DAAD Scholarships - An Overview

in the lobby

Would you like to study, carry out research or learn German in Germany and are you looking for funding? Every year, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports well over 100,000 German and international students and researchers around the globe – making it the world's largest funding organisation of its kind. Learn more about our scholarship options.

DAAD scholarships are aimed primarily at graduates, doctoral students and postdocs and are awarded for study and research visits to universities and non-university research institutions in Germany. In some programmes, internships are also funded.

DAAD awards Research Grants – One-Year Grants for Doctoral Candidates for PhD students from almost all countries of origin. A grant for a full doctoral programme in Germany is offered primarily to applicants from developing and threshold countries (based on the OECD-DAC list ).

Scholarships for a Master's degree in Germany are available, in particular, for persons from industrial countries.

Students and doctoral candidates who are at risk of being denied educational or other rights in their country of origin have the chance to apply for a scholarship from the Hilde Domin Programme . Potential candidates cannot themselves apply for participation in the scholarship programme but are nominated by an institution or organisation that is a legal entity domiciled in Germany. Thereafter, suitable candidates will be contacted by the DAAD and invited to apply via the DAAD application portal.

Also available are so-called " Sur-place and Third Country Programmes " in which students and young scientists and researchers are offered DAAD funding for a graduate programme, doctoral programme or postdoc period in their home country or region.

If you wish to apply for a DAAD scholarship, please read the call for applications for your chosen scholarship programme in the scholarship database , paying particular attention to application deadlines. The scholarship database will take you to the application portal. Scholarship applications are reviewed by independent and voluntary selection committees, which also decide on the allocation of scholarships. Selection is based on subject-related criteria.

DAAD scholarships do not have to be paid back. They usually consist of a monthly scholarship payment (currently, for example,  € 934 for graduates and € 1,200 for doctoral/PhD students) and a flat-rate travel allowance. In many cases, DAAD also provides you with health, accident and personal liability insurance . Depending on scholarship programme, here are also additional benefits such as a one-off research allowance, family benefits or funds for language courses. The benefits offered by the respective scholarship programme are described in the call for applications in the scholarship database .

2716 Study programs

If you are looking to come and study in Germany then you have surely heard of the DAAD - because it is “the world's largest funding organization” of its kind and supports tens of thousands of students each year. If you haven’t, then this is a great article to introduce to you as you will definitely hear about them throughout your study journey.

The DAAD is actually called the German Academic Exchange Service. In German, it is called the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst which is where the “DAAD” comes from.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

  • Headquarter:  Bonn.
  • Category:  non-religious/Apolitical.
  • Main sponsor:  German government (mainly BMBF, BMZ).
  • Affiliation:  none, neutral.
  • Annual budget:  approx. 558 million €.
  • No. of fellows:  145,659 (2019).

Luckily for you, the two founders of MyGermanUniversity both used to be directors of local DAAD offices abroad (Tobias in Italy, Stephan in Peru) and have a great deal of knowledge and experience regarding the organization. Therefore, it seems fitting that this is used to help international students like yourself get an inside look into how the DAAD can help you fund your dream study program in Germany!

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the largest German funding organization for international academic cooperation and is, therefore, the largest scholarship provider for international students looking to study in Germany.

Since its foundation in 1925 by a student in Heidelberg (see below), the DAAD has financed more than 2.5 million scholars in Germany and abroad. True to its motto, "Change through Exchange," the DAAD finances both Germans who want to go abroad and international students who want to come to Germany.

In the last decades, the DAAD has grown considerably. It now funds about 150,000 people per year and has an annual budget of half a billion euros. The majority of this money comes from public funds (the Federal Government and the European Union). Nevertheless, the DAAD remains independent. As an association of the German universities and their student bodies, it represents their interests and is not a governmental organization.

In addition to its headquarter in Bonn (the old capital of Germany) and the branch in Berlin, the DAAD has a worldwide network of:

  • 18 regional offices and 51 information centers (in more than 60 countries), plus
  • approx. 500 DAAD “Lektors” (who teach mainly German language and culture).

So, wherever you live, the chances are high that the DAAD has an office close to you. You should not hesitate to contact the local DAAD representatives who offer regular counseling hours (of course, for free) - especially for DAAD scholarships. Here you find the list of all DAAD offices worldwide .

Geeky Stuff Box

Did you know the foundation of the DAAD in 1925 originally goes back to the initiative of a single student from Heidelberg? In the early 1920s, a young student of Social and Political Studies (Carl Joachim Friedrich) was able to leave his German Alma Mater and study abroad in the US. And since he was so impressed by this experience he wanted to share it with others - by organizing scholarships to go abroad. After his return to Germany, he founded the “Akademischer Austauschdienst e.V.” (AAD) which offered scholarships to his fellow students in Heidelberg. However, when moving to Berlin and merging with two other organizations (1931), it became a national initiative and opened to students from all subjects ( source ).

Almost 100 different DAAD scholarship programs for internationals

guy staring at this tablet with a happy face

International students are sometimes reluctant to seek out funding because they believe that they must be German citizens or EU nationals. With the DAAD, nationality is not an issue! While there are certain scholarships that are targeted to students from specific regions, there are also general scholarships which all students can apply to where nationality is not taken into account.

Since the DAAD offers about 100 different scholarship programs for internationals who want to study or research in Germany, it can be challenging to find the right scholarship. This large number is due to the fact that the scholarship programs may vary for certain criteria, e.g.

  • Country:  for all countries - only for specific countries.
  • Level:  Bachelor - Master - Ph.D. - PostDoc - Professors.
  • Subjects:  for all disciplines (e.g. “Study Scholarships - Master Studies for All Academic Disciplines”) - only for specific disciplines.
  • Duration:  from short terms (e.g. summer/winter courses) to several years (e.g. for a full Ph.D.).
  • Intent:  e.g. language learning, internship, study stay, research stay.
  • Language prerequisites:  German skills needed - no German skills need (in English).

The best thing for you to do is to use the Funding Guide to show you how to find the scholarship that suits you best.

Because the DAAD offers so many different types of scholarships for students and researchers, narrowing down the specific scholarships that are applicable to you can be overwhelming. For this reason, we have listed some easy to follow steps below on how to search for your perfect scholarship from DAAD. Additionally, we have chosen one scholarship which is general and applicable to most students and illustrated the important details below.

In the following sections, we’ll guide you through the steps on how to search for a DAAD scholarship that is tailored to you and your goals in coming to Germany. However, please keep in mind that this is a general overview as it is not possible to cover all details (since there are so many scholarships for many different backgrounds). Be sure to use the DAAD as a resource for any doubts you may be having and also visit their regional country pages for more specific information relevant to you.

This is the page for the scholarship database of the DAAD which will connect you to endless funding options (including also non DAAD-scholarships)! We have taken all of the guesswork out of the search process and created this easy-to-follow 5 step guide on how to find DAAD funding, custom to your study needs. Whether you’re interested in an internship, language course, or degree program, the DAAD has funding options for mostly everyone!  Well, what are you waiting for? Go ahead and get started below!

Visit funding-guide.de

The image below is what you should see at the top of your screen. Under the “Refine Your Selection” column on the left of the page, you should have different search criteria as well as a section to type keywords.*

phd daad scholarship 2022

Select your Program: Which applies to you?

This question specifically is asking what your current qualifications are. The categories are undergraduate, graduate, Ph.D., PostDoc, and faculty.

Please note: For many scholarships, you can also apply before the start of the project. For example, Bachelor students can usually apply for a graduate scholarship before the start of the study program. In this case, we recommend trying both filters and reading the respective application requirements carefully.

phd daad scholarship 2022

Country of Origin: where do you (usually) live?

This filter allows you to see funding you qualify for based on where you’re from. Make sure you choose your home country (i.e. where you reside or where your home university is) and not just your nationality. Instead, choose the country where you currently reside if that’s different. For example, a Peruvian student who is fully enrolled in Spain should choose “Spain” as their country of origin.

phd daad scholarship 2022

Intention: What is the funding for?

The DAAD has funding options for graduate studies, internships, language courses, and more! In this section, select the category which most closely fits your funding needs.

phd daad scholarship 2022

Search through your scholarship options!

Once you have found some scholarships tailored to you and your interests or background, you can prepare your application to apply. Each different scholarship may have different application deadlines on when you can apply; some may allow you to apply before you even apply to your study program. Additionally, different scholarships will also have different requirements.

For example, if you are applying for a scholarship targeting artists, musicians, or students with a background in fine arts, you may be required to submit a portfolio or samples of past work. Be sure to keep this in mind when searching through scholarships so that you don’t miss out on an important requirement for your funding.

  • Play with the filters: many scholarship programs allow you to apply before starting your stay in Germany. So if you are a Bachelor's student, you should check the scholarships offered for Master students, too.
  • Plan ahead: as a rule of thumb, you need to apply for DAAD scholarships with at least 6-10 months advance. So we highly recommend you start checking the scholarships early.
  • Don’t use the text search (unless you are experienced): many students might give the search for “Keyword or program title” a first try and end up frustrated quickly as they simply don’t get any results (e.g. if you type in “Humanities” you will see zero scholarship options). So, only experienced users should use the text search.
  • Use the drop-down menus: the DAAD database likes to use drop-down menus. Some application requirements depend on your country of origin. To see what applies to you, be sure to use all drop-down menus throughout the page to select your details to see your respective requirements, deadlines, etc.

“Study Scholarship - Master Studies for All Academic Disciplines” (1-2 years)

phd daad scholarship 2022

To make it easier for you to use the Funding Guide, we would like to introduce you to one of the most popular and attractive scholarship programs. The scholarship we chose to highlight is a general one which is applicable to all graduate students from more than 60 countries and is called the Master Studies for All Academic Disciplines Scholarship . Take a look below:

Master Studies for All Academic Disciplines Scholarship (click here)

The study scholarship for Master Studies for All Academic Disciplines above is just one of many scholarships that the DAAD offers. Whether you are interested in coming to Germany for a graduate, Ph.D., or Post-Doc program, there is a funding option available for you. Furthermore, the DAAD not only offers scholarships for study programs but also has other funding for research projects, language courses, or summer programs.

The best thing you can do is to make sure that you search and apply for your funding early and contact the DAAD directly should you have any questions regarding your application. The next time someone says that there is no funding for international students in Germany, tell them about DAAD and know that there is funding for everyone who applies!

You can pursue doctoral research in Germany with this scholarship

DAAD Scholarships

Great news for doctoral students looking to pursue their postgraduate research in Germany: applications for the 2022 DAAD Scholarships are open.

As part of the  DAAD Graduate School Scholarship Programme , the United Nations University’s Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources ( UNU-FLORES ) is offering a doctoral research opportunity for international graduate students to conduct research under one of three topic areas with the guidance of supervisors from UNU-FLORES and Technische Universitaet Dresden (TU Dresden).

Other fully-funded DAAD Scholarships for the academic year 2022-23 include the MA Sustainable Development Management at HS Rhein-Waal, MSc Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design – IUSD at University of Stuttgart, MSc Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) at TH Köln/ German Jordanian University, and MSc Landscape Ecology and Nature Conservation – LENC at Universität Greifswald.

Since 1925, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), an association of German institutions of higher education and their student bodies, has supported more than 2.6 million academics in Germany and abroad. In 2021, it provided academic and research funding to more than 134,900 Germans and foreigners. This funding is primarily awarded to graduates, doctoral students and postdocs to study at universities and non-university research institutions in Germany.

The DAAD scholarships are similar to those offered by The Fulbright Foreign Student Programme, which enables graduate students to study at US universities for one year or longer. Both programmes boast famous recipients. DAAD alumni include author Margaret Atwood and film director Jim Jarmusch, while Fulbright scholars include Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus and Prime Minister of Belgium Alexander de Croo.

UNU DAAD Scholarships 2022: Important things to know

Available research projects.

Research projects under the DAAD Scholarship programme aim to facilitate UNU FLORES’s mission to resolve a global environmental issue: tackling sustainable use and integrated management of environmental resources in developing and emerging economies.

The first research project assesses the complexity and challenges facing food systems in rural agricultural areas affected by climate change. Students will develop and test a decision support framework to evaluate the sustainability of water reuse and biodiversity to reduce food provisioning risk.

The second research project will analyse the environmental, socio-economic and governance implications of the coal phaseout in Columbia. From this analysis, graduate students will contribute to discussions on energy transition and regional development strategies, and adapt them to the requirements of specific coal regions.

Lastly, the third project will focus on the water-soil-atmosphere nexus in rain-fed and irrigation farming within arid regions — a term to characterise areas with a severe lack of available water. The project will investigate spatial patterns of rainfall and groundwater-based irrigation in arid regions using remote sensing.

The DAAD Scholarships will pay a monthly stipend of 1,200 euros for the duration of the doctoral research. As a baseline, graduate students will be under a one-year agreement with UNU FLORES. You can renew this agreement depending on your work performance and the completion of specific milestones. The combined duration shall not exceed four years.

While the doctoral programme is free, a semester fee of approximately 250 to 300 euros  must be paid directly to TU Dresden for enrolment. The DAAD  can also provide health insurance and introductory German classes, notes its website. If you are a DAAD scholar, you will be enrolled as a student based in Dresden, Germany.

DAAD Scholarships

Applications for the DAAD scholarships will close on July 10, 2022. Source: Issoud Sanogo/AFP

Eligibility requirements

All the research projects require graduate students to have a master’s degree with at least a grade 2.5 or equivalent according to the German system in a field related to the research project.

Graduate students should have strong theoretical and practical knowledge of the research area they plan to undertake. In some projects, specific technical knowledge will be mandatory. Applications for the DAAD Scholarships will close on July 10, 2022. Click here for application details.

Starting your doctoral studies is a big step in your academic life. Along with identifying your research area you also have to plan where and in which institute you want to pursue your PhD.

Where does research take place in Germany?

Contemplating pursuing a PhD in Germany?  There are a number of universities, research institutions and business houses that will welcome you. So getting an insight into the research landscape of the country is of paramount importance!

Research is extensively carried out by and through universities, research organisations and the industry. These three are famously known as the three pillars of research in Germany.

You can take a closer look at this on  Research in Germany .

Which universities should I look at for PhD?

There are various kinds of institutions of higher education in Germany. A majority of these belong to either of the following categories:

phd daad scholarship 2022

Universities and Universities of Technology (TU), are research-oriented and offer a wide variety of subjects. These are the only establishments that can award a PhD degree.

In case you are carrying out your PhD at a research organisation/ University of Applied Sciences, it will always be through a partner university/TU that you will get your degree. Therefore it is important that you fulfill the eligibility criteria of the university/TU as well.

Before you finalise a university or a research institution make sure to check out their websites to know what kind of research is already going on there.

Which is the best university in Germany?

There is no “best university”, neither in one subject and certainly not across all subjects.

phd daad scholarship 2022

DAAD India © CHE Ranking

Germany offers a multidimensional ranking, considering various criteria that are important from a student’s perspective. For example, student and staff judgments on quality of teaching, atmosphere at the university, library and other equipment, student numbers, average study duration, number of graduations, third party funding etc. This way you get a detailed picture of the strengths and weaknesses of each university on university-ranking.de . Here you can find your programme by selecting a subject, a university or even a city in Germany!

As a researcher you should also take the research rankings  into consideration. The criteria for such rankings could be research infrastructure, citations, patents, publications and student reviews, to name a few.

How should I plan my doctorate?

If you have set your mind on a PhD in Germany, you can consider two approaches: the traditional approach i.e. individual doctorate and the structured doctoral programmes.

phd daad scholarship 2022

Individual doctoral studies involve identifying a supervisor ( Doktorvater / Doktormutter ) at a German university who is willing to guide your research. This system offers a lot of freedom, and calls for a great deal of personal initiative right from identifying a topic in your research field. This kind of doctorate takes about 3-5 years to complete.

Structured PhD programmes  are internationally oriented, conducted largely in English and are comparable to PhD programmes offered in English-speaking countries. Here supervision is carried out by several university teachers. These programmes lead to a PhD in about three years.

What if I want to do a part of my PhD research in Germany?

The research Grant: Bi-nationally Supervised Doctoral Degrees / Cotutelle which is also famously known as DAAD Sandwich Scholarship lets you complete your PhD in two countries. The first country being your home country where you are registered as a doctoral student and the second country is but naturally Germany.

You are supervised at your home university as well as at the host institute in Germany. Your doctoral degree is awarded by the home institution. This is the well known “sandwich model”.

While generally as a Master degree holder you will have ticked off the first major requirement, it is always a good idea to check if the university’s requirements and your qualifications match. And then you can start with the application procedure.

Am I eligible to apply for a PhD?

In Germany, every university is autonomous. This means that every university/ study programme has its own set of criteria for admitting students. So please check the university website, and specifically the programme you are interested in. Here you will find the exact admission requirements.

However, some generalisation is  possible. As a Master degree holder from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal or Sri Lanka your degree is treated at par with a German Master degree. In some cases, further assessment of eligibility will be required. Do clarify the matter of eligibility with the university or the research organisation of your choice before you send in your application.

Some universities may ask for the proof of your English language proficiency in form of TOEFL or IELTS scores. Some universities may ask for good German language skills depending upon subject of your research. In such cases, your knowledge of German needs to be certified through examinations like the TestDaF  or DSH.

How do I go about applying for a PhD?

  • PhD Germany   – A portal where German universities advertise openings for doctoral positions
  • An interactive database of  Graduate Schools at German universities
  • Research Training Groups  coordinated by the German Research Foundation (DFG)
  • International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS) Academicians from your country who have collaborations with German academicians or your seniors who might be carrying out research in Germany can be a great source of information too!
  • Contact and convince a supervisor. Make sure that you approach a potential supervisor the right way and in good time – a brief and well-structured communication with an overview of your research proposal and relevant information about yourself is more likely to get you the right kind of response than a simple email stating that you are interested in doing a PhD!
  • Communicate information about your background, academic performance and academic goals.
  • Get a letter of acceptance from your supervisor.
  • Identify a programme. Contact the selected university. This will be your most important source of information as far as exact details about eligibility, programme structure, fee, application procedure etc. are concerned.
  • Check the application deadline for the programme chosen!
  • Application forms and other relevant material can be downloaded from the respective university website.
  • Send the application packet.
  • Get a confirmation of admission.
  • The Admission procedures vary for different universities and for different programmes.
  • Check about these with the university of your choice or your supervisor.
  • Make sure you have a valid passport!
  • Apply for a student visa as soon as you have the admission letter, as the procedure can take 8 to 12 weeks. The German Embassy and the Consulates require proof of funding for the first year of studies. At this stage make sure if you need to get the APS certificate ( www.aps-india.de ) that some universities/host professors may insist upon. To find out where you should apply for a visa, visit the website of the Germany Embassy in your country.
  • Apply for a place in a hostel. In some cases the International Office ( Akademisches Auslandsamt ) of the university will help you.
  • Arrive in Germany at least a week before your course begins.
  • Contact the International Office ( Akademisches Auslandsamt ) of your university for guidance.
  • Step 6 Get your residence permit within the first three months of your stay in Germany from the Foreigners’ Registration Office ( Ausländeramt ).

Germany offers education in German as well as in English. Different subject fields can have different language requirements.

Can I do my PhD completely in English medium?

Germany offers close to 200 structured international programmes with English as the sole or primary medium of instruction. These programmes are called International Programmes.

Few of these programmes may require students to have learnt/learn some German language during their PhD.

Must I learn German for my PhD?

As you have already seen, Germany offers numerous PhD programmes with English as the sole or primary medium of instruction and the language for your thesis. English is also accepted as a language of research and education in Germany.

However, some universities/ subject fields may expect you to have German language proficiency for your PhD.

As a student in Germany, your life will not be limited to the university campus. You will surely want to interact with people, travel through the country-side and make the best of your time there. This is where knowledge of German will present a great advantage!

Universities offer beginner and well as advanced level courses where you can learn German. You can also start learning the language while you are still in your home country at a  Goethe-Institut (Max Mueller Bhavan) / Goethe-Zentrum.

Do I require to learn German for DAAD scholarship?

To apply for the DAAD PhD scholarship knowledge of the German language is not mandatory. However, after getting the scholarship you will be expected to complete a DAAD sponsored German course. This will help you with your life Germany.

While in a foreign country being able to manage your finances on your own is very important. You would need to plan your budget by keeping your living expenses, travel costs and tuition fees if any in mind.

What kind of budget should I have in my mind?

Fees: As a PhD scholar in Germany, you are exempted from tuition fees. You will need to pay a semester contribution of around Euro 300, depending upon the university and the services or benefits provided.

Living costs : Apart from the tuition fees, if any,  you will require about EUR 934 per month for subsistence i.e. housing, food, clothing, study material and other expenses such as health insurance and leisure activities. The precise split up for this amount will be updated soon. The amounts can vary from city to city, and of course from lifestyle to lifestyle!

The following table shows the split up at the time of the last budget indicated in 2019.

How can I finance my doctorate?

If you are participating in a structured doctoral programme and doing your doctorate at a graduate school, research centre or research training group, the issue of funding is usually resolved with you either working as a research assistant or receiving a scholarship of about EUR 1,000 per month.

If you are pursuing your doctorate on the basis of the traditional approach, you can apply for a job as a research assistant, if there is vacancy.

Working as a research/doctoral assistant involves collaboration in research/teaching and doing administrative work in addition to completing the dissertation. Non-university research institutions like Fraunhofer Institutes and also some companies offer doctoral candidates employment and / or fund their doctoral dissertations.

The DAAD offers the most extensive scholarship programme.  Also a number of foundations support international candidates approved for the doctoral process. A database of scholarships offered by various German organisations can be found at  www.funding-guide.de .

What is a DAAD PhD scholarship like and how can I apply for it?

Students going for shorter durations will need a Schengen visa, DAAD noted

The DAAD said it awarded scholarships to 287 Indians, 10 Sri Lankans, nine Bangladeshis, eight Nepalese students and two to those from Bhutan.

The scholarships will be applicable for various uses, including university summer courses; working internships in science and engineering; EPOS – development-related postgraduate courses; public policy and good governance; graduate school scholarship programs and research stays.

It will also apply, the organisation confirmed, to reinvitation and bilateral exchange of academics.

“While university summer courses, WISE, research stays, reinvitation, and bilateral exchange will be for shorter durations between three weeks to three months; EPOS, PPGG, and GSSP cater to full degree programs at the masters or PhD level,” Aditi Gosavi – senior advisor for comms at DAAD India – detailed, speaking to The PIE News .

She noted that students going for shorter durations will need a Schengen visa.

The scholarship awardees for DAAD flagship programs such as PhD, PhD Sandwich and IIT Master Sandwich programs, are yet to be announced.

The DAAD has already concluded its scholarship hand-over ceremonies in Sri Lanka and India.

“DAAD programs such as university summer courses are offered at various German universities where the DAAD facilitates participation of selected students by taking care of fees, living costs, insurance, and travel,” added Gosavi.

“For programs such as WISE [and] research stays, the applicants need an invitation letter from a German academic or researcher, and a good research proposal. Upon selection, the DAAD takes care of their living costs, insurance, and travel.”

In recent years, Germany has increasingly shifted its focus towards South Asia as a source of international students and professionals, with countries such as India now representing the largest student cohort in the country.

“DAAD programs such as university summer courses are offered at various German universities”

Over 43,000 Indian students study in Germany, highlighting a shift from traditional study destinations such as the UK, Canada, and Australia.

Moreover, Germany has also been looking to make its labour market attractive for Indians, as previously reported by The PIE.

The Comprehensive Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement was  signed between India and Germany in December 2022, to encourage the citizens of each country to study, work or do research in the other nation.

Record number of ASU students selected for prestigious DAAD-RISE program

34 will participate in summer research internships in germany.

The Lorraine Frank Office of National Scholarships Advisement has announced that a record-high 34 Arizona State University students have been selected for the prestigious DAAD-RISE award in 2024, significantly exceeding the university’s 18 winners in 2023 and 13 in 2022.

The 2024 ASU awardees represent a wide range of STEM majors, including aerospace engineering, biochemistry, bioscience, biomedical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering and neuroscience.

Twenty-six of the winners are in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, eight are in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and one is in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts. Twenty-one are in Barrett, The Honors College.

Sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service , the DAAD-RISE program offers summer research internships in Germany for undergraduate students from North America, Great Britain and Ireland. In their internships, students assist doctoral students and researchers on projects that match their skills and interests. About 300 scholarships are available each year. This year’s ASU cohort will begin their internships in mid-May.

“This cycle, ASU broke records for both the number of applications submitted and the number of applications awarded. Through partnerships with the School of International Letters and Cultures, Fulton Schools of Engineering and (The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences), we’ve built a culture of applying that extends throughout STEM disciplines across campus,” said Catherine Salgado, program manager in the Office of National Scholarships Advisement (ONSA).

Salgado explained that ASU’s success in producing DAAD-RISE awardees is due to its progressive cohort advising model, which allows students to work on their applications in small group settings and attend writing workshops where DAAD-RISE alumni and ONSA advisors provide guidance and feedback.

ONSA also provides support for students who are put on the DAAD-RISE waitlist or who are not selected.

“We host a ‘What’s Next Webinar’ that allows students to reflect on their application as a whole and learn about future fellowship opportunities. Regardless of the result, we want anyone who applies to DAAD-RISE through ASU to feel supported and excited for the next chapter of their journey. Many DAAD-RISE applicants also go on to apply to prestigious upper-division fellowship opportunities, such as the  National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program and Goldwater Scholarship,” Salgado said.

Over the last four cycles, a DAAD-RISE awardee has been selected for the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship, the nation’s top honor for undergraduate STEM majors:  Isabella Huckabee  (2021),  Jasmin Falconer  (2022), Chloe Leff  (2023), Timothy Chase (2024) and Leslie Bustamante Hernandez (2024).

The 2024 DAAD-RISE recipients from ASU, their majors and where in Germany they’ll study are:

  • Arshia Agarwal, junior, computer software, Karlsruhe.
  • Saanvi Agrawal, junior, computer science, Aachen.
  • Brianna Ashcroft, junior, mechanical engineering, Aachen.
  • Leslie Bustamante Hernandez, junior, biochemistry, Berlin.
  • Liam Caldwell, junior, mechanical engineering, Braunschweig.
  • Jared Chiaramonte, junior, computer science, Dortmund.
  • Meaghan D’arcy, junior, biomedical engineering, Heidelberg.
  • Kathryn Dick, junior, bioscience, Freising.
  • Megan Duncan, junior, materials science and engineering, Chemntiz.
  • Kai Goldsmith, junior, applied bioscience, Gottingen.
  • Soham Goel, sophomore, aerospace engineering, Wilhelmshaven.
  • Manas Srinivas Gowda, junior, computer science, Kaiserslautern.
  • Malea Grabow, junior, bioscience, Dortmund.
  • Lily Guerrero, junior, biomedical engineering, Wuppertal.
  • Kanav Gupta, sophomore, computer science, Gütersloh.
  • Matalin Hansen, junior, mechanical engineering, Chemnitz.
  • Ben Hanson, junior, computer science, Konstanz.
  • Ethan Hurt, junior, biomedical engineering, Marburg.
  • Casey Isabelle, junior, biomedical engineering, Kaiserslautern.
  • Diya Jim, junior, computer science, Wuppertal.
  • Lauren Kim, junior, neuroscience, Rostock.
  • Owen Kruger, junior, computer science, Illmenau.
  • Kiersten Lagerhausen, junior, biochemistry, Braunschweig.
  • Frans Emil Malapo, junior, computer science, Zweibrücken.
  • Anistynn Mendez, junior, molecular bioscience, Tuebingen.
  • Nandana Shibu Elizabeth, sophomore, computer science, Zweibrücken.
  • Toller Phipps, junior, electrical engineering, Kaiserslautern.
  • Suraj Puvvadi, junior, biomedical informatics, Juelich.
  • Angie Scanlan, junior, computer science, Aachen.
  • Noah Severinghaus, junior, mechanical engineering, Frankfurt.
  • Joshua Tint, junior, computer science, Munich.
  • Thinh Tran, junior, computer science, Juelich.
  • Albert Vo, junior, computer science, Wuppertal.
  • Arya Yadav, sophomore, computer science, Freiberg.

“I feel very proud that I can represent ASU globally, and I am very excited about all the further research and cultural experiences this opportunity has opened up,” said Owen Kruger, whose research will focus on uncertainty quantification for deep learning.

Kruger said he hopes to gain extensive hands-on research experience and bring what he learns in Germany back to his research at ASU.

“Exploring this new area will grow me as a researcher and help me better identify what area of deep learning research I may want to pursue in the future. I am also hoping that taking home these new skills can provide valuable perspectives to my ongoing research here at ASU, where I work on deep learning applications. Outside of research though, I’m hoping to absorb as much culture as I can while in Germany,” he said.

Lauren Kim will research the extent to which harbor seals are able to differentiate between time intervals and gain hands-on experience in zoological research, sharpening skills she will use in future career endeavors.

“My goals after graduating are to attend veterinary school and then become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine who perhaps does research as well. So I believe working on a research project with harbor seals is ideally suited for these goals. ... In the port city of Rostock, Germany, I will have a unique opportunity to be right by the ocean, learning about the animals that thrive there,” she said.

“Caring for marine mammals in a research setting will add to my knowledge of different animal species, which I can apply in veterinary school and as veterinarian, treating my diverse array of animal patients."

Leslie Bustamante Hernandez said she is “excited, grateful and nervous” about the chance to conduct research abroad. Her project will focus on understanding the interactions between the immune system and the intestinal environment, particularly innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) and their roles in maintaining intestinal health.

“Coming from a family who has never traveled abroad, I am incredibly grateful that I get the opportunity to explore the world for them. Even better with a program that will place me one step ahead of my future goals. It is an honor to be selected and a validation to my commitment in research,” said Bustamante, who hopes in the future to obtain a PhD in immunology and conduct interdisciplinary research.

“Also, participating in international experiences like the DAAD-RISE program will provide me with insights into successful strategies for fostering diversity and inclusion in academia. I will engage with scholars who grew up in different cultures, and network with other scientists with similar interests,” she added.

Salgado encourages students to attend an information session in October and meet with her as soon as possible after the application opens to discuss how DAAD-RISE fits in with their goals and strategize a feasible application timeline.

The next six-week application cycle for the DAAD-RISE will open in November and close in December. Students who are interested in applying can reach out to ONSA at  [email protected]  for further information.
