Where would we be without science?

Our decision making, virtues, beliefs, and understanding of the world would all be unrecognisable.

The paradigm shift that got us to this point started a few hundred years ago with the Enlightenment.

People began to question what ‘was’, and looked for evidence to substantiate the status quo.

Immense thinkers began challenging the so-called ‘truth’ and looked to objectivity instead. Before long, belief wasn’t enough.

Things had to be falsifiable; to be tested and proved before they were accepted.

Fast forward a few hundred years and human progress at the hands of science has been astounding. It’s now hard to imagine life without it.

Yet there are undoubted advantages AND disadvantages of science to consider. Yes, life would be very different without it- but those differences wouldn’t all be regrettable.

The Advantages of Science and Technology

Let’s start with the advantages of science and technology. Here are 5 primary ways that I believe it makes the world better.

1. Science Leads to Knowledge and Discovery

Science expands our understanding of life.

There’s no way we’d know as much as we do about the world without it. Every single day, there are scientists in every discipline under the sun looking at

It looks at the mysteries of existence and asks ‘why?’, ‘what?’, and ‘how?’ Science looks for insight and objectivity. It takes what we think we know and seeks to prove it.

In essence, science is about getting us closer to truth. The scientific endeavour helps us find answers to the deepest problems, and takes us further down the road to discovery.

2. Science Facilitates Progress and Development

That expansion of knowledge is tantamount to progress.

That, for me, is what science is all about.

Think how far we’ve come as a species. 10,000 years ago we were roaming around as hunter gatherers! Now there’s almost 8 billion of us and we’re flying drones and making driverless vehicles.

The growth of the last century alone is staggering. It’s hard to imagine life without the internet now. But 100 years ago there weren’t even TVs!

And it’s all thanks to science.

It pushes our boundaries, tests our assertions, and leads to new discoveries that revolutionise life itself. We don’t know what the future will hold, but we can be sure that scientific progress will be a driving force behind it.

Another of the advantages of science and technology is its ability to challenge false ideas. Only then can you move forward.

3. Science Defies False Beliefs

Assumptions and stubbornness have wreaked untold devastation on the world.

They’ve caused death, famine, war, and countless atrocities.

For example, up until fairly recently, our entire medical model was built on (false) ideas formed by the Ancient Greeks! Ailments were caused by the balance of 4 elements/humors in our system.

Those ideas persisted for millennia. Who knows how many people perished as a result?

Only with the persistence, brilliance, and scientific approaches of a few incredible minds did we move into modern medical practices that save countless lives each year.

Science is about falsification. It looks at ideas and says “prove it”! If you can’t, then we won’t believe you. In this way, science channels us out of ignorance and down a path of realisation.

4. Science Solves Problems

The world is full of problems.

And science takes a proactive approach to solving them.

Once again, look at the progress we’ve made as a civilisation. Almost every development, small or monumental, that we’ve made is the result of scientific problem-solving.

Think about the life-changing inventions of the world- vaccinations, smartphones , the light bulb, aeroplanes…

None of them would have been possible without testing, experimentation, curiosity, and challenging assumptions. Science is a champion of progress. And you don’t see progress without problem-solving.

5. Science Informs Decision Making

If you’re lucky, you live in a society where major decision making is based on solid scientific evidence.

You identify a problem. You develop a theory. You cultivate a hypothesis. You put together a structured set of tests to see if that hypothesis is right or wrong. You develop falsifiable results that can be challenged by others.

In the process, you walk away with answers and direction. You now know if your ideas could work or not. Science removes the guesswork and restores order. Without it, we’d be shooting from the hip and in the dark in the pursuit of accurate decision-making.

There are many disadvantages of science as well. Here are 5 of the ones that occur to me…

1. Science Butts Heads with Spirituality

Matters of faith naturally come into conflict with scientific endeavour.

They exist in different worlds. Science is a world of objectivity; spirituality, one of subjectivity.

Let’s say I believe in a particular God. That belief brings me hope, contentment, and meaning. I’m a better person for that faith in the God in question.

A person of science comes along and says: ‘you know that God of yours- prove they exist’. And I say in return: ‘I can’t- I just believe’.

The person of science tells me I’m deceiving myself, that I’m deluded and foolish. My God does not exist without proof.

That’s difficult to hear. It’s demeaning, patronizing, insulting, and unfair.

Just as importantly, though, it stops that person of science from attaining the immense positivity that faith and religion can provide.

2. Science is Cold, Rational and Subversive

There’s something cold and clinical about science.

It’s the whitewashed, sterile environment of a laboratory versus the transcendent, warm, multi-coloured vibrancy of the Sistene Chapel.

It’s the refusal to accept that life might have more to it that what meets the eye.

As much as science has catapulted human progress, it can stymie your personal experience of the world. Everything needs to be proven to be believed; it removes mystery from the world, which can be a vital source of hope.

Another disadvantage of science is that it’s cold, clinical, and matter of fact. It makes it harder to see the mystery in life.

3. Science Poses Huge Moral Dilemmas

Scientific progress is mind-blowing.

We’re reaching levels of technological development, for instance, that create serious moral dilemmas. Think about manipulating DNA, changing physical features of unborn children, or creating robots /computers that might, one day, think for themselves.

Something about it feels out of control.

It’s as if we’re on the cusp of something; like a Pandora’s Box of bad news. It’s worrying to think that we might go too far and walk down a road to our own demise.

Anything in excess is bad for us. Maybe science is the same.

4. Science Threatens Our Wellbeing and the Natural World

Science seems to put discovery above all else.

That’s the dark side of the discipline. It seems like it’s a matter of ‘progress and discovery at all costs’, no matter the consequences.

We do inhuman and unspeakable things in the name of science, like experimenting on animals, destroying the natural world , and creating nuclear weapons.

Think about the psychology studies of the Mid-20th Century. By today’s standards they were unethical at best and heinous human rights violations at worst.

And yet we justify and explain such things away as necessary for scientific progress.

5. Science Makes the Future Feel Uncertain

There’s something about science that makes the future seem uncertain too.

I think it’s to do with the scale and speed of change. It feels hard to keep up with sometimes, right? It’s as if the snowballs gathering speed and steadily getting bigger. Sooner or later we’re going to be swept along in the avalanche of technological development.

Part of me wants to step back and hit pause. Do we really know what we’re getting ourselves into?!

This is by no means an exhaustive list. However, I hope it shed some light on the good and the bad sides of science. Science has had, and continues to have, a profound positive impact on life. However, it doesn’t come without its share of issues.

Only time will tell what the future holds and where scientific discovery will take us next (and at what cost).

Science, as we all know, plays a major role in our day to day life. Because of science, we are having an easy life and we must give the scientists and their discoveries the credit. Science has been playing a big role in the world since many years and the discoveries made by the scientists are remarkable. Science has its own advantages and disadvantages and people should know that. Also, depending too much on technologies and scientific discoveries might not turn out to be fruitful. Science has always been a part of every individual’s life. It plays a major role in all the sectors of the life and therefore it is important to understand the pros and cons of science.

Advantages of Science

Science plays a big role in our life and there are many advantages of it such as-

  • Better transport- with the increase in science and its technology there have been many things that are being manufactured. In earlier days transportation was a problem but today because of various discoveries and improvements in the technologies transportation has become very simple and easy.
  • Better communication- Communication is a major thing and helps in sustaining the human touch. In earlier days people used to communicate through letters or by sending pigeons. But with the improvement in technology and science, the ways of communication has improved and people now can even see each other while talking. It is giving a rise to the virtual world.
  • Increase in productivity- with the improvement in science a lot of machines are being invented which helps in increasing the productivity in the factories and generating higher revenues. It has also made the human work simpler and easier.
  • Improved health- Every day there is a new discovery in the medical sector and the scientists are making new medicines to fight the problems that are being faced by people.
  • Helps in being aware- With the improvement in science, people are getting aware of the surroundings and other things as well.

Disadvantages of science

With many advantages come certain disadvantages. Science has few disadvantages as well.

  • The risk to health- The increase in technology can be a risk to the health and people might fall sick because of the use of chemicals in the industries and other manufacturing companies.
  • Increases the chances of warfare- As the country progresses, the risk of warfare also increases. A lot of developed countries see the developing countries as a threat and the increase in their technologies can also be a risk.
  • Depending only on inventions- People nowadays are depending a lot on the inventions and the technologies, which in return is a problem and therefore there should be a limited usage of technologies.
  • Increases pollution- The use of chemicals and dumping the old gadgets increases the risk of pollution.
  • Increased competition- With the increase in scientific discoveries, there is always an ongoing competition between the people and the country.

Science is a need to humanity but the people should be aware of their advantages and disadvantages. Science also helps in the growth of a human being and of the community in general.

Science has revolutionized the way we do things, especially through technology. Through science, we are now able to understand some of the most complex phenomena in the world, most of which were unexplainable before science and technology. Below are some of the advantages and disadvantages of science.

1 . Develops technology : Science is the platform on which technology was built. Science has enabled man to create technology that has transformed the way people conduct business all around the world.

2 . Encourages innovation : Science is the platform on which innovation is built. Science helps in explaining various phenomena which then leads to an understanding of structures that lead to innovation.

3 . Satisfies curiosity : Through the many reasons and explanations provided by science, we are now able to satisfy our curiosity on how and why certain things are the way they are. We no longer need to wonder why the world is the way it is.

4 . Addresses societal issues : Science has been able to explain away and address some of the issues that have bedeviled society for a very long time.

5 . Informs policy : Through science, data can be collected on a given topic and the information can then be used to inform policymaking that will affect people.

6 . Solves everyday problems : Science is the solution to everyday problems faced by man. For instance, through science, man has been able to travel across the globe with the help of an airplane developed through science.

7 . Explains phenomena : Science has been able to explain certain phenomena that were previously unknown such as the surface of the moon and the day and night phenomena.

8 . Encourages creativity: Science plays an important role in encouraging creativity. Through explaining certain phenomena, people are able to work around the structures and come up with new and innovative structures.

9 . Discovery of solutions : Science is important because it allows people to discover solutions to problems that affect humankind.

10 . Solves mysteries : Science has been able to solve age-old mysteries that people did not know about such as the composition of the solar system.

1 . Science is expensive : Science is expensive and costly. A lot of money and resources have been used in researching and coming up with scientific explanations to phenomena that exist on the earth.

2 . Leads to the development of weapons : Science has necessitated the development of weapons of mass destruction which have been used in wars and destruction of property on a massive scale.

3 . Causes loss of lives : Science has played a major role in the development of weaponry which is then used to take people’s lives, sometimes innocent lives.

4. Information overload : Through science, there is a lot of information available on any given subject which may sometimes be too much in explaining a simple phenomenon.

5 . Scientific fraud : Through science, there have been increased cases of scientific fraud which include cybercrime where people end up losing a lot of money through computer crimes. This affects the socio-economic fabric of the people.

6 . Reduced privacy : Science has taken away the aspect of privacy from people’s lives where people can no longer do things on their own. Through platforms such as social media, we can now follow someone’s life all through.

7 . Reduced morals : Science has also impacted the morals of the people through the availability of content that may not always be good, especially where children are concerned.

8 . Leads to chaos : Science sometimes creates a sense of chaos instead of order. The unlimited information provided by scientific platforms has made it more confusing than informative in some cases.

9 . Involves a lot of politics : Science has also directly impacted the political facets of our society. It is no longer easy to get things done across the globe without the political hand playing a part, which may be detrimental to all the parties involved.

10 . Requires lobbying : Scientific agendas are not always smooth sailing. They require intense lobbying for these agendas to be fronted and accepted by country executives because of the huge amounts of money involved.

Benefits of science

The process of science is a way of building knowledge about the universe — constructing new ideas that illuminate the world around us. Those ideas are inherently tentative, but as they cycle through the process of science again and again and are tested and retested in different ways, we become increasingly confident in them. Furthermore, through this same iterative process, ideas are modified, expanded, and combined into more powerful explanations. For example, a few observations about inheritance patterns in garden peas can — over many years and through the work of many different scientists — be built into the broad understanding of genetics offered by science today. So although the process of science is iterative, ideas do not churn through it repetitively. Instead, the cycle actively serves to construct and integrate scientific knowledge.

And that knowledge is useful for all sorts of things: designing bridges, slowing climate change, and prompting frequent hand washing during flu season. Scientific knowledge allows us to develop new technologies , solve practical problems, and make informed decisions — both individually and collectively. Because its products are so useful, the process of science is intertwined with those applications:

  • New scientific knowledge may lead to new applications. For example, the discovery of the structure of DNA was a fundamental breakthrough in biology. It formed the underpinnings of research that would ultimately lead to a wide variety of practical applications, including DNA fingerprinting, genetically engineered crops, and tests for genetic diseases.
  • New technological advances may lead to new scientific discoveries. For example, developing DNA copying and sequencing technologies has led to important breakthroughs in many areas of biology, especially in the reconstruction of the evolutionary relationships among organisms.
  • Potential applications may motivate scientific investigations. For example, the possibility of engineering microorganisms to cheaply produce drugs for diseases like malaria motivates many researchers in the field to continue their studies of microbe genetics.

The process of science and you

This flowchart represents the process of formal science, but in fact, many aspects of this process are relevant to everyone and can be used in your everyday life. Sure, some elements of the process really only apply to formal science (e.g., publication, feedback from the scientific community), but others are widely applicable to everyday situations (e.g., asking questions, gathering evidence, solving practical problems). Understanding the process of science can help anyone develop a scientific outlook on life.

What do you know the pros and cons of a scientific approach, part 2: is the scientific method the best way to establish knowledge.

In Part 1 of this series, I discussed the illusion of knowledge in the context of COVID-19 and explained how much of what we think we know is actually belief, taken as truth, because it came from a source in which we have faith.

Philosophers as far back as Plato have defined knowledge as "justified true belief (JTB)." However, skeptics and Pyrrhonists have challenged this notion for centuries, reasoning that the same evidence one person considers valid in justifying a belief as "true," another may consider biased or incomplete ( David McClean , personal communication, 2020).

Against this backdrop, Enlightenment-era thinkers, including René Descartes and Charles Sanders Peirce, have promoted the scientific method as the best means for acquiring justifiable evidence to establish beliefs as true knowledge. In his influential 1877 essay, The Fixation of Belief , Peirce refined Aristotle's approach and extolled the virtues of the scientific method over other means of knowing, including blindly accepting facts from authority figures and relying on pure reasoning to establish knowledge without testing one's conclusions in the real world.

Indeed, the scientific method, with its insistence on direct observation and the objective testing of hypotheses, has been a major advance for our civilization, allowing us to catapult over superstitions and other belief systems that were either invalid or unreliable. Furthermore, it is still the best system for helping our species progressively advance toward truth. However, the scientific method, if not the entire scientific process, is not without its limitations in its ability to yield justifiable evidence to establish knowledge.

Over the past decade, we have learned that many of the scientific findings we have taken as fact have been retracted , either due to error or fraud ( Brainard & You, 2018 ), and as microbiologist Dr. Elisabeth Bik notes in a New York Times op-ed , advancing technology is only making things worse. In the field of psychology, specifically, we have been coming to terms with our own reckoning, known as the " replication crisis ," since 2011 ( Pashler & Wagenmakers, 2012 ). Though slightly less publicized, a replication crisis in the field of neuroradiology may end up having more serious consequences. In 2016, researchers from Sweeden ( Ecklund et al., 2016 ) discovered a statistical anomaly that likely invalidated 40,000 fMRI studies of neurology over a 15 year period.

Part of the problem with science is that as we try to study more sophisticated phenomena, we need more sophisticated equipment, which removes us further and further from direct observation and requires that we place our scientific faith in machines and other people's work. As Bec Crew (2016) points out in a summary of Ecklund et al's findings, "when scientists are interpreting data from an fMRI machine, they’re not looking at the actual brain... what they're looking at is an image of the brain divided into tiny 'voxels', then interpreted by a computer program."

Indeed, even mathematics, the purest of the STEM fields, seems to be suffering from a crisis of confidence , as the validity of countless proofs that form the foundation of modern mathematics has recently been called into question. Mathematician Kevin Buzzard told attendees at a 2019 conference that "the greatest proofs have become so complex that practically no human on earth can understand all of their details, let alone verify them," and he fears that many proofs widely considered to be true are wrong ( Mordechai Rorvig, 2019 ). In paraphrasing Buzzard, journalist Mordechai Rorvig explains that "new proofs by professional mathematicians tend to rely on a whole host of prior results that have already been published and understood...but there are many cases where the prior proofs used to build new proofs are clearly not understood." In philosophy , this is called the problem of infinite regress : where each current article of knowledge is dependent on some previous article of knowledge that is blindly taken as true or cannot be proven true, ad infinitum.

Getting back to science, let's assume a medical researcher, Dr. Feelbetter, wants to run an experiment to determine whether a lower dose of the antibiotic azithromycin would be equally effective as the standard 500 mg dose for treating acute sinusitis (i.e., sinus infections), but with fewer side effects. So she designs a randomized, double-blind study comparing a 250 mg dose to the 500 mg dose and also to a placebo -control.

In every experiment, the principal investigator has control over all of the parameters of the study and is forced to make subjective decisions about every single aspect of the investigation. In this particular experiment, Dr. Feelbetter has an endless list of decisions to make, including:

a) Who will serve as research participants? (Adults? Children? Men? Women? Members of a specific ethnic group susceptible to sinus infections? etc.)

b) How will "acute sinusitis" be defined, measured and diagnosed?

c) How will the drug, azithromycin, be administered? (Tablet? Liquid suspension? IV?)

d) How will the effectiveness of the drug be assessed? (X-ray scans of the nose? Physician exam? Patient self-report?)

e) Which statistical procedures will be used to analyze the data, and which variables, from an infinite set, will be statistically controlled in the analyses?

This is but a small fraction of the types of decisions that researchers need to make in scientific experiments, and the reality is that tremendous subjectivity goes into each of these decisions. How do we know whether Dr. Feelbetter, or any of the scientists we trust to conduct the research our lives depend on, made the right decisions in each of these areas, or resisted the temptation to engage in fraudulent practices?

One of the benefits of getting a Ph.D. in psychology is that we are trained not only as clinicians but as scientists; and as scientists, we are required to regularly present our research to peers in the scientific community at academic conferences and weekly brown bag meetings. Presenting one's research at such venues can be a terrifying experience because it is commonplace for other scientists to tear your research apart when they disagree with your methodology or your statistics. This is how things have always been in science and this reality led Max Planck, pioneer of quantum physics, to famously say:

"A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it."

Contrary to what many people think, most issues in science are not settled - a point made by NYU physicist Steven Koonin in his book about climate change , Unsettled . If climate change is too abstract for you, consider instead the uncertainty in the scientific community about whether masks are effective in stopping the spread of COVID .

I mention these things, not because I seek to attack science but because in order to defend it against pseudoscience and conspiracy theories it is first necessary to create a context of realistic expectations for scientific inquiry. I personally have faith in the majority of scientists and the majority of research findings published in peer-reviewed journals because, in my own work, this practice has served me well. But I must concede that while I have faith in the majority of peer-reviewed research findings, I don't know about them in the same way I know about the effects of gravity on my body when I jump in the air and come crashing back down to Earth (a point that was made a bit more comically by the slackers on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia ).

Furthermore, I must also confess that my experiences in science have made me aware of the limits of our ability to know things, even when using the scientific method, and these experiences have bolstered my faith in many other things that cannot be proven by science. In the end, I believe that we cannot hope to attain knowledge, we can only approach it, and our best efforts in knowing are supported by our direct experiences (i.e., what William James called "radical empiricism"), validated by the experiences of others, with investigations from multiple perspectives.

“We must give scientists the opportunity through funding and time to pursue curiosity-based, long-term, basic-science research. Work that does not have direct ramifications for industry or our economy is also worthy. There’s no telling what can come from supporting a curious mind trying to discover something new.”

Strickland, a Nobel Prize winner, explains that a great scientific discovery can only come with ample time for scientists to research, using her work as an example. She describes her work on chirped pulse amplification and its possible applications, including removing brain tumors. Her Nobel-awarded work was done over a long time, and scientists must be afforded ample time and funding to make breakthroughs like hers.

In his essay, Farago reviews an exhibition on the Tyrannosaurus Rex involving an important scientific discovery: it was a feathered dinosaur. He details the different displays in the exhibition, including models of other dinosaurs that helped scientists realize that the T-Rex had feathers. 

“Understanding this mechanism is just one step in undoing forever chemicals, Dichtel’s team said. And more research is needed: There are other classes of PFAS that require their own solutions. This process wouldn’t work to tackle PFAS out in the environment, because it requires a concentrated amount of the chemicals. But it could one day be used in wastewater treatment plants, where the pollutants could be filtered out of the water, concentrated and then broken down.”

Coleman explains a discovery by which scientists were able to break down a perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substance, a “forever chemical” dangerous to the environment. He explains how they could break the chemical bond and turn the “forever chemical” into something harmless. This is important because pollution can be reduced significantly, particularly in the water.

The transformative shift occurred in the 1980s with the move from brute force to learning approaches. This pivot was inspired by a deeper understanding of the learning process in the human brain. This era ushered in the development of neural networks: systems capable of learning from unstructured data without explicit programming for every scenario.

The historical development of AI reflects a continual effort to mirror the essence of human intelligence and learning. This evolution underscores the field's original goal: to create machines that can learn, adapt, and potentially think with a level of autonomy that was once the realm of science fiction.

What is the difference between discriminative and generative models in AI, and how is each type used?

The distinction lies in their approach to understanding and generating data. Discriminative models aim to categorize or differentiate between different types of data inputs. A common application of discriminative models is in facial recognition systems, where the model identifies who a particular face belongs to by learning from a dataset of labeled faces. This capability is applied in security systems, personalized user experiences, and verification processes.

On the other hand, generative models are designed to generate new data that resembles the training data. These models learn the underlying distribution of a dataset and can produce novel data points with similar characteristics. The concern revolves around the potential for AI systems to act autonomously in ways not intended or predicted by their creators, potentially causing harm to individuals, societies, or humanity at large. However, understanding the nature of this threat requires a nuanced consideration of what AI currently is and what it might become.

AI, as it exists today, operates within the confines of specific tasks it is designed for, lacking consciousness, desires, or intentions. AI has no intentions—no good intentions, no bad intentions. It learns what you teach it, period.

AI systems, including the most advanced neural networks, are tools created, controlled, and maintained by humans. The notion of AI going "rogue" and acting against human interests overlooks the practical and logistical constraints involved in developing and training AI systems. These activities require substantial human oversight, resources, and infrastructure, from gathering and preprocessing data to designing and adjusting algorithms. AI systems do not have the capability to access, manipulate, or control these resources independently.

In my opinion, the potential misuse of AI by humans poses a more immediate and practical concern. The development and deployment of AI in ways that are unethical, unregulated, or intended to deceive or harm, such as in autonomous weaponry, surveillance, or spreading misinformation, represent real challenges.

These issues underscore the importance of ethical AI development, robust regulatory frameworks, and international cooperation to ensure AI technologies are used for the benefit of humanity.

Why is regulating the deployment and development of AI challenging? What suggestions do you have for effective regulation to prevent misuse?

One significant hurdle is the pace at which AI technologies progress, outpacing regulatory frameworks and the understanding of policymakers.

The diverse applications of AI, from health care to autonomous vehicles, each bring their own set of ethical, safety, and privacy concerns, complicating the creation of a one-size-fits-all regulatory approach.

Additionally, the global nature of AI development, with contributions from academia, industry, and open-source communities worldwide, necessitates international cooperation in regulatory efforts, further complicating the process.

An effective regulatory framework for AI must navigate the delicate balance between preventing misuse and supporting innovation. It should address the ethical and societal implications of AI, such as bias, accountability, and the impact on employment while also fostering an environment that encourages technological advancement and economic growth.

I have one suggestion in terms of legislation that may at least put the brakes on the explosion of AI-related crimes in the coming years until we figure out what tailored legislation toward the crimes may be possible. What I suggest is to make the use of AI in a crime an  aggravating circumstance . Carrying a gun in and of itself may not be a crime. However, if you commit a robbery, it makes a lot of difference whether you are carrying a gun or not. It's an aggravating circumstance that makes the penalty go up significantly, and it stands to logic because now there is a greater existential threat. By classifying the utilization of AI in criminal activities as an aggravating factor, the legal system can impose harsher penalties on those who exploit AI for malicious purposes.

Why is it crucial for the global community to actively pursue AI research and innovation?

The future of AI should not be dictated by a handful of entities but developed through a global collaborative effort. Just as scientific endeavors like the LIGO project brought minds together to achieve what was once thought impossible [detecting gravitational waves], AI research demands a similar collective effort. We stand on the brink of discoveries that could redefine our understanding of intelligence, biology, and more. It's essential that we pursue these horizons together, ensuring the benefits of AI are shared widely and ethically.

Pausing or halting development efforts could inadvertently advantage those with malicious intent. If responsible researchers and developers were to cease their work in AI, it does not equate to a universal halt in AI advancement. If you put a moratorium on the development of AI, the good guys will abide by it and the bad guys will not. So, all we are achieving is giving the bad guys a "head start" to further their own agendas, potentially leading to the development and deployment of AI systems that are unethical, biased, or designed to harm. The development of AI technologies by those committed to ethical standards, transparency, and the public good acts as a counterbalance to potential misuse.

What potential does AI hold for the future, especially in terms of enhancing human capabilities rather than replacing them?

AI's role in automating routine and repetitive tasks frees humans to focus on more creative and strategic activities, thus elevating the nature of work and enabling new avenues for innovation. By removing mundane tasks, AI allows individuals to engage more deeply with the aspects of their work that require human insight, empathy, and creativity.

This shift not only has the potential to increase job satisfaction but also to drive forward industries and sectors with fresh ideas and approaches. The promise of AI lies not in replacing human capabilities but in significantly augmenting them, opening up a future where humans and machines collaborate to address some of the most pressing challenges facing the world today.

We can probably thank the Dutch adventure athlete Wim Hof — also known as “The Iceman” — for elevating icy plunges from a once-a-year New Year ‘ s pastime to a widely popular health and fitness trend.

He and other cold-water enthusiasts rave about the benefits, claiming that frigid showers, baths and swims can speed recovery, numb pain, prevent colds and lift mood. So, is it time to take the plunge? The answer likely depends on your current state of health, along with your goals. Let’s examine the science and cold therapy options.

What is cryotherapy?

“ Cryo ” comes from the Greek word krýos, which means icy cold. Thus, “cryotherapy” and “cold therapy” are interchangeable — and describe several methods for cooling down the body.

Ice application: Apply ice or a cold pack to a part of your body.

Cold showers: Stand in a stream of cold water with the hot water turned off.

Cold water immersion (CWI): Submerge or “cold plunge” yourself into a tub or body of water that’s 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celcius) or colder.

Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC): Use an expensive chamber that blasts you with freezing air — no water required.

The health benefits of ice baths and cold plunges

So, does the science of cryotherapy live up to the hype? For the most part, no. For a study published in Nature Scientific Reports , researchers asked study participants to try the Wim Hof method — which involves cold water exposure, breathing exercises and meditation — for 15 days. However, the study revealed no positive changes in blood pressure, heart rate, heart function or mood. In addition, while other scientific evidence seems to point to some benefits of cryotherapy, much of the research is too weak to support many of the claims with confidence. Moreover, consideration must also be given to the lengths you’d need to go to achieve, at best, a modest beneficial effect.

Still, assuming you are using cryotherapy in a safe manner, there’s no reason that you can’t enjoy the practice or feel that it provides you with a measure of fortitude.

Here is where the science stands on several cryotherapy claims and different types of applications:

Ice packs or cold plunges and athletic recovery

For many years, if an athlete was recovering from an injury, experts recommended icing. It was the “I” in the RICE formula, which stood for rest, ice, compression and elevation.

“The science and practical applications of icing have changed during the past two decades,” says Andrew Jagim, Ph.D., a sports medicine specialist with Mayo Clinic.

Instead of always reaching for ice, Jagim recommends a nuanced approach:

  • Use ice immediately after suffering an acute injury. That’s when it can help reduce swelling and pain.
  • Avoid or minimize icing after the first few days, as ongoing cold therapy may slow healing and delay recovery.

Similarly, cold therapy may help to reduce pain and soreness after hard training sessions or during periods of back-to-back competitions. When used consistently over time, however, cold therapy could potentially harm performance, says Dr. Jagim.

“If an athlete has an intense two-week period of practice or a three-day tournament and they are struggling with pain or soreness, I may recommend adding ice baths post-workout or throughout the day,” he says. “But I would advise against using them every day throughout an entire season or training cycle as research shows that they may hinder long-term adaptations in athletes, particularly for strength and muscle growth.”

Cold showers and immunity

It’s said that Thomas Jefferson submerged his feet in cold water each morning. In a letter he wrote to a physician, Jefferson noted the habit helped prevent the common cold.

Many of today’s cold-water enthusiasts make similar claims. The theory is that cold immersion and other short-term stressors — sometimes called “micro stressors” — may help train the immune system to become more resilient and better able to handle more significant stressors like injuries or infections.

In one of the few studies that tested this theory , researchers assigned 3,018 office workers to several intervention groups. Some workers served as a control and made no changes to their morning routines. Other office workers added a 30-, 60-, or 90-second blast of cold water at the end of their typical morning shower. After 60 days, the workers who took cold showers had taken 29 percent fewer sick days and reported increased energy levels.

Though those results seem promising, it’s not clear why the people in the study took fewer sick days. Because the researchers didn’t track markers of immunity, it’s not clear what physiological changes may or may not have occurred or influenced the outcomes. As such, much more research is needed to know with certainty whether cold showers or plunges truly benefit immunity. In the meantime, if you enjoy short cold showers, there’s little reason to avoid them.

Cryotherapy and pain

Icing restricts blood flow, slows nerve signaling and reduces swelling, all of which may turn down the volume of pain.

As mentioned earlier, icing immediately after suffering an injury can offer short-term relief. It’s also OK to reach for an ice pack to soothe the temporary discomfort of a headache or a tendonitis flare-up. However, for long-term treatment of injuries, such as muscle or joint strains, continual icing may delay the healing process. In this case, icing may repetitively reduce the blood flow and signaling mechanisms needed to facilitate tissue healing. Interestingly enough, heat therapy may be more beneficial as it can improve circulation, help promote healing, facilitate recovery from exercise and improve cardiovascular health.

Ice baths and metabolic health

Habitual cold-water immersion may help to reduce or change fat tissue, according to laboratory research done on rodents . These changes theoretically could lead to other downstream health benefits, including reduced cholesterol and improved blood sugar. However, just because rodents become a little leaner doesn’t mean that the same thing will happen in humans, were it to be studied.

Mental benefits of ice baths

Though research remains in its infancy, cold water therapy may help to lift fatigue and mood, possibly by triggering the release of endorphins and noradrenaline in the brain.

Based on one small study of 33 adults , a five-minute dip in cold water boosted feelings of alertness and attentiveness and decreased perceived distress and anxiety.

In another small study , when young adults immersed a hand in cold water for three minutes, they felt less sleepy — despite having awoken in the middle of the night — and could complete math problems more quickly than study participants who immersed a hand in warm water.

These studies are not only small but offer scenarios for achieving benefits that are far from practical — unless you really need to solve math problems at two in the morning. Larger-scale, randomized controlled trials in humans are needed to know whether this effect might extend to more realistic and routine situations.

Is cold plunging dangerous?

Scientists know much more about the dangers of cold temperatures than they know about the benefits.

Sudden submersion in chilly water can trigger a cold shock response that causes you to gasp and hyperventilate. If your head is underwater, this involuntary gasp and disruption to normal ventilation patterns could lead to drowning. The cold shock response also increases breathing, heart rate and blood pressure, all of which could pose health risks for people who are susceptible to cardiac events. In addition, when exposed to freezing water and frigid ambient conditions, you can develop hypothermia (dangerously low body temperature) or frostbite.

However, these dangers mainly apply to open-water swims and plunges out in nature.

“If someone adds ice to their bathtub and temporarily submerges themselves into water that is only 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, there likely isn’t a big level of concern or risk for any adverse effects,” says Dr. Jagim. “However, if someone walks across a frozen lake in sub-zero temperatures, cuts a hole in the ice, jumps into 30-degree to 40-degree waters, and then exits the lake into a cold and sub-zero environment while being wet, the risks would be significantly higher.”

To minimize the risks:

  • Consult a healthcare professional to make sure it’s safe for you to cold plunge.
  • Try home-based cryotherapy, such as a 30-second cold shower or short-duration submerges in a bathtub with cool water before opting for open-water swims or ice plunges in the middle of a frozen lake.
  • If you do try open-water plunging, always do it with others. Bring extra towels and clothes to quickly dry off and rewarm your body.

Are ice baths worth it?

To help people weigh the pros and cons, Dr. Jagim uses the analogy of cooking dinner.

Exercise, a nutritious diet, sleep and stress management are the veggies, whole grains and meat of the main course. Cold plunges and other cryotherapies serve as a potential garnish.

If you decide to try cryotherapy, experiment at home with someone nearby — and do so in your shower or bathtub, before trying it in open water.

Start with brief submersions of 30 seconds to a minute. Eventually, if desired, you can work up to 5 to 10 minutes at a time. Similarly, in the beginning, use cold — but not freezing — water.
