Examples from customer support, management consulting, professional writing, legal analysis, and software and technology.

The interactive, conversational, analytical, and generative features of GenAI offer support for creativity, problem-solving, and processing and digestion of large bodies of information. Therefore, these features can act as cognitive resources for knowledge workers. Moreover, the capabilities of GenAI can mitigate various hindrances to effective performance that knowledge workers may encounter in their jobs, including time pressure, gaps in knowledge and skills, and negative feelings (such as boredom stemming from repetitive tasks or frustration arising from interactions with dissatisfied customers). Empirical research and field observations have already begun to reveal the value of GenAI capabilities and their potential for job crafting.

There is an expectation that implementing new and emerging Generative AI (GenAI) tools enhances the effectiveness and competitiveness of organizations. This belief is evidenced by current and planned investments in GenAI tools, especially by firms in knowledge-intensive industries such as finance, healthcare, and entertainment, among others. According to forecasts, enterprise spending on GenAI will increase by two-fold in 2024 and grow to $151.1 billion by 2027 .

Job Summary:

The Department of Dermatology seeks an experienced Clinical Research Coordinator II to join our team of world-renowned researchers and investigators committed to basic, clinical, and translational research designed to address dermatologic diseases and other skin-related research questions. This position will play a pivotal role in contributing to the conduct of state-of-the-art skin disease research to advance scientific knowledge and thus provide better care to patients. Responsibilities Include: 1. Protocol Development and Management: Collaborate on research protocols and ensure compliance. 2. Regulatory Compliance and Ethics Oversight: Ensure adherence to regulations and ethical standards. 3. Participant Recruitment and Consent Management: Strategize recruitment strategies and manage informed consent processes. 4. Data Oversight and Quality Control: Oversee data collection, verification, and maintain quality control. 5. Site Coordination and Monitoring: Coordinate site activities, conduct monitoring visits, and ensure safety. 6. Communication and Reporting: Serve as the main contact, communicate study progress, and generate reports.

Responsibilities:

  • 25% Schedules logistics, determines workflows, and secures resources for clinical research trials
  • 15% Recruits, screens, selects, determines eligibility and enrolls trial participants, collects more complex information, performs medical assessments, and answers varied questions under supervision of a medically licensed professional. Performs medical assessments after completion of required training/certification, such as collecting vital signs, obtaining weight, and performing phlebotomy

Qualifications:

Experience: - Experience with clinical research regulations, including OHRP, CTMS, GCP required. - 1-2 years working in a research or clinical trials environment required. - Experience in approaching patients to discuss clinical trials and their potential participation, and obtaining informed consent required. - Demonstrated experience in scheduling, coordinating, and conducting visits and study meetings preferred. Knowledge and Skills: -Reading and understanding of research principles and methodology and be able to apply that knowledge to a clinical trials environment. -Strong oral and written communication skills -Strong attention to detail. -Ability to interact well with patients and researchers independently. -Ability to use good initiative and judgement. -Ability to structure time to meet multiple deadlines.

Preferred Drivers License - Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards

Full Time: 100% This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Some Michigan Democrats want different path than Whitmer on economic development

Lansing — Michigan lawmakers are attempting to craft new strategies to spur job growth, but there are disagreements, even among some top Democrats, about how to balance incentives provided directly to businesses with investments in communities.

On Tuesday night, the Michigan Senate approved a set of 10 bills that, if enacted, would mark a new chapter in the state's efforts to use laws and tax dollars to lure companies. It's a chapter that's being primarily written by Democratic legislators who won control of both the state House and Senate for the first time in four decades in November 2022 .

Some of the bills seek to strengthen research operations and benefit companies bringing high-wage jobs. Others would reassign a portion of the money the state has used to provide financial perks to chase large developments. Instead, under the bills , the dollars would have to go to initiatives aimed at making places more attractive to companies by spending on services such as transit, child care, job training and revitalizing downtown areas.

Sen. Mallory McMorrow, D-Royal Oak, chairwoman of the Senate Economic and Community Development Committee, said Democrats want to encourage growth in the types of jobs that will bring people to Michigan.

"We are here to work with you, but we're going to do it differently," said McMorrow of collaborating with the state's business community.

McMorrow's legislation would divert 50% of the money that flows through the corporate income tax to the state's Strategic Outreach and Attraction Reserve (SOAR) Fund. Instead, the dollars — up to $250 million a year — would go to a new Michigan 360 program to make community investments.

The Senate approved the main Michigan 360 bill in a party-line vote of 20-15 on Tuesday night. But Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer told reporters on Thursday that she didn't agree with the idea before the Democrat-controlled Senate voted on the measure.

“That was something that we had not thoroughly discussed,” Whitmer said. “So I’m confident that as the bills move into the House, we’ll be able to have a little more thoughtful dialogue on that front.”

Whitmer's administration has used the SOAR Fund to attract major electric vehicle investments from General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. to Michigan in recent years, projects that cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars to give the automakers direct cash subsidies. Overall, the governor called the Senate's economic development votes "real progress."

GOP opposition

Some experts argue that Michigan is at or nearing a crossroads economically.

Census Bureau estimates for 2022 showed Michigan had the 49th slowest rate of population growth among the 50 states since 2000 — only beating West Virginia, which lost population. Michigan Future Inc., a nonpartisan think tank based in Ann Arbor, released a separate report earlier this year, finding Michigan had dropped from 16th nationally in personal income per capita in 1999 to 39th in 2022, having been passed by 23 states in that measurement .

Growing uncertainty over the state's long-term growth has spurred policy debates at the state Capitol over what can be done to attract new business investment — and people.

Many Republican lawmakers and some business groups are criticizing the new approach Democrats are advancing.

During a meeting with reporters on Wednesday, House Minority Leader Matt Hall, R-Richland Township, called for changes to the economic development bills.

Hall targeted the High-wage Incentive for Regional Employment in Michigan (HIRE) program , which the Senate also approved on Tuesday night. That initiative would allow companies to keep a portion of the state income tax revenue generated by new high-paying jobs they create.

Hall said he would like to see the proposed HIRE program, which is backed by Whitmer, be tailored more toward Michigan-based businesses.

He also called for tighter accountability measures to be applied to SOAR recipients, and he said the full Legislature should be able to vote on which businesses receive cash grants through the program.

The House GOP leader said he wasn’t interested in his caucus being asked to “rubber stamp another Gretchen Whitmer program that is not part of the coordinated economic growth plan.”

“They’re not coordinated economic growth plans,” said Hall of the governor’s economic development proposals over the last five years. “They’re poll-tested ideas strung together. That’s what they are. We’re proposing elements that would actually lead to a coordinated economic growth plan, and we welcome the negotiation.”

The Michigan Chamber of Commerce voiced opposition to the Michigan 360 program last year.

The chamber, in a memo to the Legislature in October, argued any diversion from the SOAR money going to business incentives would dilute the state's economic development tools and weaken its ability to compete for projects.

"We want those dollars to go as far as possible when we’re competing nationally for these businesses," Leah Robinson, director of legislative affairs for the chamber, said Thursday.

The chamber took no position on the HIRE program after receiving "mixed reviews" from members on the proposal, Robinson said.

Community investments

Working with Republicans in 2021, Whitmer launched the Strategic Outreach and Attraction Reserve Fund, or SOAR Fund, to provide financial incentives for large projects, including $666.1 million in subsidies for a $6.5 billion investment by Detroit-based GM.

The original SOAR legislation was a dramatic legislative response to Dearborn-based Ford announcing it would invest $11 billion and create 11,000 new manufacturing jobs in Kentucky and Tennessee in September 2021 .

In 2023, lawmakers set up a longer-term funding stream for SOAR by allocating up to $500 million in corporate income tax revenue to the fund each year. The earmark was a top priority for the Whitmer administration.

But the Senate approved bills Tuesday that would set aside 50% of the money that flows through the state's income tax to SOAR, up to $250 million annually. Under the bills , the 50% allocation would go to a new Michigan 360 program.

The Michigan 360 program could fund services such as regional transit development, building housing, demolishing blighted structures, improving greenways and parks, job training, child care and downtown business development.

McMorrow posted on social media Wednesday that the change would mean money would go "to investments in our people and communities — instead of relying so heavily on incentives for big companies."

Since 2021, a total of $3.7 billion has been allocated by lawmakers to SOAR, McMorrow said.

"We’ve seen other states find greater success in packaging traditional economic development tools with targeted investments in communities," McMorrow said in a statement last year . "It’s time for Michigan to build on our economic momentum and take a more holistic approach to attracting and retaining talent through investing in our state’s greatest assets: our people and the places we live.”

Targeting research

A five-bill package focused on research and development already passed the House overwhelmingly last year.

The main proposal in the package won the approval of the Senate in a vote of 22-13 on Tuesday.

The bills would allow large businesses to get income tax credits of up to $2 million for research and development expenses. Smaller businesses could also benefit.

Rep. Greg VanWoerkom, R-Norton Shores, said the goal "is to keep good-paying jobs in Michigan and bring in new, long-standing opportunities in the fields of the future."

"Not only will it strengthen our local economy today, it will also help create new jobs in our community for years to come," VanWoerkom said.

The bills would reduce state revenues by $100 million per tax year, according to the nonpartisan Senate Fiscal Agency .

In her State of the State address in January, Whitmer called for reworking the state's economic development incentives, including voicing support for the research and development tax credit.

"Together, we’re going to build the infrastructure for innovation so founders can start and build their companies here in Michigan," Whitmer said in the speech .

The Michigan Chamber of Commerce opposed the legislation's initial wording, but worked with sponsors to fashion a tax credit program that would reach a variety of different industries, Robinson said. Michigan is one of 12 states without a research and development tax credit, she noted.

"The Michigan Chamber is really excited to have legislation on the table that businesses are interested in and that we know can make an impact, not just for businesses already in the state, but those also looking to relocate," Robinson said.

HIRE initiative

Another set of bills that the Senate approved would revive the Good Jobs for Michigan program, which launched during former Gov. Rick Snyder's administration and functioned from 2017 through 2019. It allowed businesses to keep a portion of new employees’ income tax that would usually be withheld and surrendered to the state.

Whitmer called for the new HIRE program during her State of the State address.

"Michiganders are counting on Democrats and Republicans to come together to get this done and make sure Michigan has a full set of resources to compete for more jobs and investment," Whitmer spokesman Bobby Leddy said in a statement.

Under the new bills, the staff of the Michigan Economic Development Corp. would operate the HIRE program. To qualify, businesses would have to create at least 250 new jobs with wages equal to 150% or more of a regional median wage. Companies could qualify by creating fewer jobs, as few as 25, if the positions paid even higher or were created in small counties , according to the bills.

In 2022, the median wage in the Metro Detroit region was $23.26 an hour, which would amount to about $48,380 a year, according to data from the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget .

Under the bills , the total statewide tax capture committed each year can't exceed $125 million in annual lost revenue to the state.

McMorrow said the new program could benefit small, as well as large, businesses in Michigan.

Brian Calley, who served as Snyder's lieutenant governor and is now CEO of the Small Business Association of Michigan, credited lawmakers with attempting to make the proposed incentive programs available to smaller companies.

“While I would like to see that new job threshold lowered further, getting it to 25 was a big change,” Calley said.

The main HIRE bill passed the Senate in a party-line vote of 20-15.

Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt, R-Porter Township, said the economic development bills represented Democrats "picking winners and losers" and "putting big corporations over struggling families."

"These tax dollars should be going back into the pockets of the hardworking Michigan taxpayers who actually need economic relief," Nesbitt said.

AI is already changing research and product development at Philly-based NextFab

NextFab has been using this technology, which “learns” and accelerates with repeated use, to speed web research and design new products, processes, logos, legal contracts, and more.

Tech developers, tinkerers, device engineers, artists, and start-up founders are experimenting with ChatGPT and other generative artificial intelligence platforms — including at NextFab , a Philadelphia firm that offers digital hardware and software tools, know-how and venture funding to fee-paying users .

At its “makerspaces” on Washington Avenue in Point Breeze and North American Street on the west edge of Kensington, NextFab users, staff, and visitors have been applying this software, which “learns” and accelerates with repeated use to speed web research and design new products, processes, logos, legal contracts, and thought experiments.

Fans say AI platforms promise greater efficiency and opportunity, while challenging established work roles and ideas on the nature and use of intellectual property.

On the eve of a March 22 AI demo gathering at the American Street location, Evan Malone, the Cornell Ph.D. and media heir who started the business at the University City Science Center in 2009, convened four of his favorite Philly AI enthusiasts to explain how AI is already changing design and production.

They were Brad Flaugher , an MIT and Wharton grad turned software company founder who wrote the how-to book AI Harmony ; Josh Devon, cofounder of Philadelphia-based Flashpoint , which makes threat-intelligence software; and a pair of NextFab’s own staff — Drexel-trained senior engineer Matt Starfield , a past Electropunk and heavy-metal musician with Philly’s Mose Giganticus ; and IT chief Michael Grusell , who built systems for Citibank. Here’s some of what they told the Inquirer.

This interview has been condensed for brevity and clarity.

Are these ‘generative’ AI platforms just fancy search engines? How are you using this?

Devon: Every company now is an AI company or waiting to be. It’s just as in the 1990s everyone was asking, “Where are you on the web?”

I’ve been working with intellectual property developed by computational linguists at Stanford to apply AI to the venture-building process. We suck down pieces of the internet into the query, then apply ChatGPT questions, like we were a junior analyst team looking at the potential for tech disruption. We’ll feed it writings from Gandhi and Mother Teresa and have them debate things we prototype from economic and moral directions.

Or we’ll take a securities-trading idea and spin it up to look for market signals, then figure out what to try next.

One start-up I was helping, Redcoat.ai , just came out of stealth. It’s dealing with this increasing problem, an AI problem, that within three seconds of a YouTube video [getting posted online], you can now use AI to make a “chatbox” that can talk just like the person in the video.

So suddenly we have all these soundalike “CEOs” calling employees and telling them: “Send me $3,000 immediately!” Redcoat can tell you if the calls are real or automated.

Who can use these AI tools?

Starfield: Anyone. I’m an engineer, but I don’t have formal IT training.

Last year that AI stuff started piquing our interest. What lit a fire was Brad’s book, AI Harmony . It’s one big lesson on how to use these applications. Now I’m a passionate evangelist.

Before AI, I’d Google some keywords, read four or five linked articles, and find one that answers the question. Now I type the question into GPT, and it spits out the answer. It saves 40 minutes of research and gives me more keywords and touchpoint to ask the right question.

ChatGPT opened up the world to be able to use different LLMs (large language models). I usually have browsers open to [Anthropic’s] Claude 3 , Perplexity , Mistral , Google. I’ll ask them all the same question and see what they are giving us.

You’re still responsible for the validity of the answer — these can hallucinate , they can give you the wrong information, you have to verify.

What’s Translate Tribune ?

Flaugher: It’s my fully autonomous news aggregator. I’m stealing articles. It visits all these news sources — U.S., Turkey, Russia, Kenya, Israel, Iran, the People’s Daily in China, friends and foes — selects articles and translates them, and publishes a “newspaper” every day.

Here’s how it picks them for us: I told ChatGPT “You were a CIA analyst” and had it create a page of international news. Then I set up a finance page and told it, “You worked for Goldman Sachs, and you are translating for an American audience.”

It has every language. The Mistral AI platform from France is best at European languages. Claude3 is handling Asian languages, Farsi, Arabic, Swahili.

You focus on professional newsrooms, not random ‘ citizen journalists ’?

Flaugher: If you’re not paying for information, you’re getting propaganda. News is a premium product. You pay for news you trust.

But I’m not doing Translate Tribune for money; it’s proof of concept. The Wall Street Journal has a paywall, but it’s kind of irrelevant, I can get around it. I was paying $600 a year to the Wall Street Journal and New York Times. I canceled those. I do pay the [AI platforms] fees — about a dollar a day.

How can news organizations stay in business if you’re giving their product away?

Flaugher: I’m getting people to donate. Individuals starting podcasts find that if you get a loyal enough following, they’ll support you.

So the future of the news business looks a lot like Tucker Carlson. People will pay him to keep him interviewing people. Just like I keep subscribing to The Inquirer and the Economist. Donations are keeping news organizations around.

Devon: This all still has to shake out. OpenAI is being sued by the New York Times . I think it will be hard for the Times to say models can’t be trained on their data.

That’s how the internet works. Everyone is scraping everyone’s work. Would they pass a law that made that illegal? Google is paying Reddit to scrape their data. Maybe the Times will get Microsoft and Amazon and Google to pay them, or tie a product to AI.

Grusell: Clearly the [news organizations] want to encourage large tech corporations to subscribe. There will eventually be legislation. I wouldn’t hold my breath; the question of paying for source material has to percolate through the legal system for some time.

Do you worry about destroying people’s jobs?

Devon: You’ll always need humans in the loop to do this stuff. You might first need fewer. It’s cheaper than ever to start a company. Brad started one for like $20 the other weekend.

But then tech will need more jobs because it creates more needs and problems to solve. AI can help democratize people’s ability to solve problems they are passionate about and make money doing so.

We call [AI applications] “prompt engineering,” writing prompts with emotive, clear, precise language that gets the results you want. You don’t need to understand the math.

Malone: So we’re trying to elicit interest in AI by our members before they are displaced by it.

We have members who are freelancers. They make physical products and do graphic design. We need to embrace this and level up so they are not replaced by AI-generated images.

Generative AI lowers the barrier on who can use these tools. So less technical people can do more with technology.

Financial Sector and Fiscal Policy Reforms Will Help Bangladesh Sustain Strong Growth Despite Strong Growth, South Asia Remains Vulnerable to Shocks

Dhaka, April 2, 2024 — Bangladesh's economy made a strong turnaround from the COVID-19 pandemic, but the post-pandemic recovery continues to be disrupted by high inflation, a persistent balance of payments deficit, financial sector vulnerabilities, and global economic uncertainty, says the World Bank in its twice-yearly-update.

Released today, the latest Bangladesh Development Update says that urgent monetary reform and a single exchange rate regime will be critical to improve foreign exchange reserves and ease inflation. Greater exchange rate flexibility would help restore balance between demand and supply in the foreign exchange market. Structural reforms will be key to diversify the economy and build resilience over the medium and long term, including measures to raise government revenues to support investments in infrastructure and human capital.

Persistent inflation eroded consumer purchasing power, while investment was dampened by tight liquidity conditions, rising interest rates, import restrictions, and increased input costs stemming from upward revisions in administered energy prices.

Private sector credit growth slowed further in FY24, reflecting a broader slowdown in investment. The non-performing loan (NPL) ratio in the banking sector remains high and understates banking sector stress due to lax definitions and reporting standards, forbearance measures, and weak regulatory enforcement. The Balance of Payments deficit moderated over the first half of FY24 driven by a surplus in the current account.

“Bangladesh’s strong macro-economic fundamentals have helped the country overcome many past challenges,” said Abdoulaye Seck, World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan . “ Faster and bolder fiscal, financial sector, and monetary reforms can help Bangladesh to maintain macroeconomic stability and reaccelerate growth.”

The report’s companion piece, the latest South Asia Development Update - Jobs for Resilience, also released today, says South Asia is expected to remain the fastest-growing region in the world for the next two years, with growth projected to be 6.0% in 2024 and 6.1% in 2025. Growth in South Asia is expected to be driven mainly by robust growth in India and Bangladesh, and recoveries in Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

But this strong outlook is deceptive, says the report. For most countries, growth is still below pre-pandemic levels and is reliant on public spending. Persistent structural challenges threaten to undermine sustained growth, hindering the region’s ability to create jobs and respond to climate shocks. Private investment growth has slowed sharply in all South Asian countries and the region is not creating enough jobs to keep pace with its rapidly increasing working-age population.

“South Asia’s growth prospects remain bright in the short run, but fragile fiscal positions and increasing climate shocks are dark clouds on the horizon,” said Martin Raiser, World Bank Vice President for South Asia . “ To make growth more resilient, countries need to adopt policies to boost private investment and strengthen employment growth.”

South Asia’s working-age population growth has exceeded that in other developing country regions. The share of the employed working-age population has been declining since 2000 and is low. In 2023, the employment ratio for South Asia was 59%, compared to 70% in other emerging market and developing economy regions. It is the only region where the share of working-age men who are employed fell over the past two decades, and the region with the lowest share of working-age women who are employed.

“South Asia is failing right now to fully capitalize on its demographic dividend. This is a missed opportunity,” said Franziska Ohnsorge, World Bank Chief Economist for South Asia . “If the region employed as large a share of the working-age population as other emerging markets and developing economies, its output could be 16 % higher.”
