Here’s a quick general guide:

I’m not sure which wordmark variation I should use. Read more about the  wordmark variations  or contact us directly at  cals-comm [at] cornell.edu (cals-comm[at]cornell[dot]edu) .

I’m creating something for digital or screen display, like a presentation, video, image or document that will primarily be seen online. Use PNG or JPG files. PNG files are ideal for digital documents such as web pages, digital presentations and for video. Their transparent backgrounds make them especially useful for places where a transparent background is required (like over a field of color). PNGs also won’t get grainy or blurry when uploaded. JPGs will also work really well on the web provided they are not too large in file size.

I’m using Microsoft Office or another word or layout editor to create something to print out, like a letter or informal flyer. Use JPGs for Word documents that you intend to print, or for any projects that require printing at a low-to-medium resolution.

I’m creating something really nice or big for an event, for marketing, or for a big sign. Go with EPS files. They’re designed to produce high-resolution graphics for print, and you can scale EPS files and they won’t lose resolution. EPS files, much like PDFs, can be opened in several different applications, including but not limited to Adobe Creative Cloud products.

Engineering CUP Awards: Cornell University Presentations

The CUP Awards competition invites engaging, unique, insightful technical presentations from undergraduates. Engineering and technical work has no force or presence unless it's communicated well; to that end, the CUP Awards aim to recognize students who create powerful presentations about their engineering projects. Undergraduates from the current academic year are invited to participate.

Cornell’s College of Engineering and the Engineering Communications Program invites undergraduate individuals and teams to be considered for three separate awards for presentations. Winning students will earn both a monetary award and full recognition from the College of Engineering and Cornell University.

The Roger K. Berman Oral Presentation Award (for individual speakers; new topical theme each year).

The Fuertes Medal Memorial Prize for Public Speaking (for teams).

The Douglas Whitney Prize for Engineering Student Presentations  (for individual speakers or teams).

The goal of the Engineering CUP Awards is to highlight undergraduate work within the College of Engineering, showcasing the importance of strong communication for any technical endeavor. Presenters will benefit, too, from the training, advice, and guidance offered by training workshops and feedback.

These competitions all come with cash awards. The categories of awards listed below allowed for extraordinary students to be recognized for their high levels of presentation prowess, even in the most trying of years.

Careers beyond academia, tips for a memorable 5-minute research presentation.

microphone with empty chairs

“If you get the first 5 minutes down, you are going to be golden for the rest of your presentation.” These were the words Susi Varvayanis, Executive Director of Careers Beyond Academia, stated at the start of Tips for a Memorable 5-Minute Research Presentation.

To help alleviate the stress and worries of making a good presentation, please review a summary of some amazing tips. There are three parts of a presentation that can influence the outcome of the presentation.

  • You, the speaker
  • Your presentation slides
  • The audience

How do you as the speaker prepare yourself for the best presentation?

  • Be aware of your body language – gestures are important, and they underscore the importance of the message we pass across. Add a smile! Be enthusiastic and make eye contact with the audience. These contribute to the appearance of confidence as you present.
  • Practice voice modulations – the way you speak can convey a lot about the information you are passing. Avoid going too fast. Add pauses as you speak, slow your speech, and emphasize key words.
  • Avoid jargon and acronyms – According to the dictionary, jargon is defined as special words or expressions that are used by a particular profession or groups and is difficult for others to understand. So, avoid them! Especially since some words can convey different connotations for different audiences. So, if I don’t use jargon, what should I use? How do I still convey my point? Try a different word, or use an analogy.

What makes for good presentation slides?

  • Good illustrations – make use of simplified images that pass across the information that you are presenting. Simple cartoon illustrations make it easy for the audience, regardless of background, to understand and follow the meanings.
  • Data presentation – avoid using excel defaults. Replace topics and labels with easier to understand headings that communicate your main point. Also, simplify images by removing unnecessary sections that do not apply to your audience. Most importantly, lead the audience through your work with all its ups and downs.

How does the audience affect your presentation?

The audience that you have dictates how you present your information. To prepare for your presentation, evaluate your audience. Understand the hook and make them care. Find unifying interests or commonality among the audience. Understand the goals and issues that challenge the audience. Do your images intrigue the audience?

Here is what makes your 5-minute pitch memorable:

  • It is passionate – This comes with understanding what inspires your work. Passion for research leads you to excel, even when you suffer setbacks.
  • It tells a good story – when you have a flow with compelling images, it helps tell a story, saves explanation, and hooks the audience.
  • It gives a ‘why’ – from your presentation, the audience should know why they should care about your work, the implications of your results and how they can apply this information.

Here are some resources that you can explore to help you with a great presentation:

  • Tool to check for jargon: De-Jargonizer (scienceandpublic.com)
  • The difference between ‘what’ and your ‘why’: Know Your Why | Michael Jr. – YouTube
  • Practice your skills: join ComSciCon-NY – in early June; Three-Minute Thesis or business case competitions
  • A guide with many exercises to improve your research communication – Finding Your Research Voice – Cornell University Library Catalog

We would love to hear your own opinions and tips on what you feel gives a good presentation!

Q: How do I edit the slide master?

A: Elements on the slide master have been intentionally designed to preserve the integrity of the brand. Please do not adjust the position, appearance or size of the elements on this page. To edit the presentation title, click View Slide Master and select the first slide. Click on the text box in the lower right-hand corner and edit the text to match the presentation’s title.

Q: How much color/text is too much?

A: Use bold, bright colors selectively. The colors in the presentation should compliment and highlight the content, not distract the audience.

Keep the amount of text on your page to a minimum. The text sizes have been set for optimum readability in a variety of presentation settings. Long blocks of small text decreases readability and may reduce the clarity and impact of the message.

“Cornell Cooperative Extension is an employer and educator recognized for valuing AA/EEO, Protected Veterans, and Individuals with Disabilities and provides equal program and employment opportunities”

Icons/graphics/logos.

Per industry standards, using icons/graphics/logos in signatures is discouraged. This includes the Cornell seal and social media icons. Mobile and tablet devices and some email clients strip icons/graphics/logos from the email and display them as empty frames or include them as attachments. Instead, spelling out the item that you wish to include and hyperlinking to the relevant web page is recommended.

Merchandising Guidelines

Guidelines for the cornell seal.

If you would like to produce Cornell Seal branded materials—such as apparel, gift items, and sporting goods—you must adhere to the following guidelines located at  brand.cornell.edu/merchandising .

  • Purchase merchandise using a  licensed manufacturer . The licensing process (administered by the Collegiate Licensing Company in Atlanta, Georgia) ensures that the Cornell name and logo are used appropriately, and that merchandise is manufactured under a code of conduct designed to reinforce fair-labor practices and prohibit sweatshop conditions.
  • The logo must be rendered in  Cornell red (PMS 187), white, or black .
  • It may also be etched on metal or glass or stamped on metal or leather.
  • The logo must adhere to the standards established in the  logos and lockups  section.
  • For embroidery applications, the  seal  should be a minimum of 2-5/16″ in diameter.
  • Do not redraw, reconstruct, or modify the logo in any way.
  • The logo is a  trademark  of Cornell University and cannot be altered.

Guidelines for just the Cooperative Extension Wordmark

Producing Extension branded items with just the extension wordmark is a lot easier!

  • We still recommend purchasing merchandise through a  licensed manufacturer . The licensing process (administered by the Collegiate Licensing Company in Atlanta, Georgia) ensures that the Cornell name and logo are used appropriately, and that merchandise is manufactured under a code of conduct designed to reinforce fair-labor practices and prohibit sweatshop conditions.
  • The wordmark should be rendered in  Cornell red (PMS 187), white, or black .
  • Do not redraw, reconstruct, or modify the wordmark in any way.

Executive Presence Cornell Certificate Program

Do you have the presence of a leader? Executive presence is a vital skill in business and life: being able to connect with other people by making your case and communicating genuine emotion, even in the most intimidating circumstances. Whether you’re leading a team meeting or giving a formal presentation to a large group, you can learn to combine your breath, your voice, your body positioning, your passionate belief in what you're saying, and your authentic self so profoundly that people won't be able to look away.

In this 15-week certificate program, you'll learn by doing to refine your public speaking skills and build confidence in your own presence. By sharing videos of yourself presenting and receiving constructive feedback from fellow students and experts, you'll practice analyzing your performance, repeating, and refining your work in exercises and acting techniques specially designed by Cornell Theatre Professor David Feldshuh. It's not about achieving perfection. The core skills, analytical tools, and training exercises presented in this program are intended to position you for a lifetime of development. The better you get, the more confident you’ll feel. And it will show.

This program includes a year of free access to Symposium! These events feature several days of live, highly participatory virtual Zoom sessions with Cornell faculty and experts to explore the most pressing leadership topics. Symposium events are held several times throughout the year. Once enrolled in your program, you will receive information about upcoming events.

Throughout the year, you may participate in as many sessions as you wish. Attending Symposium sessions is not required to successfully complete the certificate program.
