Introduction:  A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information or data. It can store, retrieve, and process data.  Nowadays, a computer can be used to type documents, send an email, play games, and browse the Web. It can also be used to edit or create spreadsheets, presentations, and even videos. But the evolution of this complex system started around 1940 with the First Generation of computers and evolving ever since. 

Computers have evolved significantly over the years, and the history of computers is often divided into generations based on the technology used. Here are the five generations of computers:

  • First Generation (1940s-1950s): The first computers used vacuum tubes for processing and magnetic drums for storage. They were large, expensive, and unreliable.
  • Second Generation (1950s-1960s): The second generation of computers replaced vacuum tubes with transistors, making them smaller, faster, and more reliable. Magnetic core memory was also introduced, which was faster and more reliable than magnetic drums.
  • Third Generation (1960s-1970s): The third generation of computers used integrated circuits, which allowed for even smaller and faster computers. They also introduced magnetic disk storage and operating systems.
  • Fourth Generation (1970s-1980s): The fourth generation of computers saw the introduction of microprocessors, which made personal computers possible. They also introduced graphical user interfaces and networking.
  • Fifth Generation (1980s-Present): The fifth generation of computers is still ongoing, and is focused on artificial intelligence and parallel processing. This generation also saw the development of mobile computing and the internet.

Each generation of computers has built upon the advancements of the previous generation, leading to the computers we use today.

There are five generations of computers.   

  • 1946-1959 is the period of first generation computer.
  • J.P.Eckert and J.W.Mauchy invented the first successful electronic computer called ENIAC, ENIAC stands for “Electronic Numeric Integrated And Calculator”.
  • It made use of vacuum tubes which are the only electronic component available during those days.   
  • These computers could calculate in milliseconds.   
  • These were very big in size, weight was about 30 tones.
  • These computers were based on vacuum tubes.
  • These computers were very costly.
  • It could store only a small amount of information due to the presence of magnetic drums.
  • As the invention of first generation computers involves vacuum tubes, so another disadvantage of these computers was, vacuum tubes require a large cooling system.
  • Very less work efficiency.
  • Limited programming capabilities and punch cards were used to take inputs.
  • Large amount of energy consumption.
  • Not reliable and constant maintenance is required.
  • 1959-1965 is the period of second-generation computer.
  • 3.Second generation computers were based on Transistor instead of vacuum tubes.

  • Due to the presence of transistors instead of vacuum tubes, the size of electron component decreased. This resulted in reducing the size of a computer as compared to first generation computers.
  • Less energy and not produce as much heat as the first generation.

  • Better speed, calculate data in microseconds.
  • Better portability as compared to first generation
  • A cooling system was required.
  • Constant maintenance was required.
  • Only used for specific purposes.
  • 1965-1971 is the period of third generation computer.
  • These computers were based on Integrated circuits.
  • IC was invented by Robert Noyce and Jack Kilby In 1958-1959.
  • IC was a single component containing number of transistors.
  • These computers were cheaper as compared to second-generation computers.
  • They were fast and reliable.
  • Use of IC in the computer provides the small size of the computer.
  • IC not only reduce the size of the computer but it also improves the performance of the computer as compared to previous computers.
  • This generation of computers has big storage capacity.
  • Instead of punch cards, mouse and keyboard are used for input.
  • They used an operating system for better resource management and used the concept of time-sharing and multiple programming.
  • These computers reduce the computational time from microseconds to nanoseconds.
  • IC chips are difficult to maintain.
  • The highly sophisticated technology required for the manufacturing of IC chips.
  • Air conditioning is required.
  • 1971-1980 is the period of fourth generation computer.
  • This technology is based on Microprocessor.
  • A microprocessor is used in a computer for any logical and arithmetic function to be performed in any program.
  • Graphics User Interface (GUI) technology was exploited to offer more comfort to users.
  • Fastest in computation and size get reduced as compared to the previous generation of computer.
  • Heat generated is negligible.
  • Small in size as compared to previous generation computers.
  • Less maintenance is required.
  • All types of high-level language can be used in this type of computers.
  • The Microprocessor design and fabrication are very complex.
  • Air conditioning is required in many cases due to the presence of ICs.
  • Advance technology is required to make the ICs.
  • The period of the fifth generation in 1980-onwards.
  • This generation is based on artificial intelligence.
  • The aim of the fifth generation is to make a device which could respond to natural language input and are capable of learning and self-organization.
  • This generation is based on ULSI(Ultra Large Scale Integration) technology resulting in the production of microprocessor chips having ten million electronic component.
  • It is more reliable and works faster.
  • It is available in different sizes and unique features.
  • It provides computers with more user-friendly interfaces with multimedia features.
  • They need very low-level languages.
  • They may make the human brains dull and doomed.

There are five generations of computers.

  • First generation computers used vacuum tubes.
  • Second generation computers used transistors.
  • Third generation computers used ICs (Integrated Circuits).
  • Microprocessors are used in fourth generation computers.
  • Fifth generation computers are the most modern ones that are commonly used nowadays.

And finally, the sixth generation is AI powered super computers that are emerging and evolving as of today. So, this is not yet an officially and widely accepted category.

1. First Generation Computers – Vacuum Tubes

All those parts of a computer that are tangible physical objects are covered under the term hardware. The hardware includes circuits, computer chips, graphics cards, sound cards, memory (RAM), motherboards, displays, power supplies, cables, keyboards, printers and "mice" input devices.

 There are five main hardware components: 

Input Devices: 

These are devices that are used to enter data/information in the central processing unit. Example- keyboard, mouse, scanner, document reader, barcode reader, optical character reader, magnetic reader etc.

Output Devices: 

These are devices that provide the processed data/information into human-readable form. Example- monitor, printer, speaker, projector etc.

Control Unit: 

The control unit handles the various components of the computer; it reads and interprets (decodes) the instructions for the program, transforming them into control signals that activate other computer parts.

Arithmetic Logic Unit: 

It is capable of performing arithmetical and logical functions. The set of arithmetic operations supported by a specific ALU may be restricted to addition and subtraction or may include functions of multiplication, division, trigonometries such as sine, cosine, etc., and square roots.

Central Processing Unit: 

The ALU, control unit and registers and together called the CPU. It is sometimes called the computer's brain, and its job is to perform commands. We send instructions to the CPU whenever we press a key, click the mouse, or start an application.

Software refers to computer parts, such as programs, data, protocols, etc., that do not have a material form. In contrast to the physical hardware from which the system is built, the software is that portion of a computer system consisting of encoded information or computer instructions.

It is sometimes called "firmware" when the software is stored in hardware that can not be easily modified, such as with a BIOS ROM on an IBM PC compatible computer.

Computer hardware and software require each other, and neither of them can be realistically used on their own. There are four main components of a general-purpose computer: the arithmetic logic unit (ALU), the control unit, the memory, and the I/O (collectively called input and output) devices.

Uses of Computer

Computers are used in various fields, such as homes, businesses, government offices, research organizations, educational institutions, medicine, entertainment, etc. because of their features and powerful functions. They have taken sectors and companies to a whole new level.

Science- 

Computers are best suited for the collection, analysis, categorization, and storage of data in science, research and engineering. They also help scientists to exchange data both internally and internationally with each other.

Government-  

Computers in the government sector are used to perform various functions and improve their services. In most cases, data processing tasks, the maintenance of citizens' databases, and the promotion of a paperless environment are the primary purposes of using computers. In addition to this, computers play a key role in the country's defence system.

Health and Medicine- 

They are used to preserve information, records, live patient monitoring, X-rays, and more from patients. Computers assist in setting up laboratory tools, monitoring heart rate and blood pressure, etc. Besides, computers allow physicians to easily exchange patient data with other medical specialists.

Education- 

They help people get different educational materials (such as images, videos, e-books, etc.) in one place. Also, computers are best suited for online classes, online tutoring, online exams, and task and project creation. Also, they can be used to maintain and track student performance and other data.

Banking- 

Most countries use online banking systems so that customers can access their data directly. People can verify the balance of their account, transfer cash, and pay online bills, including credit cards. Super Computer- 

Among all types of computers, supercomputers are the fastest and most costly computers. They have an enormous capacity for storage and computing speeds and can therefore perform millions of instructions per second.

Workstations-  

It is a single-user computer with a comparatively more powerful microprocessor and a high-quality monitor compared to a mini-computer.

In the modern world of technological advancement, computer is the amazing gift given by the science to us. It has changed the living style and standard of the people. Learning computer has become very essential in all the modern-day jobs. In the higher education there are subjects like network administration, hardware maintenance, software installation, etc for the enhancement of skill.

Invention of the computer has made many dreams come true even we cannot imagine our lives without computer. Generally computer is a device used for many purposes like information storage, email, messaging, software programming, calculation, data processing and many more. Desktop computer need a CPU, an UPS, a keyboard and a mouse for well functioning however laptop does not need anything to add outside as it is included with all inside. Charles Babbage had invented the first mechanical computer which was totally different from the modern day computer. The aim of computer invention was to create a machine which can perform very fast mathematical calculations. During the World War II it was used to locate and estimate the direction and speed of weapons of the enemies. Modern day computers are available with the artificial Intelligence technology to helps us in every sector of life.

New generation computer are being highly advanced means smaller, lighter, speedier and more powerful. Now a day, it is running in almost all walks of life like weather forecasting, guidance of spacecraft, examinations, education, shopping, traffic control, high level programming, automation in banks, railway ticket booking, playing games, medical sector, machinery operations, job opening, business, crime detection etc.

It is the backbone of the Information Technology including with the internet and proved that nothing is impossible today. If there are positive effects of the computer on the life of human being, it also negatively affected the human lives such as rise in the Cyber crime, pornographic websites can be accessed by kids or younger and many more however using some preventive measures we can be safe from its negative effects.

The whole human fraternity is becoming highly dependent on the computer technology; no one can imagine life without computer. As, it has spread its wings so deeply in every area and made people used of it. It is very beneficial for the students of any class. They can use it to prepare their projects, learn poems, read different stories, download notes for exam preparations, collect large information within seconds, learn about painting, drawing, etc. It enhances the professional skills of the students and helps in getting job easily.

Otherwise, it could be just the instruction to group a given set of data or to ungroup it. Today’s computers have the power to carry out billions of calculations in a second and return results that are very accurate and reliable. How did it all happen? Where did it all start?

The computers of today find their roots in the second half of the twentieth century.  Later as time progressed, we saw many technological improvements in physics and electronics . This has eventually led to revolutionary developments in the hardware and software of computers. In other words, soon the computer started to evolve. Each such technological advancement marks a generation of computers. Let us begin with the first one.

Generations of Computers

First Generation Of Computers

Computers developed between 1946 – 1959, are the first generation of computers. They were large and limited to basic calculations. They consisted of large devices like the vacuum tubes. The input method of these computers was a machine language known as the 1GL or the first generation language. The physical methods of using punch cards, paper tape, and magnetic tape were used to enter data into these computers.

Examples of the first generation computers include ENIAC, EDVAC, UNIVAC, IBM-701, and IBM-650. These computers were large and very unreliable. They would heat up and frequently shut down and could only be used for very basic computations.

Second Generation Of Computers

Computers developed between 1959-1965 the second generation computers. These computers were more reliable and in place of vacuum tubes, used transistors. This made them far more compact than the first generation computers. The input for these computers were higher level languages like COBOL, FORTRAN etc. In these computers, primary memory was stored on the magnetic cores and magnetic tape and they used magnetic disks as secondary storage devices.

Examples of the second generation computers include IBM 1620, IBM 7094, CDC 1604, CDC 3600, UNIVAC 1108.  As a result, they worked on AC and therefore were faster than their predecessors.

Third Generation Of Computers

Computers developed during the period of 1965 – 1971, the third generation of computers. These computers differed from the first and the second generations simply by the fact that a new circuit element like IC’s (Integrated Circuits) was used. An integrated circuit is a small device that can contain thousands and thousands of devices like transistors, resistances and other circuit elements that make up a computer. Jack Kilby is credited with the invention of the Integrated Circuit or the IC chips. With the invention of IC’s, it became possible to fit thousands of circuit elements into a small region and hence the size of the computers eventually became smaller and smaller.

Another salient feature of these computers was that they were much more reliable and consumed far less power. The input languages for such computers were COBOL, FORTRAN-II up to FORTRAN-IV, PASCAL, ALGOL-68, BASIC,  etc. These languages were much better and could represent more information. Consequently more and more complex calculations are possible

Examples of the third generation computers include IBM-360 series, Honeywell-6000 series, PDP (Personal Data Processor),  and IBM-370/168.

Fourth Generation Of Computers

Fourth Generation of computers was between 1971 – 1980. These computers used the VLSI technology or the Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) circuits technology. Therefore they were also known as the microprocessors. Intel was the first company to develop a microprocessor. The first “personal computer” or PC developed by IBM, belonged to this generation. VLSI circuits had almost about 5000 transistors on a very small chip and were capable of performing many high-level tasks and computations. These computers were thus very compact and thereby required a small amount of electricity to run.

Examples are STAR 1000, CRAY-X-MP(Super Computer), DEC 10, PDP 11, CRAY-1. This generation of computers had the first “supercomputers” that could perform many calculations accurately. They were also used in networking and also used higher and more complicated languages as their inputs. The computer languages like languages like C, C+, C++, DBASE etc. were the input for these computers.

Fifth Generation Of Computers

This is the present generation of computers and is the most advanced one. The generation began somewhere around 1981  and is the present generation of computers. The methods of input include the modern high-level languages like Python, R, C#, Java etc. These are extremely reliable and employ the ULSI or the Ultra Large Scale Integration technology. These computers are at the frontiers of the modern scientific calculations and are used to develop the Artificial Intelligence or AI components that will have the ability to think for themselves.

Examples include: Intel P 4, i 3 – i10, AMD Athlon, etc.

History of Computer: In 1822, Charles Babes first invented the Decentral and Analytical Encyclopedia, inspired by Pascalin, Digital Computer, in 1937, he envisioned an automated computer that had the ability to compute in accordance with artificial memory and program, but Herner Hollerith Also completed! The electronic tabulation machine was built to do all the work with the help of punchcard! This means that the first generation computer used a vacuum tube or vacuum valve.

Computer Inventors 

In 1948 the transistor was replaced instead of the valve! With this, the heat generated in the vacuum tube could be detected by the heat! It was possible to create a computer that costs less and less space! In 1958, instead of the transistor, the integrated circuits on the silicon chip were used in the field of computer. It brought basic changes in the field of computer and a new revolution, which was said to be the third generation of computers! Because the size of the silicone chip-made computer is very small, they are called mini-computers.

Computer History by Year: The computer workshop and capabilities that developed through computer technology have resulted in the invention of computers for the generation of different generations and different types of the computer! This development of work capacity started called Computer Generation in 1964.

First Generation

Vacuum tubes (1940 – 1956): Vacuum tubes were used to control and transmit electronic signals, but a complete computer was created, but the computer’s hypothesis was first introduced by them. These used to create larger and more heat in the shape of tubes and they were likely to have broken-up and more malfunction, and the ability to calculate it was also very low and the first-generation computers used to occupy more space.

Second Generation

Transistor (1956 – 1963): Invented the transistor. During this time the transistors were used simultaneously in computers, which were more capable and cheap than valves. Those used to replace vacuum tubes for computer manufacturing. The size of the transistor is much smaller than vacuum tubes. By which the computer is small and its ability to calculate more and faster. Compared to the first generation, they were able to measure smaller and less heat and calculate more efficiency and faster speed.

Third Generation Computer

An integrated circuit (1964 – 1971): computers of this period could be used simultaneously. This became a significant basis for the third generation of synchronized chip development; technological efforts were made to further reduce the size of the computer, resulting in the creation of an integrated circuit on the silicon chip, which was used in computers. As a result, it was possible to produce the smallest size of the computer so far! Their speed was from microseconds to nanoseconds, which was possible by a small scale integrated circuit.

Fourth Generation Computer

The microprocessor (1971 – 1985): Microprocessor was used in the fourth generation computers! V.S.L.I. With the acquisition, thousands of transistors could be used for a single chip.

Fifth Generation Computer

Artificial Intelligence: In this fifth stage of development, artificial intelligence has been invested in computers! Such a computer has not been fully developed! We can see these types of computers in robots and various types of sound programs ! It will be more capable than humans.

Because without computers we cannot control these resources, and my opinion is computers are the way of the future, That’s why computer education is very important in today’s time.

The History of Computer Generations

We divide the sequence of development into the following five generations based on the major changes in the computer: –

1st Generation

In 1946, Eckart and Muchali’s Eniac (ENIAC-Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) was created by a computer. This generation of computers used a vacuum tube, invented in 1904 by John Ambrose Fleming.

2nd Generation

In 1956, the second generation of computers was started, these computers replaced the vacuum with a transistor instead of a vacuum tube. William Shockley was the inventor of the transistor.

3rd Generation

The third generation began in 1964. This generation used I.C. in computers. I.C. That is, the Integrated Circuit was invented by Jack Kilby, an engineer at the Texas Instrument Company.

4th Generation

Computers from 1971 to 1985 are classified as fourth-generation computers. The integrated circuit was further developed in this generation called Large Integrated Circuit.

5th Generation

Computers since 1985 are under the fifth generation. The 5th generation of computers includes powerful and supercomputers from the present to the future computers. Scientists today are trying to incorporate artificial intelligence into computers.

Now computers are so advanced that they are being used in every specific field, accounting, engineering, building, space and other types of research. Now it would not be wrong to say that without computers it has become impossible to work in these fields.

Efforts are being made to reduce the size of computers, as a result of which we can use computers in the shape of wristwatches. With the help of computers, we can exchange documents, information and money from anywhere around the world.

Earlier there was a long time to print a book, a magazine or a newspaper, but now this work can be done very quickly. A fully organized and attractive book containing colorful beautiful illustrations can be handed over to our readers in a very short time.

Earlier we used to get news through newspapers, but nowadays we can read and watch news through the internet and computer online.

5. Massive Storage Capacity

We can store huge information, up to the present time of 2019 hard disk can store 100 terabytes (TB) of information. Big businesses store their marketing and sales data in their computer systems even the sensitive data of customers is safely stored in computer hard disks. 

In the field of education, computer-today, while sitting at home, you can get information about any subject online, so that the student in whose city those courses are not available or who cannot go out and study can also get an education.

We can take the help of Microsoft Office Tools, Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to prepare important notes. 

6. Computer usage in the medical field

In the hospital, we use computers to keep records of patient records, doctor’s time table, nurse’s information, purchase of medicines and all other equipment. Many types of devices are used to treat patients with the help of computers.
