Payday 3: how to research skills.

Enhance your abilities!

Quick Links

How to research skills.

Payday 3 has a ton of skills available, many of which could change the way you experience the game and complete a heist. Each skill gives you new abilities that could help you survive longer during intense battles against the cops, especially on higher difficulty levels.

RELATED: Payday 3: How To Unlock Infamous Rewards

There are also some skills that can add up to your stealth option when robbing a certain place, but most of them require research. Simply put, researching is a process of unlocking a certain skill tree in the game, and here we'll tell you all you need to know about it

Head to the Loadout menu and then select the Skills panel . Now, you will see that some rows of skills are locked with the very first skill in the row having a "Research" tag on it. If you hover your mouse over it and press "R" you will begin to research that certain skill row. You can only pick one at a time.

Now, in order to make progress in the research process, you will need to play the game . This is probably the most confusing aspect, as t he game never actually states what you need to do to complete the research. But, based on our experience, anything that gives you XP in the game will contribute to your research progression as well .

Simply play the heists and try to complete as many challenges as possible to fill in the research bar. It doesn't usually take long to research a skill tree, especially if you manage to complete a heist at a difficulty level higher than "Normal."

Once the research is completed, the entire row of the selected skill will be unlocked, but you will still need to earn skill points to be able to equip them all. However, you can ditch your current skills to equip the new ones instead. Some skill rows are focused on combat, while others give you more stealth-based abilities. Like the ability to hack cameras with your phone, distract them, or even destroy them without shooting a single bullet.

Four heisters from Payday 3 standing in a vault

If you want to conquer the most formidable heists in Payday 3 , you’ll need a loadout full of useful skills to smooth over your inevitable mistakes and buff your paydirt potential.

If you’ve played Payday 2 , the first thing you’ll notice is that the skills system has changed considerably with Payday 3 — we’ll explain how skills work in Payday 3 , and with that in mind, the best skills to get first . Happy heisting!

If you’re looking to cater your loadout to a specific playstyle, then our best stealth build guide may help.

How skills work in Payday 3

A loadout in Payday 3

Before you enter a heist, you must choose individual skill trees to research and unlock, and as you earn XP, you will eventually unlock the base skill of that tree. Then, you must select the base skill of any tree and continue earning XP to unlock the subskills associated with that tree.

Depending on how many skill points you have, you can progress multiple skill trees at a time by selecting multiple base skills, but you need to have researched the skill tree first.

It’s slightly confusing, but you’ll get used to it eventually. Fortunately, it means that if you like the look of certain skills, you can get to them fairly quickly by focusing on specific skill trees.

The Glitch Protocol skill in Payday 3

Additionally, when you kick off your criminal career in Payday 3 , your skill point allocation will be severely limited. For reference, I’m Level 38, and while I’ve researched every skill tree in its entirety, I still only have 11 skill points to allocate.

Your level only dictates how many skill points you can have active at any one time; you can access any skill you want as soon as it is researched, even at a low level. In the early game, this means you’ll need to be wily about which skill trees you research first and which skills you commit to your build.

It’s also worth mentioning that many of your skills in Payday 3 are tied to a new trio of buffs that can be activated and refreshed with certain skills:

  • Edge: You deal 10% extra damage
  • Grit: You take 10% less damage
  • Rush: Your movement speed is increased

Whatever you choose — you can also refund all of your skill points at any time, so nothing is set in stone if you don’t like your build.

At a glance, we’d recommend these as the best skills to get first in Payday 3 :

Secure Loop (Hacker)

Quick fingers (infiltrator), battering ram (escapist), open mic (grifter), stockholm syndrome (manipulator), glitch protocol (hacker), bagger (infiltrator).

Rather than incremental buffs, our recommendations cater to the skills that will give you the most tangible early-game benefits across stealthy and loud heists. Let’s go through all these skills, one-by-one.

A view of a corridor from a hacked security camera in Payday 3

Nothing is certain except death, taxes and cameras in a Payday 3 heist. They’re everywhere, on every difficulty, whether you’re casing the joint or gunning your way through it. Secure Loop is the second skill in the Hacker tree, and it allows you to hack a camera and loop its footage so it won’t spot you slinking towards a vault in a secure area or engaging in any kind of criminal activity, for that matter.

If you’re not yet adept at courting a camera’s perspective or simply too impatient to wait, Secure Loop lets you proceed where you would otherwise be stuck.

The lockpicking minigame in Payday 3

Another certainty in Payday 3 is the humble lockpicking minigame. It’s often what stands between your heisting crew and copious wads of cash. Quick Fingers allows you to instantly finish the minigame with a single successful jiggle if you have the Rush buff activated. Thankfully, you’ll need to have the base Infiltrator skill unlocked to use it, and the base skill provides you with Rush when you pick a lock or kill an enemy with a throwing knife.

Primarily, this means that if you’re in a room with multiple locked doors or a bank vault with a ton of deposit boxes, after you pick the first door, you can crack the rest in quadruple time and get away before the next assault hits.

Going through a doorway in Payday 3

Battering Ram is the final skill in the Escapist tree, and it allows players to barge through any locked door by sprinting at it, as long as they have any of the three buffs active. As well as being a good chaser to any Edge or Grit build, you’ll need the initial Escapist skill to activate it, which gives you Rush if you sprint consistently for 3 seconds.

This is mighty useful in many situations, and it’ll often happen naturally, but it also means you can run in a circle quickly to earn Rush and then barge through any door that would usually take ages to lockpick.

Answering a radio in Payday 3

The Grifter tree is mainly concerned with helping you during maskless stealth runs, where you’re trying to get in and out without even leaving casing mode. Every skill in this tree is very useful for stealth, but one that persists across all manner of builds is Open Mic, which allows you to answer radios 50% faster.

This means that if you have to shoot multiple guards to avoid getting found out, you have a much higher chance of answering each radio and delaying the assault for a little while longer.

Looking at a tied up hostage in Payday 3

It’s already worth progressing the Manipulator skill tree for the initial ability, which lets you tie up and trade hostages 50% faster, as whether you’re going loud or creeping around, you’ll be interacting with civilians in some regard.

However, if you are more of a guns-blazing type, it’s worth progressing to the end of this tree for the Stockholm Syndrome skill, which allows you to shout at hostages or cowering civilians and make them revive you. This is especially useful during solo runs, as the AI bots can be a bit spotty with the pick-ups.

Hacking a radio in Payday 3

A second Hacker skill makes the list, but not without reason. Glitch Protocol allows you to hack a guard’s radio and distract them for five seconds. Primarily, you can use this brief window to steal a key item or slip into a secure area undetected.

However, it’s also helpful if you get caught. If you hack a guard’s radio when they’re escorting you, they’ll forget about it and start patrolling. Similarly, if they’re about to arrest you, they can be hacked to enter Search mode instead.

Picking up jewellery in Payday 3

Once you’ve tied up your hostages, picked all the locks, deactivated cameras and answered the guard radios, the only thing left to do is secure your loot. The Bagger skill in the Infiltrator tree offers a simple 50% speed boost when you’re picking up precious cargo, and it can be the difference between escape or certain death when you’re besieged by an army of cops. You need the Rush buff to activate this benefit, which will activate if you pick a lock or kill an enemy with a throwing knife, thanks to the base skill of the Infiltrator tree.

You could also grab the base skill of Escapist to make this easier, which allows you to activate Rush by sprinting. Across both stealth and loud approaches, the speed boost will benefit you greatly when you’re compromised and need to get out of dodge.

How to research in Payday 3

Image of Raza Malik

Unlocking skills and applying them to your loadout is important in Payday 3. They make your loadout better and enhance your play style. Leveling up your Infamy to earn more skills is fairly easy to do, you just need to complete objectives or play on a harder difficulty. However, earning new skill lines to get more skills seems to be a straightforward route, but for one reason or another, the game doesn’t explain it well. You earn skill lines as you play which unlocks more skills. To have more skill lines available to you, you have to research whichever line you want. This guide will show how to research in Payday 3, otherwise, you might have a boring time playing.

Payday 3: How to Research

By researching you can open up whole new ways to play. Knowing how to level up fast can make researching more fluid and consistent. When you go into the  skills page  in Payday 3, you can see an assortment of options. The first few will be unlocked already, but as you play you get more options. In the same skill screen, navigate to a  locked skill line and press R over it . This will start the research countdown.  You can only research 1 skill line at a time , so note that with what type of build you’re making. For example, if you’re running a stealth build look for the skill lines that benefit that. Once you unlock the line, you can spend skill points on skills that are on that line. If you don’t pick a skill line, the game will automatically pick one for you, and it might not be the one you want. So keep on manually doing it.

Payday 3 Skill Menu

How to fill up the research bar

This part is a tad bit confusing. When I was playing, I thought it was whenever I did an objective or played a heist. However, it seems to be a mixture of both. If you consistently play the game, you can unlock all the lines in no time and spend your skill points on whichever line you pick. In other words, do everything in the game and complete the heist to quickly fill up the bar. This seems like a great way to get players to keep on playing because it helps them unlock more skill lines as they progress.

How to research & equip new skills in PAYDAY 3

Skill points are an important aspect of PAYDAY 3 as they form an integral part of the progression system. Slowly improving your capabilities as a heister, earning more skill points and unlocking additional slots will be key to completing more heists, more quickly.

PAYDAY 3 can be an incredibly tricky game, with you needing to take out tricky enemies like Dozers and Shields in their droves. You can call in favors to make the process a little easier, but the best way to become more powerful is to max out your skill points in the game.

So, to learn more about the max number of skill points you can have in PAYDAY 3, as well as how you can earn more and equip them, keep reading.

How to research new skills in PAYDAY 3

Skills work a little differently in PAYDAY 3 to most other games, in that you first need to research a skill before you can equip it. To research a skill, highlight it in the skill tree and press the corresponding ‘Research’ button , depending on your platform.

You’ll need to research each skill point in order as you progress through the skill tree. Once you’ve selected a skill to research, you’ll now need to head into a game and earn some XP. The XP that you earn from completing a heist will then count towards the research progression of your chosen skill . After meeting the research requirement, you’ll be able to equip the skill.

How to equip and unequip skills in PAYDAY 3

You can only equip a new skill if have enough skill points to use .

When you first start PAYDAY 3, you’ll only have three available skill points to equip at any one time. However, as you progress through the game and raise your infamy level , you’ll eventually unlock more skill points to be equipped simultaneously.

To equip a skill, head to the Skills tab in the Loadout menu . Then, select a skill from the tree that you’d like to equip.

If you don’t have enough skill points to use, you can unequip another skill at your leisure to use somewhere else.

What is the maximum number of skill points in PAYDAY 3?

The PAYDAY 3 loadout screen

There are 105 different skills to unlock in PAYDAY 3, although the maximum number you can equip at the moment is 21 .

PAYDAY 3 doesn’t make it clear at which levels you unlock new Skill Points, so be sure to return to the Skills menu in the loadout screen often. Once you reach level 100, you’ll unlock the maximum number of skill points.

Payday 3 skills, skill tree and skill points explained

We explain the skill tree in Payday 3, as well as how you can respec your skill points and research new skills

Payday 3 skills tree points

Payday 3 skills and the skill tree are essential to understand if you're going to thrive in Payday 3, as these skills provide new powers and abilities that can provide a massive advantage, especially if you know how to apply and respec them depending on what heist you're about to go into, and how you want to handle it.

Having played through the game myself for a while, I'll take you through the basics of the Payday 3 skill system, along with how you can get more points, how you research skills, and how you can generally make a hired goon of the highest order.

How do Payday 3 skills and skill points work?

Payday 3 skills tree points

The Payday 3 skill system works as follows:

  • Players select what skills they want to " research " from the skill tree, found in the loadout menu.
  • Experience gained in heists is then converted into "research."
  • When fully researched, the skill can now be selected by putting a skill point into it.
  • You can also deselect a skill at any time and put that point into something else, allowing you to respec.
  • You gain more skill points as you gain more Infamy , done by completing the challenges displayed in the main menu.

Payday 3 safes Payday 3 Flash Drive Payday 3 lead guard Payday 3 Favors Payday 3 cameras

This is a slightly more complex system than it probably needs to be, but the upshot is that you should pick all the skills you're most interested in straight away and start researching those (if you don't pick any, it just works down the list in the order they're displayed).

You're much more likely to be limited by skill points than the amount of researched skills you can have. Even when you max out your infamy, you only get 21 skill points , so you'll never have a full range of skills or anything close to it. Instead, you'll need to carefully pick and choose - go for stealth and hacking skills if you're interested in going quiet, or go for armor and weapon skills if you intend to go in guns a-blazing.

All Payday 3 Skills

Payday 3's skill tree system is filled with room for creativity, combining multiple different skills for multiple different possibilities. There's over 100 skills to choose from in Payday 3 and this guide will cover all of them, creating a comprehensive list of what the skills do and what their best fit is into each playstyle.

Unlocking Skills

Skill points can be earned by leveling up in-game. Currently, you can gain up to 21 skill points, getting your last skill point at Infamy level 100.

Skills can be gained by researching the respective tree by selecting it from the skill tree window or highlighting the tree you want to research and clicking the hotkey. Researching happens automatically after completing heists and then your game will automatically go down the list and research the next available skill tree.

In order to keep earning experience in each skill tree, you must have at least one point invested into that skill tree when completing heists, then you will gain experience for that skill tree.

20230921142739 1.jpg

There are 17 different skill trees in Payday 3, with 105 individual skills and 17 mastered nodes, which you can get after researching the entire tree. Each skill tree offers a different playstyle, so mix and match different skills and weapons and find out which one is your favorite!

Skills take one point to learn and you have to invest in the first node in order to invest in the rest of the tree with the exception of the Master Node which can be learned without prior investment after you've unlocked the skill.

The first node in each tree can also be Aced for another skill point, which provides another benefit to the skill but is not required for advancing the skill tree.

Payday 3 skill tree and skill point levels explained

Image of Pierce Bunch

Payday 3 has a unique system for acquiring new skills and advancing to new tiers of already-owned skills. The system is not only different from most conventional skill tree systems we’ve seen, but it’s even different from the one in Payday 2 . Naturally, it’s helpful to have the skill progression system in Payday 3 explained.

This article will break down Payday 3′ s skill system, including how to unlock skills from new trees and how to advance to better skills within a given tree.

Payday 3 Skill Trees explained

In Payday 3 , there are 17 different skill trees . Don’t let this number intimidate you, though; each tree only has between five and seven different skills. The skill trees in Payday 3 are:

  • Ammo Specialist
  • Infiltrator
  • Sharpshooter
  • Demolitionist
  • Manipulator
  • CQC Specialist

Each tree has a different forte and will enhance a loadout in different ways . Fortunately, they are all very straightforward and easy to understand. Skimming through each skill tree from the loadout menu should be sufficient to understand what each one does.

Displays the loadout customization menu in Payday 3. A female human model stands on the right side of the screen wearing a green clown mask.

How to research and unlock new skill trees in Payday 3

When you’re new to Payday 3 and still a low level, you’ll notice that many skill trees are locked. You’ll naturally unlock each of the 17 skill trees as you progress in the game, but you actually get to choose the order this happens in if you so desire.

Go to Loadout – Skills and you’ll see an option to “ Research ” by pressing Y on controller or R on PC . By selecting a locked skill to be researched, all XP will be applied towards unlocking that specific skill tree rather than the chronological next tree.

Here is an example of how this functions. If you have unlocked the first five skill trees (Medic–Tank), the next you would unlock is Sharpshooter. If you select Engineer as your researched skill (the 11th skill tree), Engineer will become the next skill tree that you unlock, after which progress towards unlocking Sharpshooter will resume.

You can research any skill tree you want at any time, so the order new trees are unlocked is always under your control. If at any time you don’t select a new skill tree for research, chronological progression will resume, so you’ll always be working towards unlocking a new tree even if you don’t specify which one.

Researching only works for unlocking new skill trees ; it cannot be used to advance within specific trees. Once every skill tree in unlocked, you no longer have any need for the Research feature.

How to advance within Skill Trees and access higher skill ranks in Payday 3

Skill tree advancement is straightforward in Payday 3 . To unlock more skills in a given tree, you must complete heists with at least one skill from that tree equipped . If you want to unlock the fourth skill in the Gunslinger tree, you must use skills from the Gunslinger tree. Skill progression is shared throughout all loadouts ; you only have to unlock a skill tree or tier one time to have it available for all loadouts.

Displays the description for the Battering Ram skill in Payday 3.

The amount of XP needed to unlock higher tiers in a skill tree goes up with each tier, so the time between tiers will get longer and longer as you continue advancing. You can select different skills for each different loadout, and you can even reset skill points in a loadout at any time for free. This conveniently means you don’t have to stress out about making the “right” choice for skill point distribution. Have fun and try out new things. You can always change your mind later.

Basic and Aced Skills in Payday 3, explained

Not only does each skill tree have multiple different tiers, specific skills often have two ranks: Basic and Aced . Not every skill has multiple ranks, but those that do will clearly explain what each rank does.

Displays the Aced skill bonus for the Infiltrator skill in Payday 3.

Putting one skill point into a skill unlocks the Basic bonus, and putting a second point in that same skill grants the Aced bonus. Aced bonuses are always a new effect , not just a better percentage of the Basic bonus, so make sure you take the time to read what each one does before deciding if a skill is worth putting a second point into.

The best skills to research first in Payday 3

Jesse Lennox

While there are no classes to pick between in Payday 3 , you do still have complete control over how your character plays and what role they will have in any given heist. The obvious changes will be in your weapons and equipment loadouts, but it is in the skill system where you are really free to personalize your masked criminal. You begin the game with two unlocked naturally, but quickly see that there are dozens more to unlock and try out within various categories. You’re not able to simply pick any one that looks good and give it a try, though, but must instead research them before you’re able to unlock them. Considering this will take a few missions at least with you and your friends , here are the ones you should prioritize researching first in Payday 3 .

How skills and buffs work

Best skills to research first.

Researching a skill is mostly passive, but you do need to select which skill you want to be working on at any time — you can’t research them all at once. If you don’t pick one, the game will automatically apply research to the first skill in the list, which likely isn’t going to be what you want. To choose which skill you want to research, just highlight it in the skill menu and choose “Research” to mark it as the skill your points will go toward.

Some skills incorporate one of the three buffs, which are Edge, Grit, and Rush. When triggered, Edge gives you 10% more damage, Grit reduces damage taken by 10%, and Rush boosts your movement speed.

  • The best skills in Rise of the Ronin
  • The best armor in Helldivers 2
  • The best weapons in Helldivers 2

Even if you can’t fully manage to pull off a heist quietly, your team will at least want to try and get as much done as possible before the cops show up. Hacking is useful on nearly every level since it lets you hack into any level’s CCTV system via the cameras rather than having to get all the way inside to wherever the security room is. Cameras are tough to spot and can easily give away your team, so shut them down early.

Sometimes there’s no avoiding a shootout. When the bullets start flying, you’ll be glad to have some extra firepower on your side once you realize just how fragile you are. The Engineer skill gives you access to a Sentry Turret that you can plop down wherever you wish to cover an area.

Speaking of survival, Enforcer is great to keep you alive while being aggressive. For every two close-quarters kills you get within a four-second window, you get the 10% damage reduction buff. Most maps have you in closed space, such as banks, where you can easily funnel cops into close quarters for quick kills to activate this skill.

Every character has armor and health, with armor able to regenerate segments so long as that section isn’t completely removed. This can take a while, forcing you to hide in cover or lose your armor entirely. Tank makes your armor regenerate 20% faster, plus adds two more charges to your armor bag to restore lost chunks when it inevitably happens.

Games have always been meant to be played with other people. Sure, there are dozens of fantastic single-player experiences out there, and those are some of our favorites, but there's something different about experiencing a game with one or more real people either sitting next to you or across the world via an online experience. Most of the time, games focus on competition, but many of us would rather team up with our friends than fight against them. Thankfully, games that offer full-on co-op experiences are better than ever on the PlayStation 5.

Right from the console's launch, the PS5 has offered ways for friends, family, and everyone who enjoys games to come together and experience them. There are amazing co-op experiences to be found in just about every genre out there, meaning you are sure to find at least one that fits your specific tastes. To help you in your search for the best co-op games for you and your partner to try out, here are the best ones we could find on the PS5.

Payday 3: Best Skill Trees To Invest In First

With an abundance of skill trees in Payday 3, players should only focus on a few for their first bout of heisting.

  • Payday 3 features 17 skill trees, allowing players to customize their builds and create unique and powerful playstyles.
  • The Ammo Specialist skill tree is great for loud builds, offering increased ammo capacity and extra damage for players with full magazines.
  • The Hacker skill tree is perfect for stealth activities, providing players with the ability to hack cameras and access the CCTV system, as well as loop cameras to avoid detection.

There are 17 skill trees in Payday 3 , with many more bound to appear as DLC emerges. In Payday 3 , players can use up to 5 skills at once, with each one from a different tree. Players can create some unique builds thanks to the best skill trees in Payday 3 , each with the ability to create something new and intensely powerful.

When players begin their journey into Payday 3 , they need to research a skill tree of their choice. To create the best builds, it’s a good idea to invest in these skill trees listed below, for they can create some unique advantages for players who enjoy a stealth playthrough or a loud playthrough.

5 Ammo Specialist

BASIC – Your reserve ammo capacity is increased by 20%. Ammo bags you deploy have 2 additional charges.

ACED – Whenever you pick up ammo, if your current weapon’s magazine is full, you gain EDGE if you don’t have it.

Ammo Specialist is a great skill to invest in for players that desire something for their loud builds, and for those players who want to get in there with their guns blazing . The fact that players will have 20% more ammo is a great start to this skill tree and is only extended further by the fact that they gain EDGE, which will deal 10% extra damage.

Continuing through the Ammo Specialist tree, players will find some great perks worth investing in, such as Plate Up. This ensures that when the player has GRIT, they will regain and regenerate armor chunks if they pick up ammo from the countless enemies that they are bound to kill during the many and endless assault waves.

BASIC – You can hack cameras to gain access to the area’s CCTV system. This functions as though you had accessed the heist’s security room. You gain one Runtime.

ACED – You can overload a device that already has an active Runtime. This will cause an electrical explosion that will stun anyone within range and destroy the device. You gain one additional Runtime.

Hacker is one of the best skills in Payday 3 for stealth perks. With Hacker, players are able to access the guard’s CCTV system, meaning they can look through every camera available in the heist and tag security, civilians, and points of interest.

RELATED: Payday 3: Crossplay and Crossprogression Explained

Further down the Hacker tree, players can pick up skills like Secure Loop, which allows players to loop cameras, ensuring that they can walk past the camera for a limited time without the camera alerting guards. Hacker is dedicated to stealth activities from a distance, like activating lures and guard radios, perfect for the heisters with the art of sneaking.

BASIC – Whenever you kill 2 enemies within 4 seconds that are within 5 meters of you, you gain GRIT.

ACED – Whenever you kill 1 enemy within 5 meters range, if you have GRIT, gain EDGE.

The Enforcer skill tree is dedicated to those who want to kill things without the fear of losing damage and taking damage. The fact that Enforcer blends both EDGE and GRIT means they can build up to extra damage and take less damage, making them a tank on the battlefield.

RELATED: Payday 3: How To Farm XP Fast

Enforcer is not a perk for those who want to commit to stealth , and as players progress through the skill, they are easily going to notice the joys of this perk tree. The perk tree is all about killing, and all about the benefits of doing such with the many different assaults from SWAT and specialists.

BASIC – Increase the regeneration speed of your armor chunks by 20%. Your armor bag has 2 additional charges.

ACED – Whenever one of your armor chunks breaks, gain or refresh GRIT.

Another mighty skill tree for loud, players should research and invest in this one if they feel like going for aggressive play with some powerful weapons in Payday 3 . Players might not be able to regenerate health, but they do regenerate armor, so the fact that Tank can regenerate armor 20% faster is a benefit to players.

The Tank skill tree is all about keeping armor secure, and it benefits the Armor Bag gear that players can bring with them. There’s also a great skill along the tree, Last Man Standing, which makes players commit to damage immunity, at the cost of their GRIT, and if they use a shotgun , they are practically a close-up indestructible machine of death.

BASIC – As long as you are masked off, if you are within 1 meter of a civilian or employee, gain RUSH.

ACED – When you mask on, any civilians and employees within 10 meters that can see you will become intimidated.

A superior skill for those who embark on a stealth journey, Grifter is one of the best starting skills in Payday 3 due to the fact that they can move faster whilst they are in Casing Mode. This means players can better navigate areas, both public and private. Masking up near civilians will also allow players to intimidate them, causing them to stay down and not call for cops or run for help.

Grifter is all about exploration and the benefits of Casing Mode. As players progress through this skill tree, they will easily be able to navigate through private areas without concern from employees, and they’ll even be able to lockpick handcuffs if a guard has arrested them for trespassing, but in case the cop comes back, it's best to have a handy pistol as a backup.

Payday 3: The 10 Best Skills

These are the best skills in Payday 3.

There's a long list of available skills in Payday 3 . They're organized through skill trees, and the majority of skills require you to invest a skill point into the base skill of the tree to access the rest. You'll also need to earn experience points to research and unlock your desired skills.

Payday 3: 9 Tips For Playing Solo

Knowing what skills you're aiming for will save you time in creating your ideal build for robbing the rich. While each skill holds its respective place in the game, there are some that are a cut above the rest. The best skills in the game are capable of shaping how entire heists play out while tipping the scales in your favor. And they'll get you filthy rich .

10 Cutting Shot

Cutting Shot increases armor penetration if you have Edge, the temporary buff that gives ten percent extra damage. It's available under the Sharpshooter skill tree, which gives Edge after one and a half seconds of aiming down sights with its base skill.

Armor penetration is the best stat for taking down enemies late into a heist. Cutting Shot greatly increases damage output and the Edge requirement is simple thanks to the Sharpshooter base skill. If you're looking for more firepower, Cutting Shot is a great skill for the job.

Close range combat will be your bread and butter with Enforcer. This base skill of the Enforcer tree grants Grit, the temporary buff that reduces incoming damage by ten percent, whenever you kill two enemies in four seconds that are within five meters of you.

If you put a second point into the skill to ace it, you'll gain Edge whenever you kill an enemy within five meters if you already have Grit. The Enforcer base skill perfectly pairs with a shotgun. Grit and Edge will constantly activate during assault waves if you stick to holding entryways.

8 Misdirect

Cloakers and Zappers will learn to fear you with the Misdirect skill. When you have Rush, the temporary buff that gives increased movement speed, Misdirect will heavily stagger any marked Cloaker or Zapper that attempts to disable you. This skill is under the Strategist skill tree.

Misdirect is one of the best options available for special enemy defense. Staggering a Cloaker or Zapper is a death sentence for them as they often rely on quick movements and the element of surprise. The only tricky part of this skill is meeting the requirements to have it activate. Rush isn't available in the Strategist skill tree, so you'll need to find an alternative source such as the Escapist base skill. Then it's just a matter of you and your team marking the enemies before they reach you.

7 Walk The Walk

The best skill for stealth, Walk the Walk makes cameras unable to detect you trespassing in private areas if you're unmasked and have Rush. Cameras are your biggest opponent in stealth, and this skill greatly nullifies their threat, though they'll still see you perform illegal actions.

Payday 3: Best Stealth Build

The skill is available under the Grifter skill tree, whose base skill grants Rush whenever you're unmasked and within a meter of a civilian or employee. If you have any intention of stealth, Walk The Walk is one of the best pickups you can get.

A simple yet effective skill, Armor Up restores an additional armor chunk whenever you interact with an armor bag. Armor is your leading defense against enemy attacks and is a necessity in surviving hordes of police assaults. The increased value in armor bag usages helps keep you and your allies healthy throughout a heist.

This skill is under the Tank skill tree. The base Tank skill increases armor regeneration and adds two additional charges to your armor bag, making Armor up one of the best skills to take for extra durability.

5 Dual Sentries

Two guns are better than one, and that's exactly what Dual Sentries provides. This skill allows you to place a second sentry turret during a heist to fully lockdown areas with supporting fire. Sentries pump out damage and are well-worth taking if you have a skill like Dual Sentries equipped.

Dual Sentries does have the drawback of the sentries overheating 50 percent quicker than a standard one, but this isn't an issue if you're mindful about resetting them. Any of the other perks in the Engineer skill tree will apply to both sentries to create dangerous, automatic allies.

Flashbangs are effective tools that'll severally weaken the police with Expose. Available under the Tactician skill tree, Expose makes damage against enemies stunned by your flashbangs ignore armor.

Enemies will have greater armor the longer a heist goes on, making armor penetration increasingly more valuable. Expose excels at clearing out swarming law enforcement to give you and your team breathing room amidst assault waves.

3 Heavy Hipfire

Under the Gunslinger skill tree lies Heavy Hipfire, the skill that makes all shots from the hip cause heavy staggers against enemies so long as you have Edge. Inflicting stagger briefly leaves enemies defenseless and unable to attack. This skill halts police pushes in their tracks and is a great pick for close range supremacy.

Payday 3: 10 Biggest Changes From Payday 2

The downside to this skill comes from the base Gunslinger skill. It grants Edge whenever you switch weapons, but aiming down sights will end any Edge you have. Committing to a close-range build is worth the cost for Heavy Hipfire.

2 Ammo Funnel

Available under the Mower skill tree, Ammo Funnel places any ammo picked up directly into your weapon's magazine if you have Edge active. It'll place ammo in your reserves like usual if your magazine is full.

The direct funnel into your magazine is incredibly helpful during an assault wave as it reduces how often you'll need to reload, which is when you're most vulnerable. While strong on its own, Ammo Funnel truly shines when paired with Replenish.

1 Replenish

Ammo consumption is difficult to manage when fending off assault waves, but Replenish does a fantastic job at satisfying your ammo needs. The skill allows you to automatically pick up ammo dropped by enemies that you've killed if you have Edge. If you're consistently hitting headshots, you'll often pick up more ammo than you're expending.

This skill is under the Mower skill tree, but it's easier to activate Edge with the Sharpshooter base skill which grants the buff after aiming down sights for one and a half seconds. The unseen value of Replenish is that it alleviates your need for an ammo bag, allowing you to take a different deployable to round out the team. Pairing Replenish with Ammo Funnel will make you a weapon of unending firepower .

Here is how the Payday 3 skill system works:

  • The maximum number of points you can use is 21.
  • Only the primary (first) skill in each row can be upgraded to its Aced version.

  • The final skill (the largest one) in every row is always available for selection. You do not need to unlock the primary skill to access it.
  • There are also three universal boosts - Edge, Grit, and Rush - that most skill trees use. These boosts are gained through certain actions and depleted by others. These boosts are gained through specific actions and spent on others.

Payday 3 Leveling Guide: Fastest Way to Farm XP for Guns and Skills

Image of Thomas Cunliffe

Leveling up weapons to earn new modifications and researching new skills makes Payday 3’s Challenges far easier and more fun. Without challenges, you can’t earn IP (Infamy Points) to earn new customization options , and you can’t heist good if you ain’t lookin’ good. This guide walks you through the fastest way to farm gun and skill XP in Payday 3 and impress your friends by completing a heist in just a few minutes.

How to Level Up in Payday 3

Leveling-Up-Payday-3

Completing a heist in Payday 3 earns you XP for your selected skill tree and equipped weapons . You don’t have to use your guns or use your skills to level them up; you’ll simply earn XP based on the difficulty of the heist.

If you’ve yet to unlock a certain Skill Tree, marking it for Research in the skills menu will allow you to earn XP towards your first skill of the tree. Once this is unlocked, t he only way to progress a skill tree is by having at least one skill from that tree equipped .

Your Infamy (player level), on the other hand, can only be leveled up by completing challenges that reward IP . The level cap is currently Level 150, though you’ll earn every non-preset weapon by Level 100.

Fastest Way to Earn Weapon and Skill XP in Payday 3

The best way to quickly farm weapon and skill XP in Payday 3 is by replaying stealth runs of Dirty Ice . Now, I know what you’re thinking — but with this guide and a little practice, Dirty Ice can be completed in 2-5 minutes . That’s an entire heist’s worth of XP in less time than it takes to brew a cup of tea.

How to Quickly Complete a Stealth Run of Dirty Ice

If you have them, equip the skills Escapist, Swift, Infiltrator , Quick Fingers, and Bagger , as well as the Standard Armor Lining , to ensure you’re able to complete the heist as fast as possible. ECM Jammers can also come in handy if things go awry. Select the weapons and skill trees you want to level, equip one of your guns with a silencer, and you’re good to go.

Dirty-Ice-Alleyway-Payday-3

Launch an invite-only match of Dirty Ice on Normal difficulty. Mask up , sprint into the alley , and give the civilian a good thwack to subdue them. Hide ’em so the guard doesn’t get suspicious.

Dirty-Ice-Window-Payday-3

Climb the wooden pallets to the roof. Jump on the vents, open the window , and drop in. Disable the camera as quickly as possible, then grab the civilian inside.

Managers-Office-QR-Payday-3

Poke the civilian over to the managers’ office and make them get down. You’ll need them later. Use the computer to take note of which code you need. Then, collect a QR code from a phone in the office.

VIP-Showroom-Payday-3

Kill the patrolling guard , answer the radio, and open the VIP Showroom with the QR code. Remember to take care of the camera.

Dirty-Ice-Door-Code-Payday-3

Take note of the code to the vault. Depending on what the computer said earlier, it’ll be in a book in the VIP room, on the whiteboard, or on the employee of the month photo.

Red-Keycard-Dirty-Ice-Payday-3

Head downstairs , disable the cameras , remove the final guard , and enter the correct code . Enter the door in the basement, pick up the red keycard, and disable the power .

Civillian-Button-Payday-3

Run back upstairs and grab the civilian we prepared earlier. Shove them into the button so you can use the keycard to open the vault.

Jewel-Payday-3-Dirty-Ice

Lockpick the glass case, collect the rare stone, and load it into the van. Collect the jewelry you need to complete the heist and make your escape. Told you it was quick.

Rinse and repeat until you have the XP needed to purchase your weapon upgrade or skill. You’ll notice your runs become faster each time (provided you can actually get into the game again).

Fastest Way to Earn Infamy XP/IP in Payday 3

Unfortunately, completing challenges is the only way to earn Infamy in Payday 3. Unlike the Dirty Ice method for weapons and skills, we’ve been unable to find an ultra-fast method to earn Infamy Points (IP). Why not have a go at the Quiet and Smooth challenge for 99 Boxes ?

Discover The Researching Skills In Payday 3

  • by Sasa Dhungana
  • September 24, 2023

Skills play a crucial role in Payday 3. They help develop your character stats in certain abilities.

Skills are what help you in the success of your heist with your preferred method.

This article will discuss how to research and unlock skills in Payday 3 to optimize your character build.

Table of Contents Show

What are skills in payday 3, major skill trees in payday 3, researching and unlocking skills in payday 3, tips for researching skills in payday 3, the bottom line.

Payday 3 has 17 different Skill Trees that contain a total of 105 individual skills.

Each skill tree focuses on improving a certain playstyle such as stealth, combat abilities, hacking skills, or engineering.

Within each tree are nodes that can be unlocked by spending skill points.

The first node in a tree is always free to unlock, while subsequent nodes may require you to unlock the previous node first.

At the end of each tree is a “Mastered” node that provides powerful bonuses but requires you to unlock the entire tree to access it.

Skills take one skill point to unlock with a few exceptions.

You earn skill points by leveling up your character up to level 150 currently.

This means there is a limited number of skills you can unlock.

Therefore, you must choose carefully which trees to focus on to create a specialized build .

Let’s discuss how to begin researching and unlocking skills.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the most useful skill trees based on common playstyles:

search skill payday 3

  • Infiltrator – Focuses on stealth skills like lockpicking, throwing knives, and silent takedowns. Great for ghost play.
  • Hacker – Provides abilities for hacking cameras, radios, and computers. Invaluable for stealth or support roles.
  • Medic – Unlocks doctor bag upgrades, revives, and health regeneration. Essential for any team-based loadout.
  • Gunslinger – Boosts damage, accuracy, and reload speed for pistol weapons. Strong for Dodge builds.
  • Sharpshooter – Increases ranged damage, stability, and ammo pickups for sniper rifles. Effective at range.
  • Enforcer – Grants armor, damage reduction, and shotgun buffs. Well-suited for tank-style close combat.
  • Engineer – Offers throwable upgrades, deployable turrets, and repair tools. Provides utility and area control.
  • Tactician – Focuses on team buffs, marking enemies, and consumable upgrades. Excellent support-oriented tree.

Experimenting with combinations of trees can create hybrid builds.

For example, pairing Infiltrator with Hacker makes a great stealth-focused foundation.

Understanding the core trees will help optimize your skills for any situation.

The first step to accessing skills is researching the skill trees.

This can be done automatically in the background as you complete missions and gain experience.

You do not need to spend any skill points to research trees.

Alternatively, you can manually research trees one at a time from the skills menu.

Once a tree is researched, you will see its name and be able to spend one skill point to unlock the first node.

Subsequent nodes can then be unlocked in order.

It’s a good idea to fully research one tree before moving to another to see the full layout and benefits.

research skills payday 3

Remember that to continue gaining experience for a tree, you must have at least one point invested in it.

This allows you to progress multiple trees simultaneously over time.

You can also refund all spent points to re-spec your build as needed.

Here are some tips for efficiently researching skills in Payday 3:

  • Focus on one tree at a time to fully understand its synergies before moving on.
  • Prioritize trees that suit your preferred playstyle such as stealth, combat, or support roles.
  • Consider unlocking skills that provide utility like camera hacking, before damage boosts.
  • Check the mastered nodes to ensure trees fit your long-term goals.
  • Research passively during missions for optimal skill point usage later.
  • Re-spec often early on to test different builds cheaply before committing.
  • Consult online guides and the Payday 3 wiki to evaluate all tree options.
  • Unlock at least one node in multiple trees to gain experience across them.

Following these tips will help you unlock beneficial skills strategically and avoid wasting points on underpowered abilities.

A properly researched skills loadout is crucial for succeeding in Payday 3’s challenging heists.

Unlocking beneficial passive abilities, deployable weapon buffs, and playstyle-enhancing perks allows you to customize your character to your playstyle.

Understanding each tree fully and strategically investing points allows you to create a specialized build.

With the right skills, you’ll be ready to take on any mission as the ultimate criminal mastermind.

Happy Heisting!

Skills are special abilities that enhance your character’s performance in various aspects of the game, such as stealth, combat, hacking, or engineering. There are 17 different skill trees in Payday 3, each containing a total of 105 individual skills. Each skill tree focuses on a specific theme or playstyle, and has a “ Mastered ” node at the end that provides powerful bonuses.

To unlock skills, you need to spend skill points, which you earn by leveling up your character. You can level up your character up to level 150 currently, which means you have a limited number of skill points to spend. Therefore, you need to choose wisely which skills to unlock, and which skill trees to focus on.

How to Research Skills in Payday 3?

researching skills

Before you can unlock skills, you need to research them first. Researching skills is done automatically after completing heists. To start researching skills tree, you need to select it from the skill tree window or highlight it and press R. You can only research one skill tree at a time, and it will take some time to complete depending on the difficulty of the heist.

Once you finish researching a skill tree, you can unlock the first node for free. The first node is usually a passive skill that provides a general boost to your character. To unlock the subsequent nodes, you need to unlock the previous node first, and spend one skill point per node. Some nodes may have multiple levels, which require more skill points to fully upgrade.

The last node in each skill tree is the “ Mastered ” node, which requires you to unlock all the other nodes in the tree first. The “ Mastered ” node provides a significant bonus that can greatly enhance your playstyle. For example, the “ Mastered ” node in the Infiltrator tree allows you to perform instant takedowns on alerted enemies. The skill trees you choose to focus on depend largely on your preferred playstyle and role in your team. However, some skill trees are more useful than others in certain situations. Here are some of the most popular skill trees based on common playstyles:

  • Infiltrator: This skill tree focuses on stealth skills like lockpicking, throwing knives, and silent takedowns. It is great for players who prefer to avoid detection and complete heists quietly.
  • Hacker: This skill tree provides abilities for hacking cameras, radios, and computers. It is invaluable for players who want to disable security systems and access valuable information.
  • Sharpshooter: This skill tree increases ranged damage, stability, and ammo pickups for sniper rifles. It is effective for players who like to take out enemies from afar.
  • Enforcer: This skill tree grants armor, damage reduction, and shotgun buffs. It is well-suited for players who like to use tank-style close combat builds.
  • Engineer: This skill tree offers throwable upgrades, deployable turrets, and repair tools. It provides utility and area control for players who like to use gadgets and traps.
  • Tactician: This skill tree focuses on team buffs, marking enemies, and consumable upgrades. It is excellent for players who want to provide support and coordination for their team.
  • Medic: This skill tree unlocks doctor bag upgrades, revives, and health regeneration. It is essential for players who want to support their teammates and keep them alive.
  • Gunslinger: This skill tree boosts damage, accuracy, and reload speed for pistol weapons. It is strong for players who like to use dodge builds and move fast.

You can also experiment with combinations of skill trees to create hybrid builds that suit your needs. For example, pairing Infiltrator with Hacker makes a great stealth-focused build that can bypass security systems and perform silent kills.

The third step to improving your researching skills in Payday 3 is to know how to keep improving them over time. Researching is not a one-time activity; it is an ongoing process that requires constant learning and updating. Here are some tips on how to improve your researching skills over time:

Best Skills for Stealth Build in Payday 3. Heist like a ninja.

Google News

Are you building up your ninja loadout and looking to pick the best skills for a stealth build in Payday 3? Our guide can help you by highlighting the skills to look out for.

There are many ways to approach heists in Payday 3 . You can go in all guns blazing, take advantage of hostages, mix up the two, or go full stealth mode, to name but a few. Arguably, the stealthy way of doing things is the most complex and ultimately satisfying way to play the game. However, there is a lot to keep track of and many dangers threatening to expose you. A good loadout of skills can vastly improve your chances of success. For that reason, we’re going to offer our suggestions for the best stealth build skills to add to your Payday 3 loadout.

Best Skills for a Stealth Build Loadout in Payday 3

For a stealthy approach to the game, we recommend picking skills that help you navigate the private and restricted areas during heists . This includes skills that accentuate movement, obfuscate, manipulate tech, and focus on silent takedowns. Make sure to get XP to unlock as many skill points as you can and prioritize the following skills for research.

This loadout of skills uses 21 skill points for 20 skills. Note that you’ll want to have Infiltrator Aced with that extra point. Any extra skill points that you get over this number can be put at your discretion.

The selected array of skills provides you with the best tools for a stealthy approach to heists. This loadout relies on using RUSH for extra movement speed and manoeuvrability. That is why we dip into Escapist as well, to get an easy way to trigger RUSH when no other sources are nearby. It also relies heavily on hacking as the best way to control the playing field through tech. Speaking of control, takedowns and intimidation are your fall-back solutions when situations threaten to escalate.

In terms of gearing up with this skill loadout, consider taking the following along with you:

  • Armor Lining: Pick Standard Lining for the biggest move speed boost.
  • Weapons: Equip both of your weapons with silencer mods.
  • Throwables: Throwing knives are the best pick for stealth approach.
  • Tools: Microcam or Motion Sensor. They provide the best utility, though you can also consider an ECM Jammer for some heists.

With such a stealth-focused loadout and some practice, you’ll become a veritable ninja of Payday 3. Of course, that requires your crew to play with a similar approach, otherwise you’ll find yourself in an unsavoury position pretty fast.

Payday 3: Best Skills For Support Build

  • In Payday 3 , playing as a support character is essential due to the challenging enemy AI and specialized units.
  • The Medic skill tree offers faster reviving, extra charges for Medic Bags, and damage reduction while reviving teammates.
  • The Ammo Specialist skill tree increases ammo capacity, provides extra charges for Ammo Bags, and grants damage bonuses with EDGE.

When playing with multiple people, sometimes it benefits if someone is the support character. In Payday 3 , the enemy AI is more challenging, and their specialized units offer far greater difficulty than in previous games. It’s never been more essential for a support class than in Payday 3 , and players can find a great many skills that will benefit both themselves and their team to ensure a smooth heist, even if there’s plenty of killing involved.

RELATED: Payday 3: How Many Heists Are There?

With the right support build in Payday 3 , players might be able to cheat death and slow down the inevitability of entering custody . Players will be able to help their teammates by providing ammo, health, and armor, as long as they bring to the table the right skills to get the job done and ensure that everyone can get their payday.

Medic (ACED)

BASIC – You revive teammates 20% faster. Medic Bags you deploy have 2 additional charges.

ACED – When you start reviving a teammate, you gain GRIT. As long as you have GRIT, you take 40% less damage when reviving a teammate.

If things are going south, players are bound to need the help of a medic. Thanks to the Medic skill, players can revive enemies 20% faster, which is a great benefit considering that enemies aren’t just going to stop shooting the player to let them revive their friend. Speed and time are everything in Payday 3 , so the faster their friend is up, the better for everyone. (other than the police.) Players also get 2 additional charges to their Medic Bag, allowing health to flow for all.

With the Aced version of this skill, players can start reviving a teammate to gain GRIT. GRIT will allow players to take 10% less damage for a while, and if players are reviving another whilst GRIT is active, they will take a further 40% reduction to damage, meaning they are reducing their damage input greatly as they put aside their best weapons to revive and save a life.

Extra Charge

Medic Bags you deploy have 2 additional charges.

Following into the Medic skill tree, Extra Charge is the third skill players will unlock. It doesn’t provide any benefits other than the fact that the Medic Bag that players bring to the battle will have 2 additional charges. Yet, combined with the Medic skill that is equipped by default in order to have Extra Charge, players will be able to provide some great healing effects.

RELATED: Payday 3: Crossplay and Crossprogression Explained

Extra Charge will allow players to use healing items up to 6 times in one Medic Bag, which is great for the Dallas players out there, as that heister seems infinitely hungry for a Medic Bag.

Combat Medic

If you have GRIT, successfully reviving your teammate will give both you and that teammate damage immunity for 5 seconds.

Combat Medic is the fourth skill in the Medic tree, and it’s perhaps one of the best. Players can gain GRIT by reviving their allies, and now with the Combat Medic perk, this GRIT will be converted to give the player and their revived teammate an immunity of 5 seconds against all damage, perfect for those with a shotgun lust.

This is great for players on the move and stuck out in the open, as players will have 5 seconds to ignore all damage sources, and they can either use that to run to cover, escape, or continue fighting against those that dare oppose the heisters of New York City.

Ammo Specialist

BASIC – Your reserve ammo capacity is increased by 20%. Ammo bags you deploy have 2 additional charges.

ACED – Whenever you pick up ammo, if your current weapon’s magazine is full, you gain EDGE if you don’t have it.

Another starting skill tree, Ammo Specialist is not only great for keeping the ammo count flowing, but it also gives players 2 additional charges to their deployed Ammo Bags. Support doesn’t just entail health, and players can use Ammo Specialist to make sure that their team is well-kitted with enough ammo for the entire army , as they will be bound to run dry on bullets without an Ammo Specialist.

RELATED: Payday 3: How To Farm XP Fast

If players decide to Ace this skill, then they can gain EDGE if they pick up ammo from their dead enemies, but only if their weapon’s magazine is full. This doesn’t benefit the team much, but the fact that they can deal an extra 10% damage with EDGE does make it worth it in some instances.

BASIC – Increase the regeneration speed of your armor chunks by 20%. Your armor bag has 2 additional charges.

ACED – Whenever one of your armor chunks breaks, gain or refresh GRIT.

Sometimes the support character has to stay the safest, and Tank can allow just that, due to the fact that their armor will regenerate 20% quicker than their allies. Players can also bring Armor Bags into the fight, which will have 2 additional charges, greatly benefiting teammates that decide they are fresh out of armor chunks and are in dire need of a refill outside of stealth.

If players Ace this ability, they can gain GRIT, ensuring 10% less damage, but only if an armor chunk has broken. Tank can be great to add an extra layer of defense on players who are trying to revive their allies. With all that armor and GRIT, players will essentially be a walking and healing tank.
