Master's Student: The best parts of my program have been the field experience and collaborating with other individuals in my classes of different age groups. I have learned an immense amount from my colleagues in all of my courses and find that we support each other in a way that I never experienced as an undergrad at Miami University. In this field of work it is important that you have people who you can lean on and go to for questions and I have found that here in this program. I would say the only thing that I dislike about this program is how it is completely online. I say that only because I would love to have in-person classes with my colleagues to make those supports and relationships stronger. Overall this is an awesome program that Miami provides and I could not be any happier with my experience. ... Read 1 review

Continuing at Marquette for 2 more years for a Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree. The best part of being a student at Marquette, is meeting so many new people, interacting with professors and working in the campus spirit shop. My favorite class has been Human Gross Anatomy. I have learned a lot from this class and being able to see everything I am learning about is very helpful for those hard tests. A great part of being in the DPT 3+3 program allows me to finish my undergraduate degree in 3 years and continuing on to the Doctor of Physical Therapy graduate studies for the next 3 years. What is the DAT – Doctorate of Athletic Training

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

Subscribe: Spotify | RSS

Is the DAT the right choice for your advanced degree? Should you pursue your Ph.D. or maybe an Ed.D.?

Dr. Matthew Drescher, a PhD candidate, already earned his DAT from ISU and joins me to answer some of my questions. In the next two podcast we will discuss the Ph.D. and Ed.D. and compare them.

DAT

What is the DAT

The DAT is a post professional degree program. It's a clinical doctorate stands for Doctorate of Athletic Training.

Most of the programs that are currently across the country are focused on clinical education, advanced clinical education and clinical leadership, but I kind of looked at in a different light so I tend to look at it as a metaphysical idea

It's a mindset to meet the gap is a commitment to the profession to be the leader and push forward.

  • Promote advanced practice leadership
  • Promote us as a profession as healthcare providers
  • Helping lead the profession forward
We understand that's a hard thing to do, but we can do hard things and the DAT is a commitment to that mindset to continue doing what's right for the profession and moving it forward. – Dr. Matthew Drescher

What would I expect out of my DAT education?

The beauty of the post professional degree, is that it can be marketed to the market. So, all of the programs, hit on the same central tenets, but they all do them in a different way.

When you're thinking about going into this level of education, it's really about aligning that with your values.

Part what I learned in the ISU DAT was really how to be a clinical leader, what it looks like to be that person, the person who does hard things, the person who asks the hard questions.

Promoting yourself as a lifelong learner, that's something that I value immensely. Some other programs focus on different aspects.

At ISU we focus a lot on manual therapy and advanced manual therapy skills, some programs focus on more of the leadership aspect. Or they focus on what we call practice-based research, but each program has a little bit of a nuance.

The DAT should help make changes at the system level. How do you think that that helps me get Athletic Trainers into the intermediate setting?

I think you make a really good point. I guess you could call it the clout, having that title of Dr. Jackson would bring.

But part of that mindset of the DAT is that it's not really about the degree to the outside world.

It's, an easier concept to understand that you're a doctor versus You're not a doctor but when you're with,

The concept is not necessarily the clout, but it's the skill and the knowledge to be able to make the changes to know the steps to how those changes have to be made. You can't just run in and say, put an athletic trainer here, please. It's knowing how to line up all of the blocks to work with you and that's what I mean more about a systems level change.

Because at that level, the systems are dynamic, and they're complex, so being able to know how to speak that language to align the blocks to prove that value and worth. That's something, those are skills that the DAT degree can give you.

On top of the confidence and credibility that the degree itself carries, I would argue that your experience carries a lot, but you are also going to have to explain what that means to someone who's not familiar with athletic training, whereas the degree on top of your experience and then on top of that, those skills are going to help you carry that effort.

I look at it more of like a medium to carry the skill versus a be all end all.

Fortunately, there are a few Doctor of Athletic Training (DAT) programs that are currently available through a 100% online format . These types of programs make learning convenient for those with full-time employment. With that in mind, please consider that some online programs may require synchronous courses, as well as, asynchronous classwork. The synchronous format means some of your classes may require you to attend coursework or lectures at a certain time of the day to complete the requirements. Getting in shape takes time. If you want to get fit like Alan Ritchson  and the other celebrities you see on TV, you need to put in the work. Take it one day at a time and learn to appreciate your progress.

In addition, many DAT programs are offered through the hybrid format. In this setting, your school program is predominantly offered online, however, they also require on-campus attendance. For example, some demand 4-5 days of on-campus work per semester or have clinical residency requirements for graduation.

If possible, exercise is something that most of us try to avoid. While the benefits have been proven to improve the quality of life, sometimes, it’s just hard to develop the habit. However, if you are an athletic trainer, being in good physical condition is your job or at least part of it! To reach your full potential, why not earn a Doctor of Athletic Training degree to help you assist others? Encourage others to maintain good physical and emotional health while playing sports or other related activities.

What does an Athletic Trainer do?

DAT_1

Most athletic trainers have a master’s degree in their field; however, trainers with doctorate degrees are desired by most employers. They work with all ages and types of injuries caused by stress to our musculoskeletal system, not only on the court or football field but to others who have physically challenging jobs. They assess, diagnose, treat, and use rehabilitation for all types of injuries, although sports-related injuries are their specialty. Athletic trainers also support nutritional and mental health.

How do I earn my Doctor of Athletic Training degree?

The Doctor of Athletic Training program is designed to help those individuals already established in the field achieve an advanced level of expertise in athletic training, perhaps in sports medicine, in a leadership position, as well as those interested in research or academia.

DAT4

Your program should also include steps in dealing with psychological issues within athletic training, as well as leadership and entrepreneurship. You will also learn about neurological evaluations and techniques and about fitness for our aging population.

If you would like to focus your studies on the area of research or teaching about health and wellness to others, you may want to consider a Ph.D. in Kinesiology. Coursework may include nutrition, metabolism, and vitamins, in addition to research methods within the field of physical education and sports-related injury prevention.

What kind of career and salary can I expect with my DAT degree?

DAT_3

With your Doctor of Athletic Training degree, you can easily transition into physical therapy, consulting, or into the field of chiropractic medicine. If you are a true sports enthusiast, perhaps a head athletic trainer for your favorite sports team is your dream job.

The BLS states that the typical salary, as of May 2022, for an athletic trainer was $53,840 per year; however, the top highest ten percent earned upwards of $70,000 per year. Of course, with all careers, your salary will be dependent upon your experience, job title, and job location.

Do I need a license to be an Athletic Trainer?

athletic trainer

Most states (except California) require licensure by the Board of Certification (BOC) which provides the credentials of “Athletic Trainer Certified” (ATC). You will need to pass an intensive certification exam to gain your licensure, and continued education is required, as well, to maintain your license.

What schools offer Doctor of Athletic Training programs?

DAT6

If you can manage to incorporate a doctorate degree program into your schedule and finances, you won’t regret it. Typically, the higher your degree, the more money you can carry to the bank. Of course, the number of people you will help through your work in athletic training will bring you a gratifying amount of satisfaction, offering rewards for you and your clients.

What classes can I expect in a Doctor of Athletic Training degree program?

A Doctor of Athletic Training degree program typically consists of courses that focus on the scientific foundations of:

  • sports medicine,
  • injury assessment and management,
  • therapeutic exercise,
  • and sports psychology
  • biomechanics,
  • pharmacology,
  • and research… plus much more.

The program will typically require clinical experience in which students can apply their knowledge and skills in a clinical setting.

Alumni Spotlight: Elizabeth León Zaragoza ‘19 ‘23

Photo of Elizabeth Leon Zaragoza in the center with clip art of bubbles surrounding it.

Name : Elizabeth León Zaragoza

Degrees : Class of 2019 MSK Kinesiology, Class of 2023 PhD Higher Education

Current Role : Assistant Professor - Athletic Training, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay

Why did you choose UNLV? What led you to pursue your degree in higher education?

I came to Vegas to work as a GA in the athletic training program, drawn by my passion for interacting with athletics and guiding students. There, I met Dr. Nancy Lough, a key figure in sports management, who convinced me to pursue a Ph.D.

How did UNLV prepare you for your career?

UNLV and the higher education program gave me a different perspective on what should be done in athletic training to serve students better. Having research experience from UNLV has helped me figure out what needs to be done in the athletic training field. Also, the Holmes Scholars program helped mold me into who I am today; I learned about the job market, how to negotiate, how to network professionally, and how to look for jobs effectively. I also was involved with the Latinx Graduate Student Association.

What advice would you give to students currently at UNLV?

Reach out and try to get out of your comfort zone! The more you get involved, the more relationships you will make, and learn more about others and yourself.

Any fun facts about yourself?

I love to learn about languages! I’m fluent in English and Portuguese, I’m studying Korean, and I also know some Italian!

Are you a COE alum? Let us know what you’ve got going on by submitting a Class Note or getting involved !
