Heisman Trophy ceremony 2023: Jayden Daniels leads finalists, live stream, watch online, TV channel

The heisman trophy will be awarded on saturday night with four finalists in attendance.

daniels-heisman-1.jpg

The most prestigious individual award in college football will be handed out Saturday night during the 2023 Heisman Trophy ceremony. Four finalists all turned in spectacular seasons to earn invitations to this year's event. LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels  stands as the consensus favorite, riding the wave of a monster season as a runner and passer. If he wins, it would be the fourth time since 2007 a Heisman winner came from a team with three regular-season losses.

Oregon  quarterback  Bo Nix ,  Washington  quarterback  Michael Penix Jr . and  Ohio State  wide receiver  Marvin Harrison Jr . are also in contention with the foursome taking center stage at the Lincoln Center in New York City Saturday night.

Penix captured the Maxwell Award  Friday night, given annually to the best player in college football. He is the lone finalist participating in the College Football Playoff. Penix led the No. 2 Huskies to a 13-0 record and a Pac-12 title win over Oregon.

Six of the last seven Heisman winners have been quarterbacks, including USC quarterback Caleb Williams , who took home the award in 2022. The 2023 Heisman Trophy ceremony will begin at 8 p.m. ET and air on ESPN. It can also be streamed live on  fuboTV  (Try for free).

You can see results from our Heisman straw poll here.

Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU:  Daniels is the first player to throw for at least 12,000 yards and rush for at least 3,000 yards in a career that started at Arizona State and ended in the SEC at LSU. He is looking to join Joe Burrow and 1959 winner Billy Cannon as the third Tigers player to take home the Heisman. Daniels actually has more total yards, touchdowns and a better passer rating than Burrow did through 12 games of his blistering 2019 campaign. Daniels is is just the fifth quarterback in college football history to score 50 or more touchdowns, the four who preceded him all won the Heisman.

Michael Penix Jr., QB, Washington: Penix's season hit a bit of a statistical lull-- he threw for 300 or more yards in just three of the Huskies' final seven games -- but he still threw for 4,218 yards (most in FBS) and 33 touchdowns. Penix started the year as one of the favorites to win the award and even had a Heisman moment when he led Washington to a comeback victory over Oregon -- first of two wins over the Ducks. He is trying to become the first Heisman winner in program history.

Bo Nix, QB, Oregon: Nix certainly has the stats to backup his Heisman case. The former Auburn quarterback enjoyed the best season of his career in 2023 by passing for 4,145 yards and 40 touchdowns while only throwing three interceptions. The most impressive of his video game-like numbers is his completion percentage (77.2%) which ranked No. 1 amongst all FBS quarterbacks. These numbers came despite the fact that Nix routinely sat out games late in the second half due as Oregon compiled insurmountable leads against most of its opponents. He is the fourth Heisman finalist in school history. Marcus Mariota is the only Duck to win the award.

Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, Ohio State: The lone non-quarterback on the list has been touted as one of the greatest wide receiver prospects in a generation. Harrison is the second Ohio State player to win the Biletnikoff Award, which honors the nation's most outstanding receiver. Despite opposing defenses building entire game plans around stopping Harrison, he finished the season with 67 catches for 1,211 yards and 14 touchdowns. He first Buckeye to record two separate 1,000 yard receiving seasons in his career. Ohio State has produced seven previous Heisman winners, tied for first in FBS.

How to watch the 2023 Heisman Trophy ceremony

Jayden daniels, michael penix jr., bo nix and marvin harrison jr. are the finalists for the award, by eric mullin • published december 4, 2023 • updated on december 4, 2023 at 9:13 pm.

College football 's most exclusive club is about to add a new member .

The 2023 Heisman Trophy will be awarded at a ceremony in New York City on Saturday night. And one of LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr., Oregon quarterback Bo Nix or Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. will head home with the sport's most prestigious honor .

Daniels is the betting favorite to be named college football's most outstanding player after a stellar second season with the Tigers. The senior quarterback tied with Nix for the most passing touchdowns in the nation (40) and ranked third in passing yards (3,812) -- all while boasting a 72.2 completion percentage and throwing just four picks. And Daniels also rushed for 1,134 yards, which were the most of any quarterback, and 10 scores as No. 13 LSU went 9-3.

Penix, meanwhile, made a compelling Heisman case by helping No. 3 Washington become the first Pac-12 team ever to enter bowl season at a perfect 13-0 mark. The senior signal-caller led the nation in passing yards (4,218) and was tied for third in touchdown passes (33) while sporting a 65.9 completion percentage and throwing nine picks.

Nix was the Heisman betting favorite before the Ducks fell to Washington in the thrilling (and likely final) Pac-12 Championship Game. The senior Ducks quarterback led the nation in completion percentage (77.2), was tied with Daniels for the most touchdown passes (40) and ranked second behind Penix in passing yards (4,145). And he was only picked off just three times. Nix and the No. 8 Ducks lost two games, both of which were to Penix and the Huskies.

Finally, Harrison is looking to become just the fifth wide receiver to earn the Heisman Trophy. The junior wideout recorded 67 receptions for 1,211 yards and 14 touchdowns with the No. 7 Buckeyes. Harrison ranked ninth in the nation in receiving yards and was tied for second in touchdown catches.

The end of conference championship weekend sparks a new question for fans in the college football world: Who will win the Heisman Trophy for the 2023 season?

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels is the current favorite to come away with the trophy after throwing 40 touchdowns and just four interceptions this season, earning SEC Offensive Player of the Year honors from numerous voting bodies, including the USA TODAY Network , the Associated Press and the conference itself . He has also won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, given annually to the nation's top upperclassman quarterback.

However, three other finalists have put up strong cases to be considered for the Heisman Trophy as well.

Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. led his Huskies to an undefeated season and the No. 2 seed for the College Football Playoff. Oregon quarterback Bo Nix threw 40 touchdowns and three interceptions and earned the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year award. Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. grabbed 15 touchdowns and swung the momentum of several games into the Buckeyes' favor from the receiver position.

The closest Heisman races: How votes broke down in years with slimmest margins

12 heisman trophy awards have been decided by less than 100 points.

heisman presentation 2023

The 2023 Heisman Trophy ceremony presentation starts at 8 p.m. ET Saturday on ESPN. Four finalists - quarterbacks Jayden Daniels ( LSU ), Bo Nix ( Oregon ), and Michael Penix Jr. ( Washington ) as well as Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. - will be at the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Appel Room in New York City for the ceremony .

It's been an exciting season for the Heisman Trophy in 2023. Heisman odds and rankings have fluctuated at the top with Daniels , Nix , Penix Jr. , and defending Heisman winner Caleb Williams all taking turns as the favorite for college football's highest individual award.

Heisman odds: How finalists stack up ahead of Saturday's trophy ceremony

Heisman voting closed on Monday night and, given how much the favorite has changed in 2023, it could be a close contest. Here's a look at some of the closest Heisman Trophy races in recent history as well as all-time, with voting records from Sports Reference :

Closest Heisman Trophy races of the last decade

In the last decade, there haven't been many close Heisman Trophy contests. The winners won by at least 600 points in eight of the last 10 years. Since 2013, the Heisman Trophy winner's taken the award by an average of 957 points over the runner-up.

The biggest margin of victory goes to Joe Burrow in 2019. The LSU quarterback set the single-season total yards record en route to a national championship and won the Heisman Trophy by a 1,846-point margin over Oklahoma 's Jalen Hurts .

The closest Heisman Trophy race of the last decade happened in 2015 between two future NFL All-Pro running backs. Alabama 's Derrick Henry won by 293 points over Stanford 's Christian McCaffrey . Another relatively tight race happened in 2018, when Oklahoma's Kyler Murray won by 296 points over Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa .

2023 Heisman candidates: Trophy finalists announced, with three of four being quarterbacks

Closest Heisman Trophy races since 2000

If you look beyond the past decade, the races get closer. The average margin of victory goes down to 660 points when looking at Heisman Trophy winners since 2000. Five races were decided by less than 200 points, all between 2000 and 2009.

In 2009, the Heisman Trophy was a very close contest. The top three candidates - Alabama running back Mark Ingram, Stanford running back Toby Gerhart, and Texas quarterback Colt McCoy - were separated by just 159 points. Ingram ended up the winner by 28 points that year thanks to five more first-place votes and 11 more second-place votes than Gerhart.

The 2000s started off with consecutive close Heisman Trophy contests. Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke won in 2000 by just 76 points over Oklahoma quarterback Josh Heupel and a year later Nebraska quarterback Eric Crouch won the Heisman Trophy by 62 points over Florida quarterback Rex Grossman.

Heisman powerhouses: Which college has won the most Heisman trophies? It's a four-way tie.

Closest Heisman Trophy races of all-time

Ingram's win over Gerhart in 2009 is the closest Heisman Trophy vote of all-time. That point margin broke the record set by the 1985 Heisman Trophy race, which saw Auburn running back Bo Jackson win by just 45 points over Iowa quarterback Chuck Long.

Prior to 2000, nine Heisman Trophy awards were decided by less than 100 points, 1985 included. Here are the other eight:

  • 1962: Oregon State quarterback Terry Baker won by 89 points over LSU running back Jerry Stovall
  • 1978: Oklahoma running back Billy Sims won by 77 points over Penn State quarterback Chuck Fusina
  • 1964: Notre Dame quarterback John Huarte won by 74 points over Tulsa quarterback Jerry Rhome
  • 1956: Notre Dame quarterback Paul Hornung won by 72 points over Tennessee running back Johnny Majors
  • 1989: Houston quarterback Andre Ware won by 70 points over Indiana running back Anthony Thompson
  • 1953: Notre Dame quarterback Johnny Lattner won by 56 points over Minnesota running back Paul Giel
  • 1935: Chicago running back Jay Berwanger won the first Heisman Trophy - called the "Downtown Athletic Club Trophy" at the time - by 55 points over Army running back Monk Meyer
  • 1961: Syracuse running back Ernie Davis won by 53 points over Ohio State running back Bob Ferguson

2023 Heisman Tracker

A season-long look at ESPN's voting for college football's most coveted award

It's all over but the countin'.

After years of moaning over meh Heisman Trophy races, some began to question the relevance of an 88-year-old award "to the most outstanding player in college football" in this ever-changing world of NIL, the transfer portal and an impatient rush toward becoming NFL 2.0.

But look at that bronzed New Yorker, spending this entire 2023 season stiff-arming all that chatter about his demise. How? By joining forces with a roster of young teammates located coast-to-coast and conference-to-conference, throwing and running and catching footballs at a rate so rapid that it has had our Heisman Tracker graphic climbing and falling like the Griswolds on the Screaming Mimi.

From defending Heisman winner Caleb Williams and a sudden gaggle of would-be Pac-12 successors to SEC and Big Ten superstars, most of whom kept their teams in the CFP scrum all season long, who among them do our ESPN panelists believe will be having their photo taken onstage in Manhattan? We asked. They answered. Just as we've done every month of this season. Now you can see our final result while we wait for the final final result on Saturday night (8 p.m. ET, ESPN).

Points awarded: 5 for first-place votes, 4 for second, 3 for third, 2 for fourth and 1 for fifth. Odds by ESPN BET.

heisman presentation 2023

Jayden Daniels

If you were wondering why we went with "most of whom kept their teams in the CFP scrum all season long," it's because the one member of this list who wasn't on a national title contender all the way into the final weekend of the regular season was Daniels, leading the 9-3 Tigers who finished third in the SEC West. But when you throw for 3,812 yards and 40 TDs while also rushing for 1,134 yards and another 10 scores, then your status is -- what was it that Heisman inscription says? Most outstanding player? -- pretty outstanding. In the three games LSU lost -- FSU, Ole Miss and Bama -- he still averaged 413 yards of total offense and added nine TDs, and this was even after exiting the Alabama game early because of injury. "We ran drills all week, getting spies ready for Jayden Daniels," Nick Saban said following the Tide's win, though they surrendered 116 yards rushing to the senior before he was forced to the sidelines early in the fourth quarter. "But when the spies track him, get to him, physically grab him but then can't bring him down and he just keeps running, that's an outstanding football player." ESPN points awarded: 66

Michael Penix Jr.

QB, Washington

This Hoosier-turned-Husky managed to turn the entire second half of the season into his own personal escape room challenge. Beginning with Washington's 31-21 win over Arizona in Week 5, all but one of the team's past nine victories have been by single-digit margins, and the only game that wasn't was won by only 10, after entering the fourth quarter tied with USC and Caleb Williams. Penix jumped into our midseason Tracker lead after outlasting Oregon and Bo Nix in a Week 7 Heisman showdown, but that momentum eroded via all those skin-of-the-wet-dog-nose November wins, as did America's and (Las Vegas's) confidence that Big Penix Energy (thanks again for that, Desmond Howard) could beat the Ducks again in the Pac-12 title game. Penix responded with 319 yards passing and a TD for good measure, enough to boost UW into the CFP and send their QB to NYC. But in the eyes of our Heisman Tracker contributors, despite four first-place votes, he'll fall just short of bringing back Washington's first stiff-armed reward, instead joining real-life Incredible Hulk Steve Emtman as their alma mater's only Heisman finalists. It is very easy to root for Nix, who arrived at Auburn in 2019 as a Mr. Alabama high school star and legacy QB (son of former Tiger Patrick Nix). He shouldered the load of both promise and expectations on the Plains, only to become a War Eagle social media pinata and transferred 2,600 miles away to Oregon. His love of the game and of the Ducks was apparent to anyone who watched the Pac-12 championship as he wept during the closing seconds of his team's second loss to Washington, their only two L's of 2023. His 4,145 passing yards are second in the nation behind Penix, and his 40 TD passes are tied for tops in FBS with Daniels. At the end of October, he was tied for fourth in this poll with FSU's Jordan Travis and closed out the regular season sitting second in this poll, only three points behind Daniels. But his second head-to-head defeat to Penix -- in which he had three TD passes and a dramatic run that set up the Ducks' final score -- proved to be too much to overcome in this race in the eyes of our voters, though he did top two of our 15 ballots. Jalen Milroe

QB, Alabama

We wanted to make a big deal out of the fact that Daniels wasn't even on this list in September, but that climb feels quaint compared to this one. Just two weeks ago, Milroe didn't receive a single vote from our panel, followed by only one fifth-place vote heading into the SEC title game against Georgia. Even that felt like little more than a nice attaboy for pulling off the fourth-and-31 "Gravedigger" miracle in the Iron Bowl. Now, after throwing a pair of TD passes to upset top-ranked Georgia in Atlanta, the Alabama sophomore is solidly in our top four and seemingly in position to enter 2024 as an early Heisman favorite. That "seemingly" will become "surefire" if he manages to win the Rose Bowl over another No. 1 in Michigan and helps Saban seize his eighth natty via a game played in Houston, which also happens to be Milroe's hometown. Not bad for a guy who was benched after two weeks because his coaches believed he needed an attitude adjustment. That tack appears to have worked. It's as if Nick Saban knows how to coach football. Marvin Harrison Jr.

WR, Ohio State

The lone non-QB to make our Heisman Tracker cut (sorry, Rome Odunze and Ollie Gordon) was, like Daniels, forced to sit at home and watch the other three on this list play in conference championship games. After starting autumn on everyone's preseason Heisman watch lists, the anchor of the Buckeyes' O disappeared for a while but rematerialized in October and never went away again. Even in the heartbreaking loss to Michigan in The Game, Harrison hauled in five catches for 118 yards and a crucial fourth-quarter TD that cut the Wolverines' lead to three. Harrison's entire Ohio State career has been about what could have been, from OSU's near-CFP win over Georgia in 2022 to his 0-3 record against Michigan to that rival also denying him even a Big Ten division title. Now, it would appear, you can add a close-but-not-enough Heisman campaign to that list. Is it too late to try and convince you to come back for one more try at all of the above, Marv? Pretty please? Looking ahead

As Marvin Harrison Jr. mulls over that last request, we now look ahead to the Heisman Trophy race of 2024. Will Jalen Milroe indeed be the favorite to bring Bama its fifth Heisman since 2009 after going 0-for-72? Will Michigan's J.J. McCarthy, who spent a huge chunk of this season on the Tracker, return to Ann Arbor with an eye on joining Desmond Howard, Charles Woodson and Tom Harmon in the Blue Heisman club? Will Dillon Gabriel make a Heisman run from what is expected to be his third FBS school? Or will someone we haven't even thought of be making a climb up our fancy digital Heisman Tracker hill one year from now? If 2023 has taught us anything, it's that we have no idea what might happen. Reports of the bronze footballer's demise were most definitely exaggerated. Not only is Mr. Heisman not outdated, he would appear to be just getting started.

Best of the Rest: Quinn Ewers, QB, Texas; Carson Beck, QB, Georgia; Rome Odunze, WR, Washington; Jordan Travis, QB, Florida State

How to watch Heisman Trophy Presentation on TV, date, finalists, list of winners

T he highest individual honor a college football player can win is the Heisman Trophy. There have been 86 Heisman winners throughout college football’s history, and the 2023 crop of finalists is just as good as any. In this article, we will explain how you can watch one of the four finalists be crowned as the best player in college football. We will also look at the history of the award and list who has won the Heisman Trophy each year.

2023 Heisman Trophy finalists

On Dec. 4, the four Heisman Trophy finalists were revealed. Per usual, the quarterback position dominated the vote, and rightfully so, too. Not only is the quarterback position the most important in football but there were several great QBs in college football this season. There were even a few deserving quarterbacks who didn’t make the final cut. In addition to the three quarterbacks who are Heisman finalists, there is also one receiver. The four Heisman finalists are listed below. All four players made our preseason player rankings list, and all four exceeded expectations. Additionally, three of the four candidates started their careers elsewhere before having a Heisman-caliber season this year.

Bo Nix , quarterback, Oregon

2023 stats: 77.2 completion percentage, 4,145 passing yards, 40 passing touchdowns, three interceptions, six rushing touchdowns

Before his loss in the Pac-12 Championship, Bo Nix likely would have won the Heisman Trophy. The former Auburn quarterback, in his fifth year as a college starter (second at Oregon), was the nation’s best quarterback for much of the season. Despite his loss in the Pac-12, Nix still has a great chance to win the Heisman. He combined both accuracy and volume, as he led the nation in both completions (336)  and completion percentage. In fact, his 77.2 percent completion rate is the second-best figure ever .

Marcus Mariota is the only Oregon player to ever be handed the Heisman Trophy. Nix’s intelligence and accuracy put him in the position to potentially be the second player with that distinction.

Marvin Harrison Jr., wide receiver, Ohio State

2023 stats: 67 receptions, 1,211 receiving yards, 15 total touchdowns, 18.1 yards per reception

The only non-quarterback to be named a Heisman finalist this year, Marvin Harrison Jr. is arguably the most talented player in the nation. Harrison’s 14 receiving touchdowns were the second most in the country, and he led the Big Ten in virtually every statistical category. Harrison is an incredible route runner, is a big enough body that he can catch jump ball opportunities, is incredible at navigating the sidelines, excels in the red zone, and has good speed. He truly is a perfect prospect, but his position will probably prevent him from winning the Heisman.

If he wins, Harrison Jr. would become the eighth Ohio State Heisman Trophy winner, which would give the school the most Heisman winners of any school in college football (USC has eight players who have won the award, but Reggie Bush’s Heisman was vacated). He would also become only the fifth receiver to win the award. The son of former NFL receiver Marvin Harrison Sr., the younger Harrison might not have been the best receiver this year from a statistical standpoint, but he played with a mediocre quarterback, and the offense heavily relied on their top pass catcher.

Jayden Daniels, quarterback, LSU

2023 stats: 72.2 completion percentage, 3,812 passing yards, 40 passing touchdowns, four interceptions, 1,134 rushing yards, 10 rushing touchdowns

Everybody knew Jayden Daniels was good, but nobody expected him to be this good. The former Arizona State and current LSU quarterback was unstoppable both on his feet and when throwing the football. Daniels is a big play waiting to happen. Not only does he thrive when extending plays and scrambling, but he also led the nation in passing yards per attempt (11.7). Daniels and Nix tied for the lead in passing touchdowns. He led the nation with a QBR of 95.7 as well.

Daniels has a slight edge and is the odds-on favorite to win the Heisman because he also adds so much as a running threat. The quarterback became the first player in FBS history to throw for 350 yards and rush for 200 yards in the same game. He added 1,134 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground to his already impressive statistical output as a passer. Joe Burrow most recently won the Heisman as a Tiger, but Billy Cannon also won the award in 1959.

Michael Penix Jr., quarterback, Washington

2023 stats: 65.7 completion percentage, 4,218 passing yards, 33 passing touchdowns, nine interceptions, three rushing touchdowns

Like both Nix and Daniels, Penix Jr. has spent the last two years of his long collegiate career on a team different from where he started. The former Indiana player played in his sixth season of college football this year. He led Washington to an undefeated record and a berth in the College Football Playoff, and his most recent victory was over Oregon and Heisman contender Bo Nix. In fact, Oregon’s only other loss in the season was to Penix Jr. and Washington.

Penix Jr. doesn’t add much with his legs, but he torched defenses with his arm all season. The quarterback led the nation in passing yards. He looks to be the first Washington player to ever win the Heisman, but the odds are against him because of his lack of rushing ability and his relatively high number of interceptions. Penix Jr. famously said after his Pac-12 win that, “They tried to write us off, but we ain’t write back.” The same mindset stands true for his Heisman outlook.

2024 heisman watch: where the top contenders rank after the spring games, share this article.

The spring games have all come and gone, and the transfer portal has settled as the biggest names in college football head into summer ready to hone their talents in private — social media posts notwithstanding — before returning to campus for training camp in a few months.

What better time than to take stock of the 2024 Heisman Trophy race before it officially opens up.

After LSU’s Jayden Daniels claimed the 2023 Heisman in December, there were two clear favorites to succeed him next winter, Georgia quarterback Carson Beck and Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers. Here’s what the odds looked like on January 22:

2024 Heisman odds at @FDSportsbook : Quinn Ewers +750 Carson Beck +750 Dillon Gabriel 10-1 Will Howard 12-1 Jalen Milroe 12-1 Nico Iamaleava 15-1 Garrett Nussmeier 18-1 Jackson Arnold 18-1 Jaxson Dart 18-1 — Ben Fawkes (@BFawkes22) January 22, 2024

The two are still at the top of the board for oddsmakers, but the numbers have shifted quite a bit.

Here’s a look at where the favorites rank as well as some honorable mentions who may be worth buying while oddsmakers continue to sleep on their chances.

All odds via FanDuel Sportsbook

Honorable Mention: Oklahoma State RB Ollie Gordon II

heisman presentation 2023

Oklahoma State’s Ollie Gordon II (0) celebrates a Alan Bowman (7) touchdown in the first half during a Bedlam college football game between the Oklahoma State University Cowboys (OSU) and the University of Oklahoma Sooners (OU) at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Okla., Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023.

Current Odds: +15000

The nation’s best running back is returning to Stillwater after posting a Division I-best 1,732 yards on 285 carries with 21 touchdowns. Averaging 6.1 yards per carry in the Big 12 is nothing to scoff at, which makes these odds a bit suspect.

If Gordon can carry the Cowboys back to the Big 12 title game, he’ll have a clear shot at a Heisman.

Honorable Mention: Michigan QB Alex Orji

heisman presentation 2023

Oct 21, 2023; East Lansing, Michigan, USA; Michigan Wolverines quarterback Alex Orji (10) scores at the end of the game while dragging Michigan State Spartans linebacker Sam Edwards (35) with him at Spartan Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Dale Young-USA TODAY Sports

Current Odds: +10000

The battle to replace J.J. McCarthy as Michigan’s starting quarterback will seemingly come down to Alex Orji, Jayden Denegal, Jack Tuttle and Davis Warren for first-year head coach Sherrone Moore, but let’s not forget that Orji was already drawing plenty or praise as a backup last year — particularly when he was mimicking Alabama’s Jalen Milroe on the scout team ahead of the Rose Bowl.

“The other day in practice, he was doing scout team, had pressure in his face and then, off his back foot, threw the ball 68 yards in the air,” Michigan quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell told MLive . “You’re like, ‘Holy cow.’ That’s his arm talent. We do all these opportunity scrimmages, so him being able to use a stiff arm and exploding through the hole. Then in the Ohio State game, he is popping off a 20-yard run. That stuff speaks for itself, and the fans will see it when he gets an opportunity to get out there. He is a so-called freak.”

Honorable Mention: Colorado WR/CB Travis Hunter

heisman presentation 2023

Apr 27, 2024; Boulder, CO, USA; Colorado Buffaloes cornerback Travis Hunter (12) warms up before a spring game event at Folsom Field. Mandatory Credit: Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Current Odds: +6500

A lot depends on what happens with Colorado’s season — going 4-8 again won’t help anyone win a Heisman — but Hunter’s talent on both sides of the ball makes him a unique threat.

We’ll see what happens with Deion Sanders’ experiment this year, but no one can deny Hunter is a bona fide star.

8. Miami (FL) QB Cameron Ward

heisman presentation 2023

Nov 11, 2023; Berkeley, California, USA; Washington State Cougars quarterback Cameron Ward (1) throws a pass against the California Golden Bears during the second quarter at California Memorial Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

Current Odds: +2200

Around Week 7 last year, Ward saw his odds hover at +5000, right alongside Quinn Ewers and Sam Hartman. Now at Miami, he’ll have a new team and new system to show that his talents are more than transferrable.

So far so good as Ward went for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns in the Hurricanes’ spring game.

7. Notre Dame QB Riley Leonard

heisman presentation 2023

Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard (13) who is hurt, dresses and throws some pre-game passes with fellow quarterbacks Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the annual Notre Dame Blue-Gold spring football game at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend.

Current Odds: +2000

Now the starting quarterback at Notre Dame, the former Duke star will have a schedule loaded with elite opponents to prove his case.

An injured ankle kept Leonard from participating in the spring game, but the fact that Notre Dame brought offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock back from LSU — where he helped Daniels win the Heisman — is reason enough for the hype.

6. LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier

heisman presentation 2023

Dec 3, 2022; Atlanta, GA, USA; LSU Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier (13) drops back to pass against the Georgia Bulldogs during the third quarter of the SEC Championship game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Mandatory Credit: John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Current Odds: +1800

Joe Burrow, Jayden Daniels…Garrett Nussmeier?

The QB’s odds haven’t changed since betting opened in January and there probably isn’t too much to go off of yet to justify moving them. Nussmeier went 7-for-7 for 187 yards and two touchdowns in the spring game as the Tigers showcased an ability to really air out the ball. The redshirt junior had two passes of 45+ yards that went for scores in the exhibition.

T5. Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart, Alabama QB Jalen Milroe, Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava

heisman presentation 2023

Nov 4, 2023; Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe (4) scrambles up the field against the LSU Tigers during the second half at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Alabama Crimson Tide defeated the LSU Tigers 42-28. Mandatory Credit: John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Current Odds: +1500

We’ve reached the SEC Takeover portion of the proceedings and there’s already been a little movement. Dart was +1800 in January while Milroe was +1200. Iamaleava was the only player who stayed at +1500.

The pros and cons of each are pretty obvious.

Milroe was among the top contenders for the latter half of the 2023 season, but has a new coach in Kalen DeBoer stepping in for the now-retired Nick Saban. Dart returns to Lane Kiffin’s contenders at Ole Miss, but loses a Heisman-worthy wideout with Quinshon Judkins transferring to Ohio State. Tennessee’s Iamaleava played limited snaps for Tennessee in 2023 and went 28-for-45 with 314 yards, two touchdowns and no picks while rushing for 71 yards and three scores on 20 carries.

4. Ohio State QB Will Howard

heisman presentation 2023

Nov 25, 2023; Manhattan, Kansas, USA; Kansas State Wildcats quarterback Will Howard (18) celebrates a touchdown in the third quarter against the Iowa State Cyclones at Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Scott Sewell-USA TODAY Sports

Current Odds: +1300

A slight decrease for the former Kansas State quarterback who opened at +1300.

That might be due to the fact he hasn’t fully won the starting job yet at Ohio State with Devin Brown still battling for the role.

3. Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel

heisman presentation 2023

Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel throws during warmups ahead of the Oregon Ducks’ Spring Game Saturday, April 27. 2024 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore.

Current Odds: +1000

From UCF to Oklahoma to Oregon, Gabriel keeps moving west and the Heisman clout follows. The presumptive starter will have some slight competition with Dante Moore, but if the former Sooner takes the lead in Dan Lanning’s offense, look for him to put up the type of numbers we saw from Bo Nix last year.

2. Texas QB Quinn Ewers

heisman presentation 2023

Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers (3) throws a pass during the Red River Showdown college football game between the University of Oklahoma (OU) and Texas at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022. Texas won 49-0.

Current Odds: +900

The Arch Manning Era can wait a bit longer.

Ewers has a chance to bring Texas its first Heisman since Ricky Williams in 1998, but he won’t have the benefit of beating up on Big 12 defenses anymore. Now in the SEC, Texas will have to face brutal schedule that starts with a season-opener at Michigan and features a two-week stretch of Oklahoma and Georgia before renewing their rivalry with Texas A&M to close the regular season.

Depending on Ewers’ play, the schedule either helps him or really doesn’t.

1. Georgia QB Carson Beck

heisman presentation 2023

ATHENS, GEORGIA – SEPTEMBER 2: Carson Beck #15 of the Georgia Bulldogs is pressured by Christian Dowell #94 of the Tennessee Martin Skyhawks during the third quarter at Sanford Stadium on September 2, 2023 in Athens, Georgia. (Photo by Todd Kirkland/Getty Images)

Current Odds: +750

Most way-too-early rankings have the Bulldogs on top (yet again), so it makes sense Beck gets the nod as the Heisman favorite. But if you’re thinking of betting on him, you may want to wait a bit. At least until closer to Week 1.

Once the hype machine picks up during training camps, the odds are going to bounce around a bit more. The upside here is we know what Beck can do. We certainly know what Georgia can do. And a schedule that features a pretty soft end to the regular season with three straight home matchups against Tennessee, UMass and Georgia Tech could help Beck pad his stats quite a bit.
