Extracellular matrix regeneration - prof. dr. collin ewald.

What is determining the molecular mechanism(s) that prolong health during aging? A very important question, especially in a continuously aging population.

part of nematode C. elegans

By 2030 almost every fourth person will be 65 or older in Switzerland, Europe, and USA. Since old age is the main risk factor for developing cancer, neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, and metabolic diseases, as well as other age-related pathologies, our lab focuses on determining the molecular mechanism(s) that prolong health during aging. To model the aging process, we are using the nematode  C. elegans as a pioneering system because of its short lifespan (3 weeks) and high conservation of genes in order to perform high-throughput screens to identify new molecular targets. Recently, we have discovered that extracellular matrix remodeling is required and sufficient for prolonging healthy aging; a novel and exciting potential target mechanism that we are currently investigating. Our candidate targets will be tested in mammalian cell cultures and mouse models in order translate them and to initiate clinical trials. These efforts aim to develop novel strategies to treat age-related pathologies and thereby improving human health during aging.

Research Interest

Scientific activities, publications.

Collin Ewald has a longstanding interest in the molecular biology of healthy aging and age-related pathologies. His curiosity for aging research was ignited by the finding that neurons could regulate aging in model organisms and learning how to meditate could change the expression of stress-associated genes in humans . Fascinated by neurons and the mind, he went to New York to pursue a PhD in Neuroscience with Chris Li working on Alzheimer’s disease (AD) related proteins in C. Elegans and determined the molecular mechanisms of how AD proteins affect aging, metabolism, and learning. After a short junior faculty position at the Joslin Diabetes Center and as an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School working on how NADPH-oxidase-mediated ROS production affects aging.
