Everyday examples of IT

The list below outlines a few examples of IT that you could encounter in a business environment or at home. 

Cloud computing services. Modern organizations generate massive amounts of data and rely on IT services like the cloud to manage it. Examples include collaborative cloud applications like Google Drive and Dropbox. You might use public cloud services yourself to store and manage personal data, like pictures and videos. For example, iPhone users can use iCloud and Android users can use Google One.

Network security. A virtual private network or VPN is an excellent example of an IT service used both by individuals and businesses. Firewalls and anti-virus software are some additional examples of IT applications designed to protect computer systems and networks.

Remote device troubleshooting. It’s likely that at some point in your personal or professional life, you’ve received help from an IT support specialist. Remote troubleshooting is one of the most commonly used IT services today. Typically, IT support can work with users’ devices from anywhere via internet connection to resolve software or hardware issues. 

Key components of information technology

Due to the wide range of concepts and applications involved with IT, it can be difficult to define without specific context. In general, information technology is a broad term that encompasses elements like digital communication, network administration, software components, and physical devices. Many of these hardware and software systems aim to accomplish one of the following three processes: 

Data mining. Data mining is the process of sorting and analyzing large amounts of data. The goal is to uncover relationships and patterns that can be used to solve problems and identify meaningful trends. Accordingly, data mining is sometimes referred to as knowledge discovery in data or, KDD.

Data transmission. The term data transmission refers to the flow of information through a network. It’s also known as digital communication or data communication because it involves the transfer and reception of information. 

Database management. A database is an organized collection of data that is designed to simplify access, storage, and management. Databases are typically coordinated through a database management system (DBMS).

An information technology system or information system (IS) is a collection of interconnected software, hardware, people, and processes that manage information. The flow of data through an information system follows five steps: input, processing, storage, output, and feedback.

What is business information technology?

Business information technology or BIT is a subfield of IT that focuses on applying computing concepts and methodology to business practices. The goal is to use digital technologies to solve business problems and streamline company operations. BIT can vary from industry to industry, but common incentives include process automation and increased efficiency in business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) communications.

Information systems technology is an overarching category that encompasses both IT and IS disciplines. Information systems technology professionals focus on how IT and IS systems can work together effectively to solve problems and achieve business goals. They manage both the technology that supports information systems and the people and processes that operate that technology. 

What is an information technology degree?

IT career paths

Most IT professionals start out in entry-level IT jobs , as IT technicians or help desk technicians . These roles typically require the least amount of experience and can include on-the-job training. Entry-level IT jobs can help you prepare to pursue a specialization because they require you to build a working knowledge of IT basics such as troubleshooting and network maintenance. 

Mid-level IT roles tend to have a smaller scope of more specialized responsibilities. Examples of mid-level IT jobs include system administrators (also known as sysadmins) who design and coordinate computer systems and information security analysts , who help protect organizations from data breaches and other cyber threats. 

An advanced or senior-level IT role requires the most specialized knowledge and field experience. Some job titles that can be considered senior IT positions include leadership roles like IT managers and high-level engineering jobs like penetration testers. A penetration tester is a senior cybersecurity engineer who performs simulated cyber attacks on computer systems and networks to identify vulnerabilities.

The terms "information technology" and "IT" are widely used in business and the field of computing. People use the terms generically when referring to various kinds of computer-related work, which sometimes confuses their meaning.

What Is Information Technology?

A 1958 article in Harvard Business Review referred to information technology as consisting of three basic parts: computational data processing, decision support, and business software. This time period marked the beginning of IT as an officially defined area of business; in fact, this article probably coined the term.

Over the ensuing decades, many corporations created so-called "IT departments" to manage the computer technologies related to their business. Whatever these departments worked on became the de facto definition of Information Technology, one that has evolved over time. Today, IT departments have responsibilities in areas like computer tech support, business computer network and database administration, business software deployment, and information security.

Especially during the dot-com boom of the 1990s, Information Technology also became associated with aspects of computing beyond those owned by IT departments. This broader definition of IT includes areas like software development, computer systems architecture, and project management.

Information Technology Jobs and Careers

Job posting sites commonly use IT as a category in their databases. The category includes a wide range of jobs across architecture, engineering, and administration functions. People with jobs in these areas typically have college degrees in computer science and/or information systems. They may also possess related industry certifications. Short courses in IT basics can be also be found online and are especially useful for those who want to get some exposure to the field before committing to it as a career.

A career in Information Technology can involve working in or leading IT departments, product development teams, or research groups. Having success in this job field requires a combination of both technical and business skills.

Issues and Challenges in Information Technology

  • As computing systems and capabilities continue expanding worldwide, "data overload" has become an increasingly critical issue for many IT professionals. Efficiently processing huge amounts of data to produce useful business intelligence requires large amounts of processing power, sophisticated software, and human analytic skills.
  • Teamwork and communication skills have also become essential for most businesses to manage the complexity of IT systems. Many IT professionals are responsible for providing service to business users who are not trained in computer networking  or other information technologies but who are instead interested in simply using IT as a tool to get their work done efficiently.
  • System and network security issues are a primary concern for many business executives, as any security incident can potentially damage a company's reputation and cost large sums of money.

Computer Networking and Information Technology

Because networks play a central role in the operation of many companies, business computer networking topics tend to be closely associated with Information Technology. Networking trends that play a key role in IT include:

  • Network capacity and performance: The popularity of online video has greatly increased the demand for network bandwidth both on the Internet and on IT networks. New types of software applications that support richer graphics and deeper interaction with computers also tend to generate larger amounts of data and hence network traffic. Information technology teams must plan appropriately not just for their company's current needs but also this future growth.
  • Mobile and wireless usages: IT network administrators must now support a wide array of smartphones and tablets in addition to traditional PCs and workstations. IT environments tend to require high-performance wireless hotspots with roaming capability. In larger office buildings, deployments are carefully planned and tested to eliminate dead spots and signal interference.
  • Cloud services: Whereas IT shops in the past maintained their own server farms for hosting email and business databases, some have migrated to cloud computing environments where third-party hosting providers maintain the data. This change in computing model dramatically changes the patterns of traffic on a company network, but it also requires significant effort in training employees on this new breed of applications.

In business, network architects have the critical job of designing a company’s computer network, including physical components, operational procedures and communication protocols. The salary range for this career was less than $67,190 to more than $175,570 in May 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

IT professionals use specialized programs like network architecture and administration software to track protocols and ensure optimal functionality.

Information security

Information security is vital to businesses in all industries. Information security analysts are tasked with protecting company networks from cyberattacks and data breaches.

Security software helps analysts block malware and other types of cyberattacks. Other tools like network monitoring allow analysts to scan their systems for potential vulnerabilities and identify them before they can be exploited.

The salary range for information security analysts was less than $60,060 and more than $163,300 in May 2020, according to BLS.

Software vs. hardware in information technology

The tools used by information technology specialists are divided into two main categories: hardware and software. These two forms of technology are fundamentally different but are often used together to help businesses achieve their goals. Generally, companies need both hardware and software to establish and sustain functioning informational networks.  

Software describes any programmed set of instructions computers follow to carry out tasks. Software can refer to any program or application that's designed to help computers perform a specific function.

Different types of software have different uses in IT. Operating systems like Windows and iOS help computers perform more efficiently at every level, while applications like office suites and database management programs are designed for a specific task or purpose.

Most types of software belong to one of six major categories: 

  • Application software: Programs designed for specific tasks (web browsers, games, word processors, media players, video editing programs).

  • Firmware: Instructional software that's embedded directly into a device’s internal hardware. Peripheral hardware items like printers and scanners have their own unique firmware designed to make their operations more efficient.
  • Programming software: Software that is used to help programmers write code for new systems and applications. Examples include debuggers, compilers and programming language editors like Eclipse or Coda.
  • Driver software: Software that controls the functions of a specific piece of hardware. Computer components like graphics cards and network cards each have their own “driver” software that guides its operations.
  • Utility Software: This type is designed to help IT managers maintain computers, diagnose problems or optimize a specific function. Examples of utility software include antivirus programs, diagnostic scanners and clipboard managers.

Software can improve network function and help employees complete complex tasks faster. Many software systems require a certain amount of hardware to run, so it's critical for IT managers to understand the system requirements for programs they use. 

While software refers to the programs and applications installed on the computer, “hardware” describes the physical parts a computer or computer network needs to function.

IT professionals use two main categories of hardware: the internal parts of the computer and the external devices that provide input or output. Businesses need both types to optimize their network performance.    

The pieces of internal hardware in a computer (also called “components”) are the built-in, physical parts of the device, such as:

  • Motherboard 
  • CPU (central processing unit)
  • Network card
  • RAM (random access memory)
  • Power supply

External hardware devices in IT (also called “peripherals”) are appliances that connect externally to a computer and provide input, output or data storage. External hardware can take on many forms, such as:

National average salary : IT help and support technicians can earn a wide range of salaries, due to the variety of fields and employers in which IT help is required. Computer user support specialists may earn anywhere from $32,830 to $88,940, depending on how specialized their work is and in which sector they are employed.

Education requirements : Help desk technicians and IT support specialists should consider an associate degree in IT, though certain employers or sectors may require a more advanced or specialized degree.

Job outlook : IT help desk technicians are already in demand, so growth in demand for their services is expected to grow at an average of 9% each year, according to BLS.

IT management

Overview : Computer and information systems managers are responsible for directing the computer-related activities of a company. Some IT management roles focus on directing projects and day-to-day operations of IT teams. Others take on more technical projects and must manage sophisticated equipment, systems or other digital resources.

As a result, skills needed by IT management professionals depend on their area of specialization, their field and the specifics of their role. Some IT management positions require advanced technical training, while others seek a blend of basic IT talent with some business or even management and human resource skills.

National average salary : The salary range for computer and information systems managers was $90,430 to $208,000 in May 2020, according to BLS.

Education requirements : Education requirements for IT managers can vary widely depending on an individual's skills, experience, location and employer. Typically, these professionals need a bachelor’s degree in IT, but some positions may require a graduate degree or additional specializations or certifications.  

Job outlook : As the adoption of technology grows across industries and organizations alike, the need for individuals to manage IT should increase as well. BLS projects employment to grow 11% between 2020 and 2030, faster than the average for all occupations. 

Health IT specialist

Overview : The healthcare sector is rapidly advancing and integrating next-generation digital solutions, tools and information management systems, and it has a diverse and urgent need for a variety of IT professionals to handle these emerging challenges. Everything from managing security for sensitive medical records to directly aiding healthcare providers in their documentation, patient assessments and research into new operations and potential cures relies on help from IT professionals.

Becoming a health IT specialist requires a combination of technical training and potentially clinical experience, familiarity with healthcare systems or other medical education, depending on the role.

National average salary : According to BLS data from May 2020, specialists managing health records can earn up to (and sometimes more than) $105,690 per year, while more entry-level information technologists working in private offices can start at $29,130. Presentation technology refers to a wide range of applications that enable instructors to display information during a lecture. Students also use these applications when they make presentations as part of class assignments. Used to help organize presentations, show examples, and provide visual interest, these applications usually allow for some combination of text and graphics as well as embedded video. While Microsoft PowerPoint is the most commonly used, there are a range of applications that fall under this category. 

  • Displaying lecture outlines, visual examples (photos, graphs, diagrams, videos) and/or instructions for classroom activities
  • Displaying sample test questions or concept questions to check student understanding (possibly used with personal response systems)
  • Creating opportunities for students to organize content and present to peers as part of a lecture
  • Providing "skeletal" outlines that facilitate student notetaking
  • Providing a resource that guides students' review of lecture material (alone or in connection with audio/video recordings of lecture)

Tips for using slides effectively

While it is easy to create slides, it is also easy to overwhelm students with these programs. Common problems include showing far too many slides in a given time period, text-heavy slides that are often difficult to read, overuse of special effects, and slideshows that are designed to keep the instructor on track rather than supporting student learning.

In addition, slide-based lectures can put students in a very passive mode of trying to absorb and record large amounts of content without having the opportunities for active engagement and processing that are necessary for understanding and long-term retention of information. Finally, processing visuals (particularly text) at the same time as listening to a lecture can create cognitive overload that interferes with learning. 

General Recommendations for Formatting Slides

  • Use font size large enough to be visible, including captions and legends (look at your slides from the back of your actual classroom to check)
  • Use legible color combinations (keep in mind when refering to different color items that some students are color blind)
  • Use graphs rather than word-heavy charts when possible
  • Display only essential information and limit the number of words/bullets per slide
  • Use slides for outlines and examples rather than trying to capture every point you make
  • Display only the information that will help students; find other ways to keep yourself on track for the presentation
  • Distribute the slides or another outline-style handout in advance to facilitate note taking
  • Avoid overly flashy transitions and special effects that can be distracting 
  • Have a backup plan should the technology fail

Recommendations from Research on Promoting Learning with PowerPoint

  • Make slides available to students in advance of the lecture. Students retain more of a lecture when they have access to the instructor’s slides. When they do not have such handouts, students often try to copy down both the words on the slides and the notes from what they hear.
  • Minimize the use of animation to introduce new points to a single slide. PowerPoint allows a presenter to reveal each bullet point on a slide separately. However, research indicates that such an approach leads to lower retention of information, possibly because there is less time to absorb all of the material on the slide.
  • Use an assertion-evidence approach to constructing slides, instead of using the default format of a title followed by bullet subpoints. With this approach, the title becomes a 1-2 line sentence that makes an assertion. The rest of the slide shows evidence to support that assertion (preferably using visuals or a combination of visuals and short explanatory text). This approach helps avoid oversimplification inherent in PowerPoint’s linear approach.
  • Segment your presentation and integrate active learning. This can range from simply pausing to allow the audience time to digest the material, to having students take a moment to write down what was confusing to them, answer “clicker” questions, discuss case studies, etc. CRLT’s website has a few   resources for incorporating active learning into lectures. For examples of active learning, visit this page . 
  • Provide names and definitions of key terms in advance of the lecture. Such “pre-training” allows students to better understand a complex description of a how a system works as a whole.
  • Weed out any extraneous information included in the presentation. Such extraneous information puts additional demands on working memory, and decreases the ability to process and retain information.
  • Signal to your audience which information is incidental (e.g., an anecdote relating to the topic) and which is essential. This can be helpful in minimizing the cognitive load of the presentation so that students are better able to process important information.
  • Make sure that on-screen images and text are well aligned and synchronized, and make explicit which text applies to which image. A mismatch between visuals and verbal explanations can cause interference rather than increasing understanding.

Tips for using Prezi (or other non-linear presentation technology) creatively

Suggestions on best uses and practices for using Prezi: 

  • build a resources and links (images, text, video) and build a variety of paths for connecting the material based on the audience and the place of the presentation in the curriculum; 
  • experiment with a non-linear approach to a presentation in which your path through the material is not predetermined but driven by the interests of the audience; 
  • use Prezi as an alternative to actually presenting, allowing audience members to work through the Prezi taking notes on important/useful points, and then engaing in a discussion in groups or with the whole class about the topic at hand; 
  • use Prezi for helping students organize material, either by having them take your Prezi and think about how they’d present it, or by asking them to go through the process of laying out important information and then organizing it into a Prezi (a much less rigidly linear process than using PowerPoint).

PowerPoint, Keynote and Google Slides offer similar linear presentation style defaults (i.e. one primarily works through the slides one-at-time from beginning to end). PowerPoint can work across PC and Mac platforms, while Keynote is Mac specific and also works with iPads. Google Slides is part of the Google Apps suite designed to promote collaboration. This is a very pared down version of a presentation tool that allows multiple people to collaborate on a single presentation and store files on the web so they are available anywhere. Files can be imported into PowerPoint and made more complex.

An alternative to these products is a non-linear presentation tool, Prezi. Prezi is a web-based tool with different logic from those described above. It is based on a non-linear "palette" onto which a presenter can paste up combinations of text, images, video. Nonlinearity allows for different paths through the same information and development of a presentation based on graphic overview and easy embedding of YouTube videos. However, non-linearity can be both a challenge and an opportunity depending on your topic, how you organize your ideas, and your teaching style. In addition, zoom functions can lead to sea sickness if not used well.
