Welcome to our homework grids. Children in all year groups from Reception to Y6 will receive a half termly grids with a range of exciting topic activities to complete alongside key skills tasks. Please see the letter and 'How To' guide, below for a full explanation of how these work.
Copies of the grids can be found here too.
Great examples of homework tasks will be celebrated in assemblies and displayed in school. You can also see examples on the Homework Heroes tab accessed via Homework Grids to the left of this page.
For those children and families who produce homework digitally, we have a dedicated email address to which you can send photos, videos powerpoints etc. Work will be forwarded to the relevant teachers.
How to use the homework grids:
-Each grid lasts for a half term
-New grids will be issued each half term
-Children will need to complete one piece of topic / project homework per week (left hand side of the grid)
-Children will need to practise the key spellings & key maths facts (right hand side of the grid)
-Children can choose up to 2 topic / project based tasks from any one area such as maths & problem solving or RE, per half term (to avoid children only ever completing topic activities from the RE section, for example, up to 2 tasks can be selected from any one area)
-Children will need to decide how they would like to practise their key spellings and key maths facts. (each grid will give suggestions of how to do this. Websites, apps and ideas will be given. However parents need to support their children in finding the best ways to secure these facts. We hope this is something you can do together.)
-Children will need to submit their homework on Wednesdays (this will consist of one topic task and evidence of key spelling & maths facts practice).
All homework will be acknowledged by the class teacher and or teaching assistant. This may be verbally, a written comment, remark or sticker. Please don't feel work has not been appreciated or noticed if comments are not written; we always look at everything that is sent in. Extra special pieces of homework may earn a homework hero certificate too!
Copies of the grids can be found below.

Reception Homework Grids
Year 1 homework grids.
Year 2 children are given a piece of Maths and English homework each week and more creative pieces at certain times throughout the year (see links below). These are linked to whatever they have done in class that week or any areas of development that have been identified. In addition, the children will take home spelling words that they will need to learn for a test the following week. We also ask that children read their home reading books at least three times a week to an adult.

Homework grids.
At LGJS we want our pupils to develop into well-rounded individuals. It is important that they get time to take part in co-curricular interests, both in and out of school, and they need time to relax and to spend time with family. Homework gives the opportunity for pupils to consolidate what they have been learning in school, and lets them find out more about the topics they most enjoy.
Kinders and Reception
There are activities that we encourage parents and children to work together on at home. These practical activities are designed to support the learning that is happening in school. They include individualised reading and phonic activities at various levels; maths games and are not expected to take longer than 10-15 minutes each evening.
Homework is split into three strands:
Essentials – reading, spellings and maths facts, along with some more formal homework where appropriate.
Online support – as a school we subscribe to a number of online portals where pupils are encouraged to practice Maths and English.
The Pick and Mix grids – these grids allow pupils to choose a few activities which particularly interest them and spend the term working on them before bringing them in to share with the class.
This term’s grids are available below.

Reception Homework
For many parents, homework is the only picture they get of what their child does at school. For this reason, Hamilton have put a great deal of effort into writing suitable, fun and home-friendly activities for children and parents to share together. Children will benefit and so will parents and teachers!
The activities rehearse core literacy skills that you may wish children to practise or keep on the boil. Read our English homework blog for more advice about using them.

Grid References
Grid references help us locate places on a map.
Look at the Ordnance Survey map below. Notice the blue squares that overlay the map.
Eastings are the lines that run from the top of the map to the bottom. They show you how far east you must go.
Northing are the lines that run from the left to the right of the map. They show you how far north you must go.
When giving a grid reference the eastings are given first, followed by the northings. The four figure grid reference for the square below is 9061.
Six figure grid references allow you to identify an exact location within a grid square. Let’s zoom into 9061 to find out how these work.
In order to identify a six figure grid reference we need to imagine another grid on top of the existing square.
These are then numbered as below.
The six figure grid reference for the coniferous forest shown below is 908619. Again, the eastings come before the northings.
