RakshaBandhan review: Akshay Kumar film moves you to tears with strong message on dowry, entertains with clean humour
Rakshabandhan review: akshay kumar's films delivers a strong message on dowry without trivialising the issue while managing to be an entertaining watch..
It's not for nothing that people say Akshay Kumar knows and understands the pulse of his audience and accordingly makes films. With his latest release, Raksha Bandhan, Akshay only proves that if a film has its heart in the right place, it will connect with the audiences. This is not the first time the actor has done a film that's relevant and has a strong social message — Raksha Bandhan touches upon the issue of dowry system in India. But it's the way director Aanand L Rai chooses to narrate the story, weaving together the most delicate threads to deliver a strong message, that does the trick. Also read: Akshay Kumar calls dowry ‘extortion’ ahead of Raksha Bandhan release
Set in the lanes of Chandni Chownk in Old Delhi, the film introduces us to Lala Kedarnath (Akshay), who owns a pushtaini golgappa shop which has been there for three generations now. Pregnant women queue up outside the shop and believe that eating panipuri from Lala's shop will help them deliver a baby boy. Meanwhile, Lala had promised his mother on her deathbed that he'll settle down with a girl only after he has married off his four sisters to suitable boys. And that's the big task at hand for the sisters, as described by matchmaker Shanu (Seema Pahwa), are a mixed variety. While the eldest of the four, Gayatri (Sadia Khateeb) is the ideal and sensible one, Durga (Deepika Khanna) is chubby and on the heavier side, Laxmi (Smrithi Srikanth) has dusky skin that doesn't fit the society's beauty standards, and the youngest, Saraswati (Sahejmeen Kaur) is tomboyish, who has grown up watching films like Ghatak, Ghayal and Ziddi, all starring Sunny Deol. Amid all this chaos, Lala's childhood sweetheart Sapna ( Bhumi Pednekar ) is desperately waiting to get married to him but only after his sisters are taken care of. How Akshay fulfills his promise and what hardships he faces on the way is the gist of what we see in Raksha Bandhan.
What I loved the most about the film is the beautiful balance it brings in terms of emotions. It's loaded with humour in the first half and there are some genuinely funny and heart-warming scenes including constant nudging from the sisters, teasing their only brother, Sapna's desperate attempts to lure Lala and so on. Cut to post interval, and the emotional arc of characters, as well as the storyline leaves you immersed, and gets you teary-eyed more often you'd expect.
Himanshu Sharma and Kanika Dhillon's story never attempts to overshadow an important subject like dowry in the garb of comedy. There are lighter moments which kind of address the trouble but there are also some extremely hard-hitting dialogue and scenes that are powerful and succeed in sending out a strong message. Groom's family demanding dowry or bride's family giving it concealed as gifts is a problematic arrangement that nobody really talks about. While many think it's a thing that's more prevalent in the rural sectors and the cities have advanced on this front, it's just not the case. In fact, richer the family, there's more exchange (willingly or forcibly) of these gifts. Raksha Bandhan calls out this practice in a very effective and emotional manner. For once, it's good that Bollywood hasn't trivialised an issue to make a point.
Consistency in the narrative is one of the biggest strengths of the film. The storyline rarely loses focus and is well-paced. We're told only that much backstory of these siblings that required to make a connection. Director Aanand L Rai doesn't go overboard taking us back and forth with flashbacks. At 110 minutes, the film is very cleverly edited and doesn't leave any room to look repetitive or boring.
However, the stereotypes attached to some of the characters might not go down well with everyone. The way some scenes normalise body shaming calling Durga 'double decker', skin shame Laxmi calling her 'amavas ki raat' who needs to be 'marinated in uptan', aren't really necressary. In one of the scenes, Shanu whose marriage bureau is called Saubhayashali: Beti aapki, chinta hamari, calls Saraswati 'Chota Shakeel' and says 'isko Sunny Deol se Sunny Leone banana hai'. (Ouch, that's a bit below the belt). Though, the sass with which these sisters reply, 'Big is beautiful' or 'Black is back' shows how girls are ready to hit back at the society that constantly judges.
Akshay is terrific as a doting brother. He is hilarious in the comic scenes and unbelievably vulnerable in the emotional ones. This is perhaps after a long, long time I've seen Akshay cry so much on screen for a film. His charisma, conviction, pain, passion and energy reflect throughout. Bhumi as the helpless lover is convincing and has a pleasant screen presence, though her chemistry this time around with Akshay wasn't quite as good as their previous outings.
The way Raksha Bandhan approaches the brother sister bond is quite unusual. We never really see these sisters open up to the only brother they have yet they have so much they expect from him. Knowing his sisters are the only reason he can't marry anytime soon, Akshay never shows any sense of annoyance or feeling burdened. While all the four girls get ample screen time (maybe not as many lines) to shine and perform — it's the camaraderie between Sadia and Akshay that stands out. Their scenes together are endearing, especially the one when she's getting married and the song that plays.
Raksha Bandhan is a family entertainer that takes the form of social commentary at some places, but not at the cost of losing its main essence of celebrating the sibling bond and its beauty. Watch it with your folks and definitely your partner in crime, your siblings.

‘Raksha Bandhan’ Film Review: Akshay Kumar’s Loud Film Tries Hard To Be A Social Drama
Specialty: fashion, entertainment
Qualification: B.Des, Knitwear Design from National Institute Of Fashion Technology
Experience: 8 Years
Akshay Kumar is back with another social drama-meets-comedy-meets-just about everything else. Raksha Bandhan is slated for a theatrical release on August 11, just in time for, you guessed it, the festival itself.
Kumar is accompanied by Bhumi Pednekar and a slew of other actors in this Aanand L. Rai directorial but, the question is, does it work? Just ahead of its release, here’s an honest film review of Raksha Bandhan and whether it ought to be part of your weekend plans. Spoilers ahead.
Table of Contents
Review of ‘Raksha Bandhan’ starring Akshay Kumar & Bhumi Pednekar
Credit: Cape of Good Films, Colour Yellow Productions, Zee Studios
The premise of the film is centred around dowry and a loud, hyper Kedarnath (Akshay Kumar), brother to four young sisters, who is trying his best to marry them off. That all of them are not yet of eligible age is not something viewers are supposed to seek answers to, I suppose.
A resident of Chandni Chowk, Kedarnath runs a chaat shop and has loyal customers in pregnant women wishing for sons. Yes, in 2022, and yes, with due encouragement from the shop’s owner.
Image credit: Cape of Good Films, Colour Yellow Productions, Zee Studios
That cringe detail aside, our male protagonist has several problems of his own. One: His sisters, all except one, are unruly and he feels marrying them off—the zenith of a girl’s existence—will be tough. Two: His longtime love, Sapna (Bhumi Pednekar) is pretty much dying to marry him but they can’t, since he promised his dying mother that he would let his sisters “settle down” first.
A loud first half, an unbearable second act
Now, here’s where logic would ideally kick in. Okay, he did promise his mother but does he ever stop and question the dated ideology, and focus on their education, their careers and their actual desires for marriage? Not in the film I watched.
Kumar’s loud protagonist—one you can pick from just about any ‘comedy’ film of his and place in this one—looks only in one direction, often irritably and with arms flailing. Bhumi Pednekar is reduced to a romantic interest pining to get married to the supposed love of her life. There is absolutely no depth to her character other than this.
If the first half is a shoddy attempt at comedy— hello fat shaming , colourism and all hail dowry because he wants his sisters to be happy—the second is a dramedy stretched beyond bearable limits, one where he resorts to selling a kidney to gather money for his sisters’ marriages, a plot point rarely mentioned again or resolved.
‘Raksha Bandhan’ tries too hard, but loses the plot
Stuck by an unforeseen tragedy, our protagonist finally realises the social evil that is dowry , and how he should instead be educating his sisters so that they make a name for themselves. The journey from point A to B is sudden, without nuance, and catering to a trope so old, you’d be surprised you are not in a 90s Bollywood film.
There’s no denying the fact that dowry continues to be practised in several places in India, many a times under the garb of ‘gifts’. The problem with Raksha Bandhan is that in order to educate the masses about the evil that is dowry, the film first glorifies it to a great extent. So much so that justifying the trajectory of it from ‘good’ to ‘bad’ in about two hours becomes impossible.
Too much of everything adds up to a forgettable drama
View this post on Instagram
There is also a preachy speech denouncing the dowry system at the end as a broken Kedarnath tries to gather the pieces of his life but, by then, the plot is all over the place and the gaps too many for anyone to relate to.
In the end, you are left wondering what would have happened if Akshay Kumar’s Kedarnath did find the courage to shun the practice a bit earlier. But he didn’t and, so, here we are with the chaos that is Raksha Bandhan .

Principal photography of the film commenced on 21 June 2021. The film was wrapped up in Delhi on 12 October 2021.
The film was originally scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on 5 November 2021 on the occasion of Diwali , but the release has now been deferred due to COVID-19 pandemic which caused a delay in its pre-production and other important works. The film will theatrically release on 11 August 2022 . The trailer of the film was released on YouTube on 21 June 2022.
The songs were composed by Himesh Reshammiya while Ishaan Chhabra has composed the original background score. Irshad Kamil has written the lyrics.

Raksha Bandhan Film Review:
A brother working day and night to get his four sisters married is a plot that many of us in modern India would find a tad distasteful. Girls are reaching for the moon, are independent and strong, so what times is this film talking about? The current times… If you go by crime stats, even today 20 women die every single day due to dowry issues. This very difficult, and very sensitive, subject, is explored by director Aanand L. Rai in Raksha Bandhan.
Kedarnath (Akshay Kumar) is a ‘lala’ in Chandni Chowk, who is doing his baap-dada’s business of a ‘chaat’ place that people throng, especially those who desire a ‘son’. Ironically, he has four sisters. With both his parents gone, his greatest endeavour is to get them married. The stumbling block is the heavy dowry, which is a norm, he has to collect. Add to it, an old family loan that he’s paying off, and that his sisters, except one, are rather unfortunate-looking – one is fat, another dark and yet another tomboyish. Not that you can body-shame them, as their quips are ready – big is beautiful, black is back and none can stop the youngest one from taking ‘pangas’.
Add to it Kedarnath’s promise to his dying mother that he would tie the knot only after marrying his sisters off, stopping him and his childhood sweetheart Sapna (Bhumi Pednekar) from marrying.
The film opens on a funny note, the seven-month pregnant women thronging the chaat place get precedence and our lala refusing to give ‘son’ guarantee in Rs 25. As he sprints to meet the prospective groom for his sister, another dukan wala offers him milk – ‘kyon, naag panchami hai aaj?’ he asks. References to Nirav Modi to dodge the loan to him taking a resolve to put his sister on a leaf-a day-diet, marinating another in ‘ubtan’, to turning Sunny ‘Deol’ to Sunny ‘Leone’ – he is all set! He will do anything to see his sisters married, so as not to lose his sweetheart.
But the story takes an overtly sensitive turn, comedy leads to tragedy, the guffaws in the hall turn to sobs. Dowry turns over from a norm to a menace within moments, as the film takes a sombre turn.
Raksha Bandhan is over the top. A cringe-bhajan, loud acts, politically incorrect statements, yet it raises a valid issue, and effectively so. The plot goes all over, and is full on clichés. Akshay Kumar as Lala Kedarnath has a huge weight riding on his shoulders, and despite the histrionics-filled act, he manages to make the audience feel for him. Bhumi Pednekar takes turns from a supportive fiancée to girl at the end of her patience with all the waiting. She looks lovely in sarees. The four sisters – Gayatri, Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati, played by Sadia Khateeb, Deepika Khanna, Smrithi Srikanth and Sahejmeen Kaur, respectively – aid the story in the limited scenes that they get. Sadia Khateeb gets more screen space and justifies the ideal daughter-sister character she gets to play. Seema Pahwa’s character as a matchmaker in Shalu doesn’t give her much of a chance, but she manages to add to the drama. Neeraj Sood as Sapna’s father in the ‘shadi’ scene reminds one of the desperate father such as the one in Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin.
At little less than two hours, except for a song or two, the film moves at a fine place. In fact, the songs, Tere Saath Hoon Main and Bidaai, help the storyline; the music is by Himesh Reshammiya. With Tanu Weds Manu, Raanjhanaa and Tanu Weds Manu: Returns to his credit, expectations are high from director Aanand L. Rai, but Raksha Bandhan sure falls short, but even if this exaggerated social commentary saves another woman from being a victim of dowry death, it’s worth the effort!

Raksha Bandhan Reviews
Raksha Bandhan is the cinematic equivalent of a man constantly talking over a woman and then wanting an award for it.
Full Review | Original Score: 0.5/5 | Aug 20, 2022
Raksha Bandhan is primarily a vehicle for Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, and its social purpose plays second fiddle to fanning his stardom.
Full Review | Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 12, 2022
Raksha Bandhan is a regressive film that compresses the potentially most interesting plot point into a song montage (more on that later) and expands the melodrama.
Full Review | Aug 11, 2022
Akshay Kumar stars in a tone-deaf family drama that gets progressively regressive.
The film wants to cater to the lowest common denominator by regurgitating stale old lines and jokes, and still fails to elicit a laugh.
It is hard to believe that anybody would make a film such as this in 2022. The girls of Raksha Bandhan, like the film itself, are caught in a time warp.

Do the filmmakers truly believe that such low-rent family dramas, with their uneasy mix of humour and crassness, is the way out for a beleaguered Bollywood?
Full Review | Original Score: 1.5/5 | Aug 11, 2022
Akshay Kumar's film moves you to tears with a strong message on dowry and entertains with clean humour.
This highly emotional drama doesn’t fail to touch you, but it had the potential to be a far more entertaining watch.
Full Review | Original Score: 2.5/5 | Aug 11, 2022
Irony, which might have lifted a movie that’s often as one-note as Himesh Reshammmiya’s songs, is nowhere in sight.
Three fourths of Aanand L Rai's so-called social drama glorifies misogynistic objectives and regressive ideals for the sake of fun and jokes.

On the whole, Raksha Bandhan is for the small centres mainly. While it will appeal to the families, women and masses in small centres, it will not find as much favour with the youth, classes and audiences in the big cities. As far as business is concerned, it will, therefore, not be able to do much. Business in circuits like U.P., Bihar and C.P.C.I. Rajasthan will be better than in other circuits. It must be added that in the final tally, its business will be more than its merits because of the first eight-day week which is full of additional holidays

Let us get this out of the way without mincing words: Aanand L. Rai’s Raksha Bandhan has no business to exist in this day and age. It is a shockingly regressive family drama that would have us believe that girls are worth nothing if they are not married and domesticated.Raksha Bandhan is so, so yesterday in both substance and spirit that it could be passed off as a soggy 1950s film that has wended its way through the decades to land in our midst for no rhyme or reason.
Ratings: 2.5/5 Review By: Umesh Site: Koimoi
Himanshu Sharma & Kanika Dhillons regressive approach to the story isnt the only issue with the film, its also the extremely over-the-top treatment given to its narrative. It feels like an old soul trapped in a young body at places. All said and done, Raksha Bandhan celebrates all right things in the end, but its the journey to that celebration that doesnt really intrigue you to stay invested.
Ratings: 2.5/5 Review By: Renuka Site: Times Of India
Raksha Bandhan reflects the stories of people from small-town India, and in that effort, it does entertain especially in the first half. However, the story about bandhan between siblings soon turns into a social commentary about dowry, which takes up a lot of screentime of this 110-minute movie. This highly emotional drama doesnt fail to touch you, but it had the potential to be a far more entertaining watch.

Im not sure what made me more uncomfortable €” the mothballed plot detailing, the contrivances, the high-pitched melodrama which used to be part and parcel of movies we thought we had deep-sixed decades back; or the conviction that low-rent family dramas, with their uneasy mix of humour and crassness, hugely popular at one time, is the way out for a beleaguered Bollywood.
Ratings: 3.5/5 Review By: Hungama Site: Bollywood Hungama
On the whole, RAKSHA BANDHAN is a touching family saga, with a highly emotional second half that uplifts the film. At the box office, it has the potential of attracting family audiences to cinema halls, especially in the Hindi belt and mass centres. The five-day extended holiday period is an additional bonus. It deserves a tax exemption for its social message.

The script needed to be tighter. The first part definitely needed better editing, and parts of the latter half needed more attention, especially after the climax. Like mentioned before, this is one of the simplest films, so even Himanshu Sharma and Kanika Dhillon have written a fairly straightforward story. All in all, it is one of those films that you can watch with the entire family, as they come together for Raksha Bandhan. Moreover, it will make you laugh and cry in equal parts. And while it has its fair share of flaws, watch it for the simplicity, and for Akshay and Bhumis performance.

Raksha Bandhan movie review: A committed Akshay Kumar can’t save this mothballed, melodramatic film
Raksha bandhan movie review: do the filmmakers truly believe that such low-rent family dramas, with their uneasy mix of humour and crassness, is the way out for a beleaguered bollywood.
Within two minutes of Raksha Bandhan’s opening, you are confused: is this 2022, or 1962? A film featuring a man with four younger sisters, thinking of only one thing, How To Get Them ‘Married Off’, and the extent he has to go to that end, is the focus of ‘Raksha Bandhan’.
It’s not as if you do not have brothers who are completely devoted to their sisters’ welfare in this day and age. Sibling love has always been a strong element in Hindi cinema. But both the way the plot plays out, and even more importantly, how it is treated, pushes us back in time, and not in a salutory way.
Lala Kedarnath ( Akshay Kumar ) runs his ‘chaat-ki-dukaan’ in Chandni Chowk with a solo USP: all expectant women who eat his ‘gol-gappas’ will deliver sons. Boom. There goes your first gong; your jaw drops. This is just the beginning, of course. Within seconds, Lalaji waltzes into his house, ensconced in a narrow gali, labelling his unmarried sisters by their physical characteristics: one is overweight, the other is dark, the third is a hoyden; only the oldest, the ‘achcha bacchcha’ (good girl) is naturally the only one who is fair and demure. Nope, not kidding.
So, this is what we get. Lalaji negotiating the ‘burden’ of his ‘unbyaahi behens’ on the one hand, and on the other, trying to balance his filial duties with his own desires. A childhood sweetheart (Bhumi Pednekar), waiting in the wings, her loudmouth father (Neeraj Sood) hovering. When there are marriages to be arranged with cash and kind changing hands, there have to be marriage brokers (Seema Pahwa). And how can dowry deaths be far behind?
I’m not sure what made me more uncomfortable — the mothballed plot detailing, the contrivances, the high-pitched melodrama which used to be part and parcel of movies we thought we had deep-sixed decades back; or the conviction that low-rent family dramas, with their uneasy mix of humour and crassness, hugely popular at one time, is the way out for a beleaguered Bollywood.
Lalaji being much older than the women he is surrounded by, is given a reason when we are well into the film, leading to more sniffles. A funeral provides everyone a chance to have a good cry. Finally, once everyone on screen has been wrung out of the last tear, a few rays of positivity appear. Remember the standard method used to shove in a shard of progressiveness well after the film had bludgeoned us with its saccharine? Here too, once the three-fourth mark is safely over, after the loss of a young girl and, wait for it, a kidney, the film suddenly becomes a beacon for girls to stand on their own feet, and fight the evils of dowry.
Well, hurrah, but this better-late-than-never change of heart feels like a calculated after-thought, to keep the carping so-called progressives happy after the supposedly traditional types have had their fill.
What keeps us going, in as much as it does, is the absolute commitment that Akshay displays in his role of ‘bada bhaiyya’, not slipping out of his character even once. The ladies aren’t too bad either, whenever they get a chance to get in a word edgewise. When they are shown to be their own persons, owning their size and shade, the film shifts welcome gears. You wish there was more of this.
You end up asking, is this the only way that the ‘bhaiyya mere, rakhi ka bandhan toh nibhaana’ vibe can be top-lined for today’s audiences? Do, by all means, show us the horrors of dowry, and the other evils associated with this never-ending tradition of shaadi -vaadi, but how about also being aware of the responsibilty of an artist with such a large catchment? You start with a girl happy to go it on her own, insteading of hurriedly, almost aplogetically ending with it, and see how the world changes.
