We always ask our clients to include biography pages on their websites. While these pages may seem inconsequential when compared to service and contact pages, many patients do read doctor bios before making their first appointment at a dental practice. If the services you offer are the same as other practices in your area, your biography gives you the opportunity to differentiate yourself.

What Do Patients Look for in a Dentist’s Biography?

There are two key components that should be included in a good biography: your professional accomplishments and your personal story. The former will help patients decide if you have the qualifications they’re looking for in a dentist, while the latter helps them connect with you on a more personal level.

Your biography shouldn’t read like a resume; think of it more like an introduction you might give to someone when you meet them for the first time. We’ve seen some doctors simply list their alma matters and professional memberships in lieu of writing a biography, which might satisfy one of the criteria for a good bio, but it certainly doesn’t foster any kind of personal connection.

Here’s the minimum of what you should include in your biography:

When it comes to sharing personal information, there’s certainly no need to go into more detail than you feel comfortable with, but patients like to know a little bit about who their dentists are as people. It’s not so much what you say about yourself, but the fact that you share a little bit of who you are. No one will read your bio and say, “Well, Dr. Smith loves playing soccer and I do too, so I’m going to choose his practice!”, but getting to know you as a person creates a more comfortable, familiar relationship with patients.

Writing the Perfect Biography

Now that you know what you should include in your biography, let’s talk about how to write it. Here’s a brief template to use if you’re not much of a writer:

Hi, I’m Dr. Mary Brown. I grew up in ___________(city, town) and attended college at ___________________. From there, I went on to dental school at ___________, completing my degree in ________________(year). After that I trained at ___________ for ________ years in the residency program. (Or I worked as an associate at _____ for _____ years). In _________(year) I relocated to _______________ with my husband/wife. We have _____ kids and enjoy… (lists some hobbies and interests).

For the 2nd paragraph, list what makes you passionate about your profession. If you work in a multiple doctor practice it’s best if these don’t all sound the same. Perhaps you love technology and how it benefits your patients. Maybe you have a passion for continuing education and the benefits it brings your patients. What are your goals for the patient experience? Try to speak from the heart with a few sentences on what you enjoy about what you do and how that passion impacts your patients. Be specific—every dentist says that they’re gentle, that they listen to their patients, that they provide exceptional care. How do you do that?

If you decide to write your own biography from scratch, spend some time thinking about the tone you’d like to take. Most doctors play it safe and strike a balance between friendly and professional, but if you have a highly specialized practice, you may want to skew towards formal; if you’re known for your sense of humor, your bio is the best place on your website to inject some levity.

Your Instagram bio should be a place where you tell your readers exactly who you are.

This should be brief, clear, and to the point. Explain what makes you unique and what you can do for your audience.

In the Later example, they do this in two different ways:

In their profile name, they showcase their company name with a clear description of what they do
They provide even more explanation and boost their brand up, saying they are the #1 marketing platform for Instagram

Step 2: Pitch Your Service [And Use Relevant Keywords]

While it's important to explain what type of company you are, it's also critical to pitch your product or service.

When creating a website, this is often the first thing people see on your site to really understand what you are offering and what makes you stand out from the rest.

Naomi – Practice Administrator

Naomi is our Practice Administrator and has been working in the dental field since 2002. She strives to make dentistry understandable and affordable for every patient. Naomi has completed numerous hours of continuing education in order to equip herself to best serve our patients including training at the prestigious Schuster Center for Professional Development in Scottsdale, AZ. She also has extensive dental knowledge and her experience in the financial and management areas of our practice makes her an excellent asset to our team.

Kristen – Communications Coordinator

Kristen graduated from The Sage College of Albany with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and minor in Communications. She previously worked in a multi-specialty dental practice in Boston where she developed a passion for all aspects of the dental field and patient care. Kristen relocated back to the Capital Region to be closer to her family and to continue working in the dental environment. She enjoys working closely with patients to ensure they receive the best treatment and a consistently positive experience at each visit.

Kim – Hygienist

Kim is a 1982 graduate of the Dental Hygiene Program at Hudson Valley Community College, and an active member of the American Dental Hygiene Association. She has been an instrumental part of this practice for over 34 years, and has developed a trusting relationship with our patients while achieving the highest level of oral health. Kim has completed training at the Schuster Center for Professional Development in Scottsdale, AZ as well as obtaining licensure for expanded duties. She attends many continuing education classes and is always striving to gain more knowledge for the benefit of her patients.

Madalyn – Hygienist

Madalyn is a Registered Dental Hygienist who graduated with honors from SUNY Canton with a degree in Dental Hygiene of Applied Sciences. She is patient-focused, driven to provide a personable experience along with the highest quality of care possible. Madalyn enjoys building relationships with her patients and educating them on the importance of their overall oral health. She has extensive experience and advanced training in local anesthesia, nitrous oxide and laser therapy. Although Madalyn has spent the majority of her career helping adults achieve optimal dental wellness, she is finding that her real passion is in providing care to children. Madalyn is excited to have a career that she loves and is grateful to be working with such an amazing team at Gialanella Family Dentistry.

Jenn – Hygienist

Jenn graduated from the Dental Hygiene Program at Hudson Valley Community College in 2007. She attends numerous continuing education courses to keep up with the latest methods, materials and emerging technologies. She has been certified in the use of nitrous oxide and local anesthesia. Jenn also has an interest in studying the links between gum disease and overall systemic health. She has been a welcomed asset to our practice since 2016.

Kate – Hygienist

Kate is a registered dental hygienist who graduated from Hudson Valley Community College with a degree in Dental Hygiene of Applied Sciences. She is certified in the use of nitrous oxide and local anesthesia. Lorraine – Dental Assistant

Lorraine graduated Green Mountain College in 1979 with an Associate Degree in Dental Assisting. She is nationally certified, New York State licensed, and has taken hundreds of hours of continuing education over the years. She is energetic and enthusiastic about dentistry and always willing to go the extra mile for her patients.

Nicole – Dental Assistant

Nicole has been working as an assistant in the dental field since 2001. She completed her Certified Dental Assistant Degree at Hudson Valley Community College which has enabled her to broaden her scope of patient care. She is also cross-trained on the administrative side of our practice. Maria – Dental Assistant

Maria has been working as a dental assistant since 1995. She is exceptionally qualified as she was a dentist in Colombia prior to moving to the United States. She has experience in assisting in specialty offices for root canals. She also has a keen eye for the esthetic side of dentistry. Maria is bilingual and enjoys working in an atmosphere that is always striving to be on the cutting edge of dental technology while delivering the highest level of treatment.

Stephanie – Dental Assistant

Stephanie has over 30 years experience in the dental field. She received her certificate in Dental Assisting from Monroe Community College. Dr. Jane S. Wrinch

Dr. Wrinch graduated in 1992, obtaining her DMD degree from the faculty of dentistry at the University of British Columbia. After working a short time in northern British Columbia, she was selected to complete a multi-disciplinary hospital residency at the Montreal General Hospital through McGill University. This residency provided her with advanced training in all the specialties of dentistry including oral surgery, anesthesia, and treatment of medically compromised patients. Dr. Wrinch then moved to Ottawa, working first as an associate dentist while holding staff positions at the Ottawa Civic and Queensway Carleton Hospitals. While there, she chaired the startup of a hospital based geriatric specialty clinic and owned her own practice.

Dr. Wrinch is a member of the Victoria and District Dental Society, the BC Dental Association, the College of Dental Surgeons of BC, the Saanich RV Tucker Gold Study Club, the Kois Institute and the Canadian Dental Association. She is a previous member of the American Association of Gold Ferriers and the Canadian Association of Restorative Dentists and Prosthodontists. Dr. Wrinch has also held membership in the Advanced Orthodontics Study Club at UBC (six years). She was on staff at the Victoria General and Royal Jubilee Hospitals, and has been a fourth year dental student mentor for the Faculty of Dentistry at UBC. In January 2000, Dr. Wrinch opened her private practice in the Royal Oak Shopping Centre. She enjoys the challenge of providing quality conservative family dentistry in a comfortable and friendly environment. Currently, Dr. Wrinch is currently completing a one year post-graduate certification program in orofacial pain, through the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry, University of Southern California.

Dr. Wrinch is an avid gardener. She and her husband James have raised six children, now all grown. Dr. Wrinch and her husband enjoy travelling, hiking, small scale farming, and numerous other outdoor activities. In the last few years, Dr. Wrinch has taken up pottery and tries to work in her small home studio as often as she can.

Dr. Anna Rankin

We warmly welcome Dr. Anna Rankin to Dogwood Family Dentistry Centre. Dr. Rankin graduated from the University of British Columbia Faculty of Dentistry with a Doctor of Medical Dentistry degree in 2010. Prior to dental school in 2004, she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Cell Biology and Genetics with a minor in Psychology from the University of British Columbia. Dr. Rankin was awarded with the following upon her graduation from dental school: the Hanau Excellence in Prosthodontics, the Pierre Fauchard Academy Award for Clinical, Academic Performance and Leadership, the Scotiabank Award for Clinical Performance and the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain Outstanding Senior Student Award.

Raised in the lower mainland of British Columbia, Dr. Rankin, and her husband Carl, relocated to Victoria in order to enjoy the slower pace on Vancouver Island. Since graduation, Dr. Rankin has worked as an associate and has owned her own private practice. She practices all aspects of general dentistry and enjoys caring for patients of all ages. Dr. Rankin receives much gratification by interacting with her patients in a compassionate manner.

Dr. Rankin participates regularly in continuing education courses, in all areas of dentistry to maintain progressive skills in general dentistry. She is a member of the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia, the Canadian Dental Association, the American Dental Association, the Victoria and District Dental Society, the Saanich RV Tucker Gold Study Club and the Academy of General Dentistry BC Chapter. Dr. Rankin is also a graduate of the highly esteemed Kois Institute, and has taken courses at the Spear Education Institute. In the past, she has also been a member of the UBC Advanced Orthodontic Study Club (2010-2013) and the Victoria Composite Study Club (2011-2013).

Currently, Dr. Rankin and her husband are busy parents of three young children: her son Brandon, and identical twin girls, Ava and Isla.

Hillary (Certified Dental Assistant)

Born and raised in Victoria, Hillary is a 2018 graduate from the Camosun College Dental Assistant Program. She loves working with children and assisting with oral surgery, and reports that she has had an interest in the dental field since she was very young. In her free time, Hillary loves going to beaches and getting outdoors to explore Vancouver Island. She loves being active and has a passion for yoga, which she attends regularly. Hillary’s other passion is her two cats, Dragon and Bucket. We are appreciative of Hillary’s calm and compassionate nature. She has been a valuable addition to our dental team. Hillary is currently on maternity leave with her young son Bodhi, who was born in December 2020. She and her parnter Brandon are really their time together as new parents.

Avy (Chairside Dental Assistant)

Born in the Philippines, Avy moved with her family to Victoria when she was only 13 years old. Wanting to work in the dental field, Avy left her position as a community home care support worker to start fresh. Now, she is a valuable member of our Dogwood team, working as a chairside dental assistant, while working online through Vancouver Community College to complete her certified dental assistant training. We are grateful for Avy’s gentle and kind manner. Her smiles and calm demeanor have endeared her to us all. Avy and her husband Bek enjoy exploring Vancouver Island together.

Camille (Dental Assistant)

Born in the Philippines, our small but mighty Camille moved to Canada with her family in 2009. After attending school for cooking and flight attendant training, she has found her way into the dental world — and the Dogwood team has benefited greatly from her decision to shift careers. She is currently working online through Vancouver Community College to obtain her certification in dental assisting. Camille’s fast energy, desire to learn and high level infection control skills are a bonus to our patients. Her hobbies include travelling and spending time with husband JC her three small children.

Janet (Registered Dental Hygienist)

Janet is a 1991 graduate of the Vancouver Community College dental hygiene program in Vancouver. With over 20 years of hygiene experience and some prior years of dental assisting, we are lucky to have such a gentle and qualified dental team member. Her attention to detail and enthusiasm to maintain high and current standards in the profession of periodontics are truly appreciated by her patients and dental team. Janet's practice in our office allows her to be able to spend valuable time with her children, at school and with their many activities. Janet and her husband Gavin have two grown daughters, Celine and Katie.

Marianne (Registered Dental Hygienist)

Marianne graduated from Cegep de l'Outaouais in Gatineau, Quebec in 2014, obtaining her dental hygiene diploma. Hailing from Saint-Lin-Laurentides in the Laurentians, north of Montreal, she started her dental hygienist career in Gatineau, working for a number of family dental practices, before moving to Victoria with her partner. Marianne's calm, gentle and easy-going manner has been welcomed by patients and our dental team. Both fans of snowboarding, hiking and trekking, camping and other outside activities, Marianne and her partner Neil have now left behind the outdoor fun after having had their son Adam. Marianne will be going on her second maternity leave in July 2021.

Emily (Registered Dental Hygienist)

Emily graduated from the Camosun College Dental Hygiene program in 2020, and has been working with our team since that time. Upon graduation, Emily was recipient of the Community Dental Health award, provided by Elsevier Science Canada. Her gentle touch, and thorough record keeping has been most welcomed by our patients. Born and raised in Vietnam, Emily and her family moved to Victoria in 2013. Outside of the dental office, Emily loves to travel, hike, visit beaches, and cook. She enjoys meeting new people and attending the many social events and festivals typically offered in Victoria (like the rest of the world, she is looking very forward to the end of the covid pandemic). We are pleased to have Emily as a member of our strong and capable hygiene team.

Sabrina (Receptionist)

Sabrina, our friendly receptionist, is a native of Victoria, having graduated from CDI College in 2004 from the certified dental assisting program. Since that time, she has acquired much experience including working in paediatric dentistry, and at the University of Alberta Dental Clinic with residents and staff dentists. Sabrina’s lively personality, competence and ability to connect well with patients has been a huge asset to our dental practice. We are delighted to have her as an integral part of our team, keeping us organized and with high morale at all times. Sabrina and her husband Randy, have one very cute little son, Leland, who has become another member of our Dogwood family of children.

Shelley (Receptionist)

Shelley joined the team in September 2020, and has come to our office with over 23 years of dental office reception experience. Her attention to detail and calm demeanor have been welcomed skills to our front end dream team. Shelley was born on Vancouver Island and has lived her entire life on the south coast of British Columbia. She loves to garden, read and do home renovation projects. Now that their son is a young adult, Shelley and her husband have time to explore the local beaches and parks (where she will often leave her husband enjoying the views while she wanders off with her camera). They also both love travelling. Shelley has also spent time studying Spanish. We are grateful to have Shelley on the Dogwood team.

Dentist Discovers Human-Like Jawbone and Teeth in a Floor Tile at His Parents’ Home

Scientists are planning to study the specimen, embedded in travertine from western Turkey, in hopes of dating and identifying it

While visiting his parents’ recently renovated house in Europe, a man spotted something unusual in one of the floor tiles. Upon closer inspection, it appeared to be part of a human jawbone—and it still had a few teeth.

The man could recognize the bone because he’s a dentist, according to a post he made on Reddit last week.

Embedded in a hallway leading to the home’s terrace, the mandible appeared to have been cut at an angle. It reminded the dentist of the CT scans he reviews at work.

“As I am specialized in implant dentistry, I work with this kind of image every day, and it looked very familiar,” he wrote in an email to the Washington Post ’ s Carolyn Y. Johnson.

The man, whose Reddit username is Kidipadeli75, declined to reveal his full name to protect his family’s privacy.

He found the jawbone in a tile made of travertine, a type of limestone that typically forms near hot springs. This specific tile came from a quarry in the Denizli Basin of western Turkey. The travertine excavated there formed between 0.7 million and 1.8 million years ago, which suggests the mandible did not come from a person who died recently.

Travertine forms when a change in chemical conditions cause dissolved calcium carbonate to harden into solid rock. It usually solidifies in layers, giving travertine tiles their distinctive and visually appealing look. These layers can trap anything that falls into them, such as leaves, feathers and even dead animals.

As such, the recent jawbone discovery is “somewhere between uncommon and common,” says Andrew Leier , a geologist at the University of South Carolina and chair of the Geological Society of America’s sedimentary geology division , to Architectural Digest ’s Katherine McLaughlin.

“But it’s not a crazy thing to happen,” he adds.

Anywhere you find travertine tile, you might also find fossils. The travertine-clad Getty Center in Los Angeles, for instance, is a treasure trove of fossils , including feathers, algae, bacteria, an animal foot and leaves.

Since the anonymous dentist posted about the discovery, he’s been contacted by an international team of researchers, and they’re working with him on a plan to remove the tile for study, reports the Atlantic ’s Sarah Zhang. They have also initiated discussions with the company that sold the tile, in hopes of searching for additional remains in other pieces of travertine from the same quarry.

By simply looking at the photo, scientists can’t tell how old the jawbone may be or which species—modern human or early human relative—it may have once belonged to. To sleuth out that information, they hope to run the specimen through a CT scanner and construct a 3D model of it. Chemical analysis of the rock could reveal its age, and samples of the tooth enamel might hold clues to what the jawbone’s owner ate. Teams might even attempt to recover ancient DNA.

However, the photo has revealed at least one interesting tidbit already: The person may have had some dental work done.

“There appear to be absent teeth and the bone tissue has filled into where the teeth once were,” write forensic dental consultants Amber D. Riley and Anthony R. Cardoza in a joint email to Architectural Digest . “Another human potentially intervened and removed teeth due to injury or disease.”

Paleoanthropologists have discovered all kinds of fossils in Denizli Basin travertine, including deer, mammoths and reptiles. They’ve also discovered at least one other set of human remains: fragments of a human skull cap that showed signs of tuberculosis. The skull, which is at least 1.1 million years old , represented the first Homo erectus ever found in Turkey, now nicknamed the “Kocabas hominin.”

So, why didn’t anyone notice the jawbone in the travertine at any point before or during installation? John Hawks , a paleoanthropologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, took up this question in a blog post titled “How many bathrooms have Neanderthals in the tile?”

Quarry workers make rough cuts of travertine to create large panels, he writes. While doing so, they check for big defects and any gaps before they begin polishing the stone. Then, they typically stack the tiles for shipping and move on quickly.

“Small defects and inclusions are the reason why people want travertine in the first place, so they don’t merit special attention,” Hawks writes. “Consumers who buy travertine usually browse samples in a showroom to choose the type of rock, and they don’t see the actual panels or tile until installation.”

So, the next time you renovate your home with travertine, take the time to thoroughly inspect the tiles. Or, to boost your chances of stumbling upon a fossil, you might only need to travel as far as your local home improvement store.

“Every time I am in Home Depot, I go through the travertine tile looking for fossils,” says John W. Kappelman Jr ., a paleoanthropologist at the University of Texas at Austin, to the Washington Post .

Primary in Pennsylvania is here: A 2024 election guide from ballot issues to House races

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have essentially clinched their party’s 2024 nominations for the White House. But Pennsylvania voters on Tuesday will cast their ballots in a slew of contentious and potentially decisive congressional and state races that are still sure to make waves as the campaign chugs toward November.

The primary results in this pivotal swing state are certain to reveal insights about the major issues shaping the general election, namely on abortion and the Israel-Hamas war.

All 17 members of Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation are running for re-election in 2024 and three of those incumbents are facing serious primary challengers. Several others are also watching to see who their opponent will be in the fall. And, in some cases, the outcome of Tuesday’s races could determine which way those seats swing on Election Day.

While it's a far-flung possibility, which party has a majority in Pennsylvania's congressional delegation also could have major implications on the presidential race. If the 2024 White House election is contested or tied, each state’s congressional delegation will have a single vote in deciding the winner. Currently, Democrats have a 9-8 advantage — meaning one general election race in November could make all the difference.

At the state level, Democrats are hoping to hold on to their majority in the state House and take control of the state Senate. Republicans currently hold a 28-22 majority in the Senate, and Democrats are hoping to flip at least three seats to make it 25-25, giving them the majority via a tie-breaking vote from Democratic Lieutenant Gov. Austin Davis.

Five Democrats and two Republicans are also battling for the open state attorney general position, once held by Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro . Michelle Henry, who is completing the remainder of Shapiro’s term since he was elected governor in 2022, is not running for the position.

Candidates across these races are running on some of the biggest issues facing the country — from abortion to the war in Gaza to election integrity. And the candidates whom Democratic and Republican voters pick on Tuesday could give larger insights about their views on topics that appear central to this fall's general election.

Here's a look at what to expect in Tuesday's primary.

Abortion at play in Pennsylvania races

Abortion has roiled down-ballot races across the country, and Pennsylvania is no exception. Reproductive rights have been a major topic in the attorney general’s race and in the Republican primary for the 1 st Congressional District.

All five Democratic candidates for attorney general have committed to protecting the right to abortion and access to FDA-approved medications such as mifepristone . Meanwhile, the Republican candidates have said that they do not believe the state constitution guarantees the right to an abortion. As attorney general, both would leave the issue for the state legislature to decide.

In Pennsylvania’s 1 st Congressional District, longtime Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick is being challenged on his right flank by a candidate who believes abortions should be banned in nearly all circumstances — including in cases of rape and incest.

Mark Houck, Fitzpatrick’s opponent, was acquitted of criminal charges stemming from an altercation at an abortion clinic. The incident reportedly inspired him to run for public office. A devout Catholic, Houck co-founded the men's religious group The King's Men. He's worked as an author, motivational speaker and human resources manager.

Fitzpatrick is a moderate Republican. He is one of a handful of Republican representatives serving in districts that Biden won in 2020.

The primary race could demonstrate just how important the issue of abortion is for the Republican Party’s base.

Pennsylvania Democrats clash on Israel-Hamas war

In Pennsylvania’s 12 th District, which includes Pittsburgh and some of its suburbs, first-term progressive Rep. Summer Lee, is facing a primary challenge over her opposition to the Israel-Hamas war. Bhavini Patel, a more moderate Democratic congressional candidate has tried to closely align herself with President Joe Biden.

Lee, who is affiliated with the “squad,” was among the early advocates in Congress calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. She has been an outspoken opponent of providing U.S. military aid to Israel.

Patel is a 29-year-old municipal council member who also describes herself as a progressive. She has framed the incumbent's criticism of Israel as detrimental to Biden’s re-election efforts and unrepresentative of a district that is home to a large Jewish community.

The election on Tuesday could reveal just how salient the issue of the war is for Democratic voters — particularly in swing areas of the country. It may also forecast how other progressives facing similar challenges from moderate Democrats could fair in their races.

What are the key Pennsylvania House races to watch?

There are several other high-profile House primary races to watch in Pennsylvania.

Six Democrats are competing for the chance to challenge GOP Rep. Scott Perry in Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional District, which includes Harrisburg and Hershey.

Perry was a former chair of the Freedom Caucus, one of the most conservative factions of the Republican Party, with members including Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz and Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Perry was also a key figure in efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

While the area leans Republican, Democrats say they can win over independents and moderate conservatives in the area with a message centered around protecting democracy. They plan to tie Perry to Trump and conservative extremism.

Out of the six Democratic candidates running to unseat Perry, news anchor Janelle Stelson and former "Top Gun" fighter pilot Mike O’Brien appear to have the best shot. The other candidates include Harrisburg City Council member Shamaine Daniels, progressive businessman John Broadhurst and former radio executive Black Lynch.

To the northeast of Harrisburg, in the Lehigh Valley, three Republicans are competing to take on Democratic Rep. Susan Wild. Her seat, in Pennsylvania’s 7th District, is a top target for Republicans in November.

Wild barely eked out a victory against her Republican opponent, Lisa Scheller, in 2022. She won 51-49.

Pennsylvania’s state legislature hangs in the balance

If Pennsylvania Democrats hold their narrow majority in the state House and win the state Senate in November, it would give Gov. Shapiro enormous power to pass his agenda in the last two years of his term.

It would also mark the first time in three decades that the party controlled the state Senate; Tuesday’s elections could determine whether that’s possible.

Because the local districts tend to lean Democratic or Republican, the results of the primary elections can have a large sway on the race.

Democrats currently hold a two-seat majority in the state House, and Republicans hold a five-seat majority in the state Senate.
