Doctoral Enrollment & Demographics

Use this page to explore the enrollment numbers and demographics for the research doctoral degree programs currently offered at Stanford. While the most common doctoral degree across the university is the PhD, the JSD in Law and the DMA in Musical Arts are also included here. The MD and JD are considered professional degrees and are not included. All data presented in this dashboard are sourced from the official university student census taken annually in late October. More detailed  definitions  of the terms and counts used here can be found below the dashboard. Additional demographic information about other Stanford populations can be found in the  IDEAL dashboard .

More information is available about  doctoral program admissions , as well as  doctoral degree conferrals, time-to-degree, and graduation rates . Note that local variation in policy and practice regarding admission, matriculation, and degree conferral may affect the departmental and school-level metrics below.

Methodology & Definitions

The enrollment counts presented here are derived from the student enrollment snapshot that is captured in late October every year, at the beginning of the fourth week of the autumn quarter. Only students who are active and enrolled as of the census date are counted. Students on an approved leave of absence are not included. This dashboard specifically uses the "School Headcount", which counts graduate students in their highest degree plan(s) in each school within the university. Students who are enrolled in more than one PhD program (a small number annually) will be counted in each program, so the "All Doctoral Programs" total may not match university totals published elsewhere (which are usually unduplicated counts).

Demographics

Race/ethnicity groupings.

The "Underrepresented Minority" category includes all US citizens and permanent residents who have self-identified as American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and/or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander. This category will include individuals with multiple affiliations if at least one of their affiliations is one of these groups. If a student is not a US citizen or permanent resident, and is known to be a citizen of another country, they are reported in the "International" category regardless of their race/ethnicity. The "Unknown" category includes US citizens and permanent residents who have unknown race/ethnicity as well as any student with unknown citizenship.

Currently, only data on binary sex are available.

Independence in random graph models

Abstract: (please note some characters may not display properly). Various random graphs models satisfy that each edge appears independently of all other edges but those in a bounded degree graph. Examples include Erdös–Renyi random graphs, random Cayley graphs, random Latin square graphs, and random entangled graphs. We begin the systematic study of random graphs under this weak independence hypothesis, focusing on the clique number. We prove that for $0[less than]p[less than]1$ fixed, for any such $N$-vertex random graph with edge probabilities each $p$, the clique number is asymptotically almost surely at least $(2-o(1))\log_{1/p} N$ and at most $O(\log N \log \log N)$. The lower bound is tight for the Erdös–Renyi random graph, and the upper bound is tight for random Cayley graphs in finite vector spaces over a fixed finite field. The upper bound solves various open problems in the area.

This is based on joint work with David Conlon, Huy Tuan Pham, and Liana Yepremyan.

Men's Basketball Welcomes Harden to Coaching Staff

Men's Basketball Welcomes Harden to Coaching Staff

STANFORD, Calif. – Kyle Smith, the Anne and Tony Joseph Director of Men's Basketball, has announced the addition of Jeremy Harden as the program's assistant coach and director of analytics.

"Jeremy was instrumental in the development of our bigs and our team's rebounding at Washington State," said Smith. "He is also going to amplify our scouting and recruiting with his cutting edge understanding of analytics and technology."

Harden joined the Washington State staff under Smith for the 2023-24 campaign, helping guide the Cougars to a 25-10 mark and second-place finish in the Pac-12 in 2023-24. The Cougars received a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the round of 32 with a victory over Drake in the opening round.

The Cougars had three players earn All-Pac-12 status in 2023-24, led by first-team selection Isaac Jones, who also earned ESPN National Player of the Week honors, and freshman All-American Myles Rice. Harden was instrumental in the recruitment and development of Jones.

Joining the Cardinal with more than a decade of coaching experience, Harden spent one season at Idaho and five seasons as the head coach at Wenatchee Valley College from 2017-22.

Harden led the Knights to an impressive 95-35 (.730) overall record and five consecutive winning seasons, including a Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) East Region title and an NWAC Final Four appearance in 2021-22. Harden was named East Region Coach of the Year while the team held the best regional record (15-1) and was the No. 1 scoring offense (93.1 PPG). He claimed his first NWAC Region title in 2021, as his team finished 11-2 in region play, while his 2019 team included WVS's first postseason appearance in four years. He coached consecutive NWAC scoring champions - Justin Martin (2018) and Malik Parsons (2019) - and would go on to coach a third in Isaac Jones (2022).

Prior to his stint at WVC, Harden was an assistant at Tohono O'odham Community College in 2016-17, and he spent three seasons as the director of player development at Boise State (2013-16) under head coach Leon Rice. Harden helped lead the Broncos to their first Mountain West Conference Championship in 2015 and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Harden made his college coaching debut in 2012, serving one season as an assistant at Eastern Oregon University. The Mountaineers tallied a 28-5 record and received their first No. 1 ranking in program history. EOU went on to win the Cascade Collegiate Conference championship and earn a berth in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national tournament.

A Tucson, Arizona native, Harden played for two seasons at Pima Community College. He was a two-year starter and led the Aztecs to their first National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region Championship, along with a No. 7 overall finish at the 2010 NJCAA National Championships.

A graduate from Eastern Oregon University with a master's degree in business administration in 2016, Harden received a bachelor's degree in communications at the University of Arizona in 2012.
