Introduction

Pakistan Studies was introduced as a compulsory subject at the secondary and higher secondary level in the beginning of 1980. The main purpose of the subject was to promote national integration, unity, solidarity and harmony among the new generation. The subject ‘Pakistan Studies’ is the name of a curriculum of academic research and study that includes the culture, demographics, geography, history and politics of Pakistan.  Pakistan Studies is a multi-disciplinary subject encompasses social sciences, culture, economic, geography, and politics. It aims at enhancing students' knowledge about history, culture, and geography of  Pakistan  and to inculcate patriotism in the hearts of students so that they may become good citizens. This multidimensional course framework seeks to encompass wide range of issues pertaining to nation-building and state-structure in Pakistan, and provides awareness about the remedial measures for overcoming impediments inherent in our cultural and political fabrics. To achieve these goals the Department of Pakistan Studies has developed and offered different level courses of Pakistan Studies ranging from Matric, FA and BA.

Vision: To create awareness among the students about the “Vision of Pakistan”, as given by our leaders during the freedom movement and after the emergence of Pakistan, the rationale of Pakistan’s creation is highlighted. This approach will, hopefully, bring an element of objectivity in explaining the creation of Pakistan. It will also educate the students about the nature of the state of Pakistan as envisioned by its founding fathers. This approach is also useful in educating the students about the taxonomy of the state and in motivating them to develop a sense of patriotism as well as an urge for creative reconstruction.

Mission: The curriculum of Pakistan Studies has been developed with a mission to inculcate among the students a better understanding of Pakistan and its influence on the evolution and progress of the society, so that they may acquire proper perspective of thoughts and actions taken in the past. This approach will furnish the upcoming generation with knowledge and skill to promote a sense of patriotism and to develop universal human values in the society.

To provide comprehensive knowledge about culture, economy, foreign policy, geography, history, ideology, politics, and society;

To impart scientific approach of understanding different aspects of Pakistan so that the students/scholars may suggest solution to the problems of Pakistan;

To cultivate the spirit of national integration among citizens and a rational approach to comprehend the global challenges with available local realities and work scholarly on solutions across culturally diverse population.

Programmes Offered : In view of objectives, the course framework is sought to be issue oriented. It seeks to cover Pakistan’s cultural heritage since ancient times, Muslim political thought over the centuries, constitutional development since 1947, political systems and its functioning, public policies and reforms, agro-industrial projects, urbanization, social change and transformation, political development and modernization, as well as the democratization process through resource development and management, good governance and mass socialization, mobilization and participation. Currently the department is offering  the following five academic programs;

a great visionary and scholar of his time was born on 17 th October, 1817 in Delhi. He hailed from a royal and distinguished family. He had enjoyed all the amenities and facilities available to him at home. Being a member of royal family, he was given the best education of the time. In results, he achieved good command over religious literature including religious philosophy, Arabic and Urdu literature as well. He studied Fiqh and Asuli-Fiqh, Quran, Urdu and Arabic literature from the best scholars. Sir Syed exerted all the pleasure in his adolescents. But the death of his father Syed Muhammed Khan in 1838 with whom he was deeply loved and affectionately associated changed the entire course of his life. He left his comfy life and started living more responsible life. Demise of his father was also considered as one of the turning points of his life where he got influenced al lot. As personality, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was universally accepted as a social reformer, thinker, philosopher, educationist, great visionary and so on. He wrote many books like

Contemporary Education Dialogue

Arshad Alam

Syed Ahmed Khan is understood as the harbinger of modern education amongst Muslims of South Asia. There is a general scholarly consensus that it was through his educational efforts that English medium education came to Muslims who were otherwise aligned with traditional religious education. The commentary argues that this consensus needs revision and that Muslims were already accessing modern education through the English medium even before Syed Ahmed started his college at Aligarh. Moreover, the commentary also problema-tizes the notion of Muslim community within Syed Ahmed's thought. Through his writings and speeches, it is pointed out that for Syed Ahmed, the notion of Muslim community was confined to upper caste Muslims called the Ashrafs. Also, Syed Ahmed's views were extremely regressive when it came to women's education. Despite Aligarh being a modern university which is accessible to all castes and gender, Syed Ahmed's legacy has not been critically analysed. The commentary is a small start in this direction

INTEKHAB UR RAHMAN

After they spearheaded the First War of Independence (1857), the condition of the Muslims of the Indian Subcontinent was pathetic and abject. The Muslims were subjected to a concerted campaign of persecution by the British, who identified them as the only potential threat to their new Indian Empire. The decimation of the Muslim population and the destruction of their political institutions and power were accompanied by a spiritual and intellectual crisis unprecedented in the history of Islam in South Asia until the emergence of Syed Ahmad Khan. At that critical juncture he came forward as a savior of the Muslim community and a defender of the integrity of indigenous Indian intellectual life. He adopted a cautious, pragmatic and long-term approach; abandoning the romantic illusions and unfounded sense of superiority of the pre-'Mutiny' days, he acknowledged the material weakness of the native civilization compared to the colonial authorities, thus he advised the Muslims to be loyal to the British pro tem and to devote themselves and gain modern education for the socioeconomic upliftment of the community. This paper highlights the contributions of Syed Ahmad Khan and his pragmatic approach towards the problems and wellbeing of Muslims for their future, which changed the fate of the Indian Subcontinent.

Sustainable Computing: A Systems View

Meeting Time: 09:45 AM‑11:00 AM  Instructor: Abhishek Chandra Course Description: In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the pervasiveness, scale, and distribution of computing infrastructure: ranging from cloud, HPC systems, and data centers to edge computing and pervasive computing in the form of micro-data centers, mobile phones, sensors, and IoT devices embedded in the environment around us. The growing amount of computing, storage, and networking demand leads to increased energy usage, carbon emissions, and natural resource consumption. To reduce their environmental impact, there is a growing need to make computing systems sustainable. In this course, we will examine sustainable computing from a systems perspective. We will examine a number of questions:   • How can we design and build sustainable computing systems?   • How can we manage resources efficiently?   • What system software and algorithms can reduce computational needs?    Topics of interest would include:   • Sustainable system design and architectures   • Sustainability-aware systems software and management   • Sustainability in large-scale distributed computing (clouds, data centers, HPC)   • Sustainability in dispersed computing (edge, mobile computing, sensors/IoT)

Registration Prerequisites: This course is targeted towards students with a strong interest in computer systems (Operating Systems, Distributed Systems, Networking, Databases, etc.). Background in Operating Systems (Equivalent of CSCI 5103) and basic understanding of Computer Networking (Equivalent of CSCI 4211) is required.
