Does modern society still have heroes?

While I was writing The Compass of Success , I asked around 200 people this question, and one thing surprised me about the answers.

To start with, everyone talked about famous actors or singers, athletes, or TV personalities, yet very few people brought up politicians or cultural figures such as writers or artists. But when the question changed to "Who are your heroes," all the answers changed too.

Lots of people mentioned a parent and many more said a grandparent, a teacher from the past, an old friend or a colleague. So basically the responses shifted from the spotlight of publicity to the true light of reason, the light of the heart.

It’s as if we accept a model of an empty, artificial model of heroism, but in our hearts we reserve a place for a person who’s dear to us, someone who may not ever be famous, as our personal hero.

Narcissism to courage

So I think we need to reconsider our role models to reprogram who we want to emulate: people we respect because of their ethical values and morals, not based on how many followers they have on social media, or how much they earned from the umpteenth display of narcissism on TV. So what are the criteria for choosing our heroes?

Heroes have the courage of their convictions . In other words, these people are consumed by their ideals; they’ve been imprisoned or even killed for what they believe in. Does that mean we have to follow the same path? Heroic as it may be, it certainly isn’t very appealing. But I’m convinced that we are all potentially heroes.

A hero is that middle-aged man who loses his job, and along with it his identity, yet he has the willpower to get back in the game, starting all over again from scratch, with dignity, until he makes it. A hero is that single mother, widowed or divorced, driven by a strong sense of responsibility, who manages to go on, day after day, so she can provide a brighter future for her kids. Heroes are young people fighting to get a job, or to stay in school, or to open a business or a start-up, despite an unemployment rate that strikes fear in their hearts.

Heroes are those workers who break their backs for a decent wage, working the night shift, taking the same tram for 30 years every morning at five. They are the cleaners who diligently do their job before 8 am and after 8 pm so we find our offices clean and tidy. Heroes are those immigrants who come from faraway places, and who perform menial tasks with pride, even though they’re qualified as lawyers or teachers in their home countries; they send their families everything they earn. Heroes are adopted children who were abandoned at birth, or children whose parents are divorced, yet they manage to keep their faith in adults, in their love, in life. Heroes are the social or religious workers who help the disenfranchised, the forgotten, the invisible.

Heroes are doctors, professors, judges, nurses, police officers who take responsibility for our health, our safety, the education of others, often for a modest salary. They are entrepreneurs who manage to run their companies and provide jobs for people who deserve to work, often despite endless bureaucratic headaches, or in some cases threats from organized crime rings. Heroes are survivors of terrible tragedies who strive to help others who share a similar destiny, teaching them that they too can overcome hard times. They are journalists or artists who use their art and knowledge to tell a story, to shine a light, to serve and encourage others.

Daily dignity

Heroes are people who protect our environment and our artistic treasures from unscrupulous opportunists. They are retired people who get miserly pensions after 40 years of work, but still manage to live with dignity and dedicate themselves to being grandparents. Heroes are people who walk through life on their own paths with their heads held high, without giving up their self-respect or their identity, despite the discrimination they suffer because of their sexual, religious, racial or political preferences. Heroes are the people who don’t accept exploitation, organized crime, corruption, scams, or games where the rules are rigged against those who deserve to win. They are people who volunteer their time to help neglected seniors, exploited women, forgotten children, convicts, prostitutes, and people who are all alone.

The time has come to change our model of heroism. This means that being a hero is no longer a mythical classification reserved for super heroes in comic books, or a few legendary men and women, or worse still, peacocks who spend all their time strutting in front of the mirror or under the spotlight. Instead, being a hero becomes a way of life: we don’t need heroic acts, but daily dignity. Our work becomes not just a job, but our most profound and authentic identity.

I’m convinced that you’re a hero too, or you’re about to turn into one.

From healthcare workers and first responders to social activists and environmentalists, heroes come in all shapes and forms. But what are the defining characteristics of a modern hero? For this question, we need to examine the various characteristics that make a person a hero and the impact they have on society.

His/her selfless nature, great courage, determination and brevity are the major traits that enhance the success of his/her deeds. The memories of heroes remain in communities’ cultures. Constant reminders of heroic deeds in most communities include monuments, statues, paper bills, coinages, tributes and memorials.

Others include names of streets, towns, states, institutions and buildings. These reminders help to put the heroes as pillars the society. There are two types of heroes, the mythological heroes and the modern-day heroes. The major distinction between these two types of heroes is that the modern-day heroes mainly depend on their intelligence and wit while the mythological heroes depended on their endurance, courage and strength.

A mythological hero, also referred to as a supernatural hero, is a hero whose deeds were extraordinary and lived during the primordial age. This is the period before the world’s industrial revolution. Myths and other forms of literature were the tools that the community used to pass the deeds of the heroes from one generation to the other.

Difficult moments in a community defined the moments when a hero would come forth in his/her attempt to bring a solution to the situation and salvation to many. It is thus evident that not everyone could stand out in his/her deeds to rescue the people from their difficulties. This is the basis of not only a mythological hero but also modern-day heroes.

Mythological heroes performed extraordinary deeds, risked their lives for the sake of others, and fell victims to a given difficult situation and managed to come out of it successfully. Most cultures believed that mythological heroes had supernatural aspects within themselves because their deeds usually lacked concrete human explanation. It is important to mention that all generations of a given community had to know about them.

This was a sign that the communities highly valued the contribution of the heroes to the success of the entire community. The word mythological hero has his origin in ancient Greece. This is to say that the Greeks were the first people in history to have mythological heroes. One of such heroes is Achilles.

Achilles is one of the mythological heroes in Greece. Historians consider him as one of the mightiest Greeks. He became a hero during the Trojan War. Her mother abandoned him when he was still a young boy leaving him under the custody of his father. According to Edwards (1985), when Achilles was a boy, the seer Calchas prophesied that the city of Troy needed help in order to take the city (p.217).

When his mother heard this prophecy she took the boy and went into hiding. She not only hid the boy but also disguised him as a young girl that people would not notice him. It did not take long before he was recognised. In the company of his friend and tutor, Achilles went to Troy to fight.

During the war, he distinguished himself as a great and an inexorable warrior. He proved this by his ability to capture twenty–three towns in the Trojan territory. He took a woman, Briseis, from Troy to his homeland. He also performed many other exploits. It is also important to mention that Achilles killed the Trojan hero and this was a great achievement to the Greeks. Achilles’ deeds were indeed heroic.

Mythological quest is an important aspect in myths just like in other forms of literature. It refers to a journey towards a goal (Auden, 2001, p. 35). For a mythological hero, it served as a symbol that he came out successfully. To the community, it properly brought out the hero’s determination to emerge victorious through his deeds.

To the would-be heroes, it helped to inspire them to become brave and to be selfless whenever it came to bringing solutions to problems facing the society. It also helped people to develop the aspect of setting goals in their lives. Mythological quest brought a revelation to most people in the society about dedication to ones decisions.

Every culture valued their heroes. It did not matter the situation that led to the rise of a certain hero if his deeds were selfless and geared towards saving a particular group of people or even the entire community. Providing mostly for himself, Scott Mescudi, also known as Kid Cudi, had to revolutionize the music industry in order to make a name for himself. On the same note, Odysseus proves himself a hero by overcoming physical obstacles such as many villainous creatures and the struggle for maintaining his morals,  In these scenes, the obstacles that Odysseus has to face are illuminated. Although Odysseus’s obstacles are mainly monsters and the struggle to find a way back home, Scott Mescudi shares similar difficulties through battling with depression and narcotics abuse.

Not only do Odysseus and Kid Cudi prove themselves heroes by overcoming obstacles, they also describe qualities of heroes by never giving up, even in difficult times. In the second verse of Kid Cudi’s previously mentioned song, “Soundtrack 2 My Life”, Scott Mescudi raps about his challenges throughout his childhood, “I’m super paranoid, like a sixth sense. Since my father died, I ain’t been right since.” This slip of his second verse enlightens the listeners about his determination throughout his childhood. Even after one of the most important figures in his life kicked him out and soon after died, Scott Mescudi found a way to progress and reach his goal. In similar fashion, Odysseus sails home in order to reach his wife and kid, overcoming difficult odds and persevering through the struggle. During this long ride home, Odysseus maintains faith in himself and continues to move forward towards his goal. In the same way, Scott Mescudi remains hopeful and continues to make music in order to revolutionize music and reach his goal.

Ultimately, Odysseus’ and Kid Cudi’s demonstration of never giving up would not have occurred if they did not influence others. Kid Cudi displays this quality through reaching out to his listeners and connecting and guiding them. In Scott Mescudi’s single, “The Prayer”, he informs his listeners that he’s by their side, “And if I die, before I wake. I pray the lord my soul to take. But please don’t cry, just know that I have made these songs for you.” From these lyrics, Cudi’s letting listeners know that they have a shoulder to cry on. Even in the most difficult times, Kid Cudi did not have this support, and his ultimate goal in music is to be there for his listeners. In a similar manner, Odysseus influences his men while sailing to Ithaca. Odysseus inspires his men to be ready for a battle. After this, his men no longer have fear and are standing at Odysseus’ side.

 Odysseus provided examples of overcoming physical obstacles, influencing others, and never giving up, proving that the definition of a modern hero has not evolved over time. This proves that to this day, the definition of a hero is similar to those in Odysseus’ time.

There are, of course, benefits and drawbacks to each model of airing an anime series. One Piece is a great example of the continuously running anime approach. The series has been releasing pretty consistently, with an occasional short week-long break at the most, since the first episode was released on October 20, 1999. A lot of other popular anime series adopted the continuous model, including Naruto, Bleach, and Dragon Ball Z. Due to these massively popular shonen setting the stage, this way of creating an anime became immensely popular, with many other creators following suit and adopting a continuous schedule for their series.

However, M y Hero Academia came along to break that trend and establish a previously unheard-of option for an anime release schedule. It was one of the first big shonen series to try out an alternative model. For example, the first season of the anime ran from April 3, 2016, to June 26, 2016. Instead of continuing weekly like another anime at the time might have done, the show took a break until April 1 of 2017: an almost year-long break. This was radical at the time, since most big shonen properties did not pause for any extended amount of time .

The Seasonal Model Allows For More Concise Storytelling & Better Arcs

Series like Chainsaw Man, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Spy x Family all began using this perspective to define their anime release schedules. Although all of these beloved series would have been able to release filler without catching too much flak from fans, each of these creators saw the benefits of breaking between seasons in order to create an intentional story that doesn't include filler content, choosing instead to craft one succinct storyline and plot that flows steadily between seasons.

There Are Positives and Negatives With Each Release Model

For series like One Piece and Naruto, the weekly schedule seems to work well and please fans. Filler content is not always a negative and sometimes even drives the plot forward and offers interesting and surprising insight into beloved characters that there is no time to delve into in traditional plot-focused episodes. There is much discourse, both in favor of and against, this type of content, but lighthearted side episodes can provide a nice respite from continual action, and heavier topics like character death. However, not every series will benefit from including these and My Hero Academia is one such example.

The seasonal model has given My Hero Academia incredible pacing . With 25 episodes per season and year-long breaks, Deku's journey is able to progress steadily but not feel rushed, allowing him to grow in his abilities at the right pace. It allows for breaks between darker arcs that include emotionally heavy moments and death, like the Shie Hassaikai arc. These pauses give fans time to process and creators time to ponder what direction to take the next season. Although continuous series will not cease to exist, more shows are taking inspiration from My Hero Academia 's astounding success with the seasonal model.

Opinion Christine Blasey Ford is no hero, if justice is the measure

Christine Blasey Ford is promoting her new memoir to acclaim from certain quarters, including a glowing review by the New York Times. Meanwhile, the man she accused of being a witness to her alleged sexual assault by now-Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh more than 40 years ago can’t get his own book reviewed or even mentioned by mainstream newspapers.

You know me. I can’t resist flipping over a cow patty to see what’s underneath.

Ford, you’ll recall, is the California psychologist with two front doors in her house who, in testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2018, accused Kavanaugh of assaulting her at a high-school-era party while another boy, Mark Judge, allegedly stood by. Judge, who kept his distance and silence during Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings — in part, he has said , to avoid further harassment by Democratic interlocutors — released his own version of those events and the aftermath in “ The Devil’s Triangle: Mark Judge vs the New American Stasi ” (2022).

As with Kavanaugh, Ford’s accusation against Judge was embraced by most of the news media despite an absence of evidence or corroborating testimony. No one who was supposed to have been at the party where Ford was allegedly assaulted remembered it, or her. Ford herself was unable to nail down the year the party took place (but settled on 1982 after several stabs) or where it was held, how she got there, how she got home or any other details, except that she herself had consumed just one beer, according to her testimony. Her claims against Kavanaugh ultimately were unsubstantiated.

Even so, the awards and accolades for Ford keep coming. During a recent appearance on “The View,” she was nearly sanctified for her “bravery.” Not one of the “View” chin-wags seemed to have done any research. They merely checked the box next to “female” and continued to hold in contempt the male who became a Supreme Court justice. Whoopi Goldberg summed it up: “To face those people the way they were looking and dealing with you, that is bravery under a whole different kind of fire.”

A fair-minded person would also wonder what it was like to be in Kavanaugh’s seat.

And what about Judge? “Roadkill” is the way constitutional lawyer Jonathan Turley described Judge’s invisible role in this tale. Of course, Judge and Kavanaugh were and are distinct people whose adult lives could not be more different. Kavanaugh was the kind of boy who kept a detailed calendar of his busy activities and who had a stellar career as a federal judge.

Judge, who chronicled his heavy-drinking school days in his 1997 book, “ Wasted: Tales of a Gen X Drunk ,” was a teenage alcoholic who had to claw his way to sobriety and suffered accordingly. He told Martha MacCallum during a recent Fox News interview that the effects of being essentially locked in a stockade for public ridicule and condemnation included “suicidal ideation” and “economic issues.”

Under interrogation by Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Kavanaugh was forced to review his youthful beer consumption, which he admitted was gustatory. He wasn’t alone; Ford was a drinker, too, according to friends and outlined in the deeply researched book “ Justice on Trial ” by Mollie Hemingway and Carrie Severino.

In my own research for a book that never came to fruition, I also learned that Ford was a party girl, which means she and I would have been friends. Her real “best friend” at the time, Leland Keyser, was known as her designated driver in those days, according to several of her friends cited in yet another book, “ The Education of Brett Kavanaugh ” by New York Times writers Robin Pogrebin and Kate Kelly.

A straight-A student and athlete who became a professional golfer, Keyser had her driver’s license at the time of the alleged assault.

Keyser, who felt pressured by Ford’s supporters to confirm Ford’s story, testified to the FBI that she had no recollection of any such party and didn’t know Kavanaugh.

When intimidation didn’t work, Ford and her friends implied that Keyser’s testimony couldn’t be trusted because she had “significant health challenges,” as Ford put it during her testimony. It didn’t take long for the meaning here to become public. Keyser had at one point become addicted to painkillers prescribed for golf-related back and neck injuries. She has suffered years of surgeries and pain that continues today, thanks to her commitment to recovery. No meds. She also has had to cope with the psychological effects of her persecution by the anti-Kavanaugh brigade. At least one person from Team Ford tried to persuade her to adjust her story. She refused.

Meanwhile, after five years of silence, Judge has emerged from his bunker with both barrels blazing. One can stand only so much smearing. He was, after all, accused in the public arena of variously urging Kavanaugh on or trying to stop him, all the while laughing, according to Ford. Like Kavanaugh, Judge was presumed guilty — a tragic by-product of the “believe the woman” orthodoxy that emerged during the #MeToo movement — and justly wants to have his say.

It takes guts to try to breach the #MeToo iron curtain, as Judge is attempting to do. It takes no courage at all to enrich yourself at other people’s expense, as Ford has done. Even if she believes her own story or suffered some traumatic event at some time, in the absence of evidence or corroboration, a measure of doubt is called for. This doesn’t necessarily mean she lied, as Hemingway and Severino have noted.

Both Judge and Keyser, it seems, deserve the applause Ford is receiving for perpetuating a questionable history that has damaged so many people, not to mention the judicial system she says she has sought to protect. We know the truth is otherwise, thanks to a video capture of Ford’s lawyer, Debra Katz, saying that her client wanted to block Kavanaugh because of fears he would vote to reverse Roe v. Wade . Ford’s fears might have been justified, but her tactics — which have netted her $1 million in donations plus overnights at Oprah’s — were not.

Nothing good grows under a cow patty, but Ford sure did step in one.
