach. An even simpler recipes is a gallon of water, a can of Sprite, and a splash of bleach.

Make a Chemis-Tree

A “Chemis-tree” is a Christmas tree made using lab glassware filled with colored liquids. Basically, you fix test tubes or small flasks to a ring stand using clamps. But, there are other types of chemis-trees to make, too.

Make an Elephant Toothpaste Christmas Tree

If you add a bit of green food coloring and perform the elephant toothpaste reaction in an Erlenmeyer flask (tree- or cone-shaped) you get an elephant toothpaste Christmas tree. Start with either the kid-friendly elephant toothpaste reaction or the classic reaction .

Grow a Crystal Christmas Tree

The crystal Christmas tree is a variation of the classic charcoal crystal garden project. Cut out a construction paper or cardboard tree shape. Dot ornaments on the tree using food coloring. Mix water, table salt, Mrs. Stewart’s laundry bluing, and a bit of household ammonia. Set the tree in a shallow dish, pour the liquid into the bottom of the dish, and watch as crystals cover the paper tree.

Grow a Silver Crystal Tree

Another type of Christmas tree you can grow using chemistry is a silver crystal tree . Coil copper wire into a tree shape and soak the tree in a silver nitrate solution. Silver deposits onto the copper as delicate, sparkling crystals.

Crystal Christmas Chemistry Projects

Make a Crystal Snow Globe

Instead of making a snow globe with glitter, use real crystals that sparkle just like snow. Dissolve 5 grams of benzoic acid in 1 liter of hot water. Pour the solution into a small clear jar. Use a glue gun to affix small decorations inside the lid of the jar. Screw on the lid, seal it with the glue gun, and turn the jar over for a beautiful benzoic acid snow globe .

Make Borax Crystal Snowflakes and Stars

Dissolve borax in hot water until no more dissolves. Make snowflake or star shapes using pipe cleaners and hang them in the solution. Within a few hours, sparkling crystals cover the shapes. Remove the shapes from the liquid and set them on a paper towel to dry. Use borax crystal snowflakes or stars as holiday decorations.

Make Fake Window Frost That Does Not Melt

Mix non-toxic urea into hot water. Paint the saturated solution onto windows or mirrors and get festive frost in minutes . Clean-up only requires warm water.

Crystallize a Holiday Stocking

Soak a simple felt holiday stocking in a crystal-growing solution, let crystals grow, and dry the stocking. The result is a sparkling stocking that’s covered in crystals. Try borax, table salt, or Epsom salt crystals. Just take a cup of hot water and stir in the chemical until no more dissolves. Add the stocking, wait overnight, and remove your item.

Snow Chemistry Projects and Activities

Make your own snow.

If it’s cold outside but the forecast does not call for snow you can take matters into your own hands and make snow . Use a pressure washer for a yard full of snow or even a garden mister if you just want a few snowflakes.

Make Snow Ice Cream

If your snow is clean, a simple snow ice cream recipe is a big bowl of snow mixed with a can of sweetened condensed milk.

Make Fake Snow

Fake snow is wet just like real snow and cold if you refrigerate it, but it does not melt. All you need is sodium polyacrylate gel and water. You can find this chemical online, but it’s also the stuff inside disposable diapers or sold as a water-retaining gel for plants. It’s non-toxic and re-useable. When you’re done playing with it, just let it dry out and store the powder for another day. In addition to sodium polyacrylate snow, there are several other fake snow recipes that use common kitchen ingredients.

Ornaments and Decorations

Make real silver christmas ornaments.

This chemical reaction is a classic holiday chemistry project. Coat the inside of a glass ball with real silver. You do need a few different chemicals in addition to some clear ornaments, but the silver ornament project is simple and straightforward.

Make a Copper Christmas Tree Ornament

A simple chemical reaction plates a zinc or galvanized metal ornament with copper . Cut out a shape or form it from sheet metal, galvanized wire, or hardware cloth. Soak the decoration in a copper nitrate solution and watch the silver-colored metal change to copper.

Make Atom Paper Snowflakes

Instead of cutting out paper snowflakes, decorate using paper atoms . These holiday decorations are perfect if you are decorating for the winter holidays and want to show your love of science.

Colored Fire Christmas Chemistry

Make colored fire.

Sprinkle common household chemicals onto a wood-burning fire and watch the flames change colors. Use borax or copper sulfate for green flames. There are chemicals that change flames to any color of the rainbow.

Burn Pinecones That Have Colored Flames

Collect (or purchase) pinecones. Sprinkle borax or copper sulfate onto them before burning them in the fireplace or campfire. For less mess, soak pinecones in a bucket with either chemical and some water. Let the colored fire pinecones dry before using them or giving them as gifts.

Color Change Christmas Chemistry

Do the green to red color change chemistry demonstration.

This chemistry demonstration is called the Christmas color change reaction for a good reason. Change the color of a chemical solution from red to green and back again. You’ll need water, glucose, sodium hydroxide, and indigo carmine pH indicator.

Test pH Using Poinsettia pH Paper

Use red “petals” from a holiday poinsettia plant for homemade pH paper test strips . Test home chemicals and see whether they are acids, bases, or neutral. Chop the red leaves, soak them in a small amount of boiling water and extract the color, and dip a coffee filter in the liquid. Dry the coffee filter and cut it into strips. The strips stay red for acids and turn green in the presence of bases.

Make Gifts Using Chemistry

Make marbled paper for holiday gift wrap.

All you need is ordinary printer paper, a can of shaving cream, and some food coloring to make scented, marbled paper. Wrap gifts using the homemade marbled paper or make several sheets and give the paper as a gift.

Make Homemade Perfume

Apply chemistry for making perfume to give as a gift. Learn about the different “notes” of a perfume and get recipes for classic scent combinations.

Use your nose to make your way through this  Christmas scents guessing game . Candles, candy canes, cinnamon sticks, and other familiar holiday smells are all excellent choices to hide away in the bags for exploring through scent.

Dancing Cranberries

Save some of your holiday cranberries for a fun and fizzy  dancing cranberries experiment . This is also a great science activity for Thanksgiving, since cranberries are readily available through fall and early winter. Do cranberries float? Will they sink?

Ice Ornaments

If it’s cold enough for Christmas where you’re located, make some lovely  ice ornaments  to study how liquid water becomes a solid (and vice versa). They’ll look beautiful while they last outside, and the birds will enjoy the berries when they melt.

Jingle Bell Magnet Science

No little kid can resist jingle bells, and when you add magnets to the mix, well, it’s even more fun! This  jingle bell magnet science  activity is the perfect introduction to magnetism for preschoolers. They’ll be using magnetic wands and bells to see how many they can get on their wands! Of course, a few rounds of the  Jingle Bells  song are in order once the wands are filled.

Grinch’s Heart Experiment

Any fan of The Grinch will tell you that their own heart grew along with the Grinch’s when it grew three times that day. The fun part is creating the chemical reaction to fill the balloon in this  Grinch’s heart experiment ! 

Hot Chocolate Science

This  hot chocolate experiment  explores whether marshmallows dissolve faster in hot chocolate made with milk or hot chocolate made with water. The results may surprise you.

Snowstorm in a Jar

Create a  snowstorm in a jar  to really wow the kids this holiday season. If you live in an area that doesn’t get snow, this is a really fun way to visually show what a snowstorm might look like from the inside of the house looking out the windows.

Christmas Lava Lamps

Making  Christmas lava lamps  is as easy as pie. In fact, you probably have all the materials in your cupboard. It’s your standard oil-in-water experiment with a crafty holiday theme.

Frost in a Can

Crystal Christmas Science Experiments

You’ll find several variations of Borax crystal science projects for the holiday season, but here are a few of our favorites. The science behind them is the same, but these posts will give you a few options if you want to spend a week or so just studying crystals.

Not only are these  crystal candy canes  fun to make and learn about, but they make beautiful decorations for the tree. It requires a little patience since the Borax crystals take a few days to form and develop, but it’s worth it to see the sparkly result.

Flying Reindeer

Christmas Science Experiments: 5 Fun and Easy Holiday STEM Activities for Kids

This holiday is a great opportunity to introduce to kids some fun Christmas science experiments that they can easily perform. These STEM activities will engage future critical thinkers, problem-solvers, and innovators in science experiments into learning science experiments that may inspire them to venture into science-related careers in the future.

1. Christmas Lava Lamp

The lava lamp experiment is one of the most popular science experiments and a favorite of many kids, with an added Christmas twist to it using red and green coloring or watercolor paints. This experiment is easy and only needs a few items, like oil, water, food coloring, and original Alka Seltzer tablets.

Materials needed:

• food coloring
• original Alka Seltzer tablets
• Add food coloring to 1/2 cup of oil and water.
• Break the Alka Seltzer into two or three pieces and place them in a small cup or container.
• Slowly add tablets to the oil and water with a food coloring mixture.

According to Fun Learning for Kids  website, the oil retains the color of the food coloring since oil and water do not mix. As the tablet reacts with water, it creates bubbles of carbon dioxide that attach themselves to the blobs of colored water and bring them up and pop at the top before falling back into the glass.

2. Fake Snow

According to the Growing a Jeweled Rose  website, this fake snow is a good sensory experiment for kids.

• shaving cream
• white school glue
• peppermint extract
• iridescent glitter
• Refrigerate the glue overnight.
• After refrigerating, leave it out on the counter for ten minutes.
• Combine equal parts of the chilled glue and shaving cream in a bowl.
• Add glitter and peppermint extract for color and a wintry scent.

3. Candy Cane Oobleck

• peppering essence
• red food coloring

Procedures:

• Pour some cornflour into a bowl with cold water until you reach the desired consistency.
• Make two batches of goo (mixture of cornflour and water, and a mixture of cornflour and water with red food coloring)
• Swirl the two mixtures
• Add peppermint essence to give it a Christmas-like feeling.

According to Science Sparks , an oobleck is made of molecules arranged in long chains. The liquid will flow when the long chains are stretched, and they stick together to form a solid barrier when they are forced together.

4. Reindeer Toothpaste

This reindeer experiment from the Playdough to Plato  website will surely make the little scientists excited about chemistry. Here's how to do it:

• Clean 12-16 oz plastic bottle
• 1/2 cup of 20-volume (6%) hydrogen peroxide liquid
• Food coloring
• 1 tablespoon of dish soap
• Peppermint essence
• 1 tablespoon of active dry yeast
• Mix one tablespoon of yeast with four tablespoons of warm water. Mix until lumps are gone.
• Wait for the yeast to bubble a little.
• Squirt dish soap and add drops of blue food coloring to the plastic bottle.
• Add glitter and peppermint essence to the mixture.
• Add a 1/2 cup of the 6% hydrogen peroxide solution and gently swirl to mix it.
• Pour the yeast solution into the bottle using the funnel.

This experiment will create a foam that will reach the bottle and overflow. As the kids will play with the foam, they might notice that the bottle gets warmer. This is completely safe, and the warm temperature is caused by the reaction between the yeast and hydrogen peroxide to produce oxygen gas that is responsible for the bubble oozing from the bottle.

5. Crystal Tree

There is something magical with growing crystals and that is what Malia Hollowell showed in Playdough to Plato . She emphasized the importance of finding the laundry additive Mrs. Stewart's Bluing  for this experiment because other brands will not work.

• Mrs. Stewart's Bluing
• A dish that is large enough that can hold the tree
•  Ammonia (optional)
• green food coloring
• Cut up two cardboard trees at least 3 inches wide by 4 inches tall.
• Cut a notch on the top of one of the trees, and cut the bottom of the other.
• Paint the tree with green food coloring.
• Mix 4 tablespoons warm water, 4 tablespoons salt, 4 tablespoons Mrs. Stewart's Bluing, 2 tablespoons ammonia.
• Place the tree in the solution and wait for the crystals to grow. The first crystals could show within a few hours, but it could take several days before the tree is covered with delicate crystals.
• Add more solution to grow more crystals

Hollowell explained that the solution created a suspension that has solid particles settled out on the cardboard tree due to capillary action or the liquid's ability to defy gravity and flow upwards. Also, a combination of surface tension and adhesive forces created the crystals. Next, the evaporation of liquid molecules with ammonia as catalysis made the solution travel up the cardboard trees and evaporate. Lastly, crystallization occurred after water and ammonia molecules were left through evaporation.

Mrs. Stewart's Bluing act as nuclei or seeds for crystallization, similar to what happens during cloud formation.

A well rounded development of individual knowledge happens not only from textbooks and formal education but more from the learner’s personal experiences, individual inquisitive nature and social surroundings. Homework is an area of importance and to make it more relevant for the NCERT Books classes 6th, 7th and 8th, appropriate strategies and meaningful activities may be suggested to the schools that give more time to child to explore the environment to develop creative thinking.

These activities (like OTBA for class 9 & 11 ) would be so framed that they keep the child interested in subjects and therefore would also help in enhancing the learning power. Homework is one of the areas that need urgent attention. As the students of class VI, VII and VIII develop a certain learning style and want to know and find more and more. Efforts should be made to make homework more creative and interesting so that the students do not feel burdensome while doing the same and the ultimate purpose of providing homework is served.

A survey was conducted through questionnaire prepared by CBSE to collect feedback from parents, teachers, students and other educationists on “Alternatives to Homework at Upper Primary Level” for Class Sixth, Seventh and Eighth so that appropriate strategies and meaningful activities can be designed and suggested to schools. The questions were directed to know the ideal quantity and purpose of the homework, whether homework should be assigned in all the subjects, internet usage should be a part of the homework or not, how homework helps in teaching.

Keeping in view emerging issues, there is a need to think about giving quality homework emphasizing on acquiring applied learning skills. Few points can be kept in mind while designing a quality homework by teachers: 1, Provide students capacity building activities which are followed up and acknowledged like drawing, creative writing, making puzzles, stories, plays, online games, reading online books and craft.

2. Provide them assignment sheets which improve their reading & writing abilities. Homework must enable the student to practice a skill independently. 3. A possible discussion can be held with different children on what they would like to do at home to improve in which ever area they deem necessary. Homework must be designed in a way that maximizes the chances of its completion by the students.

4. Parents should be able to understand the child’s needs and schools suggestions on how to learn mathematics, logical reasoning, etc. by doing puzzles, writing letters, reading to elders from the newspapers, making household lists, recipe making and cooking. 5. Learners who have dyslexia or number difficulty should have practice assignments overcoming their problems.

The child in middle school have a keenness to discover more and prepare for the examination. Learning is about developing new faculties, which become useful as an adult. The years 12 to 15 are years when rules become important, and doing well, excelling are given importance both at home and in the class. As the child grows chronically his/her emotional maturity also grows and there are interests which are beyond just what lessons can give.

The homework assigned should: 1. enhance study habits and practice skills (which learners are able to perform independently) 2. reinforce necessary skills both scholastic and co-scholastic among the learners. 3. enable learners to become independent learners and thinkers and develop among them 21st century skills so that they can participate in Make in India in future. 4. lead to the improvement in the academic achievement of the learner.

5. expand on the existing knowledge of the learners and be a part of the already acquired competencies in the classroom. 6. not put unneeded pressure or stress by including new learning material or difficult material to be worked upon by learners themselves. 7. be CBSE Syllabus based and as per developmental needs of the learners. 8. not require specific resources or technology which is not accessible to all learners. 9. have clearly defined, purposeful, creative and engaging activities.

It is also advised that teachers can refer to Life Skills Manuals, Health Manuals and Environmental Education Manuals which contain age appropriate and interesting activities which can be taken up by the learners individually. These activities can be assigned to learners so as to enhance their life skills, values and make them health conscious.

Homework is needed, and necessary for a teacher to be able to follow up with each child. The correction and feedback on homework is an important input that helps both parents and children to follow up and improve in areas which are needed. The recourse extra classes, can be reduced if the homework is used for learning improvement and acquisition of diverse skills. The term ‘holiday homework’ raises a collective groan when you mention it in class. The last thing your students want to do during their holidays is spending more time with their noses buried in textbooks. But who said homework had to be a dull and dreary activity? There’s plenty of time and then some to learn concepts at school; holiday homework can focus on skill-building and be a lot more fun! Here’s a list of top creative assignment or homework ideas to help students take the ‘work’ out of homework, and replace it with a whole lot of fun! 

“Assignment 1: For the Filmy Fans”

As a life coach who holds film therapy workshops in Bengaluru, Rohit Sasvehalli believes that movies can have a deep impact on the psyche when approached consciously. “Pick a specific concept the child wants to learn about, say Apartheid. Ask them to watch a movie like Invictus to understand the tensions in South Africa. It will invoke an explorative mindset,” says Sasvehalli. Give your students a choice of topics and movies to watch, review and write an essay or make a presentation on what it got them thinking about. Surely your students aren’t about to complain about watching a movie or two!

“Assignment 2: For the Wanderlusters”

Families often set out on trips during the holiday season. A trip is often a great platform to learn about new places and new cultures. Ask your students to document every bit of their travel, discover fascinating aspects about the place they’re visiting and turn their findings into a fantastic travel presentation for the class! It could cover a long vacation or even a day trip to the museum, beach or a nearby park.

“Assignment 3: For the Bookworms”

This creative assignment may not appeal to all your students, but the voracious readers in your class will surely welcome some binge-reading over the holidays! For this set of students, assign a list of books they can review over the holidays. Encourage them to get a library membership or even a Kindle, if they’re more accustomed to reading digitally. Give them a mix of fiction and non-fiction titles that will broaden their knowledge and urge them to think. It doesn’t have to strictly follow the curriculum; books on current events will also help them get a better perspective of what’s going on in the world.

Assignment 4: For the Crafty Ones

Assignment 5: For the Volunteer Wonders

A school in New Zealand recently got its students involved in building an outdoor classroom and won an award for creativity! Volunteering as a homework idea will help them understand the kind of problems the world is facing, put things in perspective and also help them learn how to work in a team! You could give them a list of places they could visit over the holidays or plan a class trip yourself. Let them volunteer at an animal shelter, old-age home or orphanage, where they can perform different activities like maintaining the gardens, teaching other children, reading to the elderly, or even organising a performance for the underprivileged.

Assignment 6. For the Budding Philosophers

If your students are at a stage in life where they have critical future decisions to make, ask them to ‘introspect’ over the holidays. What makes them happiest? Which activities do they most look forward to? What piques their interest and what fails to grab their attention? Give them a homework idea and ask them to write a detailed summary of their interests and how they could translate into a career option a few years down the line.
