Essay on Shopping with My Mother:

Shopping with my mother is always an interesting and exciting experience. As a child, I used to accompany her every time she would go out to buy groceries or clothes. It was our special bonding time, where we would talk about anything and everything while browsing through the aisles of the supermarket or trying on different outfits at the mall.

One of my favorite parts was watching my mother haggle with the shopkeepers, trying to get the best deals and bargains. It was like a game for her, and I loved seeing her win.

But as I grew older, shopping with my mother took on a different meaning. It became less about buying things and more about spending quality time together. We would still talk and laugh, but now it was about deeper conversations and understanding each other’s perspectives.

My mother would also give me little shopping tips and tricks, teaching me how to be a smart and responsible shopper. She taught me the importance of budgeting and only buying what we really needed.

Even now, as an adult, I still love going shopping with my mother. It may not be as frequent as before, but it’s still a cherished tradition that I hope to continue for many years to come. It’s not just about the material things we buy, but the memories and moments we create together while shopping. And that is something truly priceless.

So, no matter how old I get, I will always look forward to going shopping with my mother. So, these were some interesting experiences that I have shared with my mother while we went shopping. But, going shopping with your mother is not just about spending quality time together or buying things, it also teaches us many life lessons.

From my mother’s bargaining skills, I learned the importance of being confident and standing up for yourself. She showed me that a little persistence can go a long way in getting what you want. And from her budgeting tips, I learned to be responsible and wise with my money.

But most importantly, shopping with my mother taught me the value of family and the importance of cherishing every moment spent together. As we get caught up in our busy lives, it’s easy to overlook these simple yet precious moments. But when we go shopping together, all distractions and worries fade away, and we are just two individuals enjoying each other’s company.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s rare to have such moments of quality time with loved ones. So, I’m grateful for every shopping trip I’ve had with my mother and look forward to making more beautiful memories in the future.

It may seem like a mundane activity to some, but for me, shopping with my mother will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s not just about the things we buy, but the love and connection we share while doing so. And that is something I will always cherish.

Essay about Shopping Habits:

Shopping is a common activity that almost everyone engages in. Some people shop as a form of leisure, while others do it out of necessity. Regardless of the reason, shopping has become deeply ingrained in our daily lives.

In today’s fast-paced world, consumers are constantly bombarded with advertisements and new products to purchase. This has led to an increase in impulsive buying and an overabundance of material possessions. As a result, many people have developed a habit of mindless shopping, often buying things they don’t need or can’t afford.

This type of shopping habit can have negative consequences not only on an individual’s financial well-being but also on the environment. The constant production and consumption of goods contribute to pollution and waste, which in turn harms our planet.

To break this habit, it is important to become more mindful of our shopping behavior. This can include creating a budget and sticking to it, making a list before going shopping, and questioning whether we really need an item before purchasing it. It’s also important to consider the ethical and environmental impact of our purchases.

By being more aware of our shopping habits and making conscious choices, we can not only save money but also contribute to a more sustainable future. Additionally, by reducing mindless consumption, we can learn to appreciate the things we have and find happiness in experiences rather than material possessions.

Shopping should be a purposeful and intentional activity, not just another mindless task on our to-do list. So the next time you go shopping, remember to shop mindfully and make choices that benefit both yourself and the world around you. So let’s all start breaking our shopping habits and strive towards a more conscious and sustainable future. Let’s make every purchase count.

Finally, it is important to note that breaking a habit takes time and effort. It won’t happen overnight, but with persistence and determination, we can all develop healthier shopping habits.

So let’s continue to educate ourselves on the impact of our consumerism and make small changes in our daily lives that will lead to a larger positive impact on society and the environment. Shopping is inevitable, but how we choose to shop can make all the difference.

Narrative Essay on Whether You Enjoy Shopping

Essay about shopping.

Everybody has their own way of relaxing and escaping from gloomy and mundane everyday life. As for myself, whenever I feel blue, disappointed with anything or just bored, I go shopping.

Undoubtedly, every person has to buy things from time to time. In fact, for some people, it is only a part of a daily activity that needs to be done to supply their family with necessities. Such people would hardly write an essay on shopping and its influence on their life. At the same time, others get a lot of pleasure wandering around stores, very often without any purpose. And that’s what my shopping essay is about.

Although you can’t call me a shopaholic, I have to admit, that sometimes my desire to buy new shoes or an outfit makes me leave all my current plans behind and go to the nearest shop searching for something that would make me happier. It may sound corny, but for most girls, a clothing store feels like a sanctuary, where they are free to express themselves among fancy dresses and shoes. After all, I am one of them, and every time I have some money, energy and desire to bring something new into my life, I cannot but assume that the easiest way to do so would be by going shopping. Clearly, a store is a place where I can relax and forget about all the troubles I had to deal with during the day and just let my personality shine. Besides, shopping is a perfect way for me to avoid stress, as it distracts me and calms me down.

All things considered, I cannot but wonder:…

This novel concept leveraged the burgeoning power of the internet to offer consumers the ability to purchase goods without the need to physically visit a store. Over the years, the proliferation of e-commerce platforms and the advent of secure online payment methods have significantly fueled the growth of online shopping. Today, giants like Amazon and eBay, along with countless other e-commerce websites, dominate the digital marketplace, offering everything from books and electronics to groceries and clothing.

Benefits of Online Shopping

Convenience.

The paramount advantage of online shopping is convenience. Consumers can browse and purchase products at any time, from anywhere, without the constraints of store hours or geographical limitations. This 24/7 availability has made it possible for individuals to shop at their own pace and on their own terms.

Wide Range of Products

Online stores offer an unparalleled variety of products, surpassing the physical limits of conventional stores. Shoppers can access a global market, finding niche products that are not available locally. This diversity ensures that consumers can easily compare products, prices, and features, leading to more informed purchasing decisions.

Cost Savings

Online shopping can also lead to significant cost savings. E-commerce stores often offer lower prices than physical stores due to lower overhead costs. Additionally, the ability to compare prices across different platforms easily helps consumers find the best deals. Exclusive online discounts, coupons, and cashback offers further enhance the potential for savings.

Ease of Information

The digital marketplace provides consumers with extensive product information, reviews, and ratings, enabling them to research and evaluate products thoroughly before making a purchase. This level of transparency fosters consumer confidence and satisfaction.

Challenges of Online Shopping

Despite its many advantages, online shopping is not without its challenges.

Cybersecurity Concerns

One of the most pressing issues is cybersecurity. The risk of data breaches and identity theft is a significant concern for online shoppers, necessitating robust security measures to protect personal and financial information.

Lack of Physical Verification

The inability to physically inspect or try out products before purchase can lead to dissatisfaction. This is particularly relevant for categories like clothing and footwear, where fit and feel are important.

Dependence on Technology

Online shopping’s reliance on internet connectivity and digital payment systems can exclude those without access to such technologies, highlighting a digital divide.

Environmental Impact

The environmental footprint of online shopping, driven by packaging waste and carbon emissions from delivery logistics, is a growing concern. While efforts are being made to mitigate these impacts, sustainable practices are not yet widespread in the e-commerce industry.

The Future of Online Shopping

The future of online shopping promises further innovation and expansion. Advancements in technology, such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), are set to enhance the online shopping experience by allowing consumers to virtually try on clothes or visualize furniture in their homes before making a purchase. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning algorithms offers personalized shopping experiences, with recommendations tailored to individual preferences and browsing history.

Sustainability is also becoming a focal point, with more consumers demanding eco-friendly products and practices. E-commerce platforms are responding by adopting sustainable packaging, optimizing delivery routes to reduce carbon emissions, and showcasing environmentally responsible brands.

In conclusion, Online shopping has revolutionized the retail industry, offering convenience, variety, and cost-effectiveness. However, it also presents challenges that need to be addressed to ensure a secure, satisfying, and sustainable shopping experience. As technology advances and consumer expectations evolve, the digital marketplace will continue to adapt, offering new opportunities and solutions. For students participating in an essay writing competition, understanding the complexities of online shopping is crucial. It is not just about the convenience of purchasing goods from the comfort of one’s home but also about recognizing the broader implications on society, the economy, and the environment. As we navigate the digital marketplace, it is essential to be informed, cautious, and conscious of the choices we make, shaping the future of online shopping in a way that benefits all stakeholders.

How has the activity of shopping changed from the late 19th century to modern times? Provide some cultural and historical context for your answer. Shopping is the essential activity of human civilization since the times of barter system.Historically, the activity was as simple as to sell the available product in an open environment, space or public place. In the nineteenth century, the activity was much organized with the development of avenues and modes to control the quality of the product with environmental factors. The cultural aspect of the activity determined the mode and manner of the activity of shopping in the late nineteenth century. Shopping bags were made from locally available products, and the manufacturing of products were also designed with the perspective to meet local demands and choices. However, crossing the era of the nineteenth century brought immense changes in the course and conduct of activities. The development of the retail markets with one stop solution made the activity easier for the consumer and challenging for the vendor. The expectations of the structure in terms of quality and quantity were raised immensely out of the successful models of the generation, such s Wallmart, Sainsbury, Metro. The activity of shopping when compared to the ancient times from the historical and cultural context makes the obvious point that the structure of the system was ruled over by a standard model with the development of retail stores and one shop solution. However, presently the factor of globalization has transformed the perspective of shopping once again with the progress of technology and retail structure. Online shopping stores and the virtual order delivery systems are the new approaches serving the demands of the activity of shopping according to the modern day requirement. On the whole, the complete shift of the model of shopping in different phases was determined to serve the objective of accessibility, affordibility and availability.

500+ words online shopping essay.

The trend of online shopping has increased in recent times with the increase of e-commerce and digital technology. With just a single click, you can shop for everything by sitting at your home as per your choice, convenience and budget. This essay on online shopping will help students learn about the pros and cons of online shopping. We have also compiled a list of CBSE Essays on different topics to help them improve their essay-writing skills. These essays will also help them improve their scores on the English exam.

What Does Online Shopping Mean?

Online shopping is the activity of buying products and services over the internet using a web browser or mobile app. It means buyers have to go online to reach a seller’s website and then select the product they want to purchase. The buyer can pay for the goods and services either online with a credit or debit card or upon delivery. Online shopping sites are also known by many other names such as e-shop, e-web-store, e-store, internet shop, web-store, web-shop, virtual store and online store. An online shop creates a physical analogy for buying products or services. Some of the famous online retailing corporations which facilitate the experience of online shopping are Amazon, eBay, Flipkart, Myntra, etc.

Online shopping is a growing area of the digital world and technology. Establishing a store on the Internet gives various options to consumers. With the growth of online shopping, most businesses have started selling their products online. Now, just having physical stores is not enough in this fast-paced world. Having online store interfaces for consumers has also become essential for running a business in the current scenario.

Benefits of Online Shopping

There are numerous advantages of online shopping. People feel more convenient while shopping online. They can shop from anywhere at their own convenient time through easy and safe payment methods. Online shopping has empowered consumers with various advantages such as convenience and time-saving, lower search costs, better product selection, lower prices, etc. One of the biggest benefits of online shopping is that you can buy the items you want with just a single click. Online stores are open 24 hours a day and are accessible from any location with an internet connection.

Online stores carry more variations and provide more varieties of a product as compared to traditional stores. This is because online stores don’t need to attractively display their items on shelves, and they can keep a larger amount of inventory on hand. They might also have small amounts of each item since they don’t need to display them and can order more from their supplier as needed.

Online shops tend to provide more information about items for sale than you would get in a physical store. Product descriptions most often include a description from the manufacturer, another description from the vendor, specific technical and size details, reviews from professional magazines and journals, and reviews from people who have bought the product. Having all this information available when you are considering a purchase makes you a more informed consumer without having to perform extra research by yourself.

Online stores are not burdened by the costs of running a physical store, such as the rent of the physical premises and wages of sales staff. The cost savings by online stores lead to lower pricing on the internet, passing on cost savings to shoppers. The internet encourages online vendors to compete with one another by lowering prices.

Disadvantages of Online Shopping

The benefits of shopping online also come with potential risks and dangers. When you shop online, you can’t touch or try out the product. You have to depend upon product pictures only. You can’t buy the product instantly. If you don’t get the product in hand immediately after payment, you have to wait for delivery, which can take days to weeks. There is no guarantee that you will get the product in its original shape; it might get damaged on the way. Sometimes, the product is very different from the pictures and description due to various reasons and also has poor quality. If, after receiving the package, expectations weren’t met, you need to go through a returns process which can be time-consuming. Apart from these, there is also a chance of security threats from online shopping. If the site is not secured, you have a risk of losing your card information.

Online shopping is one of the convenient ways of purchasing different products. However, there are some products which are better if they are purchased from physical stores. So, in the future, we can expect online stores to improve their technology, making way for a much easier and faster shopping experience.

1. Introduction

Shopping is an intriguing activity that customers undertake every day in retail shops, supermarkets, shopping malls, and other open markets. It should be noted that customer experience can negatively or positively impact the business since it determines whether the customer will return. Shopping mall experience, just like other businesses, takes into consideration the interaction between the customer and the organization. Customer experience is embedded in the time factor, in which the product interaction between the mall and the customer must take place over the duration of their relationship. It is imperative to note that the interaction between the mall and the customer is made up of three major parts namely, the customer journey, the environments that the customers experience during the experience, and the brand touchpoints that the customers interact with. In essence, the good customer shopping experience can be construed as the personal experience when all the touchpoints match the customer’s expectations. The shopping experience is greatly affected by a myriad of factors including promotions, shopper’s needs, interest, and expectations, touchpoint with the shopping ambiance including digital and physical environments, use of facilities, and customer service. Other factors include mall layout, efficiency in moving about, neatness, amenities, operating hours, payment methods, and ease of finding what they need.

Literature Review

According to Kwon et al. (2016), customer shopping experience encompasses the customer’s involvement at various levels, including sensorial, emotional, rational, and spiritual. It is contributed by not only the customers’ values but also the organization like mall providing the experience. Most notably, in today’s competitive climate, providing customers with the best experience involves more than just the innovative products and low prices because it includes all the points of contact the customer has with the business, products, and services. As the author argues, customer or shopping experience has become one of the vital strategies that retail businesses employ to remain competitive in the market. According to Kwon et al. (2016), customer shopping experience involves adding value for the customers purchasing products by taking into consideration the customer participation ad connection through controlling the aspects of the experience.

Physical Environment

Touchpoints such as facilities or the physical environments where the malls are located can contribute significantly to the shopping experience of the customers. Since most of the retail stores are located in shopping areas like malls, it is important for shopping malls to be mindful of their reputation because a bad reputation can negatively affect the retail shops. A study conducted by Melero et al. (2017) indicated that the customer’s opinion concerning a shopping mall could negatively or positively affect the opinion of the retail shops operating within the area. Malls with fancy facilities and fascinating physical environments tend to provide an excellent opportunity for the stores to have a deeper connection with their customers, which in turn offers a positive or good shopping mall experiences. As a result, the shopping centers will be more likely to benefit from their customers’ loyalty and retention.

Another factor that affects the shopping mall experience is the promotion that is incorporated in the malls. By actively engaging customers in promotion services, they tend to develop a positive customer shopping experience. According to Lee and Tsai (2013), incorporating promotions in the malls tends to develop a greater competitive advantage than other shopping centers. In their article, the author says that promotions help to capture new customers and retain the existing ones. This behavioral culture cultivates positive customer experience, which further increases the chances that the customers will make continued purchases in these particular malls and develop brand loyalty. Kukar-Kinney et al. (2012) states that brand loyalty plays a crucial role in making the customers advocates leading to a long-term relationship between the mall and the customers. The promotions also enhance word-of-mouth turning the customer into a touchpoint for the business. A study on how deals and promotions affect every part of shopping experience shows that two-thirds of the consumers that were surveyed purchased products that they originally did not intend to buy due to the influence of the promotions or discount. The study further shows that 80% of the consumers said that they were encouraged to make a first-time purchase with new businesses if the shop offered them a discount or had some promotions on their products. To this regard, malls should ensure that they use the new customer offers and promotions to attract new customers. Having promotions occasionally encourage the customers to buy goods that they did not intend to buy. Indeed, promotions affect the shopping mall experience positively.

Mall Layout

Mall layout plays a critical role in influencing customer shopping behavior since it coupled with efficiency in moving about while shopping. Mall layout design contributes significantly to the uniqueness of the store. The interior, as well as the exterior of the mall, relays different messages on the shopping center to the customers (Van, 2012). When it comes to designing shopping malls, space management is one of the top priorities. Both the non-selling and selling areas need to be spacious for easy movement of the customers when shopping. Since customers love their shopping process to be easy and satisfying, the shopping environment should be pleasant, wide, and easy to find their preferred mechanizes with sufficient products. Mohan, Sivakumaran, & Sharma (2013) argue that customer shopping experience will rise if there are good fixtures in the mall layout design. This includes the arrangement of the product categories, arrangements of the points of sales, and the fixtures. The author further points out that customer shopping experience tends to increase when there comfortable exists in the mall. This encompasses the packing as well as the delivery of goods, and more importantly, the movement of trolleys. Therefore, having narrow and small pathways reduces the customer shopping experience in that particular mall. Whereas, having spacious pathways facilitates easy movement, hence, elevates shopping mall experience of the customers.

Moreover, good arrangements of the products on the shelves makes it easier for the customers to find what they need faster than when the products are not arranged in an unorderly manner. This is further coupled with the mall layout, whereby having a spacious shopping environment, the workers tend to arrange the products at one place, and hence they can be found much easier. By customers being able to find what they need, they get encouraged to purchase more, have a good shopping time, and enjoy the moment in the mall. Consequently, this increases their shopping experiences.

Customer Service

Regarding customer service, Srivastava and Kaul (2014) argue that a larger percentage of the post-sales customer experiences is embedded in the customer engagement center. Incorporating technology in the contact center increases the ability of the customer service center to align with the changing needs of the customers. According to the Srivastava and Kaul (2014), the contact service centers are equipped with functionality ranging from the work optimization abilities, smart rooting to omnichannel support. The author further points out that some of the businesses offer additional information to the customers upon their request. Not being able to rise to the customers’ demands, the customer service centers risk weakening or breaking their relationships with the customers. It is, therefore, quite obvious that having a more responsive and effective customer service centers helps in creating long term customers and attract new ones. This, in turn, creates a positive shopping mall experiences of the customers. However, when the customer service centers are non-responsive, do not attend to the customers’ demand, and cannot rise to the changing needs of the customers, then the business develops negative shopping experiences in the customers, which can have a severe effect on the businesses.

Additionally, the mode of payment methods that the businesses use can have a big impact on the customers’ shopping experience. As Khan (2017) advises the business owners to choose the appropriate payment method that will work or favor a large number of customers. When they choose well, they more likely to attract more customers, but when they choose poorly, they will lose customers and risk losing the business. According to Khan (2017), having a variety of payment methods create a great experience from the beginning to the end of the shopping period. Therefore, the shopping malls need to employ different payment methods so that they can increase the customers’ shopping experience, which in turn increases their purchasing power leading to more profit for the business.

In conclusion, Shopping is an intriguing activity that customers undertake every day in retail shops, supermarkets, shopping malls, and other open markets. To this regard, malls should ensure that they use the new customer offers and promotions to attract new customers. Mall layout plays a critical role in influencing customer shopping behavior since it coupled with efficiency in moving about while shopping. Moreover, good arrangements of the products on the shelves makes it easier for the customers to find what they need faster than when the products are not arranged in an unorderly manner. By customers being able to find what they need, they get encouraged to purchase more, have a good shopping time, and enjoy the moment in the mall.

In the last centuries it has become more and more common to see stores, which has open all 24-hours of the day. Like every other new trend it has lots of aspects and you will have to beware of them all to decide if it is a good or a bad thing.              For the consumer it is no doubt an advantage. The store is always open anyway, so you can do your shopping at the time you find most suitable.              At some areas it is also an advantage to the society, because 24-hour openings results in a rising demand for labour. The fact that more workplaces will be created causes that less people will become transfer income and that again causes the expenses of the state to lower.              At other areas, such as common health, the 24-hour opening time is a drawback. American analysis has held it responsible for about 200,000 car accidents and 10,000 deaths a year. The reason told was that a person, who works at night is significantly more susceptible to sleeping disorders, especially if he or she has variable shifts, than normal working persons. The same analysis tells that Americans sleep 20% less than they did 100 years ago and that 55% of the population claim occasionally to suffer from "chronic" fatigueness. This is very likely a result of the disturbance in the body's inner clock. .              A different health aspect is that if a person is working at nights only, there will be a very great risk of him getting unwell from vitamin D deficiency. It is a result of lack of sunlight. The sun provides us with D vitamins, so if we become no sunlight we become no D vitamins. Off course the vitamin can be taken as vitamin supplement in the shape of pills.              Another point of view of interest is the worker's. As described above the work will be very hard, but on the other hand will there also be a reward to be expected.              I think 24-hour opening times are all right for some lines of business, for instance supermarkets and petrol stations, but not for others as for example photocopying and churches.

  • Solar Eclipse 2024

What the World Has Learned From Past Eclipses

C louds scudded over the small volcanic island of Principe, off the western coast of Africa, on the afternoon of May 29, 1919. Arthur Eddington, director of the Cambridge Observatory in the U.K., waited for the Sun to emerge. The remains of a morning thunderstorm could ruin everything.

The island was about to experience the rare and overwhelming sight of a total solar eclipse. For six minutes, the longest eclipse since 1416, the Moon would completely block the face of the Sun, pulling a curtain of darkness over a thin stripe of Earth. Eddington traveled into the eclipse path to try and prove one of the most consequential ideas of his age: Albert Einstein’s new theory of general relativity.

Eddington, a physicist, was one of the few people at the time who understood the theory, which Einstein proposed in 1915. But many other scientists were stymied by the bizarre idea that gravity is not a mutual attraction, but a warping of spacetime. Light itself would be subject to this warping, too. So an eclipse would be the best way to prove whether the theory was true, because with the Sun’s light blocked by the Moon, astronomers would be able to see whether the Sun’s gravity bent the light of distant stars behind it.

Two teams of astronomers boarded ships steaming from Liverpool, England, in March 1919 to watch the eclipse and take the measure of the stars. Eddington and his team went to Principe, and another team led by Frank Dyson of the Greenwich Observatory went to Sobral, Brazil.

Totality, the complete obscuration of the Sun, would be at 2:13 local time in Principe. Moments before the Moon slid in front of the Sun, the clouds finally began breaking up. For a moment, it was totally clear. Eddington and his group hastily captured images of a star cluster found near the Sun that day, called the Hyades, found in the constellation of Taurus. The astronomers were using the best astronomical technology of the time, photographic plates, which are large exposures taken on glass instead of film. Stars appeared on seven of the plates, and solar “prominences,” filaments of gas streaming from the Sun, appeared on others.

Eddington wanted to stay in Principe to measure the Hyades when there was no eclipse, but a ship workers’ strike made him leave early. Later, Eddington and Dyson both compared the glass plates taken during the eclipse to other glass plates captured of the Hyades in a different part of the sky, when there was no eclipse. On the images from Eddington’s and Dyson’s expeditions, the stars were not aligned. The 40-year-old Einstein was right.

“Lights All Askew In the Heavens,” the New York Times proclaimed when the scientific papers were published. The eclipse was the key to the discovery—as so many solar eclipses before and since have illuminated new findings about our universe.

Telescope used to observe a total solar eclipse, Sobral, Brazil, 1919.

To understand why Eddington and Dyson traveled such distances to watch the eclipse, we need to talk about gravity.

Since at least the days of Isaac Newton, who wrote in 1687, scientists thought gravity was a simple force of mutual attraction. Newton proposed that every object in the universe attracts every other object in the universe, and that the strength of this attraction is related to the size of the objects and the distances among them. This is mostly true, actually, but it’s a little more nuanced than that.

On much larger scales, like among black holes or galaxy clusters, Newtonian gravity falls short. It also can’t accurately account for the movement of large objects that are close together, such as how the orbit of Mercury is affected by its proximity the Sun.

Albert Einstein’s most consequential breakthrough solved these problems. General relativity holds that gravity is not really an invisible force of mutual attraction, but a distortion. Rather than some kind of mutual tug-of-war, large objects like the Sun and other stars respond relative to each other because the space they are in has been altered. Their mass is so great that they bend the fabric of space and time around themselves.

This was a weird concept, and many scientists thought Einstein’s ideas and equations were ridiculous. But others thought it sounded reasonable. Einstein and others knew that if the theory was correct, and the fabric of reality is bending around large objects, then light itself would have to follow that bend. The light of a star in the great distance, for instance, would seem to curve around a large object in front of it, nearer to us—like our Sun. But normally, it’s impossible to study stars behind the Sun to measure this effect. Enter an eclipse.

Einstein’s theory gives an equation for how much the Sun’s gravity would displace the images of background stars. Newton’s theory predicts only half that amount of displacement.

Eddington and Dyson measured the Hyades cluster because it contains many stars; the more stars to distort, the better the comparison. Both teams of scientists encountered strange political and natural obstacles in making the discovery, which are chronicled beautifully in the book No Shadow of a Doubt: The 1919 Eclipse That Confirmed Einstein's Theory of Relativity , by the physicist Daniel Kennefick. But the confirmation of Einstein’s ideas was worth it. Eddington said as much in a letter to his mother: “The one good plate that I measured gave a result agreeing with Einstein,” he wrote , “and I think I have got a little confirmation from a second plate.”

The Eddington-Dyson experiments were hardly the first time scientists used eclipses to make profound new discoveries. The idea dates to the beginnings of human civilization.

Careful records of lunar and solar eclipses are one of the greatest legacies of ancient Babylon. Astronomers—or astrologers, really, but the goal was the same—were able to predict both lunar and solar eclipses with impressive accuracy. They worked out what we now call the Saros Cycle, a repeating period of 18 years, 11 days, and 8 hours in which eclipses appear to repeat. One Saros cycle is equal to 223 synodic months, which is the time it takes the Moon to return to the same phase as seen from Earth. They also figured out, though may not have understood it completely, the geometry that enables eclipses to happen.

The path we trace around the Sun is called the ecliptic. Our planet’s axis is tilted with respect to the ecliptic plane, which is why we have seasons, and why the other celestial bodies seem to cross the same general path in our sky.

As the Moon goes around Earth, it, too, crosses the plane of the ecliptic twice in a year. The ascending node is where the Moon moves into the northern ecliptic. The descending node is where the Moon enters the southern ecliptic. When the Moon crosses a node, a total solar eclipse can happen. Ancient astronomers were aware of these points in the sky, and by the apex of Babylonian civilization, they were very good at predicting when eclipses would occur.

Two and a half millennia later, in 2016, astronomers used these same ancient records to measure the change in the rate at which Earth’s rotation is slowing—which is to say, the amount by which are days are lengthening, over thousands of years.

By the middle of the 19 th century, scientific discoveries came at a frenetic pace, and eclipses powered many of them. In October 1868, two astronomers, Pierre Jules César Janssen and Joseph Norman Lockyer, separately measured the colors of sunlight during a total eclipse. Each found evidence of an unknown element, indicating a new discovery: Helium, named for the Greek god of the Sun. In another eclipse in 1869, astronomers found convincing evidence of another new element, which they nicknamed coronium—before learning a few decades later that it was not a new element, but highly ionized iron, indicating that the Sun’s atmosphere is exceptionally, bizarrely hot. This oddity led to the prediction, in the 1950s, of a continual outflow that we now call the solar wind.

And during solar eclipses between 1878 and 1908, astronomers searched in vain for a proposed extra planet within the orbit of Mercury. Provisionally named Vulcan, this planet was thought to exist because Newtonian gravity could not fully describe Mercury’s strange orbit. The matter of the innermost planet’s path was settled, finally, in 1915, when Einstein used general relativity equations to explain it.

Many eclipse expeditions were intended to learn something new, or to prove an idea right—or wrong. But many of these discoveries have major practical effects on us. Understanding the Sun, and why its atmosphere gets so hot, can help us predict solar outbursts that could disrupt the power grid and communications satellites. Understanding gravity, at all scales, allows us to know and to navigate the cosmos.

GPS satellites, for instance, provide accurate measurements down to inches on Earth. Relativity equations account for the effects of the Earth’s gravity and the distances between the satellites and their receivers on the ground. Special relativity holds that the clocks on satellites, which experience weaker gravity, seem to run slower than clocks under the stronger force of gravity on Earth. From the point of view of the satellite, Earth clocks seem to run faster. We can use different satellites in different positions, and different ground stations, to accurately triangulate our positions on Earth down to inches. Without those calculations, GPS satellites would be far less precise.

This year, scientists fanned out across North America and in the skies above it will continue the legacy of eclipse science. Scientists from NASA and several universities and other research institutions will study Earth’s atmosphere; the Sun’s atmosphere; the Sun’s magnetic fields; and the Sun’s atmospheric outbursts, called coronal mass ejections.

When you look up at the Sun and Moon on the eclipse , the Moon’s day — or just observe its shadow darkening the ground beneath the clouds, which seems more likely — think about all the discoveries still yet waiting to happen, just behind the shadow of the Moon.

Opinion Leaders of Jordan, France and Egypt: Cease fire now in Gaza

Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein is king of Jordan. Emmanuel Macron is president of France. Abdel Fatah El-Sisi is president of Egypt.

The war in Gaza and the catastrophic humanitarian suffering it is causing must end now. Violence, terror and war cannot bring peace to the Middle East. The two-state solution will. It is the only credible path to guaranteeing peace and security for all, and ensuring that neither the Palestinians nor the Israelis ever have to relive the horrors that have befallen them since the Oct. 7 attack.

On March 25, the U.N. Security Council finally assumed its responsibility by demanding an immediate cease-fire in Gaza. This is a critical step that must be fully implemented without further delay.

In light of the intolerable human toll of the war, we, the leaders of Egypt, France and Jordan, call for the immediate and unconditional implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 2728. We underline the urgent need to bring about a permanent cease-fire in Gaza.

We emphasize the urgency of implementing the Security Council’s demand for the immediate release of all hostages and reaffirm our support for the negotiations brokered by Egypt, Qatar and the United States that address a cease-fire, as well as the hostages and detainees.

As we urge all parties to abide by all relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions, we warn against the dangerous consequences of an Israeli offensive on Rafah, where about 1.5 million Palestinian civilians have sought refuge. Such an offensive would only bring more death and suffering, heighten the risks and consequences of mass displacement of the people of Gaza and threaten regional escalation. We reiterate our equal respect for all lives. We condemn all violations and abuses of international humanitarian law, including all acts of violence, terrorism and indiscriminate attacks on civilians. Protecting civilians is a fundamental legal obligation for all parties and the cornerstone of international humanitarian law. Violating this obligation is absolutely prohibited.

Palestinians in Gaza are no longer facing only a risk of famine, but famine is already setting in. There is an urgent need for a massive increase in the provision and distribution of humanitarian assistance. This is a core demand of U.N. Security Council Resolutions 2720 and 2728, which emphasize the urgent need to expand aid supplies.

U.N. agencies, including the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, and humanitarian actors play a critical role in relief operations in Gaza. They must be protected and granted full access, including in the northern part of the Gaza Strip . We condemn the killing of humanitarian aid workers, most recently the attack against World Central Kitchen’s aid convoy .

Consistent with international law, Israel is under an obligation to ensure the flow of humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian population, a responsibility it has not fulfilled. We reiterate the Security Council’s demand to lift barriers to humanitarian assistance and for Israel to immediately facilitate humanitarian assistance through all crossing points, including in the North of the Gaza Strip and through a direct land corridor from Jordan, as well as by sea.

We, the leaders of Egypt, France and Jordan, are determined to continue stepping up our efforts to meet the humanitarian, medical and health needs of the civilian population of Gaza, in close coordination with the U.N. system and regional partners.

Lastly, we underline the urgency of restoring hope for peace and security for all in the region, primarily the Palestinian and Israeli people. We emphasize our determination to continue working together to avoid further regional spillover, and we call on all actors to refrain from any escalatory action. We urge an end to all unilateral measures, including settlement activity and land confiscation. We also urge Israel to prevent settler violence.

We emphasize the necessity of respecting the historical and legal status quo at Jerusalem’s Muslim and Christian holy sites, and the role of the Jordanian Waqf under the Hashemite custodianship.

We stress our determination to step up our joint efforts to effectively bring about the two-state solution. The establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state on the basis of the two-state solution, in accordance with international law and relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions, to live side by side in peace and security with Israel, is the only way to achieve true peace. The Security Council must play a role in decisively reopening this horizon for peace.

Take Me Out to the Gift Shop

For a lot of fans at the new Mets team store, game day is all about the shopping.

Shoppers dressed in Mets shirt and caps, most carrying multiple items, wait in line to pay for their purchases. Behind them are shelves of Mets caps.

By Alyson Krueger

On Friday morning, at 11:40 on the dot, hundreds of Mets fans flooded into the new team store at Citi Field in Queens. It was the opening day of baseball season, and they were the first ones into the new space, located in the Jackie Robinson Rotunda, the grand entryway to the ballpark.

Susan Wiedeman, 65, from Riverdale, N.J., who has attended Mets opening day with her husband for the last 40 years, was giddy with the experience. “We were just about the first ones in,” she said. “That was really cool.”

At 10,000 square feet, the store is twice the size of its previous iteration and filled with new technology, art and merchandise. There are vastly higher ceilings — “Last year I could adjust a lightbulb myself if I needed,” said James Benesh, the executive director of consumer products for the Mets — and a hanging sculpture by Michael Murphy, an artist in Brooklyn. The orange sculpture has the Mets logo intertwined in different cityscapes.

Part of the new store’s appeal is the sheer size of its inventory. “There is a lot of stuff in here,” said Janet Conlon, 75, who lives in Hillsborough, N.J., and is a school bus driver. She already has a closet full of Mets apparel at home, including more than 40 baseball hats. On opening day she wore three layers of Mets clothes — “I don’t like to be cold,” she said — and carried a branded bag and blanket. Still, the store offered bountiful new options.

“I’ve never seen a lot of this stuff before,” she said, laughing. “It’s amazing.”

In the space where 12 T-shirts used to be on display, there are now 52, according to Mr. Benesh. There are also more than 3,000 baseballs on the shelves at any given time. And the store has 40 staff members, double the size that was previously needed.

But the Mets organization has also raised its game in terms of what it is selling, especially to female fans.

“We’ve been getting feedback for a few years now that female fans don’t necessarily want a man’s shirt turned into pink,” Mr. Benesh said.

The team is restricted to selling items from approved M.L.B. vendors, and it has tapped some of the licensed newcomers to make capsule collections sold exclusively at Citi Field. For instance, rather than ceding the market for vintage sportswear to Etsy or vintage stores, the Mets are offering those items in-house. Refried Apparel, a company that makes new clothes from salvageable old items, has a line of jean jackets with vintage Mets logos and numbers that are sold at the team store.

“There is a lot of waste within our industry,” said Joanna Mingo, who is the consumer products coordinator for the Mets. “We have players who get traded, and then we can’t sell their jersey. Now we can send them to this cool company, and they make something that looks like you would find it on Etsy made by a girl in her college dorm.”

Other smaller brands offer bedazzled bomber jackets, corduroy hats, sequined crop tops and satin windbreakers. Personalized jerseys and limited-edition merchandise are also sold, but exclusively to V.I.P. ticket holders.

“This is stuff I can wear out on a walk or to brunch, not just to games,” said Hannah O’Neill, 26, a nurse from Rockville Centre, N.Y., who was shopping the collection on opening day. “Two years ago, you wouldn’t be able to get any of this stuff.” She had her eye on a hat covered in flowers.

Others were frankly mesmerized by the new RFID self-checkout system. Shoppers dump their purchases into a bucket, and a computer reads a RFID price tag attached to the item. The items pop up on a screen, and the buyers tap their cards to pay. “There is no scanning,” Mr. Benesh said. “It goes much faster.”

Still, there were a few growing pains. Some shoppers called over store associates to help them navigate the system.

“I’ve heard a lot of people in line complaining about it, but I’m young and love self-checkout,” said Dani Wasserman, 27, who is studying for a graduate degree in film in Boulder, Colo., and whose dad grew up on Long Island. They bought a Francisco Alvarez jersey.

It was only the first day of a long shopping season for Mets fans, as Mr. Benesh reminded the store staff in a meeting just before the gates opened. “If you hear any feedback, bring it to us,” he said. “We have 79 more games to go after today.”
