This may involve studying eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient design strategies, green building certifications, and incorporating sustainable principles into interior design processes.
  • Technology Integration: Doctoral programs often incorporate the study of technology’s impact on interior design. This could include exploring smart home systems, IoT (Internet of Things) applications, VR (Virtual Reality), AR (Augmented Reality), and how these technologies can enhance design functionality, aesthetics, and user experiences.
  • Psychology and Design: Some programs include courses or research projects that delve into the psychological aspects of interior design. This could involve understanding human behavior and emotions and how design elements influence interior spaces’ well-being, productivity, and satisfaction.
  • Business and Design Management: Certain programs offer components focusing on design entrepreneurship, marketing, project management, or other business-related topics to equip students with managerial skills necessary for leadership roles within the design industry.
  • Architectural Integration: Given the close relationship between interior design and architecture, some doctoral programs may encourage interdisciplinary studies that explore how the two fields intersect and complement each other.
  • Social Sciences and Design: Research in sociology, anthropology, or cultural studies might be integrated into the program to understand how societal trends, cultural norms, and diverse perspectives impact design decisions and user experiences in interior spaces.

Including cross-disciplinary studies enriches the doctoral experience, providing students with a broader perspective, fostering innovation, and preparing them to address multifaceted challenges in the ever-evolving field of interior design. This interdisciplinary approach helps graduates become well-rounded professionals capable of integrating diverse knowledge into their design practice and research.

PhD Home Solutions

PhD Home Solutions is a family-owned and operated tile and stone installation company specializing in Kitchen Backsplashes, Fireplaces, and Feature Walls.

IMG_20210402_122339909

We have been in the tile business since 1993. The PhD team consists of our son Jackson, a master of cuts; our daughter Emma, the resident artist; Carrie, a design specialist with an excellent eye for color and space; and Paul, who thrives on the tricky layouts and logistics.

Most of our jobs can be completed in two or three days from start to finish. We use the highest quality products and techniques because we like to sleep comfortably, knowing that we’ve done our best.

We always prefer to meet you in person to discuss your project, but also understand that scheduling can be difficult. Many estimates can be done with pictures sent by email or text, along with a few details about the project.

The PhD team also offers limited handyman services to complement the work being performed. For instance, it is often the case that your old outlets clash with your beautiful new tile. We can change the electrical and switchplates to a color that better suits the new surroundings.

Please search “PhD Home Solutions” on either Facebook or Instagram to see more about us and our work.

Some of the best contractors we’ve ever hired. Ultra friendly people, super responsive, and did incredible work. We had them install tile for our backsplash, and they did a super job! It’s so great when you find people that really care, it makes working with them so great.

Rick Gonzalez

We finally (finally) got these projects done. Yay! PhD Home Solutions came to the rescue! They do excellent wall tile work plus other odds and ends. They mounted a bathroom cabinet and ceramic tiled its wall, installed a countertop and wall tile toilet in our laundry, removed an old and replaced with new toilet, and did some detail trim work under our main entry door. Fast response, super nice folks, efficient, detailed, fast and they know what they’re doing really, really well. PhD’s prices are reasonable. The owners Paul and Carrie are fabulous and we highly recommend them to anyone who needs work done in the home. Kudos!

Amanda Curry

Carrie, Paul and their son Jackson were an absolute joy to work with and did an amazing job on our kitchen backsplash. I received their name from the Tile Shop and Carrie called me back within an hour of me calling them. She even came over the same day to take a look at the work we wanted done. They were super flexible with me when our job was scheduled for the next day and I decided I hated the tile I picked out! They worked me back in within a few weeks. When they came out, the demo was very clean and Carrie has a great eye for where each tile should go. Highly professional, very friendly and the job was completed perfectly! Recommend them to anyone!

Robin Haas

If you are looking for an efficient and reasonably priced company to install your tile backsplash or accent wall your search is over if you go with PhD Home Solutions. Paul and Carrie Dunbar have been in business for about 29 years. Their easy-going approach makes the project take shape without totally disrupting your life. The quality of their work is outstanding. I would not hesitate to hire them again for future projects.

Jiwon Noh Lee

PhD did a great job with our backsplash and island tiling. The whole process was seamless, and I couldn't be more happy with the experience and the end result. Paul and Carrie are responsive, reliable and professional. We ordered the tiles from Tile Shop, and they picked up the tile and installed it in 3 days. I would highly highly recommend them.

Linley Smith

Paul and Carrie did a herringbone backsplash in my kitchen. Their work is literal perfection. I was given their name by The Tile Shop in Scottsdale. I was amazed how they carried the pattern around the corners of our kitchen. I highly recommend them. They cleaned everything up each day and were timely and professional. We remodeled our whole kitchen and they were by far the most professional part of our process. Highly recommend.

Mathew Holm

Paul did a complete remodel on our master bathroom shower and it turned out very nice. I would recommend him.

PhD Home Solutions is one of the best companies I have ever encountered. All staff was courteous, professional, and skilled…clear experts in their field. They worked very hard to be neat as possible and offer a very precise end result. I was referred to them by The Tile Shop and immediately knew we found a quality company after meeting Carrie to review the project. She sent us a very detailed quote much faster than I anticipated, and Carrie continued to be exceptional with communication throughout the entire process. There were no extra quote surprises along the way, and they were great with ideas. We could not be happier with the look of the new tile.

Andrew Scoggan

PhD did a great job with our kitchen backsplash! We’re very happy with how the project went from start to finish and would definitely recommend them.

Update Your Space

Increase your space, build a new space, visualize your space.

Keith Pickering completed the construction of my personal residence here in Scottsdale, Arizona. The home was very complex and consisted of approximately 8000 square foot of livable space with a basement, which is unique for Arizona. During the construction of my residence, Mr. Pickering was extremely reliable and capable of handling all challenges that were presented. Any change orders or problems were always communicated effectively with a solution.

PhD has continually impressed my wife and I with their prompt, courteous and overwhelming professional approach to every task we have put before them. As one who works in the construction industry everyday I can say there is no one better that I have worked with!

We contracted to have a new home built and Keith Pickering was the general contractor. Having come from a family of custom builders and having built several homes previously, I am quite knowledgeable in the building process. I am very impressed with Keith’s knowledge of construction, his ability to read blueprints and his interaction with sub-contractors. He has a very calm and approachable demeanor and communicates well not only with the homeowner, but with the other people involved in the construction process. I would not hesitate to use him again on another project and would highly recommend him.

Precision Home Development helped us remodel the kitchen and bathrooms, wood flooring, lighting and painting along with many other touches that completed the remodel. They were always professional, easy to reach and concerned with our satisfaction. When we had a problem it was always addressed promptly.

We have worked with Precision Home Development on two separate occasions, first to redo our fireplace and second to redo all the floors on our lower level (tile and wood) plus several smaller projects that included masonry and plumbing work/upgrades. In both instances the estimates for both price and time were spot on. Keith and his team are great; they are both professional and personable. The job site is left clean at the end of each day and the quality of work is excellent. We loved the results in both cases and plan to use PHD again for our next remodeling project.

Keith J. Pickering finished the construction of our personal residence in 2009. Construction was commenced in 2007 by Classic Stellar Homes, and the home was about 40% complete when Classic Stellar Homes went out of business in 2008. Mr. Pickering took over all general contractor responsibilities and successfully completed the construction of our home in a timely manner. Our home is approximately 15,000 square feet. I highly recommend Precision Home Development for future projects. I know that he would do a great job in all aspects of construction, including financial responsibilities associated with the business.

I am sending you this note to let you know how pleased Bob and I are with Precision Home Development’s renovation project at our home in Scottsdale. I was a little nervous about completing this project long distance from our home in Pittsburgh. We liked the way we were kept informed of the project status and the ongoing communication whenever issues/questions arose. Thanks for making our new home so beautiful. We love it!!

We’re pleased to recommend Keith Pickering for the purpose of constructing a home. We hired Keith as the general contractor for the construction of our new home. Keith developed a detailed schedule and budget estimate for the project. Using his extensive knowledge and experience with home construction in this area Keith quickly established a network of reliable subcontractors. He then managed and integrated the efforts of these subcontractors completing our home on schedule and on budget. Keith impressed us throughout the project with his capability, his dependability, his attention to detail and his honesty. If we were to undertake another construction project we would certainly hire Keith again, and we recommend Keith without hesitation.

Piero Lissoni

Lissoni, along with Roberto Gavazzi, Boffi’s current CEO, would help revamp the company from the ground up. When he joined the brand, which had emerged as an industry leader in the 1950s, it had reached a crossroads: After the 1972 death of Dino Boffi, one of founder Piero Boffi’s three sons and the brand’s forward-facing creative force, the nearly 40-year-old business had lost the unique, pioneering edge that had set it apart. By the mid-1980s, Dino’s brother Paolo was looking for a visionary to help lead the company into the 21st century. With a factory headquartered just outside Milan, he had quick access to some of the greatest design talent in Italy, if not the world, and yet he took a risk by naming the young Lissoni as art director and bringing on Gavazzi as managing director.

“We were two young boys in the middle of a great adventure,” Lissoni recalls. “We redesigned everything with a completely different approach, zero traditional attitude. We touched the company everywhere—the technologies, the models, the aesthetics, the graphics, the communications, the shops. It’s not enough to design one product. It’s not enough to design a new product. The most important [thing] was to control the whole process.”

In Beijing, Lissoni & Partners transformed an abandoned industrial building into the neo-brutalist Shangri-La Shougang Park—Beijing hotel

In the early ’80s, Lissoni attended the Polytechnic University of Milan, where he had the opportunity to study under a jaw-dropping roster of design masters including Marco Zanuso, Achille Castiglioni, and Carlo de Carli. After graduating, Lissoni founded the interdisciplinary design firm Lissoni Associati with Nicoletta Canesi, now the project manager at Lissoni Architecture New York . The appointment at Boffi soon followed. In 1992, the brand released its second Lissoni-designed kitchen, the Latina, which would be a game changer. The unit’s interchangeable components proved massively popular, setting Boffi back on track to become a leader in the luxury market once again.

Lissoni brings a residential feel to the interiors of the Sanlorenzo SX112 yacht.

But Lissoni isn’t known for just kitchens. He is currently a creative director for numerous brands running the gamut from furniture to yachts (including Alpi, B&B Italia, Porro, and Sanlorenzo Yachts ) and has designed residential, commercial, and hospitality projects such as the Shangri-La Shougang Park in Beijing, the Dorothea Hotel in Budapest, and headquarters for Fantini and Glas Italia , among others. Throughout it all he retains his signature elegantly minimalist style.

“Simplicity is not easy,” he says, “because in making something simple, you need to be very, very complex in the back. If you don’t, you become banal.”

Known for his wit, Lissoni often includes moments of levity in his projects, such as the sentry sheep in the living room of this countryside holiday home.

“Piero Lissoni is one of the most interesting names in contemporary Italian design,” says Sergio Buttiglieri, style director at Sanlorenzo Yachts, for which Lissoni has designed the interiors on the SP110, SX100, SX76, and other models. The architect is currently working with the company on the interiors of a superyacht featuring a groundbreaking fuel system developed in partnership with Siemens Energy. And, in addition to residential commissions in Saudi Arabia, Budapest, and Dubai, he also had a handful of debuts at the recent Salone del Mobile and Milan Design Week. That seemingly inhuman pace, he says, is more or less his life: “no rest.”

The design for Fantini’s HQ reflects his ability to work with modernism at a human scale.

Talking to Lissoni, one gets the sense that he doesn’t actually want to rest—not when there are so many opportunities to create. “In my experience, the design trade is nothing without curiosity,” he writes in the preface to his recent book, Environments , published by Rizzoli. Such inquisitiveness underpins a creative process that relentlessly centers the human experience.

“I draw everything by myself,” Lissoni says. “I draw on paper, or sometimes electronic paper like the iPad, but I draw—I never use the supersophisticated software to design something, because [you must] think.” Drawing by hand, he explains, triggers “this special connection, this special synapsis between your brain and the hand. When you move the pencils, I believe this moment, it’s absolutely crucial to put meaning inside a project.”

How can we make PhD training fit for the modern world? Broaden its philosophical foundations

  • Ganesh Alagarasan 0

You have highlighted how PhD training assessment has stagnated, despite evolving educational methodologies (see Nature 613 , 414 (2023) and Nature 627 , 244; 2024 ). In particular, you note the mismatch between the current PhD journey and the multifaceted demands of modern research and societal challenges.

At Milan Design Week, the Power Is Often in the Collection

The annual festival of furnishings and household objects allows for expressing ideas through design.

Several pieces of wooden furniture are grouped together, including a bench, small tables, a chair and a tall console.

By The New York Times

This article is part of our Design special report previewing Milan Design Week.

Milan Design Week, which runs through Sunday, allows companies, collectives or designers to express a unified point of view that transcends the attractions of any single product. All the hand-carved furnishings shown by Zanat, a company in Bosnia and Herzegovina, for example, reflect a dedication to craft that the owners inherited from generations of woodworking family members, though different international designers contributed to the group. This is just one of many examples found through the festival of collections augmenting the messages of their parts.

A Global Get-Together

Zanat, a Bosnian furniture company led by Orhan Niksic, a descendant of generations of woodworkers, has returned to the Salone del Mobile with a dozen new products designed by eminent international designers.

Among the group is Naoto Fukasawa’s Genken console, which is named for the Japanese word for hallway and meant to signify the transition point between inside and outside a home. The tabletop evokes the outstretched arms of a welcoming host, and the storage box displayed on the surface was inspired by a seashell that hides its treasure (or in this case, house keys) within. Zanat is also introducing Mr. Fukasawa’s new Buna chair, a handcrafted piece that flows like the Balkan river of its name.

Oblong surfaces and short legs define Sebastian Herkner’s Sinja coffee table, a piece reflective of traditional low tables around which families in Mr. Niksic’s native Bosnia and Herzegovina would dine while sitting on the floor. Mr. Herkner also contributed the conical-legged Stolac side table.

Korzo, a bistro table by Patrick Norguet, departs slightly from its all-wood companions with its base of copper- or black-powder-coated steel.

The collection, which also includes a dining table and bench by Jean-Marie Massaud, and a bed (the company’s first) and night stand by Michele de Lucchi, is on view Tuesday through Sunday at the Salone del Mobile, Pavilion 24, stands L02-04; zanat.org . — JULIE LASKY

Witnessing a Metamorphosis

You should never ask a creative person to do something, Allegra Hicks said. “Because they will do it.”

Ms. Hicks, an Italian-born artist and designer, knows from experience. For Venice Glass Week in 2022, she painted a 63-square-meter (678-square-foot) tapestry before it was embroidered with 88 pounds of glass beads.

Last fall, she designed an installation for a 16th-century crypt: A diaphanous hanging was unfurled against one wall and a soft, ceiling-high crimson drop was positioned in front of the other. With that work, Ms. Hicks said, she sought “to transform the energy of the space.”

The idea of transformation also animates Metamorphosis, Ms. Hicks’s 11-piece collection for Nilufar, the Milanese design gallery. A painting on linen immersed in resin becomes a table top. Beneath it, hand-crocheted material cast in bronze becomes its base. Elsewhere, crocheted bronze becomes a lamp. The work, Ms. Hicks said, is about “transforming something that is considered soft and feminine” by giving it strength and “a kind of weight.”

Completing the living-room-like display are a silk-embroidered hanging, an embroidered sofa, side tables and a bar cabinet, with a hand-knotted rug tying everything together. Ms. Hicks gave the rug the appearance of a molting lizard’s skin — a look that reflects her own creative transformations.

When she was younger, the 63-year-old designer said, she was more cautious. Now, she added, “I don’t feel any boundaries.”

Time for Yourself

“There is a great contrast between the solidity of stone and smoothness of steel,” Patricia Urquiola said about the marriage of natural and industrial materials in her new bathroom collection for Salvatori. The 22-piece group of fixtures and accessories, called the Small Hours, treats the chamber as an indulgent retreat. The name invokes the late night or early morning stretches when everyone around you is fast asleep and the world is yours to enjoy privately.

“It’s your own time,” said Gabriele Salvatori, who leads the company.

Mr. Salvatori said he handed the collection’s design to Ms. Urquiola because “she has one of the most precious traits every human being should have: the ability to look sideways and challenge the status quo.” Both he and his collaborator cited the extensive use of steel as a detour from the norm in upscale bathrooms.

The line includes wall-hung, countertop and free-standing wash basins; a brushed stainless-steel backsplash; LED-illuminated mirrors; storage items; and a round bathtub.

Ms. Urquiola described the production process as “slow and passionate.” Humor was also involved. The mirrors can be ordered with the words, “Believe me or your eyes,” inspired by a famous Marx Brothers quote. The impish gesture, Mr. Salvatori said, is reminiscent of a message scrawled in lipstick across the glass.

The collection, which will be available in July, is on view Tuesday through Sunday in Salvatori’s showroom at Via Solferino 11; salvatoriofficial.com . — ARLENE HIRST

A Double Dose of Design

By now, the architect, designer and Milan fixture Piero Lissoni can consider himself a Salone del Mobile veteran. Over the past four decades, he has designed furniture, kitchens and materials for many of the standout companies represented at the fair. Even this year, his list of projects sounds more like a life’s work. “B&B Italia, Flos, Porro, De Padova, Kartell,” he rattled off. “A new generation of kitchens for Boffi. New sofas for Living Divani.”

But the thrill, he said, never gets old: “The design week, for me, is like a beautiful performance. Every year I discover new things. It’s a no-limits invitation to Disneyland.”

As usual, Lissoni creations will be distributed among the Salone fairgrounds and major city-center showrooms. But this year the designer is also inviting visitors to peek into his own headquarters in the fashionable Brera district.

“The open studio is a great moment to show the public our day-by-day life,” he said. In addition to flaunting the studio’s recent architectural projects — like the Dorothea Hotel in Budapest and the spa at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas — the creative team will display the results of its annual in-house competition to design a full-scale installation for Milan Design Week. This year, the entries skewed botanic, Mr. Lissoni said. The results are “very poetic; you’ll have the feeling of being inside a blossom.”

And what does the winner get? “I offer a beautiful coffee and one gin and tonic in the afternoon,” he said. “Listen, it’s a good prize.”

The open studio runs Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lissoni & Partners, Via Goito 9; lissoniandpartners.com . — LAURA MAY TODD

Reimagining the Home Interior

In “Objects May Shift,” organized by the Rhode Island School of Design (and RISD’s first-ever global multidisciplinary presentation of work, according to a news release), students and faculty members from several departments have produced an exhibition exploring “our ever-evolving relationship to — and experience of — the domestic interior.”

Presented at SaloneSatellite — the pavilion at the Salone del Mobile that focuses on the work of young designers — the show is directed by Anais Missakian, a faculty member of the RISD textile department for more than three decades, and Pete Oyler, an associate professor of furniture design.

“Objects May Shift” is the outgrowth of a studio course called Topics in Exhibition that drew from the departments of ceramics, furniture design, glass, graphic design, industrial design, interior architecture and textiles. Among the pieces are “The Knit Wiggle,” an upholstered seat that inflates to become a wall, and “Untitled (Hoard),” a woven jacquard tapestry that combines A.I.-generated imagery with images of wealth, hoarding and trash. “Chair 03, Amate,” a seat with a gridlike structure, was made of cornstarch, cotton, mulberry fiber and post-consumer paper pulp.

Referring to the collection’s interlacing of disciplines, Ms. Missakian noted that “good design is porous as well as functional.”
