Stemstarter: a high school capstone course to create stem career pathways, description.

High school capstone courses—culminating educational experiences for seniors as they conclude their formal high school education—have become increasingly popular across the nation, particularly in New England. The STEMStarter Capstone was designed to help Connecticut high schools meet new accreditation standards from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and graduation requirements that include a mastery-based learning project. Standard 2 of the NEASC 2020 Standards (2018) for school accreditation states: “Students are active learners and have the opportunity to lead their own learning.” Methods to effectively meet this principle include

  • learning that is personalized, relevant, and authentic;
  • opportunities for students to determine outcomes;
  • project-based activities;
  • opportunities for students to apply knowledge to authentic tasks;
  • opportunities for student choice and the ability to explore personal interests; and
  • opportunities for students to learn in and out of school (NEASC 2017).

A traditional capstone course asks students to first conduct research on a topic of interest, then to produce some type of final written report or portfolio or give a presentation that summarizes and demonstrates student learning. While traditional capstone projects increase students’ knowledge in a particular area, they do not necessarily build the STEM or workforce skills that today’s economy demands. Many capstone projects, including the new AP Capstone course sequence of AP Seminar and AP Research, have intense and rigorous research requirements but do not expose students to job opportunities, non-cognitive skills, entrepreneurship, or business skills. This is troubling because STEM jobs in Connecticut have grown three times faster than non-STEM jobs over the last decade, and two-thirds of state GDP growth is driven by STEM innovations (Next Generation Connecticut 2013). Despite promising opportunities, high school student interest in STEM careers has not increased significantly and in some cases has actually declined in the United States (Project Tomorrow 2014). In addition, to maintain America’s economic competitiveness in the global market, encouraging American innovation and entrepreneurship is critical (Atkinson and Ezell 2013).

Instead of concluding the school year by turning in a long research report, over 100 STEMStarter Capstone students come together in a huge theater dome to show off their projects at individual booths. This is the culminating event for the Skills21 STEMStarter Capstone, and the excitement in the dome is palpable. On their tables are working prototypes of student-created innovations. iPads and laptops display student-designed interactive websites. Judges walk the aisles and ask probing questions about the projects. One student demonstrates his running vest designed for safety. With the squeeze of a button, he shows the judges that an emergency alert message can be sent to a cell phone to indicate that the runner needs help, including the runner’s exact GPS coordinates. Another student has a judge sit in an office chair to demonstrate that when the judge does not sit with correct posture, a light near the computer illuminates. A third student shows the judges the foundation, eyeshadow, and lipstick that she made from all natural products, inspired by her friend who had to undergo chemotherapy and could not use makeup with any artificial ingredients or chemicals.

Boeing partners with School of STEM to create capstone project

The School of STEM at the University of Washington Bothell has shared several successful collaborations with industry through its engineering capstone program. This year was special however, as for the first time, the School of STEM was honored to have Boeing as one of our industry partners. This year Boeing engineers collaborated with students from the Division of Engineering & Mathematics Mechanical Engineering program (ME).

Six senior mechanical engineering students created their own goose neck hinge, which allows the passenger door of an aircraft to open to 180 degrees. Boeing tasked the students to create a hinge using a more contemporary manufacturing process and more modern materials than the ones they currently use. The team was advised and mentored by Boeing senior technical lead engineers Matthew Soja and Mitchell Mellor, Engineering Capstone Coordinator Dr. Imen Elloumi-Hannachi, ME faculty Dr. John Bridge and Captain Bill Anderson. who continuously collaborated to provide guidance and support to the students throughout the project.

The students, Kacper Syzmanski, Andrey Fomin, William Fogle, Loyan Dude, Simran Deol and Daniel Comsea, who all graduated in June, were selected based on their interests, career aspirations and qualifications for the project. The team split into sub-groups to work on various aspects of the project, from research, manufacturing, design, testing and coding. Led by Syzmanski and Fomin, the team created various designs before finding one that is capable of withstanding 9,000 lbs. of tension and 4,500 lbs. of compression.

“Will, Andrey and I designed our clevis, which is the device that would hold our hinge in testing to verify that it would pass all the loading criteria,” said Syzmanski. “At the same time Loyan, Daniel, and Simran were researching materials to select for our hinge to get an idea of what the material and manufacturing costs would be, and what we could manufacture in house and what would have to be done through vendors.”

Before the project completion, the students were given the opportunity to tour of the Boeing Everett plant and to meet several other Boeing engineers and other students from the Seattle campus working on other capstone projects.

“It was a really great experience working with our Boeing mentors,” said Fogle. “I felt like I learned something new every meeting, whether it was about testing, structural design, or finite element analysis. They also respected our ability to solve problems and would subtly point us in the right direction without giving anything away. Their industry knowledge and experience were invaluable, being able to learn from them was a real privilege.”

Fomin said the experience was an incredible opportunity.

“We were all very excited to see our hinge in person and to test our hinge design. Our hinge met all the criteria given.”

Elloumi-Hannachi , said that the project gave students an opportunity to practice several aspects of engineering they learned in different courses, including design thinking and human centered design, and to develop their engineering skills even further. It also gave them the opportunity to learn more about Boeing culture and needs. The scope of the project was well-defined, and the constraints and requirements were explained to the students well in advance, while the students had to come up with their own design and demonstrate how it works. The students also had to present their work not only at the School of STEM Capstone Symposium, but also at the Boeing campus in front of Boeing engineers and senior leaders, as well as faculty and deans from all three UW campuses.

Bridge said that after this years’ experience, Boeing was interested in doing more projects with UW Bothell students in the future.

“They seemed very happy with the results of our team. This is a perfect capstone/company relationship as the projects envisioned — including the one we just did — are a wonderful mechanical engineering experience for our students,” said Bridge. “They can get their hands around these projects while also helping Boeing.   This experience also gives insight to our students into engineering at Boeing and networking opportunities for employment.”

Elloumi-Hannachi says that she was happy that the Boeing engineers took the time to share current job openings at Boeing, and that they were happy to recommend her students for those job openings.

“I am very pleased to see that several of the students already have jobs at Boeing,” she said. “I am excited to continue this partnership with Boeing, we already started discussing the scope of the projects for the next academic year.”

Innovation unveiled: ECEE students to showcase design projects

This year, team projects impact critical areas in sustainability, assistive technologies, communications, microgrid power distribution and new sensing technologies.

The ECEE Capstone Design course is a two-semester course for every senior in the department. Students collaborate as teams to design a product from concept to prototype. Each team partners with a sponsoring organization to define a product, determine suitable technology options and create a design from proof to final custom hardware and software. 

Through these hands-on experiences, students gain essential career skills into practice as professional engineers. 

Capstone Design, led by Scholar in Residence Eric Bogatin, has 10 industry sponsors and four faculty sponsors. Their organization sponsors include: Medtronic, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the Colorado Space Grant Consortium, Line Vision, Microchip Technologies, SparkFun, Fieldline, LUUM, Quality Life Plus and Augustus Aerospace.

Projects you will see at the Expo 2024 include: 

Team The Band is designing and building  a new product for SparkFun Electronics — a home air quality monitor. A small sensor box will sit in your home, and an app on your smartphone will give you access to the current air quality and a recorded history. Features in the user interface will be suitable for the casual user and the scientist inside all of us.

Team Formula 10 is designing and building an automatic room air purifier working off of a 48-volt microgrid. This system will monitor the indoor air quality, such as particle count, temperature, humidity and CO2 level. When it exceeds a threshold, the purifier activates a fan with a filter and UV purification lights. Since it is powered by a microgrid, the efficiency of the power delivery system is monitored and new power conversion technologies are demonstrated. 

Team JALATT is working with JPL to design and build a self-aligning connector system for autonomous, self-assembling CubeSats. A custom test bed will help  evaluate the contact resistance, leakage and signal bandwidth for power and data flow between CubeSats. This test bed will initially be demonstrated with a prototype connector design, which JPL will use to test future connector technologies. 

In collaboration with the Colorado Space Grant Consortium, Team Oval is designing a prototype Luna Sat sensor network. This is a collection of small, solar-powered circuit boards that will self-assemble into a wireless network of sensor nodes. This initial version will be used on Earth and distributed as a kit to 9-12th grade students around the world as part of the Great Lunar Expedition for Everyone (GLEE) project . This will give students a chance to explore remote data acquisition experiments.

Through coursework and a capstone project (M.S. students only) you’ll gain expertise that is needed in the private and public sector in the fast-growing fields of geospatial data science and CyberGIS, including techniques and tools for geospatial data processing, analysis, and visualization leveraging high-performance and data-intensive.

All courses in the CyberGIS and Geospatial Data Science certificate and M.S. program are 100% online so you may complete the courses from wherever you are! A majority of the courses are scheduled as 8-week courses, to provide students with a focused experience, flexibility in scheduling, and an ability to complete the program quickly. Courses are offered during both the first and second eight week’s of the Fall and Spring term as well as over the Summer. The second 8-week courses typically build on the topics covered over the first 8-week. With the way the courses are structured you could potentially finish the online Masters program in a year, if you choose to but you have the flexibility to move at a slower pase as well. Most of the courses are scheduled as asynchronous sessions online so you have the flexibility to work around your schedule. 

Even though the content is delivered asynchronously some instructors schedule synchronous components (e.g. labs, one-on-one) to meet with students one-on-one or in groups so that students have the opportunity to interact with their peers in the courses as well as with Illinois faculty. Students that may need to miss some synchronous sessions may work with the respective faculty member to review a recording or make other accommodations. Each class has weekly expectations and deadlines, with flexibility to allow you to complete work around your professional and personal obligations. You’ll interact with other students on a regular basis and feel like you’re part of a program with your peers (as opposed to complete self-paced learning).

Additional Information

Students pursuing the master’s degree will complete 32 total credit hours of coursework which will include courses from the list above and may also include other adviser-approved electives. The program requirements will conclude with the program capstone course (GGIS 598 Graduate Capstone Project). If courses are taken for the certificate sequence, they may also be applied to the Master’s degree requirements. Students should consult with a program adviser to discuss a program plan of study for the master’s program. 

Master's Program Capstone Research Project

The Capstone Research Project (GGIS 598–4 or 8 credit hours) is this program’s version of a master’s thesis. During this course, students will design and create their “capstone research project” which will utilize all of the skills, knowledge, and expertise gained though taking courses in the CyberGIS and Geospatial Data Science Program. This will allow students to apply those skills towards their own personal interests in an advanced geospatial problem or for developing a GIS-based application with guidance from a faculty member. When complete, the capstone project will be a professional piece that students can add to their portfolio, and could also be presented as a research paper, a webinar series, a dynamic presentation, a GIS-based application, etc. This will help students establish and demonstrate their additional expertise in the field. 

Certificate Curriculum

Students completing the CyberGIS and Geospatial Data Science Online Graduate Certificate Program must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours offered online by the Department of Geography and Geographic Information Sciences. This will be typically three courses. Once admitted to the certificate program, students should consult a program adviser regarding course selection and sequencing based upon their particular area of interest, skills and desired professional goals.

Master's Degree and Certificate Prerequisites

  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree (in a physical science discipline) from an accredited college in the United States or an approved international institution of higher education.
  • GPA of 3.0/4.0 or higher for the last 60 semester hours of their Bachelor of Science program.

Utah students aim to tow planes to the gate with a battery-powered, fuel-saving vehicle

Uvu seniors unveiled a ‘tug’ that could help planes get to the gate without burning precious fuel..

Provo • Their four-wheeled contraption had worked perfectly before reporters showed up, Utah Valley University students promised, as they tinkered with it at the Provo Airport.

The creation, a welded frame encased in two wooden compartments roughly the size of coffee tables and powered by two electric engines, was supposed to tow the Diamond DA40 XLT — a single-engine prop plane weighing around 2,500 pounds — hitched to it.

It worked for a minute during its public debut Friday, before a broken sprocket — the metal wheel over which engine chains run — immobilized the machine for the rest of the day. But it would likely be an easy fix, UVU professor and project mentor Brett Stone said, and what is engineering if not a series of problems to solve?

Someone else’s problem, the students chimed in — this is likely as far as they’ll take this project before handing it off to the next capstone class — but a solvable one. And if it works, this student-led invention could revolutionize the airport taxiing process.

This model was just the prototype, a culmination of a school year’s worth of work from UVU engineering and computer science seniors. When it works — which it had just this morning, students repeated — it will be able to tow airplanes to and from their gates, controlled remotely by airport ground crews, pilots and its own autonomous driving abilities.

The traditional taxiing process, Stone said, is noisy, dangerous and wasteful. It requires planes to burn precious fuel and asks tarmac employees to come dangerously close to the spinning blades of aircraft engines.

“Jet engines are meant to be at 30,000 feet,” Stone said. “They’re not meant to push things around on the ground. And so, the way engineers think, I guess, I was like, ‘There’s got to be a better way.’”

The goal is to build a “tug,” as the contraption is called, robust enough to taxi commercial jets — and bring it to market.

Aircraft tugs aren’t new — but fully electric, remote-controlled ones with the capacity to tow a commercial jet could be the industry’s next frontier. There’s a patent application pending for this specific model, Stone said, and future senior capstone classes will help scale it for commercial use. A commercial product could be ready in the next two years, Stone said.

“It’d be really cool to see it progress, to see it reach the full-size Boeing airline capacity,” said UVU graduating senior Kolby Hargett. “I think another year from now, [future students] can get started scaling it into something larger, now that the idea’s here and a lot of the ground work’s done.”

This was a first-of-its-kind collaboration between graduating seniors in UVU’s engineering and computer science departments. Engineers, like Ammon Traden, worked on the design and the mechanics. Computer scientists, like Cache Fulton and Riley Pinkham, figured out the software. Their combined skillset was what it took to turn Stone’s vision into a real, operable product.

“We were blessed that Kolby knows so much about electricity,” Traden said. “He helped us so much with this.”

It’s also the most ambitious capstone project UVU engineering students have undertaken, said professor and mentor Matt Jensen — and the most practical. Students will enter the job market with real-world experience and a demonstrable, physical product they can say they built from the ground up.

“While it’s not perfect, and obviously it did have its challenges today, I think just recognizing ... that they’re about to graduate and go into the industry, I feel very confident that they’ll be good engineers.”

And one day in the near future, the students imagine, they might get to sit on a plane being towed by something they helped create.

“Next, we’re going to come for the plane,” Fulton said.
