Essay on Money is Not Everything

Students are often asked to write an essay on Money is Not Everything in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Money is Not Everything

Introduction.

Money is often seen as the key to happiness. However, it’s not everything. There are other aspects of life that money can’t buy.

Importance of Relationships

Money can’t buy genuine relationships. Friends and family are invaluable, their love and support can’t be purchased.

Health and Happiness

Money can’t guarantee health or happiness. Health is a result of good habits, and happiness comes from contentment.

Knowledge and Wisdom

Money can’t buy knowledge or wisdom. These come from experiences and learning.

While money is important, it’s not everything. It’s the simple things in life that truly matter.

250 Words Essay on Money is Not Everything

The age-old saying, “Money is not everything,” is more than just a cliché. It is a profound statement that encapsulates the essence of human existence and the pursuit of happiness.

Money and Materialism

Money, without a doubt, plays a crucial role in our lives. It provides us with the means to afford necessities and luxuries, and it can also facilitate access to opportunities for education and personal growth. However, it is important to understand that money is merely a tool, not an end in itself. The relentless pursuit of wealth often leads to materialism, which can detract from the more meaningful aspects of life such as relationships, experiences, and personal fulfillment.

The Pursuit of Happiness

The concept of happiness is subjective and varies from person to person. For some, it may be associated with financial stability, while for others, it may be rooted in relationships, personal growth, or contributing to the community. The key is to strike a balance between monetary pursuits and other aspects of life that bring happiness and satisfaction.

In conclusion, while money is an essential part of our lives, it does not equate to happiness or success. It is the means, not the end. The true essence of life lies in our experiences, relationships, and the pursuit of personal growth and fulfillment. Therefore, it is essential to remember that money, while important, is not everything.

500 Words Essay on Money is Not Everything

Money, often viewed as the ultimate measure of success, is undeniably a significant aspect of our lives. It is the driving force behind our basic necessities, such as food, shelter, and clothing. However, it is crucial to understand that money is not everything. It is a means to an end, not the end itself. The overemphasis on its importance can lead to a skewed understanding of life, happiness, and fulfillment.

The Illusion of Happiness

The belief that money equates to happiness is a common misconception. It can buy comfort and security, but not happiness or peace of mind. Studies have shown that beyond a certain income level, additional wealth does not significantly increase happiness. This is because happiness is a state of mind that is largely independent of material possessions. Relationships, experiences, and personal growth are often more significant contributors to happiness.

Money and Relationships

Money can also have a profound impact on relationships. Wealth can attract people towards you, but it cannot guarantee genuine relationships. Often, relationships built around money lack depth and sincerity. In contrast, relationships built on mutual respect, love, and shared experiences tend to be more fulfilling and lasting.

Value of Experiences

Experiences, unlike material possessions, are priceless and everlasting. They shape our perspectives, broaden our horizons, and contribute to our personal growth. Money can facilitate experiences, but it cannot replace them. The joy of exploring a new place, the thrill of learning a new skill, or the satisfaction of helping others are experiences that money cannot buy.

Inner Peace and Contentment

Money cannot buy inner peace or contentment. These are achieved through self-acceptance, gratitude, and a sense of purpose in life. People often spend their lives chasing wealth, only to realize that it does not bring the satisfaction they had hoped for. This is because contentment comes from within and is not dependent on external factors like wealth.

In conclusion, while money is important, it is not everything in life. It is a tool that can provide comfort, security, and opportunities, but it does not guarantee happiness, genuine relationships, or inner peace. The pursuit of wealth should not overshadow the pursuit of personal growth, meaningful relationships, and experiences. Recognizing this can lead to a more balanced, fulfilling, and meaningful life.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Can Money Really Buy Happiness?

Money and happiness are related—but not in the way you think..

Updated November 10, 2023 | Reviewed by Chloe Williams

  • More money is linked to increased happiness, some research shows.
  • People who won the lottery have greater life satisfaction, even years later.
  • Wealth is not associated with happiness globally; non-material things are more likely to predict wellbeing.
  • Money, in and of itself, cannot buy happiness, but it can provide a means to the things we value in life.

Money is a big part of our lives, our identities, and perhaps our well-being. Sometimes, it can feel like your happiness hinges on how much cash is in your bank account. Have you ever thought to yourself, “If only I could increase my salary by 12 percent, I’d feel better”? How about, “I wish I had an inheritance. How easier life would be!” I don’t blame you — I’ve had the same thoughts many times.

But what does psychological research say about the age-old question: Can money really buy happiness? Let’s take a brutally honest exploration of how money and happiness are (and aren’t) related. (Spoiler alert: I’ve got bad news, good news, and lots of caveats.)

Higher earners are generally happier

Over 10 years ago, a study based on Gallup Poll data on 1,000 people made a big headline in the news. It found that people with higher incomes report being happier... but only up to an annual income of $75,000 (equivalent to about $90,000 today). After this point, a high emotional well-being wasn’t directly correlated to more money. This seemed to show that once a persons’ basic (and some “advanced”) needs are comfortably met, more money isn’t necessary for well-being.

But a new 2021 study of over one million participants found that there’s no such thing as an inflection point where more money doesn’t equal more happiness, at least not up to an annual salary of $500,000. In this study, participants’ well-being was measured in more detail. Instead of being asked to remember how well they felt in the past week, month, or year, they were asked how they felt right now in the moment. And based on this real-time assessment, very high earners were feeling great.

Similarly, a Swedish study on lottery winners found that even after years, people who won the lottery had greater life satisfaction, mental health, and were more prepared to face misfortune like divorce , illness, and being alone than regular folks who didn’t win the lottery. It’s almost as if having a pile of money made those things less difficult to cope with for the winners.

Evaluative vs. experienced well-being

At this point, it's important to suss out what researchers actually mean by "happiness." There are two major types of well-being psychologists measure: evaluative and experienced. Evaluative well-being refers to your answer to, “How do you think your life is going?” It’s what you think about your life. Experienced well-being, however, is your answer to, “What emotions are you feeling from day to day, and in what proportions?” It is your actual experience of positive and negative emotions.

In both of these studies — the one that found the happiness curve to flatten after $75,000 and the one that didn't — the researchers were focusing on experienced well-being. That means there's a disagreement in the research about whether day-to-day experiences of positive emotions really increase with higher and higher incomes, without limit. Which study is more accurate? Well, the 2021 study surveyed many more people, so it has the advantage of being more representative. However, there is a big caveat...

Material wealth is not associated with happiness everywhere in the world

If you’re not a very high earner, you may be feeling a bit irritated right now. How unfair that the rest of us can’t even comfort ourselves with the idea that millionaires must be sad in their giant mansions!

But not so fast.

Yes, in the large million-person study, experienced well-being (aka, happiness) did continually increase with higher income. But this study only included people in the United States. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that our culture is quite materialistic, more so than other countries, and income level plays a huge role in our lifestyle.

Another study of Mayan people in a poor, rural region of Yucatan, Mexico, did not find the level of wealth to be related to happiness, which the participants had high levels of overall. Separately, a Gallup World Poll study of people from many countries and cultures also found that, although higher income was associated with higher life evaluation, it was non-material things that predicted experienced well-being (e.g., learning, autonomy, respect, social support).

Earned wealth generates more happiness than inherited wealth

More good news: For those of us with really big dreams of “making it” and striking it rich through talent and hard work, know that the actual process of reaching your dream will not only bring you cash but also happiness. A study of ultra-rich millionaires (net worth of at least $8,000,000) found that those who earned their wealth through work and effort got more of a happiness boost from their money than those who inherited it. So keep dreaming big and reaching for your entrepreneurial goals … as long as you’re not sacrificing your actual well-being in the pursuit.

money is not important essay

There are different types of happiness, and wealth is better for some than others

We’ve been talking about “happiness” as if it’s one big thing. But happiness actually has many different components and flavors. Think about all the positive emotions you’ve felt — can we break them down into more specifics? How about:

  • Contentment
  • Gratefulness

...and that's just a short list.

It turns out that wealth may be associated with some of these categories of “happiness,” specifically self-focused positive emotions such as pride and contentment, whereas less wealthy people have more other-focused positive emotions like love and compassion.

In fact, in the Swedish lottery winners study, people’s feelings about their social well-being (with friends, family, neighbors, and society) were no different between lottery winners and regular people.

Money is a means to the things we value, not happiness itself

One major difference between lottery winners and non-winners, it turns out, is that lottery winners have more spare time. This is the thing that really makes me envious , and I would hypothesize that this is the main reason why lottery winners are more satisfied with their life.

Consider this simply: If we had the financial security to spend time on things we enjoy and value, instead of feeling pressured to generate income all the time, why wouldn’t we be happier?

This is good news. It’s a reminder that money, in and of itself, cannot literally buy happiness. It can buy time and peace of mind. It can buy security and aesthetic experiences, and the ability to be generous to your family and friends. It makes room for other things that are important in life.

In fact, the researchers in that lottery winner study used statistical approaches to benchmark how much happiness winning $100,000 brings in the short-term (less than one year) and long-term (more than five years) compared to other major life events. For better or worse, getting married and having a baby each give a bigger short-term happiness boost than winning money, but in the long run, all three of these events have the same impact.

What does this mean? We make of our wealth and our life what we will. This is especially true for the vast majority of the world made up of people struggling to meet basic needs and to rise out of insecurity. We’ve learned that being rich can boost your life satisfaction and make it easier to have positive emotions, so it’s certainly worth your effort to set goals, work hard, and move towards financial health.

But getting rich is not the only way to be happy. You can still earn health, compassion, community, love, pride, connectedness, and so much more, even if you don’t have a lot of zeros in your bank account. After all, the original definition of “wealth” referred to a person’s holistic wellness in life, which means we all have the potential to be wealthy... in body, mind, and soul.

Essays About Money: Top 5 Examples and 6 Prompts

With money comes great power; however, power must always come with responsibility. Discover thought-provoking essays about money in our guide.

Money is everywhere. We use it to eat, drink, clothe ourselves, and get shelter, among many other uses. Nowadays, it is an undisputed fact that “money makes the world go round.” The earliest known form of money dates back to around 5,000 years ago ; trade was previously carried out using a barter system. However, over the centuries, more and more nations began implementing a currency system, and money has become more critical.

In the contemporary world, it seems to be “all about money.” However, it is important not to lose sight of what is important; we must maintain good physical and mental health and healthy relationships with the people around us. Money is necessary; it is just not the only thing necessary. To start your essay, read these examples to write insightful essays about money.

5 Top Examples On Essay About Money

1. essay on money by prasanna, 2. how money changed human history by jacob wilkins, 3. capitalism: money that make money by ernestine montgomery, 4.  is money the most important thing by seth higgins.

  • 5. An Introduction to Saving Money by Jeremy Vohwinkle

Writing Prompts For Essays About Money

1. good uses for money, 2. the “dark side” of money, 3. money’s role in history, 4. morality vs. money, 5. can money buy happiness, 6. how to save money.

“Imagine the world without money. We will eventually come to a point where we will be asking questions like “what’s the point of life”. Hope and goals are some of the important things that will keep a man going in life. Without any sense of achievement or motivation, there wouldn’t be any inventions or progress in the world. People work to get money and then people work harder to get more money. This cycle of life that keeps a man motivated and hopeful is one of the biggest advantages of the system of money”

This essay gives readers a general outlook on money and its advantages and disadvantages. It gives people equal opportunity to work for their dreams and motivates them to be productive members of society, while it also raises the question of greed. Money, without a doubt, has its positive and negative aspects, but it exists and is only becoming more critical.

“But the barter economy was flawed. There was no universal measure for determining the value of an item. It was all based on the subjective opinion of the individuals involved. And to make matters worse, the barter economy relied on both sides wanting something the other had to offer. Trade, therefore, could be sluggish and frustrating. Human beings needed something different, and money was the answer.”

Wilkins writes about how money revolutionized the way trade was conducted. The barter system involved trading any objects if both parties agreed to a deal, such as trading animal skins for fish or medicine for timber. However, the only measure of an item’s value was how much one party wanted it- both sides needed to have something the other wanted. The introduction of money allowed people to put a solid value on commodities, making trade easier.

“So, if you were to closely observe the dirty, disordered canvas of economic progress during the 20th and 21 st century, you should conclude that, for all its warts, capitalism has been the winner. It has sometimes caused pain; suffered from serious cycles; and often needed the clout of the state- such as we have seen from September 2008. It has also been quite resistant to sensible regulation. Even so, the basic institutions of capitalism have worked, not just in the US and the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and development) nations, but also many developing countries, of which India is one.”

Albeit lengthy, Montgomery’s essay discusses the debate between socialism and capitalism, a topic of which money is at the core. Montgomery describes Karl Marx’s criticism of capitalism: all the money goes to a few people, not the workers. She believes these are valid to an extent and criticizes certain forms of capitalism and socialism. Neither capitalism nor socialism is perfect, but according to Montgomery, capitalism creates a better economy.

“Being the richest man in the world does not mean you are the happiest man in the world, although money can buy you happiness sometimes, but not always. If we could all appreciate the way life is, the fun, and the beauty I think the world would be better. If people weren’t power hungry maybe we’d have a lesser demand for money. Those people who is money hungry and power hungry need to relax. Money can’t buy you happiness. These individuals need to understand that.”

Higgins implores readers to remember that money is not the only thing people need in the world. He stresses the necessity of money, as it is used to pay for various necessary goods and services; however, he believes it is not a prerequisite for happiness. Material things are temporary, and there are other things we should focus on, like family and friends.

5. An Introduction to Saving Money by Jeremy Vohwinkle

“A financial emergency may take the form of a job loss, significant medical or dental expense, unexpected home or auto repairs, a hurricane or major storm, or something unthinkable, such as a global pandemic. The last thing you want to do is to rely on credit cards with their hefty interest fees or to be forced to take out a loan. That’s where your emergency fund can come in handy. Historically, the formula for an emergency account is to have enough readily available cash to cover three to six months of living expenses.“

Vohwinkle’s essay gives readers some suggestions on how to save more money. Most importantly, he suggests setting up an emergency fund, as all other saving techniques stem from there. He also suggests creating an automatic savings plan and cutting down on “spending leaks,” like buying coffee. You might also be interested in these essays about celebration .

In this essay, write about why money is necessary and the ways to use it for the greater good, and include ways in which it can be used (investing, donating, etc.). For each point, you make, be sure to explain why. Of course, this is entirely subjective; feel free to write about what you consider “good uses” for money.

On the other hand, money also has a negative side —research on money-related issues, such as taxpayer-funded corruption and trading of illegal goods. In your essay, explore this side of money and perhaps give solutions on how to stop these problems.

Money has played a progressively more important role throughout human history. Discuss the development of currency and the economy, from the barter system to the digital world we live in today. You need not go too in-depth, as there is a lot of ground to cover and many eras to research. Be sure to cite reputable sources when discussing history.

Many people warn of “selling your soul” for financial gain. In your essay, you can write about the importance of having solid values in this day and age, where money reigns supreme. What principles do you need to keep in mind? Explain how you can still value money while staying grounded; mention the balance between material needs and others.

As stated in Higgins’ essay, more people have begun to prioritize money over all else. Do you believe that money is truly the most important thing? Can it alone make you happy? Discuss both sides of this question and choose your position accordingly. Be sure to provide precise supporting details for a stronger argument.

money is not important essay

How important, if at all, is having more money for our happiness and well-being? Unsurprisingly this question stimulates a lot of opinion and debate. But are people accurate in their predictions about the benefits of having money?

A new study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology highlights that people are often mistaken in how spending our money might benefit our lives. People are prone to forecasting errors – that is, they mistakenly predict future events to be better or worse than they actually turn out to be.

In this latest study the researchers show that people predict that buying material possessions will be a better use of money than spending instead on life experiences. But once the purchases are had, the experience is what’s perceived to have been a better use of money, resulting in higher well-being. More or less, this confirms findings from other studies . And so it seems that a focus on having as opposed to being may limit human potential.

But what does this new study tell us about the importance of money for both happiness and well-being more generally? On the whole money matters much less than people think and has led some to conclude simply that money doesn’t make us happy because we aren’t spending it right .

My own research has also illustrated that we probably don’t spend our money on the things most beneficial for well-being. For example, we have shown that spending on psychological therapy would be an extremely cost-effective way of raising well-being . But, the message from our research is not that we should just spend our money better and that people underestimate the effect of purchasing certain things, as the authors claim in the latest study. Instead, our work highlights just how relatively unimportant money is at raising individual well-being compared to other more important things.

More to life than money

How to spend our money is not the only choice we have – we also have choices as to how we should live our lives and whether in fact we should spend so much time and energy pursuing money in the first place. Thus when we are trying to understand the importance of money for well-being it is one thing to compare types of spending, but really we should be comparing how important money is in relation to other things.

The reality is that how much someone earns contributes very little to their sense of well-being compared with other things such as social relationships, physical and mental health or how a person relates to the world around them. Focusing directly on these factors would probably do much more for our well-being rather than how we chose to spend our money.

We have demonstrated that personality change, for example, contributes substantially more to changes in well-being than income factors . People who, for example, become more open to new experiences or emotionally more stable, are much more likely to experience larger well-being changes than any change to their income.

Being materialistic is well-known to be detrimental to an individual’s well-being. Those that pursue wealth and possessions consistently report lower well-being than those that don’t.

So a better question to address than how we should spend our money is: “Why does more money seem to bring us very little well-being even though we often predict otherwise?”

Money and social standing

One reason is that people don’t care about how much money they have per se, but care more about the social position that their income gives them . But increases in an individual’s income won’t necessarily equate to a growth in social standing. And, while people may think that an income increase will bring greater well-being, this may not factor in that everyone else may experience an income increase at the same time.

It’s also been shown that income losses have a much greater impact on well-being than equivalent income gains . This suggests that any benefit that accrues from an income rise, whether at the individual or national level, may be completely wiped out by much smaller income losses. The importance of income is therefore not in obtaining it, but avoiding losing it. Only once it’s obtained does income become essential to maintain your current level of well-being and this may partly explain why it is believed to be so important for well-being.

The question as to whether more money brings greater happiness comes up time and time again and will no doubt continue to do so. Indeed it is an important question and how we spend our money is of course important – if we have money then of course it makes sense to use it wisely. But it would be a mistake to let the pursuit of money for the sake of happiness distract us away from the things in life that simply matter more.

Money Is Not Everything: Importance of Other Life Factors

  • March 13, 2022
  • Marina Avramovic

Money Is Not Everything

Money is not everything . This may be a difficult thing to accept, especially if you are someone who is always chasing after the almighty dollar. There are many other things in life that are important, and you should never forget that.

In this blog post, we will discuss the importance of other life factors and why they are so important.

Money Makes the World Go Around

People often say that “ money is not everything but everything is money .” And it’s true – in the grand scheme of things, money doesn’t mean all that much. But that doesn’t mean it’s unimportant. In fact, having a lot of money can make a big difference in your life.

Think about what you could do with an extra $1,000 per month. You could afford to pay for a nicer apartment or travel more often with your family. You could even save up for a down payment on a house! Money certainly isn’t everything, but it definitely makes life a lot easier.

Moreover, the results of a new study on money suggest higher earners (that make $75,000 per year) are much happier in their lives.

Does this mean that money should be our number one priority? As mentioned above, being financially stable is important, but to understand the money is not everything meaning , we need to dig much deeper.

The Mythology of Money

In the wealthy vs. rich debate , you might think that being rich is the most crucial thing in the world since it’s often associated with earning a lot of cash and becoming a millionaire. However, this kind of mindset also creates a false perception of what it means to be wealthy.

Enter king Midas. You’ve probably heard the story of King Midas, who was given a unique gift by the god Dionysus. Everything he touches will turn to gold. Sounds like an excellent plan for early retirement, right? Especially when you know that today a ton of gold amounts to a whopping $55,582,130.

But, again, money is not everything in life . While our hero, Midas, became wealthier than ever, he could not eat or drink, and he even turned his precious daughter into a golden statue once he touched her.

The moral of the story? Be careful about what you wish for and understand your intentions before taking (financial) action.

The Scrooge Syndrome

If you’re an avid reader, you’ve probably stumbled upon the money is not everything maxim in a book by Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol .

Here, the main character, Ebenezer Scrooge, neglects everything with his bah-humbug attitude, including his family, in order to accumulate wealth.

I n an alternative future, he dies alone and forgotten.

A Christmas Carol teaches us that our personal growth and being authentic are the things that make us wealthy. This is more important than the size of our annual income .

Changing the Money Paradigm

Money isn’t everything since it can’t buy us the essential things in life: health and love.

Love Doesn’t Cost a Thing

One of the most important things in life is your relationships. Friends and family are the people who will be there for you through thick and thin, and they are worth more than any amount of money.

If you don’t have a strong network of support, then you need to work on building one. Spend time with your friends and family, go out for coffee or dinner, and just enjoy each other’s company.

The First Wealth is Health

To understand the money isn’t everything meaning , we’ll talk about another important area of your life — your health.

True, if you’re rich, you’ll have access to the best dietitians and personal trainers on the planet, but they won’t be able to save you from all the illnesses in the world.

For example, the famous Beatle, George Harrison, lost his battle with cancer, although he had a net worth of $400 million at the time of his death . Not even Steve Jobs could fool death, though that famous speech about the worthlessness of money is not really his .

Money is not everything, Warren Buffett would say, i.e., “Money will not change how healthy you are or how many people love you.”

Strive Not to Be a Success, but Rather to Be of Value

Your personal growth is another area that is important in life. You should always be working on becoming a better person. This means learning new things, challenging yourself, and growing as an individual.

If you don’t work on your personal growth, you will stagnate and never reach your full potential.

You Deserve to Have a Job That Fulfills You

Since it’s tightly linked to our careers and finances, is money everything in our life ? While both are important, they should not be the only things you focus on in life or you may burn out and end up hating going to work .

Make sure that you are taking time to enjoy your hobbies and interests, and do not put all of your eggs in one basket. If you focus too much on your career or finances, you will miss out on other aspects of life.

Moreover, ask yourself, is working at a job that doesn’t fulfill you worth it? Even if you make 60k per year , you’ll never be truly satisfied if your job negatively affects your personal life.

This phrase about money not being everything is cliché for a reason. While money can buy you some happiness, it doesn’t always equate to a good life or a meaningful existence. So what does make us happy?

Things like strong relationships, feeling connected to something bigger than ourselves (like being part of a community), and having a purpose in life.

What does money is not everything mean?

This maxim suggests that no matter how much money you have in your bank account, this doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll lead a happy and fulfilling life. As you can see from our post, money can’t buy you love, friends, or health.

In other words, money doesn’t define you. It’s simply one of the means to reach financial security.

Why money isn’t the most important thing in life?

Money is an integral part of our lives, but it’s not the most important thing. There are many other factors that are just as — or even more — important.

Some people might think that having a lot of money means you’re successful, but that’s not always the case. Many wealthy people are unhappy.

So what are the most important things in life? Here are just a few: happiness, family and friends, health, and passion.

Who said money is not everything ?

Many famous people quoted this maxim, like the American professional baseball pitcher, Earl Wilson, and actress Zsa Zsa Gábor. However, one person made this term more popular than ever.

That person is Warren Buffett, an American investor, philanthropist, business magnate, and the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway. Buffett is one of the most successful investors and the eighth-wealthiest person in the world. His net worth amounts to more than $114 billion.

He said that money is not everything and that one saying the opposite had better first earned a lot of money in order to give such a statement.

Money Won’t Make Your Life Meaningful

  • John Coleman

money is not important essay

Develop a purpose-driven relationship with personal finance.

A recent poll showed that Americans now value money more than patriotism, religion, community, or children. In fact, 69% of Gen Zs believe “money can buy happiness.” But as ever, money won’t make us fully happy. In fact, an improper relationship with money, one of attachment without enjoyment, can deeply handicap a person’s attempt to live a deep, meaningful human life. To flourish and craft lives of purpose, and develop a proper relationship with and attitude toward money, individuals should follow the following principles:

  • Relegate money to its proper place. Money can be a great tool, but it’s not a goal in and of itself.
  • Invest your money for impact.
  • Choose to spend your money on experiences, not objects.
  • Use your income to help others.
  • Choose a job that you find meaning in, so you’re earning with purpose.
  • Save for the freedom to work how and when you want as you age, not retirement.

What does money mean to you?

Money Is Important But It Is Not Everything It When Comes to Well-Being

Money is important but is it everything? Does money buy happiness? These questions come up frequently but what are the answers? A daily survey in 2010 of 1,000 US residents conducted by the Gallup Organization showed that emotional well-being improved with raising income but this relationship diminished and plateau with further increasing of income beyond a ‘satiation point.’ At the time of the study was reported, the satiation point where no further improvement of emotional well-being with increasing income was around $75,000. Participants’ daily emotional well-being (hedonic well-being or experienced happiness) was measured by answered to questions about emotional experiences the previous day (frequency and intensity of experiences of joy, fascination, anxiety, sadness, anger, stress, worry, affection that make one’s life pleasant or unpleasant) . The study also measured participants’ life satisfaction by having participants answer questions on their thoughts or evaluation about their daily life in a scale from 0 to 10. Interestingly at the same time period, participants’ income ‘satiation point’ where raising income further no longer changed participants’ life satisfaction was higher at around $120,000. This study pointed out that money is important but it is not everything when comes to well-being.

Every individual and family are not created equal. This study indirectly indicates the importance of lifestyle medicine. Happiness is not only limited to hedonia but also eudaimonia. Adhering to lifestyle medicine pillars guides us towards our overall well-being!

Why Money Is Important And The Role It Plays in Our Lives

Todd Kunsman Avatar

By Todd Kunsman

Financial Independence

Published on May-17-2021

Updated on Apr-11-2022

At some point, you may wonder why money is important and start to analyze the role it plays in your own life.

And our society has plenty of different viewpoints when it comes to money and happiness, how much money is truly enough, and how to better with money.

I’m sure you have heard many of the different sayings about money too, whether funny or to hit a particular point to make you think.

You know the ones, like:

  • “Money doesn’t buy happiness.” – Proverb
  • “Money is the root of all evil.” – 1 Timothy 6:10
  • “Having money isn’t everything, not having it is.”  – Kanye West

But you’ve probably heard many proverbs, famous quotes, or other sayings from people around you. And while there may be some truth to not let money dictate your entire life and choices, money IS important.

Why Is Money So Important?

The reason money is so important is that it provides options for you to live a better life that you choose and puts you in control. Having money and being comfortable with finances also gives you freedom and options to decide how you want to live and support the things you care most about in your life.

And yes, it’s true that money cannot necessarily buy you complete happiness forever and greed can make people do terrible things. Look what the hunger for more wealth and money did to Bernie Madoff and how he ruined the many families who invested with him.

But while there is truth to some of the negative connotations to money, ultimately you have the strength to dictate how you use money and if you let it control you.

Money is not everything in this world, but it can be powerful in helping you achieve your goals and let you make the best of the short life we all have.

The Real Benefits of Money

While your whole life does not need to focus on money and accumulating wealth , it is still important to dedicate your time to understanding it and building a strategy.

Look, we all know that more money means you can generally afford a fancier lifestyle, bigger homes, better vacations, and flashier cars. But those material items are not the real benefits of having money and the temporary excitement from those items quickly wanes.

So why is money important?

Money Gives Your Freedom

Money is important because it gives you the freedom to do what you want, when you want, where you want. Sometimes we call this “ FU Money ,” which means you reach a point where you can just walk away from a job you hate and are not reliant on anyone’s financial support.

Do you have hobbies you want to pursue? A dream to start your own business? Money gives you the freedom to explore those areas and take a bit of risk.

Money Gives You Options

Being able to make choices and have options is one of the best feelings in the world. Knowing you are stuck in a particular situation because you need the money or financial help is frustrating, so removing that from your life is a great relief.

When you have money, you control what you want or don’t want to do. Want to have a different career? Want to move to a different state or country? Want to travel somewhere new for vacation? Do it.

Money Creates Financial Security

One of the most powerful feelings you can have is knowing you do not need to worry about money.  Financial stress is a common problem among people and families, which can lift a huge burden.

Whether you lose your job or some economical turmoil happens, you aren’t worried about paying bills, paying to see a doctor for medical reasons, or wondering where your next meal will come from.

Having money and having a financial plan creates more security for you and your family.

Money Can Create More Life Experiences

Life is short and goes by fast, which means you should want to experience the best things life has to offer while you are here.

Hoarding money and never experiencing anything is a waste, afterall you can’t take the money with you to the grave! While that might not paint a pretty picture, it’s completely true.

When you have money, it creates opportunities for you to get more out of life, travel the world, try new things, and get out of your own bubble of where you live. This can also help drive more happiness overall as you are experiencing more that life has to offer.

Money Helps You Give Your Family More

While generational wealth can be a good thing, there is a fine line of instilling in your children good values and work ethic beyond just handing money over to them.

But money matters because you can provide your family with better education opportunities, better healthcare, and a better start in life overall.

There are plenty of children that become spoiled and it creates unrealistic expectations of money while growing up. But that’s where teaching them about money and not giving them every little luxury without hard work will be key.

Money Lets You Give Back

At some point, you may reach a level of income or financial freedom where you can afford to give back. Helping out charities, your local community, or other causes is a great feeling and it can create happiness when you are helping others.

Yes, there are also some tax incentives when you donate to charities, but hopefully, that would not be your main driver to give back.

Those are some of the main reasons money is important and should be things you think about in your own pursuit of financial independence. But I’m sure there are other reasons money might be important to you as well.

The Negative Side of Money

While there are plenty of benefits to having money, there are negatives to it as well. Focusing your energy on making money, saving, and investing is important but it’s a careful balance to not let it consume every little decision you make.

Obsessing Over Money Causes Problems

While we may all strive for money or financial peace, obsessing over money and making money can really cause problems in your life.

When you focus all your time on money and trying to acquire more of it, you can end up destroying your relationships with family and friends. It can also lead you down a path of unethical behavior (see once again, Bernie Madoff) or criminal activities just to get more money.

Having an obsession with money is a destructive disorder that can ruin your life and others. Sure, you may have all the money in the world, but if you trampled over everyone, who is going to be next to you enjoying life? No one or not anyone that you would trust to genuinely care about you and not your wealth.

Making Money Can Cause More Stress

Not only can money help reduce financial stress, but it can also cause more unwanted stress too. Funny how that works, ain’t it?

For those where money is never enough, no matter how much they have — it actually can create more stress.

You find yourself working crazy hours every week, spending every waking moment thinking about money, and even getting anxious over your efforts for more. That stress not only takes a toll on your mental and physical health but affects those around your like family and co-workers.

Can Create More Family Disagreements

In a MarketWatch article , they mentioned that TD Ameritrade found that 41% of divorced Gen Xers and 29% of Boomers say they ended their marriage due to disagreements about money.

While these numbers are just a few years old, money continues to be a common cause for disagreements and arguments among spouses and families.

If you are not on the same page with your spouse or family, money will certainly be a common friction point. And you certainly won’t be in agreement ALL the time, but having similar values and thoughts about money can limit the disagreements.

How Much Money Is Enough?

As you can see from above, there is nothing wrong with the pursuit of financial independence and money. But there can be downsides as well.

The issue begins when you let greed consume you and find yourself doing whatever it takes to make more money. This is when you start to hurt people, alienate friends and family, and end up in a self-destructive path.

The question you have to truly ask yourself is how much money is enough?

For many looking to pursue financial freedom , that number of how much is enough comes to 25x of yearly expenses. So say your expenses are $30,000 per year, you’d ideally want to have $750,000 saved and invested.

This is the best baseline when evaluating why money is important to you and how much should be enough. It’s a good goal and amount where you can live happily and be comfortable in life.

For some people, that 25x goal seems like more than enough, not everyone needs to be like Warren Buffett or the next Jeff Bezos. And for others, they would never be satisfied with that amount.

Happiness fades after a certain amount

It’s a great idea to have a budget, financial goals, and maybe a net worth number you are striving to achieve. That’s never a bad thing!

But often it’s easy to get into a whirlwind of bad spending habits or needing more and more, never being satisfied with what you have.

In a fascinating research topic, High income improves evaluation of life but not emotional well-being by Daniel Kahneman and Angus Deaton, the authors explore the impact of money on your overall well-being.

Essentially, the key findings from their research were that money can keep increasing satisfaction up to any amount, but money only has an affect on your overall happiness up to an annual income of $75,000.

While the research goes much more in-depth and is from 2010, something to keep in mind as you pursue money and think about your finances.

Final Thoughts

Health and family are some of the most important things in life. If you have those two things, then you are living a pretty rich life. But there is no denying the importance of money and that it can create better life opportunities.

Naturally, money won’t solve all your problems and if you were an unhappy person prior to money, then gaining some wealth may only be a temporary solution.

The real opportunity is to find the right balance where you see money as important, but a tool that can help you create better life experiences and opportunities.

Money is not the most important thing in life. What is your opinion

money is not important essay

Why Money Matters?

Money makes your life comfortable, money can buy you health, money creates more opportunities for you, money can help others, money gives you time, freedom and mobility, money gives you education, why love is important, love allows you to connect with others, love is the source of energy and motivation, love makes you healthy and happy, love makes you kind, love leads you to self-discovery, so is love or money more important, money is a tool, love can make you rich.

In this article, you are going to discover which is more important to you in life, is it love? Or is it money?

For those who think that money is more important than love, they believe so because they believe that money is the glue that keeps the couple together. Without money, they cannot buy the house to move in together. Without money, they cannot watch movies in theatres and go for a date night. Without money, they cannot plan for having babies and building a happy family.

Now, what about love? Isn’t that love is the most important since money can’t buy love? Without love, everything you do seems meaningless. Without love, you will live empty inside. Without love, you will feel like you are incomplete. More importantly, there will be no one there to celebrate with you even if you are rich and have all the money in the world, so does this make love the more important than money?

In order to find out the real answer to the question, whether money or love is more important, you must delve deeper into each component and how money and love affect your life.

First, let us look at money. Why do you think money is important? Well, this is a no-brainer question. People used the money to buy things every day. You use the money to pay your bills, you use the money to buy foods, and you use the money to buy a house or to pay the rent in order to put a roof over your head. So money is truly important. Without money, people cannot survive comfortably.

Money dictates the flow of human living, especially in this modern world. When you don’t have any money, life will often be painful and difficult. Money creates the freedom to you. If you have seen people who are in serious debt and are chasing for money to make ends meet, you will understand that money is important.

Money is a non-negotiable and an indispensable commodity in every person’s life. Do you know that the possession of money means it is a resource and the usage of money can create other resources too? Everything that we use in our daily lives has monetary value, be it directly or indirectly.

With money, you can often buy whatever things you want in your life. In other words, money makes your life comfortable. When you have enough money, you can spend money on necessities like food and groceries.

And when you have more money, you can then spend them on luxury items like a bigger house, a sports car, or even use it for charity. You can donate and help others who are in need. Money is a tool that when used correctly, it will create more good than evil.

You need money to buy and put food on the table. Without money, life cannot go far. Your relationship can suffer and what if you have a family to feed? Therefore, money is important because it provides the basic necessities to survive. More importantly, when you have a lot of money, it makes your life comfortable.

Yes, this is true, money can buy you health. You can maintain your health even though you cannot rule your health. With modern healthcare to increase human longevity, money can help you improve your health and live a healthy lifestyle.

For example, you can spend money on a proper and healthy diet, you can buy nutrition and supplements, you can work out in the gym, and when you are sick, you can get proper medication.

Plus, if you have the money, you can make an appointment with your doctor for a regular checkup. This way, you can prevent serious illnesses rather than having to cure them when you are already infected.

A lot of people did not go for medical and health checkups because they do not have enough money to pay for the healthcare bills. And this becomes even more obvious these days because the cost of medical checkups has been increasing drastically over the years.

Do you know that money can create an opportunity for you? When you are rich and you have the money, you can buy a house that is up for sale and priced under the market. When you have the money, you can invest and build businesses, create more jobs and develop values for the community.

Without money, things will be more difficult. For example, when you saw a house up for sale that is priced below market and you know that this is an absolutely good deal, how can you afford to buy the house when you have no money?

This does not mean that you cannot buy the house and secure the deal, it simply means that without money, things will not be as direct and you need to find other ways to solve the problem. On the contrary, if you have the money, you can buy the house and secure the deal right away, without having to borrow or find ways to make it work.

Hence, money creates opportunities for you. You can invest the money and make businesses flourish. Or you can just give the money to your children so that they do not have to start from zero. Nobody wants to see their children going through a tough start. And money can give you, your family, your lover and the community security.

This is also the main reason why the rich able to get richer. When the rich have money, they are presented with more opportunities to grow and achieve more.

When you see someone who needs monetary aid, will you help? Well, if you have money, then you can choose to help as you like. However, what if you do not have any extra to help?

This is why money can help others and make the world a better place. In 2010, the world’s richest men, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett announced a campaign to encourage wealthy people to contribute a majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes, and they called their campaign, The Giving Pledge.

As of 2017, there are 158 wealthy people have signed the pledge including the Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg, and their pledges total to over $365 billion. And this act of kindness has created values, help, and saves a lot of lives around the world.

Thus, money can help others. Not only that money is important in enriching your life, but it can enrich other people’s lives too.

Money can buy you time. You don’t have to trade your time for money. This is exactly what most people are doing because they stuck in a job and if they don’t work, they don’t have the money. It is an endless loop.

At the same time, money gives you freedom too. You have the freedom to choose what to eat, what to buy, which house to stay, and what car to drive. Without money, your choice will be limited. If you don’t have money, you cannot spend on luxury items, hence, your freedom is limited.

Another important reason why money is important is that money builds your school and money sends you there for education. People who are in poverty do not have a better chance to get into a better school or access to higher education.

Furthermore, when you have excess money to spend, you can buy books, attend additional classes like a seminar or a workshop, pay to learn how to cook, how to invest, or how to do things better.

Love can be described as a feeling, an emotion, and also a way of life. The majority of people will think that love is the most important thing that is in life. While there are many facets and faces of love, you are going to discover how love is important and how it can affect your life here.

This may seem like common sense, but it is and will always be the key to the functioning of society as a whole. As human beings, you possessed the ability to have an intimate connection and affectionate with another person.

Nobody can escape from the feeling of love. Feelings and emotions are built in within our biological system, there is no way anyone can escape the feeling of affection and love. It allows you to build an intimate relationship with others, it makes you feel complete, and to a certain extent, it is why people live in this world.

There are plenty of cases whereby people can do something extraordinary and sacrifice without requesting anything in return for the people that they love. This simply shows that love is the most important thing in life, and not money.

When you are in love with what you do and you are passionate, you will strive better and to perform better. This is also to say that people who are in love of their work, their career, their family, their partners, etc, tend to do better in life.

People who have a family and love their family will want to do better to provide their family with a better quality of living. People who are in love will want to perform better for their partner too. Plus, if you are in love with your work and you are passionate about it, you will do your best to deliver extraordinary results.

In fact, love is the thing that created success, and hence, money. Love makes you complete and performs better. When you perform better, you become more successful. When you are successful, you get paid higher or you earn a better income, and you have more money.

When you are in love, you feel inspired. It gives you a can-do attitude and you look at the world in a positive perspective. Love gives you motivation and you can tap into this energy source to achieve greater heights in life.

Studies after studies have proved that when people are feeling loved and grateful, their overall well-being will improve and are less likely to fall sick. When you are feeling loved, your biological system works better to improve your immunity.

Besides that, love can make you feel happy. And there are many benefits one can get from feeling happy. This is why love is the ultimate feeling that everyone is pursuing. There is no way you can live in this world alone. You will feel empty and live in depression.

Humans are creatures who desire to live in groups. Since Stone Age, humans have gathered together and lived in groups. You simply cannot live by yourself. You need to depend on others and get the support from other people to live and to thrive.

We all know that the desire to love and care for others is a hard-wired and deep-seated because the fulfillment of this desire enhances our happiness levels.

In other words, when we feel loved, we are more willing to help others. And when we help others, we make ourselves feel better.

There is a study conducted where participants were either given $5 or $20 as part of the experiment. Participants are then asked to either spend the money on themselves or on others. Those who spent the money on others experienced a higher level of happiness than those who spent the money on themselves.

What is more interesting is that the amount of money spent on others did not make a difference to the happiness level. Meaning to say, those who spent $5 on others derived just as much happiness as those who spent $20.

This is why when you are feeling loved, you will be more likely to give a helping hand to those who are in need.

Love can reveal a lot about ourselves that we may not have already known. This is because when you are in love with others, you reveal a lot about your tastes, preferences, morality, habits, and reactions to the other person. As a result, this also allows you to better understand yourself.

Furthermore, love also makes you a better version of yourself. When you are in love, you will be nice to everyone, you will appreciate everything that is happening in your life, and you will be more willing to help.

Apart from that, your loves will make you fearless. The things that you fear will disappear when you are in love. You know you have your own personal cheerleader in your corner to help you with whatever is needed. If you are in a happy relationship, you know that your partner is always there to support you. You will feel great when you are home or be with your lover despite going through a tough day.

By now, you should understand that both money and love are important in life. After you have read through the information given above, you should know that love and money have their own functions in life and why we need both in order to thrive.

Perhaps, we should love and money like our hands and our legs. Do you think that your legs are more important? Or your hands are more important?

Probably, both hands and legs are important and you definitely do not want to lose any of them. The same can be said for love and money. Both can be important in their own way to make our life work.

Money should not be the main objective of your relationship. And financial success usually comes as a result of a partnership that works, from love. That is why it is important to have both money and love. And you need to learn how to make both works for you in life.

Every time you do something for the sole reason of earning money, you will feel empty inside. And every time you do not have money, you will feel depressed and life can be tough. Money is not the objective of a relationship, but often, money will affect the relationship in its own way.

Always remember that money is a tool. Without money, you will miss out a lot of opportunities and you will lose your freedom to make things happen.

On the other hand, with money, you can help people and make your dreams a reality. Want to travel the world? With money, you can easily make this dream come true. Thus, money is a tool. You must learn how to use this tool wisely.

Instead of letting money to control your life and your relationship, learn to make it work. Learn to control your money and grow it. Money is responsible for the creation of innovative products and companies. Money is required to help and feed those who are in need.

And please understand that money is not evil, but greed is. The money will not turn you into a bad guy. The money will only reveal more of who you already are.

For example, if a kind-hearted person becomes rich, he will do more good, donate to charity and help those who are in need. Oppositely, if a bad person becomes rich, he will use the money to fulfill all his bad ideas.

Therefore, money is neither good nor bad. Money is just a tool that can help you realize your inner desire.

And when you learn to master money and learn to grow it, you will become rich beyond your wildest dreams.

You have heard countless of times that success gurus and people who have accomplished extraordinary results in life always mentioned that love and passion are important.

Steve Jobs has a great commencement speech at Harvard University, he said:

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

Everything starts from love. If you want to accomplish great success in life, learn to love yourself, your work, and the people around you. As what you have already learned from above when you are in love, you will be happier and are able to perform better result.

And when you perform better in life, you will achieve more. When you achieve more, you will earn more and as a result, you will have more money. This is why love is important and it can make you rich.

Remember, this is not to say that money is not important or people can only achieve greatness with love. It is possible to achieve greatness without love, but in the end, you will feel empty inside and there is no one to share your success.

Love is a support structure for you to build your ship on. Whatever future you desire, methods you want to follow or wherever you see yourself going, you know that you will have someone who believes in you, trust you, and wants to see you succeed.

This is an important feeling and this emotion can catapult your life to a higher level. This is also why you need to find love in your life and in everything that you do.

Again, both love and money are important because they are different things that will make your life worth living.

Learn to love and be loved so that you can turn the inspiration into energy that drives you to success. At the same time, learn to use money as a tool to achieve your dreams and enrich your loves.

Money or Education, Which is more Important? (Debate): So, which is more valuable: education or money? Which one should we concentrate on? This appears to be a simple question, but when we think about it, the answer is not that straightforward. Money and education are inextricably linked in our daily lives. On the one hand, money is what drives the majority of our lives.

We have to think about money in practically every decision we make. Education, on the other hand, cannot be overlooked since it provides us with the fundamental tools we require to live. Let’s weigh in on their relative importance and see if we can finally settle this age-old argument.

Why Money is Important

Money is commonly said to be “ not the most important thing in the world.” However, for many individuals, it is right up there with oxygen in terms of significance. These aren’t necessarily materialistic individuals. They just recognize the genuine worth of money.

Essay about Money is more Important than Education

Money isn’t exciting on its own. What matters is what money can accomplish for you. You have more flexibility and options when you have money. When you have a strong salary or financial resources, you have the freedom to choose where and how you wish to live. When you don’t have much money, on the other hand, making choices may be something you can’t afford. In actuality, the choices available to you may not be choices at all.

Undoubtedly, you’ll require money to meet your fundamental needs, which include food, clothes, and shelter. Because of a lack of funds, a poor individual is frequently forced to make compromises even on essential basic requirements. Moreover, medical expenditures nowadays consume a person’s whole life savings. Furthermore, one must have money to obtain an education, as the cost of school is quite expensive these days and is not likely to decrease anytime soon.

While money cannot purchase happiness, it may give you independence, stability, and the ability to follow your aspirations. As a result, money is unquestionably necessary for every excellent thing that provides us financial satisfaction.

Why Education is Important

Today, education is more vital than ever before, and it has reached new heights as people have a better knowledge of what it comprises. If you ask yourself, “Why is education important?” your response will almost certainly not be the same as everyone else’s. While having a college degree is tremendously important for a successful profession and is socially acceptable in today’s culture, it is not the sole source of education. In everything we do, education is all around us.

Money is better than knowledge

Education may help you become the greatest, most complete version of yourself by allowing you to learn about what interests you, what you’re excellent at, and how to become self-aware and aware of the world around you. It can assist you in finding your position in the world and making you feel whole. Basic life skills and street smarts are built on the foundation of education. While education may appear to be a technical phrase, it refers to all we learn in life on how to live our lives to the fullest. When it comes to being creative in any manner, shape, or form, the mind can only achieve its full potential if it’s given the tools to think outside the box.

Education gives you a sense of stability in life, which no one can ever take away. You boost your prospects of greater professional options and create new doors for yourself by being well-educated. Education gives financial security in addition to stability, which is very important in today’s culture. An excellent education is more likely to lead to a higher-paying career and provide you with the necessary skills. It might provide you with the freedom to make your own decisions as well as be financially independent. Education has the potential to be the most liberating and empowering thing in the world.

Money vs Education, Which is More Important

Money is required for basic expenses, but that is not the only requirement. Money helps us reach our objectives and support the things we care about most, such as family, education, health care, charity, adventure, enjoyment, and so on. It assists us in obtaining some of life’s intangibles, such as freedom or independence, as well as the opportunity to maximize our abilities and talents. It allows us to chart our path in life. It ensures financial safety. Much good may be accomplished with money, and unnecessary suffering can be prevented or eliminated.

Education, on the other hand, is essential for survival. Everyone needs education at some point in their lives to improve their knowledge, manner of life, and social and financial standing. Although it may not provide you with financial standing in society, a literate mind will undoubtedly set you apart. Education is amazing in that it is not restricted by age.

While money gives us the ability to make a difference in our own lives and the lives of others, it is impossible to obtain an education without it. The cost of education is quite expensive these days, and it will continue to rise in the near future. Education may be too expensive, particularly at private institutions and universities. While you don’t have to pay back your student loans until after you graduate, the payment will ultimately come due. Without funding, education would come to a halt.

In a different light, money may be able to buy what you “ desire ,” but education helps you to realize what you “need” to live a better life. This is demonstrated by the numerous non-monetary advantages that may be obtained via education. Money may allow us to have more control over our lives, but it is education that allows us to contribute to society.  Although money is useful, an educated individual understands how to make money in the first place. Education has the potential to open up job opportunities.

With an education, you have the potential to earn more money than others who do not. Obtaining a degree might expand your options in some professions, allowing you to make more money. Many employers provide educational incentives to their workers. Anyone who stays up with current trends will always be able to make more money. If you are well educated, your chances of living in poverty are lower.

Furthermore, you cannot lose or be stripped of your education. Whatever happens, the lessons you’ve learned will be with you. Even if you lose a wonderful job, your degree and experience will assist you in finding work in the future. When a financial catastrophe strikes, you can’t lose what you’ve learned. Even if you become indebted due to unforeseen circumstances, your education will not be taken away from you.

Nevertheless, much of the narrative about the benefits of going to college and having a degree is centred around the concept that if you have a degree, you’ll be able to make more money. For many people, education is only a means to an end, which is monetary gain.

Some believe, however, that if generating money is your primary incentive for pursuing a profession, you might explore trade schools and other qualifications that may help you earn a fair living. After all, while many people dismiss trade skills such as plumbing and electrical labour, these individuals may amass money more quickly than their more educated counterparts. We frequently read about people who have amassed enormous wealth while having had very little formal education. In fact, having a degree does not ensure that you will earn more since many people without a degree make more money than graduates.

Regardless, education will assist you in developing a decent character, a noble personality, and, above all, will help you become a better person. You will not only be able to make money with education, but you will also be able to efficiently use the money you have made to benefit yourself and others. Money is a slippery slope, but those who figure out what they genuinely value and match their money with those beliefs have the most financial and personal well-being. Education is necessary to become such a person. Never forget that knowledge is power.

Sample Essay

Many people think that money is essential, and I concede to this thought. Money has always been necessary to the nurturance and flourishing of a person, which has only grown with time. This essay will expedite how money and happiness are intertwined, though not completely dependent.

An adage goes, “Happiness comes from within.” It is true because people can find happiness in the harshest of circumstances. People, rich and poor alike, smile and dream of enjoying life. In some cases, the rich are more stressed than those hustling at multiple jobs just so their families can afford two square meals a day. One can derive happiness from the minor things, like being handed over a chocolate bar. Such a notion signifies independence from external factors controlling your emotions, like money.

But, one cannot, and should not, deny that money eases a lot of things. Money effectively gives you room to smile. Yes, happiness is not a definite by-product of money, but it certainly helps. I’d like to use another saying to support this, “Money is like the sixth sense – it allows you to enjoy the other five.” With money, you can buy good food, good clothes, good shoes. With funds, you can purchase the gaming console that helps you connect with your friends for a light-hearted battle, which brings a smile to your face. With capital, you can move to the apartment you have always admired.

All in all, money and happiness are indeed entwined, as finances give us the luxury to buy into our material pleasures of life. But, happiness is not entirely dependent on money.

Essay on “Money Is Not Everything” Complete English Essay, Paragraph, Speech for Class 10, 12 Students.

Money Is Not Everything

money is not important essay

Money is essential that brings for man all his necessities and luxuries for his comfortable existence. Life without money is undoubtedly a virtual hell, with pangs of hunger and thirst eating into man’s very bones. However, at the same time for man to think that money is everything, is also a great mistake Money is a necessity only in as much as, it is the thing which buys us all we need, but, beyond that, money is a harbinger of all sorts of vices. Let us remember that money is to be considered as a means to an end, and not an end in itself. The end is a comfortable life, and the means is money.

If we consider money as a means to our end of having a comfortable life then, we would be seeing money in its proper perspective for without money we cannot live as we are not able to buy anything if we do not have money. So much, so good but, in the present day scenario, money is no more a means to an end but, an end in itself. To collect money. to hoard money and become richer and richer has become our sole aim in life. It is here in our outlook towards money that we have erred, and so the disastrous situation we are placed in is not hidden from anyone. Each individual has set a goal of hoarding money and money only, and this also not fixed to a certain amount, we just have to go on and on irrespective of how much we need, for the lust for money has become our very style of life. It is a wild goose chase that we are all indulging in, and that, at the cost of all the rest we had.

True, money gives us all that we require but money is not the only thing that we need to keep happy and fit. There are several other things that make life beautiful and mind that these cannot be purchased with any amount of money. For example, a gush of wind from where we take our very breath of life, cannot be purchased at any cost. We can wear the most glamorous dresses but, to give health to that same body, no amount of money is enough. We can buy the thickest and costliest of mattresses with money but, no amount of money can buy for us a good sound, night’s sleep. These few facts are sufficient to awake us to the fact that, there are many other important things that make for a happy life, and money is not all. We should thereby give money only its due importance and not make it all-important for, if we do that, we are certainly going to sacrifice some other vital items of a good life. Now let us analyze to some extent how this money is capable of playing havoc in life.

In reality, the position of society today is far from being enviable, is largely due to this money mania that has caught hold of society. Each and every individual is busy in his/her money-spinning activities. At this juncture, I would like to mention the fact that in our Hindu mythology, the Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth has an owl for her transport. This is very significant as it is believed that the pursuit of money, as it is today, makes an owl of a man. I’d say that we have all become money maniacs, sacrificing every conceivable pleasure on the altar of wealth. Is this not owlish sense? When we lose our equilibrium, we become significant owls.

Today, we have sacrificed the bliss of a happy and contented family in the guise of material luxuries which we think are all that we need. We have no time to love each other, care for each other or, serve each other in the family because each member of the family is busy in the struggle of making money. In this unit of a family, where, at one time the love we got was an elixir for our tired nerves, is now a missing entity.

On the other hand, now, we have plush carpets, foam on our beds, and a beautiful dining table with, no one at home to share our joys and worries. This is what money has done to our family’s succor. The parents are busy making money and have no time, to spare for the children, the husband is busy buying diamonds for his wife, but has no time even to take a glance at her when she dons them. The wife is busy preparing the office routine but has no time for the routine service of the family. So, in this avenue of life, money has done more harm than good. In as much as money was essential to buy for a man his necessities and to some extent even his luxuries, it was good but, as soon as it became the be-all and end-all of life, it wreaked havoc in life.

On the social front also, no one has any time to be even aware of about the welfare of the neighbours and colleagues, as, each one is busy not only spinning money but, spinning money more than the neighbour. When such an unhealthy competition exists for the hoarding of money, where then will a society exist at all. Where no one knows anything about anyone, no does anyone care to know anything about anyone, then, where does society exist? The society has been blown up into fragments, with each family of the society only busy raising bank balances more than the neighbour’s.

It is this money and the lust for it that has afflicted uncounted miseries on man. All the competition that persists today is only to rise above the others not in any other way than just the other’s bank balances. Man has become so very deprived in this chase of money that he can do, and he also does anything; yes anything to get hold of money. Is this what money was meant for? Family squabbles, social bickering, political gains are all managed for the sake of this money. This is why today; no one understands any language, except the language of money. For the money, people have killed children or even adults are kidnapped. It is for this money the modern sophisticated man has become a little less than a beast.

After having a bird’s eye view of the present scenario are we still in a position to say that money is all that we need? Yes, money is all-important but, only to a limit. Once the limit of satisfaction is crossed it converts man into a mere animal, a brute, and a devil. It is this excess of money that leads man to all sorts of crimes. We should realize that money is not all that we need for happiness, for, I daresay, the opposite is correct — and all the unhappiness spread in the world today is the obvious corollary of excess money in circulation, and the lust for it. The unhappiness and crime registered in these days of lots of money surpass the unhappiness of many times before this. In spite of so much progress and prosperity, why is there so much ill will, degradation, and unhappiness? It is I think because we are laying too much stress on money and only money. The fact of rampant unhappiness goes to prove that, money is not all that we need to live, for, it is by now apparent that, to be happy, we need so many other things, which money cannot even buy for us. Now, the position is that, we have sacrificed all the finer needs of our happiness for this mundane money and the result is obvious and for all of us to see, and understand.

I suggest that a stage has now come when we must give up our on fighting for money and give it only the amount of respect and importance it deserves, it should be treated only as a means to an end, and not an end itself, only then we will be able to strike a balance between the inputs of money and the inputs of other things we need to live a happy and satisfying life.

Gender pay gap in U.S. hasn’t changed much in two decades

The gender gap in pay has remained relatively stable in the United States over the past 20 years or so. In 2022, women earned an average of 82% of what men earned, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of median hourly earnings of both full- and part-time workers. These results are similar to where the pay gap stood in 2002, when women earned 80% as much as men.

A chart showing that the Gender pay gap in the U.S. has not closed in recent years, but is narrower among young workers

As has long been the case, the wage gap is smaller for workers ages 25 to 34 than for all workers 16 and older. In 2022, women ages 25 to 34 earned an average of 92 cents for every dollar earned by a man in the same age group – an 8-cent gap. By comparison, the gender pay gap among workers of all ages that year was 18 cents.

While the gender pay gap has not changed much in the last two decades, it has narrowed considerably when looking at the longer term, both among all workers ages 16 and older and among those ages 25 to 34. The estimated 18-cent gender pay gap among all workers in 2022 was down from 35 cents in 1982. And the 8-cent gap among workers ages 25 to 34 in 2022 was down from a 26-cent gap four decades earlier.

The gender pay gap measures the difference in median hourly earnings between men and women who work full or part time in the United States. Pew Research Center’s estimate of the pay gap is based on an analysis of Current Population Survey (CPS) monthly outgoing rotation group files ( IPUMS ) from January 1982 to December 2022, combined to create annual files. To understand how we calculate the gender pay gap, read our 2013 post, “How Pew Research Center measured the gender pay gap.”

The COVID-19 outbreak affected data collection efforts by the U.S. government in its surveys, especially in 2020 and 2021, limiting in-person data collection and affecting response rates. It is possible that some measures of economic outcomes and how they vary across demographic groups are affected by these changes in data collection.

In addition to findings about the gender wage gap, this analysis includes information from a Pew Research Center survey about the perceived reasons for the pay gap, as well as the pressures and career goals of U.S. men and women. The survey was conducted among 5,098 adults and includes a subset of questions asked only for 2,048 adults who are employed part time or full time, from Oct. 10-16, 2022. Everyone who took part is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATP’s methodology .

Here are the questions used in this analysis, along with responses, and its methodology .

The  U.S. Census Bureau has also analyzed the gender pay gap, though its analysis looks only at full-time workers (as opposed to full- and part-time workers). In 2021, full-time, year-round working women earned 84% of what their male counterparts earned, on average, according to the Census Bureau’s most recent analysis.

Much of the gender pay gap has been explained by measurable factors such as educational attainment, occupational segregation and work experience. The narrowing of the gap over the long term is attributable in large part to gains women have made in each of these dimensions.

Related: The Enduring Grip of the Gender Pay Gap

Even though women have increased their presence in higher-paying jobs traditionally dominated by men, such as professional and managerial positions, women as a whole continue to be overrepresented in lower-paying occupations relative to their share of the workforce. This may contribute to gender differences in pay.

Other factors that are difficult to measure, including gender discrimination, may also contribute to the ongoing wage discrepancy.

Perceived reasons for the gender wage gap

A bar chart showing that Half of U.S. adults say women being treated differently by employers is a major reason for the gender wage gap

When asked about the factors that may play a role in the gender wage gap, half of U.S. adults point to women being treated differently by employers as a major reason, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in October 2022. Smaller shares point to women making different choices about how to balance work and family (42%) and working in jobs that pay less (34%).

There are some notable differences between men and women in views of what’s behind the gender wage gap. Women are much more likely than men (61% vs. 37%) to say a major reason for the gap is that employers treat women differently. And while 45% of women say a major factor is that women make different choices about how to balance work and family, men are slightly less likely to hold that view (40% say this).

Parents with children younger than 18 in the household are more likely than those who don’t have young kids at home (48% vs. 40%) to say a major reason for the pay gap is the choices that women make about how to balance family and work. On this question, differences by parental status are evident among both men and women.

Views about reasons for the gender wage gap also differ by party. About two-thirds of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (68%) say a major factor behind wage differences is that employers treat women differently, but far fewer Republicans and Republican leaners (30%) say the same. Conversely, Republicans are more likely than Democrats to say women’s choices about how to balance family and work (50% vs. 36%) and their tendency to work in jobs that pay less (39% vs. 30%) are major reasons why women earn less than men.

Democratic and Republican women are more likely than their male counterparts in the same party to say a major reason for the gender wage gap is that employers treat women differently. About three-quarters of Democratic women (76%) say this, compared with 59% of Democratic men. And while 43% of Republican women say unequal treatment by employers is a major reason for the gender wage gap, just 18% of GOP men share that view.

Pressures facing working women and men

Family caregiving responsibilities bring different pressures for working women and men, and research has shown that being a mother can reduce women’s earnings , while fatherhood can increase men’s earnings .

A chart showing that about two-thirds of U.S. working mothers feel a great deal of pressure to focus on responsibilities at home

Employed women and men are about equally likely to say they feel a great deal of pressure to support their family financially and to be successful in their jobs and careers, according to the Center’s October survey. But women, and particularly working mothers, are more likely than men to say they feel a great deal of pressure to focus on responsibilities at home.

About half of employed women (48%) report feeling a great deal of pressure to focus on their responsibilities at home, compared with 35% of employed men. Among working mothers with children younger than 18 in the household, two-thirds (67%) say the same, compared with 45% of working dads.

When it comes to supporting their family financially, similar shares of working moms and dads (57% vs. 62%) report they feel a great deal of pressure, but this is driven mainly by the large share of unmarried working mothers who say they feel a great deal of pressure in this regard (77%). Among those who are married, working dads are far more likely than working moms (60% vs. 43%) to say they feel a great deal of pressure to support their family financially. (There were not enough unmarried working fathers in the sample to analyze separately.)

About four-in-ten working parents say they feel a great deal of pressure to be successful at their job or career. These findings don’t differ by gender.

Gender differences in job roles, aspirations

A bar chart showing that women in the U.S. are more likely than men to say they're not the boss at their job - and don't want to be in the future

Overall, a quarter of employed U.S. adults say they are currently the boss or one of the top managers where they work, according to the Center’s survey. Another 33% say they are not currently the boss but would like to be in the future, while 41% are not and do not aspire to be the boss or one of the top managers.

Men are more likely than women to be a boss or a top manager where they work (28% vs. 21%). This is especially the case among employed fathers, 35% of whom say they are the boss or one of the top managers where they work. (The varying attitudes between fathers and men without children at least partly reflect differences in marital status and educational attainment between the two groups.)

In addition to being less likely than men to say they are currently the boss or a top manager at work, women are also more likely to say they wouldn’t want to be in this type of position in the future. More than four-in-ten employed women (46%) say this, compared with 37% of men. Similar shares of men (35%) and women (31%) say they are not currently the boss but would like to be one day. These patterns are similar among parents.

Note: This is an update of a post originally published on March 22, 2019. Anna Brown and former Pew Research Center writer/editor Amanda Barroso contributed to an earlier version of this analysis. Here are the questions used in this analysis, along with responses, and its methodology .

Can Trump Get a Jury Who Will Give Him a Fair Shake? My Expert Opinion Is Yes, and Here’s Why.

A photo of chairs in a courtroom jury box.

By Julie Blackman

Dr. Blackman is a social psychologist who has worked as a jury consultant on many well-known criminal cases, including those of Leona Helmsley, Martha Stewart, Sheldon Silver and Robert Menendez.

If Donald Trump has been clear about anything, it is this: “I cannot get a fair trial in New York.”

By New York, he means Manhattan, where he won slightly less than 10 percent of the vote in 2016 and about 12 percent in 2020 and where, as one of his lawyers argued last week, “In terms of prejudicial pretrial publicity in this county, this case stands alone.”

Of course, Mr. Trump doesn’t want a fair trial. Like any other criminal defendant, he wants a jury that is biased in his favor. But can he get a jury that is able and willing to give him a fair shake?

My answer, based on my more than 40 years as a jury consultant for politicians, celebrities, Wall Street financiers and others accused of criminal wrongdoing, is that he can. Granted, Mr. Trump is as high-profile and polarizing as a defendant can be. But the adversarial nature of the selection process and the remarkable can-do attitude that jurors so often display result in a fair jury almost always.

For Mr. Trump, we’re about to find out. Jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday in the hush-money trial brought by Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney. Mr. Trump faces 34 felony charges related to what prosecutors say was a scheme to pay hush money to a porn star to cover up a sex scandal as he was running for president in 2016. He will become the first former president to go on trial on felony criminal charges.

For all of the media attention that has focused on this case and the others Mr. Trump has faced and is facing, in my experience, well-instructed juries have shown time and again that they can put aside what they have learned outside the courtroom and focus on the evidence presented inside the courtroom. What is likely to unfold in the trial will undoubtedly absorb the jurors’ full attention. Having sworn to the court that they will shelve their preconceptions, the jurors are likely to focus on the evidence and follow it to where it leads. Our brains tend to focus on what’s in front of us, and the evidence in this case surely will be compelling for the jurors.

That said, Mr. Trump might prove to be his greatest enemy. Several studies have raised concerns about jurors turning to the internet for case-relevant information while serving on juries, even though they had been instructed not to consider outside information. This might present a challenge for Mr. Trump if he continues to salt the internet with invective. Even so, a carefully instructed jury should be able to sideline his vitriol in favor of the evidence.

Jurors who will sit in judgment of Mr. Trump will have survived what is likely to be a long selection process intended to root out potential bias. They will fill out detailed questionnaires and may be questioned in court by the judge and the lawyers for both sides to elaborate on their written responses. Jurors who cannot be fair will be dismissed by the judge. Days or even weeks could pass before enough jurors are deemed impartial and selected. Additionally, the defense and prosecution each will be able to reject 10 more potential jurors for any reason except for a juror’s race, gender or other similar identifying characteristic.

This extensive process of inquiry was cited by a federal district judge in a 1989 decision rejecting an effort by Leona Helmsley , the billionaire hotelier, to move her tax evasion trial out of Manhattan. She became widely mocked in headlines in New York papers as the “Queen of Mean.”

But Judge John Walker of the Federal District Court in Manhattan wrote in an opinion ruling on her motion that “after reading more than 100 comprehensive juror questionnaires, and after spending more than three days carefully interviewing more than 100 jurors individually, this court has no hesitation in answering that ‘fundamental question’: A fair and impartial jury can indeed be obtained in this case.”

I was the jury consultant on that case. Mrs. Helmsley was convicted. I thought she got a fair trial despite her reputation outside the courtroom.

The 12 jurors and six alternates who survive this interrogative process in the Trump hush-money case will swear to follow the law as it is explained to them by the judge, whether or not they think it is a good law. This is the definition of fairness in the courtroom.

The linchpin of this proceeding will be the judge overseeing the trial, Juan M. Merchan, who has spent 17 years on the bench and was described as a “no-nonsense, drama-averse jurist” in a recent profile in this paper.

How he manages the trial will be instrumental to its fairness. Justice Merchan has already agreed to Mr. Bragg’s request to withhold the names of jurors from the public. He can tell prospective jurors: “I have decided that your names will not be known to the public to help you to feel safer and more free to be fair.” This decision should go a long way to reassuring prospective jurors that they will be protected from harassment or attempts at tampering. (Lawyers in the case will know the identities of the prospective jurors, however, and no doubt will be looking into their backgrounds.)

I also worked on the obstruction-of-justice case against the entrepreneur and television personality Martha Stewart in 2004 arising from initial allegations of insider trading. In the jury selection process, Judge Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum of the Federal District Court in Manhattan barred reporters, courtroom artists and others from attending sessions at which prospective jurors were questioned by lawyers. She said that having outsiders present might prevent prospective jurors “from giving full and frank answers to questions posed to them” and noted that “without such candor on the part of prospective jurors, there is a substantial risk that defendants’ absolute right to a fair trial and an impartial jury will be impaired.”

Ms. Stewart, too, was convicted, and I think she also received a fair trial, though questions were raised about the veracity of one of the jurors. Do jurors lie when questioned by the judge or lawyers? In my experience, based primarily on postverdict investigations, most do not. But one or two bad apples will not spoil the rest. Juries are better than the sum of their parts.

Ultimately, for the jurors, the judge’s words to them will be crucial to their understanding of their role. And from those words, jurors should feel that Justice Merchan understands the difficulties they face in having to put to one side their existing views.

If I were offering him advice in this case, I would suggest that Justice Merchan make two points.

He should emphasize, with a show of empathy, the great importance of fair juries. “Some of you may be thinking, ‘I have strong opinions. I cannot do this.’ Please think carefully about this,” he might tell them. “You cannot stop knowing what you know. But the evidence presented here can and must be at the forefront of your thinking.”

And he should use ennobling words to underscore the significance to the jurors of their role in sitting in judgment of Mr. Trump, whom they must presume is innocent but is charged with criminal wrongdoing.

“No one can do this job better than those of you selected to serve as jurors,” he might tell them. “As citizens of this country, we depend on one another to rise to the challenge of moments like these. We are grateful for the commitment you will apply to achieve fairness. The evidence deserves your open-minded attention. Trial by jury is bedrock to our democracy.”

Medicare's push to improve chronic care attracts businesses, but not many doctors

Medicare enrollees with two or more chronic conditions are eligible for Chronic Care Management, which pays doctors to check in with those patients monthly. But the service hasn't caught on.

Carrie Lester looks forward to the phone call every Thursday from her doctors' medical assistant, who asks how she's doing and if she needs prescription refills. The assistant counsels her on dealing with anxiety and her other health issues.

Lester credits the chats for keeping her out of the hospital and reducing the need for clinic visits to manage chronic conditions including depression, fibromyalgia and hypertension.

"Just knowing someone is going to check on me is comforting," says Lester, 73, who lives with her dogs, Sophie and Dolly, in Independence, Kansas.

At least two-thirds of Medicare enrollees have two or more chronic health conditions, federal data shows . That makes them eligible for a federal program that, since 2015, has rewarded doctors for doing more to manage their health outside office visits.

But while early research found the service, called Chronic Care Management, reduced emergency room and in-patient hospital visits and lowered total health spending, uptake has been sluggish.

Federal data from 2019 shows just 4% of potentially eligible enrollees participated in the program, a figure that appears to have held steady through 2023, according to a Mathematica analysis. About 12,000 physicians billed Medicare under the CCM mantle in 2021, according to the latest Medicare data analyzed by KFF Health News. (The Medicare data includes doctors who have annually billed CCM at least a dozen times.)

By comparison, federal data shows about 1 million providers participate in Medicare.

$62 per patient, per month

Even as the strategy has largely failed to live up to its potential, thousands of physicians have boosted their annual pay by participating, and auxiliary for-profit businesses have sprung up to help doctors take advantage of the program. The federal data showed about 4,500 physicians received at least $100,000 each in CCM pay in 2021.

Through the CCM program, Medicare pays to develop a patient care plan, coordinate treatment with specialists, and regularly check in with beneficiaries. Medicare pays doctors a monthly average of $62 per patient , for 20 minutes of work with each, according to companies in the business.

Without the program, providers often have little incentive to spend time coordinating care because they can't bill Medicare for such services.

Health policy experts say a host of factors limit participation in the program. Chief among them is that it requires both doctors and patients to opt in. Doctors may not have the capacity to regularly monitor patients outside office visits. Some also worry about meeting the strict Medicare documentation requirements for reimbursement and are reluctant to ask patients to join a program that may require a monthly copayment if they don't have a supplemental policy.

"This program had potential to have a big impact," says Kenneth Thorpe , an Emory University health policy expert on chronic diseases. "But I knew it was never going to work from the start because it was put together wrong."

He said most doctor's offices are not set up for monitoring patients at home. "This is very time-intensive and not something physicians are used to doing or have time to do," Thorpe says.

For patients, the CCM program is intended to expand the type of care offered in traditional, fee-for-service Medicare to match benefits that — at least in theory — they may get through Medicare Advantage, which is administered by private insurers.

But the CCM program is open to both Medicare and Medicare Advantage beneficiaries.

The program was also intended to boost pay to primary care doctors and other physicians who are paid significantly less by Medicare than specialists, says Mark Miller, a former executive director of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, which advises Congress. He's currently an executive vice president of Arnold Ventures, a philanthropic organization focused on health policy. (The organization has also provided funding for KFF Health News .)

Not "easy money"

Despite the allure of extra money, some physicians have been put off by the program's upfront costs.

"It may seem like easy money for a physician practice, but it is not," says Dr. Namirah Jamshed, a physician at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

Jamshed says the CCM program was cumbersome to implement because her practice was not used to documenting time spent with patients outside the office, a challenge that included finding a way to integrate the data into electronic health records. Another challenge was hiring staff to handle patient calls before her practice started getting reimbursed by the program.

Only about 10% of the practice's Medicare patients are enrolled in CCM, she says.

Jamshed says her practice has been approached by private companies looking to do the work, but the practice demurred out of concerns about sharing patients' health information and the cost of retaining the companies. Those companies can take more than half of what Medicare pays doctors for their CCM work.

Dr. Jennifer Bacani McKenney, who runs a family medicine practice in Fredonia, Kansas, with her father — where Carrie Lester is a patient — says the CCM program has worked well.

She says having a system to keep in touch with patients at least once a month has reduced their use of emergency rooms — including for some who were prone to visits for nonemergency reasons, such as running out of medication or even feeling lonely. The CCM funding enables the practice's medical assistant to call patients regularly to check in, something it could not afford before.

For a small practice, having a staffer who can generate extra revenue makes a big difference, McKenney says.

While she estimates about 90% of their patients would qualify for the program, only about 20% are enrolled. One reason is that not everyone needs or wants the calls, she says.

While the program has captured interest among internists and family medicine doctors, it has also paid out hundreds of thousands of dollars to specialists, such as those in cardiology, urology and gastroenterology, the KFF Health News analysis finds. Primary care doctors are often seen as the ones who coordinate patient care, making the payments to specialists notable.

A federally funded study by Mathematica in 2017 found the CCM program saves Medicare $74 per patient per month, or $888 per patient per year — due mostly to a decreased need for hospital care.

The study quoted providers who were unhappy with attempts to outsource CCM work. "Third-party companies out there turn this into a racket," the study cites one physician saying, noting that companies employ nurses who don't know patients.

Nancy McCall, a Mathematica researcher who co-authored the 2017 study, says doctors are not the only resistance point. "Patients may not want to be bothered or asked if they are exercising or losing weight or watching their salt intake," she says.

How outsourcing works

Still, some physician groups say it's convenient to outsource the program.

UnityPoint Health, a large integrated health system based in Iowa, tried doing chronic care management on its own, but found it administratively burdensome, says Dawn Welling, the UnityPoint Clinic's chief nursing officer.

For the past year, it has contracted with a Miami-based company, HealthSnap, to enroll patients, have its nurses make check-in calls each month, and help with billing. HealthSnap helps manage care for more than 16,000 of UnityPoint Health's Medicare patients — a small fraction of its Medicare patients, which includes those enrolled in Medicare Advantage.

Some doctors were anxious about sharing patient records and viewed the program as a sign they weren't doing enough for patients, Welling says. But she says the program has been helpful, particularly to many enrollees who are isolated and need help changing their diet and other behaviors to improve health.

"These are patients who call the clinic regularly and have needs, but not always clinical needs," Welling says.

Samson Magid, CEO of HealthSnap, says more doctors have started participating in CCM since Medicare increased pay in 2022 for 20 minutes of work, to $62 from $41, and added billing codes for additional time.

To help ensure patients pick up the phone, caller ID shows HealthSnap calls as coming from their doctor's office, not from wherever the company's nurse might be located. The company also hires nurses from different regions so they may speak with dialects similar to those of the patients they work with, Magid says.

He says some enrollees have been in the program for three years and many could stay enrolled for life, which means they can bill patients and Medicare long-term.

Melania's a no-show Monday, but her presence at Trump's hush money trial could be 'powerful,' legal experts say

  • Opening statements in Donald Trump's first criminal trial began on Monday.
  • The former president's family has not attended jury selection.
  • But their presence, especially Melania's, could have a powerful impact, legal experts say.

Insider Today

Donald Trump enters his first criminal trial every day flanked by lawyers, court officers, Secret Service members, and political advisors.

But not his wife and children.

Melania Trump and the former president's children have not attended this past week as seven men and five women were chosen as jurors for his historic Manhattan hush-money trial .

And while it's not uncommon for family members of defendants to sit out the slogging jury-selection process, legal experts say their presence — especially that of Melania Trump — could have a strong positive impact on jurors.

Opening statements in the trial got underway on Monday and Melania Trump, nor any of Trump's other family members for that matter, did not show up in court.

Trump ignored a shouted question from a reporter on Monday morning asking him where Melania Trump was before he headed into the 15th-floor courtroom. Instead, Trump took the opportunity to bash the case against him as a political "witch hunt."

"I'm here instead of being able to be in Pennsylvania and Georgia, and lots of other places campaigning, and it's very unfair," Trump told reporters in the courtroom hallway.

'No question that Melania is the most important'

Mark Bederow, a criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor for the Manhattan district attorney's office, told Business Insider, "There's no question that Melania is the most important family member to be there."

Bederow explained that Melania Trump's courtroom support could be "potentially very powerful" given the salacious nature of the hush-money case against Trump.

Making Trump at least look like a wholesome, beloved husband and father might help him.

"Certainly, if Melania were there supporting him, that potentially sends a message that 'I support him, I'm OK, I believe, perhaps, this didn't happen,'" Bederow said. "I think that can only have a positive impact on the jury."

This is especially important in a trial where the words "porn actress" and "extra-marital affair" will be lobbed at Trump by prosecutors.

Prosecutors from the Manhattan district attorney's office say Trump falsified 34 business records to disguise a $130,000 hush-money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels .

The payment to buy Daniels' silence over an alleged 2006 sexual encounter with a married Trump was part of an illegal scheme to influence the 2016 election, according to prosecutors.

Jill Huntley Taylor, a jury consultant, told BI that the presence of Trump's family will likely magnify the jurors' other impressions of the case.

If the jurors are inclined to side with Trump, thinking the case is lousy, then they'd understand why his family didn't show up, she said. If they side against Trump, they might wonder why none of his family members are supporting him.

"Trump doesn't want to be there," Huntley Taylor said. "I could see jurors, if they're favoring him thinking, 'Well, he's not going to make his family be there.' And I can see jurors who are not favoring him thinking, 'Well, wouldn't your family want to support you in this while you're on trial?'"

His family — or lack thereof

Courtrooms are, by design, "sensory deprivation tanks," joked Julia Vitullo-Martin, a criminal justice consultant and former director for the Citizens Jury Project , an initiative of the Vera Institute of Justice .

So when there's downtime in the courtroom, jurors, who don't have their electronics, have little else to do but study the defendant and whoever is with them.

"So you look around, and you assess the defendant's demeanor, his clothes, his family — or his lack thereof," Vitullo-Martin said.

Jurors have sworn they will judge Trump's case solely on the evidence. But their observations of the defendant — and any family present — will influence their eventual verdict, she said.

"They're human beings," she said of jurors.

"And defense attorneys have always known this, which is why they are so conscious of how their client is coming across to the jury."

'Kind of the elephant in the room'

Whether family shows up for Trump should not matter to the jury, but Bederow said it's only natural for jurors to wonder why Melania Trump or any other family member might not show their solidarity in the courtroom for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

"It's not evidence of anything, and it's not the kind of thing they're supposed to consider, but I think it's kind of the elephant in the room," Bederow said.

Related stories

Even in criminal trials with more dire stakes — and where defendants have been accused of far worse — it's common for family members to attend and show support.

Fallen cryptocurrency mogul Sam Bankman-Fried had watched his parents in the front row of the gallery for every day of his monthlong trial. Even Ghislaine Maxwell , who trafficked girls to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein for sex and sexually abused them herself, had two sisters and a brother attending her trial nearly every day.

Melania Trump did not show up for her husband's past Manhattan trials

But Melania Trump has been a no-show in Trump's other three Manhattan trials, all of which he lost, and at a cost of more than $600 million in judgments against him.

The former First Lady also did not attend either Trump's first or his second E. Jean Carroll federal defamation trials, in April, 2023 and in January of this year.

She was also a no-show at last year's civil fraud trial .

Trump himself stayed away entirely from the first Carroll trial, at which a jury found him liable for sexual assault.

These absences likely do not make jurors' hearts grow fonder, according to legal experts.

"A defendant's demeanor and appearance in front of a jury is critically important, from the very start of jury selection through the return of a verdict," Justin Danilewitz, a former federal prosecutor told BI.

Danilewitz added, "And although a defendant cannot, of course, communicate directly with a jury, perceptive jurors will note the courtroom surroundings and the support of family a defendant may have."

Former Brooklyn prosecutor Arthur Aidala echoed those remarks.

"Typically, you want family members there to show the jury that the defendant has a lot of support," he said.

Aidala, a criminal defense attorney who has represented Rudy Giuliani and Harvey Weinstein, agreed Melania Trump's presence at the trial would be "key" but noted that he did not believe the attendance of family would have much of an impact in this case.

"It's not the kind of case where sympathy matters. Usually family matters when you want the sympathy of the jury for the defendant. That's not the case here," Aidala said. "People know Trump. Family will not change their opinion."

Danilewitz, a current white-collar partner at the law firm Saul Ewing, said Trump's defense team may have a different strategy in mind when it comes to Melania Trump.

"Ordinarily, in a case like this, the appearance of a spouse may well send an important signal of support," said Danielwitz. "But the defense strategy here is likely to signal that this trial is not worth the time of the defendant, and even less the time of his close family."

"Attending could suggest a level of importance the defense does not want to give the case," he said.

Instead of family, Trump has been surrounded in court by lawyers and support staff.

They include his four main criminal defense lawyers in the case — Todd Blanche, Susan Necheles, Emil Bove, and Gedalia Stern — and a rotating cast of political aides working for his 2024 presidential campaign, including Steven Cheung, Jason Miller, Margo Martin, and Natalie Harp.

On Friday, they were joined by Clifford Robert, one of Trump's family's lawyers in the New York attorney general's civil fraud trial against the Trump Organization last year.

Melania Trump is portrayed as the 'mistreated wife' in the hush-money case

They spend a lot of time together, but they're not the wife and kids.

Melania Trump "is the mistreated wife in this narrative that the DA is saying," Bederow said, explaining, "If she's not there, jurors may take note of that. Certainly the media will."

Given that the prosecution's narrative includes Trump having an affair, Trump's lawyers may have deemed it wiser to keep Melania Trump away, according to Huntley Taylor, the jury consultant.

"It seems like you would have to really think twice about whether you want to put her through that," she said.

The presence of Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, at her father's criminal trial could also be impactful, but the appearance of his sons, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. likely wouldn't matter, according to Bederow.

"Let's be honest, if Donald Jr. and Eric Trump showed up, is that going to make it any better? No. Probably, if anything, it potentially makes it worse," said Bederow. "But it's a different story with Melania and Ivanka."

"People who are inclined not to like Donald Trump probably view the sons in the same way just because they're very vocal defenders of their father, which is natural and expected," Bederow continued. "But they're also very involved in the political game and the media game that surrounds everything involving Trump."

Melania Trump has privately called the charges against her husband "a disgrace," even though she was initially furious at him when news of the alleged affair broke in 2018, according to the New York Times .

If Trump's family does decide to show up to support Trump in court during the trial, they might want to wear sweaters. The temperature in the courtroom is very cold .

This story was originally published on April 21 and has been updated.
